I replaced my energy saver sump lights with a 150mh light and the algae is blooming. The tank does not really have algae left in it and the phosphate reading is almost nil. What is causing the strong algae growth then?

Hi,

These two fish were passed on to me from a friend.

When he bought them from the LFS a couple of months ago, they were not sure what fish these were and guessed that they were from the Damsel family.:whistling:

I am not so sure that this is true ......

When I feed them, they prefer meaty foods.

They are about 35mm long.

The always swim closely together and have teamed up with my Foxface to form a nice closeknit school, always flanking him.:)

Hope someone has an idea. I tried searching the Net but could not find anything.

What carbon is the best for reactors?

hey guys, i have tried a few kinds of carbon in my reactor, but i don't really know which brand is the best to use.

Some or maybe all will leak phos into tank?
Is a finer partical size(0.2mm-0.5mm) better than a bigger particle size((1cm)?

What is the best carbon for the cheapest price( because one need to change it every 2-3 weeks, and R200-R400 per month for carbon is a bit steep for me)

Thought i'd make a barrier to stop fish jumping into my rear sump. It's not 100% fool proof obviously but better than nothing and fits perfectly! You can also see the filter floss holder I made with egg crate.

Spent a good part of today upgrading my lighting! (somewhat). I find the BOYU came out with quite poor lighting, so I spaced the original PC's out a bit and fitted another 24W PC in the middle. Running off a seperate ballast, fits nice and snug ;)

Upgrade from 48W PC to a total of 72W PC, i'm sure my corals will appreciate it ;)

Only problem was I had to remove my LED moonlights to install the new lights. I'm going to buy a waterproof LED strip and stick it directly on my splashguard when I get the chance ;)

What you guys think?

Guys - what's up? I have posted many times on these forums now asking for those who placed their names next to the items I have for sale, to please come collect it. Everything is available and can be collected.

There is not much time left, then I'll put everything in storage and it is the end of this little chapter. Please - if you want your stuff come pay me and pick it up.

I still have 280kg of sand I want to get rid of, Punk and Crispin are interested but if anyone else wants it let me know as I need to get it out ASAP. I am asking R2.50 per kg - it is almost nothing.

Help. Will PC lights get too hot for a zip tie?

Bought another 24W PC Light (smallest PC light you get) but cannot get hold of a clip to hold it in place! ;(

These lights don't really get too hot, could I just use a zip-tie as a makeshift clip? Or would it melt the plastic?

This is the only piece of the skimmer that I did not make, I was lucky enough to have my brother in Australia to sent it to me.As you can see it is a beckett foam nozzle and came complete in this form

hey guys...been researching and reading all i can since i recieved all the great advice from the MASA massive and have stopped again with 1 question
Do I use a skimmer or not ???? have bought a Juwel setup from lfs

92x 41 x55, 180l with 2 x 35w T5s

I posed this question to lsf and he very confidently said not needed, reason because Juwel systems filter copes well with the FOWLR and 1 or 2 anemone that i want ....

i have no reason to doubt this advice except for nearly every MASA post i have read abt a basic tanks setup....I picked up as well that i do not have a sump((I can live with that and tank size cos it fits perfectly in the space i have))..SO on my OWN logic...was thinking

Should i use a protein skimmer anyway(side mount) with a pump?? Will it harm the system(FWLR) in anyway ? and lastly any thoughts abt the Weipro side mount skimmers?? anybody using them ???

This aint a serious prob...as tank arriving from jhb this week and am getting it on MON:thumbup: ...but have bought the reflectors,bulbs,aragonite,syth salt mix ..only short of Live rock and RO water....so i figured while i was prep shopping should i look at a Skimmer?.... Any thoughts ?

I am still quite new to this game and require some advice on Sumps. I have a couple small and very basic 4 foot systems with basic filtration and cannisters at the moment and have recently bought myself a big boy tank and am not sure in which direction to go towards. Could someone please help with some sump ideas and detailed descriptions?

Improve flow in my rear chambers - what pump to upgrade to?

I want to improve flow from display to rear chambers and through rear chambers. Stock pump is pretty wimpy.

What flowrate should I look to add? Already got 5000l/h in the display so a bit worried i'll be adding too much?
