Hi Guys
When I fired up my DSB, about 18 months ago, I used local live sand, below the low water level mark, but my problem is I think the high content of minerals in the sand, from Richards Bay.
From 100k's north and about 50k's south of Richards Bay, there is heavy mining in the dunes along the coast, mining for mainly zircon, titania and iron ore. It is so rich the mineral deposits, that you walk on the beach and your feet are black from the minerals that have stuck to you. Some places even the beach looks like people have poured oil on it. The Mineral deposits along our area are very very high.
Now my problem is for over about a year, I have had a non stop battle with GHA, I have tried everything you can, and the last few weeks I can only think that my problems are definatly coming from the DSB.
Do you guys know if zircon, titania and iron ore will be high in phosphates?
Also I thought that they would leach out, be absorbed, and end of story, but does it continue to leach and will it ever run out of reserves?

Hey,
Whilst hunting for a hermit in the cold water near knysna i saw a little red thingy attached to a twig.
I picked him up and brought him home with little hope that he'd survive... I was wrong!!
I now have not 1 but 2 happy healthy nennies, around an inch in diameter.
I think they are plum anenomes... Please confirm or disaggree with me... I recently lost a peppermint shrimp (as in cannot find him~) and was wondering if it were possible that one of the nennies ate a morsel the same size as him!!
Any ID and links will be hugely appreciated!

Hi guys, got a little octopus today, I will let Sean K amuse you guys with how it was caught, but neverless, I got it in a drum with air pump, will get a pico for it tomorrow, but what size should I get, it is the size of a fingernail.
Also when I put LR in, I will never see it again cause it will go into hiding, so I was thinking of getting a stone or something, covering it with crushed coral or something, give me ideas. Maybe some zoas I got I will gooi in there, but I want nice blue lighting for it.
Basically I will do like daily water changes from my DT, something like that,

Don't laugh, in my 600L tank I only have about 10 hermits and snails. What is an adequate amount in a tank this size? I've heard of people with 10x this amount.
I've put a request in the wanted section so if anyone has a few extra they'd like to sell, please let me know

HEEELLlllooooOOooo
I started out with fresh water fish for about 7years and decided to try marine.
The tank has been cycling for about 8 weeks with live rock so for the last weeks i have been looking at my rocks and wiping the glass off patiently (and yes every1 thought i was loosing my noodles:lol: )...
Its now about 2 months bought some fish and everything is going "OK, i guess"...lol
I have to admit that its a bit of a pain in the a$$ to maintain a marine tank.
well don't know much about marine ,but yep...at least the live stock is still alive :yeahdude:
About my tank
- 1200x 600x 600
- 4X T5 lights (2- blue and 2 white)
- 300W heater
- about 20kg of live rock i guess...
- got a biocolour blenny, tomato clown, damsel and a chrome.
- and of course a protein skimmer, sump and a stinky power head.
that's that...

I have 68 seahorses that are 7 weeks old and 1 seahorse that is 3 weeks old. Why only 1 three week old?.....Someone decided to PLAY dead when the rest of his brothers and sisters went off to great grandma's house to be raised.
All of the 7 week old fry are eating frozen whole mysis shrimp! :slayer:
These fry are all offsprings from the previous batch that I raised.

I would like to share this with everyone. In May when i was at the coast i filled a 50ltr bucket with sea sand to use for my new DSB's i was planning. Last week i installed the two tanks, added NSW, washed the sand with RO water and filled the DSB's. The next day i tested the water, the system was not yet connected to my DT, i was stunned to see all the critters in the sump, they look like pods or sealice, about 5-8mm in size. How can this be after 4 months.

Can anyone advise me where is the best place to get a tank built in Cape Town, which LFS does a good job and the best pricing, I am looking for 1300 X 550 X 600 with external overflow.
