Hey guys, looking for a Copperband in the KZN area to eat my aiptasia that has regrown with a vengeance after the other butterfly was returned. Would be nice if its eating prepared foods but there is plenty of 'natural' foods for it to eat if not.
-
Posted: June 30th, 2010, 11:26pm CDT by PeterL
I have a CopperBand which is causing much destruction to my reef, it is picking the life out of my open brain (which is is bad shape as a result) and is picking my tube worm to bits - seems to have a fit with each of the feathers it eats but just keeps on going back at it.
Is there any way of stopping this behavior other than removing it completely from the system - I have it up for sale but if it is preventative, I would like to keep it. Otherwise it must sadly go

Notes: This little guy was on my dream list of fish to add to my reef from the onset of reefing. I finally got it and was warned about it chomping my soft corals, it however isn't interested in them. As you can see in this pic, it is making a meal of my feather worm which has been in hiding for nearly a week until I coaxed it out tonight just to be picked almost imidiately by this fish and has been picking my open brain to the point where the brain is in a bad shape. It is eating well and in awesome condition.
Are there any offers to maybe swap for an alternate species or corals? Or simply to buy. Very heart sore to have to remove this fish as it is one of my favorites

Hi All,
I compared some greenwater (at last I've got some growing!!), Kent Zoe and Kent ZooPlex.

Kent Zoe: There seems to be very little (visible) going on here. The bottle says "bio-available vitamins, amino acids and minerals ... spirulina". I guess the small specs are spirulina.
Kent ZooPlex shows a lot more, bigger parts. The bottle says "whole, bio-engineered marine zooplankton ... approximately 800 microns"
Greenwater (Nannochloropsis Oculata) shows a lot more single-cells, some of them congregated around some "other stuff" (a confirmed scientific term).

Does anyone out there have any experience with Semicircle Angle in a coral tank.I would like to know how far I can go with my semi.I sold my corals but am regretting it.I tried a threadfin and a semi to start with but I miss my coral.I had bits of zoos and other polyps left that were starting to spread but the threadfin dallad the zoos yesterday so he is doing aptasia duty in the sump until he gets a home.I really would like to keep my semi though as he is a Durban caught specimen.

Wonder if anyone can help. I am sitting with a tank 250 mm x 500 mm x 300 h. Corner overflow box ( almost 20 mm space from rim of tank to water level). Here is my problem, as soon as I add flow to the tank (using small via aqua powerhead just over 100 l / hr...cant really as the sticker is worn off :P) it creates a "whirlpool" type effect thus having drips over the sides.
The only time it doesnt do this is when I put the pump on one of the "long" sides (which is cool now while testing but not practical for where it needs to fit), could this be because of the long narrow design ?
Really stumped as I cant keep on lowering the overflow

Oh and royal angelfish, does anyone have one? they are just sooo stunning im afraid my eyes will fall out. Oh and Sohal tang/surgeonfish, does anyone have one?? 2 of them attacked me yesterday after i accidentally hovered over their babies:P
Thanks in advance and will be posting all my millions of pics ASAP

I have a brand new Buyo 550 (138l) which has finished its' maturation. I initially put LR in it and arag-alive substrate and let the tank mature for just over a month.
A week ago, I put in the first three inmates: 2 Clowns and a Starfish.
All water parameters are fine (I have been monitoring them regularly).
Two days ago, I noticed that the larger Clown had a growth on one ventral.. a whitish blob that protrudes out of the fin by about 2 or 3 millimeters.
It doesn't seem to worry her - she is feeding ravenously and swims about happily. Her eyes are clear.
Having done some research, I am presuming that this is cauliflower disease and am hoping that someone can confirm this, or tell me what it is.
Thanks very much. Please excuse the lousy pics... I am still getting used to shooting fish!!

Stupid question I know but...
How does one run a QT tank ?
I know it's a seperate tank with its own water that's not shared with your main tank.
Does it have substrate, lights, sump etc. ?
Are you suppose to run it all the time or do you drain it and only fill it when you have new/problem ls to care for ?
pls educate me on this one.

So I thought today I'd start a new thread regarding my new setup!!! Boy was I wrong............
Quick background: My dad-in law had a border living with him, guy didn't pay rent, they kicked him out and he left his tanks! 6 Months down the line he said the in laws can have it, he's not interested anymore. I had one quick glance at them and thought, hey, I can use these for my marine setup...........:nono:, dad said I can have them, good price......... FREE!!!!! One condition, I take it, lock, stock and barrel. WTF, who would say no? (both tanks about 10 months old)
1st tank (supposed to be my DT), 1.5m x 45 x 45. Not very high or wide enough, but I thought, it's at least a start, and at that price......... will do. It also has a over flow on the one side which I would have drilled and fitted a Durso.
2nd tank (for the sump) 1.2m x 45 x 45. Just add a few pieces of glasss and there we go......
The Toppie was even kind enough to deliver the tanks to me. So last night he arrives. First thing I notice (could kick myself for not noticing it before) is the glass thickness........wait for it............4mm!!!!!!!!!! Yes that's right folks 4mm!
Is this even safe for FW????
So now I'm sitting with 2 tanks I can't use, filled with bath water, and 4 big, but butt ugly fish I don't want. I can't even begin to describe my dissapointment :(

Hi,
In my battle against cyno I dumped an airstone in my sump last night.
Within 30min the water was as clear as, well, glass.
The water has never been this clear/bright.
Anyone know why ?
O, I am the one who had an accident with (over)dosing carb(baked bicarb) on sunday, maybe this + the extra air did something ?

Hey Guys
Been doing some serious reading over the last couple days as I am starting my new Nano.
Just need to ask if there are any ideas for mods to add a skimmer (if in your opinion) it is completely necessary. And possibly upgrade the lighting.
I have removed all the bio balls & carbon from the filter at the back. There is about 5-6cm of playsand for the substrate. Filled with R/O water & used Tetra marinesalt.
Salinity is at 1.026
Ph-8.2
No2-0
No3-0
Nh3/4-0
Tank has been running for about a week. Will add live rock tomorrow in place of the bio balls and carbon aswell as in the display tank.
I also have a sun sun 'powerhead/wavemaker' rated @ 6000lph.
Pic I got off the net untill I can upload images of the nano.

Why are some threads visable in the "home screen" in the recent threads and some only visable in other places. I have come across a number of threads which have either had a recent reply on and other I have replied on myself, however they are seemingly "hidden" from the masa main home screen??
There is a thread which wasn't getting any response however it is not visable - I stumbled across it by accident in viewing the "live feed" which I am almost never viewing - most of the time I am at the home screen

Hey all,
I have recently been the extremely fortunate beneficiary of Johan v.A's generosity - in the form of receiving his old nano - a resun DMS400!! THANK YOU JOHAN!!! So chuffed! A lovely little unit! My mantis will be moving from his little 20L cottage to this pimped out crib! ;-)
So a while ago I got some nice live rock for very cheap, but its seething with bryopsis... :-( So i was wondering if this was not the perfect opportunity to cook the bryopsis-infested rock.
If I set up the new tank all nicely, but completely blacked out and run the cycle with the bryopsis rocks in the blacked out tank this should take care of things no? I know the coraline will die too.. But quite frankly a small price to pay IMO... It can always get seeded with new coraline when its done cycling.
Any comments?

Hi
.
I want to make diy frozen fish food, and need some of the experienced chef's advice!
.
I wanted to buy frozen food like hake, mussel, calamari and prawn tails today, but saw that it contains "20% glazing". Don't know what the glazing is, but according to the label, it keeps moisture in... Is this safe to use? Should I just wash it properly with RO water?
.
There are also shrimp tails, but it is cooked, I guess I should leave that out, right?

Hi, I collected these this morning...some I already have in my tank others are new to me. What's their compatibility like in a fully stocked reef system
these I have:
these are new to me:
the last two (type) seems to go on a walk about out of the bucket a lot...
here is my questions with regards to bringing them back:
Can i bag them...how many per bag? easier to transport in bags.
I'm keeping them in air-rated buckets....for another 6 days, before I retrun to Jozi....they mixed with some hermits, will they be OK to keep together?
Will they turn cannibal and eat each other? Do i need to feed them?
appreciate your input.

What would be the easiest species to keep? What are the general requirements for gorgonians?

I am researching phosphate control for a large system and am looking at dosing and control methods.apparently some zoos and large systems were or are using lanthanum chloride dosing. I have also found some references to ferric chloride, strontium chloride
And calcium hydroxide. The lanthanum
Looks promising. Any thoughts or experience?

Hi all
I tested my RO water the other day to find it has a pH of 9.4, this along with a TDS of 25 thought I need to replace my filters.
I changed my pre-filter about 2 months back so I just got a new membrane from Water Boy. after flushing it I've tested my new RO water to find it now only has a TDS of 2, but it still has a pH of 9.4:whistling: thought this was funny so tested the tap water and it has a TDS of 84 and pH of 9.
I'm now confused, isn't RO meant to be about 7 or just below? Isn't 9 extremely high for tap water?
Where to from here as I'm worried that the high pH may damage the new membrane? how do I get it down?
PS, as I'm using RO though a Kalk stirrer, with a pH of 9 I don't think the kalk is dissolving into the water?

Hi all!
Just an update on the progress on my marine setup...
Bought a Real MH + T5 combo light from Lanzo on Saturday and installed it today, what a mission! Anyways, it is intalled and is looking good...
I have filled up the tank with RO water and it has been running for 4 days now. I have got the temprature up to 24.7 degrees and I am ready to add the salt (I know I am nots supposed to in the tank, but I am just to lazy to carry around all that water!)
My next project is the electrics. I want to make a DB board with built in timers. I have tried Builders Warehouse, but they do not have the plastic DB boards that use those small circuit breakers. Does anybody have an idea where I can get those DB boards and some suggestions on design?
Also I want to buy some LR this coming weekend to start cycling the tank.
P.S. How do I post a picture!?

Hi, I was poking around in the pools yesterday and I saw a white fan worm about 10cm across the head. It was under a deep ledge and just the head and tip of the tube was sticking out, but it got me thinking. Can you collect these, if you can get to them and how? Also how do you collect zoas off the rocks? I saw some insane lumo green ones! A bit off topic here, but could you keep those tiny baby crabs that you sometimes see on the rocks? Would they do any harm in your tank?
-
Would just like to have some opinions, with a lot of different tanks (like I have) obviously nets , scrapers etc gets swapped around. I use a light bleach solution to disinfect equipment after working in a tank with desease. How does other guys do it ?

i have a ts 3 skimmer that is modded with bubble plate and circulation nozzle(monster skimmer now). i noticed my calcium was low even though dosing. found out magnesium low so decided to use epsom salts as magnesium supplement. i mixed five mls of epsom salts in 1.5 litres of ro and drip fed it into tank over a couple of hours. it seems the surface tension on bubbles is increased and skimmate is increased. the deduction is that if magnesium is low, one of the consequences other than inability to keep calcium levels up and excessive precipitation on heaters, is low skimmer performance? opinions and experiences ?

Hi, I was just wondering if anybody has plans for a shop in DBN? I have yet to find a trustworthy LFS with decent stock and advice. It is so annoying seeing the livestock that comes into Gauteng and the Cape and not having it in DBN. And no, I am not a fan of paying courier charges and taking ur chances with delivery, I have a friend that works for one of the bigger courier companies and I am amazed that anything survives shipping with them!

Hi Guys, 20 hour power outage again yesterday. So frustrating.
I have a Gennie that is wired into the house so during the day I have no problems (assuming somebody is home).
The problem is I can not run the genny at night. 98 DB will drive the neighbors insane. I shut it down at 8:30pm last night.
Obv I can't leave the tank off at night. So today I went out and decided to build a inverter setup to run the tank at night. Just not sure if I did it right.
I have 4 gel batteries like the ones they use on alarms. These are connected in parallel to a 550watt inverter. I then output this to the return pump that is 65watts. I do plan to put a small emergency heater on but was testing now to see how it works. The return works but every now and again it jinks like it is turning off and on quickly. I am charging the batts now just in case but each of them is at 13.83 volts so that sounds about right to me.
Any ideas?

Hi
Hatching brine is easier than changing a babies nappy, and I have basically mastered the process.
But, gettingn those little buggers to grow to adult size is where I keep on running into brick walls. What am I doing wrong?
After hatching (about 18-26hrs) I place the nauplii in a growout container. Then I feed them with Brightwell AminOmega, which I dissolve. I make the water in this container with regular marine salt. I airate one large bubble of air every 2nd second or so.
The brine are doing well, great in fact. They grow to about 2 days old, and then I normally do a 20% water change or so. Then after I have done this, I have a sudden massive crash, and all brine shrimp die.
What am I doing wrong? I cant get them to grow past two days.
Advice needed please.

Hi all, I was just wondering what one has to do to become a sponsor on this forum? And do they actually get checked out so far as the quality of LS and products that they sell? My reason for asking is that when you see that a certain LFS is a sponsor , you automatically are put to trust them in what you're being sold but sometimes it's not the case.
Is it all about paying the forum an advertising fee and they are given the status of trusted supplier?
Just asking because of a recent bad experience and also for noobs that are not so sure where to purchase? :wave2:

Hi everyone!
I'm in Margate KZN at the moment. I got my permit for inverts just before the holidays, so for the last couple of days, I have been going around searching for some awesome animals that I can take home. I have the book "Two Oceans" to help with identification, but it doesn't give all the important info! I'm a bit lost when it comes to info on the local anemones...
Can I keep them in my reef tank? This is some of the spesies that I could identify:
Plum anemone (Actinia mandelae).
Natal anemone (Anemonia natalensis).
Sandy anemone (Aulactinia reynaudi).
Crevice anemone (Anthopleura michaelseni).
There might be other spesies aswell... Can anyone help? I would appreciate info from someone who has experience keeping them (I think RiaanP has some in his tank).
Thanks in advance!

Once upon a time there was a 1.2 meter tank which belonged to Danie and another 1.2 meter tank which belonged to Gawie. Together they became
Podville.
These are the adventures of the citizens of Podville as they embark upon the journey of a lifetime. Join them as they settle uncharted lands, build communities and fight off marauders. Opportunity awaits those who are brave enough to journey across dry land to arrive upon this virgin territory.
Chapter one:
On the first day there was a stand, there were pipes, and there were the tanks. But there was no water. Then the Gods in their benevolence fetched 312.5 liters of Natural Sea Water and saw that it was good. Then they added life. (Microbe-Lift Special Blend an Microbe-lift Nite-Out II from Henk) This also was good. Then the overflow had a leak. They saw that this was not good.
The water went back into the cans, rock and sand went back into buckets and there was much gnashing of teeth. Dry once more, there was called upon tar to seal that which would leak and cast away doubt. A week went by and back went the sand, the rock and the Natural sea water.
Once again was added the Special Blend and The Nite-Out II: For LO! That which may smelleth most foul may giveth forth the most pleasant of results.
Then the Gods in their wisdom raised four 35 Watt T5's and there was light. Gently the rays caressed the 100% artificial yet deftly crafted rock landscape. Surely no greater artist can exist than HIM who created these rocks?!
The Gods appraised their handiwork and was pleased. Then there was rest, for while their eagerness was great, the little things would not be hastened in their labours.

Hi all, I was doing some tank maintenance last weekend and placed a towl on the floor to work on. The towl eventually got wet (on tiles) and when standing on it bare foot touching the water, I got a light shock. When I put the return pump off, this did not happen. When standing on dry tiles no shocking.
Is this an indication that the pump is on it's way out or what?
Confused...

For all the CT guys out there, who is the best (and most reliable in CT terms) to get galvanising done at. The reason for my asking is I used oakes (dont want to mention names in case of a lawsuit), and from start to fisnish galvanising a stand became a f-up.
Firstly getting the order wrong from shotblast & Galv to shotblast only resulting in leadtime going from 5 - 7 days to 10 days. Then when finally collecting the stand, it was done like : shit : (example...the hang wires for dipping was galvanised onto the stand, not removed & touched up etc). Happily they were willing to re do the Galv, but upon phoning earlier I found out it will only go on the last run (as it is a re-work) and that happens just before closing time !!!! So now I can only collect tomorrow
So for future reference I would like to know who uses who so to speak

Hi Guys
Are there really no other options for aquarium controllers than going out and buying a profilux for R20 000???
Anyone tried importing one?
Anyone here use another brand?
What would a good starter package include?
Thanks.

Evening, hope some one can assist me. I got a canister filter (placed inside a plastic container) with my 95 liter tank. Today we had a 45 minutes power cut and when I got home I found that about 6 liter water has been sucked out of the tank out by its seal on top of the filter and into the plastic container. Is there anything I can do to prevent this happening again?

Hi Reefers
Today we are landing the following 3 shipments! YES THREE!!!!
USA and Indonesia are already in the shop!
USA have some nice specimens in it and some of the trusted oldies;)
Look below for the list.
The Indonesia shipment is the one with the SHOCKINGLY GREAT specimens:thumbup::yeahdude::slayer:
The supplier were not able to get all the corals we needed :( - so he added some SHOW SPECIMENS to our boxes and I have not seen this quality before, neither did I ever saw some of the species - like
Australomussa Rowlwyensis
and some variety's that we did not get in the past like
Red Doughnut Coral - Acanthophyllia spp.
So I am in the candy store AGAIN & I LOVE IT!!:thumbup:
Then Sri Lanka are landing later today with some nice species as well!
NOW WE ARE STOCKED AGAIN, 2010 soccer or not:P

Im not sure if this was discussed before,if so plz guide me to the thread.
What Iwant to know is what is the difference between feeding:
Krill Vs Plankton Vs Brine Vs Mysis.
Is it all just various types of food or are ther specific for certain fish?
Is ther any nutritional value?
Do they all add PO4 to the tank regardless of the excess juices drained?
Who uses what meaty foods and how often?

So now that the hood has come off my Boyu TL450, I can now look at a better skimmer for my systems. I know a lot of peeps are using the Boyu WG308 which i'm guessing is because it fits into the compartment. But without the lid I can look at maybe a hangover unit as well ???
Any suggestions?
My standard skimmer is actually working suprising well and does pull a fair amount of crap out of the water but I rate I can find a better unit.

I have been looking for info about the Foxface, but have come up short - just for those who with just say ":googlenub:"
What is the difference etween the One Spot Foxface and the plain yellow? Or is it simply the same? The information I have found is always speciffic to the one or the other and I can't find factual info distinguishing one from the other other than the spot - so what is the value, or non-value of the spot??
I have one without the spot, he/she is very happy. Eating well, interacts in my tank well, doesn't eat my soft corals at all - just generally a shy fish, other than that, I got no problems with it at all. I was just wondering what the differences were between them

Hi Guys,
I've decided I'm going to be fragging my green candy cane since the skeleton has gotten pretty big, I was thinking of just repositioning all the frags in my tank, but I may be tempted to trade ;)

Hey all,
So I've been running my lil low tech nano on CFLs and two T8 actinics for a while now, and while all my softies have been growing wonderfully, and my LPS has been good, I am seriously thinking of biting the bullet and going T5. I wanted to know what globes I should get.
Plan would be to keep the T8 actinics until the globes expire and then switch those over to T5 as well.
So, what lighting should I get on the tank?
Its a standard two footer, 70L tank, with a fairly deep sand bed (about 7cm)
dimensions: +- 62x32x30
I would like to keep easier SPS in the very upper reaches, but mostly softies and LPS.
prices? kalvin?
THANKS! :-)

Hi Guys
I am busy setting up new system: 1.8m x 1m x 0.8m high. I will be moving my existing livestock into this tank over time.
Low iron front and side panels.
Lighting - ATI Powermodule 8 x 54w T5's
Flow - 2 x AM 15000l pumps, plus my existing tunzi nano's (will see how this goes)
Skimmer by Zayn (Phuturelab) - will see how this works out.
Carbon reactor
Phosphate Reactor
Nitrate reducer/reactor
DSB in sump
11000l return pump - return chamber on left will be increased as just a bit too small for pump to fit into it. Also thinking of increasing height of baffles fro 17.5cm to 25cm.
Any advice and thoughts will be appreciated.

Hi guys
There is a white forgspawn at my LFS that I have been watching for a few weeks, it looks healthy enough and expands hugely during the day. My wife is convinced its the most beautiful coral she has ever seen :P however I'm not sure if this is normal? Do euphyllia bleach in the same manner as anemones? In fact, it's not really pure white, more a very light cream colour.
The coral has been in the shop a while and as I visit fairly often I can see it has not deteriorated at all. Again, to me the coral seems healthy and happy however I want to make sure I am not buying something that is bleached.
Thanks

Hi guys,
Bought a dancing camel shrimp back in April, lately i notice that its picking at all of my corals, more specifically on the meaty parts of the LPS - open brain, blastomusa and candy cane, as well my zoas.
I'd like to catch in and remove it from the tank - however I have a small TL-450, which is already pretty crowed with LR and coral.
Any ideas on how to catch it, or stop it from picking on my corals?

Hey guys,
anyone else have trochus snails as part of their CUC? Mine mow their way through hair algae and leave the rocks literally scrubbed clean. Just wish they'd cover the more rough terrain more often. Whats your experience with these guys? They seldom knock things over too which is nice. They've also been browsing a little cyano that popped up. Loving them!
on a side note, while i was watching my tank last night shortly after lights out and just with actinics the one snail ejected a sort of white mist - pooping or sexyness?
:-) Just in case heres a pic

My Nano Tank:
It is a Magic Wave 102 nano tank with a 102L of water. The display tank has a power head which turns 1200LPH. The filtration first chamber has a small Dymax skimmer with one mode to it, I drilled out the top for the air hose ( works well and have to clean out every 2 to 3 weeks). Then the second chamber has Chem-Pure and foam sponge, the third chamber has a light with my chito and live rock in it. A fourth chamber has ceramic rings and the last chamber has return pump (1300LPH) and the heater. The tank has T5 lighting 24w 2 x white lights and 2 x blue lights. I have a fax on top of the tank for the summer months which cools the tank water up to 2 degrees. The tank runs at 26 to 27 degrees.
I do a 10L water change every week, the water for the water change is heated and air rated 24h beforehand. The chem.-pure and sponges are rinsed out.
The tank is 8 months old and running well.
Attached are some Photos:
The Start
3 to 4 Month old
Now the tank looks like this

I came across this article and found it to pretty useful. Hopefully our newbies will benefit from it.
Filtration systems are the backbone of our saltwater aquariums. Without some method of breaking down waste produced by the organisms in our aquariums, our fish and invertebrates would end up, for lack of a better term, living in a cesspool of their own waste.
Our #1 priority as aquarists is to provide the highest quality water we can for our wet friends to live in.
In this article, I will talk about the different methods of filtration available and what type of tanks they are suitable for, along with some of the most popular types of filter media to help maintain the best water quality in your own aquarium.
In an article I had written last year called
Things to know before buying an aquarium filter, I discussed some of the things a filter system can do for you, four of the most popular filter systems and some items to consider before purchasing a filter. This article is a good starting point if you are not too familiar with the different types of filters out there and the advantages of each.
The article doesnt, however, break down which filter systems are best for certain aquarium types and that is something we will address in this article as well as touch on the most popular types of filter media.
FILTERS
Lets start with talking about filtering a reef tank. The big question many people have: Is there one best way to setup a filter system for a reef tank? The simple answer is No, there are many different ways to filter a reef tank and they can all work very well. But one thing 99% of all reef tanks have in common is the use of
live rock (covers the biological needs in a reef tank) and a
protein skimmer (covers the mechanical needs in a reef tank).
Live rock is rock that has been harvested from the ocean in tropical locations such as Fiji, Tonga and the Marshall Islands. The rock is very porous and will act as a biological filter for your tank as it will contain beneficial bacteria to help breakdown fish waste. People will disagree on how much rock to use in a reef tank, but generally it is recommended to use anywhere between ½ to 2 pounds per gallon of water. Live rock must also be properly
cured before any livestock is added to the tank.

A
protein skimmer (sometimes referred to as a foam fractionator) will remove organic pollutants from your tank. Protein skimmers create tons of tiny micro bubbles inside of their reaction chambers that dissolved organics are attracted to. Due to their hydrophobic properties (the need to get away from the water), the combined bubble and dissolved organics will rise up a tube and foam over into a collection cup. The end result is a very smelly, tea to coffee colored liquid called skimmate.
Many people have successfully run their reef tanks with only live rock and a protein skimmer, but other types of filters can be incorporated to perform an even better job. For example, a canister filter or fluidized bed filter can be used to help with chemical filtration (i.e. the use of carbon or phosphate media for example). Ive tallied up some of the advantages/disadvantages of the most popular types of filtration for reef aquariums and recorded my findings below:
Canister Filters & Hang on Back (HOB) Filters
PRO: They are excellent for adding carbon or other filter media to the tank and can even be good mechanical filters to help trap larger particles.
CON: If they are not cleaned often (every 2-4 weeks) they can lead to the build up (or source) of nitrates and phosphates in the tank due to food or other organics being trapped inside. Water will sometimes flow around the filter media instead of through it (in other words, water will take the path of least resistance).
- Fluidized Bed Filters
PRO: One of the best choices for using filter media, such as carbon or phosphate, in an aquarium. Due to their upflow principle, they will give the best contact between the tanks water and the filter media of choice.
CON: It is generally not recommended to use more than one type of media inside of a fluidized bed filter, so multiple units may be required for using different filter media at the same time in a tank.
- UV Sterilizers
PRO: They can be very useful for controlling free-floating algae and algae blooms. Properly setup, they can help reduce free-floating parasites.
CON: UV sterilizers do not discriminate against good or bad organisms that flow through them, so they can kill off some of the good microorganisms in your tank.
- Ozone
PRO: When used properly, many aquarium hobbyists find their aquarium water is so clear, it almost looks as if there is no water in the tank.
CON: Ozone can be harmful if not setup properly. They are generally used with a protein skimmer and the air leaving the skimmer MUST be filtered by carbon to prevent any ozone from entering the air.
Refugiums
PRO: Generally very good at nutrient export (mainly phosphate and nitrates, which are utilized by the algae growing in the refugium), refugiums provide a safe haven for microorganisms such as amphipods and copepods that can help feed fish and corals. They can also help stabilize the pH in an aquarium by utilizing the CO2 produced in the main tank when the lights are off. Read more about refugiums here.
CON: While small ones are available, in general they can take up quite a bit of space. Similar to the display tank, they will require regular maintenance to keep them running properly (such as pruning algae on at least a monthly basis).
- Wet/Dry Filters
PRO: Very good at breaking down toxic ammonia into the less toxic nitrate. They provide an aerobic environment for bacteria to work in (to break down waste), so they dont deplete oxygen from the main tank.
CON: They are almost too efficient for a reef tank and may cause nitrate levels to build up too fast. The live rock in the tank should be plenty of biological filtration.
- Deep Sand Bed (DSB) or Plenum
PRO: When setup properly and given time, they will help create a denitrifying area in the sand bed (or void area) that reduces nitrate levels within the aquarium.
CON: For some people, a 4-6 deep sand bed or remote area can take up too much space in the tank. There are mixed opinions on the long-term efficiency of these methods; some feel they trap nitrates and eventually release them into the tank.
Nitrate Filter (Denitrator)
PRO: Very efficient at reducing nitrates within the aquarium.
CON: Can be difficult to set up; fairly expensive and generally only suitable for larger tanks.
So what about hobbyists that dont want to keep a reef tank with live corals and other invertebrates, but do want a saltwater tank with beautiful and colorful saltwater fish?
The truth is filtration for a fish-only (FO) tank doesnt have to differ all that much from filtration on a reef tank in regards to setup. Eric Borneman wrote an article,
Fish Only vs. Reef Only Whats the Difference? that breaks down some of the major differences. To quote Eric, I would recommend that using natural reef methods for all marine aquaria be the preferred method for both the success of the marine life, as well as the success of the aquarist. I couldnt agree more with his statement.
Of course, if you cant or dont want to use live rock in your tank, what choices do you have? Going back to the main topic of this article (filters), you will need a filter system that provides your tank with the best possible biological, mechanical and chemical filtration possible. Many feel a
wet/dry filter system is your best choice, as they are very efficient at breaking down the waste fish produce. All of the filtration choices mentioned earlier for reef tanks can be used on a FO system and the same pros and cons will apply.
FILTER MEDIA
Filter media includes products like
carbon,
phosphate removers and ion exchange resins. These products help reduce and remove organics that cause problems like smelly water, yellow tinting to the water and problematic algae caused by phosphate and/or nitrate problems. They work by absorbing or adsorbing different organics/chemical from the water, helping to maintain high water quality within the tank.
Carbon: Carbon is probably the most widely used filter media sold today. There are two main reasons carbon is used; to help keep water clear from yellowing and to help with odors from the tank. As water passes by the carbon, it will remove pollutants that cause these two issues within an aquarium. This can be accomplished by placing carbon in a filter media bag and setting it inside a canister filter or by using it loosely inside of a fluidized bed filter.
- Phosphate Removers: The second most popular type of filter media helps rid aquariums of phosphates. High phosphate levels can actually inhibit corals and other calcium based organisms from being able to properly utilize calcium and magnesium. High phosphate levels can also lead to excessive algae growth. The two most popular types of phosphate remover media are the iron (ferric oxide) based media (Phosban, RowaPhos or Pura Phoslock for example) and the alumina based media (Phosphate Sponge or Phosguard).
Both have their advantages and disadvantages but, generally speaking, work fairly effectively. For reef tanks, most prefer iron-based media over alumina-based media since iron-based media can filter the tank for a longer period of time. Most alumina-based media needs to be removed within 24-48 hours after use. Another advantage that many overlook or simply dont realize is that most phosphate removers will also remove silica from the tanks water (once the phosphates have been removed). Silicates can sometimes cause outbreaks of brown algae on the aquarium glass, sand bed and/or on the rocks in the tank.
Nitrate Media: Like phosphate, high nitrate levels can lead to problematic algae growth within the aquarium. Unlike fish, most invertebrates cannot tolerate high levels of nitrate. Many of the nitrate media products on the market are extremely porous and allow for anaerobic bacterial denitrification deep within the pores of the media (Nitrate Sponge and De*Nitrate are examples). Others, like Purigen or HyperSorb, are synthetic adsorbents that help remove nitrate (along with other organics).
- Mixed Resin Media: There are a few companies out there who make filter media that combines carbon with ion exchange resins, such as Boyds Chemi Pure and APIs Bio-Chem Zorb. These types of mixed resins come already in a bag and give the user a product that not only has the benefits of carbon, but also can help ionic balances (more stable pH).
With the proper filtration system, you will find your aquarium inhabitants will not only survive, but thrive within their glass (or acrylic) walls. But please dont make the mistake of thinking that just because you have an oversized filter system or you use extra filter media on your tank that you can overstock, overfeed or neglect your normal maintenance. Every tank still needs some hands-on time to keep it running properly.

iv got a tank thats been running for about 2 months, livestock is one baby zebra lionfish, live rock and a few leather corals.
My lionfish which will be moved to a much larger tank in a few months has 1 or 2 tiny white dots on its tail and i dont knw whether its ich or not, there are no signs ( from what ive read include, rapid breathing, loss of appetite, akward swimming or brushing the tank or substrate).
my question is if i removed the leather corals (to my other tank) could i use copper based treatment in the tank with the fish and live rock ( iv also read that lionfish can be quite sensitive to copper) or not?
i would think i probly couldnt because once i return the corals the copper mite still be present in small traces, but what would you suggest i do because i dont have access to a quarantine tank.
thanks

Hey all,
just now installed two 400w metal halide. One is blue and other is daylight and also have 4 of t5 lights each 56w.
my Q: when Daylight metal halide is on the water looks yellowish why? is it ok or need change ?
2.Is it ok if I keep all the above lights on for 8H on 600L tank ?
3.In sump have ATS with total 110w light and refugium with 70w light So I am wondering is there will be any problem with algae growth in me Display tank.
looool to many QS

Not sure how serious this is... I turned off my skimmer about 5 hours ago and dosed mb7, when I turned skimmer back on, the skimmer cup filled within 30 minutes. What could be happening here? Tank looks fine, all polyps fully extended

Considering the recent discussions on lighting, can the differences be noted so that we can all be properly informed as to the differences in the different T5 lighting globes. The combination of globe choises and what makes the different manufacturers so much better than the cheaper or more expensive globes.
Why should one spend big $$$ on pricey "brand name" opposed to the Reeftek globes which seem to be the more commonly found globe. The globes wouldn't be available at such vast cost differences if they didn't have significant differences - what are these differences.
Then, What are the optimum combinations of globes to be using in a 4, 6 & 8 globe setup on both SPS and LPS dominated tanks - for now we will assume that tank depths are no more then 600mm for maximum light penetration for the corals and no MH included in the comparison info.

I have a pair of fire gobies and the one has gone into hiding for the last couple of days.
I actually thought it had died.
I still haven't found the exact hiding spot.
Should I get my hopes up?
I can't find much on breeding them.

I would like to build a cryptic zone and space is a major problem. I am thinking of mounting it on the stand behind a filter that is attached to the rear panel of my tank. This filter was intended to be a DSB but the water flow is much to high over it and nothing that I can see lives in the sand. The idea is to move the DSB sand into the cryptic zone and then to have some rock instead of sand in it.
I am planning to increase the shelf size by mounting a shelf on the area where the piece dead coral is lying up to where the pump box is. The overhanging part will be supported with two legs going down to a brace in the stand frame.
The CZ size will be 280 x 200 and 600 deep with overflow running into the DT. I am thinking put about 180mm deep sand in the bottom and probably three - four shelves higher up.
Your advice will be much appreciated.

Hey guys. I got a via aqua skimmer and the pump is blowing out in stead of sucking in. It started the other day after doing the lights (switching plugs on and off). I then took the skimmer out, stripped and cleaned the pump, nothing was wrong, it worked again for two days and has changed direction again by itself. I have changed over the wires on the plug and it does not help. PLEASE HELP!

Yes NJ and advDiver will be leaving MASA on 26 June 2010. We will be climbing aboard an air Egypt bird destination Cairo. We will be picked up in Cairo and whisked away to Sharm El Sheikh where we will board the Snefro Love (
SNEFRO LOVE live-aboard | Egypt Red Sea | Aquatours Scuba Diving Holidays) for six days (24 dives) of awe inspiring diving in the Red Sea. Yes we will be diving the Thistlegorm wreck and ras Mohammad sanctuary amongst others. After the liveaboard experience we are off to Dehab for a dive or two and then tour the pyramids and Nile river.
WOW we are soooooo excited and i must have packed and unpacked my gear at least three times every day. Decisions whether to include the 7cm rad sail for surfing the huge sand dunes are an issue at the moment, cant quite make up my mind. We will just have to quad bike the dunes as well.
Naturally i will be on the lookout for Red sea coral and fish collectors. Hopefully a legal source can be obtained.
On sooner are we back on the 10 July then we head off to Mauritius in November. I will be sourcing gem tang and other fish availability. But the exciting thing is that i have just booked an India trip in April 2011. Yes we are going to see the Elephants swim the ocean. Eat you hearts out guys.
Diving in India
Goa on the Mainland,
Goa is a little bit of Rio de Janeiro meets Ibiza. But then Goa is a lot of things. This little seaside state, with an identity that's a seamless blend of Portuguese-Latin influence and Indian tradition, was crackling enough to have been one of the Millennium destinations of the world.
The waters are safe and temperate, the absence of riptide currents making them ideal for learners and novice divers. And when you aren't wiggling in and out of your wetsuit, you could be sunbathing or bungee jumping, visiting temples or haunting the flea market. Like we said, Goa is a lot of things.
The three hundred years of Portuguese rule has left an indelible imprint on the collective psyche of Goans. It shows in their music, their architecture and their culture. It's also why Goans make the most wonderful vindaloo this side of the Indian Ocean.
Dive Sites
The marine life of Goa is similar to that found in Maldives. The presence of wrecks in Spanish and Portuguese galleons and World War II ships make the fish life prolific.
Grand Island
Much of the local diving is conducted around this island. Some of the sites near the island include Suzy's Wreck, Davy Jones Lockers, Sail Rock, Turbo Tunnel, Surge City, Uma Guma Reef, and Bounty Bay.
Angria Bank
A four-hour high-speed boat ride takes you to this world-class dive site 120 miles from Goa. A vast underwater landmass about half the size of the state of Goa, it offers an amazing wealth of coral and fish. A 'live-aboard' is available with the local dive center to make diving at this site an unforgettable experience.
Pigeon Island
This rocky outcrop has interesting marine life as well as good visibility.
Malvan Shoal
2 hours away from the capital city of Panaji exist some interesting shallow sites in the water between Vengurla and Malvan.
Andaman and Nicobar group of islands in the Bay of Bengal
This is the closest you get to feeling like Robinson Crusoe. 362 volcanic islands scattered in the Bay of Bengal, with only 37 of these being inhabited. These lush green islands have colourful historical past, with strings of invasions by the French, Dutch, Japanese and British & raging wars between settlers and the native tribes. The Cellular Jail, where hundreds of Indian revolutionaries were imprisoned during the Indian freedom struggle, still stands tall. Descendents of these political prisoners and the local tribes of the area are the inhabitants of modern day Andaman and Nicobar.
The tropical rain forests that loom close to the seashore are home to unique species of birds, and to tribes that still haven't learned to use fire. Andaman is an experience quite unlike another. And if you find yourself using more mosquito repellent here than even before, you'll be using a lot more camera rolls as well.
Dive Sites:
Around Port Blair
The waters around Andaman have spectacular bio-diversity, and dive conditions that are ideal for an experienced diver.
Cinque Island
One of the best dive destinations in the island, it has clear emerald waters with a visibility of up to 80 feet. The deep dive offers a terrific variety of marine life including back coral and sightings of sharks, and is ideal for the experienced diver.
Rutland Island
The shallow waters here have a good representation of most small fish and coral, and is a good place for training open water divers.
Snake Island
Awesome rock faces and a spectacular dive landscape. Marine life includes Trigger fish, Grunts, Goatfish and Rays.
Havelock Island
This island is located approximately 4 hours from the Port Blair airport by inter-island ferry. The dive centre located on the island offers a wide range of largely unexplored dive sites rich in underwater marine life.
Lakshawdeep group of islands in the Arabian Sea
Be warned. There are some things that are really hard to find in Lakshadweep. Like fast cars, shrinks, or tranquillisers. They do have all that water though. Bright and clear as liquid glass, fringed by white stretches of sand where the only throngs you'll ever see are of the sandpipers on the shore. And you could sleep by the seaside with the night sky as your ceiling. Therapy has never felt better.
Geographically similar to that other divers' haunt, Lakshadweep is like Maldives without the crowds. 400 kilometers off the coast of Kerala, this group of 36 coral islands and atolls can be reached by a twenty-hour sea journey from Cochin. Of the ten inhabited islands, only two Bangaram and Kadmat, are open to foreigners and there are dive centers on both these islands. The lagoons are home to a spectacular world of marine life, so unexplored, you may well have a site named after you.
Dive Sites
Around Kadmat Island
Surrounded on the eastern and western side by the lagoon, Kadmat is the ideal haven of solitude. This little island has an astonishing variety of marine flora and fauna. Some of the dive sites explored till date are beyond any sort of written description, they are ethereal moments of pure wonder.
The Wall
A wall of soft coral starting at 12 meters and cascading down to the deep blue. Dive amongst turtles as resplendent as their surroundings.
Sting Ray City
A 21 meter dive along the sand dunes, abundant with Sting Rays.
Cross Currents
Located between the islands of Amini and Kadmat, drift dive along with schools of Snapper, Fusilier and Sharks at 15-21 meters.
Jack Point
A drift dive between 21-30 meters with different types of fish like Jack Fish and King Fish.
Garden of Eden
An abundance of table coral at 12-25 meters along with varieties of small fish and Groupers.
East Channel
Located between 9-20 meters an abundance of soft coral and tuna.
Around Bangaram Island
A teardrop shaped island surrounded by a continuous strip of creamy sand. The temperate blue-green waters of the Indian Ocean are an irresistible invitation to the scuba diving fraternity of the world. The exquisite black coral formations along with Angel Fish, Clown fish, Butterfly, Surgeons, Groupers, Mantas, Sting Rays and wondrous marine life are found in the Lakshadweep.
You can also visit the wreck of the Princess Royal at 32 meters, sunk in a battle over two hundred years ago, or if luck is on your side, have the pleasure of being escorted by a pod of 10-20 Dolphins.
Visit the dive sites Manta Point, Shark Point and The Wall. Dive amidst a submerged reef with shoals of Giant Parrotfish.
Bangaram - a place on the edge of the world. A bit of paradise.
Every destination is completely unique in its own way, and they all have widely different dive conditions and marine life.
Beaches of India
Beaches in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Andaman & Nicobar the most unique Island state of India with beaches and coastal areas still untouched and unspoilt makes it an ideal beach holiday destination. Even if there aren't many beach resorts present on these tropical islands, still the climate and isolation has given these islands a prominence among the best tropical beach islands and a paradise of exquisite marine life.
Corbyn's Cove And Chirya Tapu - picturesque beach, ideal for sea bathing and sun-basking.
Radhnagar & Vijaynagar Beach - real exposures of unpolluted nature of Andman & Nicobar Islands for an environment lover.
Harminder Bay Beach - beautiful beaches 100-km from Port Blair connected by Inter Island shipping services.
Karmatang Beach - turtle nesting ground being developed as tourist complex in northern part of Middle Andaman
Ramnagar Beach - sandy beach situated at Diglipur Islands connected by two daily boat services from Mayabunder and from Port Blair twice a week.
While Lakshadweep has the clear blue lagoons of coral atolls, Andaman and Nicobar are volcanic islands surrounded by deep, undisturbed waters that have an astounding bio-diversity. The third destination Goa has many exciting things to do, on land as well as in water.
Your adventure will begin long before your diving ever does. World class diving often lies in out of the world places. Getting there may not always be easy. Travel routes that run across valleys and plains, through breathtaking landscapes, and at the end of it all, the experience of diving in sites so pristine and untouched - of which you could probably be a pioneer in one of the last remaining diving frontiers - India.

The owner and aquarist of a LFS came to see my setup at home I was having problems and he saw I had deadrock and he asked me where i got it I bought it. online 50lbs, he said not to use it because it is LIME rock and in his experience limerock removes the magnesium of the saltwater. He said I was looking for trouble with those rocks. My intentions were to get 50lbs deadrock and 50lbs liverocks and aquascape w/ it then cycle tank to get ready to introduce my corals.
To all , is limerock harmful to a marine reef setup? I have live caribbean sand and live rock in my setup cycling for 2wks now. I checked amonia, nitrite, nitrate, and Ph levels all are 0 and my Ph is 7.8 is this ok. ? Should i be using a skimmer while cycling tank in my new setup? I see skimmer cup very clean no foam it's been 2days since setup and I am worried that there is no foam in my skimmer's cup. But again there is no waste to be picked up since I am in the cycling stage of my thank right? The LFS aquarist said to just let the setup run with just liverock and sand for 4 to 6 wks before introducing any fish or corals is this ok? Please excuse me for asking so much questions it's just that I have a 75gal saltwater tank my dream is to be able to put corals and fish in there and hope the way I'm doing it is thhe right way thanks:biggrin:

Our 540lt tank has got space on the one side where compartments are where we can put in the protein skimmer etc.
Is it needed to have a sump compartment underneath your tank, or can we use it in the tank where the compartment is?
Which is better?

Hey all
I am planning on building a 150 X 650 X550 tank with the water level at 500. Its going to be a reef and fish tank. Now I wanted to have a light unit with four T5's and two 150 MH's and a moonlight. This I want to run as follows: 12H00 till 14H00 2 X blue T5's
14H00 till 16H00 2 X white T5's and blue
16H00 till 19H00 2 X 150 MH's
19H00 till 20H00 white and blue T5's
20H00 till 21H00 blue T5's
Rest of the time moonlights.
Now do you think its right this way and is it to much lightning or to little?
O, another thng for a light unit like this is between R8000 and R9000, do you think its beter to buy or to go DIY?

Hey Everyone,
So there has been some talk on the forum about controlling a resun to produce a wave. I've read all the overseas forums on the circuit diagrams for tunze pumps but I can't find any for the resun. Does anyone know how to connect a 555 IC to control the resun to turn on and off at an adjustable interval. I know it can be done, I just need the circuit diagram.
Here is some proof:

Thanks to Tiger (& his weird choice in LS), I have decided to give my 2 C on this issue:
I am not going into ALL the pro's & cons ....just one thing to ponder:
What is more comfortable (for us, & all living creatures for that matter), walking down a 600 mm wide alley with another person approaching or walking into a 2 mtr x 2 mtr space with the same person ??
Just ponder

Hi,
with one or two threads on heaters and water temp and my own experience the last 2 weeks I was thinking:
What is the sea temp at 20 - 100m ?
Why do we want our tanks at 24deg ?
Maybe the temp at depth where our livestock normally occurs is lower than 24deg ??
So I GOOGLED, found some info, still no straight answer for me, I will share what I have found and ask for your opinion.
First, we have easy access to the surface temp measured by satellite, here's an example:
but what happens lower down cause the above measures the top micro meter of the water.
water temp in the sea looses temp according to the following graph:

The thermocline region is where the sharpest decrease in temp occurs and is typically the top 50 - 250m according to some sources.
There are other sources which uses the following graph:
but from this, how close to the surface temp will it be at say 50m, only 1 degree less ? or more ?
So my questions to the MASA community and especially the marine biologists and divers.
What is the typical underwater temp where our livestock occurs for winter and summer?
Do we have to run our tanks at 24 - 26 degrees ?
Do we have to keep this temp up during winter time?

as per subject line if anyone has a couple of these they want to part with im looking for alot...
preferably blue (i know im fussy) but black will do aswell.
so please keep me in mind..

Hi Everyone!! :wave2:
As I said in my previous thread, it was time to do away with the old to make way for the new!!
I'm planning my new marine system and hope that Ill be able to brake some boundaries and tickle your thoughts to help me plan and build my new system.
Let me share some of my thoughts... .
Basically I want to design a system that has a 360 degree viewing angle. Meaning that there should be no overflow box or background on any of the four viewing panels. You should be able to walk right around the tank and only see OCEAN!:slayer:
For now I think the tank dimentions will be Lenth 100cm x Width 100cm x Hight 55cm with a total tank volume of 550litres of water excluding the sump.
The tank will also be rimless..;)
I have given the live stock very carefull thought and would like to keep it a secret for now...! Lets just say that it will be simple, but a powerfull combination!!:1:
I will post a pic of the system's outlay shortly, but please give me your views so we can get cracking!!

Hi guys,
I am totally new to marine aquariums, I recently bought a red sea max 130l reef tank, approximately 3 months ago. Got it set-up and started stocking the tank up with fish impatiently. I stocked my tank up with about seven fish in about a month and a half. Sadly:( I lost all of my fish due to my yellow tang which picked up white spots which spread to the rest of my fish. Tried treating the fish with all different types of medication recommended by the pet shops with no joy.
Did a water change of about 50% after loosing all my fish and ran the tank for about 5 weeks. I just added in two fish yesterday, a spotted jaw fish and a bi-colour blennie I think it is.
All seems well for now.
Any advice?
Regards

Hi Guys
My name is Antoinette and my husband and I are very enthusiastic about marine tanks and started our hobby about 3 months ago. We started with a Malawi tank, but when we saw how beautiful a marine tank is, we decided to give it a go.
So far so good. We are "upgrading" to a 580lt tank. At the moment we have live rock, hermit crab and 6 anemones (very small) and I think jelly fish??
So this is me in a nut shell.
Hope to get some great advice on here...

Got a skrik just now, tanks ph has dropped to 7.8! Quickly realised it's because of the fan not running over the waters surface and therefore minimal evaporation to kick in the kalkstirrer
I'm a little confused as most don't use fans for cooling so how do you keep ph stable? Normally in summer my tanks ph is 8.1 - 8.4, with heavy evaporation and topping up through the kalkstirrer. My calcium demands are pretty high.
Any ideas?

Just a warning, check your heaters.
Especially after last night, the coldest night in a number of years for Gauteng. This morning I found my tank at 16. And I have 3 * 300W heaters in the sump. :(
Well actually 2 working and one faulty. And with the temp that low, and scrubber helping more to cool things down, the 2 that do work could not keep up.
I got another 300w spare, so already replaced.

I've bee running my tanks for almost 4yrs now & this has been boggling my mind for some time now where my sumps level changes in the evening. Sometimes I find my sumps level either higher or lower & it's been a mind boggle since I started these tanks. Tonight I was by a fellow reefer & the same thing happened & both of us were dumbstruck with this level change. I'm positive that this action has something to do with the gravity pull & the moon as like with the tides but I'm not sure what could cause this sudden change.
Has this level change ever happen to any of you?

Presented by Charles & Linda Raabe

Besides acting as a major component of our filtration, Live rock, Base rock and sand also provides our tanks with some diversity of life forms. A few thoughts of my own on this subject. For the sake of using correct terminology, Live rock is NOT bare rock that has some filtering bacteria on it, I don't care who or how many people continue to use the term "live" for what should be correctly called base rock. To state that a base rock is "alive" just because it has had time in a tank to develop some bacteria on it is misleading, if that was the case, then I have "live" glass, and "live" plastic in my tank. As the filtering bacteria will grow on anything you put in the water.

This is what Live Rock, right out of the ocean looks like.
(A). LIVE ROCK = Calcium carbonate or Lava based rock that has been colonized by a multitude of life forms including, but not limited to: corals, sponges, algae, inverts, worms and of course bacteria which forms a habitat unto its own. This type of habitat forms the foundation of all tropical reefs.

Base rock being colonized by coralline algae

I read this some time ago, and decided to copy it here for all to see. Very informative as well as well written byCharles & Linda Raabe. I have contacted them wrt using their valuable information on our website:
There is alot of debate on the depths of sand beds but will post my opinions on their use.
I would recommend an Argonite sand with sugar sized grain or smaller.. This sized grain is best suited for the most common inhabitants of our tanks, it provides a correct home for fish that use it as a burrow, or a hiding/sleeping place such as the wrasses and gobys. It also is the correct environment for all the sand dwelling worms and other inverts.
It also provides more surface area for the beneficial filtering bacterias to grow on.
For those unable to, or unwilling to set up a live deep sand bed, a shallow "dead" sand bed still provides a great amount of surface area for bacteria to live upon. Such shallow sand beds can provide for the bulk of bacterial "filtering" for both the conversion of ammonia to nitrates, as well as for denitrification purposes. Both processes can and do occur on the sand's oxygen rich surface layer. Shallow sandbeds that are not "live" will need to be disturbed once a month to prevent the bacteria from cementing the sand grains together and forming brick hard clumps. Such clumping of the sand prevents any water / gas movement, however small, from happening and could lead to the build up of noxious compounds. The "disturbance" can be simply you swishing the sand around with your hand or siphon cleaning it. The use of a "gravel" siphon cleaner can be used on sand if the siphon hose (output end) is kept raised higher than normal to slow down the force of the siphon, something you will just have to get a feel for to prevent siphoning out your sand. I must stress that this is for shallow (1-2 inches deep) dead, sandbeds. You would never want to disturb a live deep sand bed in any manner.
NOTE: A good method of introducing a sand bed during set up is to just buy dry dead sand and once your initial cycle has completed, then add another thin layer of truly live sand on top of it. By doing so, the live sand will seed the dead sand and in due time, the entire sand bed will be considered "live".
As usual with any given subject within this hobby, there is a lot of myth information concerning deep sand beds. The most popular myth that still abounds to this day is that a deep sand bed is doomed to fail and will become a nutrient sink releasing all kinds of toxins into your tank. Of course there can be problems with deep sand beds, but it is not due to anything inherent about such sand beds and is instead caused by not properly setting it up or correctly maintaining it. A case of blaming the sanded and not ourselves. With everything, once you understand the biology, the myths become apparent as nothing more than poor science and incorrect observations. Hopefully the following links will dispel the garbage that is thought of as being true.

Hi all
just a quick share of the success I have had with getting my water clear.
2 days ago I purchase an Ozone unit from some advise I got from Riaanp at first & confirmation from my fav LFS "Mates"
I have been running it now for 2 days & my water is clear clear!!
I was running carbon & PuriGen & the water was still a yellow - I think the best way to work these things "Carbon" is through a reactor which is the same price as a Ozone Unit.

I have a new Buyo 550 (138l) which is in its' 4th week of cycling (no livestock yet).
This chap must have arrived on the LR, or in the aragalive sand.
I first noticed him about two weeks into the cycle. He tends to hide in a crevice of one of the rocks, with one or two tendrils coming out and feeling around.
Tonight I managed to get a shot of his full body. It's not a great shot, as he moved pretty quickly while I was still trying to set up the shot, so please excuse the blurriness!
He has four legs/tendrils and I am certain that he cleaned a load of brown algae off the white rock (to the right of the picture). He must be about 5 to 6 cms in diameter.
Can anyone tell me what he is and if he is friend or foe.
Thanks

Can ANYONE who is close to Gallo Manor, in Jo'burg, please help MOUSE out?
She got a call from her maid that her tank is leaking - and it has been leaking for most of the day.
Anyone who can get out to Gallo Manor to assist, please PM me, or Neil H, that we can get MOUSE's contact details for you.
Mouse's tank might need an urgent water change - she has enough salt at home. She just needs someone's help to actually go there - and assess the situation, and perhaps help with the water change and to try and stop the tank from leaking.

Hi,
got four of these with the leather I bought.
They 'walk' cause two of them climbed of the leather onto the rocks overnight.
The other two I removed because they were sitting on the leather itself after two days and made the leather angry.
What are they ? Good or bad ? seems they like light cause they move to spots where they receive good light and they'r not bothered by flow.

What i am thinking of in terms of design is a half hexigon shape. The front panel will be 2.0m long and 1.0m wide, with a height of 700mm and a water level of roughly 600mm high. The 2 sides will join at a 45 degree angle from the front to back. Not sure yet of the exact measurements yet as i am still trying to conceptualise it.
Oh yes, before i forget, it will be rimless.
Has anyone got any ideas or suggestions or words of advice?
It will definately be appreciated.

This is really odd, I am trying to get my heaters adjusted to temp and it is impossible when I have 3 thermometers in my tank and all 3 are reading different temp. I took this pic yesterday after teh thermometers were next to one another since the night before, so it isn't like they have just been placed there. What are the suggestions and recommendations - before someone posts it, I can't afford to spend R1500 on a digital thermometer.

Hi all,
Right.
I have gotten to the point in this hobby where I have some fish some coral some shrimp and crab species and now I need to be careful when adding fish... so as not to ruin the harmony.
Maybe some of you can offer some great advise and save me those horrible issues with fish eating up your hard earned cash.
What I currently have:
Filtration:
35Kg Live Rock
DSB with Chaeto suspended above it
Skimmer which still has to be upgraded
DIY Carbon Reactor
Fish and other mobile creatures:
2 sebae clowns 1inch
2 green chromis 1inch
2 domino damsels 2 inch(which are destined for the LFS)
2 fire shrimp 3 inch
2 skunk cleaner shrimp 2inch
1 sally lightfoot crab 2 inch
2 Hermit crabs 1/2- 1inch
1 Lawnmower Blenny 3inch
1 regal Tang 2 inch
1 pencil Urchin
2 zebra Turbo Snail
1 Turbin Snail
1 Mexican Turbo snail
Immobile population:
Frogspawn coral
gogonian coral
sun coral Large Polyp
sun Coral Small Polyp
Chili Coral
Yellow/Gold Zoas
Green Orange Zoas
Red Button Polyps
Green Button Polyps
Lime Green Button Polyps
Large Feather Duster
Hairy Mushrooms
Green Striped Mushrooms
Lord of the Rings Polyps
Green Bristlestar Coral
Now I would like to add a few more peaceful reef friendly fish.
This is where i need you all to give me some suggestions.
Thanks to all in advance.

Hi brenda, i was just wondering if you have read this article and how much of it is true?
Also, if anemones are supposed to have an indefinite lifespan:whistling:, why do they die within years in marine aquaria?
http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/sea...monesurvey.htm

Ok so started out with an Aqua H2O 30gallon tank but soon realised that this wont be good enough so I am getting things ready for a 800x800x600 cube and sump built by Idol Marine. As this is not a cheap hobby have decided to slowly accumulate some hardware. This is what I have so far
Waterboy RO Unit
JNS SK3 Skimmer
JNS Nitrate Reactor
End of this month will look at getting a calcium reactor and phosphate reactor.
Still looking for some decent lights with internal digital timers but so far looks like I will have to import.
Any comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated about other hardware I should be investing in.
Thanks:slayer:

Howzit All,

Hi,
Geoff here, I'm in Australia and live on the Gold Coast. I am an active member of the MASQ (marine aquarium society of queensland), we have just over 200 members.
Just found your forum while watching the Socceroos get demolished by Germany:(:(
I like to keep an eye on forums from different countries so I can be best informed about the hobby.
I have taken a look at some of the featured tanks and I am very impressed, well done.
I keep a 3x2x1.5(tall) tank which is recovering from a few months of neglect because I got a new boat and I've been out in it whenever possible.
Here is the latest shot:
My interests, as you would expect, are watersports, snorkelling and diving and I've done a fair bit of diving in SA mostly around Umkamaas(spelling?) Which was awesome.
I've save the site to my favorites so will definately be checking in.

I would appreciate an ID if possible. She is not the brightest creature - I had to rescue her from the Seio. I also realise I didn't get her size right. Her foot is about 8cm, when she is fully open her tenticles are much bigger then that.
Right so I got tired to try to figure out how to insert the damn picture:razz:, so I attached it in a word doc and there are copies in "My photo's"

Hi All...
:wave2:
I im a small scale tropical fish breeder in Zimbabwe and think its time for me to evolve to marine. Is it possible to have a marine tank in a land locked country? What would i need to start a very basic and relatively cheap tank? I dont want to pay out a lot to start, untill ive got the hang of things and know that im not just going to murder the poor creatures.:(
How does one transport marine life?
Any help would be great!!!
Thanks

Good day all,
Today is indeed a sad day for me :(:(:(:(.
I've decided to sell all my corals/fish/life rock/Red sea pro salt - and maybe my skimmers.
I've decided to convert back to freshwater fish!
I just can afford to keep the marines anymore:(
I was busy today with a water change - switch the pump back on - nothing...
Impeller gone!!!
Ok - to buy a new impeller is not that bad - but the cost just adds up and up..
And to make matters worse is the stupid price increase of 28% of electricity coming July.
I don't want to make money or even try to make my money back by selling everything - as I know that won't be possible. I just want to sell all the life stock at reasonable prices.
And I just need a guide line for that.
I will create a for sale thread as soon as I've some ideas on the prices...
Here is some of my pics of the lifestock for sell:
Nemmies (x2) both big as a dinner plat.
2 x clown fish. (I got some eggs from these two for a long time):) Now in the tank for about 3 years
Sun Coral (This one is eating like a pig!!!):
Will post more corals/photos later on!

I have looked around MASA and have only found vage info and also that of other pin cushions...
I have a yellow pin cushion and I have read that it requires slightly more attention than that of a "normal" one. What is required as far as ideal care is concerned from a lighting, food and flow is concerned. To date I have been feeding my smaller pollyps based corals with Phyto and Zoo-plankton, I have assumed that it to be good for it as far as the food is concerned - it is really more the flow and lighting requirements.
However overall care info will be appreciated.

It's been 14 days since Daddy seahorse gave birth to 426 hungry fry. He has just given birth to his first warning baby. Daddy has been captured and placed in the nursery so that his babies will be safe from the pumps.
I wonder how many he will have this time! :whistling:

Hi guys, in trying to decide what frag tank size to build, i had to redo plenty calculations to form a picture of what would work and what wasnt, with the costs etc. So i've spent a little bit of time making an Excel Calculator. You can put various tank dimensions in and come out with an almost complete idea of what it will cost you, what volumes certain sizes are, the necessary bracing etc. I have also included a calculator for checking what your total electricity consumption will be monthly. Its relatively simple, it just makes your decisions easier to arrive at when you can see all the information in front of you.
Please Note : The bracing is assumed to be single layered euro bracing. Some larger tanks might need a centre brace depending on size which this calculator does not take into account. So please use this calculator in conjunction with Hennies Glass thickness Calculator to ensure you have the required levels of safety:thumbup:
You can find my Calculator
Here
Enjoy

Just for interest (actually I couldnt keep it under wraps anymore !! These guys arrived by surprise today (Thank you to JD167 , we will get them raised for you).

Also still hatching Brine
I have another definite pair in the nano so long, untill I have the brothel built .
Once again thank you to Marcell (all your input, advice and chats about my dream in the making !) JD, thanks for these three & the other one still going strong (although lonely in the sump with just pods & cheato as company !!)
Hopefully soon there might / could / will be a steady supply of CB Bengaii :yeahdude:
PS: sorry for pic quality, they are really really tiny.....
This guy just posed for a pic...no relevance to the subject !!

what is the cause of pH swing at night? something to do with the lighting, but i dont understand how. and how is it stopped? remember reading something long ago about timing the light in you sump to switch on when you DT lights have gone off.

Man dies after eel is inserted into his rectum

Copyright © Leo G. Nico, USGS, Gainesville, FL, Creative Commons
A man has died after a live eel was inserted into his bottom for a joke, according to recent reports.
The 59-year-old chef from Sichuan in China had apparently passed out after a heavy bout of drinking and friends inserted a 50cm Asian swamp eel into his rectum for a bit of fun.
However, the joke wasn't so funny when the man died after suffering severe abdominal pains. Doctors who performed a post mortem on him found the eel in his rectum where it had reportedly gnawed at his intestines, causing heavy internal bleeding.
Practical Fishkeeping reported a very similar story last year in which a medical journal revealed that surgeons had
removed a live eel from a man's rectum.
The man had suffered from rectum, intestine and spleen damage following the insertion of a 50cm swamp eel which he claimed was introduced to "relieve constipation."
The eels are not the only fish to have been removed from patients. In 2008, Practical Fishkeeping exclusively reported that doctors had
removed a live fish from a boy's penis after it "slipped" into his urethra while he was holding the fish in his hand, while simultaneously urinating and maintaining his aquarium.

Hi all
Yesterday morning I awoke to no power at my house. I am not sure what time the power went down but the temp in my tank had dropped to 20 deg. I did not have any backup but I did have an airpump that I put in the tank. I decided that I need a ups anyway and went out and got one and hooked it up to the tank. That was at 11 am. Then when I got home at 6pm there was still no power and the tank temp had dropped to 18. And my newly installed ups died. Not sure if it was not fully charged yet or what. I will check that. So I took the ups down the road to charge for 2 hours while we where out. Got home at 9 pm and still no power. Connected up the return to the ups. All my corals where looking weak and my yellow tang was not in a good way either. Eventually at about 12 last night the power came back on and I went and checked everything. The temp was down to 17 deg.
So after all this things are looking better this morning. The temp is back up to 22 and the corals are looking better and the tang is swimming better that last night.
What do you guys do to keep the temp of the tank up for longer?
It is unusual for the power to be off for so long but how long do you think a tank will survive with just an airstone?

Flappy`s New Starphire 2500l Project
Hi All
As I have been on this forum for many years and have had a built in 5000l tank for many years it is now time to start a new thread for my new tank.
I have sold my house and subsequently my tank is part of the sale as its going with the house, minus my precious livestock and equipment.
My new all glass tank will be 2.5m long and 1m wide by 0.8 high.
It will constructed out of starphire all round with 15mm for the front, back and sides and 19mm for the base.I will use black silicon for the sides, top and bottom.
The stand is 1050 high and 50mm tubing and almost finished. It is galvanised and painted black.
The tank will be viewable from front and back and will divide the lounge into two.
It will have a side overflow.
Flow will consist of 4 Tunze waveboxes as well as 2 x 20 000 litre Tunze streams.
It will be
FOWLR.I have a nice mix of Fiji Premium and Tonga Branch fully cured and waiting.
Lighting I am still deciding on so any input is welcome.
I am also looking for some input for sump dimensions and layout as sump needs to go under the tank and house
DSB,skimmers etc
Anyone who can draw this tank on sketch up and post it here would be appreciated.
I will update as the build progresses

Hey Everyone,
Anyone have any ideas on a temperature controller that can turn my fans on when the temp is to high and then turn on my heaters when it is low.
I found this controller on ACDC:
The controller is R485.00
The probe is R129.00
I think this controller should be able to what I need. Anyone else think it will work:

Hey guys
I've had an interesting situation develop in the last few weeks where my zoas have started to shrink and fade away. Nothing else in my tank seems to be affected, my torch opens up nicely and is looking healthy, my few other coral frags seem to be doing well. All my paramaters are in check (i did have a bit of a salinity issue a while back when my one baffle cracked in my sump, the water level changed a bit and i was a bit silly in that I didn't top up as much I should have - SG rose to around 1.029/1.030 but with my new sump that is all sorted).
my immediate thought is that maybe my lights are due for replacement - they are around 8 months old now (4 T5s). however browsing through google this morning i found these two threads and i was wondering if anyone has ever tried this?

Thank you

Its been a while since iv been on masa. its good to be back!
just taking a quick squiz through the forums, its awsome to see how many tanks have flourished since iv last seen them.
Now.. the reason iv been away is because I took part in an industrial automation competition. took about 6 months to build and we presented recently and were awarded first prize. From this I have industrial automation equipment coming out of my ears. PLC's, HMI's, sensors.. you name it.
with that said, Im upgrading my tank and I am going to be automating it.
my new tank size will be roughly 1200x700x700 10mm thick, centre overflow, with euro bracing. euro bracing necessary for these dims?
been getting some quotes on the glass and still deciding whether to use starfire. its just less that triple the price of standard. think its worth it?
lighting im still deciding. but it will be dimmable to simulate sunrise/sunset. either LEDs or T5 with MH running on dimmable ballasts.
filtration: probably a DIY skimmer, you know me... live rock, DSB, chaeto, carbon reactor, rowa-phos reactor, calcium reactor.
flow: any 24v flow pumps so i can control them nicely with the plc. going to also attempt a DIY wave box.
and now for a brief discription on the automation.
il be using a siemens s7-200 plc. alone it has 14 digital inputs, 10 digital outputs and 2 analog inputs and output. expandable up 100 inputs and outputs. has up to 256 timers and a real time clock. i also have an internet module so i can control and monitor my tank over the web.
i have a 6" touch screen HMI to communicate with with the system.
i want this tank fool proof so if i go away nothing can go wrong. il have pressure and flow switches in various parts of the tank just to monitor for and blockages or bursts etc.
thats it for now =)
the HMI
the PLC

Just wonderng if anyone out there uses organic aqua and if so why? and why not?
I started off on it and cycled my tank in 20 mins!! no cyano or brown algae or anything, but stopped using it and some crap happened :(, i was also using tap water though(which i dnt do now!) so was wondering if stopped the organic aqua destroyed the bio filter?:P i only use the fish health treatment now which seems to make the fish 'happier' jus asking for some opinions and experiences....

I was staring at my rocks after dark with a red light and saw this earthworm looking thing, it is abot 1/2mm diameter and extends and retracts constantly to a max of about 5mm. The end of it appears as a feather worm as it is retracting and it's main body remains inside a small hole in the rock. It appears to be a beige color thing. There is another about 1/2 that size with a zebra striping (black and white) which seems a similar thing but moves slower.
I don't have a good enough camera to get the required macro photo because of it's size. Does anyone know what this thing is?

hi guys,
just advising everyone that there is a guy out and about looking to buy a second hand marine tank, BE AWARE AND PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING!
his name is Tiaan Steyn. (he is not a member on this forum)
however i did point to this direction for him to get good information from)
he poses as a doctor at the wilgeheuwel hospital.
i was contacted in response to an add i placed i placed on junkmail.
i was meant to drop the tank off at his premises for him to help out in the delivering process, paying cash on delivery. over the phone he sounds nice enough so i didnt see any issue.
the address he gave me i found when i got to the area didnt exist, not even garmin could pick it up.
i stopped outside a complex and phoned him to tell him i was lost and looking for his address.
upon which i got told he was to busy and about to go into surgery.
now due to dumb luck, i ran into his neighbor when i stopped to ask for directions. he was sending me to a different address around a block away.
now i am at his address(not the one he told me) and i started asking questions cos i was hearing from his neighbor weren't adding up to what he had been telling me.
upon chatting to the neighbor i found out he was in fact a lawyer not a doctor, living at a different address, and an avid coin collector. also keeps loads of birds in his garage.
(these details are provided so that people can know warning signs)
his number i wont list, but it contains 66666 as the last few numbers. <-- if that wasn't hint enough!
also stays in the welteverden park area
at this point i now i got the neighbor to give him a call.
after which i received a nasty phone call from tiaan. the call i received afterwards from him showed his frustration and he immediately wanted nothing to do with the tank i was delivering to him.
time to turn tale and run!
guys please be careful! this okes house was pretty shabby with cameras and security to the 9's
way dodge!
be careful guys, i recon new rule is dont do anything til you see the money in your bank account or cash in hand has been delivered.
and never deliver on behalf of a stranger!!

HI ROB:)
I hope this is the right place to post this:whistling:
I was just popping in here to ask a few questions for the future:thumbup:
DO u guys make custom build tanks? DO u guys include stand, equipment ect?, You see i currently have a 12 gallon nono reef and it is going ok:) But if things go good me and my dad are planning on upgrading to a 100-120 gallon tank under our steers. Is it possible to customly build a tank to go with the slope of the stairs? Oh we live in Centurion-Irene
Is it possible to give a very rough example of the total cost of a 120 gallon reef tank- corals ect
Ill provide dimensions if this project is feasible
Kind regards Robert

Hi Hennie,
My toestand van my H2o is goed, geen,Nitrite,Aminiac of nitrate nie, ek gebruik reen water as aanvulling en see water as Water changes.
Wat stel jy voor.
Dankie maat. Se my waar bly jy nou.

So I did just start running a Jebo 338 - but then changed my mind and bought a secondhand JBJ Delux 24 with skimmer, seio530 prop, LR etc.
Tank has been running for 7 months. So I get to skip the tank maturing process :whistling:. I have however inherted something else with the tank (don't be moaning at me now), it came with a nennie.
I have a healthy respect for the advice given by all you reefers - frankly I am terrified of the emoticons you will send my way if I do her any harm. I will say this, she looks healthy (compared to numerous googled photoies) and is happy enough to eat. I will post some pic's of her on the weekend.
Now I have some questions: Is the tank big enough for her? Currently she is about 8cm across - but how big will she get? Which of course you are going to ask "what is she?" I dunno, she is a rose colour, no visible "bubble tips". Condy maybe?
Obviously I want to try and let her settle down after the move and keep the tank as stable as possible, but the aquascaping is diabolical. I thought if I gave her 4 weeks to settle down and tried not to fiddle - would I then be able to get in there are scoot stuff around? What about adding more LR? Can I, will that still create mini-cycles in a mature tank? Should I be considering adding cured rock instead?
Some people believe that nennies are better off if they have clowns to care for them, should I be looking for a pair for her? At present there are no fish in the tank - only 2 hermies. I asked the former owners why they weren't putting her into their upgrade tank, they said that the clowns were stealing the food out her mouth.
Rest assured I am a lover of all things living - if I think that she is even remotely unhappy I will ensure she goes to a "happier" home, but if she is happy I would like to try and keep her - with a little help from all of you.

HI @LL
Last year i bought some LR, quiet a bit of it... i took out all the nice pieces for display but now im stuck with 1.2 pounds of LR on my pavement... IT is not like ur normal LR it looks like it is made out of hundreds of little "TUBES"
What i plan to do with it is to break it up into little bits and replace my Bio balls with this...
My Tank is a 12 Gallon reef tank, so i plan on putting a Oceanic Biocube skimmer in the first chamber. Then in the second chamber it flows through the (LR) then it goes through 2 carbon bags then lastly a bag of good old purigen. MUst i keep the bioballs?
I can put them in the 3rd chamber, but then all the bacteria will get starved of nitrate as the water passes through a skimmer then LR then purigen. Do u think its nessesary to have them? if not what can i put in the 3ed chamber where the pump is?
I do have about 15 pounds of LR + 4 inches of live sand in the display
Thank u

Transportation of livestock
Hi guys,
I'm on my way to Durbs and planning to bring some fish and corals. Problem is I have to make a couple of stops on the way back and will need to keep livestock alive for as long as possible.
-Any threads on this around?
-Know where I can find a battery opperated airpump?
-Know where I can find "heatpacks"
-Know if there is a way to buy a small container of oxygen to fill bags?
-Suggestions please.
-What would be the longest time I can keep corals and fish alive?
-Any chemicals I should add to water?
-My car will be packed but I will be able to bring some salt water with for a "waterchange" halfway.
-The time it takes me to get back will be determined by the time I can keep livestock alive but I NEED to stop a few times(the more the better), for business.
Thanks all!

Who uses purigen
would like to hear some feedback
It did assist in dropping my nitrates a little, never picked up any ammonia and nitrite in my tank.
Thing is i need to recharge it now, seemd to have darken abit.
Do i just soak it in normal household bleach for 24 hours, then can I use any dechlorinator or must it be the dechchlorinator from seachem?
Im sure this product cant last forever, how many times can it be rejuvenated?

I have a pump which I would like to use for a pond set-up which I would like to build soon. Been putting it off for 2 years, I have this pump but have no details on it's flow rates, can you please help.
The fan cover is easily replaced from almost any pool shop with old broken pump setups coming through. This pump was run on a pond for about a year so I know it is still good.
I just don't want to build too large to find the pump is too small, the pond size will be governed by the pump size - flow rates.

I got this stunning Tamato Clown the week-end.
I never saw it's colour as good and nice like this one.
Even the wite stripe under normal light has a nice blue tint colour in it.
Photos is not the best due to the fish still hiding and staying in the back of his new tank.
I see he took a fancy to the hair algae and he pushes his body as deep into the hair algae as possible and when Im close he only stay agains the algae.
Will a clown host n hair algae? This one does. Dont move to far from it.

WELL as the new :biggrin:green :slayer:banana in reeftown i am glad to say Hi:yeahdude:.
I am a new marine hobbist. We started setting up a 75gal reef aquarium in April. My roomate and myself put tons of labor in building our own canopy and stand. We have become very wellknown at our local home depot store rain or shine nothing keep us from getting our stuff from there.
Well as DIY apprentice carpenters/ plumbers & newbie aquarist. The hobby is taking its toll in our finance and time. As everyone here knows that nothing compares to the satisfaction of having built your stuff. But so far since consulting this site with many questions I am very confused with everything. Some people say and agree on things and at the same time others disagree but many advise have helped me along the way to get me where I am now. My 75gal is in it's 1st wk of cycling.
I've made friends with several local aqarium store owners and again they all have their own opinions which makes decision taking very difficult. But anyways let me take care of my problems on my own and as always I hope to count on YOU GUYS FOR SOME ADVISE EVEN IF CONTRAVERSAL. Thanks for listening and welcoming into your house.

I was just wondering if there is anyone out there with a huge anemone? mine is big and getting bigger, was wondering if theres anyone with a monster nennie? i hear in the red sea they reach a diameter of 1m!!

I'm looking for some advice from the "sparky's" among us;).
I have this filthy habit of forgetting my main return pumps off after I have fed my fish:nono:, so i'm attempting to modify my DB board so that it will power up my return pump after a defined time interval has passed.
I found this product on e-bay and was wondering if it would work if I wired it in inline of my main return pump.

Then there is this product, but the wiring diagram in the picture is just way to complex for my simple "non-sparky" brain. If one of you out there could guide me through it then I would prefer it since it can handle up to 8amps load.

Last but not least if any of you know of a local SA equivalent in Cape Town with a similar product that would be great

2 Years ago I would of bagged myself a deltec skimmer without even looking further.
Unfortunately I am little behind with Deltec's new technology and to be honest I fancy the new cone skimmers a lot more.
Don't get me wrong, Deltec is still number 1 in my books, but I feel I can get the same performance for a lot less moola these days.I hope I am not upsetting anyone here :).
Can u guys please tell me what our local markets (skimmer wise) looks like and what brands are out there.International is ok as well ,but local would be better.
So far the KZ revolution skimmer is on my radar, but the model I would like is internal only.I prefer an external skimmer for quite a few reasons.

The local LFS wanted to trade to trade me some potassium iodide concentrate by 'aquarium systems' for 2 frags, but it looks a bit old, can it expire? if so what will happen if i use it?

Need some advice,im in the fish market for a nice sand sifter goby.
question is,iv been told that the bluecheek goby picks up sand and drops it all over the place, but the diamond back goby just sifts thru it and moves on without sprayin the sand over any corals.
my question is,does the six spot(valenciennae sexgutatta) sift sand nicely or spray it around like the bluecheek goby?
Or which is the ideal goby that will not make a huge mess?

I use a King 5 and King 6 as recirculate pumps. I have a reoccurring problem and would like to know if others have experienced the same?
The metal film surrounding the rotor starts to rust and lift off the rotor.
I bought the pumps from Northlands in Durban and they have replaced the rotors free of charge in both instances. My concern is that it will happen again. I'm also concerned what effect it has on the tank. Does this encourage green hair algae?

Hi All,
Took all the advise you all gave me and put a 150W halide in the tank along with the t5s and t8s.
In the 2 weeks since I put this in I have noticed that my live rock is getting some pure white patches.
Is this some sort of calcium buildup or do you get white coraline algae?

This will be my second tank, first one is a fish only tank. This tank I wanna do fish and some entry level coral. Can please advise me on wich are the easiest te keep?
Thank is about 200lt 1m x 0.5m x 0.5m. Lighting is 4 tubes t5 (2 blue and 2 white), I have a Tetratec cannister filter and a Red Sea Air skimmer rated for a 250lt tank.
I've read somewhere on this site that you need to change the bioballs, white ceramic stuff and black charcol stuff something else?
The rock in the tank i picked up from the beach , getting 7kg live rock from the lfs.
Please if you have any suggestions or info that I should know

Hi all,
After the last 2 fantastically well supported Gauteng Reef meetings, we want to keep the momentum up. Unfortunately the folks that we have asked (Adee and Milflo) cannot host us this month, so I am asking YOU to stand up and help us find a suitable spot for this.
We love looking at other Awesome reefs, so please can we try and get an uber cool reef this month.
Please post in this thread if you think there is a tank that we can bribe the owner of to let us descend on him/her, or even better if you would like to host a meeting.
Cheers
Marc

Ola, how you all?
I am setting up my second tank:) and need some help here...The sump is 1.22m long with 4 chambers, one for skimmer, one for LR, one for DSB and one for return...
1. How deep does the DSB sand need to be cause i read a hundred different stuff on it...?
2. Does the amount of LR in the sump matter? I can get bout 15kg in there...
3. Light on the DSB? What to use? Also heard various stuff bout it...
More questions will follow later...
Thanks all

Hey all... A few mates and I are planning a trip to Mdumbi in Transkei from the 19th to the 29th... Ten days of fun... As im from cape town and we dont have anything we can collect for our tanks here i thought i could catch something while im there. Ive never done it before and i dont know what i need.. Got the flippers and the snorkel i use for catching crayfish.. know i need a net but what type and what else will help me??? Going to use a cooler box to transport them back and as my car has climate control im going to keep the car temp at 25 on my way back. That should keep them alive i hope. Whats your opinion and has anyone transported fish so far?? Any help and insight will be appreciated..
Something else... what should i look for while im there like where do the fish normally hide and how should i go about catching them...
-
Clinton , Mark and I went for dive today to celebrate the awsome clean/ warn blue water we experienced this weekend..
we encountered some duckbill rays laying on the sandbed as well as some large leary.. it was an awsome dive and although you can see the season is drawing to a close there were a few fish still around..
Tropicals we saw were:
cleaner wrasse
pommie (rhombus/striatus)
and a few devils
i was about to call it a day when i saw one cave just begging me to take a deeper look into it.
luckily i did because i caught a pineapple fish..
i have added it to my system but im trying to find out as much as i can about them..
i know they eat small micro organisims when young and are predatory when older.. they attract the prey by using illuminated spots (glow in the dark) below their eyes to attract prey through curiosity..
i am batteling to post pics but will do so in the morning..
im pretty chuffed at the catch as i have heard theyb are fairly rare down here and i have always wanted to tick this one off my caught list..
can anyone offer more info on them for me?

Hey everyone
You guys are propably getting really pissed whith these kind of questions but why not push it a little:whistling:. Haha ok here I go, I don't know a thing about KZN and we are going to Sodwana next weekend. I know that Sodwana is a "no catching beach" but I wan't to know where is some great rockpools close nearby? I also want to get a permit there so can I just tak one out at the local post office there? Also what would be the best way of transport back to Limpopo? I was thinking of using 2x 20L drums to keep all the catchings and a battery powered air pump to keep in the oxygen. I will also have a few drums with saltwater I can replace on the road. OK another question, how do you guys catch the fish? They are so fast, do you guys have a secret, please PM me if you have a secret you don't want everyone to know:P. Please please give me any sugestions as I'm clueless.
Thanks

Hi Guys. I've been a "member" of MASA for a little over 2 years now......but not very active. Did my welcome post and then dissapeared off the radar (as I'm sure a lot of new members do).
Not to bore you with details, let's just say after a HECTIC divorce, re-marrying, again, buying a new house and a new job I'm now finally ready to start this adventure.
As I said in my initial posts 2 years ago, been keeping marines for as long as I can remember - with old technology (UG filters!!!), and was sucsessfull - to a certain degree. Unfortunatly the pics on the old PC and camera etc. got "lost" in the divorce, so sorry 'bout that. To recap, only a few hardy fish, fanworms etc. with some dead coral skeletons, nothing spectacular. I did at least learn the basics about water parameters and most of all - PATIENCE.
So that's it, just thought i'd pop in and say hi again. Been reading up a lot over the past month or so, so I've got an fair idea of what I'll be doing (don't worry, nothing to do with UG:nono:). Will post these ideas for you guys to help me out, with a lot of questions, so be warned!

Hey guys, needing advice.
woke up this morning to see my regal tang has a clouded eye!! Flipitall!!
Had her for about 2.5 weeks. She has had quite a bit a ich the last few days(more so in the evenings, dont no why?) but still feeding very well so ive just kept up the extra feeding, soaking the chow in garlic-the usual white spot remedies.
But cloudy eyes is something new to me. from what I read up its quite a serious thing???
Only thing that could be causing extra stress is my sailfin tang giving her a bit of a hassle every now n then.
So my poa is to quarantine her, but do I treat her with the normal copper treatment or antibiotics or what?
If antibiotics, what and where do I find them??
Another thing, the last time i quarantined a fish, the nitrites in the q. tank went sky high(due to it not having a proper filtration system and being very small)- how do i avoid this, by feeding the fish less??
thanks!!!!

Hardware for saleThread title: Fibreglass carbon filter
Location: Richardsbay KZN
Shipping or Collection only: Lets discuss the logistics
Photo's and description/list of items for sale: I have a fibreglass bodied filter with a timer and solenoid at the top, it also has a plug that used to be connected to a computer that controlled a hospital's water filtration system. The timer and visible working parts including the tube that goes down into the cylinder is plastic or rubber. The cylinder measures 900x180 and it has a sticker on it that says cylinder size 9x35. This filter was used as a carbon filter and I had a plan to put phosphate remover in it. Well my whole system is about 90 litres and this filter is way too big. I would like to swop it for something more suitably sized that can hold phosphate remover and possibly carbon. Some advice will also be very welcome.

Hi Guys,
I recently bought more rock from a guy that was looking to shut down his system and ended up rescuing his fish as well... his system was poorly maintained and in a bit of a state.
All the fish are a lot happier now and I have removed two bullies out of the equation... basically he had the following:
- Scopus Tang
- 3 Yellow Tail Damsel's
- 1 African Damsel (Bully No 1)
- 1 VERY LARGE Maroon Clown (Bully No 2)
- 1 Bi-Color Angel
- 1 Fisheri Angel
- 1 Scooter Blennie (Gave him to a mate of mine)
Anyways, the Bullies who have been exiled to the pet shop for resale were terrorizing this poor Scopus Tang and have completely demolished some of his fins... (As seen in the pics below) and his scales on either side are damaged as well...

Apologies for the poor quality photo's I had to freeze frame some video as he is rather camera shy ;)
After adding him to my 4ft 400l tank he is MUCH happier to say the least.
My questions are:
Can I get his fins to grow back and scales to regenerate?
And, If so, how can I do this?
Many Thanks for any advice! :)

this is my hobbyhorse! i hear of successful breeders of various fish and it is quoted as fact! when in fact fish have accidentally spawned in a tank. fish breeding in my opinion is when a person can recreate or place fish in a specific enviroment for purposes of breeding. having done this, encourage fishes to pair , spawn and for the breeder to successfully raise the young to adulthood or thereabouts. i heard of a guy in the states who is spoken of in breeding circles as a person who has bred mandarins. i contacted him and he told me he hasnt kept any larvae past ten days. yet the urban legends live on. if you have successfully bred any specific species based on intention to do so please put your name down with the specific species that you have bred and the amount of young adult fish you have produced. ( i can if i want to , does not count. and neither does watching fish spawn in your tank. (yes i am grumpy)

I just stumbled on this site, I have been looking through the sumps and if there isn't a sump arrangement in here to suit your style, you are just being too fussy...
A DIY reefers dream :slayer: type of site - I have been looking at this stuff for about an hour already and not getting bored - I just had to share it. My personal favorite is the Top Down Box...
Top down boxes (for photography)
Fan Trays
Fan Brackets
Calcium Reactors
Nano Tanks
Propagation Tanks
Sumps of all shapes to include fuges, reactors and all the "lekker toys"
It is all in ft and inches and gallons but a simple converter and you know exactly what they re talking about if you can't easily calc in your head.

I need to get something to clean my sand (well, actually everywhere in my tank for that matter), I am very undecided and need some tips from you guys. Basically I get recurring brown algae which for 2/3 of my tank is sorted by my sand dollar, he cleans up well. However there is a few areas where it just refuses to go to so I need to get a cleaner or few to sort that out.
What cleaner/s would be more advised? Keep in mind that I only have a 250L system so a great big 25cm star isn't going to work out so well:nono:.
I have 1 Red Sea Star, 1 Cleaner Shrimp and 1 Sand Dollar - clearly no where near enough cleaners to sort things out in my system:whistling:.
I have seen my LFS with loads of sand shifting Gobies but have also heard that they can cause problems by digging - that could be a problem and cause a rockfall which will be a major problem should that happen. The other concern is hearing about them throwing substrate onto corals so there is a fair reluctance with that fish specifically...BUT...I could be mistaken - what is your take/advice/recommendation??

Hi guys
Just a question. To hatch live brine is a walk in the park, but how does one get them to the next levels, and grow into larger specimens? Do they now require a food source like Rotifier or planktonic foods etc?
Is it maybe just easier to feed the nuapli, and buy the larger live brine from the LFS?
Thanks;)

hi guys i have bought 4 of these sieo prop pumps during my reefkeeping.
they are expensive and neat with the magnet mount system.
however, 3 of which are do not like starting.
all of them i maintain and clean every month.
now the issue is when i plug them in they clatter around and never start. this is very irritating for a powerhead that costs so much!
anyone have the same issues??
and how did you solve the problem?

Hi all,
Look what I found looking at my tank - my Pajama Cardinal had a bit of a "dikbek", so I inpected ... There are 3 in the tank. 2 are smaller than the third. Here's a pic of one of the smaller ones. Notice the underside of the mouth.
Now, compare that to the mouth of the larger one - a definite bulge here:
And finally, after some effort I could snap this one:
Wouldn't you know - They're breeding! Don't know which one of the smaller ones are the female, but now I know the larger one carrying the eggs is the male.

Will using a normal single ended 250W Phillips Metal halide, That costs R220, cause any problems in a marine aquarium, like algae problems. These lights are not made for aquaria, thus not the correct spectrum.

I have a Jebo 338 (secondhand) - which I am now trying to sculpt into the world's most beautiful nano . And so need to relentlessly bug you with questions that will no doubt make you roll your eyes - you'll love me in the end, I know you will :1:.
Things I know:- I need to change the current light bulbs for marine (I just can't find any in the LFS that fit)
Things I don't know: - I need to take out the sponge and the bio balls- correct? What am I putting instead? LR rubble - where do I get it and is it going to cost me lots? Is there a cheap alternative to LR rubble? Can you guess that cheaper is going to be a theme?
- LFS suggested I get an external tetra canister filter, do I really need one? Will the extra volume of water help? Can't have an open sump due to feline interests.
- Tank has been running for about 2 weeks - with live sand and 1 Kg LR. No algea bloom (cross fingers).
- So sand bed at the moment is about 4cm thick, should I make it deeper/thinner? Does it make a difference at all?
- Is there such a thing as too much LR? I gather I am meant to aim at around 4 kgs (36L tank)?
- When do I get to add clean up crew? Will Hermit crabs eat interesting things off of my LR, that I would rather they didn't?
- I have the standard powerhead that came with the jebo, I figure I need another one for a bit more flow and directionality. Should I add just the powerhead? What about a tiny rena filter unit instead?
Thanks - for all the help you are going to give me, cause I know you will, your nice people after all...

Hi :wave2:
Just popped a thread to say "hi". I am a noob with a nano.
I have kept freshwater tanks (many of all sizes), then hubby got a marine tank and I was too interested in taking over his tank , so he bought me a nano to play with.
I will now be moving off to start a thread in the "I don't know what the hell I am doing"/ Beginners section...

My mate called me sunday morning and told me he thinks he has just seen a Gem Tang. i was suprised, to say the least, but believed him. he told me he couldnt see the dots but was black and had a yellow tail. the 45min drive out to him took around 30min.. in a Fiat Uno!
Once i got there he showed me the hole the fish was in.. it was in a 50cm deep and in a bucket type of whole. it took me less than 5 sec to catch. he is now in my mates tank and is looking good.
He is around 5-6cm in diameter. and a bit tattered. we are now in winter so it is kinda rare to even see it. we thought this fish was a myth! we now the myth is happily swimming in our glass box!
He is now eating flake and his colours are so dark! beautiful.
The hole he was hiding it
the tidal pool he was cruising in
no looking strong once caught
shortly after being dripped and put into my mates tank
more pics will come in the near future and an update

Hi all
I have a Reeftek TS3 and was wondering if anyone has ever drilled the cup to fit a drain hole? I'm tempted to just use a normal drill in the base of the cup (the black plastic) but something tells me I should ask first. :p
Thanks.

Does anyone have any Strap caulerpa (Caulerpa filiformis) that they would be willing to part with? I know it grows like weeds along parts of out coast. Had some in my sump a while back, but soon vanished after my needle urchin was banished to that part of my sump.

R120 000 fines over mussels
Durban - Three men were fined R120 000 each after they were found guilty of stripping over 5 000 mussels from rocks in coastal areas, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife said on Tuesday.
Ezemvelo KZN-Natal Wildlife spokesperson Jeff Gaisford in a statement: "The men were each sentenced to a fine of R120 000 or two years imprisonment, half of which is suspended for two years on condition they do not commit a similar offence.
Jiankang Wang, 53, Yingpingdi Gao, 44, and Enguang Weng, 33, pleaded guilty to two counts under the Marine Living Resources Act in the Port Shepstone Magistrate's Court.
They were found guilty of being in possession of mussels without a permit and using illegal implements to remove them from the rocks.
Police arrested the three men in April when they caught them with 5 678 mussels. The men also had a spade, a hoe and an axe with them, Gaisford said.
He said members of the public need a recreational permit to pick mussels.
The bag limit is 30 mussels per day. These permits are available from most post offices, or offices of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, said Gaisford.
Mussels can be legally picked by hand or with an implement with a blade or flat edge no bigger than 12mm in width.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has welcomed the sentence
it underlined the organisations determination to prosecute anyone who saw fit to plunder the natural wildlife resources of the province, said Gaisford.

Hi Guys
I'm very upset - the first coral I put in my tank - a beautiful rose open brain - died over the weekend.
I've checked all my levels and everything seems fine. The only thing I've done is I added sand pollyps last week, put them where the brain was, and moved it to the other side of the tank.
It was doing great for a couple of days, and then just died over night.
For the last three months it was inflating every morning when the lights came on and seemed very healthy
what could have happened?

Hi reefers,
I read constantly that you cannot keep cauliflower corals & Sun corals to live in captivity. These corals need special setups and Even then they do not always survive. Reefers should not keep them at all!
IN THAT CASE We must be doing something wrong!!!! They multiply in our retail coral systems!
Our sun corals regularly spawn in our shop aquariums!

This is one of the baby's
Look at the growth of this cauliflower on the grit!

And look at the tube worm growth!

My point with all this jerking your chain is - In a hobbyists aquarium these corals can also survive and grow as long as they know the needs of the corals and give it to them, so please bear with them in the future.
Our experience with them are:
· Give them good water quality, all our coral aquariums are monitored weekly to keep the Calcium, Hardness, Iodine, strontium, magnesium, Nitrates, Phosphates and pH levels are correct. (salinity is daily)
· Give them water flow, they do not want slow or stagnant water.
· Regular water changes with a good quality salt.
· Give them good quality foods, we feed the following in our coral aquariums:
o Coral Frenzy very regularly
o ALL the different frozen foods available at least twice a day this include : Bloodworm (sun) brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, pacific krill, fine mussels, lobster eggs, smelt, rotifers & frozen fish, with nori for the tangs. All this is mashed into a paste.
o Healthy fed fish lead to lots of fish waste that are used by them. So we stock fish in these systems for the corals.
With all these food being introduced into our systems, we are forced to dose regularly with Prodibio , but that is not bad as the water quality is excellent and our corals are in good nick.

The week-end when I clued some coral on to the fake rock I saw this slug and I saw another one like this before in my tank and took it out. This one I left as it is doing no harm as yet. You dont see this slug offen in my tank. Now and then you see him.
What is this realy - see pic. :(
If you touch it ,it pulls up in to a ball. It got a hard peace of shell on it's head. any Idea?
