Hi all,
I got myself a 80w T5 electronic ballast and a giesemann actinic 03 tube - now how the hell do I hook it up.
I know that on the left side is the 3 inputs where the mains must come in - but what is the order of the "earth" "live" and "Neutral" wires. and on the right is the output side to the tube. On this side does it matter what way around the wires go - I know that the same to wires must go to one end of the tube, and the other 2 to the other end of the tube.

My friend has two big elephant ears and wants to try fragging one of them. I don´t know if you call this coral the same as we do, but here's a picture. Should we treat it as you would a mushroom, or a ricordea, or is it something completely different?

Johnny wanted to have sex with a girl in his office,
but she belonged to someone else...
One day, Johnny got so frustrated that he went up to
her and said, "I'll give you a R100 if you let me
have sex with you. But the girl said NO.
Johnny said, "I'll be fast. I'll throw the money on
the floor, you bend down, and I'll be finished by the
time you pick it up. "
She thought for a moment and said that she would have
to consult her boyfriend... So she called her
boyfriend and told him the story.
Her boyfriend says, "Ask him for R200, pick up the
money very fast, he won't even be able to get his
pants down."
So she agrees and accepts the proposal. Half an hour
goes by, and the boyfriend is waiting for his
girlfriend to call.
Finally, after 45 minutes, the boyfriend calls and
asks what happened.
She responded, "The bastard used coins!"
Management lesson:
Always consider a business proposal in its entirety before agreeing to it and getting screwed!

Looking for a reef octopus overflow. Must be for a good price as i'm still deciding between it and drilling the tank. Cape town.

I am in the process of buying a tank made out of 8mm starfire glass. I need to know if there is a special technique to drilling it as opposed to normal glass and if there is anyone near the Milnerton area in cape town who can do it for me. I'm willing to pay. Thanks Steve

You guys see the match on Saturday. I feel sorry for the boks, the boys are tired now, and need a break. The boys played 15/16 matches in the Super 14, then 6 or 7 in the tri nations, then another 9-10 in the currie cup, the guys have not had a break since the start of the super 14's. With us being current champs also, there is lots of additional pressure.
What really pissed me off, was the little ref on Saturday, he was worse than any piece of detrus, (like one of those fat green ones from a tang). he blew us for anything, and at any chance, and let Ireland do what they wanted. The reffing was disgusting!

Hey guys! Was busy cleaning my tank, picked up a piece of lr and felt a light prick on my finer. When I looked at my finger tip there were a few very fine 'hairs' stuck on it?! It doesn't hurt or anything, but I crapped myself lol! There were a couple of worms underneath the rock. Could it be a sting from one of these and should I be concerned?

hey guys
in the last few days I have had an explosion of algae. mostly brown stuff, but bits of red as well which looks like cyano to me.
i have been monitoring nitrates and phosphates, they are both minimal (nitrate 2.5ppm, and phosphate 0.1ppm). im not sure i trust the phosphate as the algae could be eating it.
possible sources that im aware of:
2 weeks ago i added a whole bunch of "dead" live rock - from a mate's old tank, had been sitting in his garage for a year.
last week i got a CBB - he's doing fine, but obviously ive started feeding marine mix with brine shrimp etc - feeding once a day, pellets and the shrimp. i might be overfeeding?
a few weeks ago i got a blenny, i havent seen in in a few days and he's normally very active. im wondering if maybe he has kicked it somehwere I cant see... but my nitrates have stayed low so im not sure.
im quite concerned as this algae has spread really fast and is looking mighty sif. I have chaeto above my dsb with a 45W warm white globe, however it has remained the same size since I got it aout 5 weeks ago.
on monday I had a mishap with my iodine - dosing bottle was resting on a brace while i was fiddling with stuff and... knocked it over...:whistling: did water change etc, ran carbon, all seemed fine after a day or so. also dosed some stability for two days afterwards as a lot of the bacteria died.
so - there coiuld be a lots of reasons why this is happening but if anyone can share any light, or offer advice it would be most appreciated.
last thing (and this is of the most concern) - this morning i noticed my clowns both have black spots on them! they are behaving normally, just with these little dots everywhere. help!???
-
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the advice thsu far. My anemone keeps moving around after a week or two. I have tried different spots in the tank but it does not seem to like it. I have tried dark and lighted areas. built caved areas for it and also buried it in the sand. nothing helps. it seems to be eating okay but just won't settle. I have had him for about three months now. also the clown are not interested in going near it.
any ideas?

I've been looking to upgrade to a proper Macro lense for my D40, yes I know it's old and entry level...it will be upgraded next.
I really want the Nikon 105mm VR but I dont want to spend THAT much.
I've looked at the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro and from what I've read it seems to be a really good lense at almost half the price of the Nikon.
Do you guys think it's worth spending the extra 4k on the Nikon Lense?

Hi all.
I have been noticing small (what looks like) anemone's ALL over ALL my tanks.
On the plants, on the rocks, on the substrate everywhere...
Strange thing is, they have four arms (tentacles) with sphere's at the ends.
I have searched online but cannot find any images that look like what i'm seeing.
They definately only have four tentacles.

They look a lot like this, just thinner and with only four tentacles...
Could they be a aiptasia? I seriously doubt it because of the round/sphere tips...
Could they rather be a bacteria than an anemone?
I have a nice big jewel anemone in my tank, but would it cause baby's to sprout all over the show?

Hi guys
I have been fighting a problem with nitrates for some time. Now in addition all hell seems to be breaking loose in my tank. Off perametres, red algae, hair algae and white slime bubbly algea.
I'll start when all the trouble began.
About 2 months ago a good friend gave me approx 12 hard corals varying from as big as a 10cent piece to the palm of your hand size(3 of)
My tank is a jewel 260 litre. It has its own canister-no sump etc. It has a prism hang on protein skimmer.
I was so excited to be getting the corals that I only realized as I was putting the corals in that this could be a problem and that I needed to keep an eye on the peramiters more closely due to the sudden increase of "life" in the tank.
The nitrates shot through the roof. I kept taking water to test at my LPS. I changed 50litres asap, the ph was a bit high and the salinity was high. I lost a groups of green ears, a large "cauliflower" softie. White bubble coral. I lost a butterfly fish also. The corals i was given are either shrinking or look like they are dying.
Unfortunately I was STUPID and didnt ask the names of the corals when they were given to me; I also didnt check on the requirements for them. I couldnt even tell if some are dead or alive because I dont know what they are supposed to look like. ROOKIE STUPIDITY
After about 2 weeks the salinity was fine as well as the ph and the phospates. I added phosphate remover matting to the canister.
Over the past 3 weeks I have changed 150 litres of water. The nitrates have dropped from off the chart to about 15ppm. I cant seem to get them lower. They are still too high. The corals I think are dying off. Last week I finally got 2 additional T5's working in my tank. I now have 4 x T5's(2 white and 2 actcintic).
The green algea and red algea are starting to go bonkers. There has also appeared in the space of 24 hours what looks like the red bubbly algea but it is WHITE. It is growing furiously.
Tank inhabitants are;
2 x shrimps
4 x hermit crabs
1 x large sand anenome 30cm diameter
1 x small sand anenome 4cm diameter
1 x 6 line wrasse
3 x damsels
1 x marron clown
1 x cleaner wrasse
1 x pajama cardinel
1 x radiant wrasse
1 x goldie
1 x algea eater
purple ears
cauliflower soft coral
approx 12 hard coral I dont know the name of.

Christmas is almost upon us so I thought that I would share one of my favourite Christmas recipes.
Jose Cuervo Christmas Cookies
1 cup of water
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup of sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup or brown sugar
4 large eggs
1 cup nuts
2 cups of dried fruit
1 bottle Jose Cuervo Tequila
Sample the Cuervo to check quality. Take a large bowl,
Check the Cuervo again, to be sure it is of the highest quality,
Pour one level cup and drink.
Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of butter
In a large fluffy bowl.
Add one peastoon of sugar. Beat again. At this point
it's best to make sure the Cuervo is still ok, try another
Cup just in case.
Turn off the mixerer thingy.
Break 2 leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup
Of dried fruit.
Pick the frigging fruit off the floor.
Mix on the turner.
If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaters just pry
It loose with a drewscriver.
Sample the Cuervo to check for tonsisticity.
Next, sift two cups of salt, or something. Who geeves
A sheet. Check the Jose Cuervo. Now shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts.
Add one table.
Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can
Find.
Greash the oven.
Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall
Over.
Don't forget to beat off the turner.
Finally, throw the bowl through the window, finish the
Cose Juervo and make sure to put the stove in the wishdasher.

What is the best suited fish to buy or catch for your tank, an adult or juvenile, and adjusts quicker to your tank and feed. I am more talking about your harder species to keep, like butterflies, idols, maderins etc. Say I see one in the LFS, both are in the same condition, do I go for the adult or the juvi?

Finally got the go ahead from the minister of finance (wife) to start on the new tank plans.
My current jebo marine-hack corner unit is doing fine except the wooden stand that's got some water damage.
I initially wanted to get a steel stand made, but decided with all the work that would needed to be done, might as well start fresh.
The plans are:
750X750x600 tank (10mm with 12mm base)
700x450x450 sump (4 compartments for skimmer, chaeto, dsb, return)
750X750X800 stand (32mm - 3mm)
250W MH + two 24W T5's
OR eight 24W T5's
Would have loved to go bigger than 750 for the tank, but needed to take the room's aesthetics into account.
Will be picking up the tank/stand/sump this weekend, God willing, after which the pics will begin rolling
This is going to be quite a lenghty build.
Will focus first on covering the stand in plywood and wrapping that in black graphite-looking TILES. Unit will have a single sliding door if possible.
(got the idea from
lastlight's 225 reef build - Reef Central Online Community)
Next will be a coffee table wrapped in the same tile
Then the hood (no tile, just black stain) and lights.
After which I will start with equipment and plumbing.
My current tank :
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Guys
Looking for some advice on internal circulation. My tanks dimensions are 1.7mx1mx0.6m. As the tank is being used as a room divider, the narrow side is up against a wall. This is the only side that I want pipes and electrical cables to be. My question is what pumps and what layout can I use to only have them mounted on that one side and still provide the correct circulation. It will be lps, nennies, polyps etc. I have laid one 25mm pvc pipe along the length in the middle of the tank, with a fair sizes powerhead, just to avoid a dead spot at the end of the tank. The whole set up is 2nd hand but would need to buy the internal circulation pumps and lighting.

Good morning there,
I have a real problem with long strands of green algae. My tank was initially covered in a brown furry stuff, diatoms i beleive, and now this. I removed it by sucking it up but it attaches to the rock and substrate very well. It needs to be broken off to get rid of the long strands. It grow at an alarming rate, 100mm in a few days. It covers everything directly below the lights. 150 watt MH,s. I tested water params last week and the only thing off was the Nitates which was at 25. I have no stock in the tank yet and need to start stocking as it's been running for 9 weeks now. Could it be as a result of the lighting or the type of lamp im using?

Any advise please.

So guys, as requested here are a few more pictures from the tank I had in Germany.
In August 2003 I filled this 5.500 litre reef aquarium. The whole system included filter, etc. had a volume of 7.500 litre.
The tank was made of reinforced concrete, the glass thickness was 31 mm. The size of the front screen was 3,1 m x 1,0m. The tank size was 3,2 m x 1,2 m.
The depth on the left side was 1,0 m and on the right 1,8 m. 2 pumps were pumping in total 48.000 litre per hour through the system.
I used 220 kg sea salt. 3 Aqua Medic metal halides with each 1000 W and 8 blue T8 58 W tubes were used for lighting.
I brought around 1000 kg dry reef rocks and a few hundred litre coral sand into the tank. It took me almost 3 years to finish the project. Why I left this beautiful tank behind me, is another story.
This picture was taken in March 2004, when the tank was a half year old. The visible size of this picture is around 3,0 m x 1,0 m.

A few pictures from the aquascaping.
Mixing the salt became a challenge. We set up a swimming pool in the garage, 5 metre in diameter, to mix 220 kg salt with tapwater. Tapwater in Germany is better than RO water, because it contains already 120mg calcium per litre. As a master plumber with his own business, I always could get the latest water analysis from the supplier. They check the water daily, so I had on paper, what is going to be in my tank.
Two Aqua Medic skimmer with each two oceanrunners. Sams got the same skimmer running in his shop.

Hello Sara and everyone in South Africa!:wave2:
There is a growing belief in the hobby that cutting any host anemone in two is a viable means of propagation. This has had me very concerned, so I e-mailed Dr. Daphne Fautin. I thought I would share what she had to say with our fellow reefers across the pond. This is what she had to say.
"To prevent taking animals from the wild, some well-intentioned people propose cutting sea anemones in pieces to propagate them artificially. I am astonished how often I receive such proposals! It appears that only (or nearly only) anemones that naturally divide will predictably survive this treatment. Despite a persistent belief otherwise, anemones of most species do not reproduce asexually: only two of the 10 species that are natural hosts to anemonefishes do, and that may be a pretty good estimate of the prevalence of that ability among all anemones - 20% of species.
Perhaps the myth that division is how anemones reproduce is due in part to the feeling that anemones are "primitive" and division is a "primitive" attribute (in fact, anemones have been on earth far longer than humans, so can be argued to be more evolved!), and in part because pests such as *Aiptasia* are many peoples' ideas of a "typical" anemone. In fact, they are so prevalent and common precisely because they have that unusual ability - most of the 1000 or so species of anemones are less conspicuous because they do not occur in such densities at least in part because they lack that ability.
Another possible source of the misconception about anemone division is the practice of fragging corals. Clearly anemones and scleractinian corals are closely related. But that does not mean they can be treated identically. All anemones are solitary (even those that divide separate entirely once they have formed separate bodies, whereas polyps of corals in a colony remain physically attached to one another after they have arisen asexually). So fragging is dividing colonies (groups of polyps) into smaller colonies (fewer polyps per piece). By contrast, cutting an anemone into pieces is analogous to cutting you into two or more pieces; and for anemones of most species, the result would be precisely the same -- we would not have numerous identical yous, we would have no you.
Associated with an ability in some anemones to divide (into two or many pieces, depending on the species) is an ability to heal; obviously healing is necessary for regeneration. And although the reverse is not necessarily the case, it seems that animals that do not normally divide also have poor healing ability. So the prospects are dim for propagating anemones of species that do not naturally divide by cutting them into two or more pieces. One person who wrote to me rather triumphantly with a proposal to reduce collection from nature by cutting anemones in pieces as a means of artificial propagation was so pleased because he had cut in half two anemones of a species that does not reproduce asexually (as I recall, it was a species of *Stichodactyla*), and although both halves of one had died, both of the other had survived. So he started with two and ended with two, each half as large as the originals. I failed to see promise in this approach.
And even for the two species of anemonefish host anemones that seem to divide in nature, differences from place to place make me think there may be more than one species of what we think is a single species of each or there may be differences among individuals. Thus, even an anemone that is thought to be able to propagate asexually (*Entacmaea quadricolor*, the bubble-tip, and *Heteractis magnifica*, the "Ritteri" anemone) may die from being cut up.

Contemplating going bigger but I am not convinced.
What were/are the overwhelming factors to consider before going bigger?
When I say big I mean 4, 5, or 6 foot max.
I dont want to be restricted by the size of the fish but will mainly be a highly stocked coral tank, the works.
Anyone feel to give your own input on this matter.
Space is a problem and this tank will be in the garage linked to a propagation tank.
Thank you for you input.
PS. I think that I am not convinced as it is almost year end and dont want to tackle something new. But I can start getting things together for the New Year. Have a nice 4 foot lined up at the moment, but will need a lot of work.

Wayne here, i am the new and improved version of Michaelb, & Dean76. (youngest brother)
Also just started out with my first tank... Very exciting stuff! Have started small (damn Budget) but eager to learn all i can...

The export of live rock originating from Tonga has ceased, and unfortunately there will no longer be Tonga Branch Rock, Tonga Slab Rock
i am glad they finally clamping down on the natural stuff, and forcing the aqua-cultured LR to be made and sold.

hey guys
interesting problem with my mushrooms. the purple ones I got a few weeks ago are flourishing, they have literally tripled in size. About 10 days ago I got another rock with some green shrooms on it, and they have basically stayed the same size. The rocks are next to each other in a low flow area, so I'm not sure why one would flourish and the other not?
Water prams are perfect.
these guys are hundreds
these green ones have stayed like this for over a week.

Morning all. I would like to know where are the best Marine fish shops in JHB? I stay on the East Rand. Thanks

Hi guys and girls.
To continue on a previous post about starfish, i thought Id start a new one around the harlequin shrimp.
A lot is said online about these creatures only taking sea stars as those are it's natural foods.
I fed mine sea stars too, and they quite happily consumed them.
I keep my sea stars in a tank next to theirs with an overflow from the one to the other.
After 2 weeks, i noticed them getting excited and was "hunting".
But this time, i decided to move the sea star to my refrigium so they cannot smell it that well.. I then wanted to test alternative foods
I have removed the sea star from the neighbouring tank yesterday afternoon, and placed it in the refrigium.
I have then thrown a muscle, a piece of Crabstick and a piece of Hake into the harlequin tank.
This morning, the hake was a 10th its original size and was right by the harlequin's cave.
So potentially, this is good news.
The harlequins share their tank with a very small 3cm watchman goby, and one small hermit crab.
There is no way the hermit and goby could have eaten the hake that much so Im almost quite sure that harlequins takes fresh hake when they cannot smell a sea star and they are hungry.
I'll try this again with the goby and hermit removed from thier tank to make sure.
Please note that i'm not saying you should feed harlequins hake only... It's just an alternative to thier natural diet which i'm sure they still need to consume once in a while.
If it is them that takes the hake, i'll try other fish as well.
It could also be that the hake i gave them in the past was too small. They seem to prefer a blob of food that is at least as big as them, or slightly bigger. But, size may not have been the issue as much as the close proximity of the seastar was.
I'll continue my research and keep you guys up-to-date because i beleive that if we can rather feed them mostly hake than starfish, so much better.
Lemme kow if you guys do actually want to be kept up-to-date with this.

I may be barking up the wrong tree, but here goes. I added an algae scrubber to my system about two months ago. Rest of the system - 500l display, 240l sump, skimmer, DSB, lots of chaeto.
The algae scrubber working very, very well, and main display clean as can be - no algae, etc.
My problem is that is seems as if my softies, especially my 4 types of mushroom seems to be less healthy than before the scrubber. Much smaller, less extended. Can this be because of operation of the algae scrubber, maybe starving the mushrooms of certain food elements?
I am no expert, only being in this hobby for about 18 months, and would appreciate any comments or assistance.
Kind Regards
Chris

So, when installing a DE MH light bulb its always been said that you need to place a piece of 4-6mm glass below it to shield out the harmful UV light, I've even advise this to others, but is this true?
The reason I ask it because I've just built a UV exposure box for making PCBs, it uses 2 small 6w UVC bulbs, peaking about 350nm if I'm correct. The light has to travel through 2 pieces of 4mm glass (8mm total) before hitting a UV sensitive material, and guess what, it reacts extremely well. So that would mean that the light has no problem going thought the glass!
So does the glass actually do something or are we mistaken? Found this on WIKI, it seems only glass with "Cerium(IV) Oxide" can absorb UV.
[/quote
while cerium(IV) oxide can be used for glass that absorbs UV wavelengths (biologically damaging ionizing radiation).[quote]
Can anyone advise explain?:whistling:

Hi guys
I have a ReefOcto TS1. I need your advice on one or two issues.
1) The skimmer is making it's small air bubbles, but every second or so it makes a big "blump" noise and a bigger bubble in between the rest. I have two pipes from the overflow running into that compartment, and Lanzo suggested that the pump is sucking in bigger bubbles from there; but even if I move the skimmer away from there, it still does that. I have turned the skimmer on it's head, yet it still doses this. Is this a problem and if so, how do I fix it?
2) I REALLY need to get this skimmer to work like a demon... I am feeding Cyclop-Eeze, Phyto and Zoo three times a day, but the skimmer is really just making the inner tube of the cup "dirty"... I do not have much fish, only three Firefish and my tank is a 280litre system, but still, you'd think with all the feeding it would skimm like crazy.
How could I make it skimm better? I have seen the mod thread, but have no idea of what the hell that person is talking about.:P I currently have the TS1 submerged in flat on the sump floor at about 23cm depth of water. Would lifting it up help anything?
Please give me some advise...

Hi Guys
Has anyone managed to get the lumens value on Reeftek T5's specifically the 10000k 54w bulbs. I've read through a few posts, notably Jaco Schoeman's on the some of the different t5's, but no references to the Reeftek globes. Anyone got more info. Shot ;)

Hey Guys
I started my iodine dosing regimine last night - as I dont yet have a test kit, the plan was to dilute 20mL into 100mL RO water and then add 20mL at a time once a week. I did this last night, added my 20mL, then afterwards I was fiddling with the tank and the container with the rest of the solution was resting on one of my bracings. You can guess what happened next.
Bumped it over by accident, spilling the whole lot into the tank (total water volume is 400L). Immediately ALL my corals closed up. Luckily I had a 20L bucket with salt water on had, did an immediate change. As the evening progressed the corals started opening up again and looking happier. Went to bed a bit worried but hopeful.
This morning everyone is looking happy, colours are fine and everyone is open. However the tank is MURKY! and seems to be getting murkier. Did a quick ammonia and nitrate test and they're both fine. Could this be related to the iodine? I am planning on getting 50L of water after work today to do another change, what else could I do?
Thanks

If I want to reduce the cycle time on a new tank, would it work if I use rock from a running tank, and use sand from that DSB and even substrate. I have loads of LR in the sump of my existing set up, an d was hoping to basically start it up with left overs from the current tank.

Hi guys, for all the people that doesn´t know me, my name is Marcel. I am German, not proud of it, but that is a fact.
I live in Cape Town now for three years and started in the beginning of this year with a small breeding set up. This set up is now a bit bigger and is going to be very big next year.
I had at IMACSA 2009 my speech, my first speech ever and in English. I was so nervous, but I managed that part well. I was told so!;)
My albino clowns were shown to the public for the first time. I donated four of my albinos to the Two Oceans Aquarium for their exhibition.
Thanks to Trevor Kessel for taking this picture and my avatar as well.
If you want to know something, feel free to ask.

Howdy,
I've build my sump last week and been water-testing since Friday, all went well until tonight,
I moved the water to the last compartment for testing and.....a leak:(.
About 1/3 from the top on one of the outside corners.
I can see the pin-hole where the water exit on the outside but I cant find the problem on the inside.
Now, do I just put silicone over the existing join or must i strip the corner and re-silicon it from bare glass?
And what about the spot where the fresh and hard silicone meet, wont it then leak at that point?

Hi Guys,
I have a picasso trigger, currently it's in my sump (it has a square 50l swimming space so is happy in the meantime), will he be reef safe in that he wont touch my cleaner shrimp, starfish or hermits, or hassle any of the other fish, or if problems can be expected.
I want to start another tank, for non reefsafe fish, also I find I am always swopping/catching/giving away etc lots of nice fish, ideally it will be an office tank. It will take obviously a few weeks till it's set up and cycled. Is there any risk at all if I gooi him in the big tank, also I was thinking of going about a 150-200l tank, will this be big enough for him, especially as they are a dwarf species, do they grow much at all.

Hi members
Please note that I am taking the big plunge and getting married on Saturday 28 November!!!! :whistling:
I will be out of office from coming wednesday for about a week and a half.
Also:
We are unable to take on any "brand new" policies from now untill 15 Jan 2010. This means that anybody that does not have a current insurance policy in place with another insurer can not take cover untill 15 Jan, but those that does have current cover will be able to change over and take up marine insurance. I am busy with a few of the member's insurance policies, and they are still welcome to go on cover!!!! ;););) hint hint wink wink...
Thank you guys for your support once more. Also glad to mention we have been running for about one month now and no claims yet!!!

Hi guys,
I posted this here as I wasn't sure what the appropriate part of the forum would be. I hope that this thread doesn't fall foul of the commercial posting rules... if it does Mods please close.
I was thinking of offering a reefsitting/ housesitting service over December/ early January as I've just finished my honours degree and am looking for something relatively slow-paced and interesting to do that also earns some cash over this time-period. I need a break after working and finishing a thesis!
I have about four years reefkeeping experience - so not a noob, but you never stop learning in this hobby! I will post some pics/ a movie of my tank so you guys can see that I will take good care of your tanks etc. Obviously I would also take care of your other pets (I draw the line @ pet crocodiles/ parktown prawns) though
So who is interested? I still have to decide on a rate to charge etc...will speak to my friends who do housesitting and see what's to ask... also if anyone has suggestions feel free to post!
I'm situated in JHB in the Edenvale area. please pm me if you are interested and I will send you my contact details etc.
Thanks guys :peroni::)

Hey
Just the other day I watched a story on national geographic about zoo animals that have been neglected in the old days... The interesting thing is that the animals with to small cages and little or no enrichment did the same action over and over and over, like running down the fence and back for 6 hours. I'm just curious but wouldn't this bevior also work in the aquarium like if the fish isn't happy he would swim up and down the glass for hours? If this is true then maybe it's a good way to see how happy your fish really is in an aquarium. I think this is true because I had a powder blue tang in a 180 litre tang to let him grow for my 700 litre display. He was in the tank for 5 months and always when I came into the room he would swim under the rocks and sircle back to the glass and swim under the rocks again and so on and so on, but when I added him to the big tank he swam totaly differant and never repeated an action...

Hi all,
The tank is finally up and running (Boyu LT550)
I went shopping today and bought the LR, crushed coral and SEIO 350.
I have left the back of the tank stock standard for now. Just one question...
I keep on reading that I should remove the bioballs and ceramic rings. Should I put anything in its place in this tank? I suppose its better to make the changes now, considering the tank has only been running for 1 day.

Hi Hennie!
I need some advice on how to build an effective, yet reasonably cost efficient, DIY sump top-up device.
The commercial models out there are around R 600 a piece & I cannot afford one
at this moment.
I am going on a business trip for about a week & I am worried about the amount of
water that is going to be lost due to evaporation.
Cheers,
Costa.

Helooo all reefers,
Looking for some good advice on the following. Is there any reason why skimmers are run in the first chamber and not in the last with the return.
Looking at a sump setup with 3 chambers. IN - DSB - RETURN. Won't you get a better
and faster established DSB if you move the skimmer to the last chamber with the return. I'm seeing it like this. A skimmer in the 1st chamber before the DSB will skim out a lot of beneficial material that may be good for the DSB's growth and 'performance'. Also, if you have micro algae on top of the DSB. Will it not help in better growth resulting in better breakdown of toxins?

Hi all.
Would it not be benificial to have a few Dolomite rocks in an aquarium/sump?
I mean, the Gautrain project has big issues with Dolomite so where they are constructing close to centurion, dolomite should be readily available....

I have all my old crushed coral lying around, would it not be better if I put over the DSB, so that it can trap some of the nitrates and let the DSB work it easier. The way I see it, right now any waste is flowing over the DSB, and can't really settle on it. Now if there was crushed coral, it could easily trap some of the detris, and work it from there.
Would it work and you guys agree or am I talking skimate. Just a thin layer.

Hi all.
I notice small little snails and white goggas (too small to see what they are) eating my macroalgea (i think it is sea leattuce..
[www.arkive.org] ) on my newly aquired live rock.
How do i get rid of them?
I have a whole small tank dedicated to my new live rock with the plants on it.. No use snails polishing the plants..
:-(
I can take the rock out and try and catch them all with tweasers, but geeez... Is there a fish that will eat small snails (about 1mm in diameter)

hey guys just a quick question
i have a power head that has a join in the cable want to use it on new tank to create circulation at the bottom of the tank and the join will be submersed in water
so my question is how can i seal it that it doesn't get wet and shock the shiiat out of me?

Any one had any experience with these little guys? I found like 3 or 4 in my sump in the refugium...very small, but quite cute little things. Anyway have read they are excellent algae eaters and herbivorous so no worries with the corals it seems, but cant find out what size they get to etc... anyone know anything?
-
I have 90 kilos oolotic/playsand in my middle sump. I intend doing it on one afternoon, around when I do my water change.
1. switch return pump off.
2. siphon the sand out.
3. sponge down and clean sump properly.
4. fill the gap/volume left in the sump area with prepared water.
5. continue with normal water change regime.
All this would take me less than hour.
I'm currently dosing Prodibio and been on the NeoZeo method for the last 8-6 weeks respectively.
Any comments ito 'side effects' in doing it all in one go?
Anyone perhaps done this in the past, that can share experiences following this?

Hi guys,
So, after a couple of months reading posts and gathering as much information i want to share my setup with you guys.
Tank has been running for just under 6 months.
Tank volume is around 360L with +- 100 L sump.
Dim are 1200x550x550 with corner overflow.
Sump i have a TS3 skimmer, small DSB and return pump. 10L auto top up which i fill twice a week.
In the display tank i have 4 x Seio pumps, and for the lights i have 2 X T8 38W white and 2 X T5 blue. i will upgrade the T8's one day.
I had a bad case of white spot in the tank, and lost all my live stock. SO at the moment i am in my 3rd week of running my system with out fish. going to leave it this way for another 3 weeks just to try get end the cycle.
Testing of my water i do once a week,
KH - 9
Ca - 450
Mg - 1400 (a little high i think)
Salt - 1023/4
Temp - 26/27'C
I got roughly 45Kg live rock in the display tank with agronite. the rest is sand stone.
Ok, now for some pics. Comments welcome.:) dont think they really in order, but you'll get the general idea:thumbup:

Can anyone help with an extension / longer cable for a Polario ML 22. The one from the pump to controller ?
Thanx
-
Hi guys
This has probably been covered before, but since a lot of new guys have joined I thought I would just bring up the issue again.
Please make sure you have the right info before heading down to the coast and just taking things from the pools. Almost a year ago I was at the coast with a few people and some brought back some LR...I didnt say anything cause I didnt know it was illegal , same goes for a lot of other stuff.
Just getting a permit from the post office will not guarantee not getting a fine ....or even worse !
Rather BEFORE planning your trip, phone the local authorities (you might hold on for a while :P) and find out what you are allowed to do, what permit you would need , where you can / can't etc. Especially our inland guys
Our coastline should be monitored and preserved and I think we are a huge link in the educational chain.
BTW it goes the same for when you want to buy that piece of fish when on holiday (streetvendor or restaurant). Check this out for more info:

Hey guys,
Found some very useful info I think a begginer may need! Maybe it can be a sticky
SETTING UP YOUR SYSTEM
Tank Placement
things to think about
1) Accessibility: Wherever you place your tank, keep in mind that you will need to be able to access the tank easily and regularly. You will also likely have to hang things off the tank, hang lights over the tank (often from the ceiling), have tubes and pipes running off and to the tank, etc. It's wise to make sure that you can in some way (either by hand or with tongs) reach every inch and corner of the inside of the tank. If you have the room, you will not regret placing your tank such that you can walk (or squeeze your way) around all sides of the tank.
2) Viewability: Aside from wanting to be able to view your tank for pleasure and entertainment, you will need to be able to watch and observe your reef on a daily basis. There is an advantage to being able to see into your tank from as many angles as possible. However, for asthetic or practical reasons, you may have to block view through the back or side panels. That's ok. However, it's wise to leave at least two panels of glass through which you can view the inside of the tank.
3) Electrical Outlets: You will be surprised how many outlets you will end up needing. Just to start, you will need one or two for your lights, one for the protein skimmer, 2 or 3 for power heads and other pumps and one for the heater. That's 5 to 7 outlets just for the basics. Make sure that these outlets are very quickly and easily accessibly.
4)Floods: You can pretty much assume that you will at some point (if not at several points), spill several gallons of water on the floor around the tank. The larger the tank, the larger your spills will be. Most floors in reasonably modern homes and apartments can take a little water. Regardless, you might not want to place your tank on your $30k antique Persian rug unless you're ok with it getting a little wet.
5) Weight: Water is heavy. Some older homes aren't structurally capable of taking the weight of a very large tank. For tanks 50g or less, weight is not usually a concern. However, before planning on a 100+ gallon tank, please consult a surveyor or your landlord as to if your floor is strong enough for such a tank.
Equipment Placement
inside the tank, hang-on-tank, and external
It's a good idea to consider the layout, shape of, and space available in your tank before selecting your equipment. Somewhat contrary to intuition, smaller tanks tend to use more in-tank or hang-on-tank equipment options, while larger tanks tend to use more external equipment options. This is because the external equipment is usually designed to see larger volumes of water and often require an external sump for operation.
Some general tips:
1) Place heaters (and/or chiller coils) in areas of high flow so that heated (or cooled) water is dispersed quickly throughout the tank.
2) Place intakes/feeds away from their corresponding outtakes/overflows. For example, point or place the intake of a canister filter away from the outtake of the same canister filter (this helps make sure that the same filtered water isn't continually going through the same filter).
3) Place your protein skimmer so that it's easily accessible. You'll want to be able to reach and empty the skimmer cup regularly.
4) Experiment with powerhead placement. Figuring out where powerheads (and other sources of water flow) should be placed always requires a bit of trial and error. This may take some time and patience. For more information on water flow,
5) If necessary, it might be good idea to use extension cords to keep outlets and electrical plugs away from the tank so that they don't get wet.
Accessibility is always preferred. However, space might be limited or aesthetic concerns may motivate you to try and hide certain pieces of equipment. Finding the best compromise between these concerns may take some thought and experimentation. Your local aquarium store and other aquarists might also be able to give you some suggestions and ideas.
Aquascaping
arranging live and base rock
Note: Live rock is just want it sounds like (more or less). It's rock that is taken from the ocean and kept wet when you buy it. It is full of bacteria and other desirable life for your tank. Base rock is usually any rock safe for a reef tank that is not live rock. It's not necessarily rock that serves as a base for anything, it's simply that "base rock" is a more pleasant name than "dead rock."
There aren't too many rules when it comes to aquascaping. Contrary to popular myth, there's no rule about how much live rock or base rock you need. How much rock you should have will depend on your personal preference, what kinds and how much coral you want to keep, what kinds and how many fish you want to keep, the size and shape of your tank, etc. However, there are some things you should think about when purchasing and arranging your base or live rock:
1) Water Flow: placing rock up against the walls of the aquarium tends to limit water flow throughout the tank. Large "walls" and piles of rock also inhibit water flow. However you arrange your rock, try to place it such that water can move around it.
2) Caves: Caves can help with water flow and also give fish and other mobile inverts places to hide and sleep.
3) Live Rock is Better: If there is one "rule" in aquascaping, it's that live rock is better than base rock. Live rock adds to your biological filter. It comes with bacteria and reef critters that add to the ecosystem of your tank. Though live rock is not an absolute must, it's a very good idea. If you have a mix of live rock and base rock, over time, the base rock will eventually become live rock.
3) Too Much Rock: You can have too much rock. Remember that the more rock there is in your tank, the less room and the less water there is in your tank. It's always best to start with less rock (probably no more than 1/6 the volume of your tank) and add more later if you want/need it.
Note: You can measure the approximate volume of a piece (or pieces) of rock by measuring how much water it displaces when submerged. Submerge the rock in water and measure the vertical distance the water rises. Multiply the distance the water rises by the area of the footprint of the tank or container to get the total volume of water displaced by the rock.
CHEMISTRY
Salinity:
Salinity is a measure of how much salt (NaCl - sodium chloride) is in the water. The salinity of natural sea water varies by ocean, sea and reef, but is usually near 1.027 specific gravity or ~36 ppt. The two most common instruments to measure salinity are the refractometer and the hydrometer. Reef tank salinity should be maintained between 1.025 and 1.027 s.g. or 34 and 36 ppt. Refractometers are well worth the modest investment. They are easier to read and maintain. Although hydrometers can be accurate if diligently maintained, most aquarists do not have this kind of patience. They quickly lose accuracy when poorly kept and end up having to be frequently calibrated to a refractometer.
pH:
The concept of "pH" is complex and varies depending on the context in which it is discussed. Most simply put, it's a measure of the acidity (or bascicity) of a solution. Solutions with a pH <7 are called "acidic" while those with a pH >7 are called "basic." The pH of natural sea water varies throughout different marine environments (different oceans and seas), but is almost always basic to some degree or another. Reef tank pH should be maintained between 8.1 and 8.6. pH in a reef tank will fluctuate throughout the day (rising during the day and falling at night). pH test kits come in many different brands and types. All will likely work just fine. "pH pens" (digital pH monitors) are quite helpful, especially to new aquarists. Low pH is most often caused by poor aeration, high indoor CO2 levels, and/or low alkalinity levels. Poor aeration can be remedied with more water flow and turbulence at the surface of the water. Protein skimmers and overflows might also help with aeration. If your indoor CO2 levels are high, dosing of limewater (kalkwasser solution) can help.
Calcium:
Reef tanks need calcium (not just for stony corals but for many soft corals and other reef critters too). Natural sea water has a calcium concentration of 410 to 420 ppm. However, this is a generalization. Calcium levels differ by sea and area of the world and your tanks needs will depend on what type of corals you are keeping. If you are keeping fast growing stony corals (such as Acropora, Montipora, etc.) you should strive to keep your calcium levels at 410 to 420 ppm. However, if you are keeping slow growing stony corals (such as Fungiidae, Faviid, etc.) or soft corals, calcium levels as low as 350 ppm are usually acceptable. Reef tank calcium should be maintained to at least 350 ppm (and at 410 to 420 ppm for tanks with faster growing stony corals). Calcium levels can be too high. High calcium levels bring down alkalinity. It's difficult to have a calcium concentration of 450 ppm or higher while also maintaining sufficiently high alkalinity. Imagine that calcium and alkalinity are on opposite ends of a teeter-totter. When one goes up, the other goes down (and vice versa). You can raise your calcium with CaCl, Ca(OH)2 (aka kalkwasser), or with a calcium reactor. Please see below for information on alkalinity.
Buffers and Alkalinity:
Buffers help protect your aquarium water against sudden changes in pH. The ability of the buffer to prevent sudden changes in pH is called a "buffer capacity." As the term is usually used in the hobby, alkalinity can be thought of as one measure of the buffer capacity of our aquarium water.Chemical compounds called "bicarbonate" (i.e. baking soda) and "carbonate" are the major contributors to alkalinity. They're not the only contributors, but in our tanks, they're by far the most important. They're also what is usually tested for in alkalinity test kits sold in the aquarium hobby. For more information the other contributors to alkalinity and buffer capacity. Reef tank alkalinity should be maintained between 2.5 and 4 meq/L (or 7 and 11 dKH). It's important to note that while alkalinity can *help* your tank resist changes in pH, buffers can be "broken" if pH rises or falls too much too quickly. Therefore it remains important to monitor pH so that it does not fall too fair out of acceptable range. The most common way to raise alkalinity is with baking soda or a commercially sold reef aquarium buffer product.
With calcium <300ppm and alkalinity 0 to 6 meq/L (0 to 17 dKH) :
This imbalance is usually caused by over-dosing buffers. To correct this problem, add calcium chloride slowly. It's very important to test the water before and after every dosing. Do NOT use kalk to correct this problem.
With calcium 300-400ppm and alkalinity 1 to 2 meq/L (3 to 6 dKH):
In this situation both your calcium and alkalinity are on the lower side. Dosing kalk solution and/or some brand of 2-part calcium/buffer solution should solve the problem.
With calcium >450ppm and alkalinity >4 meq/L (>11 dKH):
When both calcium and alkalinity are too high, all you have to do is refrain from adding any calcium or buffer supplements and wait for the problem to correct itself.
With calcium >450ppm and alkalinity <2.5meq/L (<7 dKH):
When calcium levels are too high and alkalinity too low, dose baking soda (if pH is normal) and/or washing soda (if pH is low) to correct the problem.
Note: For 50 gallons of water: 1 teaspoon baking soda will raise alkalinity ~0.4 meq/L (~1.25 dKH). 1 teaspoon of washing soda will raise alkalinity ~0.6 meq/L (~1.75 dKH).
Temperature:
Most corals sold in the aquarium industry are from the Caribbean or Indo-Pacifc. These are warm, tropical reefs. Therefore, unless you know that your reef inhabitants are from colder waters, most reef aquariums should be kept at 78F to 84F.
Interactions
As you will come to experience, pH, calcium and alkalinity interact with each other. As mentioned previously, high alkalinity results in lower calcium levels and vice versa.Because of this, calcium and alkalinity must be measured at the same time and adjusted with respect to each other. Too much or too little of one is often a sign that the other is too low or too high respectively. Low pH can, though is not always, a sign of low alkalinity. It can also be a sign that the water is not being airated adequately. When your tank's water chemistry is not right in some respect, you may have to do some problem solving to figure out 1) what's causing the problem and 2) how to correct it.
When adjusting water chemistry:
1) Go gradual: Don't try to correct an alkalinity level of 1 meq/L or a calcium level of 380 ppm overnight.Alkalinity should not be raised or lowered any faster than ~1meq/L per day and calcium adjusted no more quickly than +/-40 ppm per day. This is especially important since, remember, these two parameters interact with each other. Raising your alkalinity too fast could cause your calcium too plummet too quickly (and vice versa). Whenever you're adjusting alkalinity or calcium, be sure to monitor the other as well.
2) Test diligently: Always test the water before and after you act so that you know what you need to do next (if anything).
3) Observe: Pay attention to any patterns in your water chemistry. For example before fretting over high or low pH, take the time to measure your pH several times over the course of a day or two (test it in the morning, afternoon and night-- before the light comes on, while it's on and after it's off). It is normal for pH to swing in a range as wide as 8.0 to 8.6 over the course of a day (peeking at "noon" and falling at night).

I've got 3 cube fishtanks collecting dust in my bedroom and they need to go. I picked it up from a past deal for anther tank. They are not in the best of condition(Edges are chipped and i havnt tested for leaks) The dimensions are 50Lx45Wx40H (5mm), wish i had the time and money to sort them out. Hopefully some one else can put them to better use.

HIGH IMPORTANCE
This is a blanket warning to all citizens of Kwazulu Natal and the South-Eastern coastal regions of South Africa.
A tempestuous cyclone (Roberta) was sighted just off the West coast of Madagascar at approximately 17h00, is moving Eastbound at a rate of 32 knots. When first observed, it was thought that Cyclone Roberta would dissipate once it met with the higher pressure cells towards the South-East. However, due to the unforeseen ebbing pressures we have seen off the Southern African coast since early this morning, the cyclone is unlikely to abate.
Please be forewarned that the Southern and South-Eastern regions of South Africa, particularly Kwazulu Natal, will in all probability experience the most violent winds and thunderstorms to date. It is strongly recommended that residents of Kwazulu Natal seek secure shelter. The cyclone is thought to hit our coast at approximately 15h30 today, 19th november We urge everyone to take every possible measure to seek secure refuge again this heavy weather pattern.

I bought an assorted mushroom rock a few weeks back. I was told it was very hardy. the mushrooms seem to be dying off. I am not sure they are mushrooms they look more like round leaves. It started with one the other day and now 2 or three more don't look to healthy. My Water is great there is no ammonia or anything and ph is at 8.
I am not sure if it has to do with light. I have 2 globes. 1x12000k and 1 actinic. My tank is not very deep its a bout 450mm deep. I can post a pic tonight. i was just wondering if there is something i might be missing. All the other fish and stuff look fine. I have no other coral only live rock, a cleaner shrimp, yellow tail damsel, tube worm, turbo snail and goby.
Thanks

Hi All,
Need to find out quickly. If I need to set up a tank just for live rock only, what would the munimum requirements be?
I was thinking
- Tank

So I have been wanting a new tank for some time now. After hours and hours of going through threads I have decided that I would like a 60x60x40cm cube…… but not any old cube, something that is capable of sustaining pretty much any inmate I choose to house. The hunt was on for my perfect tank.
There are of course some pretty amazing companies out there who can make some spectacular tanks, but I simply cannot afford the prices they are asking for this sort of tank. I eventually found a new company who while they have many years experience in marines, are only just starting to convert this experience into a commercial venture. We are working very closely together to design my dream tank.
Some more info about the tank.
60cm x 60cm 40cm (LWH)
3 sides viewable with starphire glass
10mm all round rimless
Black silicone
1m high stand
MH lighting
Custom Sump incorporating Skimmer, DSB, Auto top up, heater, return, carbon and phos reactors
Possible additional items include an ATS

Hi Guys, at the risk of pissing of the BMW, Merc and Audi clan im looking for an opinion. I am fortunate enough to have a choice between 2 luxury sedans the Lexus IS250 SE 2.5 V6 and the Jaguar XF 3.0 V6 premium. I have never really followed the "sheep" and bought one of the titanic 3 Germans stuff (I have my reasons), but the motor plan on my Lexus IS250 SE has run out after 3 years of a beautiful driving relationship. Long story short I now need to choose between just buying another one or making a shift to JAG
Anyone out there got any experience with this vehicle or an opinion. I'm truly stuck and googled reviews but they are all biased. Anyone got one
The Jag
The Lexus
I promise I'm not boasting - remember I said I'm fortunate enough to have the choice but its going to break the bank so I need to be carefull.

Thought I would do a picture thread on my recent trip to the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia.
My brother and I stayed at a resort called Wave Park. (
www.wavepark.com) Its one of the most incredible places, and heaven if you are a surfer or diver.
The resort can only accommodate a max of 14 people but we were so lucky because other than my brother and me, only two other guys booked in for our trip, one from USA and the other from New Zealand. So we had the island to ourselves. (good thing if you are a surfer) The food was great, the accommodation was great and the waves were
..well see for yourselves.
This is the bungalow my brother and I stayed in.

And this is the best room, the balcony. (room with a view)
You can actually see someone riding in the barrel on that wave. Yip THIS is paradise!!

Hi all.
As i add new liverock to my systems, i get to see many small new creatures in my tanks. At first, i am quite excited about the strange things crawling around, untill i try and ID them.. Then i see how harmfull they can be in the tanks.
Should we maybe start a thread dedicated to education on this subject?
Yesterday, i found what must be a form of sea spider in my one tank, so far my research indicates they are bad in a reef setup.
The other day, i found a blue Nudi, the weekend, a red nudi..
Surely there must be some form of "keep an eye out for these critters" list?
Maybe even algea or fish, snail, SPS sickly bahavior list too?
Kinda like a list all the newbies can refer to, ideally with photos and samples?
Here is a pic of a seaspider that looks like teh one in my tank:

Hi guys. As many of you know, i have that big area in my house that can host a 2500L tank if i place the tank on top of it. The area itself is supposed to be an indoor plant area.
Building a massive tank on top of it would not be cost effective.
After visiting Furbs yesterday, i saw how cool a reef tank looks from the top, so i'm thinking of rather building a tidal pool tank in that area in my house (will also be about 2500L)
All i need to do is marbalite the existing structure, do the plumbing, aquascape, do the lighting and voila!
But here is my question:
How would YOU do lighting in a tank that is to be viewed from the top?
Would you place the lights in the walling? (Underwater lighting)
The "tank" would be about 1M wide by 2.5M long by 80cm tall and would host a reef with colorfull anemone's etc, and maybe a school of fishies. Or well, something that would be cool viewed from the top. or even a fish free tank.
Any suggestions?

Hi Guys
I have decided to start a new tank, I am splitting to a fish only tank, triggers, surgeons and all the bigger fish, keeping them in my existing 1.5m tank. I have just bought a used tank 1.7mx1mx.6m deep. I intend using this tank for my nemmies and lps's. Please advise on the type and quantity of lighting. I am thinking 10-14k metal halides with T5 actinics but would like to do this right.

Hey hey,
before I make an investment in a chiller can someone clear a few things up?
1) I put my bio calcium and magnesium into the last chamber of the sump, the return pump will feed the chiller, is this an issue?
2) What is the IDEAL temperature for a
SPS/
LPS reef?

Hey guys,
So I thought Id post a pictorial on how to frag corals.
(I will add to this post as I frag more and more)
Mushrooms - Discosoma
You will need:
Cutting surface (I had some spare granite lying around)
3 x water containers
Some orange bag
Scalpel or Stanley blade (If you can, rather get a scalpel)
Gloves
Eyewear (Yes, Im serious - these corals squirt)
Fishing line or elastics
Frag plugs ( LR rubble, coral skeletons etc)
Towels (Reefers always need towels)
Some Pics:
I wear glasses, so that takes care of eyewear - although Im going to buy a full face splash mask
Water Containers - 1st to hold the mothers, 2nd to hold frag plugs and completed frags, 3rd to quick set glue and dunking the frags.

Fragging
Take the mother colony and place it on your cutting surface.
Cut the mushroom into 4 parts (I prefer to cut the shroom on the rock so that it doesnt slip and slide all over the place)
Using your blade, scrape the mushroom off the rock whilst keeping a thin layer of LR from underneath the mushroom, ensuring that the whole foot comes off the rock (if it doesnt - dont worry, a new shroom will grow there)
Mushroom off the rock - you can see the thin layer of LR - Sorry for the bad pic, its hell to take photos on granite
Then, seperate the musrooms into 4 parts

Can someone tell me how this should be setup i.e. how deep it must stand in the water, how I should adjust the internal water level using the supplied pipe, how to know when it is working OK or not etc.
The water level in the sump's skimmer compartment will be 300mm high.

Hi guys... The weirdest thing happened this last day. I am hoping that my good friend Tiger see's this thread to share his knowledge on whitespot...;)
Anyway, so I have added three Nemateleotris Magnifica (Firefish) and inside the LFS tank one fish had one little white spot on it. I obviously didn't take that one, and the others were clean.
Introduced them into the DT (first few fish) and they immediately started eating like crazy.
So when I got home yesterday I found all three of them with little traces of whitespot, and one had what looked like a black tick on it. I didn't worry too much, as they were still eating and didn't look stressed at all. I also know I would contact Tiger today to assist me...
But thing is, when I pulled the curtain open this morning and my babies woke up from their bolt holes, all the traces of whitespot was gone and even that tick was gone...:biggrin::biggrin:
Could this be due to the water temperature that fell drastically between yesterday and today?
What could cause this do you think? i am not complaining, but maybe this could help others - not sure...;)
-
I got 3 Dusky Damsels. Not the Sergeant Mayor (Abudefduf Saxatilis).
They tend to stay in the upper open water part of the tank.
I got them all at the same size, but for some reason one outgrew the other 2 totally. Now he chases them down below the rocks and then my much smaller Blue Yellow Tail Damsels attack the smaller ones. My luck must be that they are all the same sex. As it is recommended to keep them in a shoal, but not working out for me.
So 2 must find a better home. Or if you have some of them, I will swap one. Hopefully be able to find a partner.
More info
http://www.aqua-fish.net/saltwater/?yellowtail-sergeant
(Note, they got the wrong picture on that page)
They are not aggressive. As the smaller Blue Yellow Tail Damsel bosses them around.

Hi Guys, I just have a few questions on my final setup of my cube.
Is it safe to use PVC Weld on my plumbing?
Should I cycle with or without lights?
How long should I leave the tank for silicone to dry?
What can be used to clean silicone smudges off the inside of the tank (eacept for minora blades)?
How much LR should I get for a total system volume of 300L?
Should I add Prodibio Startup at the beginning of my cycle?
Can I add Purple-up to my system at the beginning of my cycle?
How good is our local LR?
Thanks

hey guys
I got this leather about a week ago with some other corals (mushrooms, and a hydnophora frag as a freebie which is flourishing). when they arrived all the corals were withdrawn as expected after being shipped from capetown. everything else has opened up nicely and is doing well, however the sarc frag stayed curled up. this evening i noticed it appears to be peeling... anyone got any ideas as to what this could be? is the coral dying, or is it merely a form of shedding?

Oki, so now that my 4ft is going strong, i needed another tank for some fish that arent too reef friendly, namely triggers, so i thought i would add this to my system. but having said that i hope to stick to it, so my first fish for it will be a clown trigger or a mated pair of ribbon eels.
its a corner tank, with a maranti wooden stand i built, this will be slow build but not more than a month away...
i have a 150w with 2 x 24w 10k t5's, if i need to to keep leathers and LPS i can, and inside will be 2 sunsun 5000L per hours.
the dimensions are on the pic below, i think its a 300L tank, anyone work it out? its 50cm high
here are some pics to start

Hi guys
Aquired a mini spike fin goby this last Friday.
They are supposed to be rare so i had 2 specifically order it.
Only thing was that i never knew the name mini meant...... flippen tiny!!!
The availability list said the fish's size was medium and i knew that the fish's adult size was small (4cm) but i never expected to need to use a magnifying glass to see it!
He's absolutely beautiful, however he will have to live in my refugium and not the main display so that i can keep a good eye on him and also to keep him from being harmed by my Vortecs or CL.
He seems to be eating Cyclopsease that i mixed in SW and inject near him using a suringe, so thats positive.
Anyone have any extra specific advise on these guys to add please?
ciao

Hi guys... I am in desperate need of advise quickly;
What is the best way to cool water down? My tank was running at 31deg yesterday (to my amazement no ill effects :whistling:)
Anyway, I know there are two main options:
1) Fans. By running PC fans 24hrs over the DT water surface (open top tank) would cool it down, but would this increase evaporatin?
2) Chiller. This is much more expensive, but a much greater way to control temp right? Just a question on chillers however: how does one clean it? It will gather algae over time right, so one must clean it right?
What is your take on this please?

Hi All
Personally I think many reefers, including myself are still purchasing species of fish and coral on impulse. Yes, we might think we know all the feeding requirements, flow and lighting requirements of species, but what about where they are found in the ocean?
I have just had a look at what exactly the Indo-Pacific means, and interestingly enough, I found that this is just a grouping word for three different types of ocean areas. On the map below you will see how far they stretch, so it is possible that species we keep will never even be found in the same water. This makes one consider finding out what part of the ocean you want to keep, and only stocking these coral. By just saying "I have an Indo-Pacific setup" is like saying "I drive a car"
I would imagine that more controll over species can be managed by sticking to the same "Sea" species, rather than just throwing everything that looks nice into the same aquarium.
Here's the info from Wiki:
SubdivisionsThe
WWF and
Nature Conservancy divide the Indo-Pacific into three realms (or subrealms), and each of these into a number of marine provinces.
Western Indo-Pacific
The
Western Indo-Pacific realm covers the western and central portion of the Indian Ocean, including the East coast of Africa, the
Red Sea,
Gulf of Aden,
Persian Gulf,
Arabian Sea,
Bay of Bengal, and
Andaman Sea.
Central Indo-Pacific
The
Central Indo-Pacific includes the numerous seas and straits connecting the Indian and Pacific oceans, including the seas surrounding the Indonesian archipelago (with the exception of
Sumatra's northwest coast, which is part of the Western Indo-Pacific), the
South China Sea, the
Philippine Sea, the north coast of
Australia, and the seas surrounding
New Guinea, western and central
Micronesia,
New Caledonia, the
Solomon Islands,
Vanuatu,
Fiji, and
Tonga. The Central Indo-Pacific, due in part to its central location at the meeting of two oceans, has the greatest diversity of
corals and
mangroves.
Eastern Indo-Pacific
The
Eastern Indo-Pacific surrounds the mostly volcanic islands of the central Pacific Ocean, extending from the
Marshall Islands through central and southeastern
Polynesia to
Easter Island and
Hawaii.

Question 1: "I recently purchased a JVC camcorder that records video as .MOD files. I can't seem to edit the files or play them on my PC. Is there a way to convert .MOD files to .MPG or something that works on my computer?"
Question 2: I have a video file off my JVC as well and wonted to play it on WMP so i changed the file extension from .MOD to .MPEG. Now the problem i have is that the video quality is poor. It is like the video cant keep up with the playing speed, lines drag when something moves. I know this quality is poor because it plays fine on cyberlink power dvd. Any help plz on how to fix the poor quality????
Question 3: I change the ext. mod to avi or mpg , and it works but the problem no sound at all.. .try to burn it into dvd, no luck, i try to burn it into vcd no luck also...
Introduction: .MOD files are JVC's implementation of MPEG-2 transport streams, similar to a VOB file on a DVD or the M2T files used on Sony hard drive camcorders.
Solution:
I actually just found a program called Aiseesoft
Mod Converter. This program will allow you to export your video(s) as .AVI,WMV,MP4,3GP files etc. Here is a brief overview of how to do it:
Make preparations:
Install and run Aiseesoft
Mod Converter
Quick Guide:
Step 1. Add files
Step 2. Set output video format
Step 3. Click the "Start" button to start the conversion.
This tool also allows you to split, join, crop Mod/Tod files, it is very powerful.
I hope this helps, if anyone has a better method or a better software for doing this, please let me know!

I am planning a trip up the Wild coast and Natal South coast. I thought I weould start a thread to find out where the good dive spots are and where are good spots to catch fish/corals. I am considering going to coffee bay, possibly uvongo and am open to suggestions.
Also looking for backpacker/camping style accommodation. The places I know of are bomvu and coffee shack in coffee bay.
Time of year: early to mid december

Many people ask me the same question: "I purchased videos on iTunes, but I can't play them on my video player, because they are in some 'protected' M4V format that only works on iPods. How can I convert iTunes videos to MPEG or WMV format so I can play them on My portable video device such as Archos and Creative Zen?"
I searched on Google, Yahoo answers and post the question on large number of forums, unfortunately, after scouring the Web for days, I couldn't find a FREE way to convert M4V to MPEG, WMV or AVI format.
Then I tried to burn the iTunes video onto a DVD and re-import it into iTunes just like how to remove the protection from the iTunes audios (M4P) by burning it onto a CD and re-import it as mp3. I failed, cause iTunes doesnt have a DVD burning option, then I used Nero, but it still doesnt work as Nero doesnt supports M4V format.
And finally, a software solution. I came across a few kinds of converters on Google search, they are Tunebite, Daniusoft and Noteburner. When I was testing the free trials one by one, what makes me comfortable is the Daniusoft media converter .
Daniusoft
Media Converter software can remove DRM from protected wmv, wma, m4p, m4v, m4a, aac files that purchased and downloaded from online music store and convert to general video and audio formats, you can enjoy playing on portable media players, such as iPod, Zune, Creative Zen, MP3 player, PSP.
Stpe 1: Download and install the
DRM Removal Tool
Stpe 2: Run the software and click Add.. button to load WMA or M4A, M4B, AAC, WMV, M4P, M4V, ASF files
Step 3: Choose output formats. If you want to convert protected audio files, please select Convert audio to list; If you want to convert protected video files, please select Convert video to list.
Stpe 4: Start remove DRM and convert your DRM protected music and videos by click on Start button.
Tips:
You can click Settings button to custom preference for output files.
If you still want to watch other common video/audio even HD video on your portable video device you can choose Daniusoft
Media Converter Pro because Daniusoft Media Converter only support DRM audio and DRM video.

Hi All
I have recently bought a running Buyo 550 (130L) marine tank. I have 3 blue/green chromis, 4 clowns, 2 cleaner shrimps, and an 8 young corals (zoanthus, sun coral, mushroom, .....). IMarine is assisting me with the maintenance. I intend swopping 2 of the clowns for a yellow tang later in the month and possibly one other fish thereafter.

Hi all
Anyone have marine hobby DVD's that they no longer want, i.e. propagation, maintenance etc.
Let me know.

Hi all,
New to marine aquarium keeping. I bought a tank that was already established, but something went wrong in the move. I have lots of red algae, cannot keep fish as they die and the phosphates are through the roof. I have fitted a protein skimmer, but little or no change has occurred. I do not put the lights on as the red algae then goes crazy.
Cheers

Just received my new kit for my Tl 550. will post pics once properly installed.

Hi guys.
I notice and read conflicting info online.
On sites, people use large plastic containers as DSB's, Sumps, etc.
On the same site, they say you should not use plastic containers to host fishes in for longer than a week or two (as a quarantine tank for example) because plastic gives off chemicals when filled with salt water.
If that is true, why then is it ok to use plastic containers for DSB's, sumps, etc over a very long period?
Other sites have large plastic tanks to host grow out fish, others use them to keep RO and saltwater in, etc. etc.
Surely the guys that say plastic is a no-go for marine setups are wrong?

Hi,
There's some posts going around of how/what to use for covering/rust-proofing your metal stand.
How about Rhino Linings, the stuff they spray onto the back of bakkies.
Have a look on
Welcome to Rhino Linings
they use it for more than a bakkie's load bed, i.e. marine use (boats).

since I have been getting my tank up to standard I decided to redo the chiller piping and neaten it all up.
My chiller was feeding directly from the DT and returning directly to the DT. Not good I know. So I changed to to feed from the sump, after the skimmer and DBS.
What I have noticed though is that it runs for allot longer than it used to. The water temp is perfect and it maintains it but just runs allot longer.
Does anyone perhaps know why this is?

Hi guys,
Does anyone out there have any comments about using Kent Purple Tech for stimulating colline algae growth.
I'm always sceptical about using additives.

Hi
Beginner who would like to start with an invertebrate tank (not sure of size!)
- What would be the optimal 'small' size to start with (bearing in mind the effect of changes in a small tank)?
- Any specific type of tank - nano etc?
- What is the list of equipment needed for an invertebrate tank start up?
- Any ideas on the mix of invertebrates that would make the tank really interesting to view?
- Any advice on on hard, soft or live corals?
- Any recommendation on make (local or import)?
Many Thanks!

I have a purple tip sebae anemone for sale or to swop. It is very healthy. I have had it almost a year. It has hosted both common clowns and clarke clown fish. It is to big for my tank.

Hi,
What could I do to get rid of this red hair type algae that is taking over my LR? Ppl have suggested increasing the flow, which I have done, but it just seems to be taking over?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Ok, while reading an old book of mine on reefing i came across a great quote by Charles Delbeek.
Quote:
|
"We offer this information in the hope that it will avoid the needless loss of animals or their mistreatment in captivity. Not all of you may agree with what you see in this book, and that is fine. We ar presenting you with guidelines that have worked for us and others. They may work for you, or you may develop other methods. The important issue is not who is right or wrong but the degree of success and the welfare of the animals"
|
Yes many suggestions and advice given here is based on personal experience and of others, and more general guidelines then iron-clad rules, i notice that most beginners are advised on what they bought was wrong/bad etc, yes we know better due to experience etc but instead of making them feel threatened etc, lets work with what they have and in time educate them with examples on why and how etc....
a good example is bio-balls/ceramic rings, yes these are sold to beginners because the work so well but have some cons too, but most LFS use these, and before any flames, i understand its for a short-time, but then it can be the same for the newbie while we educate him on the scientific side of things and transition them over from the "dark side".
i write this due to many chatting to me off forum about a "hostile environment" which i reply that they took things in the wrong context. Given that no-ones perfect, if we see a mishap/ bad practice etc happening, advise the person to start a thread or provide an existing one on that topic and we can all help and not batter them in their threads :)
I am by no means advocating bad practices or those of experienced reefers to beginners, but sometimes they do get advanced and/or bad information from others off forum.
i hope you all can add to this to make a great experience even better here on MASA,

FLIP!!!!! you know what really grinds me are some LFS!!!!! not to bad mouth any and won't mention any names here but I want to try understand something.
I go to one LFS and ask the price of a 80W t5 ballast, get quoted R695. Go to the next one on my trip ask the same thing, get told it is R545. Next LFS R780, next one R370. Make a phone call to another and it's R250!!!!
How in our fathers name can there be such a huge difference and it's all single ballast, same output and same make!!!!!
Please explain this to me!!!!!!!
I am so fed up with people ripping other people off!!!!!!

Hey peeps,
I've checked a few ways of building up systems and there are obviously a million ideas out there.
The reef max all in one system seems like an approach I would like to adapt and hopefully do a couple of tweeks on.:whistling:
I have a good friend on the South Coast that owns a PG glass (bonus!) and a friend that does metal work... so my basics should hopefully not blow the piggy bank!
What I have in mind is the following:
1- An all glass tank in 10mm 1200lx800wx700h
2-pationing off a back section of about 250to300
3-have an overflow of about 200mm on the one side of the partioning going into a wet dry section then a sump followed by a pump compartment
The idea is to not have a sump at the bottom to keep cables to a minimum and have an open system without a cabinet or lid and hang the light from the ceiling!
Anyone out there that has done a similar build or has a few suggestions before the sillicone gun comes out please let me know?
I will post a basic layout a bit later.
I was also thinking of making a hole in the sump compartment with a drain open/ close valve for easy water changes.

Hi guys, hope someone can help with this question.
One of my potential clients asked if the frozen fish I supply is halaal. I checked the boxes but couldnt find a sign. This fish is caught & processed / frozen at sea.
Could someone enlighten me on this please

I posted a pic under the title 'Chaikin's tank' but I don't know where it is!
We had a 4ft tank a few yrs ago and decided to start all over again after moving house. It's around 5 months that we have had this one going (we moved it from a friend/water and all). Have added a few things to it since. So far so good.
Anyway, somebody asked for tank details so in a blonde's lingo, here they are:
1200 litre capacity
metal halides and other
a large protein skimmer
a smaller protein skimmer (in case I overflow the large one!)
A calcium 'thingie' reactor?
A chiller 'thingie'
Gauges with lots of info
Contents:
Rabbitfish/Foxface
Tangs x 3 blue
Pair Bangai Cardinals (Have my first batch of babies -13 survived - which are now 1 month old)
Wrasse x 2 (cleaner & fairy)
Goby/Blennie? (with a yellow head)
A blue linkia starfish which I have not seen for 2 weeks
Corals (don't know what they are but they are pretty)
Sand Anemone
Other smaller anemones
Butterfly fish x 1
Clownfish (PERMANENTLY spawning but I don't know how to do the 'rotifier' thing to feed the larvae)
Scissortail gobies x 3
3 x cleaner shrimps
2 x red shrimps
Brittlestars
Urchin

I'm in the process of upgrading to a 1.2m, which comes with a steel stand and wooden surrounds.
My current tank's wooden stand is starting to blow up and could possibly give in soon.
The new tank unit is brown but I would like to paint it black.
What type of paint would I need to use to paint it black and to prevent it from water damage?

Hi all.
I seem to be getting very fine bubbles from my sump into my tank.
At which stage will this be a problem? When is too much fine bubbles a problem?
-
Right we now have our own forum
. Thank you admin !
Guys and Girls this club is something Dallas and I have been talking about for some time, and really hope that it will gain momentum going forward.
If you are in the Jhb area, please join up on the member list thread
[www.marineaquariumsa.com] , new or ancient to MASA, please join up, it commits you to nothing but allows us to tell you what is happening in your area !!!
Dallasg and I have taken on the task of organizing the club in the beginning, but we are not little Hitlers by any stretch of the imagination:nono: so over a few beers at the first meeting or two we will discuss how we as a club can move forward and who would like to be involved running / organizing things.
I will start a thread in a few moments on the first event, but the type of things we have in mind are typical reefing activities
.
Things like fragging demonstrations
Nennie propogation
Visiting lekker systems of member and non members
Frag swopping
DIY demos
The list is endless, but we would also like it to be a social club in the sense that sometimes a meet may simply be at the Dros for a few beers
So lets see some interest and some people signing up to the members thread ... and people a little further field like PTA etc .... guys you are more than welcome to join us at any time, so if you are keen sign up as well. We will never have a function that clashes with one of the other reef clubs in the area !
-
Okay, add your name and mug shot here too, why you ask?, well why not :)
okay, pics arent a must, but please add your name here so i can contact everyone when there is a meetup, party, reef thing etc

Hi All,
Last week Friday, I did a large NSW change in my tank. Since adding the NSW I have seen tiny micro bubbles attached on some of my live rock . i have also seen these micro bubbles rising up from the substrate as well as the live rock.
Please can someone explain why these bubbles are here now and does this indicate some thing bad?
Cheers

when calculating the flow , should i take the full volume off the tank or just the amount of water .
it's for a 120 x 60 x 60 , with 12/15cm of sand + LR , it will be my DT not a sump .
merci .

I have heard and read that angels can nip at SPS. Nip at is different from eating the coral up. Do butterflies actually eat SPS up? what happens to the SPS when they are nipped at? do they die? The only fish that i know of that has evolved to Actually eat the actual coral is the parrot fish. and thanks to them eating the corals we get lovely arognite. IS nipping really so bad for sps that they die from it? I have read that they eat the slime thats produced and at times the coral actually colours up better.
Your experiences?

Hi peeps. My question as a layman in this hobby is how do I differentiate between cyano and coraline. I have this red growth on my rocks and glass and I am not sure what it is. I am busy treating my tank for GHA and in the last week I can see definite improvements ie good reduction in volume. However I am not sure what the red stuff is. Would appreciate any help.

Hello, I am Barbs and do all the typing on behalf of my hubby David, including looking after our reef tank, surfing the net, feeding, etc etc. He does, however, do the water changes and maintain all equipment :)

Hi all
Im looking for a birdsnest sps frag if any1 has one for me.
Thanks
-
Hi guys! (I didn't know if I posted this on the right place at first)
Thank for all the welcomes!
Here was my plan and here might be my new plan and here the questions start.
I wanted to convert my 1200mm x 50 x 50 tank to marine but it has no sump, no nothing actually. So to get all the equipment could get rather expensive.
So after looking around a bit a buddy told me he have a tank for me and look what he want to sell me for R2500. Is it worth it? And then to give the tank a nice revamp with bits and bobs?

Its 2,8m long x 400-500mm wide x 600mm high.
Lots of lights(about 10 fluorescent tube light, which ill have to replace the tubes).

Big sump and a first stage mechanical filter I think.

Some other weird filter stuff which i have no idea what it does? see photo above.
What is your recommendations?
I am not sure yet if ill be doing a reef tank or fish only tank, but would like to be ready move to a reef tank if i want to and have everything ready for the cross over.
PS. I still have no idea what im talking about and the info overload has started, plus i need to re-arrange my whole house around my new obsession!!! (bangs head against desk while fearing the lady's reaction to this)
Regards Bossi

Just want to say this website is totaly the best site to visit if you would like to learn about marine tanks.
My husband as started a Marine tank about a year ago and he always talk about this and that and I sometimes just look at him and not have a clue what he has said:whistling:
So I have decided to join MASA to learn, I have read some of the threads and are very impressed.
Think I will enjoy this!

hi every body
i use for 200 l. Tank florcent lamps daylights 3 special * 12000 klv , 2 moon light and 1 girolux(red)
is this enough for fish tank with animone
please advice cause T5 light is not available in Egypt
thanks in advance

Ok gents here is one for the DIY guru's
Lets assume you build a steel stand, what options has everyone used to level the stand ....... things like a tiled surface play havok with a perfectly level stand... any suggestions?
-
hi there guys,
just a question yet again - is it really needed to have actinics included in your lighting? If one only used "white" tubes would that be ok? T5 lighiting that is.
What benefit does the "blue" tubes have?
-
Hi,
Was wondering if it wouldbe ok to keep a plate coral. What lighting is needed for them. Will my 54W T5's be good enough?
How does one care for such a coral and will the clowns live in him too?
-
I recently got a 2nd hand tank, the back pane is painted blue. I want to remove the paint and paint it black.
How do I go about removing the blue paint?
Would paint stripper be OK?
-
Hi guys
Need some help from the photo pro's here...;)
As you know I am running a NPS system, and thus my majority of light is actinic. I really want to take photo's and post, but I just can not get it right.
I have a FujiFilm Finepix S5800 (or something.) It is not a SLR camera though. I can adjust the appertures and all those stuff manually - but I do not undertstand it.
The moment the camera focusses, the white balance peaks, and this looks as if the light just bounces off a mirror and everything becomes all white... I am taking photo's without the flash, as the phot's would not have the nice deep water look with a flash (and flash is just cruel to ls...)
What should / can I do?
-
Hi All
I'm after a chiller, a HC250 or bigger, if you have or know someone selling one PLEASE let me know!
Thanks
-
Hi Guys
Any input/suggestions appreciated. Thanks a bazillion to all the people who have helped me thus far in conceptualizing this new tank - you know who you are.
Special thanks go to Marcel, who's recently spent many long hours listening to my unstructured rambling ideas and making them a lot more Germanic with the able assistance of Google Sketchup.
The pics below show the main tank to be 90cm wide, but we recently changed that to 100cm, giving the main display a volume of around 1750 litres. Each of the smaller displays in the base come in at around 300 litres. Detailed sump design is still work in progress, but I'd guess it would add an additional 600 litres, bringing total system volume to close to 3000 litres.
The idea behind the smaller tanks below is that they can either be covered up and used as invisible sumps/quarantine tanks, or (by simply clipping out the center panels of the lower doors), used a subsidiary display tanks (this was Marcel's cunning plan - I can take zero credit for this innovation ;-) ).
All of the traditional engineroom gadgetry is located outside the house (mainly for noise and mess reasons), and will be the topic of a separate posting, once we've figured out the details.
OK, so here goes...
This is the intended end result...
The lower display tanks can also be covered up if necessary...
Here's a shot with all the covers off, to give you an idea of what's going on inside:
Some shots of the tank...
... and the stand (50mm steel square tubing, I guess, although I still need to gen an engineer's opinion on this):
Fire away if anyone has comments/suggestions/criticisms...

Hi everyone.
well, At this stage I have nothing except some spare cash in the bank (LIMITED).
I have a friend or two who know their way around and lots of forums to guide me.
This is the setup I am thinking about...
1500(l) x 800(w) x 600(h) (due to room requirements)
4ft sump (layout is still being investigated so feel free...)
Lighting (thinking of MH and T5 combo, but are struggling to get a place to buy this from)
Skimmer, pump(still to be determined)
"powerhead" Polario dual outlet 22000L/H - overkill?what did I forget?
well, that's the starting point - lets c how far we get :D
tnx and nice reading you all :D

hey peeps,
I have an Aqua H2O set up for about 3 and a half weeks.
I added necessary bio accelerators... tank is running perfect skimming lighting great small computer fans blowing the T5's hot air away the whole toot....
Now here is the thing, I am naughty, I've added quite a bit of inhabitants:
-Live rock
-2 small tree leathers
-1 brain coral
-elephant ears
-3 other local hard corals
-fire shrimp
-flag tail pipe fish
all is running well, I did a water change of 20% all ready (running coral sea reef crystals in RO water) I'm adding calcium, strontium, kalkwasser, iodine, etc! once a week, and feeding 5ml of zooplankton every 4 days!
I've had no algea blooms you normally get in a new set up and my nitrates and phosphates are good...
My question is what problems do you guys think I should look for to keep everything stable, eg. water changes etc???

hi guys
i am going to build me a nano tank just want to know where can i get 10mm glass and for ''cheap'' tank size (500x660x600mm):)
-
I have recently acquired a Red Sea Max 130D. I have a few concerns and wonder if anyone else has had similar issues. The first problem is that the inner lamp wiggles itself loose from its fitting after every few openings of the hood. Now I have pushed it in as far as it will go but to no avail, it is tedious task having to open the acrylic cover to re-insert the lamp. The second problem is the protein skimmer - it is awfully noisy and not very efficient compared to the Aqua Medic turboflotor and even the Tunze nano of my other systems. I am of the opinion that the convergent-divergent flow chambers of the RSM skimmer is a flawed design as compared to simpler constructions. Otherwise a quality system with decent looks to boot.

Hi Guys
Do Aiptasias kill fish... ive had two of my fish dying and only thing i can think of is maybe the one Aiptasias i found in the tank stung them.

Hey guys
What is this algae growing on my glass? It started off as a diatom bloom, then the purple bits started to appear (was hoping it was coralline but my luck cant be that good - its growing quite quickly anyway). now i am starting to see some hair algae grow near the bottom (not very clear in pic sorry).
nitrate is 2.5ppm, ammonia is 0 and phosphate readings are also 0 but that could be because the algae is feeding off the phosphate. i have recently put chaeto in my sump (about 4 weeks ago) and while it hasnt grown it hasnt died either. I had a 2500k bulb in the sump which i changed yesterday to 6400k, which will hopefully improve the growth of the chaeto and help curb nitrate and phosphate accumulation. i am also planning on installing a carbon and phosphate reactor in the near future.
I have been doing 10% weekly water changes using RO, and have recently added about 5kg more live rock which i was assured was well cured.
not too sure what the cause of this algae growth is, someone suggested getting a turbo snail but that will only treat the symptom and not the cause. any ideas?

Hi All,
My Kenya Tree has detatched itself from its rock but looks to be in good health - should i be worried?

Hi every one. I got 2 questions for you guys. First 1 is, will a turbo snail solve my problem with green algae growing on glass at back of my tank. Second question is, when i feed my fish is see a little black thing also feeding from flakes when it gets to bottom of tank. It looks like some sort of shrimp. I tried to take a photo but as soon as i come near the tank to take a photo, it go hide in the rocks. It's so dam quick.
Do anybody have an idea what i could be.

hey everyone,
I have 2 black and white ocellaris clownfish and had them for around 2-3years. The female always use to get really fat looking like she had eggs then it would disappear (just thought they wernt ready). I also own a cleaner shrimp, for some time at night the shrimp has made its way to my clowns and their anenome. The shrimp had never attcked the clowns but seems to annoy them constantly. I was wandering if the shrimp was keeping them from breeding or just annoying them.
Thanks Jacob.

As the December holidays are upon us I was thinking about what i would've done if my tank was up and running fully stocked. Just some thoughts of what to do listed below. Please add ideas and/or experiences about what to do and what not to do...
1)Don't add anything new to your tank just before you leave. I would say this goes for livestock and some pieces of hardware.
2)Ask a fellow reefer to look after your tank and not your neighbor/friend as they will overfeed, etc and won't know what to do in a emergency.
3)Make sure your auto top up has enough ro in it.
4)Buy a auto feeder.
5)Make sure your backup power supply is in good working order.
6)Empty your skimmer cup before you leave.
That's all I can think of, please add to this thread.

Happy birthday dudes and enjoy the rest of the day - hope your'll see many many more

We are busy visiting other reefer friends, and they have two tanks, tapped through the same sump.
About ten days ago they took their domino's out, and put them in the fowlr tank. The tank they are in, there is no agressive fish, it is basically non reef friendly fish, but the Dominos have become basically white with black fins, and now even the fins are going white, and the fins seem to be deteriating(as if they are being bitten). They are eating, there is a blue velvet damsel in the tank, but he does seem docile for a damsel, all the other fish are fine, except the regal in the other tank has broken out with white spot.
Parameters are fine, is only really the domino's going white and their fins falling apart.
please help or advise.

Hi guys?
My name is Bossi and i have been obsessed with all piscatorial matters of all kind since i can remember!
I have and had many a fresh water setup and will hopefully pretty soon have a marine setup ready to stock. But i am really scared of this new interest of starting a marine setup and i have heard so many stories of it. Too expensive, diffucult, lots of work and mainatance etc etc.
So now im doing the research and what a great website i have stumbled across!(marine aqauriums SA)
So you might just hear so much from me in the near future that you would probably say "AG NEE, NIE ALWEER HY NIE"!
Cool guys chat as soon as i have read through most of this forum and have a better idea of what this marines thing is all about.

Hey
I'm almost finished with most of the work on my new tank:thumbup:. Just one problem, I have two glass panes in the tank that are used to support but look crap if under water. My plan is to silicone some live rock to it and the stick a few corals upside down there:whistling:. Just want to know if it's possible and wich corals can I place, Lighting is 2 x 150 w metal halide and 2 x 54 watt t5. Tank dimension are 1800x600x600 but the coral would be at top...

Hi all Masadonians,
So I got this bright idea - how about a marine aquarium. Very innocently I probed good ol' Google - freak, was I flooded with info. Talk about system overload here. Then I found MASA, been pouring over the threads here for hours - very exciting to read some of your stories, both successes and failures.
I count myself fortunate for having stumbled accross this site and would like to thumbs up  those who contribute and those that run/make it possible behind the scenes. Well Done!
Hopefully, with lots of guidance, you might witness the creation of a splendid aquarium over a period of time. Can't say how long - just starting on this journey.
Now let me continue on the seaweed - I mean read.

hey guys
was at northlands yesterday and i saw a beautiful little orange starfish in their coral tank. (not sure of the proper name, sorry, the guy just said it was a "common" starfish...?) anyway the wife is quite keen on him as she has deemed the colour appropriate:lol:
what im wanting to know is what exactly do these guys need to survive? from what im reading on the net, they like detritus and certain types of algae. my tank has been running about 3 months now and water params are all fine. have a cleaner shrimp, 2 perc clowns, watchman goby and a blenny. no corals as yet but getting some mushrooms and a leather next week :) have a fair amount of diatoms and some reddish algae growing on the back glass.
is the starfish reef safe with this lot? will he eat that algae?
cheers

Also when can i put the live sand in??????

I have just brought a book that tells me all this but i just hadn't have chance to read it yet.

Hey
I baught a tenneti tang (acanthurus tennenti) at the lfs. I added the fish into my main tank and it was eating but very shy (thaught it was normal). I saw the fish for three days and suddenly it was gone! I've been looking for 5 days now and can't find anything... It's propably dead by now but this is the second time I lost a tang in this matter. I only have a foxface, yellowtail damsel, african clown, cleaner wrasse and a regal (baught with the tenneti). A small rok anenome but not able to do damage... What could be the problem?:(

I just need to confirm a few things about HDMI cables.
Does one need to spend between R1000-00 and R1800-00 on an HDMI cable? Does a cheaper one give the same benefit or are those sales guys trying to con me as they are rattling on about cable speeds and better wiring?
I have recently purchased a blue ray player which comes with a HDMI cable. Is there any way of connecting the HDMI straight to my TV and run the sound through the amp and then the TV or do I have to run a cable through the amp and then the TV?
Any feedback would be appreciated

Look who's back...!
Quick one guys, my snowflake is a good eater, LOVES anything I offer, but lately seems to have gone off food a bit.
I have tried calamari, shrimp, mussels, squid, raw fish, the works and he comes out and has a good look, may take a bite or two but normally he can eat up to 2 calamari rings in a feedind session. Now if he has a tiny sliver of one it's a lot.
I have read that they go into hibernation type mode, can this be it do you think? Water parameters are spot on, I continue to do weekly cleaning sessions and all other fish and corals are doing well!
Perhaps he's just eating my snails? ha haaaaaaa...can't be sure though, but my snail population has diminished over time since he arrived.

Hey guys
When it comes to cleaning a TS2 - removing the collection cup a few times a week is obvious, but what about the middle section just below the collection cup? I find that it fill with water up to the top of the black conical part, and over time this gets quite manky. I usually siphon it out but its quite a mission to clean properly. normally my water level sits just above the outlet adjuster pipe, and i get decent enough skimmate forming in the collection cup. i hope this makes sense :)
am i being a complete idiot? :whistling:

Hi Everyone,
My name is Enid, I'm so happy :thumbup:that you have a site where I can interact with people that have marine fish of which I know nothing about. I bought my tank yesterday and have a total of 5 clown fish and some coral. I am so excited as it is absolutely beautiful and I really want to get my little marine heaven looking stunning with happy, healthy fish. So I need all the information and advice that I can get. I was told by the people that came and set up the tank that I can only add more fish in 5 days time. I know that collecting marine fish is a very sensitive matter as you need to understand some important things like tempreture of water, lighting, cleaning, what fish to add, food, etc etc so I am keen to hear your comments and where is the best place to get all the beautiful fish and coral. I live in the Fourways area so somewhere close.
Kind regards
Enid

I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank George from Tunze for assisting me with the repairs of my tank after sitting for weeks empty while nothing was done to it by the original tank builders.
Long story short the build was not up to scratch by the tank builders, there were weak amounts of silicon put in certain places leading the the failure of the overflow where by the overflow pane completely detached from the sides of the tank and fell back leading to chaos. The lines of slicone were also visibly not straight in many cases which is poor work by a company who have done some good work in the past and shows a rushed job after not using the time it had sat there doing nothing properly. There isnt much point is having a rant when it doesnt solve any of my problems, but in summary the service i received was very poor to say the least and George stepped in to repair the tank within 5 days. The old overflow was replaced by an old style Tunze overflow which has a component of the flow being sucked up from the bottom of the tank helping in removing detritus from the tank. Very clean and professional work George
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank lighty for keeping my fish for me in the 6 or so weeks i have been tankless and Andreas for keeping my corals for me.
Just a few quick pics to show what the tank looks like now but will post all the changes in my thread next week when exams end.

Hey guys
Need some help here, iv recently noticed this small black slug looking
thing on my monti frag, Iv had the frag for about 2 months now and only the
past week or so, this thing has started to appear. As you can see on the pics
(not the best but I tried) the monti is starting to turn white and the other thing is he
coming out of some hole. I tried gripping the little bugger with some tweezers but he just
backtracks into his hole. So just some advice on what to do would gladly be appreciated.
Thanks

Its time to fire up my tank again.
This is a tank with a history and a passport! :)
Tank stats.
1.8m length
65cm water depth over over-flow
60cm width
Total DT volume of around 680l (180 gallon)
Intended mixed reef with heavy fish load.
Equipment
Tank
The glass is 10mm all round with a double layer over the bottom. It is Euro braced right round with a large central brace across the centre at top too. The tank is on a metal stand with polystyrene cushion between tank and stand. The stand is 90cm height allowing one to view the tank while standing and NOT bending and giving me height beneath the tank for a big skimmer. The stand and tank are finished in dark cherry wood with a closed fitting matching lid. The tank was originally designed for all sides viewing and I have kept that look at present, although I may place a backing to it. Unlikely as I intend to use a small office space behind the tank and have the tank as a room divider, thus being able to view the tank from behind as well.
Sump
The sump is a very simple design with three chambers. First chamber is a DSB, second chamber houses an impressive Deltec Ap851 skimmer, which is over rated for the tanks volume, although there is thought to that as well. The water flow comes over a durso stand pipe and is split between Skimmer and first chamber, with roughly 70% going direct to skimmer. A simple ball valve controls this flow. The sump is 1m length X 0.4m width and 0.55 height. An expensive Eheim return feeds the tank with 4500l/hour. This return pump was chosen by its previous owner due to its quiet nature and is largely the reason that having the sump open at the back is possible.
Internal Water flow.
I have four primary pumps for internal water flow. 2 seio M1500 are controlled by a seio controller which is mounted inside the sump area. These two deliver 6000l/h each on max. To limit the visual effects of the pumps in tank I have mounted these against the overflow chamber with magnets. All internal flow pumps will be magnet mounted, sucker mounts are never reliable and I will not male the same mistakes again. Near the return pipe I have a Tunze 6100 (with tunze mod of half the protective ribs removed from cover) on a tunze 7094 multi controller giving a max of 1200l/h. The tunze controller only has one pump attached at present and with funds permitting I will switch from seios to tunze controlled pumps (4 possible controllers) and use photo period lights from this controller. I also have a boyo wave maker on controller but for now I am leaveing that and some spare seios out of the equation. The tunze is a very powerful pump and I will guage internal flow based on the amount of flow I get from the pumps in at present.
Lights
Initially I am aiming at setting this tank up as a mixed reef with LPS and Softies. However I enjoy photography and will set my lighting more in accordance with this than I will with the lighting of the corals. I intend to have 2 double ballast 80W T5s with three white tubes and 1 blue. Supplemented with 4 54W T5 actinics. Bulbs will most likely be geiseman or Ati. Lighting will be DIY for now. With such heavy lighting, the hood will get warm so I will add a fan, although the back is open anyway.
Mechanical Filtration
This is primarily controlled with the AP851 Deltec skimmer. I will be implementing a more biology less technology approach to the filtration of this tank, but the skimmer is my primary defense and will be run 24 hours for the run in period of this tank (estimated 7 months for maturation of biological filtration).
Chemical Filtration
Initially this is handled with rowaphos in a small phosphate reactor, but with time I may include Carx system to this tank
Biological Filtration
This will be the primary filtration of this tank with a mixture of methods employed.
I will start with 150-200kg of LR as the heart and lungs of the filtration.
I will run a small dsb in first chamber of sump.
I will aim at putting 250kg of aragonite into the display tank, with sections that are deep enough for anerobic activity, if not the whole bed.
I will aim at using a small algae turf scrubber as well.
Heating/Cooling
I use 2 300W jager heaters to supplement each other and ummmmm chiller not required in my current location! J
Auto top up and additives/dosing
I have a designated 100l RO reservoir and manually add kalkwasser, although I will use a kalkstirer when I feel its needed, depending on inhabitants. A ATU is a vital piece of equipment, especially to keep the water levels constant and thus the skimmer running at optimal skim-mate production.
I intend to look into different dosing methods such as vodka as a carbon source supplemented by additional bacteria, but thats a way in the future yet.

Hello all,
wanted to hold back on starting this thread until I had something to show but I'm looking for some general suggestions so here go's.
Busy setting up my first ever tank.
DT:
1000l x 650d x 600h.
Center overflow with one 50mm hole for overflow and two 27mm holes, one 27 for return the other for running wires from below for lights, powerheads and what else is needed.
Stand:
Welded stand, 38 sq tubing all round, to be cladded in wood, galvinized, ajustable feet.
Sump:
900l x 550d x 500h, 4 compartments, 1 rear full lengh for topup water, 3 at front, one for skimmer, one for DSB and one for return.
Current status:
I've got the DT, standing temp on an old goverment type table (empty)...not the best place for it.:chatterbox:
The stand is at the shop for galvinizing.
Busy building the sump:thumbup:....this is fun and not as difficult as i thought, only building the outside, will wait for the skimmer/return pump before building the compartments.
Also busy with the DB box.
ToDo:
skimmer - either TS2 or Orca 100
pumps - still searching, want something that is economical on electricity, considired the halia 6540 but this uses 100w....
lights - don't know what to do, posted the question in the lighting forum.
will use playsand for my DSB, and a mixture of playsand and arag for DT.
Rock-work - thinking of base rock with LR but not sure yet
A comment on my DT. When I was looking for DT's i saw a lot of bad second hand tanks and a lot of bad silicon work on the LFS tanks.
Eventually ended up having the tank build by Peter Power and I am very happy with the result, Peter also giving me lot's of advice and I'm also reading MASA all the time.
will take some pics tonight of the work in progress, seeing all MASA members are pic-freaks :whistling:
That's it for now. Any sugestions/comments are welcome.

Hi,
I'm in the process of setting up my tank and have to start thinking of the lights.
My tank is 1000l x 650w x 600h, water level at 570.
I would like to build towards a mixed reef over time with only a few fishes.
As this is my first ever tank I am asking the question from you, the more experienced reefers,
suggestions pls.
Due to location anything that needs to 'hang' is a no-no.
I saw a cheapy T5 unit with 8 T5's and i can fit two of them over the tank = 16 T5's ..... is this to much???
but this will look a bit unfinished for the wife's sake so I'm thinking of a neat canopy with a couple of T5's inside - how many?
I'm trying to stay away from MH due to heat and I still havnt seen any nice MH canopies that sits on the tank itself.
Any suggestions welcome.

Guys, Alida tried to send an e-mail yesterday, but she got a message that said "not enough disc space" or something. It gave her the option to free up disc space and to "compact" the messages, which she did.
I have made a lot of sub folders under the folders section in outlook where I sort the different messages I get. When I opened Outlook this morning, all of the subfolders with it's contents were gone.
I did a system restore, but still, nothing. I found the folders under,:
"C:Documents and SettingsUserLocal SettingsApplication DataIdentities{3AF0DB6A-F7E1-47A5-B0F5-7A4FA2C20A8D}MicrosoftOutlook Express
But I cannot seem to open or restore any of them. All of the folders have a "Internet explorer" Icon on it and if I say open, it just goes back to the page and says open.
Please help- how can I retrieve all the folders as most of my work is stored under the different folders?????

Morning all
In the process of wiring up MH's, 250w, but one question, is should I be running an earth. On the ignitor and ballast there is NO wiring for an earth, if I should be running an earth, should it go directly to the reflector's connection? There previously was an earth connected.

Good morning, I'm setting up my first marine tank? My wife insists on clown fish so what else can I put in the tank.
Any tips welcome?
My tank size 1.0 x 0.4 x 0.4 (how many fish can i put in there)

Hi all.
I am playing around with hatching brine.
Some eggs float, others sink.
Using soft airation, they move around and hatch.
Still. Some get stuck to the top and sides of the tank, and other sink never to hatch.
The BBS swim around all over.
When you switch the airation off, the eggs drop to the bottom while some still float at the top. again the BBS swims around.
If you put a strong light on them, they swim AWAY from the stong light. If you put a medium light on them, they swim towards the light (they gather quite quickly)
So here is my latest test design i hope to build over the weekend:
The tank is dark on the left (Spraypainted, or whatever) and has a lid where you can put new eggs in. The ones that float will float and stay on the left. The ones that sink will sink. Adding airation will move the sinkers around, but the floaters stay at the top. (Unless of course you GOOI the bubbles)
24 hours later the eggs hatch.
When you want to harvest, you switch the light on on the right hand side and the airpump off. The BBS swims to the right and you open your tap to collect them (on teh right). You can add water and switch the airpump on again and repeat the cycle to get the next late hatching batch if any.
Ideally if this works, i would need two of these. After about a week's use, i can drain the tank via the bottom valve and flush the system while teh second one is in operation.
Eggs can be added in the mornings and evenings to get a well cycled batch of fresh BBS.
Any thoughts before i build this prototype?
Cheerz
Me.

As you may have already noticed, my time spent on here over the last few months has been limited.
My 90 year old grandmother’s health has started to rapidly decline, from falls to heart problems.
On Tuesday I found her sitting in her recliner disoriented, unable to get up, and in the same clothes that she was in the day before. She didn’t move out of her chair for 19 hours. Her dinner that I gave her before I left was still sitting on the kitchen table, uneaten.
She is currently bleeding internally (somewhere), running a fever, and still confused. She is in a lot of pain, but unable to tell us where it hurts, or what happened. Today they gave her two units of blood. I hope that when I return tonight she is better. More tests are scheduled for tomorrow.
For now, I am spending my days and nights at the hospital, with the exception of about 2 hours a day when my mother relieves me.

Yes, this not a joke.
I bought a 2nd hand 1.2m w x 65cm d x 70cm h (546L) with sump 90cm w x 50 d x 50 h (237 L) total system volume is around 700L.
The tank came with 3 x 54w T5 Daz units (3 tubes each) one of them has been modified with 2 more T5s.
I am not going to use all of the t5's I want MH. With that height I am sure I'll get better results using MH. I have a 2 x 150w MH pendant) add 3 x 54w Actinic to that and I'll be good to go.
The tank came with more or less 40kg of LR, I'll have to add more.
I will run a TS2 skimmer to start and see if I need to upgrade it.
The tank is on a metal stand clad with stained wood.
All my LS from the Nano will be moved over in time. Finally I can have a Yellow Tang and a Mandarin the fish I've always wanted.
Tomorrow the cleanup starts and I'll take lots of pics:P

IS IT TRULY A SIN OR AGAINST THE LAW TO GET A DISCOUNT ON HARDWARE FROM YOUR LFS.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH GETTING DISCOUNTS ON HARDWARE FROM YOUR LOCAL FISH SHOP, OR ON ANYTHING FOR THAT MATTER. I MEAN TO CLOSE A DEAL WE ALL HAVE TO SACTRIFICE.
WHY WOULD SOME LFS'S TRY AND END THE DISCOUNTS WE GET FROM OTHER SHOPS BY PHONING THE MAIN SUPPLIERS TRYING TO CLOSE ACCOUNTS :nono: " I MEAN COMMON GROW UP ". ARENT WE AS PAYING CUSTOMERS ALL INTERESTED IN SAVING SOME " TOM " AND IT IS ALWAYS NICE TO SCORE SOMETHING SO YOU HAVE MORE TO SPEND ON THE NICE TO HAVES.
WOULDN'T WE ALL WANT TO SEE SOME COMPETITION, SO WE AS CONSUMERS CAN BENEFIT. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE ORDER AMOUNTS ARE HUGE.
GIVE YOUR INPUT AND LETS SEE. MAYBE WE SHOULD START SOMETHING WHERE WE AS LOYAL PAYING CUSTOMERS JUST SANCTION A LFS FOR 4 OR MAYBE 8 WEEKS AND THEN SEE WHO WINS. I DONT THINK A LFS CAN SURVIVE A LOSS FOR SUCH A LONG PERIOD AND THUS WHILE NEW STOCKS ARRIVE.
IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE WHO WILL DO A " LEKKER " TOY-TOY LIKE THE TAXI'S WITH PETROL, OR OTHERS WITH CHECKERS  WITH US THAT ARE FED UP WITH ALL THESE HIGH PRICES AND COMPLAINING LFS OWNERS WHEN WE DO GET DISCOUNTS FROM OUR LOYAL LFS. ;)
SO PLEASE YOUR INPUTS WILL HELP US ALL.
WHO WOULDN'T LIKE TO GET DISCOUNTS FROM THE LFS THEY SUPPORT ?.

So i was recently sent to the country of Guyana for work, and i thought i would share some pics with you, those that dont know Guyana is in the West Indies and shares a border with Brazil deep in the Amazon....
After 66 hours of travel the last 11 hours was on the back of this bedford.... 11 hours to cover exactly 94KM.....

this is the accommodation i stayed in ..... had to sleep in the hummocks because of snakes
a short hike into the Amazon..... 30km, 38 degs C, 90% Humidity, drank 13L of water and thought i was going to die... but made it somehow!
Dawn In the Jungle ...... 40m high trees up to 50m high in places

Some sort of Barbel caught in a stream next to camp, the stream was only 2m wide and 30 cm deep, i had been swimming in there moments before this devil was caught !
A caimen caught in camp, it was later released.
Heding back to georgetown on a river some 10km wide ...
it was an awesome trip but bloody hard !

Hi all,
Had mny water tested by a few people now. Everything is great except my nitrate. all readings are between 100mg/l and 250mg/l depending how soon the test was done after a water change.
I have up'ed my changes and increased the amount I change from 20% to 30% but the level drops for a day then its way high again. What can I do to get this to drop to acceptable levels. Any filter medium or such? Any type of chemicals to add?
Thanks - hope you can help

I've decided to do this as I have nothing to lose anymore. As some of you guys know I bought a 2m tank from Zookeeper (Aashiq). I went to go look at the tank and when i arrived the glass was very dirty and you could not really see any scratches, etc. But because I've dealt with him in the past i took his word when he said that the tank had minor scratches around the bottom and that you could hardly see it.
Anyways; he helped me bring the tank to my house, which was VERY generous of him, last week Monday. On Saturday that passed i managed to start cleaning the tank. I hosed it down and used a new sharp blade to clean the glass. As I started my heart just dropped!!!!! This tank is scratched so bad all over that I now have to replace all the panels for more than what i paid. I contacted him about this and got the response that I should use the back pane for the viewing pane as he never cleaned the back. Well, that must be the worst panel as it's got huge swirl marks all over!! You can clearly see that a scourer was used to clean the tank.
I've now insisted that he refunds my money as this tank was sold to me under false pretenses!! He pretty much refuses to do so to date. I even bought his RO unit at the price that he asked for it knowing that I have to replace all cartridges, etc. It probably would cost me less to buy a new one from The Waterboy... Look, i know the responsibility lies with the buyer to have a good look at what they're buying and accepting the product "voetstoots". But how can you blatantly lie to someone knowing that they'll see the damage the moment they clean it??????
I have been lied to and ripped off!!!!!!!!!!!:nono::nono::nono::nono:
May this serve as warning to anyone wanting to buy anything secondhand...
Zookeeper, I dare you to respond...

This guy just outgrew my tank, enfringing on other corals, so I had to remove him and placed him in my Frag Setup where he remains happy. Be carefull since this is a very aggresive coral. Allow at least 15cm around it to be safe.
I will post the sale/swap for 1 week to give masa members a chance then I will take to LFS. I would be prepared to swop for a coral of similar value.
Dont really want to let it go, but it just doesnt work in my reef anymore

I have an Aquamedic Sulphur Reactor (SR 400) connected to a Hydrocarbonate reactor via its output to neutralize the the sulphuric acid risk.
Its been running for almost a year now. In theory within the Sulphur reactor special bacteria reduce nitrate by oxidizing Sulphur in an oxygen free environment. Since its installation I have managed to contain nitrate to very low levels.
Over the last few weeks I've noticed a pungent "rotten eggs" smell coming from the affluent of this setup.
Is this the dreaded sulphuric acid which for some reason the Hydrocarbonate reactor is no longer neutralizing or is the normal for a "mature reactor" for example ?
I've switched off the flow of water through the reactors pending a reasonable answer which I cant seem to find via the normal google search methods.
Lastly if this is going "pear shaped" should I replace both the Sulphur beads and the hydrocarbonate ?

Ok so i have decided that the current tank is just not doing it for me and I have enlisted the help of a friend to build another tank. I need some input on the height of the tank.
The current dimensions for this tank is:
130*70W*55H water level at 50
I was thinking after seeing SunnyX's reef that i should rather go 50H with water level at 45 esp since this tank will be lit with T5 only.
I am thinking that with 45H it will be easier for the light penetration as well as the flow?
Your thoughts?
This will more geared towards sps with a few Lps and softies.

Hi
I was just wondering if u starting out in this  hobby, is it cool to get power heads (1 or 2) instead of a wavemaker initially for a 50 gallon tank for circulation? Reason being power heads cost a lot less than wavemakers unless I'm mistaken.
Also what role does a power head/wavemaker play in the aquarium besides circulation?
Ta for the replies

Is this a Nidibranch?
I bought my first leather about 2 months ago and after introducing it to my DT I saw a little piece "fall off" and move. The "wound" on the leather where the pice "fell off" healed within seconds, but before I could even realised what happened, my Clarkii grabed the small piece and ducked into the rocks. At first I thought my leatrher was fragging itself, but as a beginner I thought my luck couldn't be that strong... After a major cleaning of equipment on Saturday, I found the "baby" sitting behind a powerhead, but as soon as I touched it, it sucked onto the powerhead like a mussle suck onto the rock.
I got it off the rock it was sitting on and in a plastic container (I was told to blast this mother f***r with an RPG rocket launcher, but thought I might cause damage to plastic container).
Is it true, if this is a Nudibranch, that it can destroy a whole tank?
I got all these questions regarding this, but I can't type fast enough.
ps In my eagerness to get in off the rock I might have "stabed" it with the knife, but my concern was the LR it was sitting on

Hi,
I'm selling a new 1.2mx600mmx600mm tank. Total Volume 430L
All 10mm glass including 10mm euro bracing top and bottom. Tank only, no stand
Drilled back glass with "IDOL MARINE" style overflow. Overflow not finished yet. Have the glass panel for that. Just have to silicone it over the holes on the back glass.
Thanks

Hey guys...
Okey, my system is primed and ready to go (well, cycling any way...;))
After a lot of thought, and after buying that magazine from Lanzo I decided on going for a NPS (non photosynthetic) dominated setup.
I have done plenty of research and I am getting the Grotech Phyto reactor soon. I also know about the obvious increase in nutrients and I have a VERY active DSB that I bought over from another reefer.
Anyway, my question to you guys are two fold:
1) Although the tank will be NPS "dominated" I would still like to keep some other softies with it. Would this be possible? The inmates I was thinking of for the NPS corals are green & blue mushrooms, Metallic Green Star Polyps and torch / hammer coral and Zoanthids.
The reason for these coral is that they do grow in deeper water right? Thus they would not require the massive lighting of MH's, and they also filter feed, thus they would do fine. But do you get these corals living with suncorals, cauliflower and gorgonians in the wild?
2) Then, I am struggling with deciding on what light to use. MH is absolutly unnessisary for these coral, so I am abviously considering T5's (and even LED) I know that Shrooms, Torches, Zoa's and MGSP do have some level of photosynthesis as they have zooxanthellae inside them, so would 2x 24W T5's in be sufficient for them, then I have the Actinics for the Non Photo corals.
What are your thoughts guys please? Would you recon I go FULL NPS or partly, with the corals I described above.
PS: One major reason I have for keeping shrooms is their water cleaning ability.

Hi guys, I've had my system running now for about 6 weeks, I added reggies into the DT and virtually since I've had it one section has been progressively turning black. I can see that there's life in the sand but I'm thinking that the blackness can't be good. I haven't tested the water as I don't know what to test.
Any suggestions. Here are some pics

This is not my own plans however I found plan on the net. This was the easiest build ever with the cheapest raw materials.
dug around friends back yards until I found standard PVC underground sewer pipe.
Bought cap ends at hardware store.
Internal piping was from 10mm silicone tubing. (used about 20m)
Connectors I used the 12mm irrigation connector also found at your local hardware.
Note that unit is under pressure so ensure that inlet and outlet must be properly sealed and stable.
Also make sure that the 10mm pipe has no kinks in it when assembling as this will restrict flow. Simple - test blow through inlet. If difficult to blow through start open up and check piping for kinks. This part gave me the biggest headache. Suggestion do not take coiled piping right up to the top.
Have fun and enjoy.

A couple of years ago I had a heater that got stuck in the closed position. Consequently I had a few tropical fortunately not marine fish that was ready for the table. I have put this unit together and it has worked well for me for the last 4 years.
Please note that I am not an electrician so please have unit checked before installing on your tank. Also I am sure that the electrical electronic experts can advise on improvements.

I have a 437 liter tank and would like to know how often should I do water changes??
-
Hi all,
Ive just started out on this hobby and will probably need loads of help!
Here is the first of probably loads of questions:
When should I start runnng a protein skimmer?
I have a 525l tank with a 160l sump. I added LR on Friday 30/10. I started cycling a week prior to that.
I had been advised that I should not use the skimmer until I start adding livestock, however, I have noticed that hair algae has started growing and other threads inthis forum have implied that the skimmer should be used.
Thanks!

Every one has told me not to put in a nemi in a new tank. My tank is 2 months old. 437 liters. I have bought a maroon elephant ears from Idol marines. On the bottom was a pretty white nemi(don't know the type) that we could not get off. It is now in my tank for 3 weeks on the same rock that I have bought it on. It is eating every 2nd day and is very beutifull. What do you think about that.
-
Hi I have 2 baby nemo's in my tank of 437 liters of water. The nemo's is plus minus 2cm long. Will it be possible for me to put in 2 other nemos that is 6cm long with this 2 babys. All of them is the common clowns.
-
Last night just before i got into bed i took out my touch and had a look in my tank. I saw one of my hermit grabs on top of this rock and it looked like he wanted to get out of his shell the next thing i saw thousands of eggs or tiny babys under his shell and he started to let them lose. They were flying all around the tank. I was thinking of taking him out and putting him my other tank but i thought just let him be.
I dont know what the chances of any of them livivng are??? But it was cool to see.

I went to VIP the other day and they were unloading a whole lot of new toys from a company called Dymax. The lighting range is brilliant from full pendants with built in timers so you don't have to have a thousand timers on a multiplug. They have one hooked up to their display tank and the lighting is brilliants.
There are also clip on halides in 150 and 250 watts for nanos.
They have a full range of skimmers for nanos up to 8000 litre beasts. NOt sure on the performance of those but they look good.
There are a whole lot of other things including a stunning pico tank of about 20 litres which looks like a mini Jebo with a clip on LED light for about 700 bucks.
All the stuff is reasonably prices compared to other brands out there

Part One: What is TS, MTS, M2TS?
TS is the abbreviation of Transport stream (in high definition). It is a communication protocol for audio, video, and data which is specified in MPEG-2 Part 1, Systems (ISO/IEC standard 13818-1) (TS == Transport Steam).
Nowadays, TS files are widely spread on the internet as (usually split) recording profiles from HDTV broadcasts. Some Camcorders such as JVC Everio GZ-HD40 also support this HD format.
MTS format is a high-definition MPEG, AVC, H.264 transport stream video file format which commonly used by HD camcorders such as Sony Canon, Panasonic.
.MTS files are used premarily with Sony hardware. Camcorders make use of MTS in the form of AVCHD, a recording format made specifically for camcorders. Some camcorder models from Canon also use MTS files. These files are also present on Blu-ray disc compilations, therefore they are capable of storing quite a large amount of information and data tracks.
M2TS file format is given to video/audio files created by certain Sony Camcorder models. A .m2ts file is a Sony high definition video file type. M2ts files are raw AVCHD videos recorded using Sony's , such as the HDR-SR(xx) series models. Panasonic, Canon and other brands of AVCHD camcorders also record in m2ts format. Currently, m2ts files can be played using the Picture Motion Browser, which is an application video player provided with Sony AVCHD camcorders.

I just bought a second hand RO/DI unit. It's been standing for a couple of months apparently. I can see that the indicator resin needs to be replaced. Do i need to now replace the filmtec membrane as well as the sediment & Carbon cartridge?
Please pm me prices of all of these...

After what's been happening to amalick's frogspawn and hammer he found a brilliant link for coral placement that explained why his corals might be dying off.
