Is it normal for a seastar to sit with one leg outside of the water? Doesn't seem to matter where I move it, eventually it ends up at the top of the tank with one leg outside the water.

I'm interested in how much flow all the different members have, and what they keep in their tank.
I've just upgraded to 2 x Tunze 6025's.
5000L/h flow in a 130L tank keeping softies and LPS. Thats 38 x
What do you guys have?
-
hey guys,
i need to upgrade internal flow. Those resung wavers need to go pond side.
Could you give me your impressions on the makes available in SA and why you think they are good.
most seem to say that seio are good pumps, relativley affordable and do a job.
Tunze are very good quality but expensive.
and what sort of pumps should i me looking at for a 1.8 reef with some sps, but mainly lps?
i want to have a look at IMACSA and have a idea of what to look for before laying out money on things that are not suited.....rather like those resungs i have:)

Hello people. Ive had some terrible bad luck with my nano... its been going for over a year no problems. Do water changes weekly with NSW ect. Yesterday my fish started breathing heavely, but i thought nothing off it. This morning when i woke up they where all dead. Im like wtf ok? I test my water and ALL parameters are 0 and temp is at 26'C. Has this happend to anyone else before? Also i haven't added anything new in months so im completely confused as to wtf happened...

Hope someone can shed some light on this for me...... sorry that was unnecesary. I have 2 250w 14k BLV's running on a 2m tank about 50cm above the water. i have the the fittings and ballasts in the lighting hood for another 2 mhs. i raised the hood to its current height in preperation for the extra 2 250w mhs. my only concern is that i almost lost a few lps ( false brains, candy cane ) and one or two other colonies when i upgraded from 2 150 ventures to the 250w blvs. there seems to be enough light and everyone is quite happy so the extra lighting is more for asthetics than anything else. would putting 20k blvs (would look awesome) cause less stress ie light shock than say putting another 2 14k blvs.

Yeah i am finding marines incredibly rewarding, mind blowingly complicated and eye wateringly expensive
BUT THANK GOD FOR BATH WATER! makes me feel i can look after something and KNOW whats going on!:)

This is a really interesting article concerning lighting.
QUOTE:
"Although we generally think of corals as originating from brightly lighted natural reefs and naturally assume corals need lots of light, the truth is that most corals require relatively little in order to thrive. For example, the 'Fox' coral (
Nemezophyllia sp.) does quite well in low light. Thriving specimens have been noted in as little light as 35 µMol·m²·sec! On the other hand, an
Acropora specimen (commonly called the 'Purple Monster') displayed magnificent coloration in the highest light intensity I have ever measured in an aquarium - almost 900 µMol·m²·sec (later research reveal that this coral photo-saturates at 300-400 µMol·m²·sec. I was wasting a lot of light and money!). Most corals will grow quite well in light intensities of 200-300 µMol·m²·sec."

130L, need more flow in it. was thinking possibly 2 x Tunze 6025's?
Don't want anything too big as it will stand out a lot in a nano.
What else would you advise?

Wanna add some biorock to my tank (gonna add a lot more flow and some more LR to improve the filtration)
where can I get it in JHB and how much does it usually go for?
-
128L Nano tank, substrate is playsand (not very thick).
I've noticed there is diatoms and a bit of cyano developing on my substrate! :cheers2:
Now i'm not 100% sure on the cause but i'm thinking it might be too little flow in the tank (only have 2 little powerheads that put out 1000L/h.
I'm buying a Nanostream 6025 tomorrow! (unless someone else could recommend a better powerhead?)
I'm also wondering if I should use eggcrate to raise my LR off of the substrate? If I do this though can I remove the LR, then put the eggcrate straight on the substrate or would I have to remove the substrate before putting the eggcrate in the tank?
I was thinking of going barebottom but not sure how my little hermits or serpent starfish would manage without substrate?

Hey all!
So my prized anemone's became toast - courtesy of a vinegar injection - thought they were cute, but have already about 10 babies of them randomly in the tank - got a feeling this is going to be a problem in the long run?
Then I've got some brown growth in my tank [diatoms or something like that it's apparently called] with quite a lot of bubbles forming and when the circulation pump goes off, there's an extreme uprise in bubbles from the deadrock to the surface... is this normal?
My water also appears a bit cloudy - one can see foreign debris in the water, but I haven't been able to filter it out using my skimmer... any ideas?

Is there anyone close to Centurion that is willing to hold the coral that is left over for collection by the people mentioned in my thread? My tank has no return flow anymore and I have to drain it to get my twin spot coris out, but I have some coral still left. The tank needs to be largish as the coral I have includes two large corals (leather/colt), about 5 pieces of zoanthids, a ricordea, and a couple of other pieces of LR (about 15kg in total).
If anyone could help me today or tomorrow latest I'd really appreciate it.

Please be aware of the dangers when using generators and inverters.
Your house has a Earth leakage unit, this trips with any leakage of power to earth from live or neutral at 20 Milli Amps.
When using the above, you have no protection from electrocution. Beware of leaky pumps, heaters, badly insulated electrical joints, terminal strip connectors etc. :nono:

So often small things make life easier and better. I was battling to open the lid and keep it there, either I would flip it all the way over or I would place a small stick to hold it up.
Both options had limitations, the stick one in particular and I have the bruised to prove it.
So I went to the hardware store
kitchen section (mica hardware) and got one of those extendable arms they use to hold top lifting kitchen doors open with. R140 give or take.
I had some difficulty in attaching it and I def wanted it attached INSIDE the hood as the tank has beautiful lines with the cabinet that I did not want upset.
So I screwed the one section in on the base of the lid and then worked out the position where to place a small block of wood to attached the top of the arm
I will post a few pics.
But in all its brilliant, lifting the lid is easy and stays up perfectly. I am lank chuffed with itJ
Oh I thought about the size too, and basically went for a larger arm than smaller, as I will only use one so wanted a more robust one. To have two would complicate the installation by having to match it carefully

I left the tank too settle after buying it from Leosha for about a month now.
I thought it is time to give the fish a new land-scape.
I use Tufa rock as a base since it has lots of holes allowing for flow.
I added an extra pump behind the rock work and pointed another inlet behind the rocks to sensure enough flow.
Now I can only view the tank form the front, but I think my inmates appreciate their new living space :P
So here it is before my new scaping:

I've been doing this hobby for a while now. One thing that I've noted is that most new people entering the hobby thinks that no one else has been this stupid before. Well, you are wrong, wrong, wrong. :)
I don't even know where to start....I've done so many stupid things.
BTW.....this is just a condensed list.
I didn't install drip loops (If you don't know what that is, find out now)
I wanted a moonlight and thought I could make one with a cheap party light bulb. Blue bulbs were out of stock but they had red. So I thought that would be fine. People older in the hobby will understand this completely.....Let's all say it now.....Sie...Ann...Oh...Bac...Tere....E...Uh.
I wanted to feed enough so that the flora and fauna in my sandbed didn't starve
I bought several things that looked pretty before learning their care needs
I researched and found what I needed, decided it was too expensive, then after 3 or 4 months, went and bought what I knew I should have purchased in the first place, thereby making an expensive hobby even more expensive.
I darn near burned down my house with myself and my dogs in it
The truth is, I could go on and on and on.....but it's good to ask questions of people who've been around a while. Sara is quite bright but I'm sure she has some "School of Hard Knocks" stories as well. I'm sure she would rather have you ask her rather than have you learn it the hard way too.

Hi guys
Purchased a RO unit from Dorry Pets today, but I think the water pressure in my house is too low. I'm only getting a steady drip from the unit. What should the flow be?
Also, after leaving it to run for a couple hours, the TDS reading is 12, but I think that may be related to the low water pressure?
If that's the case, where can I get the add on pump to increase the pressure?

A woman was helping her husband set up his computer, and at the appropriate point in the process, the computer advised him that he would now need to enter a password. Something he will use to log on. The husband was in a rather amorous mood and figured he would try for the shock effect to bring this to his wife's attention. So, when the computer asked him to enter his password, he made it plainly obvious to his wife what he was entering by stating each letter out loud as he typed:
P...E...N...I...S
His wife fell off her chair laughing when the computer replied:
**** PASSWORD REJECTED. NOT LONG ENOUGH***

What you reckon, is this a shed or a dead hitchhiker ?
-
Firstly are these creatures intentionally bleached and for what reason or is this cause from shipping around the world.
I understand the feeding regime to get a bleached anemone to recover it's zooxanthellae.
Once the anemone starts going from white to brown, how long would it take to recover it's natural colour or could the brown/beige be it's natural colour ?
I have also noticed although feeding is important for the creature to recover they grow very quickly when feed regularly.
My unit has double in size in 2 months. If I keep going like this it will be the size of a soccer ball before the year is out.
Any suggestions ?

My nitrates are sitting comfy well under 5. I only get about 10mm skimmate a week (like pee) which is nothing. Does this mean the nutrient levels in the tank are that low? I'm using a weipro skimmer (not by choice). I know its crap but surely my nitrates would be climbing then?. Got a sixline, 2 percs, ±10 hermits and snails.
Can someone enlighten me? (I think I'm just craving to see a filthy collection cup:))

After reading this article
[www.reefs.org]
I wonder how well we are doing with our Nennies
Maybe we can start a poll to see what the average life span is RSA reefers can keep their Nennies for.
Accordsing to the article, Nennies are practically immortal in Nature while in our systems the best of the best struggle to keep them alive for more than 2 years...
So who has had their Nennie the longest?
Also the article raises a few very important points we all should keep in mind next time we consider buying a Nennie because they are "easy" to keep!

Hi guys, I have recently started up my first two marine tanks. They have been goign for about 3 months. Both tanks are standard 4 foot setups. Everything has been okay until now... One of my tanks has got an outbreak with a red coloured algae which is starting to form a layer on top of my live rock and coral sand. What is the cause and the best way to get rid of this?

This is my last tank that needs to go
Aquah2o Nile Tank. No sump. But the back pane can be drilled as I have done on my other h2o tanks.
L = 120 cm
w = 46 cm
h = 70 cm (waterlevel at 60cm)
Cabinet = 80cm high
Yes I will clean it :) I dont sell dirty tanks. The top enclosure have some minor damp damage due to running as a discus tank at 30C. The cabinet is perfect.
Tank + cabinet = R1700
Canister filter is an AFC 1000 (100lt/hour) = R300
Take both and ill include a brand new 150w radiant
MH light fitting with ballast and 2 x 300w heaters. And any/all other powerheads and goodies still lying around. Canister is full of ceramic rings thingy's.
There could be some serious bargains here !!! Snooze you looze

PS. bring a strong friend.

A bizarre sequence of events has got me thinking that maybe the economic damage that load shedding is causing.... is.... believe it or not... more sinister than we realise.
It started with my tv; and then my father in laws, and then my brothers. They all popped their tubes. Since the new load shedding cycle started. Two of these were less than a year old and both with 5 year warranties.
At the same time my aircons started popping. Three in two months.Technicians tell me that the compressors cannot handle the power surge and cook themselves. Two of these aircons are also still under warranty. Thank the stars.
Surgeons disaster got me thinking that if a substation can literally explode from current overload. is it posssible that these spikes in power supply could be responsible for more damage than we realise.

Im looking for a tank size 1.2M length must have hight pref 700 to 800 if higher the better. Must include sump and stand.
My tank size is 1.5m 750h 600w 10mm glass, includes stand and sump 1.1m 450h 450w.

Ok one 1.8 m is NOT enough. I would like to do a DSB for my main display tank and I thought of running one in main display but that will work out very expensive, especially if we(yes you are all involved in this one!) aim for 12-15cm depth., plus I am not sold on the aesthetics of a DT DSB.
So I want to do, a wide long shallow tank of +- 1.2m by 800mm by 400-500mm which I can run a DSB in and combine as a frag farm. Place intense lighting and supply you buggers with corrals for free (wee man yours will be kept for when you get to sa
.you know u are coming!)
. Also I would like to build three small chambers into the tank where I could specifically breed brine shrimp to over flow into the tank, down the over flow and into the main display tank. The adults being scooped and used as live food.
So kind of a three in one tank, and I am sure there are major limitations I have not thought of. Suggestions on why I should NOT do this would be greatly appreciatedJ

AWESOME frags mofro! Superbly packaged (they travelled in style ;)) as well; one of the "extra" frags is now 2 frags but other than that those are the most unstressed looking shipped SPS I've seen... The colours are amazing, I hope they stay that way (or at least close) :p
They look like beacons of blue under actinic, and actually kinda under normal lights as well...

Got this beaut over the weekend. I've read they need to be placed on the substrate but I'm concerned it wont get enough light(T5) down there. Is this an issue where I've placed it. Also how much damage can my clowns do to it?

Hello people, which backgrounds do you guyz think would be better for the backgrounds off your tanks (Black or Blue)? take into consideration the algae that grows on the back over time glass (Which almost never gets cleaned). Im just curious on the peoples preference on which is more eye catching. :whistling:

I'm going to build a new tank (on a budget) as soon as i'm back from holiday in july (varsity holidays)
Here's what i'm planning.
Display:
80mm x 500mm x 500mm. Total volume 200L. Thickness of glass? Approximate cost?
Sump: not sure on dimensions, but around 50L. Is this enough?
Lighting, T5's. Not sure on the unit
Skimmer: TS1
What do you think? total water vol of around 250L
Else i'll build a 600mm x 600mm x 600mm cube???

I am planning to make a collect day this week-end to re-stock my cold water rock pool tank with fish (not klippies or gobies) . I normally go to Kleinmond but thats quiet far to go. Does anyone know of good rock pools closer to Cape Town that You've seen fish in, that is also not a marine reserve. I use fishing nets so am looking to go at low tide for the small rock pools.

Hi All,
Ive got some limited experience in fresh water tanks and played around with some oscars and later some discuss. Then I went diving in Sodwana........ and ever since then, simply have to get a Saltwater system setup.:yeahdude:
Obviously this is more of a science and i anticipate many errors, hours of research and hopefully not too much cash washed away. But I shall prevail. Keen as ever..
I reckon Im going to start off on a nano and go from there
Looking forward to bugging all of you with amateur-ish questions!!! haha, we all start somewhere!

OK here it comes fellows, I will attach photos at the end as always asked and i have a few questions for the experts at the end.
I done quite a bit of reading on this since hobby since last year June and like anyone new took advice and jump into it .As always experts are always to proud to say out loud to the new guys starting out by advising them that this is a expensive hobby out right. and also the famous advice bigger is better. I went out and bought a 2m tank that had built in filters on the side again experts and LFS told me to take it out and get a sump. after pricing glass to build a sump i was dumb founded, then Paid a visit to Peterb LFS and he sold me a sump 1200x400x400 with the front glass cracked for R200 bucks I then went to a glass shop and bought a new glass 1200x400 and paid R580 bucks.ok so now I had the basics, you guys must be joking then I had to drill a hole in the tank and create a outlet for the sump which cost me another R275 for a glass cutter to come to my house and drill this hole for me.OK now I thought I could start and then was shocked on the prices of salt instant Ocean, gravel ,heaters, lights ,LR etc and boom I took a step back and relooked this. By accident I walked into a LFS and bought my current tank below which came with everything to start and paid R5000.00 for the lot.Thats a brief history of how I got suckered or started. Below is what I have currently and it has been running now for close to 3 months now.

Is this normal? Should i remove the aggressive one?? I thought these clowns are suppose to be peaceful towards one another.

Hi guys, could you please help me with a ID on the following starfish? I gave into temptation and bought it after it had been in the dealer's tank for about 2 months. The photo quality is bad as I used my phone's camera, if necessary I will take another with my digital.

Hi there
i have a nitrate problem of 50ppl (the second dark red pic before the end on the sera nitrate test kit)
i do a 10% water change every week. and have upped my water changes to more often to help bring it down but it doesn't seem to help. I have tried nitrate minus and it's done nothing. all my fish and corals are healthy but i have lots of hair algae!!! my tank is 1.5 metres and holds 515 litres WITHOUT my sump. my sump is about 1.2 metres and i'm not sure how many litres it holds- it has a live sand bed in it in one compartment, aragonite in the next and a skimmer on the end compartment with my return pumps.
I have have 3 clowns, 1 tang and 2 dawf angels... some leathers, polyps and mushrooms, and blue sponges. - no fish have died and not sure why my water is so bad. it has been running for 1 year and 1 month. everything is thriving except 1 of my leathers who isn;t opening otherwise polyps are multiplying at a very fast rate and mushrooms are having babies... fish are healthy.
plse help - could it be my protein skimmer... i got it with the tank from the guy i bought it from - it's home made but skims fine.
not sure what to do.
thanks for whatever help you can give

Ok, so I was only going to start this thread once everything was setup, but there are a few questions I would like to ask regarding equipment, so I figured now is as good a time as any. I'm working on a 250L setup, measurements are 1500mm x 450mm x 450mm
I've been reading up on wave makers, and get the basic concept that they alternate the flow of water in the tank, different to a powerhead which just flows in one direction. So my question is, would this not be better to have than powerheads around the tank? Or would the function of the powerheads then become more to keep stuff from settling on the bottom?
Also, would having a wave maker not restrict you in what you could keep in the tank, as the flow may be too big for certain things?
I have a few questions on filtration, but I'm still getting those diagrams together.

man i got load shedding for 6 hours yesterday, the third day in a row, bringing the total to 16 hours in three days. Thats tough for my little reef. Lost a clown and a reagal hasnt surfaced from the reef yet but he might have been having a lie in as I leave early in the morning.
but its the other guys I am worried about, the goat fish has lost colour, all fish are chatting closely to the grooming palour of shrimps and they ahve marine itch, flicking off on the reef which is a new development. I am stressed that i am getting an outbreak which i wont be able to controll.
i have back up power sourced but not installed yet.
can anyone elaborate on marine itch (or is it justa blanket term). do i need to be looking closely for an outbreak or something? I did a water change at 4am this morn, 20% and have the ro going to make water for another one tomorrow morning. Anything else I can and should be doing?

I have a 70 gal. tank.
I have two medium sized power heads (900L/h each), one fluval 404 (1300L/h), and one fluval 204 (680L/h). I added the first fish to the tank about a week ago - two clown fish. I have noticed that during the two load shedding times we have had this week, the clowns seem more comfortable when there is little or no water movement. In fact, the only time I have seen them playing in the anemone and swimming around the tank is when the water movement was zero thanks to no power.
Currently there is water movement over most of the tank in some way or another. It is not that strong (imo). Any ideas?

Hi there,
I setup my tank about 7 weeks ago. Introduced Live Rock about 2 weeks after that. Finally I got 2 clowns and a white looking sea anemone (was in the tank at the pet shop with the clowns) a week ago. I have been busy the past few days and have not looked much at my tank. Tonight while I was looking closely, I suddenly saw a horde of what looks like parasites or tiny little brine shrimp thingies in the tank! They certainly don't look normal and I highly doubt these transparent little creatures are ok... help!

I've been reading a bit about coralline algae (Family Corallinaceae of the order Corallinales) and I wonder if it reduces the efficiency of filtration of live rock. Now in theory people say it reduces the filtration capacity of live rock because it is an encrusting algae with a calcareous skeleton that covers the surface of the live rock, covering the "pores" in the rock so water doesn't enter it a effectively and get filtered.
What are your opinions on the topic?
I must say i've seen some nano's with nothing but purple rocks, and they're thriving (Even though the filtration capacity of the LR could be lower?). Important to remember many nano's are run purely on LR and charcoal etc. without skimmers.
Also what do people think about products like CaribSea's Purple up?
"Purple-Up is a new pink and purple coralline algae accelerator. Since Purple-Up is not a fertilizer, it does not promote the growth of nuisance algae. How does it work? Purple-Up uses a unique dual method approach to coralline algae acceleration. It contains ionic calcium which immediately raises dissolved calcium levels in your aquarium water. At the same time Super Sea Calcium (a 10 micron aragonite powder derived from natural seawater) targets the live rock surface. Super Sea Calcium dissolves in situ; delivering calcium, strontium, magnesium, and carbonate right where its needed. Purple-Up also replenishes iodine; an essential element for coralline algae tissues that quickly becomes depleted in closed systems. Purple-Up is an excellent addition to any aquarium with stony corals too! One bottle of Purple-Up replaces the typical multi product recipe for successful coralline algae growth favored by advanced aquarists."

My name is Juan. I've had my aquarium for +-20yrs now. Small (900 x 30 x 45) but it's been running succesfully for the past 8 years or so. The rest of the time I spent playing around, trying different systems etc. I finally decided to stick with what I've got: 2 anemones, 4 clowns, 4 tubeworms, 1 damsel, 1 mandarin. As you can see, no corals and only hardy fish (exept for mandarin probably) - AND THAT'S WHY I'M HERE!!!! Upgrade on the way!!!
The tank i'm planning needs to be custom built because of it's odd size but in the end will hold +-750l. The sump i'm planning will take about 250l - is this enough? This question might sound silly to some of you, but please bear in mind that i've never used anything else than a undergravel filter with two powerheads for filtration - not even a protien skimmer!
Before i started surfing the web and joining this site i was hell bent on using the same filtration system purely because i know and trust it so well, but obviously for this size thank it wouldn't be the best option. Plus the display tank will be used as a room devider so hiding equipment in it will be impossible.
Altough i do have experience in marine fish keeping i consider myself a beginner purely because of the lack of experience i've got with "modern" technology. Any help/suggestions especially on the sump will be highly appreciated.
Thanks!:wave2:

Hey Guys
I was staring at my Sun last night and suddenly it moved! Just such a fright. Then for the first time I noticed that most of the live rock the coral is on is more alive tha I thought! Half the thing is a bivalve of some sort.
Is this good or bad? I am worried than the bivalve might die of starvation eventually like most bivalves...what do I do then? It has been going for more than 6 months now in the nano.

I cant find a thread for this on the Forum so might aswell start one. Beach sand or otherwise knows as "Silica Sand". Who is using this in there display tank as a substrate and DSB for the sump? Also Advantages/Disadvantages off having it? Please post. I think it would be nice to have this thread as a reference for it as Beach Sand is always a controversial topic for Reef Tanks. Moved livestock over to a new tank about 3 weeks ago. For the last 2 weeks i've had a diatom outbreak. I'm sure this is probably because I didn't use the same substrate, was all new.
When will it go away?

hey warr i think you'll dig this.
I had some trouble feeding my CBB, i wanted to get a closed mussel and drill a small hole in it, but i didn't get a closed museel so i git a oyster(closed).
i made a hole, and placed it in my tank.
after a few seconds my marbel starfish opened the shell, it made a moerse "klap" noise so i went and have a look and so that he opend the shell.

Hey guys I'm building 4 tanks and 1 sump.
The dimensions of the tanks will be 600x450x450 and the water level will be at 400mm
Don't have a idee of the sump yet.
I'm using euro bracing of 590 x 0.30mm and the lengths of the tanks.
I got the glass this afternoon, and i have finished building 2 tanks and 3/4 with the 3rd one.
I'll paste pic's tomorrow, "lekker moeg nou"

hey guys,
can you give me the basics into nennies. I have a beautiful green bubble tip and he is happily swaying in medium to light flow, looking great. I did try feed him a little muscle and some crab meat last night but how do these guys actually feed? i bdefrosted it in a empty glass in warm water, squeezed the liguid out the meat and then chopped it into small sized pieces. I turned power heads off and then target fed (scared the crap out the poor clowns but they seem to ahve short memories and promptly stole it from the nennie. How do they feed? Do they take the food from tentacle to mouth? How do you access the health and happines of a nennie, is it tentacle extension, colour, movement around the tank?
all help will be greatly appreciated.

I've just picked up two
Nemateleotris decora.
So stoked as I love these little guys! I've heard they can be aggressive unless you have a mated pair, well I saw these two juveniles together in a tank and I thought i'd try my luck.
They're still busy acclimating so no pics yet but here's a shot of the species for any who don't know what i'm talking about!

I have been growing cheato in my sump for the last 6 months. 6 weeks ogo I started using phosphate remover. There was an instant decrease in algae. In the last 2 weeks or so the cheato has progressively died back due to lack of nutrients I assume? I have not been measuring phosphate levels as I have not found an affordable and readable test kit (the Red Sea kit is useless).
Have I done the right thing by removing all of the cheato? My thinking was that the decaying cheato was responsible for a slight bloom in hair algae in the display over the last few days.
Has anyone had success using both cheato and phos remover simultaneously?

Hey guys
The weekend I wanted to add the extra base supports to ym 4FT L tank.
After remiving the substrate I noticed two big cracks in the bottom :(
The tank has a double base and is not leaking.
The tank only had water on it for 2 days
I have contacted the LFS, but no response so far.
If they refuse to fix it on their costs, how can I fix it on my own?
Would putting another pane of glass over the cracked parts help at all?
I am so dissapointed :( I wanted to get the tank started this week.

Hi Guys
I have (read had :( ) a pretty large collection of Z's. I added two more fish about 3 weeks ago, and since then the Z's have been in a steady downward spiral. They don't seem to open up anymore, and most along the outside edges are dying off now. I've been watching the fish, but they don't go anywhere near it from what I've seen. Water params haven't changed at all. Could it be something I'm missing? I even thought it may be the water flow, and so turned off the powerhead for 3 days, but no change. Any other ideas?

I have a question for the guys who run the CTRC.At the meeting it was said that we should support the MAC accredited shops and the one guy made a statement that we should only support one spiecific shop which is MAC approved.Well I was chatting to a guy over on Reef Central and it turns out that there are NO MAC accredited shops in South Africa. So I thought maybe the guy is a accredited importer, well there are no South African importers accredited to MAC .What are the true facts here guys?

The last week has been really stressful.
I have had quite a few fish die and I can't work out why.
I have a Hippo that had whitespot really bad, that has gone but now he seems to have weird black blotches on his blue skin.
The other weird thing is I thought the Hippo would be the fish to die if any.
The fish i have lost all were feeding and very active, then the following morning dead or missing (I have a very good CUC)
Water parameters are as follows:
ph - 8.3
meq/l - 4
Salinity - 1.025
Temp - 25.2
Nitrite - 0.07
Nitrate - 7
NH3 - 0.08
PO4 - 0.04
Could the NH3 or Nitrite at these levels be killing off the fish ?
All corals (even SPS) are doing well, nemmie is also looking great and feeding like a beast.
Any ideas what parasite, bacteria or something else could be killing off my fish

Ok i've never been much of a DIY man, but the lack of light in this nano is starting to bug me! 128L tank with 2x24W PC's. I mean come on! :P My 24G JBJ has 72W at least!
Here's a pic of hood on the new tank:
As you can see they've used the 24W PC's instead of the 36W PC's because they've put in a "slide function" for the hood. thus the areas on either side of the splash guard will need to be cut out in order to put in wider lighting.
Basically here's what i'm asking:
1.) Would somebody help me to upgrade these lights? (I'm not so used to DIY stuff, especially lighting! Also worried I would ruin my hood as I don't know what i'm doing exactly. hehe
2.) Would it be best to try squeeze in another 24W, or would it be best to cut away the side bits (stupid "slide function") and install 36W PC's. Although I take it i'd need a new splashguard then?
I don't know where to look for the parts i'd need and i'm not sure on the best tools to use?
If anyone is good at DIY, please lend a hand ;)
Many thanks

Hello Everyone. I have kept tropical fish for a total of about 15 years. I am in my first week of marines. Any advice, suggestions or instructions will be greatly appreciated. I have some clove polyps that are duking it out for rock space with some of my zoanthids. At first I was sure the cloves would win... now I'm not sure. The zoanthids seem to be holding their ground for the past few weeks. I thought about intervening (since I favor the zoanthids for this space), but then I figured it might be more fun to just get a beer, sit back and take bets... so what do y'all think? Who's going to win? (pics tomorrow)

Possibly one for Thallion (or Dogshow?)
Out of the 8 pups, the 7 boys are rapidly gaining weight (from around 300g to the biggest at 600g in 4 days)
BUT the little girly is struggling to put any weight on, the boys are too strong for her to get in and get her share, we have some special formula for young pups called Lactol which we are suplimenting her feeding, but it is tricky to get her to feed from a bottle, so.. any ideas guys, she is holding her own (just) but i know that my wife would be heart broken if Mouse (her name now) didn't make it.

I am getting conflicting tempreture readings which is causing stress (to me) as well as my fish i'm sure. I have a small grey digital battery operated thermometer which has a white lead prob. I also have one on those cheaper glass floating thermometers. They differ by 4 degrees. What should I do. Spend money on good water heaters which have their own inbuilt thermometers or buy more expencive thermometers with supposidly cheaper heaters. My system is 200litres so should I have 2 smaller heaters or just 1 large? I realise the more one spends the better the product but we all know about budgets so maybe someone has a good working combination.:whistling:

Hi guys,
Last week I had this "brain wave of an idea". I've decided to change the crushed coral gravel in my system to river sand.
I've done this for the following reasons:
1. there were very little creatures in the crushed coral - I think (and a couple guys said) that the crushed coral was to "grof"
2. Because the crushed coral was so "grof" it allowed alot of detrius to settle between it, which in turn caused some unwanted nitrates/phosphates ext...
The problem now is the sand is blowing all over my tank - my poor cabage coral are covered with sand as well as my LR. I've tried to change the possitions of my powerheads - this helped alot, but i still have a problem with sand.
Can anyone please give me some advice..?
-
Hello all - between LikesFish and myself we have just had an interesting difference in our knowledge/experience w.r.t whether dried fish food, in either flake or pellet form, might be better w.r.t to nitrates/phosphates (phosphorous) etc (all the bad things in our tanks that could possibly cause extreme nuisance algae growth), compared to frozen fish food.
Could everyone please supply your comments on this?
I would especially invite the more experienced reefers and guru's to comment and discuss this?
Many thanks.

Hey guys
My shroom colony is doing some very inetresting things. I'd liike to know if this is good or bad.
First funny thing:
One shroom would lift his mantle up while the other shroom brushes his mantle up and down the others exposed stem...
I noticed a new small little shrooms appear between the two
Second:
The are getting very big and seem to be competing for light. Seems they are taking turn in over lapping each other. Or they push each others mantles so that it looks like two mountaisn with a deep valey. Are they pushing each other away?
O.K so only two funnies I can remeber now. I'll o watch them again tonight.. :)

Hi Reefers
Where in CPT can I find kalwasser...? I know some pharmacies do sell but I have heard that you get different grades and some pharmacies sell the not so good grade...
How do I add it to my tank, first mix it up with RO/tank water? Do I add vinegar and how much...
A nother stupid question, does kalkwasser replace calcium? I have heard that people get better results with kalkwasser than powder/liquid calcium...
My reason for asking this is calcium is working me out to expensive and I feel I would be getting better results with kalkwasser...
Help would be highly appreciated...:)
Regards
Jason

Hello people. Im wanting to setup a sump for my new 250L Reef tank. Ive been using Google and reading here gathering information but i have a few concerns i hope you people could help me with. First let me post some info about my sump.
The sump is a 70L tank and will work on the wet/dry or trickle system. It will have 3 compartments. 1st for the water leading into the sump + Skimmer, 2nd for the DSB (15cm) + some live rock on it (Yes/No?), 3rd for the Heater and return pipe.
My concerns are overflowing, will my current sump (all still on paper) cause a flooding problems, or any other problems at all? or am i on the right track?

Hi guys
Since I'm new on MASA I thought I'd post some pics of my tank.
This was my first tank when I started in 2006. Hardly anything in there. I bought the clowns, live rock and shrimps from a guy at work.
Just before I moved to the new one, this is what it looked like.
Preparing the stand and tank for the migration.
Tank on the stand.
Now to get that big tank on the right to where the one on the left is standing... not a easy job...
All the livestock, corals and water put one side. Not ideal but it's all i had.
Done!! <phew> What a mess..
The old tank. Needs a bit of cleaning up. Also had a funky smell to it...
With the lights on and all the liverock, corals and fish dumped in. They couldn't survive any longer in the temporary holding buckets.
More to follow...

I've just recently sorted my tank out, new SB, new sump, put my skimmer in on monday TS1 (big ups to lanzo):yeahdude:
but im growing this very fine algae on my sand bed (DT) and on my rocks, i have about 1.5 kg of live rock just to seed the bed.

not too sure waht to do, or if its natural in a new system.
sump = bio balls-from old set up
ceramics-new
filter floss at inlet - bout a week old
TS1 skimmer - 3 days
all in all tanks been up and running for bout +- 2 weeks. got me some little worms in my SB (thats good right?)

The pic is of the sump being built to the back of the tank. The right hand side is the return chamber with the skimmer pump in and the middle chamber will hold the skimmer body as well as a dsb and lr on top of eggcrate. the dividing chamber has a hole drilled in to connect the skimmer pump and body.
The left hand chamber(Partition not fitted yet.) will hold the return pump. I am planning to drill a hole where the black circle is to let the return back into the tank go through.
Will it be ok to pump the return water in at the bottom of the tank and have the water rise up to the c2c at the top.
Also, will a 1900l/h return pump be ok for the 90 l system?

Hello all,
It is not only corals, the heading is a bit of a misnomer !
I am packing in my tank and settling for a smaller one with less equipment. The current power outages in my area are really screwing things up.

Hi everyone - quickly browsing through the UK magazine, "Practical Fish Keeping". Came across the following:
URL:
Omnima*Limited
URL2:
Omnima*Limited*::*Metal...
Sorry - it's a bit small (the pic)....
I have now read something about the "ICECAP Spotlight fitting"..... Wonder if this runs of a "standard" Metal Halide Ballast (either electronic or magnetic)?
What do you think of this?

Hey Guys

Hey Guys
I have been reading a bit on my Nennie, but the info on what a healthy or sich nennie looks like or acts is not very straight forward.
Can we perhaps get a little list together of signs of healthy and un-healthy nennies.
Number 1 I can add under Un-happy nennies
They wonder around the tank (trying ot get a more suitable spot)
Number 1 for healthy Nennies
They de-flate and re-flate every 5-10 hours to replace the "sceletal" water
More points under both please :)

Hello all.
First of all let me just say that i was shocked to find out that there was actually such a nice forum on marine aquariums for South African people. I though that when I started looking around i'll end up on a UK forum (since this is where i learned everything i needed to know about freshwater tropical aquariums)
Now. Let me introduce myself. Im living in Pretoria and have been playing around with Freshwater Aquariums on and off for many years. I have only set up my own Tropical Tank in my home office in December last year after a 10 year break. At the moment my tanks are running without any problems for the last couple of months and although they are beautiful to look at and fun to maintain, i would like to get into the the marine side of things.
Just a bit of background. Many years ago, when I was a small boy, my dad and two of his friends set up a 3m(L) x 1.2m(H) x 1.2(D) custom tank in our house in Port Elizabeth. It took them the best part of a year to get everything sorted and installed and after filling the tank and battling to get the aquascaping and water quality just right, my dad had a heart attack and we moved to Pretoria. We never had the chance to really get into the whole thing and having said that, I was very young and did not really understand what they were doing.
Since that time, one of my dreams is to set up a marine tank. When staring with the Freshwater Tropics I basically knew nothing about the whole setup procedure and learned everything I know today off the internet and forums like this. One thing I have found is that Pet shops should not be trusted with advice I have not had any useful advice from any of them (with the exception of one particular guy)
The reason I joined here is to gain as much knowledge about the working of a Marine tank as possible before I even start to think of buying anything. I jumped into the Freshwater Tropical scene without doing proper research and I promised myself this time I will first get all the info, then plan what I would like to end up with and then start putting it together, with the guidance of people who have the knowledge and don't just tell you things to make a quick sale.
Like I said I don't know anything about tank size, filtration, water quality etc. and would like to ask you guys if you can point me in some kind of direction on the net where newbies like myself can read up about this. I know tropics and marine have some common ground but I also know marine biology is much more involved that the run-of-the-mill tropic tank.
I would really love some info and feedback and I hope have a long and educational stay here on your forum.
Regards

-
I have been testing my water parameters with 2 test kits that give readings in KH and meq/L
Now the KH reading has been reading in the region of 9, which is recommended.
The meq/L reading has always been 2, and although NSW is 2-3, it is recommended to have aquarium water at 4-6.
Also 1 meq/L corresponds to 2.8 KH, so theoretically I either have the following:
2 / 3.2 meq/L
or
9 / 5.6 KH
Does this indicate that the Tropic Marin Alkalinity test is just crap or do these two type of tesst always vary like this ?

Hey Guys
I ahve this Lion in my Nano. Got it with the Nano...
I don't think it is really suitable for the tank although he seems very happy and eats well.
At this stage I feed him krill with a pair of foreseps (I'm a bit scared of him)
I would love to trade him for a frag or two or three if I can fiend someone generous enough ;) Particularry Zoanthus. I have an orange with blue one and would like to expand on the variaty...
I am not in too much of a hurry since I really enjoy him, but it will be best for him in the end...
BTW the frags should be suitable for a Nano, have a 24 G JBJ...

Hi
I have no experience with marine tanks but i used to breed freshwater fish with jason (ocean i think) and i have loads left.
I was thinking in a few months if it could be possible for me to buy an octopus?
I think he (ocean) said there are some people here that could import 1 for me. True?
So beening a rookie and salt water i few question about the octopus:
1. How big will the tank need to be.
2. about how much would everything it cost?
3. Could i keep any other marine life it there?
4. What must i feed it?
5. What maintenance would i have to do?
6. What type of octopus would you recommend.
Thanks

So I have been wondering what impact will the extinction of abalone have on our oceans. I understand that my children will never see an Abalone in that case etc and any species we lose will always be a great loss, but after some searching on the net I cant find what ecological impact the extinction of abalone will have.
So people please enlighten me:thumbup:

Hi all.
Can you please make some recommendations as to where I should go to look for a good variety of good quality equipment at decent prices. So far I've found Mega Mica (Willow Bridge, Tyger Valley) to be good in terms of variety, but have not compared prices or quality yet.
I'm new to this hobby and I've already made a mess up of my tank twice, so I'm into my third tank now.
My first tank turned out to be a "skollie" tank, and this limited me too much so I gave all the fish back to a pet shop and started over intending to start a community tank (lots of neons, guppies and a few dwarf gouramies, and an elephant nose and a butterfly fish)
The butterfly fish in fact is the only survivor of my original tank. The community tank got sick. Everything died. So I started over, scrubbed the gravel, the plastic plants, and the ship-wreck. The real plants and a few other rocks I threw away. This time I committed to regular vacuuming and filter cleaning, doing water changes and preparing the water before hand, etc.
But I'm still learning as I go along.
Strangely my original "skollie" tank was realy low maintenance. I only did one 50% water change every 3 to 4 months, and that without even vacuuming !
So all advice and hints from the wize spirits that lurks in these forums are very welcome.
Some questions:
How SHOULD I be treating my water? Nitrate down? Nitrite and Nitrate test kits? Ph-test kits? Amonia testing? Hardness testing?
Can someone also please explain the different filtration systems so that I can understand WHY they work - I'm the type of person who needs to understand things in order to remember them!
Thanx!

Hi everyone
The bug bit me about 3 years ago after seeing a nano tank at work that some colleges set up. It was only a year later that that I decided to start my first marine tank. Having had no experience in fish tanks whatsoever, not to mention marine tanks, I got stuck in and bought the basics. Now 2 years down the line, a flooded living room(twice) and some colorful words:censored: later I'm still in it.
None of it would have been possible without the valuable advice of fellow MASA member Puppy. I'm sure you all know him. He has really helped me tremendously in setting up my tank and a big thanks goes to him.
Up until December last year i still had the standard 1.2m(240L) tank. Having 2 weeks of holiday and not knowing what to do with my time I decided to "upgrade" to a 1500x500x600 (450L) tank.(Actually Puppy's old tank) That was a fun couple of days...
But enough blabbering from me. I'll try and upload some pics soon.
l8r!

What would be your dream system? Cost is no issue, doesnt have to be monstrous just something that you would want in your house
I think I would like?
2.4m x 1.2m x .08 deep
Lighting - 4 x 54W ATI power modules
Skimmer - mhh reef octo DNW 400
2 x Tunze waveboxes
2 or 3 isolated rock structure for an open look with mostly LPS and heavily stocked with fish
Huge DSB
4ft Cheato area
2 x 4ft frag tanks plumbed into the system in the tank room at the back
OK so what would you guys like?

Hi,
Currently I vacuum my tank twice a week because the Pleco is :bigshit: -ing so much. To vacuum properly I have to move the decor around. Or is there a better way?
I'd like my plants to stay planted... IN the substrate.
What is more is I'd like to experiment with making part of my tank, say the left half, with a fine substrate, and the other side with a courser substrate. I can imagine that I would be able to get it like that with much effort, but how to I maintain it like that? I don't want the two to become one after a few weeks... So... Any advice from the wizer spirits would be much appreciated!

Hi all, after many a year out of the hobby, I'm back on track and about to set up my tank up again. It's been in the garage for the last 10 years :whistling: and was last used as a house for my daughters two hampsters. I hope the silicone is still OK!!
A trip last week to my local fish shop got me interested enough to start googling about marine fishkeeping and I've been fully bitten by the bug again. During my surfing last week I came across this here site and really enjoyed reading the posts. I like the way the site is layed out and find it easy to navigate. I've also been drooling over some of your lovely looking setups & found them truly inspirational. I'm glad I found you guys and very much look forward to being here :cheers2:

About a week ago I purchased a heteractis crispa form my LFS.
he came to me in a bleached state but this afternoon I noticed his tentacles turning pink, is this a sign he is regaining his zooxanthellae?
-
Urgent feedback required - some of my corals are having a problem. The litte tree one (don't know what it is actully called, but has a hard stem with cabbage ear branches)
has suddenly shrivelled up and looks as if it ready to die. have noticed a type of green furry growth on the underneath of the "leaves". There is also a grey jelly matter starting to grow on the sun coral, fox coral and brain looking coral. what must i do?
Have checked the water parameters and all is good however do not have a phosphate test kit - do have a phosphate remover which is functioning fine. All fish are full of beans, oh yes the bubble corals are also under stress.

During this journey of keeping marine animals in a Glassbox® many people enters your life via the interweb and otherwise, I though it would be nice if we can thank a few of them here
- Surgeon, for having the patience to answer all my questions and explaining everything twice, and for the frags (*yeah right some of them were monsters) and for still answering my questions, and looking after the tank when me and ANGRY are gone
- Tom, for being there whenever water needed to be changed, filling up my backup drum with Surgeon and a good reefchat most Sundays
- Chris my LFS for ordering the most bizzare items for me and phoning me whenever nice corals arrive
- Viper, Alan and Dragonreef for giving us a lekker place to chat
- ANGRY for looking after my tank when I am not home
- all Masadonians or their friendship
- Henk for bringing in decent food for my fishies
- JAcques and Wee-Man for always helping
I will still think of more as we go

Hey Guys
I while back I posted the 4FT L Tank thread. The tank was resting on polystyrene directly on to the frame (got it from the LFS like that). It was recommended that I should place a wood support under the tank.
I just to to find out what the ocnsensus is about which wood to use, how and with what to treat it.
I think one sugegstion was 15mm shutterply painted with paint and thinners mix.
Exact recipes for the technical idiot (me) please :whistling:

I want to get a t5 unit at the end of the month. My problem comes in with my tank size. It is 76cm, so its in-between the 60cm, 24w and the 90cm, 39w.
I don't want to spend a fortune so ati and geismann are out of the picture. Aquamedic have a nice 39w unit thats in my price range and I'm ok with the look of it overlapping the tank. I just want to know if there are any major downsides to having the overhang.
If so I was going to try the new(ish) hagen glo double 24w unit. I have read mixed remarks about it but the bad remarks seem to come from the people that haven't actually used it and write it off automatically cause it's not geismann or Tek or any of the other name brands. Don't know if anyone knows anything about them or actually has used one? They have a single (european made, high polished) reflector but the lights are spaced far apart to let light through and the reflector is parabolic(don't know how that helps).
Any comments will be appreciated.

Wich will be best selling my hardware & Lifestock seperately or as a whole? All cost me about R14 000 will R10 000 be a bit optimistic for the complete setup? Here is a list:
The tank is a 1,2 m 280L tank with a 60L sump/refugium. I have about 40kg's of Liferock, mostly Malaysian, some Kenian and a fine crushed coral substrate about 7cm's deep. In the sump I have a 20 w Full Spectrum light,2 Jebo Skimmers, a DSB, some Caulerpa and a return pump. In the hood I have 2x 54w T5's, One full spectrum the other actinic, a NO 40w actinic and 2x Fans.
And lifestock is as follow:
Fish:
1 False Percula
1 Watchman Goby
1 Foxface
1 Coral beauty
1 Algae Blenny
1 Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse
2 Payama Cardinals
Invertabrates:
2x Cleaner shrimp
2x Hermits (Bought as Blue-Legged Hermits, not so sure)
1x Anemone Crab
1x Debelius Reef Lobster(No problems yet!)
Couple of unknown snails
Corals:
Anemone(Not sure of species think its a H. Crispa)
1x Euphelia
1x Sinularia
Brown Button Polyps
Green Button Polyps (Frag)
2Blue Shrooms
Orange polyps living on a tube worm

I know its a bit of a tough question as everyone has their own views on this.
Tank is 130L
1 Midas blenny
2 Ocellaris clowns
I quite like it being understocked as it means less cleaning and maintenance for me.
If I buy a sixline wrasse will I still be able to stick to a single 10% water change a week etc?

A while ago i decided i needed a new bigger tank and wanted to see if a tank can be built out of wood. Here are a few pictures of the tank at various stages.
The tank dimensions are 13500 X 51 X 70 cm. When filled it hold about 330 litres water. It will have a sump of around 120 litres. The main tank occupant will be my juvenile octopus. So far the tank, including wood, glass, resin, scres, paint, pvc etc has cost a little over R1200.
I used 7-ply 18mm plywood, bought and cut at timbercity for only R300!! Sides are glued and screwed together. Eventually used over 100 screws in total. Then came the fun part of filling in all the slight imperfections with wood filler. Sanding the tank was also a bit of a mission. The entire tank, including the outside, recieved two coats of epoxy resin. If you look carefully you can see that the inside joins have been reinforced with fiberglass.
Apparently its not advisable to epoxy over paint, so i decided to colour the resin. The inside got another two thick coats of blue resin.
One of the benefits of using wood, is the ease of drilling, cutting etc. I have drilled holes for plumbing and electrics and should be able to drill holes even when the tank is filled.
I then gave the outside of the tank two coats of Plascon velvaglo, apparently this paint is water resistant and can withstand salt water. If i had to build this tank again, i might consider buying more expensive wood for the front, althought the black/blue combination looks awesome!
Then for the fun part - - putting in the glass. I bought a piece of 10mm glass ( 1300 X 56 cm) from a place in Parow for R350, less than half the price of the next cheapest quote. The glass fits in behind the front frame, so there is little to no chance of it ever falling out.
In the next picture you can see the plumbing. I designed my overflow so that water leaves from the bottom of the tank but the overflow is still at the top (if that makes any sense). The inlet is on the same side as the outlet, so i have pvc pipe running the length of the tank. I also put in two horizontal supports for extra strenght.
Heres the tank as it stands at the moment. Ignore the crap looking rocks in it, they only temporary!
Last weekend i filled it with water to check if it leaks. And it didnt. It didnt even bend from the water pressure. It seems to be alot stronger than a glass tank. Wood wont break if bumped either, which is an important thing in my house.
At the moment im having difficulty finding someone willing to make me artificial rock (i want to save on weight and the octopus has a habit of rearranging the tank). All the plumbing etc is lying on the floor wating to be connected. I even have the water ready. Im seeing a guy about rock this morning so will hopefully be able to fill the tank this weekend. Will post more pictures when it is finished.
Let me know what you think.

Hey guys
There are little egg sacks on my tank glass.
They look like little gelly sacks with 4-5 little white eggs in them. There are 3-4 of the jelly things in a cluster and two clusters in the whole Nano.
It is a 24G Nano with the following stock:
1 Drawf Lion
1 Mandarin
1 four stripe Damsel
1 blue devil damsel
1 common clown
1 bangaii cardianl
Torch coral
Radianthus
Sun coral
Tube anemone
2 Tube worms
1 turbo snail
few unidentified snails
4 Hermits
2 cleaner shrimps
Sorry I don't have a photo yet. Will try and get one tonight.
The egg sacks appeared while I was at work yesterday.
Hope ti is nothing bad like nudi's...

During today, powercuts, my backup power system didn't kick in and my Powder-Blue died.:(
I can only think it was due to lack of oxygen. My question is Bigger fish, bigger oxygen consumption or is this very species specific ?
All the other livestock survived but quite distressed.

Huge update! ;)
Alright, I was planning a possible upgrade in the future, and then this 34G just fell on my lap. And being quite fond of these all in one nano's I couldn't quite pass it up.
Here's a size comparison of my new BOYU TL-550 next to my old JBJ 24G Nano Cube. Difference is 10G (About 40L)
Poor quality pic, just for size comparison
Rear chambers, including skimmer on right. The horizontal piping is a temporary guard to stop my midas blenny jumping into the rear chambers
Skimmer was pulling clear liquid at first, but has started pulling some stuff out:
Tank is lightly stocked (1 midas blenny and 2 clowns, then some CUC) so I didn't expect skimmate to look too brown
PC Lighting (hopefully upgrading soon)

For the last year I've been rebuilding my tank. You may think it's a monster from the time-frame but it's only a 270L. I have been taking my time and trauling all these forums as I go - and broken this, then fixed that, then broken it again, then discovered a siphon I never thought of etc. :whistling:
But lo and behold - It is here and has water.....it even has live-rock.
This is the old tank
It was one of the old trickle filter in the back things that I bought second-hand. I slowly got rid of more and more of it and things were going well until a huge crash happened. This looks better than it actually did.:(
Still don't know why it crashed but I decided to do things again properly.

Don't know if you guys picked this up on MoneyWeb. I just caught a glimpse and the future looks dark. Kortbroek are planning to ban all saltwater import (corals and fish). The imposed ban will also strive to stop people from keeping such animals.
I'll see if I can find the link to the article again.
I really hope this is not true....

Hello people, new to the site but not completely to marines. Was over at SAReefkeeping until I got banned today for:

It sparked coz one off there members said my Aquascaping sucked and that i should remove all my SandStone and replace it with Live Rock (This would cost me about R2000-4000's worth off Live Rock) in my thread. My new Tank is only about 3 Days old and still sorting itself out. Anyways if i want to use SandStone I believe I should be able to make that decision without having to be told "No you are wrong remove it all!" or having the fear off being banned for using it as other reefers have had much success with it. Anyways i hope to receive a more welcomed and understanding community here otherwise i give up with SA Reefkeeping Online Community's
