Coral Bleaching Likely in Caribbean This Year
ScienceDaily (Sep. 29, 2010) According to the NOAA Coral Reef Watch monitoring system, coral bleaching is likely in the Caribbean in 2010. With temperatures above-average all year, NOAA's models show a strong potential for bleaching in the southern and southeastern Caribbean through October that could be as severe as in 2005 when over 80 percent of corals bleached and over 40 percent died at many sites across the Caribbean. Scientists are already reporting coral bleaching at several Caribbean sites and severe bleaching has been reported from other parts of the world.

went home yesterday and found my clown fish dead, Im new to the hobby, loving it, but seems my clownfish dont like to live... I bought three in the begining, dont kill me now, one died cause he didnt want to eat, so the other 2 got cosy and was always together, swimming together, etc, and then my water got high nitrite, like 5mg/L, and my small clownfish died, so I assume that was Nitrite, so I was away the weekend, my mom looked after my fish, got home, and my clown didnt want to eat, already suspected something wrong, monday came, still nothing, went to buy tropic marine test kit, tesed No2 and it was 0,1mg/L (been treating my water), saw the clownsfish eyes were not normal, it was mostly white with small black pupil, yesterday got home, and dead, so wondering why he died, my other fish(still not sure what it is) is 100% and eating and swimming everywhere... My two molly's (who is helping to cycle the last 2-3 weeks since my No2 spiked) is also sharp, my turbo snails doing what they do best, havent tested all parameters yet, but water seems to be perfect, so why oh why did the clownfish died? Im very very new to the hobby, so please dont bite my head off... Tomorrow Im doing a 30% waterchange again... Oh and my zoa(finally got the name of my coral) was not feeling well when the No2 was high, but she is coming along nicelly again so proud of her... Thanx guys...

Hi folks
I have been fighting a battle against White Spot for some time now :banghead:. Here are the tank specifics:
Age: 8 months
Volume: 300L including sump (250L DT)
SG: 1.022
Temp: Ranging 28 - 31 Deg C (I think this is the stress that caused the initial outbreak)
pH: 8.4
Alk: LOW 1 - 1.4 mE/lt (milli equivalents per litre) I think this is about 3dKH
Ammonia: 0
Nitirite: 0.1 ppm
Nitrate: 20 - 25 ppm
Fish:
Powder Blue Tang: Heavy infection
Fox Face: very light infection (3 spots)
Coral Beauty Angel: very light infection
Yellow Tailed blue Damsel: no infection
Mandarin: Unfortunately the mandarin succumbed to the infection and died last night. Heavy white spot infection:dft004: He was one of my favourite fish and was doing so well.
Inverts:
4 x local hermits
5 x local snails
1 x blood shrimp
1 x cleaner shrimp (the cleaner shrimp shed 2 days ago as per normal but died last night as well. I have had him about 8 months)
Large Elephant Ears coral
3 Torch Coral Frags
Mushrooms: 1 colony
Zoas: 3 colonies
I am running live rock and a huge skimmer (Tunze comline doc skimmer double head) as well as carbon in the sump and do 10% water change every weekend.
Does anyone (the gurus especially :whistling: ) have any suggestions on the best course of action to combat this White Spot outbreak. I have finally baught a second hand chiller from Christiaan and it will be arriving tomorrow night.
Thanks very much.

Guys I am looking for 1000L flow bins (IBC's - Intermediate Bulk Containers)
Not fussy about what they have had in them as long as it is not dangerous to humans or fish.
I am working on a project completely unrelated to marines, and initially need a couple of these to experiment with. If all goes well then I will need a long term supply....
Does anyone deal with these in their normal unmarine life ?
Please PM me and we can chat

so--- when can i change my name to "dropzone half-newbee " ? :)
1,2 ,3 more years ?

Is this normal behavior?
The blennie loves lying in/on the colt coral. The coral itself doesn't seem to mind and stays open 100%

I have read up on this fishless cyceling using coctail shrimp but I was wondering if there is a spicific reason for using shrimp from my understanding it just rrequires somthing to be decomposing in the tank co could just a piece of fish be used for this ( not ornimental fish but a pice of what I might cook for dinner)

Hi everyone, was just sitting and wondering why one doesn't see many "Mirror top" tanks on the marine forums. Not that I like them, but was just wondering if it's because other options look better, or is there risk of the mirror coating somehow getting into the water and poisoning the tank.

More news on the MP60
Quote:
Vortech MP60 flow gets boosted to 7,500 GPH
The upcoming Votech MP60 pump from EcoTech Marine just got more power. The Vortech MP60w ES we brought you earlier this month is going to be pushing out 7,500 GPH when it finally hits the shelves later this winter. Originally rated at 5,500 GPH, EcoTech Marine just announced through its continued engineering and development, they were able to squeeze out another 2,000 GPH from this pump adding more bang for the buck. The pump is still expected to retail for the originally quoted price of $695. The MP60 is designed for tanks from 120 to over 1,000 gallons. The company also noted that retailers are already taking pre-orders and are filling out fast.

So what do you guys think:
1) An honest feat of engineering
OR
2) This was planned all along (and the price was based around it)

I'm down in Margate. Yeah.
Snorkel in a tidal pool in front of Manaba this morning, freezed myself. Water is 20C and wind is not warmer either. Anyway, I caught a Glass shrimp in the pool. Nice looking.
Question, how good do they behave themselves? I'm going back tomorrow. And I got all the goodies to be able to get it to Pretoria alive. Just need to know if I should rather put it back, or is it an awesome extra in the tank.
Got lots of Cushion Stars, Snails and only 8 hermits. Some nice rock anemones. and 3 small short spine purple Urchins. I think my breakaway was fruitfull - CUC full.

Hi All,
I bought a 500ml Rowa Phos the other day from a LFS in midrand. It came to R626!!!!!!
I just checked online and the exact same product sells for 26GBP which at current exchange is R290. NOW, I ask with tears in my eyes - who the hell is making the extra R336?

Has anyone done any investigation on the new plasma light fittings? There is an advert in the Coral Mag for the Seashine light series for aquariums. They claim to provide 180% higher PAR values than 10,000K 400W metal halide aquarium lights and up to 500% higher PAR than standard MH's.
There is a brochure available at
Stray Light Optical Technologies with full specs and performance graphs.
I am communicating with them with regard to pricing.

hi everyone, my live rock is getting more and more junk on ... i had in the past 2 shrimps that jumped up and down when feeding was done, and they cleaned up the rocks.
with time, they died ...
can that be the reason why the live rocks are getting more and more junk on them.
i have 3 hermit crabs, 1 turbo snail and 1 dancing shrimp ...

Hello reefers :)
Okay so i need advice on the overflow size. I am in the process on building a 600x600 cube and need to know the ffg:
1. What size should the overflow on the base of the tank be. ie the overflow from DT -> sump
2. What size hole should there be from sump -> DT.
25mm, 38mm,40mm etc?
Looking for the most common sizes and those that i can get fittings for.
Thanks

Hi All
Firtsly thanks for all the help. My tank is in the fifth week of cycling and these are my parameters.
pH 8.5
KH 10
NH4 0.5
NH3 0.08
NO2 0
NO3 50
PO4 1
Cu 0
Ca 460
Temp 26
SG 1.02
Subsequent to the test I have done a 10% water change (with my new RO as feed stock). I have noticed a green plant now thriving and my soft polyps on the live rock are increasing in their brilliance and populations are beginning to increase. I also have litlle tenatacles (3 - 5) growing out of the live rock white and black rings. Please advise as to what these may be ?
Please advise on how to futher reduce the P04 and NO3.Will take photos and post tonight.
Thanks and all your advice is much appreciated.

Aqua-Medic OceanProp 15000lph review
Ok so i just recieved 2 oceanprop 15000lph pumps to play with and all i can say is WOW!!!

They are super powerful and exceptionally silent for the size, the suction cup mounting bracket attaches nicley and the pump is well balanced.

pre-programmed wave functions from a straight 5000 and 15000lph consistent flow to swapping from the 5000-15000lph on various wave sequences it also sports a night time mode where it shuts the pumps flow down to its lowest flow rate (5000lph) which is controlled by a light on the controller box sensor that reacts when to your tank lights go out.
Advantages
Silent/powerful/9-20w power consumption and controllable
Disadvantages
Large and takes up space but not as noticable be noticable in a bigger tank.
For smaller tanks i would be recomend they be concealed in an Overflow Closed Loop System (OCLS), i got these two to try and achieve this and will update on the outcome.
Other components:
In general:
My corals and fish loved it. The .65mm outlet really allows wide and gentle flow even on the highest flow setting.
Definatley worth the cash
RRP R2500

I received 2 new fish as a present on Saturday. Last night when I got home i discovered that both of them are covered with tiny white spots. I removed them to my hospital tank which i dosed with copper sulphate. What will be the correct dose of copper sulphate for a 20 liter tank. They looked very close to death this morning. I have added only a pinch of CS to the tank last night. Please help.!!

Hi all
Question to you all, I have 2 X 220Lt custom 3ft tanks now I want to setup one as Marine show tank (Fish and Reef) and the other as a sump, Now I have been doing some reading and I believe I need a DSB and a skimmer, now the sump part will be DIY so how easy is it to setup?
The Sump and tank dimensions are
Sump 92.5cm L x 45cm W x 39cm deep
Show tank 101cm L x 45cm W x 45cm deep.
How should I split the sump and what size skimmer might I need?
Any advise will be great

My CUC is diminishing on a daily basis. What could take out hermits, Asterina snails, Turbo Snails, local hermits and peppermint shrimp. The only fish I have are a sexed pair of Blue Throat Triggers. I've put down the loss of the shrimps to the triggers but the snails and hermits? Possible?
Asterina stars, sea squirts and all my softies remain untouched.
Do I start upturning rocks and start looking for a Mantis?

Hi everyone
I am planning on starting a FOWLR tank from scratch sometime in December.
This will be my first attempt at keeping a saltwater aquarium although I have had a good few years experience in keeping freshwater fish.
I have already done a fair amount of research on marine aquariums and im trying to learn enough so that I'm not completely clueless when I start.
Just wondering if anyone could give me a list of all the equipment I would need.
I've searched variuous websites but they do not usually give a good description of what is necessary vs. what is optional or what exactly each piece of equipment does.
I'm looking at getting a 200 litre - 300 litre tank. I'm not opposed to getting any equipment second hand provided that it is in good condition or unless anyone feels there are certain items that should be bought new.
Of course my budget is also a factor, I'll be looking to spend about R4000 on the tank and all equipment excluding live rock etc (please let that be possible!)
Any help will be greatly appreciated! :)
Matt

Hey all
I thought I had some Clownfish eggs just in a kind of clear fluid attached to a rock wall, they were always being guarded by the smaller of the two clowns and he would waft them with his fins at every chance he had.
Woke up this morning and they have all gone.
Does this mean they have hatched and been eaten or have they been moved somewhere?
Im new to this as u probably can tell
thanks

I am sick of my boxing shrimp, the first 5 months was cute watching him searching for food with his million arms but now he just wants fresh fish, i constantly have to rescue my new weak recovering anthia from him, he grabs the fish and just doesnt let go!!! Guys, I thought I share this as it might open up some of your eyes and make understand you guys, what chances we take.
One of my very close friends phoned me on Friday. He told me, that he lost 4 fish so far and a few of the remaining fish are also not looking 100%.
I was aware of the fact, that he bought recently two new fish from one of our sponsors. A powder blue tang and a cleaner wrasse. The powder blue showed some white spots, so he used this product. I think it´s called herbatana. It´s to thread white spots, but it didn´t help. He lost the new arrivals. Then unexpected over night he lost both clowns he had for a long time already. They developed very quick fin rot and died quick as well. He was working on Friday until late afternoon, so I went to his place to check out what´s happen in his tank. I already had brook in mind as the white spot treatment failed.
When I saw his semicirculatus with cloudy eyes and covered with a white slime, his flasher wrasse with white spots around his gills and at the fins, same for the sandshifting goby, bicolor angel and scopas tang, I realised it is brook.
His midas blenny was also missing.
Then I saw his coral beauty. Not beautyful anymore as the eyes are cloudy, the body covered in slime and the fins are rotten. He asured me, this fish was fine the day before my visit. Just as his clowns were the day before they died.
Brooklynella is probably the worst disease you can catch as I usually wipes out all your fish within no time. Threatment is very difficult and not with a very high success rate. Once brook strikes, plenty of other diseases support brook to finish all fish in the same system.
Luckily I had a bucket and some nets with me and I decided quick to break down his beautiful aquascaping to take out all his fish. 90 % of his reef was transfered into a plastic baby bathtub. The Midas blenny jumped out of one of his rocks, so we (his sister and myself) could save the blenny.
Finally I could get hold of Archilles (Thanks for your help, Shawn) and he told me what treatment I should use. Ten minutes before closing the shop, I phoned Sam´s and asked for "Myxazin". I managed to get a small bottle for 70 bucks right in time, as Friday was a public holiday. Back home I realised, I am going to braai next to a petrol pump. How stupid can a person be. Running a hatchery with the world´s only marine albinos and getting 8 brook infected fish into the same room.
So every move has to be very thougtful and I probably washed my hands 20 times on Friday. After in total 5 hours, from arrival at his place, stripping his reef, catching his fish, speeding to Sam´s, rushing back home and putting his fish into my quarantene and treating the water, I decided to post this experience.
I told my friend, that the whole situation is actually his own fault, because he buys as many others of you guys, his fish where he can get what he likes. Due to limited space, he doesn´t have a quarantene tank, so the new arrival ended up very quick in his DT. I told him, that I reckon that the powder blue and the cleaner wrasse were swimming at the LFS together with some wild caught clowns. He told me, that I was right and there were a few clarkiis in the same tank at the LFS.
Brooklynella is also known as clownfish disease. It is very common that imported clowns carry brook, but show no symtoms. Fish like the powder blue, well known to catch white spots when stressed are ideal to take on the parasite and to let it multiply on the body. Once the brook army got enough numbers, they are looking for another host. Nothing better than a nice looking DT with some nice fish as new hosts.
Treatment: Myxazin, a combination of formalin, mallachite green and something else.
The manufacturer recommend 4ml per 60 litre tank volume. Archilles recommended to dose half every 12 hours. Which I did as I trust Shawn.
90% waterchange daily and treatment with Myxazin every 12 hours.
This treatment is for fish only tanks as it is toxic for invertebrates. Overdose of Myxazin will be toxic for fish as well.
My friends fish are swimming in a bare bottom tank with just a powerhead and biological filter. No skimmer! Temperature should be not above 25 degrees as the medication sucks the oxygen. Via venturi from the powerhead, lots of air is added all the time. Treatment for 5 days in total!
Current situation:
After almost 36 hours since I got his brook infected fish, I did not loose one of them.
Besides the coral beauty, all others are recovered from cloudy eyes and slime. Fish are eating, besides the coral beauty, flasherwrasse, midas, sandshifting goby.
All fish are swimming free and they are not hiding since this morning.
The finrot of the coral beauty reached a dangerous stage as the parts of the fins that were infected doesn´t exist anymore. The color faded on the fins and what was seethrough is gone now. The fish is battling to swin as the majority of his fins are gone. Therefore he is breathing faster than normal. Still, I think he might have a chance and hopefully he starts eating.
For better understanding what are we might getting with new arrivals:
We usually keep different fish species together in our DT´s and these fishes we keep are coming from different suppliers and different oceans. Fish from one part of the oceans might be sort of immune to brooklynella, but can carry the parasite. Fish from other parts of our oceans maybe were never exposed to such parasites and therefore they will catch the disease quick with a quick victory for brooklynella.
It is like, if I would go with a slight pneumonia into the deepest south american rainforest to vistit some tribes over there. I might not even know about my pneumonia infection, but as soon as the first tribe members catches my infection, the whole tribe will be wiped out and I would be the last man standing as my immune system is good enough to win the battle against pneumonia without medication.
This tribe story already happened donkey years ago!
My friend is stupid, I´m stupid and many MASA members as well!
Why:
Every hobbyist who buys his fish from different places is taking the chance of getting a coral only tank. My friend learnt his lesson, I hopefully know exactly what I´m doing with brook in my hatchery. So for me it´s more or less a calculated risk. Still stupid of myself to get some nice brook into my hatchery.
So if you buy your fish where it´s cheap and you don´t quarantene your new arrival, please allow myself to call you stupid. I don´t want to be rude or to provoke you guys, but I want to make you guys think!;)
At the end of the day you stocked your tank with fish for a couple of thousand rands and the last new fish comes with some nice brooklynella.
Is it really worth it? Stripping the reef, catching the remaining fish and to find somebody who is stupid enough to put your infected fish into his own quarantene tank?
What I´m not going to do:
Don´t expect me to play your trouble shooter. I did this once, because my friend is one of three guys, who can always count on my help! But only once for the same stupid mistake.
I don´t mind to help with some advice here, as that is the main purpose for this forum.
That is what the coral beauty looked like yesterday. Today she looks even worse. Maybe I can get some better shots tomorrow.

Again for those that dont know, I am a complete newbie and have NO IDEA how to run a marine tank. This is a tank that I have inherited 2nd hand from family.
The livestock, filters, fans, blowers, protein skimmer and thermometer all came with the tank
so did all the test kits, which iam using now to test the water.
the water was the original water from the tank, we just emptied it into containers and re-poured it back in.
the tank is also full of live rock, i can show pics if required.
Here are my test results based on the kits that came with the Tank.
Tropic Marin KH Alkalinity Test: 5dkh
Tetra Test NO-2 NITRITE: yellow, <0.3mg/l
Tetra Test NO-3 NITRATE: quite red about 50mg/l
Tetra Test NH3/NH+4 Total Ammonia: pale green, 0mg/l
Tetra Test pH: 7.9
Salifert PO4 Profi Test Phosphate: about 0.15ppm
or 0.06 ppm phosphate-phosphor
Are there any other test I need to perform?
What if the kit is out of date? how will i know?
How can I change a particular setting, how do I decrease/Increase it?
thanks for all the help

Hey,
Introduced a YT last week, eating like a maniac and looking stunning, but seems to have a "fuzzy" coating on her lips...
At first thought it was brine shrimp stuck to her teeth, but worried that this is a fungus.
All water params in check with exception of phosphates 0.5-1.0ppm (lowered from 3ppm last week)
Any suggestions?
-
Hi all, so this morning I told my wife that I would like to get a scopas & sent her a picture, I get a call this afternoon telling to come home, lo & behold she bought it for me. problem is the YT & Clown trig are really giving it one helluva initiation ride. what can I do? it's between 4&5cm are the other guys are much bigger, should i try sump the YT or Clown? please advise...
Did drip it for close on 90 minutes, it looks healthy but obviously not taking to food yet.

Hi
Dad had a goldfish tank, hated the green water!!!
One Yard Two Houses. The garage became his living room and kitchen a year ago.
Started 2 months back building new additions to it and we decided to build a tank in the wall with 2 viewable sides, one in BBQ room that doesn't even have a braai in, is completed and one side from the garage where the maintenance will be done. Still a lot to do and to complete the new additions.
Here goes:P
DT
Size, 105cmLx61cmHx73cmW (61 is the water level)
Build with 10mm glass
Bottom plate with braces
and top with rim
Total volume 446L
Bought the MH unit 150W 20,000K and 2 39W 10,000K T5's with moon lights
Unit is 90cm long
Ordered 14,000K 150W bulb and 2x T5 blue's to change the bulbs (wrong or right:wave2:)
Currently the unit is on top of the holding tank about 10cm from water level. tank is 60cm high water level about 50cm
First problem or not but it seems so to me is the light is not enough for me, I think 6 T5's will give more light than the MH unit, not sure (advice please :wave2:)
Then the tank is 73cm wide and loose about 24cm on the front side with the wall above it and light unit will be behind the wall, think there will not be enough light in front (help needed:wave2:)
There is going to be a feeding pipe in the frame work under the wall to feed fish and I can not install a T5 light there.
Then I wanted to take pics but camera battery is flat, charging as I write this, so pictures will be up loaded shortly:P
Please guys if you see (:wave2:) help me on that.
Thanks

Hi Guys,
After not have water for 2 days the geyser decided it's time to burn out and tripped my house (you know, just to add to the experience)
I got the hugest of frights with my tank and now looking for a UPS solution. I know that I need a pure sine wave device and looking at UPS's. My power usage is at worst case (all pumps, lights, heaters etc) 600w (rounded up) (300w heater, 2x 55w power compact, 4x pumps (30w each))
I have found a 1000Va 700w UPS for R2500... would this be sufficient for my tank and what sort of uptime can i expect from it (assuming the heater isn't turned on all the time - then I'll have another problem on my hands) and is this a good price?
Any advice would be much appreciated
Regards
Thane

Hi all
as some of you might or might not know of late I had a little STN on some of my SPS & for the life of me could not work out what was going on!!
I am doing 25% water changes per week & & & all my prams are in line nothing out of sync.
So after carefully thinking about what the problem could be I started asking what has changed in my tank?
I have changed lighting 3 times in the last few months.
1 X 250W MH
1 X 400W MH
now 2 X 250W MH + Some T5's
New much bigger skimmer about 2 months old
Carx about a month old
I think one does not think that upgrading could cause a negative affect on ones system but it can when things change your system & corals need to adjust & making changes all the time can affect them more then one thinks
now that the things have not changed the last month or so my corals seem to be getting back into good shape with signs of growth

Hey all, looking for a niger trigger in the region of 7-8cm's. anyone out their willing to sell? sponsors?
-
Hi again
I finally bought the tank and moved it to my house, which was quiet a job.
I will take a pic of it setup later for you all.
I have only 5 fish in my tank.
Any help identifying them would be great when I get a picture attached.
2 are clown fish and they hang around a particular rock.
1 is bigger than the other and thats the female I think. When I was putting the live rock in the tank on setup, she kept on attacking my hand as it entered the tank. She was very quick and was very aggressive.
Why would this happen? are they normally this aggressive?
thanks again for the advice

To all the (if any) chemistry boffins out there.
I have access to as much calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate as I could ever need. But I have no idea of its quality or purity. It comes from a hyperplant which uses natural sea water and via electrolysis breaks it down to sodium hyperchloride to sterilize another sea water source.
Would these byproducts be at all useful and safe to supplement, in small doses, to a coral aquarium?

Ash

hey guys
i have a downpipe in one of my tanks but my problem is the water falling straight down the downpipe is going to be pretty noisy so i thaught of an idee to stop this.
I was thinking of putting a spiral in the pipe so that the water will follow the spiral till the bottem, this means that the water wont be falling straight down anymore but instead taking a longer path to the bottem and be more quiet. the problem is i have no idee on how to desighn such a think and to make it more difficoult, in the middle there is a return pipe. so the spiral needs to go down the pipe inbetween the middle return pipe and the big outside stand pipe.
any idees?:yeahdude:

:razz::razz: Life will be wetter down where it's better under da sea - HI all! The good news is not the brown algae, which worries me, or that my anemone stung my six line wrasse and this morning I found him/her in it's final resting place or even that my tube worm lost his crown due to excess stress and then fell off his rock and got eaten by the anemone... I have so much to learn. The good news is that my clowns are HAPPY and healthy and all my other stuff is looking good. I set up a small 70lt JEBO tank FOWLR for my boss at work (fresh water convert to saltwater), I got both my licences and jumped into the sea to see what I could find. The clowns and six line are store bought, but the coral, anemone, etc are all from the sea, tidal pools to be exact. I hope everything lasts!
I am setting up my 120lt custom made glass tank soon. I am setting up an 8foot for a friend of mine (will be excellent) and during the course of this comming year I will set up my 1200lx600hx400w tank. These are samples and the finished product will be for sale for anybody who wants to delve into the rapture which is marine fish. I will post some pictures soon and will appreciate critisism and advice!:1:

Hi Guys
When I fired up my DSB, about 18 months ago, I used local live sand, below the low water level mark, but my problem is I think the high content of minerals in the sand, from Richards Bay.
From 100k's north and about 50k's south of Richards Bay, there is heavy mining in the dunes along the coast, mining for mainly zircon, titania and iron ore. It is so rich the mineral deposits, that you walk on the beach and your feet are black from the minerals that have stuck to you. Some places even the beach looks like people have poured oil on it. The Mineral deposits along our area are very very high.
Now my problem is for over about a year, I have had a non stop battle with GHA, I have tried everything you can, and the last few weeks I can only think that my problems are definatly coming from the DSB.
Do you guys know if zircon, titania and iron ore will be high in phosphates?
Also I thought that they would leach out, be absorbed, and end of story, but does it continue to leach and will it ever run out of reserves?
-
Hey,
Whilst hunting for a hermit in the cold water near knysna i saw a little red thingy attached to a twig.
I picked him up and brought him home with little hope that he'd survive... I was wrong!!
I now have not 1 but 2 happy healthy nennies, around an inch in diameter.
I think they are plum anenomes... Please confirm or disaggree with me... I recently lost a peppermint shrimp (as in cannot find him~) and was wondering if it were possible that one of the nennies ate a morsel the same size as him!!
Any ID and links will be hugely appreciated!

Hi guys, got a little octopus today, I will let Sean K amuse you guys with how it was caught, but neverless, I got it in a drum with air pump, will get a pico for it tomorrow, but what size should I get, it is the size of a fingernail.
Also when I put LR in, I will never see it again cause it will go into hiding, so I was thinking of getting a stone or something, covering it with crushed coral or something, give me ideas. Maybe some zoas I got I will gooi in there, but I want nice blue lighting for it.
Basically I will do like daily water changes from my DT, something like that,

HEEELLlllooooOOooo
I started out with fresh water fish for about 7years and decided to try marine.
The tank has been cycling for about 8 weeks with live rock so for the last weeks i have been looking at my rocks and wiping the glass off patiently (and yes every1 thought i was loosing my noodles:lol: )...
Its now about 2 months bought some fish and everything is going "OK, i guess"...lol
I have to admit that its a bit of a pain in the a$$ to maintain a marine tank.
well don't know much about marine ,but yep...at least the live stock is still alive :yeahdude:
About my tank
- 1200x 600x 600
- 4X T5 lights (2- blue and 2 white)
- 300W heater
- about 20kg of live rock i guess...
- got a biocolour blenny, tomato clown, damsel and a chrome.
- and of course a protein skimmer, sump and a stinky power head.
that's that...

All of the 7 week old fry are eating frozen whole mysis shrimp! :slayer:
These fry are all offsprings from the previous batch that I raised.

I would like to share this with everyone. In May when i was at the coast i filled a 50ltr bucket with sea sand to use for my new DSB's i was planning. Last week i installed the two tanks, added NSW, washed the sand with RO water and filled the DSB's. The next day i tested the water, the system was not yet connected to my DT, i was stunned to see all the critters in the sump, they look like pods or sealice, about 5-8mm in size. How can this be after 4 months.
-
Can anyone advise me where is the best place to get a tank built in Cape Town, which LFS does a good job and the best pricing, I am looking for 1300 X 550 X 600 with external overflow.
-
Hi guys, thought for all the picture junkies, I post some of my new broodstock- and maturity system. There where the pepsi bottle is standing, I´m planning a shrimp broodstock system for four different species. At this stage I set up one tank on top, one in the middle and the filter underneath. The sump is right next to the filter.
This is the second skimmer I built and I use the 3000 bubbleblaster pump. Still have to finish the pre-(milk-) filter.
That is the filter in German-style, no DSB wanted! I filled it today, but still need to fetch another 400 litre to run the system.
How it works is explained below. Take note, the German thinks twice and does it once. No need to cross pipes at all!;)
This picture explains the weird looking plumbing from the last two pictures above. I´m running the system with a 5000 litre waterblaster pump with 60 watts power consumption. So to get enough current into the tanks, but saving some electricity, I decided to pump the water only in the top tanks. From there, their overflow leads as a return into the tanks below. Note, the tanks are drilled in the middle of the back. The overflow pipe inside of each tank can be moved horizontal. Which allows me to drain 50% of the system, while the system can still run. So I can add every day 50 or 100 litre fresh NSW without changing parameters to quick.

http://www.zeovit.com/photopost/data...turf_algae.jpg
After losing my naso and yellow tang, this horrible stuff has popped up in the last month on a few rocks and is spreading. I never saw it before so not sure if one of them was keeping it in check. Its starting to choke a few SPS colonies that are making a comeback. Its seems tougher than hair algae and cannot scrub it off.
I've also got a nuisance brown algae that traps detritus so I'm scrubbing that periodically but cannot make a dent in it.
I'm gonna keep lights off for 3-4 days to see if that helps but advice is needed please.
Nitrates and phosphates are undetectable with salifet and seachem test kits.
Thanks:peroni:

hey guys
i need some advice on an underwater camera as requested by a freind of mine.
he is in zanzibar diving(as his job) how lucky is that, he does tours for people of the reefs etc and he decided with his money he wants to get a camera that he can both use outside the water and in.
the problem is that it cant be a dslr as he doesnt know hptogrophy that well and cant carry it with on every dive so a point and shoot is whats needed.
so if anyone has any advice please let me know

Hey, I have been looking for my peppermint shrimp (which dissapeared amongst the rocks~) with a small LED torch... and look what i found (not Mr Minty):
Not one... but LOTS!! Max 3mm diameter...They seem to be mainly on the LR-
What are they eating?!
Do they get bigger?!
Are they going to take over?!
Am i paranoid?
Hehe, new parent syndrome- got my first few fishies!
-
After a long period of not feeding my Malu/Magnifica(not sure which species it is!) i tried feeding it a 'crab stick' which he chowed but he did not like :( found the 'crabstick' in the overflow next morning. I always fed him mussel meat and did that and he took it and loved it as he always did but how much nutrition is in mussels? is there anything better?
Thanks dudes

Hi everyone, Please try and ID this growth on two pieces of my Live Rock (was bought as Fiji rock).
It's mostly very light to light pink, with some parts (lower down) white. Basically looks as if the rock was "dipped in melted wax". It has many tiny holes all over. Sometimes it "sheds" a very fine transparent filmy like "covering/skin". On certain of the pink parts, and after shedding the thin "film", tiny polyps appear, which are extremely light pink/white.
Furthermore, coralline or GHA doesn't seem to grow on it (only on small parts of the rock that aren't covered by this pink "growth/covering", and I doubt whether its coralline (sp?) because I have coralline elsewhere in my tank which my Urchin eats, but the Urchin doesn't touch this pink "growth/covering".
I'd really like to know what it is so that I can take proper care of it. Pics below aren't the best but if you know this "growth" you should be able to recognise it.

Hi Guys
Wasn't quite sure where to post this
Been a while since I've had marine fish, but I've decided to get back into it.
I have received a quote for a new tank, glass dimensions 1500*500*650 holding 600L, and a 120L sump. Including the stand and wood finish I want, the cost came in at R8000. Is this a resonable price? To me it seems quite fair, as this is roughly what I would pay for a new "pre-built" tank according to the places I have seen.
Any comments?

All my piping runs underground as i designed my house with my tank as a full 360 degree viewing b4 entering my living area. unfortunately, by listening to bad advice, n not doing my own research, afta 1.5 yrs, my tank is nothing but a SaD excuse for a reeftank. I had a 2.5*0.5*0.8tank before which settled beautifully... when i moved i decided on my current dimensions... Luckily i was saved from dumping my tank afta a visit by my daughter's preschool class, and as i was xplaining to them abt the ins n outs of my tank, i somehow realised i would b nuts to give up. So here i am, gna redo my lab, n gna get my tank to wot it should be... and the best thing i could do is join the forums... First thing i am gna do is get myself a new skimmer preferably an ATB Elegance Giga skimmer, n upgrade my profilux II to profilux III. Luckily i found sum1 that is a software developer and also into setting up reeftanks.... So wish me luck... And oh yeah... ANY ADVICE will b greatly appreciated....

Hi guys
My sump has a leak and i need to replace it urgently. 3ft
-
Got up this morning and the temp in the main tank was 21C
So i had a look and the return chamber of the sump was almost empty, thus no warm water going to the top, oh and the damn floor was wet. So i think the sump has a leak as i couldn't see anything wet except on the floor at the sump, so possibly a crack in the base of it?
Best way to go about fixing it?
-
hi guys
so looking at my one tank ive been slacking on finishing i was thinking, what would be the best corals for this tank?
it is 700long * 600wide * 500 high
first i wanted to go full sps with some LPS on the sand but ive been a bit slack in the desighn of how to do the hectic filtration for a full blown sps tank running ULNS so looking at it today i was thinking of doing the full tank LPS instead with a few plating montis.
so i would like all you guys imput.
BTW softies are out of the question because they are for my other tank.
i would also like to explain this first.....
I love the sps look but i worked out the cost of the setup, filtration, flow etc and figured it will be just too much money especially for someone like me that just started working.
I was hoping going LPS will allow me to save somewhat on the setup and give me a bit more freedom to lack on husbandry when i dont have time.

So...
I've had my tank for about 7months now 100cm x 40cm x 40cm.
I goy it with built-on sump at the back which is only 10cm wide...could fit anything exept cotton, bio balls and normal filter media.
Everything is running like clock work but i want more fish and more everything, lol.
I currently have:
a Sailfin Tang
3 x Percula Clowns
1 x Yellow tail Damsel
1 x Blue Damsel
(1 x African clown who is livving in breeding tank, coz other clowns want to murder it)
1 x Turbo snail
1 x Big Pink tip anemone
Would like extra:
1 x Regal tang
1 x Foxface Rabbitfish
2 x Gobies
5 x Hermits
1 x Cleaner Shrimp
So i just finished biulding my under tank sump (70 x 30 x 30)cm and got a second hand 1.2m x 60cm x 45cm tank i want to move everything over too...
I need advise on the following:
Currenly have only crushed coral as substrate, but would like to have sand (got it from guy who brought back like 20kg from his last Beach Holiday).
Should i mix the crushed coral and the sand or just stick to one?
Should i attempt to have DSB in Display tank aswell?

Hello all
first time poster
I have been given the oppurtunity to purchase a 2nd hand setup from my uncle
he has a decent sized tank, with a protein skimmer, external filter, 2 blowers on the glass and loads of live rock. a few fish, 2 clowns and a shrimp thing and a toadstool thing.
I have never had a marine setup before and come to you guys for help and advice.
He has a base of coral, which is a bit ugly to be honest, I would much prefer sand.
is this a big job to chage the base from crushed coral to sand?
also, the live rock is a bit green in places, should this be left or cleaned somehow?
I may take some pics and show you if i can round to his house.
He said its easy to move, just empty the water level to about 25% and take out the live rock and wrap in paper. we would also be draining the water and refilling it.
is this ok?

I have been wanting to clean the skylight over my tank for a while now as I know it is affected by dust, and no rain for four months or so. Also the light in my tank at midday is a little yellower than before.
I cleaned it and at midday say a huge difference in the whiteness of the light, much whiter and crisper.
I did a test on another sky light that I could do a proper comparitive test on.
Before cleaning par level 870.
After 1490
71% increase in light.
Corals are going to love me once they get over the shock.:)
Remember to clean your lights, it's far more important than you think. Don't waste your electricity and bulbs.

With Mexican snails being the new algae eater of choice in SA, does anyone have pics? Google gave me every kind of snail so I'm not sure.
I see local stockists are really taking advantage though as they are about $2 overseas.

I use my Kalk stirrer in the traditional method, via my auto top of RO water. A quick question, I would like to boost my calcium level with a powdered form of calcium made by Cape Coral care called calcium booster.
The recommended method is to add it to your RO reservoir which would then dose calcium enriched water via auto topup. Will this affect my Kalkstirrer in anyway given that I topup RO via it ?
While I'm at at, does anyone add any additives to their Salt Mix during the aeration period, before adding it to their system, are there any con's to doing this. I ask because perhaps I should dose the calcium into my prepared salt mix before I add it to my system via my weekly water change instead.
PS : I have a CARX but my calcium levels stay just under 400ppm, I suspect my CARX cant cope with my calcium demand given my stocking level

So ive decided to setup a frag tank, mainly thanks to Midasblenny because he gave me the tank :)
I plan to build "steps" using eggcrate and have the powerhead and heater under there.
The skimmer will sit in the corner (elevated) and the steps will be built around it.
Tank Dimensions:
600X300X500
Filtration:
my trusty old TS1 Skimmer
HOB filter running seagel and floss
Flow:
Hydor Koralia 4 (if it aint strong enough, I have a sunsun 12000LPH)
Heating:
100W no name heater
Lighting:
Still unsure, thinking either T5's or CFL's
Some pics:

Thats all for now

After finishing blowing detritus off the LR I snapped the tap on the skimmer ball valve. Luckily it snapped in the off position, it just has a slow drip which has a container under it now.
Are there any miracle ways to fix this or do I need to cut it out and replace the whole ball valve?

hi:wave2:
im very soon im getting a marine tank its all planned and everything theres just one thing that doesent make sense. how do you keep a coral in one spot? wont it move around?
-
Hi Guys,
Firstly, apologies for being so scarce. I have not been around for a while, as I have been overseas to the UK and China, but I have been following everyone’s progress and systems.
Listen, I have a really odd thing to raise here. I just feel that I need to do something about the savagery that is going on down the natal coast line. I have lived in Amanzimtoti / Durban for the last 11 years, and when I first moved here, I would walk along the rocks and watch all the fishermen. On many occasion, I would take buckets full of these little spotted toby fish from the rock pools and release them back into the ocean. These fishermen seem to feel that the Toby’s are a vermin and need to be killed. On more than one occasion, I witnessed guys reeling these little guys in, and then instead of taking it off the hook and just releasing it back into the ocean, they would literally just swing the rod around and smash the fish against the rocks to get it off the hook.
Others would take them off the hook, and found pleasure in throwing them as hard as they can against the rock in order to hear the sound it makes when the puffer explodes. The large majority would just throw them in the infested and stench ridden rock pools to die a slow death in the hot natal sun. I have not seen many of these fish around for years, but strangely enough, their numbers seem to have increased again, and I have been noticing them around on the beaches. I went for a walk along the Amanzimtoti main beach yesterday, and took a walk on to the rocks, as I noticed a guy landing quite a nice size fish. When I got onto the rocks, my heart sank. Toby’s lay everywhere. All the rock pools were overflowing, and they had just been thrown around on the rocks. I counted more than 20 in one small rock pool, and could see the vast majority were already dying.
When confronting one of the "fellows" on the rocks as to why they don’t just release them back into the ocean, they merely say that these fish are pests and eat there bait. Things have got heated on more than one occasion to the point that a full on physical brawl has almost ensued.
Whilst this fish may seem insignificant to some, I for one have a problem with the inhumane way that these “locals” treat them. My son is 3 now, and I fear that if something is not done, by the time he reaches my age, you probably will not see them anymore.
I am considering putting together an article for the local newspapers to highlight the wrongdoings of these barbarians who call themselves civilized, but more importantly, to try and put some constructive and educational information together to try and educate these guys about the species, and the importance it plays on our coast line. From what I have found online, I believe I have an ID of Canthigaster Amboinensis? Maybe some of the local and more knowledgeable guys could help me out with that one?
For this reason, I ask, if any of you could assist with some facts and other information, I would greatly appreciate it. Sadly, I am off to the beach now with a bucket and a net to go try and catch a few more and release them back into the sea.
Regards,
Sheldon.

Afternoon, I am one of those who started with a smaller (90 liter) tank and now plan to go for +/- 200 liter. I have read an article that the switch over can be done more or less as follows:
By filling the new tank 3/4 full of water and let it run for about 24 hours. Then test for pH and temperature and if no difference proceed with the move of your life rock and gravel and lastly your fish.
Can some one please tell me whether this sounds correct and what about coral/ Can it also be moved together with the fish? (I do not plan to run the old tank at the same time any longer). What about nitrite and nitrate levels at this stage?
Please advise.

Please can you tell me where there I can buy a Semicircular Angel Fish asap? Thanks
-
I am hoping that there are some mathematical geniuses in the group.
If 1kg of red sea salt mixed with 30L water gives you a specific gravity of 1.021, how could I determine how much salt I need to create 2L with a specific gravity of 1.015.
I know mix and measure is probably the easiest way, but I was wondering if there was a easier way to determine the weight
Thanks guys

hey all.starting up my reef tank again after about 5 years and was just checking the net to see if theres anything new about.i must say this is a very informative forum and i've been reading around the forum for the past 2 hours before finally saying hi.will be starting her up next week with approx 20kg live rock.(standard 1.2m tank)the price of electricity has made me look around for alternatives to MH and i think ive just found that on the forum as well in the form of LEDs.will be looking at doing everything the same as my last setup as it proved to be very successfull to me.nothing fancy, just gonna do the basics right and give her lots of love.(i'm a bit nutty when it comes to caring for my tank).anyways, will certainly be roaming the forum a lot in the future.

Hi guys, I was with Sean K this morning looking around at the fish, saw some interesting fish, especially the flies, and one I can't ID,
Is this one local?, is called the Lined Butterfly, (Chaetodon lineolatus), but the referances I got for it, it does not seem local,
@ Sean K you agree the one looked like this?
Also saw these, fairly commen,
vagabond butterfly,
Racoon
auriga, saw millions of these!!!
and these, coachmen, and their idol boets
I think I have seen two of these before, but without the blue, didn't bother cause was always after reef safe fish, Golden fly
Also seen one of the two below, they very similar, don't know which is local,
Mertensii fly
Pearlscale fly
Am definatly going to be collecting flies this year, will have a new tank to put this years juvies in...........any other local flies?

Hi everyone
I'd like to find out of anyone in the CPT area travels to or knows someone who travels to Windhoek on a weekly or regular basis? I have some equipment that needs to go to a fellow reefer in Windhoek rather urgently.
If you know of someone who is traveling up that way soon and won't mind taking up a couple of things, please PM me.
Thanks!

okay, so we have moved and finally settled in to our new place........so i decided to get the builders back in and finally start a large tank again.
it will be a in wall picture frame like tank with access from behind and sides for maintanance etc etc
i was inspired by a thread posted by viper that featured this tank
Tank of the Month - July 2008 - Reefkeeping.com
so here are the dimensions
length..............1500mm
width..................650mm
height..................650mm
sump..................1000mm x 500mm x 500mm
the tank will be made in 12mm starfire glass which has been orderd and should be delivered soon.
lighting:
reefinmates is designing a 10 x 54 watt t5 pendant with dali electronic dimmable ballasts, with a profilux led lightning stick intergrated that will run of a profilux 3 ex.
t5 tubes will be giesemann
3 x 54 watt aquablue + (white)
3 x actinic + (blue)
2 x aqua-pink
2 x pure actinic (purple)
flow: tunze overflow with tunze eco drive return pump,
internal flow.......just got it yesterday....2 x tunze 6105 streams with 7095 multi controller and tunze wave box.
skimmer: was thinking of importing the bubble king, or was close to ordering the new reefoctopus extrenal cone with automated cleaning cup, but was made a great deal by tunze, so am installing the new external master doc (page 6)
http://www.tunze.com/fileadmin/downl...interzooen.pdf
tank will be run on NP pellets and zeo, in reactors, and a dual chamber tunze mechanical filter.
also will be installing either a profilux 4-way dosing pump or a new dosing pump designed by a good friend.
kalkstirrer: awaiting the arrival of the new reefoctopus' kalk stirrer
ph, temp and auto top up will be run on the profilux 3 ex and top up water supplied with
the waterboy reefmaster evolution r.o.unit.
substrate: undecided......either the indo-pacific mix or fiji pink from carribsea, mixed with a few kilo's of live sand
will post some pics of the proposed area for the tank build in a few minutes

Hey Guys, need some input.
I have bubble algae in my tank :(
I am going to scrape the majority off, but there is a ton under my Chalice. Not sure how to get at that cause I don't want to break the coral. Any clever ideas?

Hey everyone,
Seen as though there has been a lot of interest in ULNS/LNS, I thought I would start a thread to show how much it costs to run one of these systems. I'm going to use the NeoZeo as an example as that is the one I am most familiar with.
Initial Costs:
Reef Octopus / Reeftek ZF-140 Zeolith Filter Reactor: R1733.00
NeoZeo Zeolite Media: R240.00/Kg
MB7 500ml: R208.00
Reef BioFuel 500ml: R208.00 or Bottle of Vodka R70.00
The initial start up cost is then: R2251-2389 depending on which carbon source you decide to use. I use vodka as it is cheaper and lasts longer. This price is regardless of the size of your tank as you have to purchase these products initially
Running Costs:
The following will give a monthly running cost of the system per gallon of system volume.
Zeolite media needs a 25% replacement per month. The recommended amount of zeolite media is 1Kg/100g.
25% Zeolite replacement: R0.6/month/gallon
Carbon source needs to be added twice a day, at the moment I am using 2ml a day.
Carbon Source: R0.04/month/gallon
Bacteria source needs to be added weekly at a rate of 5ml/50 gallons.
Bacteria Source: R0.21/month/gallon
Iodine needs to be dosed weekly or better daily. I dose a ml of Brightwell Iodion Liquid a day.
Iodine Suppliment: R0.07/month/gallon
Potassium needs to be dosed if you are using zeolite media as they remove potassium. I use Brightwell potasium solution.
Potassium: R1.00/month/gallon
Then once low nutrient have been reached you need to dose amino acids to keep your corals alive and happy. I use SeaChem reef plus as it is cheaper than the brightwells amino acids.
Amino Acids: R0.35/month/gallon
This covers the basic supplementation needed for running the NeoZeo method of ULNS. There is still colour enhancing supplements as well as general coral supplements. Whilst running a ULNS it is also vital that alk, calcium and magnesium be kept constant and in the required range.
The total running cost of this system is then: R2.27/month/gallon. This is just a rough estimate though if anyone was interested.

This thread is a thread designed for people entering this hobby, it is by no means the be all and end all of sump designs.
I am also not going to argue the merits of this vs dozens of other sump options.
One of several accepted sump design concepts that is often recommended on MASA is the so called 3 chamber Skimmer DSB Return sump. This thread is an attempt to answer new members questions on how to implement THIS design.
Before you choose to go with this Sump design, it is your obligation to research the filtration and understand what each element of the sump does and whether an alternative filtration system may perform better for you... with that in mind before you choose this design make sure that you have read up about the following as a minimum and have decided that these systems are not for you at this stage or decide how you would like to incorporate these systems into the 3 chamber system
ATS, Zeo, De-Nitrifyer, NP reducing Pellets, Bio Balls, macro Algae, carbon phos remover etc etc etc .......
Right now that that is out of the way, lets design a 3 chamber Skimmer, DSB and return Sump.
First off the sump should be as big as you can make it .....
Chamber 1 is the Skimmer Chamber ..... the size of this chamber is dictated by either the size of your current skimmer of the size of a proposed skimmer upgrade.
Chamber 3 is the return chamber and should be big enough to accommodate the return pump, usually this chamber can also host a chemical filter such as a carbon filter.
Chamber 2 is simply the biggest that it can be, and must be able to have a sand bed of at least 15cm in depth, preferably 18cm.
the image above is the basic basic sump and would work regardless of any additions, the additions i am going to suggest below are add ons and are not strictly required.
A small box where the water enters, this helps to keep the detritus in suspension.
A DSB works best with laminar flow, this deflection plate helps to stop turbulance over the DSB
When deciding on the height of the divisions bear a couple of things in mind, the water must flow from chamber 1 to chamber 3 hence the height of the divider bewteen chamber 2 and 3 should be lower than between chamber 1 and 2. Distance Y should be at least 15cm and preferably 18cm, Distance X should be at least 5cm longer than distance Y even more if you are considering running macro algae on top of the DSB
An RO resivoir can be added as a 4th chamber, in any configuration, shown here is a 4th chamber at the back, the float switch controlling the water level should be in the return water chamber (3)
two points to remember when constructing the sump, Your Skimmer must be able to fit through the Gap indicated by J. In order to prevent flooding in the case of a power failure, the volume of water contained within gap K (excluding the volume that the skimmer will occupy) must be greater than the volume that will drain out of the display tank. as a rough guide assume that 1cm of water will drain from your DT therefore multiply Length and width of your DT by each other and then by 1cm, convert to Litres and ensure this is less water than is accommodated in Gap K of your sump. Failure to do so may result in a grumpy wife.
Cubes sometimes require a different shaped sump to the traditional rectangle sump, pictured above is a simple variation on the normal design, note that a small powerhead may be required to create laminar flow in this design.
Often tanks are on stands with a wooden support in the middle, simply connecting 2 smaller sumps with 2 x 50mm pipes will achieve the same result as a standard sump.
Guys note once again I am not saying this is the ONLY way to build a sump, it is one of the ways and simply meant to answer a question that seems to continiously be asked by new members.

Iv been using 2 oceans water for the past year now, never really achieved great colouration from corals, algae issues, had high phos issues etc etc.
I have decided that I want to switch over to Salt mix and go ULNs with the aid of zeo reactor or Fauna marin ultra bak/bio route.
Thing is,seeing that my pockets dont overflow with cash,I need to decide what to switch first ,salt or zeo?
will it be a waste to go zeo route with 2oceans water?

This thread is specifically designed for people just entering the marine hobby, In most (if not ALL) circumstances a sump is required to have a successful marine tank.
Trying to balance a pump from the display tank with a pump from the sump (a two pump system) regardless of safety valves, cut off switches etc is inviting disaster :nono:
Either the Sump must be fed by gravity (when the sump is located below the DT) or the DT must be fed by gravity (when the Sump is above the DT) ...
Now depending on your specific design criteria and space available there are a number of possibilities when designing an overflow (whether this is a DIY project or a a custom build by a LFS)
The list below is not an exhaustive list by any means and I encourage other members to add as they see fit...... but please add images as well as descriptions
There are two basic categories, a drilled tank and a non drilled tank. A drilled tank is infinately more superior to a non drilled tank, a non drilled tank relies on a syphon system.
Option 1 - Non Drilled Tank, Overflow Box
There are a variety of commercial units available and several DIY versions in the MASA DIY forum. I do not like these and would not generally recommend them, although some people have been running these systems for a long time with little hassle.
Option 2 - Drilled Tanks
Here follows a series of images which show different overflows for drilled tanks, be the hole in the base or the side panel. Note that these images are schematic only and that they show the concept not specific measurements. I would strongly recommend re-enforcing every hole drilled with a 6mm glass patch with the same diameter hole drilled in it, this may be viewed as overkill but rather safe than sorry ....
Corner overflow V1

This overflow takes up little space (reef real estate), is an easy DIY project, can be covered with persbex etc to hide the inner workings, but unlike the coast to coast versions shown below, does not have a great surface skimming ability.
Corner Overflow V2

This overflow takes up less space (reef real estate) than the square corner overflow box, is an easy DIY project, can be covered with persbex etc to hide the inner workings, but unlike the coast to coast versions shown below, does not have a great surface skimming ability. Due the the extremely small space available to work in, making any adjustments to the durso etc is difficult.
Central box overflow

This overflow takes up little space (reef real estate), is an easy DIY project, can be covered with persbex etc to hide the inner workings, but unlike the coast to coast versions shown below, does not have a great surface skimming ability (it does however have a better surface skimming ability than the corner overflow options)
Skinny central overflow V1

This overflow takes up very little real estate in the tank and exits out the side panel with a tank connector. the skimming ability is not particularly great and one runs the risk of getting things stick in the overflow due to it being so thin.
Skinny central overflow V2

Very similar to the above version, this simply exits out of the base as opposed to the side panel.
Internal overflow box

Situated inside the tank but only in the upper portions this version of an overflow takes up little real estate, Skimming is on par with the versions above but this version MAY proove noisy as adding a durso in such confined space may be problematic
External overflow box

From a real estate perspective this is the best overflow design as it takes up zero space, surface skimming is acceptable, however the external box attached to the tank may look unsightly
Coast to Coast V1
This offers excellent surface skimming but some feel this overflow is unsightly.
Coast to coast V2
Again, excellent surface skimming but takes up real estate and is unsightly.
Skinny Coast to Coast

Good surface skimming, and takes up little real estate but shares the risks as outlined with the other skinny overflows. A similar version to the image above is often used where the hole is in the base, as shown in the image "skinny central overflow V2" shown above
Remember all overflows should be constructed in the same thickness of glass as the sides of the tank, not thinner
Hopefully you can now make an educated choice as to how you want your new tank to be designed and built

I have a small 40L Aquarium. On the moment I some pieces of Live Rock and a Blue-Legged Hermit Crab and a Yellow Watchman Goby.
Light is a 8000K White tube.
Filter is a HOTB filter/skimmer (900L/H)
Now the question is what coral can I put in the tank. And if I even can.

I have just noticed that the Arogonite in my DT is turning brown in places, my tank has been running now for around six weeks, all the water parameters are within limits.
Any advice would be welcome.

Hey all,
Just a query - I have found that sometimes a pump will start to make a "ticking" sound - like the tips of the impeller are hitting the side or something. Often it is intermittant, and just turning the pump on or off will solve it. But on one pump on particular it is quite bad
Does anyone have a suggestion on what to do? Clipping the impeller tips etc?

hi everyboady :wave2:
i have a 55L tiny tank but i really like marine what fish could i put in sush a small tank?
and are there ANY invertabrates or corals that would work? just want to know if the idea is possible. oh and i cant spent to much cash on this project :(

Hi.
The marine bug has bitten me again, so I want to plan my next tank.
The actual implementation will be a few months off, but I want to get my plans organised.
I am planning on building a 1600 x 800 x 450 (water level at 400)
That gives me a display just over 500L.
For the lights I will probably go LED. I am currently building a custom LED canopy for my planted tank and the result of that will probably make my decision for me.
My plan is to stock a BTA or 2 and further just fish.
The fish I really want is :
Powder blue tang
Yellow tang
Clown Pair
Fire angel
Chromis school
Now the part where I am stuck - Filtration
1)Is a DSB worth the effort and would you add a refugium on the dsb
2)Is an algae scrubber worth the effort
3)What skimmer would you suggest?
And then flow:
What would you suggest to create flow bearing in mind that there will be anemones in the tank.
Thanks

So i got an urchin the other day.
I dont have a picture of it but i can explain what he looks like.
green / purple with short white spines.
He looks like a collector urchin.
He was motoring around the tank nicely all over till yesterday. Where he started loosing his spines. I know this is not a good sign.
He still has some of his spines left. And i can see them move so looks like he's still alive. But he's not moving.
My first question is what would he eat? I know most of them eat algae, nori and coralline.
The second question is how do i know he's dead and do urchins contaminate tanks and release toxin's into the water?

Well 25 September is Project Aware day.
What are you doing to help clean up the environment.
Ideas on each sub/section, marine club/section to do their bit for this national day.
I will not be able to make it to the coast to help out their but i will be doing my bit along the river close to our diving club.
Lets see if MASA can make an impact on the environment. Come on club organisers lets get a comp together and include a social day.

Hi George
I cam across this from Marco
Quote:
just like the tunze stream pumps can take the adaptor that allows for a battery to take over if the power fails,
tunze has a new range of return pumps that george now has on order.
basically it will be the same....a return pump that you buy, purchase the extra battery connector, go to a1 radio buy a house alarm battery and trickle charger and you away......
the pump will run on mains power and will be trickle charging the battery the whole time......if the power fails the battery kicks in and the pump keeps running........no down time.
i ran a 6055 stream on a 12volt battery on itls lowest setting for 5 days....it could have run longer but i was on my way to mauritius so i had to turn it on again to charge incase something happened when i was away
|
could you please advise me what are my options as in what i need and the cost? I am interested in the Stream backup and not the return pump as the return pump would be out of my price range.

Hardware for saleThread title: Custom 1.2m tank
Location: Cape Town
Shipping or Collection only: Collection only
Photo's and description/list of items for sale: Hi Guys and Girls
I have a custom 4ft for sale(120l*50w*70h) in 10mm glass, it has glass sliders and two light boxes(water level at 60) as well as two holes drilled for wires. It has a black finish(on top, bottom and sliders). It was used for FW so it does not have a overflow. And no copper meds were used in this tank as I mainly use salt to help prevent from any disease.
Looking for R1000
Notes: The reason for selling is to make place for a smaller marine tank. The 1.2m is going to be too costly for me. Really need it to go ASAP

Hi All
I currently have some cheato in my sump & am looking to remove it & rather run an ATS.
The reason is the light I am using & where my cheato is
If I remove the cheato will an ATS be a replacement?
I know some people run both I could but really would like to get away from "Free" floating things & lots of light in my sump.

Hi I am planing on colecting some live sand to add to the biodiversity of my tank when I go diving some deep reefs this weekend.

Hi guys
Well i have been active on the forum for a while now and i think i can finally show what i have been up to. I bought a tank from sweetnsour a while back and started getting all the bits and pieces together. Here is my list of equipment and livestock. I also got LR and water from another reefer so what i started off with was a fairly mature amount of water. Tell me what you guys think.
My only loss so far was a bi-color angel. Him and the jumping bean were getting along just fine until one day they didn't. So only one dwarf angel for me from now on
Equipment:
-270L tank - 100L x 600W x 500H. Steel stand. About 40kg crushed coral
-3ft sump with 3 chambers - inlet with skimmer followed by DSB with chaeto and then return chamber
-Tunze DOC classic skimmer rated for 1000L (yeah i know)
-6x T5 39W tubes
-2000lph return pump
-Sun sun powerhead for waterflow in display tank
-Filter pump with a combination of carbon/phosphate filtration, made by Seachem i forget the name
-Bag of Purigen in return chamber hanging over the baffle so water flows over it
-2x 300w heaters in sump
-Um what else?
Livestock:
-Tomato clown
-False clown
-Spotted fox face
-Scopas tang
-Blue Regal tang
-Flameback Angel aka jumping bean
-Mozambiquen blennie
-Bangai cardinal
-Royal gramma
-Banded goby
Clean-up crew
-Blue legged hermit
-2x Cleaner shrimp
-Peppermint shrimp
-Camel shrimp
-Brittle star
-4x Turbo snails
Coral
-10 kinds/colors of Zoa
-Pulsating Xenia
-Hammer
-Frog spawn
-2x Pin cushion
-A few SPS
-Galaxy
-2 colors of GSP
-4 different leathers
-Purple/blue moonrock/favite
-Colt coral
-2x Ricordea
-Various mushrooms
It's quite a list if u take into consideration that i only started about 2 months ago and if i had a favorite coral i like to collect its zoa. I love the variety u can get. If there's one coral i would still put in it is a Kenya Tree. Any donations welcome
And now for some pics, not the bestest camera in the world though

Low-light Scrubbers
Here is something new, different, and untested. I have not built one yet, but it should work for either SW or FW if the size and flow are correct. It is a vertical scrubber that you hang on the wall, and it requires NO electricity. It is a "low-light" scrubber:
I got the idea when reading a study about algae growth in freshwater streams:
"Algal Response to Nutrient Enrichment In Forested Oligotrophic Streams". Journal of Phycology, June 2008.
ALGAL RESPONSE TO NUTRIENT ENRICHMENT IN FORESTED OLIGOTROPHIC STREAM1 - Veraart - 2008 - Journal of Phycology - Wiley Online Library
"Algae inhabiting forested streams have the capacity to acclimate to low light intensity. These light conditions affect their photosynthetic efficiency, but do not impair growth rates, in particular, in the case of thin diatom-dominated communities."
In other words, they don't filter as much per square inch (or per square cm) of area, but they do operate on very low light. Apparently it is mostly diatoms that grow in these low-light conditions.
The advantage of a scrubber like this should be obvious: It requires no electricity to power the screen. It still requires a pump, however, since the top of the scrubber would (probably) be high above the top of the tank. The scrubber is designed to operate on the light already available in the room, which would vary greatly depending on how strong the light bulbs are in the room, and how much sunlight comes in through the windows. The more average light the room has, the smaller the scrubber can be. The less light, the bigger it needs to be. Basically, the scrubber uses more area to make up for less light. And since the light is so low, the type of algae that is able to survive is (apparently) mostly diatoms.
Just as with regular scrubbers, the wider the unit it, the more flow is required. So in the spirit of keeping it from consuming too much electricty, a smaller pump could be used if the unit were narrow and tall. But the bottom of the unit will need to drain into either the tank or the sump, so there will be a limit to how low the bottom can be. And the limit to the top will be the ceiling. A tradeoff will need to be made, maybe so that it looks like a vertical picture on the wall. Fortunately the flow does not need to be as much as a regular scrubber, since it is one-sided only.
It will have to be experimented with to see if a clear cover is needed to stop any water dropletts from splashing out. Many people have decorative waterfalls of the same size as these, and they have no cover on them, so maybe water dropletts getting on the floor will not happen. Evaporation would be high though, and this might be reason enough to consider a clear cover.
Cleaning could (apparently) be done by having a removeable screen or porous sheet, just like a regular scrubber has. It would be big though, and would drip as you took it out. Also it probably would not fit into a sink, and so would need a bathtub or shower (or outside) for cleaning. A possible fix for this might be a very flexibe woven plastic mesh, which you could fold up like a towell and easily clean in a sink. A material like this might not lay down flat when it's in the scrubber, however.
This type of scrubber would be easiest to try for somebody with a cement floor, lots of wall space, open widows or skylights, a low sump, high ceilings, and a big sink or patio for cleaning. I have no idea of the size required for the unit.

Any of you guys use the Red Sea Marine Lab test kit?
I got one, and testing my parameters for the last three weeks (since doing aqua scaping) I have been struggling with my ammonia at between 0 and 0.25, say 0.12, this evening I thought that the ammonia should have broken down long time ago, so I got NSW that I collected today to carry on with the skimmer trials, and when I tested the NSW it was also between 0 and 0.25.
Imo obviously a useless test kit, but have any of you guys also got a one of these test kits? I was thinking if I maybe double or triple all the quantities of each for further accuracy.
I think the nitrites was fine, which surely if there was ammonia, the nitrites would follow surely, which was not the case.
-
Hello all, does anyone know where i can get lights like this.

either a T5 or a T8 size perhaps?
-
Well well I'm finally starting my very own thread about my Nano. I bought the system about three weeks ago, but it has been running since April 2010.
Some information about the setup:
HARDWARE:
- Tank & Stand - Boyu TL-550
- Lighting - (Stock Lighting) PL24W x 2
- Filtration - Using the standard filter materials. Have added filter wool to the first chamber.
- Circulation - Seio M820 (3400lph)
- Heater - Standard Boyu heater, but it short circuits and has been off since I got the tank. Water temp stays at 25.5'C - 26'C (Probably the Seio)
- UV Light
- Protein skimmer
UPRGRADES ON WISHLIST:
- Add a sump/refugium under the tank. To increase water volume and improve filtration.
- Lighting - Not so sure if I need to change this right now. I'll probably change my 4ft FW to a mixed reef setup within a few months, knowing myself
- Filtration - Would like to replace all the standard filter stuff with more efficient materials or LR rubble - still need to get some good advice on this.
LIVESTOCK:
2 x Blue/Green Chromis
1 x Fire Goby
1 x Cleaner Shrimp
2 x Turbo Snails
2 x Hermit Crabs (Left Handed Hermits, I think)
1 x "Bali" Pincushion Urchin
In/On LR: Amphipods, Bristleworm, Unidentified small crab, Spagetti/Hair worm, tube/fan worms and possibly much more!
I still need a few nice pieces of LR and would like to eventually start keeping a few "beginners" corals.
MAIN PROBLEMS TO DATE:
- GHA - It does become a nuisance, but I'm sure it will go away in time as the system matures. For now I manually remove clumps of it every week or so. The recent addition of the Hermits has really helped - you can clearly see little patches they've cleaned.
- Nitrites & Nitrates - These were too high for the first two weeks or so that I had the tank. Nitrites are down to 0 and Nitrates are at 20. Hopefully a few more water changes will sort this one out.

Hi all
My tank is currently cycling with the live rock and it's been four weeks. Can't say that it's all been easy - staring at the green hair algae is enough to drive anyone insane :D But anyway, patience is key.
I'm going to wait another four weeks before I introduce anything into the tank, but I just wanted to know what would be a good selection to start. The LFS has suggested some blue chromis but I'm not too certain about doing that as I read that they are schooling fish and you should keep at least six of them.
My tank is about 250L and I really want to stock lightly but varied. Any suggestions as to what I can start off with?
Thanks.
B.
PS. I have this really pretty cluster of something, the whole mass cannot be bigger than a 1cm across. Any ideas what it is?
-
Okay so since i've been having all sorts of fun with my tank eg. Endless Nightmare!!! Not with livestock but mainly with algae i decided to post my Parameters i measured tonght with my test kit.
One thing... My test kit is a little old ( I know what you going to say.... I'm not goint to trust it ) But its been giving me decent results so far.
Ammonia : 0.1mg/l
Nirtite : 0.02 mg/l
Nitrate : 10 mg/l
PH: 8.2
Alk : 7 dKh
So i know where my problem is i think...
But where do i find the source?
Suggestions?

Hi there
We are Braam And Cornelia, married for 5 months, and really enjoying planning our tank!
We're busy building our first tank: 180x60x60. We've bought all of the equipment ordered the glass and have been searching the internet non-stop for advice and tips. We're planning to start setting everything up in the next two weeks.
I originally started buying everything for him as a super B-day surprise (only end October) but he figured it out (somehow?) About a week ago, now we're both so psyched we're fast forwarding it a bit and we'll probably be able to by our first fish near his birthday! Yay!
We still have a few questions, seeing as this is a forum I'm going to jump right in and post them here, so if anyone can give us some advise we'll greatly apreciate it, thanks in advance :)
- where can we find good, real live rock. And how do we know the difference? I've only found one shop in town selling it, but frankly to me it looks like old washed out, dry pieces of sand someone picked up on abeach and is pocketing at R150/kg. How would I know if it's good qaulity, or where in the area or guateng can we buy good stock from?
- again on live rock, how do we cure it? And how much do we need? 550l tank
- how much corral sand do we need?
- how long after we've stabalised the water levels can we introduce fish?
- does each fish need to be qaurentined even if they're from the same shop? And how? And for how long?
- how long untill we can introduce anemones? And Qaurentine?
Ooh I can't wait, but putting all my questions black on white is a bit unnerving.
Thanks for everything, can't wait to start posting pics.
Cornelia

i would just like to endorse oceanson's service.
i like to try out new suppliers of livestock from time to time and can say alot of the times the service is poor or the dudes are not keen to ship small orders etc etc.
i called oceanson about 2 weeks ago and introduced myself,
trev and i seemed to get along so i decided to give it a go and place a order as a friend of mine who just started a tank was keen on a clean up crew.
i decided to beef up the order a little to make it worth while and took all his stock of turbo snails and hermits aswell as a few sea hares etc etc.
i had good feed back the whole time after my order was placed and recieved the stuff today.
the stock was all in great condition and a good effort was made to package everything the right way.
im pleased to say i look forward to recieving my chevron.
well done to trev and the team:thumbup:

we thought we would expand the reefers knowledge of what to look for in future when purchasing a r.o.unit as there has been alot of fowl play in the trade.
well we all know that the best reverse osmosis membranes on the planet are filmtec!
and it was inevitable that people would try to copy them.
the truth is many have and all failed.
there are a few other brands that have a good reputation but none as strong as filmtec for its economical, robust, efficiant performance with maximum results.
so then came along those who realised they could rob the end user ands make a quick buck by simply pulling off the sticker on the film casing of any budget membrane and replace it with a filmtec membrane sticker that could be made at any digital printer.
i heard this story from the filmtec agent about a year ago but never thought anything of it as this was all occuring overseas......well that is until 4 months ago
when we noticed some of our clients telling us they had been offered some r.o.units with filmtec membranes for ridiculous prices.
i called the filmtec agent who confirmed it was possible that a few water purification importers had bought these membranes (some knowing and others without knowing) and have pushed them through in there machines.
we began to investigate and boy did we find a rat.
it became so bad that we had people sending there units (which were not even ours....to us for inspection and repair) costing them even more money.
anyway filmtec have since begun to take care of the matter and therefore you will notice that from now on there membranes look like picture no.2
they have changed there label and added hologram writing and logos, aswell as encrypted codes with batch numbers etc etc aswell as standard bar codes.
further more if you read the label, you can see a formal warning to those trying to copy the label.
so make sure when purchasing you get membranes that look like picture 2 ond not like picture 1
so bottom line ......if you in the market for a r.o.unit and you think you getting a good deal.......ensure the following.
1) your supplier issues you with a membrane that looks like picture no.2
2) ask the supplier for his certificate of approval from filmtec as proof that they are certified filmtec dealers and thus the membranes are authentic as seen in picture no 3
3) if supplier issues with a membrane that looks like no 1 ask for a dealer certificate, if they cant issue you with one.....simply walk away
i feel like isabel jones here.......lol....well at least you guys , the end user have learned something new today and have the power to stop some con artist from stealing your money and potentialy harming your marine eco-system.....
cool

picture 2 - new membrane

2 months ago, one of my customers rang me up and told me he was moving and was throwing away his cube.
nothing special, wood cabinet sump, tank and 250watt mh pendant.
i must admit im really impressed with the spectrum of light dispersed by the reeftek 250watt , 14000k single ended globes.
i thought to myself, well im going to set up a new tank really soon, so i may aswell pick this up, set it up outside and use it to house the inmates that i will be stocking my main system with....
so i set it up and began staright away to run the np pellets with the system to test em aswell.
set up the tank with synthetic salt, liverock and sump with a few pieces live rock and skimmer and np pellets.
tank was up and down for weeks with algae and cloudy water, but not once did i loose a piece of livestock.......from last week it cleared up dramatically.....
thought id show you some pics:thumbup:
jaw fish enjoying the mixed substrate
np pellets
left r.o.unit on to long so water level went up in the sump, causing skimmer to skim to wet...lol...at leat you can see it was skimming awesome when it skimmed dry...lol
cool

Help me ID this thing please.. Is it a flatworm or a green slug? should i remove it?
Here's the head

I was in Gauteng a week or two ago and I feel I have to say something about the service I encountered. The service at some shops was more than excellent but at some of them it was shockingly disappointing and in some cases there was no service.
The intention of this thread is not to throw mud or about creating heroes, I would like to reinforce the fact that all customers are important for your business. I agree any businessman will rather pay more attention to his his bigger customers but on the other hand: Any person that enters your shop is a potential customer or even more importantly - a potential big or loyal customer.
Should all customers not for this same reason receive your undivided attention? Surely your e mail will still be available when the shop is empty and if it is empty is it not the result of no attention?
At one particular outlet I went after an shop assistant to get some product info and the way he answered me made me wonder if I had not mistakenly ask the president of this country for marine product advice! I left and went to the shop where I always get a lot of good advice, attention and where my questions are responded to.
No wonder the shop where I got the very good service seemed to be much busier and better stocked. By the way our local LFS who is famous for saying if you do not buy everything from him and do as he says he will not help you has closed his doors a week or two ago.:wave2:

Hi Guys
Does anybody know how the reef tank at the pearls in umhlanga broke.
I saw it a few weeks ago and it was a huge bowfront tank with some lovely livestock.
On my walk along the promenade yesterday i saw the area cordoned with barrier tape and a huge section of glass lying nearby. I hope they managed to save the livestock?

Hi All
It seems all the reading and I still feel unempowered. I have some questions and once again thank all of you for your help.
- I have the marine bug and am planning a second tank and therefore do not want to modify my current Boyu too much or none at all. Please advise on based on the standard setup what type of Corals (SPS and LPS) as well as numbers of CuCs and fish I should stock. I would prefer a well balanced co-operative reef which is not overstocked and would rather lean on the conservative end.
- Should I purchase or build the tank myself, and if so are their standardised designs for main tank and sumps that are proven and easily maintained.
- If I were to purchase where is the most reasonable and what size would is recommended.

hey guys .
Just need some advice on the following :whistling:
I am getting a 650lx500x500 tank in 6mm glass for R700. It comes with the stand and 4 x 24w T5's. I am looking to add a sump. I wont be keeping any difficults corals for now, but if i would like to keep say sps will change the lighting later on.
Now the questions :
1. Is this a good buy for the price.
2. Will it be easy to add a sump since its 6mm.
3. Should i add an extra sheet to the base to make it stronger.
Thanks
ps: All advice welcome, that includes if you have something to sell.
-
Well it has begun:thumbup:
I am taking out my substrate and replacing it with aragonite (white). Obviously this means that the reef comes out. Hectic job!
I am upgrading my skimmer to a Reefocto 150
I am making my DSB larger.
I am lowering my MH's about 20cm, about 20cm from the water surface.
I have buckets, rocks, containers, mess etc, everywhere.
Fish are in a temp container with powerhead and live rock.
Not a great way to spend a sunday evening!!! :yeahdude:

Hey guys,
I am looking for ideas for a new sump, how about a thread with pics of sumps....

I've built a seperate room so that i can move my DSB from under my DT. There will be two 1000mm x 300mm x 350mm tanks one above each other. Overflow from DT to top tank with T3 skimmer, DSB and ATS above, overflow to lower tank with DSB and pumped back to DT. Now the question, can i transfer my old DSB sand to the other two new DSB's or would it be better to let it cycle threw the old one as well untill the cycle is complete then remove the old DSB.

I need some input/explanation here please.
I finally connected my battery backup and tested it to see how long it will keep my return pump running.
This is what I have. 145W return pump, 102AH deep cycle battery with built in state of charge indicator Green for 70% and up, black when less than 70%, new and fully charged. Inverter is pure sine with an efficiency of 86%. 3 stage charger.
So according to my calculations the pump will draw 14.05A from the battery. (145W/0.86%)/12V
For a full discharge of the battery it would be 102AH/14.05A = 7.25 Hours or 7hours:15mins.
I monitored the battery voltage throughout the entire time (I know it is not an accurate estimate of state of charge) to see where it is. The battery started off at 12.4/12.5V. After 7 hours of running the pump the voltage was down to 11.9V and the state of charge indicator was still green! How can this be? I thought that the state of charge indicator is not working as it should. So I switched the pump back to mains and let the battery recharge. I expected it to recharge for around 16-24hours as it should have been close to dead according to my calculations. Yet after 6.5hours, the battery charger indicated that it was in float charging mode.
So was my calculation on running time incorrect? Is my pump drawing that much less power? Or do I have a super battery?

Hi Guys,
I been away from the forum for a while now (studying, work, travelling etc).
I installed a sump on my Boyu TL550 in March / April this year and basically just put a whole lot of play sand in as a DSB with a bit of live rock from my display tank.
Yesterday, I was changing the light bulbs on the ATS, when I noticed that the sand on the DSB was alive with movement.
Closer inspection revealed hundreds of tiny brittle starfish. They are about 2mm in diameter and white in colour.
I had some baby brittle stars about a year back but none survived. I think the Harley got them all.
I have a huge brittle star in my display tank (body is the size of a R5 coin) and a few small ones which hang out in a small piece of live rock. The large one loves to chow pieces of hake, which I feed to my Harley. The Harley should actually eat the starfish, but he/she seems to be intimidated by it.
I have added nothing to my tank since March this year, so I have no clue as to where there little guys came from, unless they are breeding in my tank ? There are no babies in the main tank at all.
What are the chances they will survive to adulthood in a tank? Do they need any special diets?
Thanks

Friend of mine's pin cushion has started to erode at its base. Big gaping hole at the coral's trunk that has continued to grow with time. He pulled it out a few day's ago, and also noticed spots of rot under the main cap/head.
What would cause this? Some kind of bacterial attack?
So anyway last night he and myself cut this coral up into little pieces, removing all the rotting material and creating what we hope are 6 healthy frags. Never done this before, felt very alien cutting up a living organism (well the few prostitutes excluded:whistling:)
Elastic banded them (light tension) onto pieces of rock and placed them in my frag tank. Lets see if they grow.
In hindsight, will my generosity come back and bite me? Could this infection spread to my healthy pincushions in my main DT? I do run a 55W UV sterilizer for what its worth.

I will be looking after a construction project in the Natal Midlands for the next 5-6 months, and will be based near Nottingham Road. Although I will be commuting to Bloemfontein whenever I get the chance, that will not be all that often, and I will have to spend some weekends at my new place. My long suffering wife will stay in Bloem to look after my tank, and the cats, and the dogs, and the kids, and the garden, and...
So, this gives me a good opportunity to meet some of you KZN fellows, perhaps attend one or two of your meetings, do some fishing (who's inviting ???), perhaps join you guys on a collection trip, and just generally get to know the Last Outpost of the British Empire a bit better.

Well, due to circumstances I broke down my PlayStation 3 system.
PlayStation 3 - Page 9 - Marine Aquariums of South Africa
Anyway, I set up my old 1.2 tank.

It is a standard Daro 1.2m product. I used another standard 90L Daro tank as a sump.
I changed the stand, cut the center bottom vertical brace out and moved it to the back. Also welded the small triangular supports in to prevent flexing. And had the stand powdercoated.
Tank got bottom drilled, and I fit a slim line al la Idol Marine style overflow box 100mm wide.
Sump, added two baffles, one shorter by 10mm.

Hi Guys,
What is ample lighting for cheato, I currently have a good size ball, but have 3x34wT8's lighting it, it is happy under there, but I want to get rid of the tubes that are so long just for the ball of cheato, I was thinking something like those energy saving lamp's, a bedside lamp etc say in 100w, something small and simple with a plug in and play..............any ideas

Hi
Last 2 weeks I am getting red colour algea so dont have Idea is it good sign or bad All water PMTR are normal
here is the pic

I've been thinking since I hooked my return up to the inverter. Would it be ok to run the return for 30mins and then off for 30mins. The return is about 3000LPH after headloss and total volume is 600L. Very low bioload, only a few corals.
With this on-off routine you can effectively double the backup time. And 3000LPH for 30mins means a total turnover of 2.5X during on time. If we could leave it on for shorter or off for longer then you get even more time out of the battery.
Any thoughts on this?

Hi didnt see this hairy Pom pom on google, came out of kenyan liverock anybody know it ?
And will it take another piece of my GBTA if i put it back ?
-
:wtf:
So ...
For the last 4 days my BTA has been on the move, thaey do that so i thourght nothing of it.
This morning my wife and daughter tels me the anenamy doesnt look well, i get out of bed and see a piece of the BTA in the liverock hole in one of the liverock pieces.
I inspected the holes in the rock and eventuly pried this crab out !
Now i know what your thinking, this crab shouldnt make be a prob, i almost never saw him in my system.
There are about 12 x 1 inch holes in this rock, so i turned it over ( and over )and found the piece of BTA that was missing of the anamone that morning.
After about a hour i got it out!
Note it has tenticles and foot in nice proportion.
Looked further and saw the last piece of the puzzle.
His a awsome looking little guy, and i think he wanted to cut this piece of the anamone to keep as protection.
I dont know if the pom poms on his front claws are alive or his own body parts , but the anamone seems much better now, i hope that this hapens in nature and the small anamone will grow again as well.
This is very new to me and if you all have a similer experience or know what going to hapen , pls let me know.
N.B
I havnt put them back yet... SHOULD I ?????????
Just to confuse me more.
( wife just told me she saw the dark grab under the anamone last night ! Could he have damaged the BTA and the pom pom stolen it away from him )

Hey guys,
I have been made an offer to buy a ReefOctopus Calcium Reactor.
Good idea. Yes/No?
Currently my tank has mainly fish. I previously had a large variety of different corals and then my system crashed and I lost all but 3 coral. I am thinking of starting to restock.
Is a calcium reactor a good idea? If so why and what is the advantage?
Thanks.

Hi All
I have had my tank cycling for two weeks and attached below are some of the photos and a my first water sampling.
I have had a brown algae on my substrate and live rock, however as you can see my NH4, NO2 and NO3 levels are high. I have done a partial water change to help with algae, NH4, NO2 & NO3 and also added some more live rock.
Please any advice in reducing these levels. Also please could someone help on the 1) I still have the original bio balls and should I remove these and replace with what ? and 2) the lighting that comes standard on the TL550 is it T5 or not. Please advise on how sufficient and what type of hard and soft corals would be suitable.
Apologies I do not know how to add in line phtos and their max size and dimensions so I have attached in pdf document. Apologies for the incovenience and all your assistance is much appreciated.

Hi Guys, Please help!
I have just noticed a white chalky substance growing on the live rock and base rock in my newly setup tank. It is a 130 liter tank and has been going now for just 3 weeks. Still in the cycling process. The live rock had lots of purple growth and even a few fan worms growing all over. Suddenly (it appeared within a few hours) we notice a pure white chalky growth/film on the live rock and even on the base rock. The tank is not milky. The temp is 26 degrees and the Ammonia levels were 0.5 after 1 week and are now 0.1 after 3 weeks. The SG is 1.025. The PH is 8.3. Is this chalky substance normal during the cycling process.
What to do?:(

Hey guys I bought a saga controller yesterday and I have a problem to calibrate it.I think the orp probe might be faulty,it just indicates a error when ever I select the calibration icon.
It also shows a probe icon on the left of the screen with a cross through it.
Can you guys please give me some advise.
-
Good morning all,
Should i invest in 1 Tunze wavebox or the 6105 kit with the two pumps and controller on my 1.6x70x80?
-
I thought I would test this skimmer, play with all the water levels and get a feel for it before I put it in my DT. I would really of liked a shoot out with differant skimmers, drip skimmate and see which sucks the most;)
Herewith pix and tests so far
out the box
hows this for a pump
I put about 70l in a 3 foot tank, check the water level. On this water level, I did let it run, then would switch of the pump, did this a few times and there was no draw back from the out flow being between 20-50mm under. I did evn have the water level right up to half way up the neck, and still no flooding back when it restarts.
check the bubble formation in the cone, they so small you can't see them.
This is still NSW, check the gunk on top already
Now the fun starts, I went to the skimmer I got in the DT, I have been skimming wet and had about 1.5l's skimate, I thought I would pour it in a imagine in an hour it would skim it out.........well.....in seconds it just went mental, the top of the bubble column was just above the cone into the chamber............as I poured in the skimate in the BB just went mental.....obviously this is in more confined circumstances, but I at least thought it would take 15-30 mins let alone an hour
so now I collected the skim mate when it calmed down and had settled a bit, poured the skimate into a 2L to measure it.
While I was pouring the skim mate in, the skimmer just went mental.......absolute baboon, before I had finished pouring the 2L in, it was already gushing out the over flow hole (and this is after when the skimmer had settled again)

Hi guys,
So this is my thought. Looking at trying to get a school of tangs. I am thinking of a mix Regal Tang & Yellow Bellied Regal Tang, mix of Nasso Tang & Blonde Nasso Tang, Powder Blue and Powder Brown Tangs.
Numbers I am thinking 11, 7, 5, and 3.
How many of each? How do you add them?
Different sizes and if so which ones which sizes?
Thanks for the help.

Hi guys.
I saw the name, tried to google it , but does anyone know another name for a "Oriole":confused1:
Apparently comes from phillapines
-
Has anyone ever tried using this as a calcium amd magnesium additive? As I understand its a carbonate wich would help buffer the ph aswell. Might be wrong. Also it occurs naturally so can it be that bad? Would there be a build up of some sort after a while of use?

Hi people
How long is my husband going to stare to the almost empty tank before ANYTHING starts growing?? He notices every microscopic thingy that can possibly be alive with tentacles and moving - or not. Can I buy him a rock with a polyp or something on just so that he can stare at something?
We only added live rock about 5 days ago!

I'm a bit confused, is there any difference between a fresh water and saltwater pump. I was at a LFS to buy a pump and the person who helped me said that the spesific pump is saltwater ready, i asked him to explain but he couldn't tell me. Has it got something to do with the shaft or casing. I know the pumps i use has ceramic impellers but besides that is there something else i'm missing.

I'm busy setting up my tank. At the moment I have decided on a DSB for my sump. Will be approx 25cm long x 30cm wide x 17cm deep.
My question is: Should I have a DSB (10cm) in my display tank (120cm(l)x45cm(w)x55cm(h) as well? Or should I stick to 2cm playsand as substrate?
I'd appreciate some good advice. Thanks.

Hi
Please ID these 2 things growing on my starpolop.
The one on the left hates lights and even a flash of the camera sent it back into the rock.
I spotted this after I moved the coral. It was growing onto another rock so I decided to move it and let it spread... Then I saw this...
I'm clueless - pleez help.
Thanks

What is Biorock as is loosely used in our hobby? Many LFS sell a ceramic, cement or plastic based creation reportedly the best thing since bubblegum. They call it Bio -rock or Biorock, chose which ever blows your hair back. In reality one may as well use ceramic rings or :) "bio balls". They will perform the same job wont they?
The term Biorock IMO was cottoned onto by some marketing guys that used the term which is very convincing to the uninformed. Unfortunately it is the newbie.
Here is a wiki of Biorock. Hmmm... interesting.....

Hi guys and gals
I'm new in the marine arena. I surfed the web for months before starting and I hope I have got most of it covered in my new tank. I set it up about 2 months ago. Its a standard 2 foot tank with canopy. Got 2 small internal filters(280l/h and 300l/h) in and a resun in tank skimmer. Also the heater and airpump with the airstone etc. Started off by adding some 2kg of liverock and used Prodac marine salt. Got my salt and everything up to 1.024. Started to cycle my tank for a month and adding liverock as I got some new pieces. After 2 weeks my amonia droped to 0. After 3weeks I added 2 hermit crabs and after a month i added 2 percula clowns (small). And last week I recieved a frag of blastomussa and a piece of torch coral with 3 heads. So a upgrade in lighting was needed. I bought a super bright 18w flurecent of about 6500kelvin and 2 6500kelvin 14w energysavers and a 14w actinic coral light. Everything looks happy and healhty at this stage. The toches are extending fully and the mussa is lookinf nice and plump with bright red and the green mouth. Don't have test kits yet but did test my water at a petshop and the nitrates were under 0.2. Got the brown algae/diatoms now for about a week and a half but is slowly making place for green algae. Some hair algae is appearing but nothing major. What do you guys think? Small I know but its the best I can do for now. Will upgrade in the future. Oh and I'm using distilled water for chages and topups as I'm still trying to find out whre to get RO water at a good price in bulk
-
Hey guys,
I recently purchased a second hand fish tank, scored the live rock as well as the water. I have been cycling the tank now just under 4 weeks and have noticed something cleared some sand away from beneath a rock. I spied on the tank using a red light (Infrared) and it seems I have a small mantis shrimp. It seems very small, and I dont think it will get much bigger than what it is now, as the guy I bought the tank from, has had the tank for 2 years already. I mentioned to him what I found, and he was not aware.
Do you think this is something to worry about? I have a snail as well, which seemed to catch a ride with the rock and is still going fine.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Justin

The clown trigger which was introduced to my display tank on the weekend after a 21 day quarantine period has started acting up. At feeding time it eats a little(maybe 25% of it's usual fill), then starts twitching, jerking, swimming erratically and going into spasms, as if something's eating it from the inside. It's quite disturbing to watch. Are these flukes or some kind of parasite in the fish? Any ideas what it could be and how I can treat it?
-
Hi All
Just started with my marine tank about 6 to 7 weeks ago.
Its a little pico tank which holds about 40 liters of water.
I have had fresh water fish for awhile now and was practically "donated" the complete Jebo R338 with all acc's for R150. Thought it was time i started a salt water tank and here i am.
The tank has been cycling for the 7 weeks with really nice cured live rock. Also to boost bacteria i used Seachem Stability and a Purigen filter for the ammonia/nitrates,etc.
Life in the tank seems to be good from day 1....lots of bristle worms(2 over 1 inch big), and some rock life...microscopic feather dusters to me and a few tube worms.
The rock came with Sundial snail aswell which has survived thus far aswell.
About 1,5 weeks ago,the wife got me a yellow tail blue damsel, as she thought it was mad of me coming home everyday for the last month too look at my rocks...so now i have a fish aswell to look at. Fish is eating well and so far no signs of stress.
I intend to create a mini reef tank.
I have modded my tank and installed a 10W Aim Marine Blue moon light in addition to the 2 daylight CFL's. This was done for the coral growth.
So far so good.
Will take some water to Jungle Aquatics tomorrow to test it and see if i can start putting in some soft coral.
Well thats me.
Thanks

Hi guys, nice forum going on here, Im Gerard...
I have found marine tank to be my new hobby, but Im a little bit stuck with a problem...
I knew nothing about marine tanks, so I wanted to build my own one, I went shpping for a filter, so I learned about protein skimmers, so the guy sold me a hang on Via Aqua Multi skimmer, so I went and designed my tank to use this filter, and Ordered my glass, and build it, left it for a month to dry, and then I went and bought R1500 crushed coral, bio rock, testers, and salt, mixed the salt, and let the tank circulate for 4 weeks, then on saturday I went and bought 3 Stemps, and 3Clownfish, my Nitrate tested 0 and PH 8.0, and salt 0.020 - 0.022...
No one clownfish didnt want to eat, he died last night, tested my water and Nitrate is 1.0g/L so now Im woried that the filter/skimmer is not doing hisjob right...
have anyone here have experience on this skimmer, or a solution to my problem?
oh and is there a place where marine stuff is cheaper here in GP...dam its and expensive hobby, I've got a Fiesta ST and it overtakes my car by far...hahaha...
-
Got me these for the car. Incredible lights.
Now my question for the light gurus out there. Can this not be used for Reef tank Lighting???
Oh, just found out someone else also had this topic going on another thread:
Will a Car HID Xenon Light Work on a reef Tank - Marine Aquariums of South Africa
But I see that there is no real answer yet. Surely it must work.
I love the fact that it works of 12V, and the wattage is way low.
And for the cost of 02 it is about R850.00, including the Ballasts.
That means that you can run quite a few of these and it'll still be
cheaper than Metal Halides as well as helping out wrt
Load shedding, meaning, you can run this of 12Volt or 16Volt.
Come guys and gals, help us get to a conclusion here- and no, I am not buying 8 plus just to test the par etc. Where's the clever guys??
-
I am going to be needing about 25kg of LR for my new tank that is hopefully arriving at the end of the week. If anyone has any nice pieces please PM me

I have a 20L Glass Fishbowl that I used to keep a Betta in years ago that i'm hoping to house some non light loving small softies, some shroom's, some rics and maybe a hermit. I had a few ideas for the lighting but the simplest and most elegant seemed to be one of those old school desk lamps running either a 8000k CFL or a LED E27 from
Genral Lamp. I'll see how the livestock fairs with the CFL 1st though.
The bowl is going to have a small internal sump with a 600lph (should cycle the bowl 24 times an hour) pump doing the work and I have a small 50w heater to do the heating. The sump will have 2 compartments, 1st compartments will hold the filter media, some sponge and filter floss, 2nd compartment will hold the pump, the heater and some purigen.
This sketch is more or less to scale but this kinda build is going to need a bit of tinkering and fiddling, the sump area as I said will be split into 2 and the "inlet" will just be a simple toothless lowered lip, i'm just being lazy when it comes to sketch :P
Here's everything cleaned up and i've now started working on the template for the internal sump. I'll see how the plastic container works 1st as a sump but i'm toying with getting the sump made from black or clear perspex. It'll just look that much slicker.
I don't really want to go the external sump route firstly because I just don't want to :) and secondly because the glass on this is helluva thin so I either risk cracking it while drilling or cracking it later once the inlet and outlet are running through.
I'll keep you updated as I go :)

Hey Folks,
There I was browsing RC, and MAAST (my local MASA equivalent) and I came across a cross posting from here, and low and behold, marine folks in South Africa! I'm an Ex-Cape Town boy living in texas (for the last 2 years, and before that 18 months in london), and have recently-ish (last year or so) taken to marine aquariums... I'm actually in the process of putting up my second one.
My current tank is a (had to convert down from Gallons...) a 210L tub (brick, pretty much) with around 45KG of LR, and a selection of livestock... My new tank which is actually being built right now in the garage is a 500L custom aquarium. When we move to the next house, I'll probably go to the 750L+ range... It's just hard to get that into a rental house.
Here's the most recent pic I can find online, it's rather old though... like from day 1... I'll see if I can add some more in a few hours :)
-
Hi guys, I have been thinking about this for quite some time and after meeting a local chap passionate about SA & supporting local products I started thinking a bit more and would like to pose the question.
If you had the option of buying locally manufactured products (lets say your "nice to have's ie controllers , probes , chillers etc etc). Would you ?
If you dont mind elaborating on your answer that would also be cool.
I would personally love to rather support local if the price is competitive enough and backup is available

I had a 55 gal. & a 20L back in the early 90's & enjoyed it tremendously! I've wanted to get back into this ever since I had to give them up!
I recently bought a used 65 gal. 24" x 36" reef set up with a BLAAAAAAAAAAAAACK ( Yawn! )painted OAK cabinet ( OMG!:nono:) :banghead: - top & base. I'm starting out by creatively adding some class to it! I'm sanding all vertical flat surfaces, leaving the black on the shaped & horizontal ones. I'm refinishing the beautiful Oak I'm finding underneath, in Cabernet colored ( a reddish warm tone) Varithane stain. I think it's gonna be gorgeous! Since I intend to set the tank as a room divider between my living / dining areas ( 11ft x 18ft. total space ) , I'm going to do a bit more creative carpentry to cover the open "side" which would otherwise be the back of the cabinet. This will allow me better access to the sump & additional refugium /algae filter I'll be adding. I'll build an extra shelf for the refugium. A question here!- does it matter what I use for a refugium? Wouldn't a "Tupperware" tub work just fine if I want? I'm going to mount fluorescent tube fixtures above it, to the inner underside of the tank platform within the cabinet.
I've figured out a way to get creative with the water flow , too! I'm going to plumb my live rock support structure PVC to my return line & put "T"s where I want outlet nozzles. By building my live rock on top of the structure & creating caves & shelves, it will be hidden & very "real ocean" like ! I have a large powerhead as well. I want to set up a surge / wave effect. I figure I can arrange that in the return line & plumb pvc to either end of the tank with the wave unit alternating the ebb & flow. By putting the strongest surges under rock shelves, I c an have softies that prefer gentler currents , above the selves & create stratified zones in the inhabitants. The shelves will also shade some areas for corals that prefer darker regions.
The construction plan also includes another little creative feature. I'm planning to build a small light box "pan" to sit under the tank , such that the light boxes extend a few inches beyond the base of the tank so that I have BLUE LIGHTS / LED's as moonlights for my corals! Wired in concert with a timer & the top lights , I'll have full cycle /full spectrum lighting!
I have a scavenged light fixture that has 4 swiveling track light type canisters mounted to a base. I'm thinking that if I remove the base & mount the individual lights in my cabinet top & use full spectrum screw in 100 w fluorescent bulbs in each one, along with my regular top lighting fixture, I'll have some pretty decent light in the top. Can anyone ( pardon the pun) enlighten me on the spectrum of the bulbs? I have 2 of them in my ceiling fixture in my Art Studio ( I'm a Wildlife Artist, working in Pastel) and 2 more in lamps. I love them! They appear rather blue! I'm wondering if that might just be perfect for some of my Corals? It's certainly cheap! The base of the bulb says "Aero-Tech" 5000K FS58 - 25W ( 100 W equivalent in an incandescent ) . I guess individually, they are short of the 6,500K - 10,000 K spectrum preferred for Reef tanks, but does that 5,000K multiply as I add bulbs? In other words, wouldn't the 4 5,000K bulbs add up to 20,000K ? . . . Or is that just 4 5,000K lights ? I also thought about checking out halogens. They're really HOT though. I watched that video on the Plasma light! Very impressive! But I'm betting it has a price to match! What is the spectrum of LEDs? I don't think they are very intense!
Necessity is the mother of invention & my pocket says I'd better get REAL inventive!
In my filtration plans, I'm going with the Jaubert - Plenum system; adding a sump & a algae refugium - all with as much live rock/sand as I can possibly manage. I intend to propagate amphipods & other small crustaceans as food, along with the algae in the refugium. I've bought a couple pretty good books & I'm trying my best to do my home work. I feel strongly that it's a big responsibility taking the lives of these creatures into MY hands & I take that seriously. Taking on the responsibility of ANY "pet" is often taken far too lightly & on a whim! Disaster most always follows & aside from the financial pain, it's the creatures who entrust us with their care, who get hurt most & often pay OUR price with THEIR lives! I personally consider that irresponsible & unethical! Bad things happen in spite of best intentions. I get that. But if one does the research, they are doing their best to prevent that! Beyond that. . .. "the elevator's BROKE!. . . take the STEPS! " ! Technology advances. It's our responsibility to keep up with it. As far as *I* can see, this doesn't HAVE to be hard, or even expensive, IF you do the homework! . . .Did you take notes? ;):) I am! We'll see how I score!:rockon::y15::party::seeya:

So I bought two Reeftek T5 tubes (54W) over the week end (Need 12 to complete my canopy)
Got the 2 to test the setup... ballasts n all...
I Think I may know why...
But could some1 lend their experience as to why when I got them connected, the lights stay on for like 10 seconds and then switch off... i have to unplug and plug back in to get them on again... then for only another 10 seconds or so.... What did I do wrong? or is something faulty?
Thanks

Well this is the start of my Juwel nano.
120 liters.
Waterproof T - 5 lights.
Machein joined with black silicone.
Resessed canopy for no drip lines.
Built in filter and heater.
SunSun pumps are an extra.
Ok...
So i put about 8 kgs of mature kenyan liverock in and waited about a month before introducing any thing.
Now to go against the flow , i put in my Bubble tip anamone in first. ( in at least 4 of my previous tanks the anamone has gone in first, its the way i do it and it works for me. )
a month after set up - the bubble tip anamone and 2 x cleaners go in.
A month after the anamone - the royal gramma , and a colt tree goes in.( & a zenia frag )
A month later the yellow tang and tube worm goes in.
Up to date this tank hasnt had a water change yet, i have put in Red sea Buff and magnesium , but its definatly time for a change about now.
So this is 3 months old and plenty to go, before its up to Nano standerds that have been posted on this site.
Every thing ive bought so far has come from
Perky Pet and Vet in diep river.

Hi all, I am a complete newbie to this hobby. I bought a boyu TL550 this weekend (After a fit of temporary insanity) and have set it up as far as I could. I currently have no LS in as I understand that the system should first mature. After reading a lot of the comments on this forum I have a couple of questions though. So here goes:
- What would be the best way to set-up the filter at the back? (I want to eventually have a small reef tank)
- Is it ok if I only have lava rock in the beginning while the system matures? When should I add LR or is it not necessary?

Dear friends,
Please could you promote the following to anyone interested in the environment, research, museums and herpetology in particular?
Bayworld will be actively promoting the work that is done here with interesting activities on Sunday 19th September and on the Friday public holiday on 24th September. They will be great opportunities to share the excitement of the Museum with children, grandchildren and friends and to support the Museum. There is a special evening lecture on Monday 20th September. Details will be available in the newspaper closer to the time.
To promote the work done by the herpetologists the following lectures will give participants an insight into some of the field trips undertaken to remote areas in search of new and exciting discoveries.
19th At the Museum.
10.15Experiences of a Herpetologist Presentation by Prof Bill Branch, Herpetologist at the PE Museum, a world leader in the field of reptiles and amphibians. He has published numerous scientific and popular books and articles including his widely used Field guide to snakes and other reptiles of southern Africa. Bring along your copy of his publications for signing by the author.
24th At the Museum.
12.00In Search of Lost Frog Species, illustrated presentation on a Frog Collection Expedition in Hogsback by Werner Conradie.
In the month of September and October Conservation International (a world organization that works to ensure a healthy and productive planet for us all) is sending researchers across the world in an unprecedented search to rediscover species of lost amphibians - animals considered potentially extinct but that may be holding on in a few remote places. It is the ultimate Search for the Lost Frogs. Port Elizabeth Museum Natural Scientist, Werner Conradie, will lead a local team of researchers into the Amotala Mountains in search of the critically endangered Amatola Toad, last seen in 1998. Frogs play a key role in ecosystem and keeps it healthy. Will he be successful in finding this frog? What else will they find? Join us at Bayworld on 24 September at 12:00 noon, for an up to date illustrated report on this exercise and hear about what is happening in the ever shrinking environments of amphibians of the world.
20th - at the Museum a special evening lecture
Public Lecture New Places & New Species by Prof Bill Branch Herpetologist
Finding and naming new species is a Scientist's dream. During the last 10 years, on explorations in the mountains of Mozambique and the rocky deserts of Namibia and Angola, Bill Branch has discovered over 20 new species of snakes, tortoises, chameleons and geckos. He shares the excitement of these discoveries, the new techniques used to identify new species, and the intricacies of naming them.
I hope that you can attend these activities and lectures with your families and friends. Bayworld needs all the support it can get.
Many thanks in anticipation,

hi guys i need some help i have a little aiptasia infestation, i want to try to kill them of using joes juice or aiptasia-X the problem i have is that my Green bubble tip sits on one of the rocks that has monster aiptasia. so the question is will my anemone be in trouble.
-
Man this cracks me up. My poor wife has see her house turn into a small workshop with hose, tool, nets, pvc, silicone, buckets and all manner of goodies.
So gradually her frustration grows and she begins to moan, first to me, then our friends, then our family. Complaining that my stuff is always lying everywhere and the tank takes up so much space. In all fairness it does use up some space.
The thing that cracks me up is every time we go into a LFS she offers to buy a fish or a coral and then subsequently names them.
I think its a case of Men are from Mars and Woman from Venue.

All the New Peeps
Please beware when reading members posts regarding what they are dosing.
one needs to have a full understanding of their system & how it runs.
EG:
1.) Do you run CARX reactor? & does it have MG in it?
2.) Are they running a Kalk Reactor?
these 2 reactors can handle most of the dosing required in fact some systems only use these for all their dosing needs.
There are a few things that one needs to dose depending on your tank & what you keep so please read & find out what you need to keep your tank happy & don't try copy another members dosing as you might not know all they have in reactors.

Hey guys
Bit of a sad story. I (like many other reefers on this forum) have noticed that occasionally my SunSun powerheads run in reverse, which is quite annoying but nothing major... or so I thought.
Normally when feeding I pause the internal flow, which turns back on automatically after 10 mins. Now since noticing this pump reversal phenomenon, I ensure that I don't leave the flow to turn on by itself, I always put it back on manually.
On saturday morning I was in a rush, and so fed as normal, but got distracted by something and then left the house. Now my foxface (who I have only had a week) loves to graze on the algae on the pumps, especially when they're off. Well you can imagine what happened... I got home later that afternoon and noticed the pump was running in reverse :nono: Sorted that out, and then noticed something stuck in the housing... :(
The foxface was obviously having a nibble at the front of the pump when it turned back on, sucking him in... :( what a horrible way to die. I know this is due to my own stupidity which makes it even worse. I had gottednn quite attaced to the little guy, even in the one week.
Anyway just thought I'd share my experience - we live and we learn hey! Needless to say there is now a grill on the front of the powerheads, and as soon as I've got some spare cash I'll be upgrading to something more reliable!
-
hi george can you give me more info on this? like what exactly it does and also how much water the 300ml treats? can it be regenerated? and whats the cost plus shipping

Hi All
I thought I would share some of what one can do with a Profilux & programmable logic
Currently I use these functions on my tank.
1.) Temperature control now that it's getting hotter I am running my tank cooler at night so that the MH don't boil the DT.
How I do this is by creating a Virtual Temperature probe which is a copy of the normal temp prob.
I then tell the Profilux to use each probe at different times of the day/night using programmable logic.
2.) ATO & Kalk Mixing - I don't have a proper Kalk Stirrer my kalk only get's mixed when my ATO come on & this some times is for only a few seconds so it does not really mix well. What I have programmed is that my ATO will be on a Max of 3 minutes & min or 1 minute even if the float switch is off.
this allows the RO pump to mix my kalk so that every time my ATO comes on well mixed Kalk goes into my tank.
3.) Skimmer Delay on - I use this function when I put my tank into feed pause so that the liquid foods do not get skimmed out of my tank.
So the feed pause reactivates the return & other pumps but the skimmer only gets activated only after a set delay time.
these are just some of the little things that can be done to help keep ones parameters constant.

hey guys i have purchased a kenya tree which is not wedged into any platform. I need some advice on ways to secure it on a rock so that after some time it will catch on. Glue? if so which one and how?

Hi fellow Reefers..
Last night my wife hired me a Sunday movie as usual.., well this movie was not that usual as I noticed it was a documentary about dolphin slaughtering in China.
"The Cove"
The Chinese basically chase thousands of dolphins using metal banging noises into the bay then trap them using nets. They are then left there until the next morning where companies all over the world come to buy some of the dolphins for their "Dolphin Show" facilities at $150 000 per dolphin.
Once the companies leave, the Chinese kill the rest. Usually only about 10 dolphins are sold per month. The thousands that are left are brutally killed using sharp sticks!!:cursing::banghead::censored:
The Americans have been trying for years to get photo material of these acts, but are banned from entering these sites.
This was by far the MOST horrifying documentary I’ve seen in my entire live! I literally started crying when you could hear how the dolphins tried fighting for their lifes while being killed. What made this even worse is the fact that the killings was done brutally by letting the dolphins die slowly in their own blood.:dft004::y1::y8:
I decided that we as Dorry Pets will help to do something about this. It looks like "Lions Gate" has sponsored the movie to get the word out and have even removed the copy protection on the DVD's. I have copied this movie and will be handing these out to our clients to help get the message out there about what the Chinese are doing to the MOST intelligent creatures on our planet!
Please go and rent this movie from your local video store and get the message out there. It seems that the IWC are all talk and no action!!!!:y14::035:
For those of you that have seen this movie, please share your thought about what we can do as fellow reefers???

Hi guys
I have a new Fox Face Tang with what looks like white spot. I got the tang on Friday (3 days ago) and took about 45 - 50 minutes accimatising him like I do all my livestock. Yesterday I had a heat issue in the tank and the temp got to 29.5 degrees. I managed to get the temp down to 26 by this am and everything else looks nice and happy again. However the Fox Face has these black and white spots. Can anyone help identify the problem and suggest solutions. I really don't want to loose this guy.
Thanks a bunch.
Nico

While feeding my tank today I noticed one of my peppermint shrimp is carrying eggs. I don't intend to raise these but may in the future.

Hi Guys, I thought I post quicky the first pictures of my 2nd built.
This bubbleblaster 3000 pump is really worth the money.
The outlet from the bubbleblaster goes into the chamber 30cm above the bottom.
Total height including neck is almost 1m and the pump fills every ml with air. Unbelievable result for just 35 watts. I should have put the pump outlet 5 to 10 cm higher as there is almost no clear water at the bottom of the skimmer.
After switching the pump off, the water level drops a few cm below the collection cup.

I think it is time to start a thread for my cube.
I need to start off by giving thanks, credit and gratitude to Frans, for helping me on this project! Your advice and friendliness means the world to me!!!!
Equipment so far:
DT: will be 900 x 900 x 600
Skimmer: Reef Octupus NW 150
Circulation: Boyu WM-3
Heater: Jager 300
Lights: T5
The sump will host a nice DSB
LR: 21kg's
Frans will be delivering the tank, stand a sump this week! Super excited!!
I went to Melkbos strand yesterday and collected 100L of water to keep my LR happy! At the moment I'm hosting the LR in a 110L container with my Boyu wave makers and heater.
The tank started out as a predator tank containing Lionfish. My wife and I found out 8 weeks ago that we are expecting our first child. So no, Nemo's and Dorries are in the mix. So 1 Lion and some big clowns will be swimming in the tank!
Now for some pics:
Skimmer:
LR:
Will post pics of the tank the minute I receive it!
Cheers,

Here is my experience of this anemone.

This was the day when I introduce the nennie to my tank.
Day time:

During day time this anemone seems harmless. I saw on several occations fish touching it with no after effects. The whole stem with the mouth is drawn back inside the body.
Night time:
This is where the fun starts.

The stem and disc is out (Feeding Mode)

The tentacles is longer and in the open.
I feed the nennie every night. The stem and disc only comes out at night. I feed it krill or stint. It has the same reaction as any nennie, the long thin tentacles pull the food to the mouth. The reddish part of the body does not transport the food to the mouth. I think that part of the body is to draw the prey to the tentacles. There is little white balls that might be seen as fish eggs.
Once it has taken the food, it draws the dics back inside the body.
Observations:
During day time, the body is big about 100mm to 150mm in diameter and a disc shape. During night time, the body is around half the size and more off a baloon shape.
It is right next to button polys and the polys touch it constant during day time. The polys does not react to nennie at all.
I have seen my arrow crab steel food out of it's mouth. I have seen the Copper band stolen mysis from it's tencackles. All this happens during day time.
I have lost the same arrow crab during night time. The arrow crab changed it's skeleton. I found that night the skeleton on the nennie and the crab sitting right next to the nennie. The following day the arrow crab died.
The next casualty was my cleaner shrimp. I also saw it close to the nennie. It's tentckles looked like you burn it with a flame. It was black on the tips an very short. The shrimp never came close to the nennie except for that night. He aslo died during the next day.
The third casualty was my Copper band. There was a funny mark on it's body. He also loved to swim neat the nennie.
All my casualties was of night dwellers. The rest of my fish are still fine. The hide at night.
Conclution:
This nennie is dangerous only at night during hunting time.
The dangerous venum sits in the little ball on the body.
The venum does not dilute in the water colum. (Therefore not one of my corals or fish died in my tank thus far)
The venum is off a jelly tipe. (I handled it in the beginnig. I went underneath the live rock and was difficult to feed. I put on gloves and sort of drag it out underneath the live rock. It have not attached at that stage. My gloves were very slippery as if you put a jelly on the gloves. Remember nothing died from that).
It is a very peace full nennie as long as you stay away at night and you do not irritate it.
I Have the following in my sytem:
Feather star fish, Zoa's, Mushrooms, Finger Leather Coral, Frog Spawn, Torch Coral, Button poly's, Sun Corals, Star polys, Gorgonian, Pesilla Pora, Acropora, Disticopora, Ricordia, Tube Anemone, Chilly Coral, Spunges, Rock anemones, Cabbage Corals.
Fish and Invertabrates
Solar Fairy wrasse, Banna Wrasse, Midas Blenny, Clown fish, Lawnmower Blenny, Bi-colour angel, Pajama Cardinal, Fire Cracker, Hermad Crabs, Snails and Sea stars.
All off this share the same system and live happely ever after.

A full tank shot.

Hi everyone, can somebody please help me ID this "bubble" growth I have on one of the pieces of LR in my Boyu TL550? it's only growing in one place, at the highest point in the tank. It looks a lot like bubble algae, but looking at other Google images, I can't say for sure.
Note: I am busy trying get rid of a recent green hair algae outbreak, and one of the things I'm doing to reduce algae is having the lights on for shorter periods of time instead of on in the morning and only switching off at bedtime. Since the "reduced lighting time" this red bubble growth has grown bigger.
It looks nice, so if it's not harmful I'd prefer to leave it and encourage growth.
Thanks in advance! Excuse the photo quality though.

Thank you to everyone for submitting your photo's, as always it was a very difficult task having to choose just 10 photo's as there are so many top quality photo's, but sadly we do have to narrow it down to eventually just 3.
Please vote on the poll by choosing your top 3 photo's. Thank You.
You can click on each pic in the poll to enlarge it or all pics are listed below in full size.

Hi everyone
Have decided to take the leap to marine after many years of tropical adventures.
Don't know a lot but am looking forward to the learning process.
I have a 5ft with two sumps on the sides, I am hoping to build the one side into a protein skimmer and the other as bio filtration.
Moving into a new place at the end of the month, so cycling will only happen then.......

Well guys and gals, just received this email from ecotechmarine:
Quote:
Introducing the MP60

EcoTech Marine, the company that revolutionized the reef aquarium propeller pump, previewed their newest product, the MP60w ES, today at MACNA (Marine Aquarium Conference of North America) in Orlando, FL.
The MP60 is engineered for tanks holding 120 to over 1,000 gallons with up to one-inch glass thickness. The MP60 uses the same award-winning technology that has made EcoTech Marine's VorTech line the number one brand of pump among reef aquarium enthusiasts. Capable of pushing 5,500/gph, the MP60 offers the smallest in-tank footprint for a commercially available pump.
"The MP60 satisfies a pent-up market demand for VorTech technology in larger tanks," said Tim Marks, president of EcoTech Marine. "Prior to this launch, aquarists with tanks having pane thicknesses greater than three-quarters of an inch had very few options for high-flow solutions. We are excited to provide this much desired solution for the most discerning and die-hard hobbyists. Performance and quality are always our top priorities. This addition is a natural evolution for us, and perfectly rounds out our VorTech line of products."
The MP60 was designed to create the most flow in the smallest package possible. In EcoTech Marine's quest to continually raise the bar on reef flow technology, the unit runs quiet, cool and with minimal vibration. "This is a very proud introduction for us," added Marks.
The MP60's unmatched flow and out-of-the-box multi-pump wireless communication makes it the best value on the market for larger tanks. The MP60 leverages EcoSmart driver technology, introduced earlier this year, providing unmatched versatility, controllability and customization of flow patterns.
EcoTech Marine's patented VorTech technology produces broad yet gentle flow while placing the motor outside the tank--preserving the beauty of the aquarium and enhancing the health of the tank's ecosystem.
Availability and Pricing
The MP60w ES is slated to be available later this year through EcoTech Marine's network of premiere reef stores and online vendors with an MSRP of $695. Keep checking our website for an exact release date.

Hi Everyone, Thought I'd share what I'd built, like a good boy.
DIY Reactor:
Parts List:
1. 50mm Clear PVC Tube: 2 x 300mm Lengths
2. 50mm PVC Threaded Sockets: 4 x
3. 40 - 20 Threaded Nylon Bush: 4 x
4. 20 - 15 Threaded Nylon Bush: 4 x
5. 15 - 13 Threaded Connecting Elbow thingy: 4 x
6. Plastic Mesh
7. Sponge
8. Hose Clamps: 4
9. 10mm Clear Hose: 1m 'ish
Here the pics:
Now to add media/ pump and connect up the hoses.
My intention is to have this reactor externally mounted for ease of access, Sealing the joints may be interesting.
I may also need to add a ball valve to control flow and a slightly denser membrane rather than the plastic mesh. We'll see how the preliminary test go.

Hey guys. My one 250W globe went 2 days ago and I need to replace it. The following is a pic of what colour these globes made my tank.
They are the 20K Dymax globes. I like the crisp white colour that they give off and the coral colour reproduction is also very nice. But I am not sure how good they are in terms of growth.
How would the BLV 20K compare this colour wise. I know Adee runs them and he gets very good growth as well. Does anyone have a pic of a tank with the Aquamedic 16K globe? Also, if I go the 20K BLV route and it is too blue, how many T5 54W globes would it take to break that down to a crisper colour? I know clear cut answers is not easy so I am looking for rounded answers.

Hey Guys, need a little input here.
Spent the other night putting a second T5 ballast into my light unit. It all worked fine till I neatened up the wiring. Anyway, I think it is my end caps as I pulled them out of another light pendent I had.
How would I test the lighting without end caps to make sure that is the problem. Any ideas.
I was thinking of trying some banana clips (small ones) and being super careful when attaching them to the tubes. I am sure the gurus here will have a better method for me before I blow myself and my house up.

Hi guys
so soon ill need to do my aqauscaping but now the problem is that to get the perfect aqauscape ill need to break pieces of rock and stick them together again.
I know what to stick it together with, that will be aqaumend putty, normal pratleys putty or that new plastic stuff at builders, i have chosen aqaumend.
My question tho is how to break the rock into the correct size pieces?
Chisel, drill, grinder? what is the best way to go about doing this?

Hi everyone,
I've been keeping tropical fish for about 10 years in a 1,2 m (240 liter) tank. So I went to the local pet shop on Sunday with my wife to by some food. We always browse through the marine section and admire the various specimens etc. I made the mistake to leave my wife for 2 minutes with the shop owner, while I fetched my wallet in the car. On my return I was congratulated for being the proud owner of a new 1,8L x 0.9H x 0.6W marine tank with 2x sumps on a nice wooden cabinet to hide all the equipment.
I've delayed the delivery of the tank until I can move my tropical tank out of the way. In the mean time I want to learn more about filtration, lighting and all the ins and outs of keeping a reef tank.
I'll post photos once I receive the goods.
Regards
Philip

Hi there everyone... Been keeping tropical fish all my live, and have finally drifted to the other side hehe. From freshwater to a nano tank. I've recently taken over someones Boyu TL550 (they struggled to keep it stable and everything kept on dying) and am having great fun with it so far. I've managed to keep all the fish alive and added a cleaner shrimp last week. All is fine so far. I'm amazed at all the creatures that live in the live rock - wow!
Looking forward to all the help and useful info from fellow keepers.
PS: Here for three main reasons: (1.) To learn as much as possible about "nano" reef keeping - Boyu TL-550 (2.) Make some new friends (3.) Hopefully be able to buy livestock for my tank as time goes by, at below "LFS" prices seeing as I'm new to this and don't want too much money down the drain in case things go wrong. ;)

Hi Marco,
Please can you PM me the pricing on the 2-in-1 reactor of yours with the Hailea feeder pump with shipping up to JHB?

I've got six tanks on a stand, three on each side, one above the other and a sump in the centre below.
Each of the top tanks are 140ltrs and the sump 200ltrs.
The highest point of the stand is 2100mm. The piping for the return is 25mm,there are 3 off 90 elbows on the return line and a T right at the top to fill the tanks left and right side.
Each tank has a overflow pipe of 50mm with two way soil vent valve and reduced to 25mm into the next tank.
I tried a 3000ltr/hr return but the pump can't do the job. Should i make the return line smaller or go for a bigger pump.

Hey guys, Im gonna get a 4ft DT with 3ft sump so i gotta figure out what sump I want. Went to this shop and they had a TS2 for R2400 but it says it does 500L per hr and thats abit lacking i think. Then i saw a, Via Aqua skimmer that does 240gallons per hour so thats like 750L the guy said and thats R1700... Is the Via Aqua any good? its pretty decent in price and does 750L .. I wont have enough money to get a TS3 so my budget is about 2500.. Should i go for the TS2 or the Via Aqua? Help please :) :slayer:

Yes these reefs /sites are so called protected reserves, Exactly what is protected? And what can be caught/collected and what cannot?
Lets look at the permit that confuses. "Annual Recreational Fishing Permit" from the department of environmental affairs.
Now let take a look at the permit. There are a number of options one can choose, from including Angling to mud crab and Mollusc's collection.
1) You require a Angling version of this permit to fish at Sodwana. There are fishermen up and down the coast line and fishing boats fishing off the reef.
2) Spear fishermen are active in the area. There is also a version of this permit.
3)Scuba diving, One requires a version of this same permit to dive the reefs of Sodwana and Alawal.
4) Marine aquarium fish, This is also an option on this same permit. Which allows one to collect 10 Aquatic Plants and 10 Aquarium fish per day. "NOT FOR RESALE"
Now one is permitted (has to have the above same permit)to fish, spear hunt and dive the reefs.
My question is. Where can i find legislation that excludes the permit to collect fish in these areas? Is it not the "Dive operators" that so call protect the (Their) reefs preaching false legislation??? Can some one post a link maybe please.
How do the guys from Shaka and two oceans get permits?
Does anyone KNOW for sure?

Hi Guys,
Busy setting up a new system
I Have a display tank 1000x600x600 (Around 330 Litres)
I Have 2 x BOYU WM4 Wave makers rated for tanks 100 to 500 litres
Each controller controls 2 pumps (Pump A and pump B)
Each controller has Feed button that stops system for 10 Minutes
Each pump has flux adjustment (power I assume 30% to 100% Marked)
WAVE A and WAVE B
Each pump has time adjustment (5 seconds to 3 minutes)
TIME A and TIME B
The system has DAYTIME AND NIGHTIME setting
DAYTIME
A works (5seconds to 3 Minutes adjustable)
STOPS 1 second
B works (5seconds to 3 Minutes adjustable)
STOPS 1 second
AND THEN LOOPS
NIGHTIME
A works (5seconds to 3 Minutes adjustable)
STOPS 3 Minutes
B works (5seconds to 3 Minutes adjustable)
STOPS 3 Minutes
AND THEN LOOPS
Now the questions
A) Will this be good enough for the tanks internal circulation or do I need to add more pumps running permanently
B) Where should the 4 pumps be placed and what time and power setting should each one use for optimum random flow.
Thanks in advance

Hey guys,
I recently purchased a second hand Boyo TL 550. Most of the equipment is standard, as well as some additional equipment.
I scored the live rock as well as water from the guy. I threw the subtrate away as it was crushed coral and replaced it with play sand which I washed and washed and washed.
It is now the second week of me running the rank, with nothing inside, other than the snail I scored from the rock.
I have done one water change, 10% as well as rinsed off the filter media.
I have just done a water test and am wondering where my tank is within a cycle, if any and whether it is safe to start adding my CUC?
Parameters are as follows (Tested with a Tropic Marine test kit):
Temp: 25.6 Degrees Celcius
PH: 8.4
Nitrate: 15 ppm or mg/l
Nitrite: 0.02 ppm or mg/l
Ammonium: 0 ppm or mg/l
Salinity: 1.020
How am I looking?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
-
Hey guys,
I have a boyu 550 TL and was wondering how much water flow I require.
I bought the tank second hand, it has two internal pumps, which I have in the last chamber of the sump, the one is a Boyu standard 720 Litre/Hour pump, and I am not sure what the second one is.
I also have two SEIO 320 props in the display tank which are both rated at 1200 Litre/Hour.
Is this sufficient, too much, or too little.
Any advice be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Justin

Hi everyone, This is officially my first post. I have started this obsession 2 months ago when I stopped for a quick visit at Dorry Pets Centurion, just to look..:)
...2 months later my 1st tank.
I have started the cycling process with some LR but still need more LR before I'm ready. I will probably make the final addition of LR within the next week or two, but it is a START!!!
Just want to thank the guys from Centurion Dorry Pets (Dewald and Lanzo) for all the help and patients!!

Hi Guys
Ok so setup a 46cmL x 45cmH x 40cmW aquarium
Made a in DT sump about 46cmL x 45cmH x 10cmW
First compartment a hang on Skimmer then DSB and return with a 750L/H pump
Substrate is 1x 9kg Arag-Alive sand olite
Then fitted the top side with perspex and a normal plastic canopy, had a strip of LED's that I fitted about 30cm long
Then some LR that was in another tank full of GHA
In the first week the GHA disappear and a lot of pods and bristles
So I added another 30cm LED strip and 1x 30cm Blue LED strip
add some needle algae and red algae and 2 hermits
this tank is running about 2 months now.
Ordered a shroom to test and planing to add 2x 30cm LED strips as well
To be honest there is no sand in the DSB yet:razz:
Still thinking what to put in, my 9kg Arg-alive black or sea sand
but any way just trying to test the LED's
Will upload pics tonight
Oh and since I started it I didn't top up with RO yet due to the perspex

Hi,
Im a new member to MASA as well as TASA. I used to have tropical fish and a range of Synodontis species. At the moment I have no active aquariums. Recently Ive tried to develop a method for modeling the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium setup. The model presents a graph of the aquarium concentration levels of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and nitrogen with respect to time. The model can be adjusted according to tank size and inlet/outlet flow rate. Needles to say the model falls far short of reality.
It does give quite a good qualitative description of the dynamics during the startup process of a new aquarium.
When I started this project I didnt have marine aquariums in mind, but I was told by a user from TASA that marine fish keepers are more serious when it comes to recording and documenting their water parameters.
My aim is to gather enough experimental data on the fluctuating levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate during aquarium start up to allow adjustments to the model parameters so that it more accurately represents what is actually happening in existing aquariums.
I understand there are a lot of differences between different aquarists setups, water conditions and operation. Aside from this fact I believe that it is possible to obtain a generalized trend of behavior if enough experimental data can be gathered.
So if someone is willing to share his log records of ammonia, nitrites or nitrate levels during fish tank start up along with his tank volume, flow rates and water temp, I might be able to tweak the model to be more realistic. Here is an example of the model output in Matlab:

Or without denitrifying bacteria:
Any comments / suggestions / critique are welcomed.
Thank you

Hi guys
I want to know what you guys have experienced in terms of using cleaners in your tank to control parasites. From what i understand these are the guys who do the job...
Skunk cleaner shrimps
Fire shrimps
Cleaner wrasse
Neon cleaner goby
I have a skunk and it is fascinating to watch him mount my bigger fish, especially the foxface. Problem is he never gets to the smaller fish, or should i say the smaller fish never bother visiting the cleaner at his station.
I know that the wrasse is a bad idea with them not being suitable for tanks and captivity but it would do a better job getting to the smaller fish and cleaning them.
What about the neon goby and fire shrimp, do they do the job ?

Hi Everyone,
I have just purchased the below equipment and I was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback as to whether this is suitable, eventually I plan on setting up a reef tank, would the equipment I have suffice or would I need to get some upgrades.
Tank: 1200 X 460 X 750
Skimmer: Reeftek TS2
Flow Pump: Sun Sun 12000 Ltr/ hour
Heaters: 2 X 250 Watt
Live Rock: 20Kg
Return Pump
I am not 100% sure on the tanks lighting but it has two T5's as standard one Actinic, would this suffice for the beggining stages or would anyone recomend using Metal Halides immediately?
Next question is shoud I run a LSB in my sump or would the sandbed in the tank suffice I am planning on using Aragonite in the tank.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello all,
I just thought I would highlight the atrocious behaviour of a human being that has actually led me to be ashamed of the human race.
I am not willing to post the link or vid - it is that disturbing.
The article was recently posted on a news site and showed a teenage girl throwing live puppies into a river with not a hint of remorse.
It sickened me to the core! That we as humans can do something so atrocious and not feel utter shame.
I know this might resonate with some fellow reefers as I feel we all have a love for nature as a whole and to see this sort of hatred and carelessness is sad.
I trust we are always able to stop and see the bigger picture and not forget who we are.
Sorry for the rant but it is a terrible action that I hope is one day punished.
