  Skimmer help

  Hey guys, Im gonna get a 4ft DT with 3ft sump so i gotta figure out what sump I want. Went to this shop and they had a TS2 for R2400 but it says it does 500L per hr and thats abit lacking i think. Then i saw a, Via Aqua skimmer that does 240gallons per hour so thats like 750L the guy said and thats R1700... Is the Via Aqua any good? its pretty decent in price and does 750L .. I wont have enough money to get a TS3 so my budget is about 2500.. Should i go for the TS2 or the Via Aqua? Help please :) :slayer:

  Yes these reefs /sites are so called protected reserves, Exactly what is protected? And what can be caught/collected and what cannot?
  
  Lets look at the permit that confuses. "Annual Recreational Fishing Permit" from the department of environmental affairs.
  
  Now let take a look at the permit. There are a number of options one can choose, from including Angling to mud crab and Mollusc's collection.
  
  1) You require a Angling version of this permit to fish at Sodwana. There are fishermen up and down the coast line and fishing boats fishing off the reef.
  
  2) Spear fishermen are active in the area. There is also a version of this permit.
  
  3)Scuba diving, One requires a version of this same permit to dive the reefs of Sodwana and Alawal.
  
  4) Marine aquarium fish, This is also an option on this same permit. Which allows one to collect 10 Aquatic Plants and 10 Aquarium fish per day. "NOT FOR RESALE"
  
  Now one is permitted (has to have the above same permit)to fish, spear hunt and dive the reefs.
  
  My question is. Where can i find legislation that excludes the permit to collect fish in these areas? Is it not the "Dive operators" that so call protect the (Their) reefs preaching false legislation??? Can some one post a link maybe please.
  
  How do the guys from Shaka and two oceans get permits?
  
  Does anyone KNOW for sure?

  Busy setting up a new system
  
  I Have a display tank 1000x600x600 (Around 330 Litres)
  
  I Have 2 x BOYU WM4 Wave makers rated for tanks 100 to 500 litres
  
  Each controller controls 2 pumps (Pump A and pump B)
  Each controller has Feed button that stops system for 10 Minutes
  
  Each pump has flux adjustment (power I assume 30% to 100% Marked)
  WAVE A and WAVE B
  
  Each pump has time adjustment (5 seconds to 3 minutes)
  TIME A and TIME B
  
  The system has DAYTIME AND NIGHTIME setting
  
  DAYTIME
  
  A works (5seconds to 3 Minutes adjustable)
  STOPS 1 second
  B works (5seconds to 3 Minutes adjustable)
  STOPS 1 second
  AND THEN LOOPS
  
  NIGHTIME
  
  A works (5seconds to 3 Minutes adjustable)
  STOPS 3 Minutes
  B works (5seconds to 3 Minutes adjustable)
  STOPS 3 Minutes
  AND THEN LOOPS
  
  Now the questions
  
  A) Will this be good enough for the tanks internal circulation or do I need to add more pumps running permanently
  
  B) Where should the 4 pumps be placed and what time and power setting should each one use for optimum random flow.

  Water paramaters advice

  Hey guys,
  
  I recently purchased a second hand Boyo TL 550. Most of the equipment is standard, as well as some additional equipment.
  
  I scored the live rock as well as water from the guy. I threw the subtrate away as it was crushed coral and replaced it with play sand which I washed and washed and washed.
  
  It is now the second week of me running the rank, with nothing inside, other than the snail I scored from the rock.
  
  I have done one water change, 10% as well as rinsed off the filter media.
  I have just done a water test and am wondering where my tank is within a cycle, if any and whether it is safe to start adding my CUC?
  
  Parameters are as follows (Tested with a Tropic Marine test kit):
  
  Temp: 25.6 Degrees Celcius
  PH: 8.4
  Nitrate: 15 ppm or mg/l
  Nitrite: 0.02 ppm or mg/l
  Ammonium: 0 ppm or mg/l
  Salinity: 1.020
  
  How am I looking?
  
  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  Water Flow Advice

  Hey guys,
  
  I have a boyu 550 TL and was wondering how much water flow I require.
  I bought the tank second hand, it has two internal pumps, which I have in the last chamber of the sump, the one is a Boyu standard 720 Litre/Hour pump, and I am not sure what the second one is.
  
  I also have two SEIO 320 props in the display tank which are both rated at 1200 Litre/Hour.
  
  Is this sufficient, too much, or too little.
  
  Any advice be greatly appreciated.

  Hi everyone, This is officially my first post. I have started this obsession 2 months ago when I stopped for a quick visit at Dorry Pets Centurion, just to look..:)
  
  ...2 months later my 1st tank.
  
  I have started the cycling process with some LR but still need more LR before I'm ready. I will probably make the final addition of LR within the next week or two, but it is a START!!!
  
  Just want to thank the guys from Centurion Dorry Pets (Dewald and Lanzo) for all the help and patients!!

  My Testing Nano with LED's

  Hi Guys
  
  Ok so setup a 46cmL x 45cmH x 40cmW aquarium
  Made a in DT sump about 46cmL x 45cmH x 10cmW
  First compartment a hang on Skimmer then DSB and return with a 750L/H pump
  Substrate is 1x 9kg Arag-Alive sand olite
  Then fitted the top side with perspex and a normal plastic canopy, had a strip of LED's that I fitted about 30cm long
  Then some LR that was in another tank full of GHA
  In the first week the GHA disappear and a lot of pods and bristles
  So I added another 30cm LED strip and 1x 30cm Blue LED strip
  add some needle algae and red algae and 2 hermits
  this tank is running about 2 months now.
  Ordered a shroom to test and planing to add 2x 30cm LED strips as well
  To be honest there is no sand in the DSB yet:razz:
  Still thinking what to put in, my 9kg Arg-alive black or sea sand
  
  but any way just trying to test the LED's
  Will upload pics tonight
  Oh and since I started it I didn't top up with RO yet due to the perspex

  Hi,
  I’m a new member to MASA as well as TASA. I used to have tropical fish and a range of Synodontis species. At the moment I have no active aquariums. Recently I’ve tried to develop a method for modeling the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium setup. The model presents a graph of the aquarium concentration levels of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and nitrogen with respect to time. The model can be adjusted according to tank size and inlet/outlet flow rate. Needles to say the model falls far short of reality.
  
  It does give quite a good qualitative description of the dynamics during the startup process of a new aquarium.
  
  When I started this project I didn’t have marine aquariums in mind, but I was told by a user from TASA that marine fish keepers are more serious when it comes to recording and documenting their water parameters.
  
  My aim is to gather enough experimental data on the fluctuating levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate during aquarium start up to allow adjustments to the model parameters so that it more accurately represents what is actually happening in existing aquariums.
  
  I understand there are a lot of differences between different aquarists’ setups, water conditions and operation. Aside from this fact I believe that it is possible to obtain a generalized trend of behavior if enough experimental data can be gathered.
  So if someone is willing to share his log records of ammonia, nitrites or nitrate levels during fish tank start up along with his tank volume, flow rates and water temp, I might be able to tweak the model to be more realistic. Here is an example of the model output in Matlab:

  It is with great sadness that i have to let my humbug damsel go (Dascyllus aruanus) ,a fish that is as tough as nails and will not take k@k from any other fish.
  
  I have had it from when i started marines and it has been a pleasure all the way.
  
  reason for the sale is that it will not be fitting into my new system.

  Parasite control with cleaners

  Hi guys
  
  I want to know what you guys have experienced in terms of using cleaners in your tank to control parasites. From what i understand these are the guys who do the job...
  
  Skunk cleaner shrimps
  Fire shrimps
  Cleaner wrasse
  Neon cleaner goby
  
  I have a skunk and it is fascinating to watch him mount my bigger fish, especially the foxface. Problem is he never gets to the smaller fish, or should i say the smaller fish never bother visiting the cleaner at his station.
  
  I know that the wrasse is a bad idea with them not being suitable for tanks and captivity but it would do a better job getting to the smaller fish and cleaning them.
  
  What about the neon goby and fire shrimp, do they do the job ?

  Hi Everyone,
  
  I have just purchased the below equipment and I was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback as to whether this is suitable, eventually I plan on setting up a reef tank, would the equipment I have suffice or would I need to get some upgrades.
  
  Tank: 1200 X 460 X 750
  Skimmer: Reeftek TS2
  Flow Pump: Sun Sun 12000 Ltr/ hour
  Heaters: 2 X 250 Watt
  Live Rock: 20Kg
  Return Pump
  
  I am not 100% sure on the tanks lighting but it has two T5's as standard one Actinic, would this suffice for the beggining stages or would anyone recomend using Metal Halides immediately?
  
  Next question is shoud I run a LSB in my sump or would the sandbed in the tank suffice I am planning on using Aragonite in the tank.
  
  Any advice would be appreciated.

  Hello all,
  I just thought I would highlight the atrocious behaviour of a human being that has actually led me to be ashamed of the human race.
  I am not willing to post the link or vid - it is that disturbing.
  The article was recently posted on a news site and showed a teenage girl throwing live puppies into a river with not a hint of remorse.
  It sickened me to the core! That we as humans can do something so atrocious and not feel utter shame.
  I know this might resonate with some fellow reefers as I feel we all have a love for nature as a whole and to see this sort of hatred and carelessness is sad.
  I trust we are always able to stop and see the bigger picture and not forget who we are.
  
  Sorry for the rant but it is a terrible action that I hope is one day punished.

  Hi everyone,im nadeem, i have had many tanks, but just normal tanks keeping normal tropical fish. i now want to start a marine tank, i know nothing, i have not purchsed anything at all, could a please get some advice on what i need to buy to start up, i have not even got a tank yet
  
  i live in an apartment and dont have loads of place, i want to start a small tank that is also going to be a bit easier for me to manage as i am a total freshman.

  Is there such a thing as too many pods??........while my tank was cycling they skeemed it was the perfect love nest and i now have gazillions!! My DT glass is full of them and there are obviously plenty in the sump to.
  My little six line wrasse is in pod heaven but he would explode before he managed to dent them!!!
