I have been having problems with me leathers for some time now. Too much to explain, but through a process of elimination it seems to be my lighting. I have a Nano plumbed to the same sump as my DT an when I put my leathers in this nano they open and recover within 24 hours under different lighting.
So here is the "stupid" question. How do you know when MH's are done. Do they just fuse like any other typical globe or do they go through a phase where they do damage to stuff first.
I have fairly new aquamedic 150w MH's, but I also have a single MH pendant that I bought from someone that I have no idea how old it is.
For those interest in the essay here is my thread

Hi guys, I am having a lighting problem. I have the Juwel 260 litre curved front tank. This comes with 2 lights. I have tried to add 2 more lights. I used the old lid as a template and added 2 x 39w strips(T5), a white and an accinct(poor spelling).
I bought a ballast and the lights from a reputable supplier. After a couple of weeks the ballast blew. Pop and fizz!
I went back and bought a new ballast. Only problem is, the light will stay switched on for a few minuites and then switch off. Any ideas guys? This was a few months ago. To be honest, I got so frustrated I didnt pay much attention to my tank since then. The tank is fine, but the frustration kind of tarnished the enjoyment of the tank. So, can anyone advise on what to do?
Anyone selling a second hand Seio 1100?

Hi Brain
Up and running for about 4 months. Progress pics.
Will try post pics.

Hi,
My tank has been up and running for about 4 months now. Every 2 weeks I do a 10% water change. It's about a 400l-500l tank - including water in sump. About a month back I started noticing black algae forming, and now it's in patches and making my tank look terrible - please see pics below. Bubbles have formed on the sand bed as well as on the live rock. My pump is a 2,000l/h pump, so the tank is being cycled +-6x an hour. I had initially run a protein skimmer, but as you can see most of the tank is a DIY effort - the DIY protein skimmer wasn't as successful, so I took it out. The bio-load is pretty low - 2 fish with hermit crab and cleaner shrimp. Do you think having a protein skimmer will solve this issue?
Many thanks.

Hi all
A quick introduction.
My name is DuRaan and I live in Jhb. As an ex diving instructor and underwater photographer I always had a love of all things underwater both sea and fresh water.
Having had freshwater tanks for many years my wife unbelieveably bought me a 28g Nano tank for my birthday last year Feb. Reading the threads in the newcomer section this was the first mistake the LFS made.
Relying heavily on the instructions of the LFS I got the tanks cycled and as I presume all newcomers do I put too much in too quickly. The net result was quite a few dead clownfish:(. Some due to water quality but others due to fighting. Mostly though due to my lack of understanding. Other things that died due to the same reasons. A giant clam:(. A long tentacle anemone.:(:( and a few other corals all sold happily by LFS without knowing what my setup is. At last my Nano and I now understand each other. I have only LR and a few fish. I know when to change the water and how to take care of what's inside . I have not had a death in the last 6 months. In one very close call I had to remove all the fish and rush them to the LFS to keep for 2 weeks while the tank sorted itself out. After that the most beautiful red algae started growing in the tank. Enough of that.
My exitement is due to a large tank I bought from MikeR on this site and will be installing over the next weeks
The tank is 1600x 600 x600 with sump and skimmer. I since added a phosphate reactor, kalkwasser stirrer, calcium reactor, and Aquatronica controller as well as a mixing station with 100l freshwater suplied by RO unit, 100l mixing drum with pump.
The freshwater auto top up a 25 l holding tank in the cabinet and the salt manually tops up a 50l holding tank in the cabinet .
The freshwater will top up to the sump and the salt will be used for water changes.
Other things I intend to get in the near future is an ozonizer and a water chiller.
My intention is to create the best possible conditions for my livestock. I never want to go through the trauma of seeing stuff die knowing it most likely came from the ocean to be killed in my tank.
I will post pics soon of how the new tank is coming as well a keeping a diary of whats happening with the set-up

Hi Guys,
I've had my 250 litre sump tank cycling for 2 weeks now.
I have about 10kg of live rock as well as a lot of crushed coral.
My question is this:
I have done a lot of reading subsequent to the purchase of the crushed coral.
Quite a few people are against crushed coral because it can lead to a big build -up
of nitrates.
They advocate Aragonite or fine sea sand.
What do I do, because I have spent the money on the crushed coral now & I
am not sure how I will replace it in the future if I have to??
Appreciate your advice!
-
This is my bleached nemmie, I believe a crispa, it is showing great signs of improvement, the tenticles are getting fatter, there is small shades of colour coming in, it is getting sticky and definatly much better than when I bought it.
It only eats krill, being fed once every second day, everything else it regurgitates.
My problem though is it's foot does not sit or hold onto anything, it does not walk, I have been having to prop it up with rocks, but eventually it lies down, or drifts out with currents. I have tried various flow, light positions etc, but nothing takes effect. This pic is how I found it yesterday after coming from work, I am beggining to think it is supposed to drift in the open sea. It will not bond or grasp or hold onto anything, it does not support itself.
Please help.

hey hey!
well, my tank is up and running.. pics coming soon.
but when ever i touch the water, i get nailed! im sure its from my skimmer! my lion seems to be doing okay, but im scared it will kill any inverts i decide to put in at a later stage.
what do i do???

Hi all, I'm trying to figure out why my pod population in my dsb fluctuates so wildly - one moment it's teeming, the next, empty, and with no predation in there that i know of. What I'm suspecting is that i may have redox issues, my chaeto and algae scrubber is growing mad because i over feed so much. With so much algae, is it possible that my oxygen level is dropping to levels that kill off the pods ?

Guys still playing around with the idea of moving some of my engine room outside (Ok the scrubber wont work :P). Now my following thought
We manufacture 10 mm plastic panels (food grade HDPE) 500 x 500 mm, I am thinking of building a sealed / enclosed container from this 1 mtr sqr x 500 h which will be fed from my DT via overflow.
Water will then be returned to my current sump via gravity
As for temp fluctuations I was thinking of enclosing it in polystyrene / space blanket (thanx Jaco)
The distance the water would have to travel in the pipes outside the house would be about 300 mm
Any thoughts ?

Nano (450 DT) gravity fed Algae Turf Scrubber
Ok here goes, firstly my thanks and appreciation goes out to Mudshark, Sweetnsour and Kayman. Much, no all of my info provided in this tread is as a direct result of communication between them and me.
I am sure that this ATS can be used on much larger tanks, so not only for Nano owners.
I am planning to run the flow from DT up to scrubber (ATS will be mounted on wall above DT) using either a 800 or 1200 lp/h Resun King 1 or 2 (not sure which is best) and then down the screen and let the return flow be gravity driven via 2 drainage tubes, in case one gets blocked. To date I have only purchased a 100l black plastic drum/container (+/- 550mm( L) X 300mm(W) X 400mm(H)) from local hardware supplier together with the light timer (will be on for 5 hours and off for 1, thus 4 cycles a day, thanks Mudshark). And if I do, and yes I will probably forget to thank someone for an idea they gave me and now I am planning to use in this thread I do apologies in advance. All I know is that without your input, past and in the future this project will end up on the tips.
And now to the Questions.
1. Which pump, 1000 or 1200 lp/h Resun King 1 or 2 power head or Resun submersible pump has been recommended?
2. How to avoid noise, dont want to listen to gurgling water or a noisy pump, the DT is in my room at the moment and is very silent apart from bit of noise the skimmer makes when its doing its thang.
3. The plumbing???, not a DIY kind of guy, so need lots of advice here. Will I need a Durso(s) pipe(s) for the drainage from the ATS, planning to have 2 drainage pipes in case one gets blocked. Anybody who knows what exactly is required for the plumbing please assist. Will use blue plumber tubing 20mm and will probably need about 10 m?
4. Screen, will probably need about 0.5m squared? How do I go about angling the screen inwards from the top of the ATS towards the bottom to ensure the flow runs down the screen and does not just drip from the pipes?
5. Will use 2 computer fans to extract heat generated by the 4 energy saver lights, any suggestions on make, power etc, of the computer fans ?
6. Will also purchase 12V AC/DC power adapter for the fans.
7. Lighting will use 4000? or 6500? or 7000? kelvin energy saving globes. Going to use 4 of these.
8. 4 X ceramic globe fittings.
9. Other miscellaneous items include, 1 X plug for lights, black electric cable for lights and fans, +/- 10 meters, plastic screws +/- 50 of them, cable ties +/- 50 of them and a roll of black insulation tape. Any miscellaneous items I have missed out on?
10. The Nano I have comes with a fixed lid, dont want to drill the tank or have an overflow but need a plan on how to get the plumbing in and out of the tank without too much effort. Any suggestions?
11. How many holes in the outlet pipes that spray onto the screen and how far apart?
Any and all input is appreciated. Now I must take over the world.

Anybody have ideas for a CUC in a trigger only tank ?

can't for the life of me find out what this is... there are literally hundreds of them floating around, and at times i see them swimming, with little pulses like a jellyfish but really quickly...:wtf:

Was wondering if anyone agreed or had heard of this school of thought about white spot.
White spot can be induced by PH changes?
A fellow reefer told me that PH changes more specifically drastic ones can induce white spot, which made sense for me when i had a dramatic Ph change in my old tank about 2 years ago. My tangs specifically took strain. I know this could add to stress which is also a factor but he explained the following:
He also explained that the VA Waterfront Aquarium experienced this problem with their new snoek as well, which all died from WS.
His reasoning was that some fish, specifically Acanthurus...Powder tangs and Achilles have weak or thin slime layers much like a snoek. These slime layers protect the fish from parasites and disease... forms part of their immune system.
Changes in PH as well as other water conditions can damage this slime layer to the extent that the fish is more susceptible to WS.
Handeling the fish could also damage this layer.
He added that WS is much like air born disease and always present in our tank water. Stronger and weaker strains exists and its just up to our fish's immune system to combat WS. Once the fish lives through a bout of WS it may be immune to that strain.
I'm not stating the above.. only querying?:)
Can anyone share some light?

Can anyone PM me price on skimmer that can do +/- 800lt new or s/h.

I've seen pics of Adriaan's and Bob the reef builder's, set-up....and I'm very tempted to do same and knock some roof tiles out the way.
Please share experiences and info on perhaps what one should/should not do?

Heloo to all
This morning i noticed white spot on my powder blue tang. :( Must have been a bit stressed since Sunday when we put them into the tank. There is about 2-3 spots that you can see. My yellow tang is also behaving different, rubbing against the LR and breathing faster than normal. Can't see any white spot on him though. maybe has the itch. Is itch the same as white spot?
I have read about different treatments but i think i'll go the natural route and let nature goes its way. I don't want to try any medicines and catching it now for quarantine is out of the question. there is to many hiding spaces between the LR and trying to catch it will stress it even more.
have read that one can take up the temp to 28C. What effect will this have on the other fish and shrooms and will this help in anyway?
I have switched of the lights completely so that they can calm down.

i wanted to find out if one could use rain water for topping up? if anyone can maybe give some advice if its good or bad...or if rain water could be harmfull to your system.

Hi guys , could any of the networking gurus assist (jacques ?????).
Got two new laptops for the factory / site guys and wanted them added to the network yesterday but here's the issue:
"server pc has an I-burst desktop modem connected via router on the Wan port (not directly via USB). The network & workgroup is set up on "server" & laptops. ICS is enabled on server side. Everybody can see everybody.
Server is able to connect to the net but not the laptops....any ideas. All Pc's have roaming IP's . Unlike the netgear routers one is not able to assign a specific IP range to the modem

All fellow MASA reefers,
Let’s share the world in praying the Philippines, specially for our Filipino friends who suffered massive devastation this last weekend. Hundreds are died due to enormous flooding by typhoon ondoy (International name KETSANA).
My sincere condolences to all the filipino families who lost their love ones.
GOD Bless you all.

Hi All. I found this brilliant book yesterday at exclusive books called "Coral Reef Fishes" by Ewald Lieske and Robert Myers.
It's more a reference book featuring more than 2500 pics of reef fish, some that I have never seen in my life highlighting the slight variations between species, juvenile and adult forms and colouration and male and female differences. The nice thing is despite the amount of info in the book it's very compact and slightly smaller than an A5 page. It was also reasonably priced at R300-00. There's a link below from Amazon if you guys want to look at it.

I was thinking of my new build today and I decided that I would like to give you guys a glimpse into my life and the system that I have been dreaming about sins I was 16.
Hel that’s a long time to dream.
The slow economy retarded it for some time and I’m still not in a position to go full throttle.
So this thread will probably take some time to finish, hopefully before the end of next Xmas.
I will try to give you weekly updates of all the growing pains and what not’s of building ones dream tank.
Thank for all the support and help I always get from you guys, always nice to have a kind word every now and then.
Hope you enjoy the ride; think it’s going to be hectic!!!
And one last big thanks to Lanzo and Adriaan for their support and having all the patients in handling and exited new builder.

I'm looking for a Bilge pump. That I can use when the power goes out.
But it must be max 1.5 amp. 13.6VDC, and 500GPH or 1890L/h.
I can get from boat shops a 3.5amp, and also 1890L/h, but these will drain the batteries that I want to use to fast.

What is the most effective way to run your chiller?
Currently I am running it to and from my last return stage in the sump. I think now that this is not the most effective, cause as it switches on, and chills the last stage, in a minute all that cold water has gone to the DT, and the warm water is back in and the chiller starts up again, basically it stop starts the whole time.
I did try run it the same as a return, but had too much flow over the DSB, I am thinking now of switching of the standered return pump, and rather running my return through the chiller.

After adding yet another scratch to my viewing pane I think the time has come to replace it. I'm looking at starfire glass for this but yoh, it's anything but affordable. Is it all it's made out to be, does it scratch as easily as normal glass and do scratches show up as prominently ?
-
so i have a nano and my idee is too have a central island and then soft corals and maybe an lps on this island but no nano is fun without life so what fish would be best for this tank.
i love lionfish, im particulary fond of longnosed hawkfish but according to my research those are big no no's.
my tank has about 10 gallons of swimming space.
So i decided to have a competiotion. everyone nominates their fave fish that will fit in this tank threafter ill make an poll of the most wanted fish and the winning choice is the fish ill eventually get for this nano.
BTW NO CLOWNFISH ALLOWED UNLESS ITS AN FIRE CLOWN

Hello Guys...
I am a new bee. Basically I would like to have reef tank. So I wanted to go with FO, FOWLR and then my dream RT
I setup 450 liters (5lx2hx1.5w) Marin tank. I have added dead 3" DSB and some dead rocks and coral, which I presum dead rock may become live after some 5-6 months..
I mixed my water (tap water- filtered) with Red sea salt with salinity 1.022 and PH with 8.0. Its almost a week since the cycling process started.
And also, I have 4ft Sump (Old fresh water system converted into system-sump). I made four partitions.
1st partition 12"inch (Water (main tank to sump). Filled with Flos, bio balls again flos and cyramic rings.
2nd partition 15"inch. placed Protiem skimmer
3rd partition 12inh. Added some coral reef sand..say 3inch
4th Partition. 6 inch. Power head (pumps water to main tank).
Now...
After adding salt I noticed there are some small particles (white) shown in the main tank.
While I was observing, I noticed that they are appearing after I switch on my protien skimmer, else wise if I swtich off the protien skimmer they are slowly disappearing after 2-3 hours.
I have also added some white floss in the the 4th partition just to break the air bubbles, in case they are but nevertheless they are not air bubbles.
I just wondering how to get rid of this small particles.:(
Do I need to change anything in the sump or do I need to place the Protien skimmer in the first partition.
Please find the images in the doc file and advise me.
I am online...
Thanks in advance.
Cheers.

i'm sure i'm not the only one who is tired of there cleaner schrimp babies being chomped by the other fish. so i plan to try and breed with them, so here is what i have done so far: i have built a fuge and am now able to separate the fry from the fish before they are released into the tank, by simply moving the mommy/daddy schrimp into the fuge. my question now is , do i have to remove the parent from the tank after the eggs are released? would they eat there own ? what else can i feed them other than gut loaded(what can i gut load with) rotifer or brine? any other sugestions i may not have thought of would also be appreciated

hi guys, wanting to get some macro algae to grow in my dsb chamber in the Durban area, can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks
-
I bought some live rock at a LFS today, and noticed some dead fish in their tanks.I asked the sales person what kind of filter are they using and he showed me a huge container staged with bioballs.I also noticed that they do have two or three skimmers on their tank, but they are not working at all.I couldn't even see some foam inside the skimmers.
I tested their water for nitrate and this is what was inside.

Hi all
Decided to post my new project on MASA. Should have done it earlier but here it goes.
I started with the planning of my new reef aquarium about 6 months ago. Reason... bigger is better and much cooler. Friends affectionately refer to my hobby, its addiction and expense, as a cocaine habit. I disagree. I think cocaine, although seriously damaging, is much cheaper.
My original aquarium was a 1.5m/ +/- 700L system primarily consisting of Softies, LPS, many inverts and a few fish. The system was great however the design, pariculary the sump was flawed. There were also many things that i had noted over the years that wanted to change or improve on. I thus removed the old tank and have stored my live stock at my LFS, which was kind enough to baby sit them for me. I never realized the new system would take this long to plumb and get running!
The new system will primarily be a Softies and LPS reef tank. It is also bigger and is designed as a peninsula style tank acting as a room divider in my apartment. The peninsula design has its complexities, one being, there is a very limited area to hide unsightly equipment, pipes and cables.
New system
Display: 2m(l) x 0.8m(w) x 0.75m(h)
Glass 12mm, Base 15mm (1200L)
Sump: 1.5m(l) x 0.5m(w) x 0.45m(h)
Glass 10mm (340L)
Skimmer: Reef Octopus Bubble Blaster EXT
Kalkstirer & top-up: Aquamedic K1000 and top-up
Phosphate remover : Reef Octopus using Aquamedic anti phos
Closed loop pumps: 2 x RO Water Blasters 7000L/h
Display Waterflow: 2 x Vortech 14000L/h
Return: 1 x RO Water Blaster 7000L/h
Lighting: 2 x 250W MH pendants, BLV 14000K bulbs
(Display) 8 x 34W Silvania T5s (6 blue, 2 white)
(Sump) 2 x 34W Silvania T5s
Unique to the system
Closed Loop
The close loop is designed so that its inlet and returns exit and enter through the base of the tank. I got the idea from a seriously impressive reef tank that featured on Reef Central, namely Paul Witbys TOTM October 2007. The idea suited me as firstly, it result in detritus remaining in suspension in the water column for longer and added varied flow. Secondly it was also unnoticeable, returning through the base of the tank and out underneath the live rock. This was favourable considering my peninsula headaches. Other than the Vortechs, which are relatively inconspicuous, there would be no other equipment visible in the display.
The design is risky as I understand however I am still keen to make it work. J
Sump design
The sump design is pretty standard. Water from the overflow is split btw the sump and the skimmer. The skimmer, because of accessibility issues, is located at the end of the sump. The skimmer outflow is then plumbed back to the beginning of the sump.
The feed into the sump from the portion not skimmed is
The 1st compartment houses live rock.
The 2nd houses Chaetomorpha algae. The flow over the glass to the second compartment is designed in a way the the flow will hopefully spin the algae in the water, thus preventing dead spots.
The 3rd is relatively large and consists of a DSB, which is raised. It will also act as a frag section for some of softies and LPS. I have battled for a while now and have eventually managed to get the pace and volume of water flow over the DSB just right.
The last compartment of the sump will house my return pumps as well as the phosphate and carbon reactor pumps.
I only chose to post some the progress now, as only now does it seem like everything is coming together. Hopefully the tank will be up and running with salt water in the next week.
The tank and all the plumbing was put together by my LFS which has been extremely helpful!

Hey everyone,
Just thought I would share how my frag tanks are progressing.
Just a few coral growth pictures:

Hi guys, was surfing e-bay and looked at marine aquarium hardware...prices are excellent compared to buying local (no offence to the sponsors)
Is anybody getting their stuff from e-bay and if so any pro's or cons

Just heard the most stupid comment on DSTV Weather:
Shark attacks are at a all time low. "experts " think its because of the global recession
....yeh right;)...I thought its because we were killing 30 mil a year

Hi
I am from MASA's sister site TASA. I have a chip on the front pane of glass on my tank and i would like to know if there is anybody that could tell me how to fix it or even if it can be fixed? The tank is 2.5m by 600mm by 600mm.
I tried to upload a photo but it doesnt want to work.
All help will be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards
Steve:)

Hi Guys
I've got a TC-515 temp controller that I'm trying to setup, I've managed to download a manual but doesn't quite match up, think mine might be a bit older?
Its got 2 relay output, 1 for "control" and 1 for "alarm"
Its got so many settings you need a pilots licence to opperate.:(
What I want is get it to turn chiller on at say 25.7 and heater on at 25.3. I've got the chiller function working, just by setting the "set" temp to to 25.5 with a hysteresis to 0.2.
But what "mode" on the alarm side do select to get it to work the heater?

Hi i have two yellows i'm thinking of selling. They had to move out of the tank quickly due to a leak and now i'm thinkin of avoiding the re-stress of having to put them back together and let them fight for dominance again. The sizes are large/medium(aka good size) and a small(maybe half the size of the other). They are in beautiful health and eating properly.
Would like a possible swap on a healthy purple tang or cash. Please only decent offers

Guys just want to know. Goldies are They reef friendly? and cane some one give me some examples on some big fish that I CAN get to put in my reef except tangs?:thumbup1:

Hey everyone,
Just thought I would post some pics of my latest coral addition. It's blue xenia, a nice big piece. Here are the pics right after putting it in my tank:

Hey guys.
i need MAJOR help with my skimmer.. i have lost the "neck" and "cup".. so iv taken my berlin airlifter apart.. and trying to use it in the mean time.. will this help?
So my questions are:
*how long does it take for the bubbles to over flow
* Will this actually work?
*DOES anyone have a broked TS1? i'll take the cup off your hands
Pictures:
The skimmmer has been running for like 2min when i took this pics
-
Well, I now have 2.8kg of live rock (kenyan) which went in the tank this morning. So far, the tank has been running for 1 full day, with the skimmer & filter going the whole time.
Here are some preliminary pics of the tank with the Live Rock inside...
And of each individual piece...
This is my favourite piece...
I'm busy making a framework out of plastic mesh, so that there can be a bit more surface area for things to happen.
Anyway - Stupid question time.
When can i expect to start seeing some algal growth in the tank? I've heard reports from 2 days all the way to 2 weeks...
-
anybodt know were i can get waterproof t5 endcaps in cape town and possibly the price too

HI all
I have 1 sun sun 3000lph pump and that pump is noisy compared to the 2 Seio M1500's that i had. its so loud that i can hear it all over the lounge. Is this normal or could it be possible that i have a bad 1 as i am intending to get 2 5000lph ones and would rather not buy them if thats the case
-
I've seen this on another forum I belong to and it is really funny. (It will also keep Warren and Chicka to post all their funnies in one thread....)
Find the funniest pic you have, anything from your own stock, the web, whatever, and post it here.
The mods can vote after 01week- maybe the competition closing date must be on the 03rd of October, and the winner with the funniest pic shall win R500.00.

Hi,
Selling everything up unfortunately. I have worked out new value on all the gear at R22 000.00 but am looking for only R13K. This includes the tank/sump/heaters/corals etc (But I can make a plan with livestock if it puts you off)
Stuff includes RO unit (Waterboy Reefmaster), 2x 150 DE MH, 4x39W T5, Tunze 9010 Skimmer, Osmolater and CO2 System (the controller with probes and everything). Seio controller and 2 M1100's, 2x M820's Rio pump, TDS meter, refractometer etc.
I have an Excel spreadsheet with a breakdown if you're keen
Thanks

Well, the first pics are here. Sorry for the quality - the other half has commandeered the SLR for the evening, so I'm relegated to the poxy little camera on my phone...
Here's the tank when lit...
The Wet/dry filter, courtesy of Eheim
With the lid off - power head in the top left (left rear side of tank), Hang-on Red Sea protien skimmer in the middle, wet/dry piping next to it, with the pick-up pipe coming down the centre, and my jimmied outlet pipe, snaking around to the RHS of the tank in order to give a R to L flow of water, as opposed to the L to R of the power head.
Light-shot...
More shots to come when live rock has been put in, and then at each stage of the Algae growth cycles.
If anyone has any pointers at this stage, let them come!
I'm keeping the lights off for the first 4 or so days (as per the reference material I've looked at) and then am going to switch them on at gradually increasing intervals, until they're running for the full 8 to 10 hours a day...
-
i haven't seen any post , about it .
i used iron straw to remove po4 from my tank , i was putting it in a stoking , (a handful) .for 2/3 days ,longer it release rust , the po4 precipitated in the stocking and you just trow it away , i was doing so once now en then , when i though it was needed
be careful in french it's paille de fer , iron straw not steel wool .
make sure it's plain iron ,no soap or other additive in it i don't know if the composition it's the same in your country .
TRY IT IN A BUCKET BEFORE , I WOULDN'T LIKE TO FEEL RESPONSIBLE IN CASE OF PROBLEMS !!
-
Well, here I am...
Got a 120l tank, filled it up today (thanks Muizenberg beach) and am getting the live rock tomorrow. The tank is now full of sea water, and has an layer of white aragonite on the bottom.
Filtration is through a Red Sea skimmer (400lph) and Eheim wet/dry filter with a small power head in the tank. The filter's outlet pipe is connected to a side-mounted pipe, with about 8 holes drilled into it - that provides the counter-flow to the power head, which is located on the opposite side to the outlet pipe.
I plan on running the Berlin (natural) system, and am looking at getting just 2kg of rock to begin with, adding more as the months go on. I expect to add a hardy fish or 2 a couple of months down the line...
And if this tank works out, there's a 240l tank waiting in the wings...
-
What are in these 2 photos?
Should I remove it from my tank?
-
hey guys, so the move went well. finally settled in. only lost a peppermint shrimp, R.I.P. little guy. ive redone my scaping and changed the flow around abit. will post pics as soon as i figure out how to...

Hi to all the Members,
I am a share holder in a CTFM restaurant and we have two 2m x 1m x1m marine aquariums stocked with fish only. I have decided to get involved in the maintenance of the fish tanks (which is presently done by a private company).
To start with, I would like to aquire a few books on Marine Aquariums. Any suggestions? The next step would be to get the salt water mix right. Suggestions on products? Is it necessary to use reverse osmosis water or can SA tapwater be used and if so how is it treated?
Please bear with me. I pressume that most of the answers can be found in previous threads. In time I will work through the threads.

hi guys, I am thinking of plumbing my Polario into a CLS , I have heard the pump can then be mounted outside.
Has anyone tried this or know how to do this
-
Hey there Guys I trust everyone had a awesome Braai Day yesterday.
bought some liverock and got a few little critters coming off or out of there.
there was so kind of soft and hard corals, also found what i think could be a very little tube type Anemone , a whole lot of little feather dusters in different colors
the scary things i found is two black crabs one hairy crab( and not the STD type )
i tossed all of them in the sump. then there is this worm about + - 10cm flat and brown that been alluding me. wana know if its going to a Nuisance in the tank or beneficial ( doesnt look like a bristle worm)

Hi Guys
Well here I come wiht the dumb questions....
The husband and I are having a disagreement about which side the protein skimmer goes of the system so some help woudl be greatly apprecaited...
When the flow of water leaves the tank shoudl it go directly into the skimmer or not? shoudl the skimmer be at the end of the filtration cycle.
Please could someone let me have a standard simple picture of the setup as I am really struggling to get my head around it.. call me blonde for now?
Thanks so much.

Hi Guys
Having a couple problems lately and wondering if any of you could perhaps shed some light......
Running XP
Problem 1 : When selecting to show hidden files it just doesn't stick, you select it, click OK, and it still doesn't show them, if you go back to the option, it shows "don't show...." This was fixed by "repairing" windows using the XP disc.
Problem 2 : When double clicking on "C:" in my computer it come up with the "open with" selection and not just into the exploring folder....... ? WTF. Not fixed with the repair.....

Hi all. I put up my new tank up 4 weeks ago. I have about 13kg of live rock in tank. Im using a Berlin airlift skimmer and a 1000l/hour canester filter. I interedused my first live stock after 2 weeks. 1 week later i bought another 3 fishes. All 3 of them died about 5 days later. Then i started to look for fault i relised that the skimmer does not work like it should. Can that be the cause of death and if so what is the signs to look out for.

This is the second collecting trip for aandtsociety show stock.
Just another trip to get some nice fish and inverts for the beenliegh show tanks on one of the calmest days imaginable and in the strongest current.
The current this day was extrmemly dangerous and had to be handled with a lot of care or end up in New zealand and there are no jesus lines that long!
This is how calm it was.

A nice little halichoeres chrysus.

A shy little dark cardinal.

we don't normally bother with moorish idles, but this one will be handy for the show and while Mark looked after it he has gotten attached to it.
This one was gotten from a discusting area and there are no corals or much of anything else there really, they are tougher that way and this one eats out of his hand in just few days in the tank.

This is the avergae colour of the melanopus clowns around here, its a nice nature so far,not normal for these fish, lives well with the latz, akyndinos and skunk.

These wil look great in the tanks. Now mark wants more, the colours will be mixed up in the next ones.

There were lots of blue tangs and a couple of latz, but we have some so we didn't bother.

Hi guys so I'm thinking of adding an Algae turf scrubber to my boyu TL450 and would like some ideas
My stand has a small cabinet below that may work to house the ATS should I build a small tank to fit in it.
My question is will running 2 power heads work? One to siphon water from the compartments at the back and push the water up to the scrubber and another to push water back from the tank at the bottom back up to the tank?
I will add pc fans in the cabinet to pull air in at the bottom and another two to pull air out of the cabinet, the bulb will be a normal energy saver but only on the one side as space is quite limited.
Any and all suggestions welcome
-
hi Im getting my Boyu 550 tomorrow + live rock
It is my 2nd marine tank (first one is about 250l)
Can anyone plz explain to me what I should do to make the filter more effective, I have heard that I should chuck all the stuff I get with away... then what should I put back there.:001_huh:
I am also looking for Live Sand (CaribSea) Anyone know where I can get this ASAP in Pretoria. :022:
Thanks:bouncy-blue:

About a month ago I visited Idol Marine to discuss my future tank with the “specialists”. At that stage the large display tank was still under construction. The next Friday I was back, just in time to see the wave tank working after the sand was added, and that was it!!!:slayer: I fall in love with the tank and decided that my tank should look like this.
I have the privilege to be the first customer who’s tank is based on the same principal as the one at Idol Marine with the build-in wavebox and C2C overflow on the same side of the tank.
My tank’s size will be 1200mm x 1500mm x 700mm, its not 100% a cube, but if you take the space for the overflow and the wavebox into account, it’s as close to a cube as “Cape town” to “Kaapstad”. It will be a rimless tank with a maximum display of 3 sides. 3 Tunze pumps inside, two for flow and the third for the wavebox. All three will be controled by a ProfiLux.
The plan is to start with fish (only next year 2010) and then at a later stage, once the tank is more mature to add corals.
That’s first enough, let me try to upload some pic’s!!!
The glass, 24mm starfire glass, oh my goodness they are heavy!!!!
This is only the four sides. You will notice that the glass on the righthand side are more darker that the one's on the lefthand-side. One of the panels is normal glass that will be used for the back of the tank.
See the diffirence in color between Starfire glass and normal glass. You cannot see the bottom of the 700mm of the normal glass if you look down. With the Starefire you can actually see the bottom.
....and the stand, specially enforced in the corners to support the movement of the waves .
...the first two sides in place
heave stufff!!!!!!
and then the last side....
....this is now where experience is handy......look at the concentration!!;)
getting shape.........
Just to give you an indication of the size
....and the location. The tank will be moved towards the window once all the major work are done.
...and thats it, for phase one!
We are waiting for the silicon to dry and in two days time the base will be added.
Thanks Adriaan!!!

Hi all
I am Hannes and a new member of MASA.
I do have a freshwater tank, running for a year now (450l Jewel tank).........but at last, a deam is comming true!!! I gonna have my first marine tank!!!:slayer::razz::thumbup:
I will start a new thread under the "Supersized tanks"

hi guys.
i have read that aptasia can be killed by removing the problem rock and putting it directly into a salt water mix of 1.010
the sudden change in pressure causes them to die
has anyone ever tried this? and did it work??
how long would you have to keep the rocks in the water for? 2 weeks? more? less?
-
Hey man.. what caan i say. i am STOKED to be getting my first marine tank tomorrow!
Its custom build with 10mm glass. my guess is that its about 90cm x 45 x 60h
coming with a stand, sump, t5's etc etc! around 8-10kg of Malaysian rock and two banded clowns
i got NO clue what i am putting in there, so PLEASE help me with choosing some rad fish. on the list must be a flame angel! down the line i would like to add corals (Chilli coral, open brain and Monti's) how soon can i add them? the tank is a well established tank, just going to move it a few km.. oh and a nennie once im more established and further down the line even a mandarin
thanks guys!

How to survive a shark attack
1: Don't swim in the ocean.
Ninety-nine percent of all shark attacks take place in exceptionally large bodies of water also known as oceans. The way to determine if you are currently in an ocean is to taste the water, which should be salty.
2: Listen out for the music.
In the event that you are foolish enough to swim in an ocean, listen carefully for the music, as demonstrated in the marvelous documentary film Jaws. All shark attacks are preceded by the "daah-da, daah-da" chords, which will gradually become more rapid as the shark gets closer. This is due to the Doppler Effect.
3: Swim with fat people.
Try to surround yourself with more appetizing companions. If you know them well, you might even try to switch their suntan lotion with A-1 Steak Sauce. This will definitely improve your odds.
4: Don't go into the water without a knife.
This is not to defend yourself but to stab the person (a.k.a the decoy) closest to you in the case of a shark attack. Once you are sure the "decoy" is bleeding profusely.....swim for your freekin life.
And finaly.....
5: Don't panic.
In the event that a shark actually bites you, try to remain calm. This really won't help you survive, but everyone else on the beach will appreciate you not shrieking madly, as this is quite unsettling
Hope this helps.

Hi all. Seeing as this is a relatively new product to SA, there are going to be a lot of guys out there wanting to use the system to reduce their nutrients. The product is brilliant but extremely dangerous to those seeking a quick fix to their nutrient problems.
I want to start a thread where guys can discuss the pro's and cons of this method of nutrient reduction, what should and shouldn't be used, how fast the system should be implemented and the corerct way of using the zeolite based system.
Here for starters is the neozeo method download from brightwell aquatics.

Hi all, well I've been around for a while already so I guess it's time to show and tell my tank.
It's been up since March 2009, and went through an extended cycle - mostly due to incorrect readings from my test kits .... Lesson learnt, when you buy cheap, you get what you pay for .....
But using decent kits, and after feeding heavily ....
Amm - 0
Nitrate - 0
Nitrite - 0
pH - 8.2
Sal - 1024
phos - 0 (but it's there, lots of it too ....)
So far livestock is a mandarin, a breeding pair of clowns, a cleaner wrasse, and a blue starfish

Hi Guys,
Bit of a Newbie to this whole game... I got my BOYU TL 550 about 2 weeks ago and was wondering if there is a way to do the following:
- Split up the white light from the blue lights so that I can run the white light from 09:00 to 17:00 and the blue light can run from 08:00 to say 18:00 and then switch over to the LED's for Night light?
- Would the above not give a better transition between lighting, i.e. not such a harsh change?
- I would like to put all 3 on timers so that I have a constant routine in terms of lighting, is it possible to modify the configuration to cater for this?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks :)

Hi all,
I am a complete newby to this great hobbie and I am cuurently just researching in order to know exactly what to do when I do start actually putting water in a tank!
I am a lover of the sea and of anything living in it...I spend any time I can in Mosam and much of that time either in, under or on the water!
The main reason why I am currently just researching is because I know that I will be moving houses next year and very possibly at the end of next year again as I am just starting a new job and getting settled in Johannesburg. (some advice on moving tanks will obviously be needed....if it is even possible!)
I need some help on stores, clubs, people who would be willing and able to assist me with gathering info and even sourcing equipment and fish etc. in and around Johannesburg. So any advice there will be appreciated.
I'm glad I found this site as it seems that this is where I will get some valuable info.
Happy days!!

Hi everyone,
I've just finished making my own 300l marine tank with most items home made - tank, biological filter, sump, DSB, overflow, but haven't as yet made my protein skimmer. I've tried making a protein skimmer, but failed as it leaked :(, so eager to try it again, but I need more info as to where I could get marine goop (or the like) in Johannesburg.
Anyway, looking forward to learning loads here.
-
Do anyone have this skimmer, and is it a good skimmer?
I order this skimmer. Water volume is about 650L and it is rated for 1200L.:slayer:

Hi guys was pondering this while looking at my tank. If we vacuum our sand in the DT to get rid of detritus, aren't we also removing beneficial organisms

Well seeing that the Rand has strengthen from +- R10 to +- R7.40 and will probably go as low as R7, leads me to the following questions to all marine suppliers.(This from Jan2009 to now.)
Will we see the prices of equipment/livestock drop or not? I really have not noticed any drop in prices of equipment or livestock yet?
Is this because most suppliers are sitting with old stock from the beginning of the year. Or do the suppliers use this as a way to increase their margins? Seeing that we are already now used to the higher prices.
Could some of our sponsors please enlighten me?

Hi can anyone ID this for me? Found it in a rockpool at Garvies on the Bluff. Sorry I know I posted the pic on another thread, but it was in the wrong place I think!
He is in my sump at the moment, I brought him home without knowing what he was, probably a bit stupid I know! My research indicates he might be a flatworm but I can't find out if he is safe or not. He's really pretty though :)
Cheers

A few months ago I discovered white hairy sponges on on of my LR. Had a cluster of 9 on 1 rock. Didn't know what it was and posted a pic of it for the guru's to id. I was told that they are filterfeeders and a sign of good water quality. I was happy & releaved at the same time 'cos I was hearing (and reading) a lot about neusance growth in tanks. They don't get big, so I was told to enjoy them whilest I can 'cos as soon as I put in corals / nennies, I will forget about them...
My question now: Can they become a pest? It's been about 4 months after I discovered them and I'm scared... again... I think they taking over. If they find space away from my urchin, they will multiply to a point of a "white carpet"... so to speak... Behind my powerheads, on the outside of powerheads (including the little edges on the powerhead where sections meet), inside my sump, inside my boxfilter... My LR is covered by them (okay, not all my LR - The LR that I got with the system is dead. Understandable if my salinity was 1043 the day I took it over from a kid who didn't know how to take care of fish)

:happybday: guys - have a great day :mbounce:and may your'll see many many more:party:

What is the absolute minimum that needs to run when the power goes out? Do I need 3KW genie or big inverter to run the tank? On average I had power outages that last around 4 hours. The max we had was 6.
Is lights needed? Do get dark and stormy days out at sea. So I doubt if lights are that needed for that 4 hours, just open the curtains...When power do come on later maybe run the lights an hour or two later that day. Something wrong with this approach?
Heaters? How much can the temp drop in 4 hours?
Scrubber could be a problem, but just disconnect it and let it lie in the sump to prevent it drying out. I mean the algae are used to some periods of darkness anyway.
30 to 50 times water movement in the tank? Is that really needed? Or can tank and fish relax for 4 hours of calm seas?
DSB, yes there is an problem, that needs some movement. Will 50% of normal flow kill all life forms within the DSB?
Water movement in display for oxygen uptake. Well if battery driven air pump can solve this... why have strong flows for this period?
Skimmer? I do not know? Will the pollutants build up that mush if my skimmer is out of action for 4 hours?
Or do you need just some circulation between sump to display tank. Like a battery driven bilge pump?
Or did I answer myself?

Hey Guys
Figured since most of you sit here refreshing every day I'd let you know
AfriHost has dropped it's prices to R29/GB for ADSL accounts. Just signed up now, 5GB/month account for only R145! (I was using prepaid at R70/GB but figured that's so much cheaper if I waste a little it doesn't really matter)

Afrihost’s 1 GB data bundle now costs R 29.00 per month while the company’s 2 GB, 3 GB and 5 GB ADSL data bundle pricing has been reduced to R 58, R 87 and R 145 respectively. Data top-ups have fallen to R29 per GB and their prepaid data lowered to R49 per GB.
The ADSL bandwidth is provisioned over the Internet Solutions backbone and all accounts come standard with email accounts and webmail access. The accounts are month-to-month contracts with no long term lock-ins.
“With our new offer we wanted to make as BIG a splash as possible and give the most value to our clients - so after much debating and calculating we decided to go as low as we can go,” explains Afrihost CEO Gian Visser.
Afrihost made it clear that it is a limited offer aimed at early adopters. “Remember we can't guarantee that we will offer this R29.00 deal forever - but what we can guarantee you is that if you are quick enough and signup in time then your price of R29 per GB will be locked in for whatever package you bought,” Visser said.
Existing Afrihost ADSL clients may be happy to hear that their subscription price has also been changed to R 29.00 per GB.

Hi There
I have been a keen tropical aqurium keeper for more than ten years now, I think it is high time that I move on to a marine aqurium. The ocean has been a big part of my life as long as I can remember and my hobby's over the last twenty years reflect this so it will only make sense to bring the "Ocean" into my house.
I am planing to convert my 160Ltr tropical aqurium into a marine aquirium so I will need all the advice I can get from you.

Dont know if anyone is using this to try and stop smoking, but here's a bit of a warning :
Electronic cigarette smokers warned of chemical dangers
Smoke-free alternative contains carcinogens
By Rachel Shields
Sunday, 26 July 2009
Smokers using battery-powered electronic cigarettes to beat the smoking ban were warned yesterday that they are being exposed to poisonous and carcinogenic chemicals.
The e-cigarettes, which provide a smoke-free "high" by vaporising a liquid mix of nicotine, flavourings and other chemicals, were found by a scientific study to contain carcinogens and toxic chemicals such as diethylene glycol, which is found in anti-freeze.
While UK companies selling the cigarettes claim that they "contain none of the dangerous, carcinogenic toxins and chemicals that are found in standard cigarettes", the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which tested 19 varieties of electronic cigarette, warned that it was "concerned about the safety of these products and how they are marketed to the public". Despite the health fears surrounding e-cigarettes, their sale is not regulated by the Health Protection Agency or any other health body in the UK. A trading standards spokesperson said: "There is no specific regulation for electronic cigarettes, as they are not tobacco products. They are just subject to regular trading and safety laws as electrical products."
Concerns were first raised about the possible dangers of electronic cigarettes in the UK after a boom in sales linked to the introduction of the smoking ban in 2007. The FDA expressed concerns that e-cigarettes have not been submitted for evaluation or approval. While they are banned in some countries, such as Canada, e-cigarettes are available from a range of UK websites, with prices starting at about £39.99 for the cigarette, and nicotine cartridge refills available for less than £1 each. Some contain flavourings such as strawberry and caramel, which health campaigners fear may appeal to children.
"Electronic cigarettes are allowed on the marketplace without being subjected to the comprehensive testing required of medicinal products," said Deborah Arnott, director of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH). "We would recommend that anyone trying to quit should use medicinal nicotine products such as patches, gum or the inhalator, which have been tested and found to be both safe and effective, rather than electronic cigarettes."
However, anti-smoking campaigners argue that the risks posed by electronic cigarettes are still lower than those of ordinary cigarettes. "Cigarettes contain thousands of different chemicals, many of which are carcinogenic and are particularly dangerous when burnt, and kill half all long-term smokers," Ms Arnott said.

Hi guys, with my tank standing close to an external wall receiving sun for most of the day I had this "brainwave ;)"
I was thinking a long rectangular "tank" against the wall. Water from the sump will then be pumped to the top and tricle down the screen and return to the sump via gravity. No need for lighting then
Could this work ?

I'm sure that there are a few reefers out there that bought a nice sized bag of crushed coral when setting up there first marine tank but then soon came to realize that as a substrate it was an absolute detritus trap. I too an one of these poor sods with a bag of unwanted crushed coral in the store room.
My question is this. Would it not be possible to add the crushed coral to a cement mixture of sort to create one's own bio rock. Would this not fulfill the same purpose as Biorock but with the added benefit of help with the Alk and Ph buffering? And what cement would be reef safe?
Any thoughts?

Most people buy the required amount of LR, place in tank and let it cycle for 6 weeks.
say we need 100kilos in the tank,
is it not better to say start off with only 50kilos, let it cycle for 6-8 weeks, and then add 10 more kilos, for say a month, then another 10 kilos every 4 weeks till we got our 100 kilos in the tank.
I was thinking that we place it all in the tank, and how much dies in the intial cycles, which we could save if we placing in a semi established tank that has been trough all the initial cycles. Do we not loose too much beneficial bacteria in our live rock by placing it all at once, when we could save more bacteria by staggering it. I know it will take 6 months, but this is the game of reefkeeping, patience?

I have a damsel that I started with 9 months ago, prior he was in someone else tank for a year, prior to that in the wild. I was just thinking that he could be pretty old for a damsel, what is the average lifespan for livestock.
I would of thought shrimps would not be that long, fish maybe 3 years, how long have you had your oldist fish, and did you have it as a pup?

Trip one.
The weather was spot on,the vis was great, the current was as dangerous as you could possibly get!!
The ever (rare, lol ) wobby, damn things are like flies around here, flies that put holes in you.
This one was near the blue tangs and ate one before getting down to them again.
You can interact with a 16 foot tiger, fight off an 8 foot hammer head that wants your speared fish and lots of other shark encounters, but these carpet paterned nut cases, one out of ten are serious phychopaths, the things are everywhere and when they start on you they do not like to give in or scare off like you can with an actual man eater.
This is one creature that taking it to the brink of extinction would be such a loss?

Rather than get surgeons out of tanks, two more were collected for the show. Most are gone from commercial collection now from the massive amounts that were there, next year may bring in heaps,as usual!

A nice linkia for the show, there was one there cream in colour over a metre across,to big for the show, heaps of linkias out there!

Shane has got the yellow one at the moment. It will go well with this one at the show.

These apogon cyanosoma cardinals were for mark, but we will use them in the show and than he can have them.

Always a space for a bicuit star for the tanks.

Hi to All and thanks for the welcome, Mike.
I love butterfly fish. Tragically I lost my entire collection a few months ago when I introduced a swop-out from a friend in Still Bay.
Anyway - I love collecting: it's fun! I've been to Durban in July (Park Rainie and The Bluff). At Park Rainie - amongst all the many other fish - we have only spotted one!!! Butterfly (Ch. Lunula - not caught!). The next day we moved on to The Bluff: lots of Butterflies but impossible to catch (we were three) in the "holes" we found in the flat rock formations.
I would like to go to Durban again later this month. Can anybody direct me to suitable collecting spot/s (easy to reach - snorkeling, only able to spend 2 days, and guaranteed with Butterflies) ?
Thanks a lot.

Hello everybody
I have a problem with planning my sump for my tank. My glass can not be drilled and I don't precisely know how to make the sump then:whistling:... I know the water should preferably come from the top of the tank so I thaught of placing a pump there and a pipe and let it flow into the sump and then a pump at the end pumping it back. Any ideas about this or plans that I can find somewhere. Any other ideas welcome!
Thanx

Hi all
My husband and I have just started planning our very very first marine tank. We are so excited and have been reading all the links that I can find ont he website and everything else. we bought a book by Micheal Paletta and wow what an amazing book. it has everything from setup tips to fish behaviour etc etc.
We are looking at buying a secound hand tank from a friend that he has been keeping koi in for the post little while. The size of the tank is 1.5m X600 x600 that was originally designed to be a marine. I am wondering if there is any kind of negative risk from using a secound hand tank?
I am so excited and can't wait to start being able to run my tank and then the end goal of course in 6 months time to put in my little fishies! :)

Hi Hennie, I have come across a problem and need your advice and input please. I have a pretty commercial 1.2m x 0.5 x 0.5ish 6mm tank with side euro bracing and a horrible wide brace right in the middle of the length. I have recently upgraded to halide's and have my main 250w centrally mounted at about 100mm above water level. Right above the centre brace. This brings about two problems, obviously firstly i'm getting light loss from the glass and salt build up, which is a pain, but more critically i find that this brace gets REALLY hot, and i mean really hot, i'd guess it at the better part of 70-80 degrees. This is worrying me like mad because a few splashes of 25 degree water on it and it's history, then the tank says howzit. I have 6 x 75mm bracing ready made for the conversion to euro style. Now . . . I want to try do this conversion while the tank is full to avoid having to catch livestock and stress them out. My plan is to make an external brace with I beam and essentially clamp the tank along it's length to shape while i remove the centre brace and install the euro bracing. Do you have any critique and advice on doing this modification, I'm seriously nervous but it has to be done, at the moment i'm running my halide for an hour on then off for an hour just to mitigate the thermal risks . . . Thanks in advance, Stressed Mark . . .

Hi everyone - just thought to open thread with peoples professions so that in case we need advice on something (plumbing, electrical, medical etc...) so that we can pm a person that we regularly interact with on the forum seeking help without being embarresed on a public thread - OK doesnt guarantee an answer but seeing how much time we spend on the forum its easier to go to a thread - find someone in the game and ask for help - we dont need qualifications but if you have the know how and you can help out - why not? Think of it as a team building effort - Guys this is more advise that generally have nothing to do with our hobby but does affect the way of life - Ok here's mine - electronic security industry - alarms, intercoms, cctv.gate automation

As most of you keen DSLR photographers would know, a photo's depth of field (DOF) becomes severely limited as one gets closer to the subject being photographed, especially when doing macro photography. After acquiring my Canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens a few weeks ago, I came to realize just how limiting the DOF can be.
This morning, while Google-surfing, I stumbled on an absolutely brilliant technique called focus stacking. This basically entails taking a series of photos of the same image, keeping everything the same, except for the point of focus. By changing the point of focus from the closest point of the image to the furthest point of the image in a number of "slices", and then combining (stacking...) the "slices" using a
suitable program afterwards, one can end up having the whole macro image in focus.
Here are three photo-stacks which I've made this morning (bear in mind that I'm still learning this technique, and that the pumps were left on in the tank, so there was some unwanted subject movement which does show up in the two coral photos...):

Hey guys - since my last trip snorkling I found out I need a dive belt with some weights as my "factory fitted floaters" round my mid-section didn't allow me to go down and be there awhile inspecting the reef nicely so I need to purchase one of these belts! Anyone one know where I can puchase this and going prices on them? Thanx
-
great pic dude and the human pet looks alright too;) check out the thread called "who our fish see" - mods can send this there I think!
-
hey mods.
i want you to start a poll on powderblue tangs.
with the following..
>ppl who have kept them alive successfully for longer than a year
>kept alive, but not for a full year
>tried to keep one, but not successfully
>tried a few times, unsuccessful in all cases
(or at least something along those lines)
the reasoning for this poll is i think these fish should be on the list of fish not to keep.
i dont think i know of 1 reefer that is keeping 1 successfully.
i recon the results are going to be pretty shocking.. and tell their own story.

Hi All
I have been here for some time now, but have been reading and following some of the threads in the back ground and most of all I have been learning from you all.
I have also been setting up my first Marine Tank, but I am not new to the game as I have been keeping fresh water tanks for about 20 years, hence the reason for taking my time to do things right the first time.
I have attached a number of pics of my tank now that I am finnished the building.
Now all I need to do is start filling and running the tank.
Please, if you guys can see anything that I may have done incorrectly please let me know so that I can rectify it before I start the filling process.
I hope this works???
Here the Tank is finnally complete (Tank size is lenght 1500mm x width 450mm x deep 450mm) Holds around 290 L with the sump a total of around 380 L.
This is the inside of the cabinet showing the sump, that will have a deep sand bed and live rock.
My Reef Octopus Protien Skimmer all piped in with a by pass to be able to adjust the flow through the skimmer.
I have piped in a UV Filter which is conected to a 1000L/Hr Pump which returns water to the display tank, I also have a second pump returning water to the tank at a rate of 2000L/Hr which doesn't pass through the UV Filter.
You can also see the plug arrangement above the UV Filter this is done so that I can un plug and replace anything if it should go faulty in the future without having to try and get in behind the tank when it is full.
The only pump that I have in the tank is a wave maker (Resun 15000)
I have 2 x 3Ft Reef white 10000 T5 tubes and 2 x 3ft Reef blue T5 tubes I also have 2 x 4Ft Life Glo T5 Tubes and 2 x 4Ft Marine Glo T5 Tubes.
I have installed 6 blue LEDs which will come on before the main lights and go off after the main lights so that I can simulate Dusk and Dawn.
Here the lid is open to show the lights, the rest are attached the un hinged side.
I made up the control box that allows me to be able to trun onoff everthing that is in the system.
I am also looking for some live rock that doesn't cost the earth, if anyone knows where I can get please let me know.
Thanks guys for all the advise you have given in your threads that I have been following and for any future advise that you can offer.
Best regards from a wet Durban.

Hi Guys and Gals,
ANy input to this question would be appreciated!...
As always we are planning out next BIGGER tank...so..
I would like 160cm x 60cm x 60 cm. I have used the glass Calculator and it recons that I use 12mm for sides and 16 mm for the base! But, due to cost. I am thinking 8mm sides and 12mm base. This gives me a safety factor of 2.1 (sides) and 2.7 (Base), not the 3.8!
My Question is this: I currently have a standard 4 foot (120cm x 45cm x 45cm) 6mm sides and 8mm Base. If I put these dimentions and thickness I get a safety factor of 2.2( for both). But I have had this tank for probably 10 years and no signs of breaking what so ever!! So the proof is in the pudding!!:yeahdude:
So if I go the cheaper option and use top bracing and base bracing, what do you guys think? I am not sure if the calculator takes bracing into account!
Any thoughts would be welcomed! Thanks:thumbup:

hi guys.
got home to a house smelling of burnt plastic!!
my reef octopus pump for my TS1 skimmer had failed and was bubbling nasty gases through my tank water!
no idea why it failed. was fully submerged and was working fine 3 hours ago.
i took it apart and check the impeller. clean as a whistle and i can rotate it very easily.
now the big questions!
will the gases that this failed pump affect my water at all??
should i be worried???
i think i was lucky that i walked in when i did cos i think i just caught it as it happened.
the second is that i am now way pissed off at reef octopus.
i maintained and cleaned that pump properly and out of the blue it fails like this??
is there any warranty or guarantee i can fall back on?
my guess is that it is around a year old. will have to check up on the real age

I am based in Port Elizabeth and glad to see some familiar names around here.
My business is based on custom built aquariums and maintenance and hardware.

I just wanted to thank all of you guys on the forum for your help and advice over the last few weeks. I have converted to a DSB, and yesterday changed over to reggies, and sorted out the powerheads positioning, it is really flowing nicely.
I can see now how I was sitting on a nitrate bomb with the coral chips in there. As soon as I took the coral chips off, the mess underneath was unbelievable. If I had to redo it again, I would of drained all the water out, then taken the coral chips out. It was disgusting!!!:nono:
Anyway, looking ahead, I have been given some excellent tips and advice by Madelein and her Husband Koos, a few little mods to the DSB, a bit of rockscaping, and then finished playing!!!!!!
I will reintroduce myself in another week or two with more pics now that I have finished, or should I do it after I have put a scrubber in? Did I say I was finished, here we go again, the joys of reefkeeping!!!!!
THANKS ALL THOUGH FOR BEING SO HELPFUL AND GIVING SO MUCH ADVICE, ALL OF YOU SHOULD OWN YOUR OWN LFS!!!!!!!:1::peroni::wave2:

Hi brenda :) before I start with the questions, could i just give a big thankyou for the time and dedication you give to this board. I'm sure you've helped prevent many a disaster with these beautiful animals :)
On the subject of additives for nennie's, I think it's generally accepted that trace amounts of garlic in fish diets aid in digestion, acceptance of food and general wellbeing. Would this apply to anemone's and if so, what quantities are considered safe and are there any dangers to this ?

Hi,
I have often wondered and ask many people about this lighting issue so I thought to open it up to the people. In a typical lighting canopy, I am not concerned yet about types of corals if the first canopy has 3 150 watt metal halides plus 4 T5 and the second has 2 250 watt metal halides and 4 T5. Both canopies have the same output. The question I would like to know is which of the two canopies will use less electricity? Is it cheaper to run 3 150 watts or 2 250 watts. Does it also depend on the size of the tank, lets say a standard 2 metre tank. Do you get better light distrubition with 3 lights or just the 2?
Cheers

I have changed my substrate now to reggies play sand. I put the old coral chips in netting and placed the nets on the play sand to help seed.
Any suggestions though on setting the power heads, so that it does not blow the substrate into one corner?
I did have play sand in my old tank and purposely went to coral chips because of the play sand being blown all around.
I presume the power heads would all have to point upwards?

ECMA Introduction
Howsit to all the guys in the Eastern Cape a couple of guys and I have decided to reborn the ECMA, committee members are as follows: Grant Buckley Chairman
Daniel Benkenstein Vice Chairman
Mike LotZ Secretary
Mark Kunhardt Treasurer
Mike Grigoratos
Dave van der Poel
Dale Moolman
The aim and point of this association is to help fellow reefers understand the hobby better and our committee members are taking this very seriously and we intend to make a difference!!!!! For one when I first started I made some stupid mistakes but after been taken under Mikes (Phat) wing and then under Daves I am moving in the right direction!!!!
We have had two committee meetings held in Beacon Bay and the following was discussed....firstly we made sure everyone knows what their responsibilities are in the committee and then moved on to ideas for our first proper meeting. We are very fortunate to be allowed to use the aquariums conference room, we are hoping to start off with a guest speaker Mr. Nail Vine who will talk to us on the basics of reef keeping (this may sound boring and some might say we know this but I say lets get together and give our ideas and opinions and share with everyone else what we have learnt and know). This will be followed by cleaning and re doing our aquariums tanks this is a possibility at the moment but defiantly something we want to help out with! We are wanting on Dave to finalise a date but this meeting will happen in the month of October!!!!
Before all this happens we are wanting to organise a little get together at Pampered Pets or Finny Flipper where hopefully Mike and Shaun will sell some products at some discounted prices (oh yes!!!! And we have a little braai or something.
There has been many tank tours and at the moment we are seeing the same beautiful tanks so what we have decided to do is to have an upside down tank tour get some experienced reefers that really know what they talking about and get them visit other reefers tanks and help them out, give advice and ideas, by doing this we are hopefully going to get new guys on the tank tours so that we not seeing the same tanks over and over again(though that is not a good thing because no one can get enough the beautys we have in the EC)
We are also wanting to get the newbies more educated in the hobby and by doing this, one like myself can ask for my tank to be looked at and then the Gurus of the hobby will be invited to the house of the newbie and will help the guy/gal out and give their opinions and advice. By doing this we are helping out of fellow reefers.
What a lot of people dont realise is that some people are not on the forums and do not have access to the wonderfully information, help and advice we are so luckily to have!
We intend to help these people and make their hobby even more enjoyable!!!!
If there is any info that you might need please dont hestitate to PM me or any of the other commitee members!!!
:yeahdude:

hello there, i am fairly new to the marine hoby and at present studying the differant options regarding lighting, I have the option of having only 4 x 54 T5 lights or 2 x 54 w T5 and 2 x 125watt MH, which will be better for me in the long term, im planning on starting out with fish only with LR, then adding some LPS then later on SPS and anemones, note that the height from lights to bottom of tank will be about 70cm.
Niel has helped me alot so far and if you on Niel Thank you very much, just want to get views from other reefers as well

Hi All,
Any idea where one can get reflectors in E.L?
-
I'm in need of urgent advice. I have a green slimey hair algae that is taking over my tank. It has been in the tank for a while but has really accelerated in growth in the last week or so.
I have tried Kalk wasser dossing. I have tried changing carbon in my mechanical filter. i have tried dropping water temps to 25 deg C.
Today i turned my 2off 150w MH off completely and i'm now only running 4 off T5 lamps two blue and two white. i also reduced the lights on my 2 off 4ft sumps which are home to substantial live rock (approx 90kg) and a large SDB.
My tank is 1450L x600W x 900 D
It's been suggested to me that the only way to get rid of it is to remove rock and scrub off the offending algae. I'm obviously reluctent to do this and was wondering if there aree ant other possible solutions?

do you think directional flow works better than Luminar/random and why ?

Hi All
After hearing comments from other people I thought I would start this thread not to bash the LFS (No need to mention names guys - as if they read this they know who they are), but rather to highlight some of the poor advice/comments that LFS have given,
not to say that all LFS are poor!
2 comments I've heard:
- "Yellow Tangs are known to love eating corals" :whistling:
- Advice given to a lady when buying a new SW tank. "just fill with your hose pipe, add a cap full of dechlorinator(SP?), and add the salt, add the Bio rock, and next weekend you can come and get a bunch of fish." This was only like a 150-200 litre tank.:censored:
So what bad comments have you heard? BUT LEASE DON'T MENTION NAMES, THIS IS NOT A MUD SLINGING THREAD!:nono:

Full system sales or multiple items for sale.Thread title: Jebo Nano for sale
Location: Johannesburg Honeydew
Shipping or Collection only: Collection only
Photo's and description/list of items for sale: Hi All
I was given a JBJ 25g nano from my father in law who is too old to maintain it. It hold about 100 litres and has a 36 watt PC tube and a whole lot of corals including dendronepthya, branching hammer, clove polyps, orange sponge, sun corals, cabbage coral (large), bubble coral and some pink zoanthids. It has about 15kg of live rock and the system has been running for three years.
I'm asking for R2500-00 non negotiable for the whole system. I will give the two sun corals away to a good home as I don't have time to really dedicate to them.
Here's a pic of the system

I have read old posts by members who have moved livestock straight across from their old systems to their new ones without problems. I will be needing to do the same once my new tank is completed since I will be using 90% of the rock from my old system plus I will be needing most of the important equipment such as return pumps to get it going.
Do you think there is going to be a problem moving my livestock from a 200L system to the new 600L one? I was told by my LFS that in theory there is enough bacteria in my current system to sustain my current livestock therefore there if I move my rocks, 50% of my water and my substrate across to the new tank it should sustain them there without problems. This does make sense to me, but I am still worried about ammonia spikes etc from having to add new rocks, new substrate, new DSB and from the old stuff as well having being moved.
I plan on using some Stability and Bio Digest to help with the process, however will this not cause problems down the line?
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

I need your expert advice on the attached pictures. Can you guys perhaps tell me if it will be possible to convert "this" section into a marine tank or is this section (1800 L x 2000 H x 1200 W) to big in terms of the glass thickness that will be required?

Hi, has anyone in the Cape area purchased one of these units.

Howdy!
well now that i stopped moving and renovating, after 7 months i can get my tank up and running again.
I am going to shutdown my 2 nano's and rebuild those and use the stock for my new 4ft.
the basics:
1200x450x450 DT, with single corner overlfow, water at 430, so a volume of 227L.
I have 2 sumps for it
one is 1000 x 400 x 600, with 3 chambers, the first is the mechanical, the second is a dsb which is 80cm x 40cm with a LR stand above, the 3rd chamber has about 2kgs of zeolite for bacteria growth, and then it overflows to the next sump. The other is 1100 x 400 x 600, with 4 chambers, the first will have my ts2 and chemical filters, then another LR chamber, a small dsb and finally the return to the tank.
I have turned a sand filter into a carbon reactor.
I have also created a 100L cryptic zone filter to add more bio-diversity.
my return is life tech 3000L pump, with 5 sunsun 5000Lph for the DT. I have created a closed loop LR stand as well, and going to have about 5-8cm of gravel in my tank.
for lighting i have homemade light unit, 20k mh 150w and 2 t5's 30w, with 2 mh 150 10k as well, plus 4 t8's 30w.
for the sump and ATS i have ordered 4 mh 35w 3000k
thats it for now

Hi all
My Name is Russell i have recently brought a reef tank, it has been running for about two years or so i was told. I came across this forum while searching for more information and it seemed a good place to start. Here are a few pictures of my tank i was wondering if anyone could help me identify the corals, i already know the names of the fish well sort of. Also if there is anything that needs to be changed inside my tank i would greatly appreciate the addvice.
I am doing water changes every two weeks and the temperature is stable at 27o and the salinity is around 1.024. The Tank Measures 100cm X 45cm X 50cm and has 225litres of water.
Lighting i'm not sure but they look like flurecent tubes and there are three and one is blue.
The guy who delivered the tanks said the names of the fishes were:
If they ear wrong can you give me the proper names and also it would be great to have the scientific names?
False Gramma X 2
Jumping bean
Bananna Wrass
Zebra Sailfin Tang
Goldie X 2
Yellow tail Blue Damsel
Coral Beauty
Convince Bleanie
Clown fish X 2
Cleaner shrimp X 2

Zoanthids or colonial anemones
Order Zoanthidea
updated Oct 08
Where seen? These tiny but tough flower-like animals often carpet rocky and rubbly areas. Some are adapted be regularly exposed to the air at low tide. These animals are often the first to settle on any vacated space in a reef.
What are zoanthids? Zoanthids belong to the same
Class Anthozoa as sea anemones. But while sea anemones belong to
Order Actiniaria, zoanthids belong to a different Order Zoanthidea. Zoanthid taxonomy is undergoing some review so the number of known zoanthids species range from 200 to 60 depending on how the species are defined.
Features: Zoanthids look like tiny sea anemones. But while sea anemones are solitary polyps, most zoanthids live in colonies like corals do. But zoanthids don't produce a hard skeleton like the hard coral colonies. Instead, their tissues are leathery and composed partly of chitin (the same substance that insect exoskeletons are made of).
The typical polyp has a cylindrical body column, topped by a smooth, flat oral disk that is edged by short tentacles, usually in two rows close to one another. The oral disk is often in a contrasting, bright colour from the usually brown or drab tentacles. When exposed at low tide, however, the animal retracts its tentacles into its body column and then looks like a strange blob of jelly.
Zoanthids may have three different living arrangements. Each zoanthid polyp may be solitary but located near one another. These polyps are large with thick, fleshy polyps on tall columns. Or the zoanthid polyps are joined to one another by stolons (tube-like structures that spread across the ground like a root or runner). Or the zoanthid polyps may be embedded in a common mat of tissue. The tissue may be strengthened by incorporating sand. The colony may form mats on the sand or encrust rocky areas.
The shape of the same zoanthid species may vary depending on where they are found. Those inhabiting areas with strong waves tend to be short and hug the surface. Others found in deeper, calmer waters are taller, with longer tentacles.
Sometimes confused with
sponges,
ascidians and other blob-like animals. Here's more on
how to tell apart blob-like animals. They are also sometimes confused with
sea anemones. Here's more on
how to tell apart animals with a ring of smooth tentacles. The various zoanthid species are also sometimes confused with one another. Here's more on
how to tell apart some zoanthids.
Toxic flowers: Some zoanthids contain powerful toxins to protect themselves against predators. The most toxic marine poison, palytoxin, was discovered in a zoanthid. Minute quantities of palytoxin can paralyse and even kill. So don't handle zoanthids with open wounds on your hand or touch your mouth or eyes after handling them. It is believed that the toxins are not produced by the animal but by bacteria that live in symbiosis with the polyps. However, some animals have adapted to the poison and even eat zoanthids. These include the
Common hairy crab,
Filefishes and
nudibranchs.
What do they eat? Most zoanthids feed on plankton, some also feed on finer particles. Many harbour zooxanthellae (symbiotic algae) inside their bodies. These carry out photosynthesis and may contribute nutrients to the host polyp.
Zoanthid babies: Zoanthids generally reproduce asexually: new polyps bud to enlarge the colony. However, they also reproduce sexually. The polyps may produce sperm or eggs, but usually only either one at a time. Eggs and sperm are released synchronously for external fertilization, in mass spawning similiar to that practiced by hard corals.
Human uses: Palytoxin, the poison extracted from a zoanthid, has been used to better understand how our body works and may provide better treatment of hypertension, heart disease and other disorders. Zoanthids are also a popular item in the live aquarium trade, although their toxins make them dangerous to handle.
Status and threats: Zoanthids are not listed among the threatened animals of Singapore. However, like other creatures of the intertidal zone, they are affected by human activities such as reclamation and pollution. Trampling by careless visitors, and overcollection also have an impact on local populations.

its hitting autum here in norway and i took my 100mm out into the forest when i went for a walk this afternoon. I counted an incredible 24 different varieties of mushroom, many of which are eddible although i'm not taking a chance this year untill i know for sure!
but they were great subjects to get with my 100mm macro lense so i thought i would post a few shots here.

This is a new project that i want to start, at home i have a pond, outside,it's about 2m*1.5 and is about 900cm deep. if it is worthwile, and possible,i am looking to expand the pond size to 3m*2m*1m(depth will vary from deep to shallow to a small "beach" area. this is my plan
- I rebuild the walls, plaster it and paint it with a suitable rubberising agent
- I dig a suitable hole for a overflow, which will lead to the filter
- Dig another hole for a "wave" effect, a rotating arm with a piston like motion
that will suck, and flush water back into the pond to create that " motion of the
ocean"
- Add a suitable substrate, coastal sand for example
- Build a rocky formation, some overhangs and nice spots for corals
- Add RO water, salt and LR,and leave it to cycle
My main concerns are rapid water evaporations, causing continious fluctuations in the parameters, but to balance it out i'm planning to connect the RO unit permanently, and let it work like a flushbowl. Then heating the water, will the winter have a negative effect, and will a decent chiller help?
I really need some good help and advice before i start the project, but will it be possible to achieve it here in Gauteng?

Thanks for your email concerning my partner pilky im sorry to tell you but he passed away in june thanks to you all for welcoming him to your site:(

Hi Brenda, could i get your thoughts on the use of iodine to help newly introduced anemone's colour up. Often one hears of them stressing with the move and loss of colour leading to panic stations, possibly this with target feeding may raise the mortality ratio ?
-
Just a quick one to all the chemical gurus.
Can you mix Maxi-zorb carbon and Extrax Phos in the same container to run tank water through?
Or will it cause some kind of chemical reaction when they touch?
Or do they have to be in their own bag (stocking) seperate, but in the same container or seperate containers?

Does this stuff make a difference?
After i add it my skimmer goes crazy, so im not sure if it has any benefits.

hey guys,
i am selling this beautiful chrispa anemone on behalf of my brother.
he is huge! a little smaller than a dinner plate when fully open!
he also has an awesome metallic green shimmer to him.
reason for selling:
he is just to large for my brothers nano now.
here is a picture of him a while back...
i dont have an up to date picture of him, but i can tell you he is now twice that size and in great health. very sticky. and eating full silversides!

I've been reading the manual on my camera and it says that when you zoom in to max, which is 18x on mine, that the megapixels drop from 10mp down to 3mp. Is this the same with DSLR camera's and zoom lenses or does it only apply to the compact camera's?
-
How long can you keep nsw for, keeping it cool and in the shade, I collect 500ls at a time, and then change 100 every week, usually use it in a month, could you keep it longer than that though?
-
I currently have the coral chips as my substrate, but as I have learnt on here that it is not that good at all.
So I should obviously change, I was looking at maybe going reggies route as it will be much cheaper, argonite would be too expensive, as I would probably need 50kgs.
I did previously have reggies in my 4ft tank, but the problem was that the power heads had to blow upwards because the reggies was too fine and made the water too milky. I will obviously have to fiddle to get it right if I go the reggies route.
Also, 4 weeks ago I converted my sump to a DSB, and since my parameters are up the wall (this is why I am begginnig to get reluctant to change even the substrate now), I also can't test, because the maid misunderstood me and threw a brand new test kit, nori, all my flakes etc away when I asked her to clean up everywhere where it was wet. one goldie has a bad sore on the base of the tail, the one jumping bean has a bad sore just under the gill, and I see the Iridis wrasse has behind the gill. I presume this is only a result of the parameters. I actually felt like throwing the towel in yesterday, and am quite stressed, and feel now that I should never of converted the sump. The poor jumping beans were spawing prior, and now I am sure the one is history.
Will I not cause more damage now in the long run changing the substrate.

I need some advice. As some of you guys would know. I am getting a 1.2*800W*600H tank built in 10mm glass with black silicone.
I want to go rimless at the the top. ie. No bracing. Do you guys rekon it will be safe, or I should just stick with Euro bracing as planned?
Les, Bob, im sure you guys will be able to help me out here. :)

Hey guys, I'm trying to find out what people use to speed up the nitrogen cycle. More for interests' sake, I am content with letting it run out naturally but just want to gain as much knowledge as possible (tank has been running for two weeks today). I am a bit hesitant with going with advice from the LFS, so was just wondering what, if any, products you use and with what results?
-
Hey
I baught a few kg of live rock 2 weeks ago with allot of caulerpa on it and when I put the rocks into the tank I noticed a small yellowish anenome on it! I only had chance to take a photo today so here it goes...
It's foot is yellow with red spots and the crown is whitish yellow and a huge mouth!!! I've never kept nennies and never had the intensions to keep them but seeing that I have one I thaught that I just can't let the thing die so any info on how to care for it... Is it a danger to any inhabatintss of the tank maybe?
My biggest problem is that my tank is still mostly in cycle and I read that nennies need exelent water quility and lighting.
Any info would be apreciated
Thanx:thumbup:

Mentioned awhile ago that I had found a plan for a scrubber so now I will wait for a bit to see if it works as planned. As you can see I ditched the lid and things have started to grow like mad. I am trying the scrubber to cut down on the use of chemical de-nitrate products and cut costs. Thanks to Johannes @ NAAC for help with pendant lighting and materials for the scrubber

Why Parents Drink
The boss wondered why one of his most valued employees was absent but had not phoned in sick one day. Needing to have an urgent problem with one of the main computers resolved, he dialed the employee's home phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper. 'Hello ?'
'Is your daddy home?' he asked.
'Yes,' whispered the small voice.
May I talk with him?'
The child whispered, 'No .'
Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, 'Is your Mommy there?' 'Yes'
'May I talk with her?' Again the small voice whispered, 'No'
Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, 'Is anybody else there?'
'Yes,' whispered the child, 'a policeman.'
Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, 'May I speak with the policeman?'
'No, he's busy,' whispered the child.
'Busy doing what?'
'Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the Fireman,' came the whispered answer.
Growing more worried as he heard a loud noise in the background through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked, 'What is that noise?'
'A helicopter' answered the whispering voice.
'What is going on there?' demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive.
Again, whispering, the child answered,
'The search team just landed a helicopter'
Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked, 'What are they searching for?'
Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle...
'ME.'

Two boys are playing cricket on a field in Durban, when one is attacked by a vicious Rottweiler. Thinking quickly, the other boy took his cricket bat and managed to wedge it down the dogs collar and twist, luckily breaking the dogs neck and stopping the attack. A reporter who was strolling by sees the incident, and rushes over to interview the boy.
Young Sharks Fan Saves Friend From Vicious Animal, he starts writing in his notebook.
But Im not a Sharks fan, the little hero replied.
Sorry, since we are in Durban, I just assumed you were, said the reporter and starts again.
Stormers Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Attack,
he continued writing in his notebook.
Im not a Stormers fan either!, the boy said.
I assumed everyone in Durban was either for the Sharks or the Stormers. So what team Do you root for? the reporter asked.
Im a Blue Bulls fan!!!!! , the child beamed.
The reporter starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes, Little Bastard From Pretoria Kills Beloved Family Pet.

hi guys.
anyone use these timers?
i have bought 3 of them and 1 by 1 they have all failed. i'm now back onto good old fashion timers.
going to return them to builders warehouse 2day or 2mrw.

What are the guidlines of adding addittional water volume to your system, and increasing your percecent of inmates.
Say for example you take a 50l nano, and it is full with 1 liitle chromis in, add a 1000l flow bin to it, you could pack the tangs in there sort of like a box of bait sardines.
I know your first concern would have to be over crowding and fish compatbility would be tested, some species like tangs need the physical swimming space, others like damsels want less inhabitants, but generally what would be the guidlines of adding more volume and increasing your tank inmates.

I got a bi colour a week ago today, came in the singapore shipment 3 weeks ago, he is till not eating. I asked the LFS what they feed, and they said marine mix, which I bought to feed. He does go around pecking on the rocks and sponges etc, he is tame, not like a new fish that hides in the rocks for ages.
I am getting a bit nervous now though, cause he looks like he is loosing a bit of weight now and should've taken to food already. He seems like he has settled in, there is no one in the tank to hassle him, I do have a pair of jumping beans which he seems to of made friends with, but is very tame.
would a muscle work?

I need to change the substrate in the DT, I currently have coral chips, but want to change to argonite. I was thinking of placing the argonite in the DT in plastic bowls for a few weeks just to become active, then removing the coral.
What is the best method to swop over though? I will have coral chips under the rocks etc, would I have to remove rocks etc. Also how may kilos for a 1830x610 DT, I would prefer to go 3cm's deep.

Hi all
Lorri's the name and I live in East London. Just invested in a new tank almost a "cube" 80cm X 60 and 60cm deep. Tank has not arrived yet - only coming in a month's time. Bought a display tank from a local marine shop and it comes with the works. Don't know which make of protein skimmer, sump, 4 T5 and a cabinet.
Now I am one of those really dangerous people who know just a little but not enough to really get this thing going on my own, so I'm gonna need lotsa help. Have two teenage children who have dabbled in this for a while and now I have decided to give this a go as well - properly this time.
I have read the starting up the aquarium thread - lots of good advice there. Looked at some nice photo's on rock structures in cubes, decided on where to put the tank when it arrives.
So all there is left to do for now is learn some more so that I don't mess up and kill everything in the tank.
-
Hey everyone, im looking for a 70w Mh balast and fitting, if not with the fitting, just the balast, have got bulbs. Just need the rest...
-
Hi everyone.
I have started with a very basic tank 3 days ago learnt siome stuff the hard way but am picking up pace now.
hope to learn alot from you guys.
-
Hi everyone, I am new to marine, and I am going to set up a tank within a month or so, still doing the research needed. If anyone has suggestions, feel free!
I am thinking of going small at first, don't want to spend my life savings (which is not very much...I am 17 ;))on a complete flop. I've kept tropical ever since I had my 6th birthday.
I had this in mind:
display 326 L (w600 x h450 x l900)
cabinet from cherry wood
2 metal halide lights (suggestions?)
2 T5 (suggestions?)
sump 60 L (too small?)
don't really know what else I need, I'll get the quote in 2 hrs then I'll know!
going for DSB
I intend keeping: (suggestions and advice?)
3 regal tangs
1 copper band butterfly
3 clowns
2 Damsels (blue)
live rock from Fiji
and some soft corals.
If you have advice, I already appreciate it!

Hello
I'm running 2 x skimmers in my 1,8m Total volume is plus minus 650L taking into account LR and sump.
TS 1 Reeftek rated @ 400L and a red sea Berlin 25-250 think it is rated at 750L.
I also have a hang on skimmer that I can hang on in the sump rated for 150L.
What will your advise be? add the hang on or will I be skimming ok with this two skimmers?
-
Hey people :)
im looking at something that is cost effective and safe to hold LARGE amounts of LR.
i went to game and saw these kiddies pools for cheap cheap under 200bucks!
would these be okay to house some liverock? it didnt give how many litres it hold, but tunes it 300cm wide.. which is pretty huge.
any other ideas will help greatly!

Hangover Ratings
1 star hangover
No pain. no real feeling of illness. You slept in your own bed and when you woke up
there were no traffic cones in there with you.
You are still able to function relatively well on the energy stored up from all those
vodka and Red Bulls.
However, you can drink 10 bottles of water and still feel as parched as the Sahara.
Even vegetarians are craving a Cheeseburger and a bag of fries.
2 star hangover
No pain, but something is definitely amiss. You may look okay but you have the
attention span and mental capacity of a stapler.
The coffee you hug to try and remain focused is only exacerbating your rumbling gut,
which is craving a full English breakfast.
Although you have a nice demeanour about the office, you are costing your employer
valuable money because all you really can handle is some light filing, followed by
aimlessly surfing the net and writing junk e-mails.
3 star hangover
Slight headache. Stomach feels crap. You are definitely a space cadet and not so
productive.
Anytime a girl or lad walks by you gag because the perfume/aftershave reminds you
of the random gin shots you did with your alcoholic friends after the bouncer kicked
you out at 1:45 am.
Life would be better right now if you were in your bed with a kebab and a litre of coke
watching daytime TV.
You've had 4 cups of coffee, a gallon of water, 6 chicken nuggets and a litre of diet
coke yet you haven't peed once.
4 star hangover
You have lost the will to live. Your head is throbbing and you can't speak too quickly
or else you might spew.
Your boss has already lambasted you for being late and has given you a lecture for
reeking of booze.
You wore nice clothes, but you smell of socks, and you can't hide the fact that you
(depending on your gender) either missed an oh-so crucial spot shaving, or, it looks
like you put your make-up on while riding the dodgems.
Your teeth have their own individual sweaters. Your eyes look like one big vein and
your hairstyle makes you look like a reject from a second-grade class circa 1976.
You would give a weeks pay for one of the following - home time, a cheeseburger
and somewhere to be alone, or a Time Machine so you could go back and NOT have
gone out the night before.
You scare small children in the street just by walking past them.
5 star hangover
You have a second heartbeat in your head, which is actually annoying the employee
who sits next to you.
Vodka vapour is seeping out of every pore and making you dizzy.
You still have toothpaste crust in the corners of your mouth from brushing your teeth.
Your body has lost the ability to generate saliva, so your tongue is suffocating you.
You'd cry but that would take the last drop of moisture left in your body.
Death seems pretty good right now. Your boss doesn't even get mad at you and
your co-workers think that your dog just died because you look so pathetic. You
should have called in sick because, let's face it, all you can manage to do is breathe
..... very gently.
6 star hangover
You arrive home and climb into bed.
Sleep comes instantly, as you were fighting it all the way home in the taxi.
You get about 2 hours sleep until the noises inside your head wake you up.
You notice that your bed has been cleared for take off and is flying relentlessly
around the room.
No matter what you do you now, you're going to chuck.
You stumble out of bed and now find that your room is in a yacht under full sail.
After walking along the skirting boards on alternating walls knocking off all the
pictures, you find the toilet.
If you are lucky you will remember to lift the lid before you spontaneously explode
and wake the whole house up with your impersonation of walrus mating calls.
You sit there on the floor in your undies, cuddling the only friend in the world you
have left (the toilet), randomly continuing to make the walrus noises, spitting, and
farting. Help usually comes at this stage, even if it is short lived.
Tears stream down your face and your abdomen hurts. Help now turns into abuse
and he/she usually goes back to bed leaving you there in the dark.
With your stomach totally empty, your spontaneous eruptions have died back to 15-
minute intervals, but your body won't relent.
You are convinced that you are starting to turn yourself inside out and swear that you
saw your tonsils shoot out of your mouth on the last occasion.
It is now dawn and you pass your disgusted partner getting up for the day as you try
to climb into bed. She/he abuses you again for trying to get into bed with lumpy bits
of dried vomit in your hair.
You reluctantly accept their advice and have a shower in exchange for them driving
you to the hospital.
Work is simply not an option.
The whole day is spent trying to avoid anything that might make you sick again, like
moving.
You vow never to touch a drop again and who knows for the next two or three hours
at least you might even succeed.
OK, now hands up all those who have never had a six star hangover!!
Thought so!!

Hi guys,
I have seen many posts and a very recent one of fish jumping out of open top tanks.
Why does fish do this? And what are the most common known fish to do this?
I have an open top tank, so I may need to re-check my fish list.
Thanks

I would like to put a pin cushion in, but first want to increase lighting, will it be nibbled though by a bi-colour or an emporer angel, I have a bi-colour at the moment, and have purposly avoided going for corals that will be angel food. I have not yet got an emporer, but is there any chance the pin cushion would be angel food?

so im looking for the most silent pumps i can find for flow and for return because my nano is in my room and i have to put off at least one pump just to keep the nboise low enough for sleep.

Hi Hennie
In your article on rearing clown fish, the method of catching the fry, i followed to a T....... however after 2 or 3 hours i only managed to catch an estimated 15 or 18 of the fry, i would guess there was easy 100 eggs.... thats a dismal success rate for me......
any tricks you can give me like type of torch?
can i use a brine shrimp net to catch the fry or would the net damage the fry?
any thoughts would be hugely welcomed !!

We purchased a Reef Octopus Hang on Back Protein Skimmer BH-2000 last week and installed it on Monday. what im finding is if i allow the air to run using the silencer (free flow air) we get lots of micro bubbles in the tank, the instruction manual says to use the bubble stopper sponge but its not helping, the only way is to turn the air off completely but i dont think its skimming anything then! do the bubbles need to be in the skimmer for it to actually do its job? if so then how can i reduce the amount of micro bubbles getting back into the tank from the out flow!
here is a link to the manual for the skimmer.

Hi All
I have discovered a couple of worms hiding underneath my rocks and checked up on the net about them. I have not yet id them but i heard fire worms is bad for you reef, should i remove all of the worms or is there any good worms that i should actualy keep. I read that bristle worms is actualy good for your reef and fire worm will eat your nennies. How do i id them, is there a site with pictures of the worms..

I finally decided that the glass I bought a year ago and had stashed behind the couch needs to be transformed into a slightly more operable tank. My 100l was not only small but limiting. Here are some photo's of my progress.
Dimensions: 1500(w) X 500(d) X 600(h)
Glass: 8mm side walls
Base: 2 x 6mm
Total Volume: 450l

Step 1: Laminating my base

Step 2: Mount Back and Side Panes

Step 3: Mount Front and Side Panes

Step 4: Silicone in Bracing(Base and Top Rim) - with a little bit of added pressure

Step 5: Begin washing Playsand, good thing I listened to what was said on the forum, howz this ****
do=displayimg&imgid=17458" target="_blank">

Finally the full frontal ;)
But that has nothing on my lighting unit, totally futuristic! Check it

I received a box. With issues 1-81 of Practical Aquarium, missing 5 issues. These books were printed in 2000 by Hyachette. Anyway, nice idea and nice setup. You split each issue that is clearly marked into sections that goes into its own group in 4 binders. It coves both freshwater and marine setups and fish. Maybe MASA reef keeping magazine should check the format out.
Anyway started reading (scanning while on the loo) the section on setting up a marine aquarium. Wow did the world move on in 9 years. They still advocate the use of crushed coral as substrate. Having Caulerpa in your display tank. And no mentioning on DSB's. (ok not to the point I got to). But still a lot of other interesting info that is valid.
Do anybody else have these books?
-
Hey guys I just want to share my new inverter with you all.....no more power problems for me thanks lol
-
I just wanted to thank all you guys on here, I have really learnt a lot on here in the short while I have been a newb........things that I would never of learnt with out all you and the input. Sometimes 10 newbs will all ask the same question in a day, but all on here have patience and have pleasure in helping.
Unfortunately when I first started up, I did not have acess to the forum, and had togo on the advice of my LFS, and he is a bit too old school and does not believe in DSB's etc, but he was always was willing to help, and I think us newbs can be more painful than an urchin inside an anemone.
I also owe lots to Sims, he is always an sms away.
Since being a member on Masa, I converted and put the DSB in!!! I did take a lot of the original big rock out as it was trapping the detrus, but also put about 10% new rock in.
In the pics, you will see the one of the bleached nemmie, I went against all the voices in my head and advice from the forum and bought a bleached nemmie. When I had actually bought it, it had come in the day before on a Singapore shipment, and the LFS was already selling it on a special!!! How is that for telling you not to buy. However though, why I bought I dont know, but I persisted, somewhere in the first 3 days I actually tried to take it out 3 times as if it was dead, but evrytime there was still a bit more life. I persisted, feeding it 3 times a day on bits of pacific krill, I now am on little bits of chokka every 2nd day, it has improved greatly and I saw a little hint of purple in it yesterday. It has gained a bit more stickiness on the tenticles, and if pull it through, it would give me much more pleasure.
I really want to change the substrate and put argonite in, but I will rather let it settle after the DSB mods.
Also the skimmer, it is a Weipro, SA 2015, the biggest load of rubbish, it is rated for 200gl, and skims 10% of the cup in a day, as soon as you raise the water level, it skims a cupful in 5 mins. I have tried everything everyday, and just can't tune it. So I am looking for another, preferably a good second hand.
Lights, this is my priority now, I was supposed to put in 2 more T5's this month end, but unfortunately my kids had swine flu, and it has been a really hard month.
Lights followed by a skimmer that works are on my priority list.
I must also thank my wife for her patience while I try and tackle my dream, we actually can't really afford a hobby like this, and we do have months where we are hungry. I think even the kids have imagined the size of the fillets on nemo!!!!!!
Herewith pics and thanks all (I will submit them one after another)
-
Ok, seriously I need to get a better marine identification book ...
Check this dude out, I picked this piece of rock up off Kelso shoreline and was looking at the coral worms which were still alive. There was a funny see-through green sponge-like growth on the one side that I didn't pay much attention to - only when I got it home and into my tank did it start extending fingers .... It's really sticky and grabs hold of anything in reach but I can't see any mouth on it. Another strange part is that it certainly isn't circular like most local nennie's I've come across.
Anyone got an idea what it is ?
Anyways, from the same piece of rock I found 5 peanut worms that were destined for the biltong paradise in the sky had I not saved them:)
-
Happy birthday dude! Enjoy the rest of the day and may you see many many more:thumbup:

hey hey, eventually after 6 weeks of cycling in huge buckets and preparing for the big day, it happened!
The tank is in, water looks lovely, snail is more than happy, or so i think. water parameters are all stiil very low after 2 days and the 2 new hermit crabs are having a feast in the sump.
should i still be expecting a spike, or mini cycle or would it already have started?

Wow, how many new guys did join today, including the weekend?
Welcome to you all.

Sawubona fellow MASA members
Just popping in to introduce myself. So, before I get bombarded with all the useful information, let me give you a description of my previous experience and future plans regarding this wonderful financial black hole we call a hobby...
I had freshwater planted aquariums all through high school, really helped with the chemistry and biology, you learn more if you have an actual interest in what you are learning :). Unfortunately had to come to an end due to varsity.
Now is the time to get started again, close to setting up a 3' planted FW aquarium Diana Walstad Style. When that is going I will at least have eye candy while I set up a 4' marine tank. I have been doing my rounds on this forum, learning ALOT before I even buy gear.
So, here are my marine aspirations categorized:
Filtration (most important first)
(Just as side note, I am planning to do my sump in multiple plastic crates - the ones on wheels, they will be elevated according to order, first will be highest etc, so that gravity can do its magic. The total "sump" volume is expected to be at least 75% of the DT)
The overflow will be directed to an algae scrubber unit (have seen brilliant ideas) with a bypass for ease of cleaning / clogging. The effect I am hoping for is that the algae on the scrubber will out compete the algae in the DT, as well as keeping PO4 levels at bay. It will also have the side benefit of evaporative cooling (if i choose to leave it open to atmosphere). This unit will be lit by a 4000K energy saving bulb, "micro" algae likes the lower spectrum light it seems.
This will be followed by a compartment containing the protein skimmer. Next up is the DSB consisting of playsand (15cm thick), I will try and maximize the surface area. Macro algae will also be kept in this compartment and will be lit by a 6500K'ish energy saving bulb - it is what most green/brown plants prefer. This compartment will most likely find itself in a large diameter, semi shallow bucket to give the macro algae enough room, but at the same time have just enough flow across the DSB, but not too much as to create an unfavorable environment for the anaerobic bacteria.
Above mentioned compartment will be followed by a compartment containing the heater, return pump, auto top-up unit and other goodies I see fit.
Lighting
I will most likely go the Metal Halide route, I just love the shimmering effect (I do know that I can get it with T5s by adding a single source light source such as a LED, but I do not think it will have such a drastic effect). I will of course have some T5s that will supplement the light wavelengths where the 14 000 K MH will lack. Just figuring out a descent hood design that will lend itself to my ends, might even opt for an expensive combo hood...
Display Tank
As mentioned, the display tank will be a manageable 4' glass tank. I will use "thinish" aragonite substrate to keep nutrient/detritus buildup to a minimum. I will use egg crate and PVC to act as "skeleton" for my reef. As for live rock, I will most likely go for the cured / semi-cured type, but I will break my head about the details of that closer to the time. As for a reef bio-tipe, I have not chosen an eco-system I want to mimic, still looking for descent resources (the free kind, had my fair share of books thank you!).
Constraints
Well, I am currently in Secunda, so the closest shops will be in PTA/JHB. I have also run into a few minor obstacles, such as the availability of DIY resources. No readily available Epoxy paint / resin and stuff like that. But hey, gives me an excuse to goto Jozi aight? It was funny when I phoned Arcona, looking for Alanod, the lady there was so surprised. She asked me where did I hear about them, then I told her about building reflectors for marine tank, the she was like: "Ooohhh, the marine people". I got this huge grin on my face :D
Anyway, I am not trying to set a record for the longest first post on MASA, so I will be concluding. Thank you to all the members, embracing the hungry minds and feeding them and helping this hobby grow in popularity.
Regards,
Faust

Hey guys thought I start this cool thread -
-
Hi guys and gals.
My name is Steven
Been reading this forum for a few weeks now and decided to join.
Always wanted a Marine tank. I always kept freshwater Fish mainly Discus and Angels.
I am looking at turning my Std 4ft with a 70l sump and DIY Syphon overflow into a Marine tank.
I wanna start off with a FOWLR and later getting a REEF tank going.
First i wanna ask all the questions and then start getting what i need together.
I live in Kempton Park where abouts is a decent marine petshop.
-
I just want to say hallo, and that every thing on my side is going very well. My 1.2m tank is 13 months old I enjoy every moment of it. I am raily thinking of a 1.5 thank. My dother 11j want to start her on tank. So one of these days I will have two tanks.
I will post pohtos as soon as I work out how it works.

I am from Jeffreys and new to the saltwater world.
I aquired the following tank that was not running for a while,
DT 1800X500X610 - 10mm glass, with a overflow in the left rear corner, and outlet drilled through the bottom glass.
2x return pipes on the right side, and 1 hole for water changes, also has an ATO in to the skimmer chamber.
Sump 1700x400x340 - 6mm glass, 7 chambers, skimmer, 2 chambers that was filled with
live rock and bioballs(currently no
live rock, i chucked the bio-balls),a chamber with a pump that ran through the chiller, and then the chamber for the two return pumps.
2x return pumps red sea Berlin 2.2m 1600lh. and 1 Jun 3.0m - 2500lh.
1x Berlin skimmer 25-250gallon Tripple pass.
Stand: 40x40 square tubing galvanised - 1800x400x1000, the whole stand tank, sump, equipment and ATO will be hidden behind a cabinet.
Lighting currently 2x 400w metal halides.
2x heaters 1x 200w Jager - 1x 300w Natural.
Please let me know what you think I should do for flow, and what i should do with the sump, i want to put a
DSB in.
I think the skimmer is also to small for the size tank.
Tank was standing for a while, it has algea growth on the glass, with what should i clean the tank with.
I would like to have a FOWL tank, but I am sure that I will keep coral later on.
Ur comments and advice please,
Norries

Hi all
I've been keeping a strict eye on my water parameters for the past few moths (being a beginner it's the first obvious thing to check).
My parameters is as follows:
Amonia - 0
Nitrate - 0
Nitrite - 0
SG - 1023
Phosphate - 0.1 (down from 1.0 6 weeks ago)
but the problem one is: KH - 190?
I don't know if I read the chart correct, but it tells me to multiply the number of drops added by 10 to get my reading...
The startpoint (first drop) will give me a blue color and I must keep adding a drop (and shake the test tube well) before adding another drop and must stop when my test tube have a yellow color. Well, I did this over the weekend and counted 19 drops... Shall I check the KH on my RO or must I just do a massive water change with seawater I get from 2oceans aquarium?
Any help will be appreciated
ps I'm running a FOWLR system (1m X 300 X 350: 100L DT) - Sump (450 X 250 X 300: 50L) - Lighting: 2 X T8 White and 1 X T5 blue

Hi guys,
Was just wondering if it would be possible to convert a in-sump skimmer (TS2) to be an external skimmer?
What would it take and what would you have to do?

Hi Guys
How can you measure kelvin in your tank, i take it if lets say you have 2 10000k lamps and 2 20000k lamps your kelvin rating should then be aroun 15000k or am i wrong. Also do you kelvin rating drop as it goes deeper into the tank and will th kelvin rating of a lamp degrade with age.
Thanks people

Seems that everyones taking naughty pics of their clowns lately. Well I'm as much for a good ole perv as anyone else so here are my clowns trying to have a personal moment.
The first picture is of the clowns preparing the area where they wanted to lay the eggs. This started several hours beforehand.
The next pics are of the female laying the eggs and the male passing over them and fertilising them. Please note that clown males dig big chicks, so the large clown is the female. Nothing wrong with that.... don't judge!
The next 2 are of the male doing the wild thang
And finally a picture of the eggs. They lasted for all of half a beer, before the other fish and the clowns ate them.

Hi.
Does anybody know how to open these pumps without taking a hammer to it?
-
hi guys,
i recently started wondering..
what fish food has the least amount of pollutants in it?
so in other words, what is best to feed?
nori?
flakes?
live brine?
frozen brine?
pellets?
if we are going to feed we might as well feed the best stuff for our systems health!
-
I really enjoy the Bi-colour angel, it is the most beautiful fish to me, that and an emporer. Now I managed to get myself a bi-colour last week, and I know you stand a 50-50 chance with them, but otherwise now my sponges that were on the rocks, well they alot smaller now. I have purposely avoided going for the softies etc, but I do have several anonomes and locally caught tubeworms, I am sure these should be safe? You agree?
Secondly, what other fish will not touch your anenomes and tubeworms, also I can harvest the tubeworms locally. I mean fish that were generally not regarded reef safe, confirm the other angels will not touch them? I know I can also harvest zoas, but these will be nibbled to death.
Also any idea where I can get an emporer and what they retail for?

Hey all - anyone in municipalities or in the eskom industry know anything about this? I spoke to one of the chaps working in our local municipality here and said there's rumours of another 30/32% increase:whistling: early next year to have enough in the koffers before the 2010 matches start:(

hey guys.
i was wondering if its work importing your own liverock and then selling it off to other reefers at a good price.
your LFS may sell it for like R160.. remember they have to cover rental costs, etc.
i read how to cure live rock. and it doesnt look like it will cost to much. so, what do you guys think? worth giving it a try?

Due to the fact that the previous meeting was quite late during August and a "long" weekend is coming up at the end of the month the next meeting will be held in October.
Date: 4 October
Time: 11 AM
Host: Luis, our friendly host at Idol Marine :)
Once again food and drinks ill be provided. Address will be sent out at a later stage.
Luis has been through a bad spell with his tanks.. whitespot etc but everything is back to normal and the fish have recovered nicely. This is a great meeting for newbies to attend as Luis is very into his DIY and alot can be learnt from him and his great systems. Luis has propogation systems, scrubbers, greenhouse and lots more.
See you all on the 4th.

I came across this article and thought it might be useful to us all :)
I was watching the Weather Channel recently and they announced that hurricane season was now underway. The pundit warned of the potential problems that arise from these treacherous storms.
The one that stuck out to me? The loss of power.
Most people would regard a couple of hours without electricity as a minor inconvenience. Missing your favorite television program or having the milk spoil might be aggravating, but hey, life goes on.
To the aquarium hobbyist, a couple of hours without electricity can be devastating. Life may, in fact, not go on for some of our tanks inhabitants. This got me thinking: what other ways might Mother Nature wreck havoc upon our tanks to create a true aquarium emergency?
There are plenty, actually.
Earthquakes, tornadoes, thunderstorms and, of course, the aforementioned hurricanes can each potentially leave us high and dry. When you factor in system-related mishaps like disease, leaks/floods and equipment failure, it seems the only thing a responsible aquarist can do to manage these situations is to be prepared before the inevitable takes place.
DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME
Out of all the potential problems that can occur in our aquariums, many can be avoided.
First, use only high quality well-built equipment, starting with the aquarium itself. Buy from reputable tank builders who craft their aquariums with the proper glass/acrylic thickness. For marine and reef aquariums, verify that the adhesives are saltwater-safe.
Always take your time when designing and building a new aquarium system.
Make sure all your slip PVC joints are glued correctly; use Teflon tape on all threaded connections. A small leak can become a big problem if given the chance. Check the volume of your sump to ensure it will hold excess water in case the power fails and your return pumps shut off.
Whether youre buying a prefab stand, doing a DIY job or having one custom-built, be certain it will not only support your aquarium but also withstand some movement. Whether youre from "Earthquake Country, live near a rail line or have a nephew who needs to boost himself up for a better view, be sure your stand is stable and capable of enduring sudden unexpected movements.
After youve designed and setup your aquarium to withstand the elements, protect it by performing
routine maintenance. New aquarists tend to forget to clean pumps and powerheads periodically. Doing so will make them last longer, perform better and youll have the peace of mind that comes with knowing youve done your best to thwart any potential pump problems.
BE PREPARED
Hope for the best but always prepare for the worst. That little bit of preparation may turn what could have been a full-blown crisis into a minor snafu. To enroll in our aquarium prep school, get up-to-speed on what areas you need to be concerned about and then heed the advice that follows.
Leak/Overflow/Flood
Fact: fish need water to survive. So lets do all we can to keep our aquarium water inside our tanks instead of all over our living room carpet.
If you notice water leaking from your system, use
Mr. Stickys Underwater Glue to patch your aquarium or plumbing until you find a permanent solution. Although this is only a temporary fix, it should buy you a couple of days to find a replacement part. Of course, having replacement parts ready-to-go is the way to go.
Ball valves, check valves, bulkheads, unions and corresponding gaskets/o-rings are inexpensive so its a good idea to stock up.
In addition,
keep extra water on hand (fresh and salt). It can save the day!
Water Flow/Oxygenation

Water circulation is extremely important in the reef aquarium. It helps oxygenate the water and carries waste to filtration. If flow is stopped for even one hour the negative results can start to become apparent. That is why we recommend keeping extra pumps and pump parts in your aquarium toolbox.
But what happens if the power goes out altogether?
Invest in a quality pump like
EcoTech Marines VorTech with battery backup and your tanks flow will continue unaltered for up to 60 hours after the power goes out (30 hours for two pumps). Add a second
battery backup to double the run time.
A more economical solution is to have a
battery-powered air pump. The gentle current created by the air bubbles will help keep your tank inhabitants alive until power is restored. The downside is you will need to keep the air on in the tank all the time in case you lose power while you are away.
Disease
Illness in an aquarium can appear to come out of nowhere. When it does, there may not be time to wait for a shipment of
medication to arrive and administer before your fish are dead.
Ruby Reef and
SeaChem both offer a full line of aquarium medications. Experienced hobbyists have learned the hard way that keeping meds on hand is the best way to prevent illness from spiraling out of control since youll be able to react at the first signs of trouble.
Of course, preventing diseases from entering our aquarium in the first place is a habit all hobbyists should practice. Quarantine all new livestock for a minimum of two weeks to allow any latent disease to run its course. This period also gives your new pet an opportunity to become accustomed to captive life without harassment from other animals.
The
AccliMate XL is large enough to quarantine small fish. Just add a
heater to maintain temperature. When its time to add your new pet to your display tank, the
AccliMate makes it easy to do it the right way. The versatile AccliMate XL can also be used as a hospital tank. Combine with
Mr. Aquas UV sterilizer to kill disease and filter the water while your fish is separated from the healthy population.
What to do in an Emergency
Youve acquired all of the necessary equipment and taken all of the proper precautions. Now what?
Wait. Something
will happen.
As aquarists, the longer we practice this hobby the more likely it is Murphys Law will take effect. When it does, remain calm and follow these simple steps:
- Look for leaks and/or water spillage. Protect important electrical components from water.
- Reestablish water circulation within 15 minutes.
- If the lights are still on, turn them off to reduce stress to the animals. Your tank can survive for at least a week without lighting.
- Do not feed your tank while filtration and circulation are compromised. Your fish will be fine for 4-5 days without food.
- Do not panic. Do not make rushed decisions because they can lead to bigger problems.
- Never use unfiltered tap water to top-off an aquarium, even if its the only thing available. Take the time to filter with an RO unit.
It doesnt take a natural disaster to create an aquarium emergency. Oftentimes it is a simple loss of power or a minor plumbing leak that cause major problems. It is our own unpreparedness that sustains them.

Hi guys,
One can't really see on this photo, but two of my kenia trees tips started to turned white..
Also I don't really see allot of polyp extensions on that white parts any more - it is as if it's dying... :-(
Must I cut this, or leave it for another day to check if it's getting worse?
It's being like this now for 2-3 days....
Thanks

Hi all,
First of all, this is a great forum, I've been reading and learning a lot from other members.
I've been keeping a 2' nano reef tank for almost half a year now, and everything's been going very well.
I'm setting up a 2nd marine tank, but fish only, without live rock or coral.
Here's what the setup's like:
- standard 2' tank (bare bottom, without substrate)
- 2 power heads (with sponges)
- heater
- LO T5 lighting
Stock:
- 1 damsel (moved from reef cause getting big and territorial)
- will probably get 1 or 2 more similar fish
So what are the pros and cons with this kind of setup?
Will I get away just fine with this very simple setup?
Thanks in advance,
Steven

Thought some of the tech-heads would like this
Hi Guys/Gals
We are having a bit of fun at the expense of our favourite telecoms provider Helkom. Let me explain. We have satellite call centres which are connected via business ADSL’s to our main data centre. As usual these connections where very unstable and extremely slow. This caused a huge amount of frustration for us as we need to move voice logs(100’s of megabytes) a day up to our main databases for QA and legal purposes. Our company runs on sales and without voice logs we have no binding contract between us and the customer. So they are pretty essential.
Anyway I read a Aprils fools white paper about Avian carrier networks a couple of years ago. Basically it is a protocol that uses racing pigeons as a network layer. This got me thinking about how fast we can transfer the data by racing pigeon. I discussed this idea with my CIO one night having a couple of drinks. When we did the math we found out that we can transfer the data faster by pigeon for certain sites. So we made a project of it. Next week Wednesday is Pigeon VS ADSL day here at the unlimited world. We have the media involved so check the Sunday times for a article on this event.
Basically we will be flying a pigeon with a 4GB micro SD card from Howick to our central site in Hillcrest. We did a dry run yesterday. Here is the stats: Pigeon took 48 minutes to deliver the data. ADSL is still downloading. Telkom got hold of this via the media and is currently in a flat spin. We got a call from Telkom asking us for our circuit numbers so they can make sure we have good service.
Here is the best part. We spend +/- R 45000 a month just on rental for these lines. If we moved to the Avian Carrier Network we will be saving a whopping R 35 000 a month.
Check out the facebook group, do a search for Winston the pigeon on facebook. Also watch the local press for some tongue in cheek articles about our great Helkom.
Regards
Neil
PS: The Original White Paper is located here:
RFC 2549 (rfc2549) - IP over Avian Carriers with Quality of Service
Edit: Made a spelling mistake in the title would one of the MODs fix it please?

I finished my planning, started removing some of the ceramics and bio-balls,removed a pane of glass, now 2day i'm gonna buy the sand, wash it,and put it in the sump. Any further suggestions/advice on the thickness .of dsb(i was told about 10-15cm),i also have a few pieces of lr that i'm adding. The current lighting that i use in the sump is a Hopar unit, will it b sufficient,or should i improve, and what alternatives r there? In terms of adding snails & crabs, what else should i add,and the egg crate,is it a must, and what is it's purpose, and what should the rate of flow be? The size of the sump is 1500*500*500(overall size),size of dsb compartment, about 700*500*500. I will add pics as i move on.

Hi guys...
Okey, so after doing LOTS and LOTS of research, meetings and going back to the drawing board, I am VERY VERY proud to anounce the Marine Insurance Product has been approved by a leading insurer!!! :mbounce:
Some of you might know the previous premiums that was calculated, and some of you felt it was too expensive. Well, we have cut the cost heavily, so it really is VERY affordable.
I can not give you much more information at this stage, and please do not send me information through to quote on yet, as I am busy in discussion with the Admins wrt sponsorship on MASA etc. I can tell you however that the product is very exiting, and will give you some really nice benefits. There is nothing this specialized on specifically Marine Insurance in the world, so it is a huge learning curve for us insurance guys - we will need all the info we can from you.
What I need though, is a small survey from the members here. Please take part in this, I need to supply the information to the insurer by middle next week.
This is just for our statisctacal purposes:
Please indicate:
A) What do you want insured wrt most important equipment that you'd like replaced?
B) What losses do you want insured (bursting of tanks, lightning, mechanical breakdown etc)?
C) What do you recon is an affordable premium to insure you for the answers on the above?
D) **Not compulsory - What other type of cover would you want for your aquarium?
Thank you for your assistance thus far!!! As soon as I can roll out the product, you all will see it. It seems definite that we are going live 01 October 2009 with it!!! :whoohoo:

Was it me?;) Hey everyone what happened to the site or was it me again! Also either all the watches in my home are wrong or the sites clock is 1 hour behind!

Now for the next question- I am adding a 5000lt Jo Jo tank to the total water volume of my tank, meaning the total water volume will be around 9000lt.
I Would love to fill it with about 400mm of sand, stick a couple (:whistling:) of rock inside there and add some Plants, chaeto etc.
Question 1) What type of plants can I put into the system/jo jo drum to maximise the absorbtion of excessive nutrients.
Question 2) How will I go about the flow inside the Jo Jo Tank to be able to get maximum/minimum flow inside the tank for the plants to grow as well as to get detritus "all over" ?
Question 3) The water need to gravity feed back to the display tank, but with water coming into the Jo Jo at the top, and water running out from the top, it means that the water column at the bottom of the Jo Jo tank will not really "rotate" and flow back to the main display.
Will this be a good thing as; on the one side all detritus will float down and feed all critters, plants, bacteria,as well as live brine shrimp??? Or do I need to "stir" the water with a powerhead 24/7 (I do not really want any pumps inside the Jo Jo tank??
Bare in mind that the tank will have maximum sunlight from the top (it has a perspex lid)
-
I need to know this- so please guys and gals, give a solid answer and not a thought out answer...
What is the purpose of all the critters in ones sump, eg lice thingies, snails, crabs etc etc??? Do they not disperse of detritus too???.
I have read that ones flow over your sump area needs to be low(ish), but from experience I tend to disagree, as I had a huge return (obviously, whatever volume returns to your display in a given time frame, will return at the same speed back to your sump:whistling:)
And I never had issues with detritus- also keep in mind that my buffers on either side of my sand bed was cut high, so water never really flowed "over" the sand, and never "blew" out detritus from my display.
Please explain what happens with detritus in a well established tank (I am not talking about newly set up tanks that does not have a lot of bacteria and critters)
-
Happy birthday guys - Have a great day and may your'll see many many more!:happybday:

HI
Hope I do not get into trouble for this?
But Moolis if you are to busy to tell the guys on the forum of these beautiful clowns, I will do it for you;)
Pet Stop landed some normal (think he called them ocelaris?) and tomato clowns that are aqua cultured and they look absolutely FAB.
He did have a special on them as well - but for the life of me I can not remember what it was (think R60 each for 4 or more - but lets get him to tell us)
Now you have to post some photos Moolis! AND the prices + specials
-
hey, anyone know where he disappeared to ?

My tank has been going about seven weeks now and a bit of green algae was starting to become evident. On Sunday I decided to collect some snails to reduce the problem until the ATS kicked in properly.
I nipped off to Isipingo and quickly collected some candidates. The problem is, being new to the game (more is better) I ended up with a solution way too big for the problem.
5 x Turbos, 2 x topshells and about 8 nerites have dealt with 15% - 20% of the algae coverage in 48 hours.
I see they will have to be considered as being on short term contract. The best performers will be given permanent posts!
Seriously though, the tank is 1.1m x 0.6m x .5m, how much algae is considered acceptable when established and how about how many should I think of keeping? I suppose I could experiment until I get the right balance.

Is it possible to have too much flow over a DSB, I am moving 6000l/hr from the return, now do you think this is too much over a 100x45 DSB, my point in that most of the detrus going to the sump does not have a chance to settle on the bed?
-
What is the ideal water temp for mixed reef, and also what is the max sort of to run. I would think 25 and inmates would start sweating. I know FO and you could go a bit higher, but other wise what is ideal, and what is too warm?

Hi,
I have a question about Aptiasia.
To say that I have a plague of aptiasia is an understatement.
Hi really do have thousands of the little buggers.
At first I've tried to get rid of them. I've used from kalk to other commerial products.
To my frustration NOTHING worked succesfully! This little creatures are really hard to kill!.
I think I've done more damage to the nearby corals.
At this stage alot of the aptiasia is next to some of my corals, some even grow between my Zoa's.
And the funny thing is - I can't see ANY ill affect on my corals.
They still open fully, they still grow, they are happy!
The question now is - are the aptiasia really that bad?
I know that they are exelent filter feeders/filters.
Must I continue to remove them, or must I leave them be?
-
Hi everyone.
I recently installed another pl bulb in my tl-450 unfortunatley the only bulb i can find at the moment is 4000k. I cant really notice a big improvement in light so my question is will the extra bulb being only 4000k be benificial to my inhabitants? I spose it is an extra 18 watts?

I am looking for some advice on wave makers.
I haven't seen one in a shop yet and was wondering if it is possible to build your own and how to do it? (luckly my diy skills aren't to bad)
What advantaghes does a wave maker have in the tank?
Or were can I get more info on it?

Please can someone put up a close up pic of their sump. I have set mine up and not sure if I have done it right. I want to have a deep sand bed and a section for live rock. Should each section flow into the next without being able to run back?

Hi there, I have a Pincushion coral that has exploded in the last two weeks, now it's touching my purple Millepora, is this bad for the Millepora?

All
I have not posted lately, but I a a keen Marine enthusiast - learning every day. I have a 500l display, 200l sump with TS2 in-sump skimmer, chaeto, DSB, and small algae scrubber. Setup about 10 months old - all parameters looking good.
Some problems with aptisia, so I bought a Copperband three weeks ago. He took his time, but sorted out these pests slowly but surely. When I bought him, the LFS assured me that the copperband is being fed Artemia without problems. Unfortunately, I have not seen him take a single nip at these. At feeding time, he actually joins the action, swimming around between the food, but does not take any. He still looks very healthy, and is constantly browsing the reef. Also no bullies around, so he is very relaxed, and does not even hide or swim away when somebody approach the display.
I do not want to lose him - are there any suggestions on what I can try?
Thanks
Chris
