  skimmer rating for tank, can you overkill?

  I want to upgrade my skimmer, but can you have a skimmer that is "too big" for the tank?
  Remember nearly 99% of reefers ovestock their tanks, and I know rule of thumb is a skimmer rated at twice your water volume, but can you go overboard?

  Feeding Angels

  I have bought an angel called a "Cream Angel"Does anyone have any info on these.I can't get it to eat.It won't even get excited about mussels.I don't know if it is a difficult fish.I lost a Trimaculatus recently.This is now the second angel I got for free.Surely they can't all be difficult.Are there any angels that could be termed easy.I have a semi that eats well and a flame angel I have had for 4 years.I even collected some zoos to try and entice it to eat.HELP!!

  Getting Started - Durban

  Howzit guys,
  
  Like I said in my intro thread, I will be moving to Durban at the end of September, and I would like to get a marine tank going when I get there.
  
  I just have a couple of questions for the local guys, and hopefully they'll be able to point me in the right direction. Also, some general questions for anyone keen on helping point me in the right direction.
  
  I want to set up a tank of about 4 or 5 ft, I'd like a 6ft tank, but they're a bit expensive, but hey if I can get one at a good bargain, I'll take it.
  
  My questions are:
  
  1) Regarding live rock, do you have to buy the expensive rock in the pet shops, or can you collect live rock from our rock pools etc. Is this allowed, or are our live rocks no good?
  
  2) Here in East London we collect a lot of fish from the rock pools, even right in front of my house, sadly, I didn't research enough and killed all the ones I tried to keep, but I do have a very nice Lionfish that has been going for about 6 months now! How are Durban's rock pools for fish collection. I'm not all that into diving etc, so I would mostly want to collect from the pools. I don't really want to buy fish, because it's a lot of fun to collect your own. It's just that some people say Durban's rocks are dead...
  
  That's basically it for now, most of my other questions have been answered by looking around the site!
  
  Hope to meet some of you local guys when I get down there.

  Just Saying Hi

  Howzit Guys,
  
  I joined the forum quite a long time ago, and I've been reading and lurking, lol, so I decided to just introduce myself once and for all.
  
  I recognized a few guys here from Sealine, one being Mek's, I go by the same name there too, but my name is actually Jared. I currently stay in East London, but I will be moving to Durban at the end of September.
  
  Basically, I have a few things I want to ask the guys that stay there, so I'll be posting a few threads today.
  
  Anyway, thanks to all the guys that have posted their tanks and advice on the site, I look forward to putting a tank together when I get there, and hopefully I can meet up with some of the locals for help and advice?

  Dane's Mantis Tank! Stomatopod madness!

  Hey All,
  
  Though I'd make a thread for the new tank that is going to become home for my awesome little mantis shrimp!
  
  First off - a huge thanks to Johan V.A for donating this to me! You rock buddy! Seriously! Your generosity knows no bounds!
  Secondly - another huge thanks to David (459b) for giving me the mantis shrimp! :-) This little critter literally ate a fortune worth of livestock in Daves tank, so very chuffed he spared its life for so long until I came along to "rescue" it! What a character!
  
  So, my mantis shrimp has been living in a tiny little 25L pico of very minimal setup for far too long. Its basically just a garden of pulsing xenia and caulerpa. It has a tiny little atman internal filter (which is bulletproof!!) and I do a waterchange about once every month... if I remember... :P But this tank hardly ever gets cyano, nor hair algae. I spose its cause he only needs to eat once or twice a week...
  
  But! Mantis is moving up in the world! :-)

  Okay, so it's only half full... And I havent scaped or put sand in! I know :-(
  My MSc in conservation bio hardly gives me a second of time to work on these sorts of things.... But a start is the hardest part right? :p
  
  And heres the overflow I cut with an angle grinder. Decided to go with a smooth lip rather than teeth. But I have the cutouts if I want to add them afterwards...

  Frustrating things people say

  Im sure everyone has had non-aquarium people make stupid/ridiculous/annoying/i-want-to-punch-you-in-the-face comments regarding their prized tanks.
  Ive had the usual "Wheres Nemo", "It it saltwater", "I like your shrimp" comments but over the weekend i heard one that left me speechless.
  My uncle came to visit and was rather impressed by my collection of corals. My uncle is a well educated man and grew up along the coast so i assumed he would appresciate what i have acheived. He stood in silence staring at all the vibrant colours, watching everything sway in the flow. After a while he uttered the following....
  "I really like those ones".....and pointed to a rock covered in Aptaisia.

  Hi All
  
  Thanks for all the welcomes. I purchased my tank last week (Boyu 550) and maybe regretting not going custom built. However I think it may be great to learn on and then when I am ready go for a bigger custom made.
  
  I added fine crushed coral approximatley (3 cm deep) and half filled my tank and added more bone coral so the total depth of the floor (including the fines are 6.5 - 8 cm). Thereafter I added some live rock and topped up the remainding water. Tested the water and adjusted the SG for 48 hours after which I have added some mature rock and intend leaving cycling for the next 2 months. My questions are;
  

  1. Have I gone about the intial setup correctly ?
  2. Should I test everyday, and if yes, what parameters,
  3. What do I use for top up water. Is RO water the only accepptable water or can I add still water which I have adjusted pH, alkalinity and SG.
  4. Please could anyone email me a list for daily, weekly and monthly maintenance.
  5. Where when I need to purchase Livestock and mature rock should I go to. Live in JHB south.
  6. Where can I get test kits, affordable ?

  Any additional advise would be great.

  I was just thinking of the very first Marine Tank I ever kept which was in 2002
  
  it was a 4 foot tank with an "internal sump" with a air driven skimmer.
  
  there was no such site as MASA & the info we were given was shocking to say the least.
  
  So what has changed in the last 10 years of reef keeping?
  
  when did the following become part of the hobby
  
  1.) Sump
  2.) MH Lighting / T5's
  3.) Dosing - CA / MG / KH
  4.) CA reactors
  5.) Carbon Reactors
  6.) Skimmers & then proper Skimmers
  7.) DSB
  8.) ATS

  Downgrading to a Boyu TL550

  Hi Guys,
  
  I have a 1mX0,5mX0.5m tank with sump etc etc.
  This is my livestock
  1 x pyjama cardinal
  2 x clowns
  2 x chromis
  1 x midas blenny
  1 x 4 stripe damsel
  1 x choc dip chromis
  
  My tank has been running for 22 months. I have been slowly neglecting the tank due to work and other commitments.
  
  So i want to downgrade my tank.
  
  What are the common issues with a Boyu TL550? Before I downgrade, i want to know what i am in for.

  Substrate causing problem?

  Hi all
  
  Okay so i thought about this long and hard.
  
  I have been struggling with a GHA problem for far too long now.
  
  I have done everything. From cooking rocks to changing lights to almost everything.
  
  My last resort is to remove the substrate.
  
  I have sugar fine crushed coral. Which i feel is fueling my GHA.
  
  The reason i say this is because when i agitate the substrate there is HUGE dust storms that occur.
  
  I started yesterday by removing some of the substrate and i'm going to continue to remove it until its all gone. I have also added a huge skimmer rated for double my systems volume.
  
  I will run bare bottom until i can see a change in the rocks and the GHA. Hopefully this will start going away and i can continue with a better reefing journey. I can then also start updating my thread.
  
  I am also moving rocks to the sump and "cooking" them there with no light etc and that should help alot. I will rotate the rocks slowly and see if this solves my problem also.
  
  Will keep you updated.
