hi all.
well I finaly did it. I have been wanting a sw tank for years and was always told how dificult they were to keep but recently found some friends with sw setups and did some more reading and realised that they wernt to bad.
I already own a 3ft tank that used to be fw and another friend ofered me a 1000l tank that he has in storage after he sold his house to go sailing.
so while im waiting for a cance to be able to pick up the 1000l I did some more reading and got a bit concirned about the posable temperature swings in my tank so I set up the 3ft in my bay window where I thaught the efect would be the worst (not the planed final position for the tank) and monitored the temp for a week it seemed stable between 24 and 28degC I also started monetoring the salinity and water temp of the local rock pools where I plan to catch my inabitants the results were water temp around 27degC and salinity of 1.029.
I was going to wait untill the big tank arived to actualy put in sw but I had a braai coming up and wasent going to have time to colect the muscles I wanted to derve on the day so I thaught what beter way to keep them fresh for 3 day than a sw tank .
so I drain the fresh water I had in the tank and headed to the beach with my buckets 4 trips later and I have +- 20kg of sand in the botom presumably live in some respect as it was colected below the waterline at lowtide 19 muscles 4 hermits and one snail all hapely inhabiting the tank.
at the moment water circulation is being achived by a 1400l/h bilge pump and I have a 3000l/h powerhead ariving this week. I have been monitoring the ph salinity no2 and no3 ca and kh and all seem to be within spec and the inhabitants seem happy.
no plans for fish or anything more with the current setup and some of the muscles will probably end up in the pot this week ( we didnt end up having them at the braai as we had plenty of fish that I speared the day before ).
good nes is that there is no sighn of alge in the tank I exept that which was growing on the muscle shels when I put them in I prosume this is because the at alge is using up all the nutrient that the nucance alge wold use to grow.
Anyway that is my story of how I ended up with a bit of ocean in my lounge.

Hi peeps,
Is it ok to add a female Bluethoat trigger to my DT where the male bluethroat is already established.
There is more than enough liverock/hiding places in the DT.
Will they fight initialy then pair up?

Hey all, so time is going realy quickley and i still dont have my tank's up here.
Is it safe to use a courie company?

My Aquabee pump on my deltec AP600 skimmer is getting a little noisy but cant really tell if its affecting the performance. Have stripped it but cant see anything wrong.
Just priced a new Aquabee pump now @ R980 and an Eheim @ R1900.
The skimmer is rated for 600L and my tank is about 600L so ideally I need a bigger skimmer, can I put a bigger pump on or is it not as simple as that?

Hi Guys
I'm in the process of setting up a hospital tank but have a few questions. I have recently had a serious outbreak of WS and lost a number of my fish. I started setting up this tank shortly after the last death to be prepared for future outbreaks. My regal is now showing a few spots and needs to be hospitalised asap.
The tank is 75l , bare bottom with a powerhead and HOB skimmer. My questions are...
1. Is the skimmer neccesary?
2. What water test should i do before adding fish?
3. Can I dose with copper sulphate to treat WS?
4. If i treat with hyposalinity what should the SG be?
5. What happens to the setup after treatment - do i leave it running?
6. If its left running without livestock , what maintainance routine do i follow?
7. What maintainance while it has fish being treated?
8. If the skimmer is used , is that sufficient filtration or should a use a cannister as well?
9. If a cannister is used , what filter medium should it contain?
Your wisdom will be appreciated.

Took quite a few fish pics (zillions....lol- especially the edible type) but the glass/light etc on the big tanks made it very difficult to get proper images. The smaller tanks are not that bad though- even if you have to walk around with a cloth and keep on wiping greasy/chocolate/dirty hand marks off the glass- thank you Alida:thumbup: :

Hey all
I don`t know if I can name the zoo but just wanted to share this and get your opinnions on this mater. I went to this zoo to have a look at the aquarium section, I was so upset that i wanted to leave after this. Maybe to the normal person that walk there its nice, but I think I can do a better job than that. most (I think all) of our tanks in our homes are better maintained and stocked than those at this zoo.
I don`t know the budget that they have to work on or what, but is there no way they can make that section a bit better and is this not suppose to be there for public education?

Hi everyone,
A few weeks ago I noticed a small amount of Bryopsis growing on a piece of rock in my tank. I did not think much of it, as I had the same happen in my Nano a while ago, but the Urchin took care of it. The bryopsis has now spread to about 5 rocks where it's growing in small clumps.
I introduced the Urchin to the tank about two or three weeks ago, but he doesn't seem to eat it this time. As is usual the hermit, snails, etc. are also not touching the stuff.
I'd like to introduce a herbivore to eat it, and have so far read that fish most likely (but not guaranteed) to eat it are Scopas Tang, Naso Tang, Bi-color blenny and Lawnmower blenny. Anyone have luck with something eating bryopsis?
My only other options are to increase the pH (I read to 8.5?)or increase Magnesium. I'd prefer to rather add a herbivore instead of fiddling with the water chemistry. I don't want to explore the harsher options (like freezing the rock, boiling it, etc.).
Any advice?

Ok I have had this GHA for some months now or almost 7 months & seeing something strange of late. Now the question, if GHA is left for some time is it possible if it could develop into a sort of macro algae ie. Feather Caulerpa C. crassifolia as such? The reason why I ask this is because I have never had any Feather Caulerpa C. crassifolia in my tanks ever & I'm seeing little feather looking plant & a toad stool looking plant & both run like an ivy vine. Could anyone could please explain what the hell is going on there?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
so i needed to setup a tank and fully document it and post it here and keep it updated, unlike my others. This thread is for the tank build and pics, please post in the discussion thread i will
start here
I will be making this tank to house an 8 month old anemone that has grown from a mere 10cm to over 80cm, it is a Heteractis magnifica. this tank will house it and a school of clowns that are all tank bred and have been living together since birth.
i might add a few corals and inverts to the setup over time and other fish, but the focal point of the tank will be the anemone.
The filtration will be a DSB in tank at about 10cm, with a sump containing, a heater, 2 x ts1 skimmers, and 3 reactors, one for carbon & katalyst, one for nitratr, and one for organitr, all brightwell products. there will also be an external zeolith filter for neozeo media and a JNB calcium reactor.
for lighting i will use a 150w metal halide 14k over the center of the tank, with 2 x gieseman pure actinics and 2 x giesemann aqua pinks.
for flow there will be 4 sunsun 5000L heads in a new surge box device i have been playing with.
all additives are brightwell, of which i will be using the following:
Alkalin8.3
Elemental
Iodion
Potassion
Bio Fuel
MBacter7
Reef Snow
NeoMarine Salt
the stand is made from treated maranti and will house the sump and filters etc
here is the tank

Hey guys, have a funny brownish algae show up on my rear and left pane. (the ones that don't get cleaned) there was a good coraline growth and now this.
Nitrates, Nitrites 0
Ammonia 0.01
Ph 8.2
Kh 11
I don't currently have a po4 kit cause nobody seems to have the Tetra M kits.
I dose Vodca, Vit C, and Koral Color (but the algae started before the KC). Calcium reactor and carbon reactor are fine.
Cut down on my lighting for a week.
Also cut down my feed quite a bit. Fish and Corals. Frozen food is always defrosted and rinsed.
No new additions.
Only issue I have is battling to get my SG up. It is at 1.022
Hope this post is ok. Posting from iPhone.

Hi
What type of UPS do I need to run a +-200W return pump for approximately 4-6 hours.
OR
We have a 6.6kva generator. But we need to convert the gennie to switch on automatically?
What are our options for the best price?
We are going away in december for - 3weeks and therefore we need to ensure a power failure does not cause us harm. The security company only sends an sms after 30 min of lack of power, and from our experience in last 3 years our power always fails in the morning hours (2am-5am). So difficult to get someone to come to the house and switch on the power again.
we tried an computer UPS 600AP, and it worked for about 30 minutes just on the return pump. We then connected it to a deep cycle deltec 110amp battery but then it burned out!
We don't no much about electricity... any advice much appreciated.

I was wondering, if you have a 30L marine aquarium with just a few corals and one fish, you feed very little, and do a 10% W/C everyday(3L, which is not much).
Do you still need to run a skimmer or can you just run a HOB filter with filter floss or something in that line?
What do you guys think?

I have started a little 90L soft coral tank and am running a Hagen Glo T5 lighting unit on it (2x 24W) with a PowerGlo and a MarineGlo.
I have had great success using Geisemaan T5's on my freshwater setup and would like to introduce the same to my 90L set up.
bearing in mind that I would like to use Geisemann's, what mix of tube would anyone suggest to run in my unit - all advice/suggestions welcomed!!

Hi guys after spending 2 months of cycling my tank,i lost my cole tang, gem tang, lutent tang,6 chromas, purple tang, jumping bean, yellow tang, and my blue face trigger on its way out, what had happen was last night at 10.30 when i got home i found my bubble master 250 skimmer was going crazy,so after i checked my fish i found all good and all eating, then 2 hours later i saw my wrasse jumping from top to bottom,i then realized i might have a amo spike, so i tested with seachem test kit and found that my amo was off the chart,i then did a 50 % water change and changed my carbon, air rated the water and me of all people was out of prime and stabality,so what i did was every half hour a did a water change and when through the night with out sleep,at 7 this morning i lost 6 fish and the rest through the course of the day,my daughter at 8am this morning told me that my domestic cleaned the tank with windowline and mr muscle shower, after telling me this i called her,and she said that when she cleaned the glass of the tank she had mr muscle
between her legs and it tipped over into my sump, but the ..... should of called me,so after a total of 5000lts of water change the ammonia is 0, and the other thing is she was told by my wife to stay away from my tank.:(

I've got a antenna lion that blatently refuses to eat any frozen meat. I have tried different sizes of lance fish, krill, different white fish. I have taken a whole lance fish on the end of a red straw and simulate a swimming fish. I have hide the straw behing a red gorgoinian, hide the straw behind live rock try the same during daytime and night time. I have put the fish on my live rock. It will take the pods that is coming for the frozen fish. I got a fire cracker, he steals the food and then the lion just watch him. Obvious do I feed the fire cracker now first. I treid for minutes up to 30 min.
I have dropped pieces of fish in front of him, put it close to mouth, I even chased him around in the tank with the fish to see if he tries to defend himself. We are now sitting on 4 weeks without proper food.
I stay in Standerton and my nearest Marine LFS is about 140km away. Should I start breeding my own fish to keep feeding live food and if so what fish?

Hi guys, need a bit of advise please.
My tank has been cycling for about 13 weeks now. I got a little pincusion and some zoas from a friend so that is going nicely. no fish yet, some hermits and snails
I have 2 x 54w on for about 10-12 hours daily. some days they will be off because of the problem.
I am getting a lot of green algue on the rock, glass and brown algue on the aragonite.
What fish will be suited to help with the algae on the rocks etc. i know i will get on the glass
Thanks guys ;)
-
hi,
as the subject says
-
Hi guys...
I need your thoughts and input on this please...
Due to my very heavy feeding requirements, I am opting to "cut" off flow throughout the tank (return pump switched off) at the time I am feeding.
Now you must take into consideration that I will be feeding from about 16h00 right throught to about 07h00 am.
Now in this time, the tank will only have it's circulation pumps on, but my concern is oxygen levels. The fish will all be "sleeping" mostly in this timeframe, but they still use up oxygen.
The refuge and DSB should be fine, as it has cheato that produces oxygen, but should I be concerned about oxygen in the DT?
Should I maybe **hate saying this as it is a dreaded subject** add an airstone to the tank???
Maybe get a little scuba diver on an airline...:P **joke...
Your thoughts please.

i think we need to tput this topic out for discussion.

Can the Aquamedic ocean light with leds be timed individualy at say 3 different times or is it just an off and on button??

Guys
what makes the "cone" a better design than any conventional skimmer design?
my understanding is that there is less resistance for the dirt to be pushed up to the collection cup?
please list the advantages and disadvantages of using it over the normal ones.
im interested in seeing what thoughts we get from this discussion.

Morning everyone. My name is Shaun and I live in the Kew area, Johannesburg. I have kept huge fresh water tanks for years. My biggest was a 6foot where I had Oscars and eels inside
I have been trying to read through all the links on this site. A huge amount of information by the way ;)
Regardless I have already bought a 1200x400x800 Sun Sun tank from the pet shop in the Boksburg Flea Market as this was the biggest one my Wife would allow. I am not sure of the name of my mini internal skimmer or my large external filter. I have two internal filters (mainly for current), current power head plus a gutter filter. I know a sump is ideal but apparently the external filter works just as well? Please tell me this is correct....please :whistling:
Today is in fact 3 weeks since I filled the tank. I put about 5kgs of live rock in last Sunday and have been enjoying watching all the little creatures which are now crawling around the tank or waving in the current. I also was wondering about that and when is the best time to insert live rock into my tank? Some say when you fill the tank the first time and some say after a month. Some advice would be appreciated here please
I am just a bit worried about the sudden "brownish" algae which has appeared suddenly after a week on only the live rocks. Will anything eat this algae? I also have a long red haired algae which came with one of the live rocks. Should I leave that in the tank or should I be worried about all this algae and begin trying to remove anything? I don't really mind the algae but I have heard the red one can take over your tank in time. Will anything eat it eventually? Starfish or a certain type of Fish maybe and how much longer should I wait before I can add them?
Anyways I am so excited just by staring at the empty tank at the moment

Reef Salt
Nitrate & Phosphate Free

Cycling your Reef System
ML/Special Blend and ML/Nite-Out II is the only NATURAL treatment program to cycle and balance your aquarium quickly and safely. This combination of natural products will control toxic ammonia, nitrite and nitrate while enhancing your water quality.
ML/Special Blend is the ONLY bacterial consortium that will do nitrification and de-nitrification.
PARAMETERS:
Alkalinity 2.90
Boron (ppm) 2.9
Calcium (ppm) 450
Chloride (ppm) 17,000
Copper (ppm) 0.0003
Iodide (ppm) 0.08
Magnesium (ppm) 1,350
Molybdenum (ppm) 0.113
pH @20.3 C 8.45
Potassium (ppm) 380
Sodium (ppm) 9,030
Strontium (ppm) 9.8
Sulfate (ppm) 2,180
Instructions
For best results mix with distilled or reverse osmosis water.
If you use tap water make sure the tap water is dechlorinated with a high quality dechlorinator such as MICROBE-LIFT(ML)/XTreme, ML/Dechlorinator + Water Conditioner, ML/Super Dechlorinator + Water Conditioner, or ML/Supreme Dry Ammonia Remover prior to adding in the salt.
Stir vigorously or aerate with an air pump to thoroughly mix the salt and the water. The solution may be used immediately, however, we suggest that the solution be aerated with an air pump prior to use. This will oxygenate the water.
Adjust salinity with an accurate hydrometer. We recommend a specific gravity range of 1.020 to 1.023 at 75º F (24º C). If the specific gravity is too low add more salt. If the specific gravity is too high, add more dechlorinated water.
Reseal the bucket tightly to keep moisture out. Store the bucket in a cool dry area.
Water Conditions
The ML line of salt and water conditioners is sold worldwide. There are aquarists that use R/O water, some use dechlorinated water and some even use tap water! We have no idea of the water parameters in your local area. It is therefore impossible to give specific recommendations for your individual area. Listed below are general guidelines that you should follow:
NEVER mix salt in an aquarium containing any live stock!
Transfer live stock into the aquarium after the salt is COMPLETELY mixed.
If your local water (even after dechlorination) contains high levels of minerals a white precipitate may develop until the magnesium and calcium salts find their ionic equilibrium.
Water Changes/Makeup Water
Prepare small quantities by using 1/2 cup (approx. 130 g) for each U.S. gallon (3.78 L). Follow the instructions to the left.
Carefully monitor your water parameters (pH, nitrites, phosphates, alkalinity, KH, etc.) weekly.
We recommend at least a 20%-25% water change every other week to maintain optimum water quality (or as is necessary, depending on fish load etc.).
Additional Notes
1) We do not use sea salts made by solar evaporation! While the remaining salt is natural, all of the pollutants remain along with the salt. Some salts (calcium & magnesium) tend to separate in the mix during international transportation as well as local shipping.
2) Mesh Size- Ecological Laboratories INC. takes extra steps to grind all the salts to the same mesh size to prevent stratification, so separation is kept to a minimum. Colored specs in this dry mix contains all essential major, minor and trace elements. Please note that dry forms of trace elements are NOT always white. When we formulate our salt mix, some of these trace elements will be visible to the naked eye. They are essential for a successful closed reef system. Bromide- We do NOT add bromide to our salt mix. Bromate is an extremely powerful oxidizer. When used improperly it can rapidly kill fish and corals. Ozone is not commonly used in the USA, however it is very popular in Europe. Aquarium ozonizers are relatively cheap and imprecise. Unless you have a professional quality ozonator to ensure the ozone is precisely dispensed, it will cause additional problems. Excess ozone, oxidizes the bromide to hypobromite and then to bromate ion!
3) Reef Salt 1.025 specific gravity/32.35 ppt salinity Reef Salts should not dissolve quickly! One of the
best ways to know if a salt is designed for reef invertebrates such as corals, clams, sponges and many other animals is to see how rapidly the salt dissolves into crystal clear water. If the water clears immediately that indicates that there are very few trace elements and likely low magnesium levels. Our Reef Salt is pretty clear five minutes after mixing, very clear after an hour and crystal clear within 12 hours.
4) Sea Salt 1.022 specific gravity/29.8 ppt salinity Basic Sea Salts do clear rapidly. Without the enhanced
levels of the various trace elements, the salt reaches an ionic balance rapidly in the water and usually is very clear in five to ten minutes. These basic Sea Salts are designed with marine fish in mind, but are safe to use with invertebrates. However, they do lack the higher levels of trace elements required for long term care of invertebrates in a captive saltwater system. We do not recommend using Marine/Sea Salt for Reef Tanks. It would not be in the best interest of your reef livestock.

hi i have a 12 gallon nano tank with a clown, firefish, goby +a cardinal. Im planning to install a refuge to help with nutrient export, I plan to have Live sand + LR+ Cheateo algae ect. Are their eny particular ways a fuge should be set up?IM planning to grow a pod population. Are their any hints about rearing them? and establishing a strong population.
Also is perspex safe in a reef tank?
also, the 2 pumps that pump water to and from the refuge, 1 pumps downhill and one pumps uphill. Wouldnt the ammount of water "pumped" differ due to the forces of gravity on the pump pushing the water up than the the 1 pumping down hill. Will this cause a flood? as their is no resistance on 1 of the pumps. Just a thought;)
im only 15 years old and taking it 1 step at a time. Just dont want to go to fast and mess it all up, so i thought i betta ask u guys:)

2 X Tomato Clowns
1 X Mandarin
Mated pair boxing shrimp
cleaner shrimp
Longspine Urchin

Hermit crab
porcelain crab
Water Parameters:
Alkalinity (dkh): 8
Calcium: 430
Phosphate: 5ppm
Magnesium: 1300
pH: 8.0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 5ppm
Ammonia: 0ppm
Salinity: 1.025
Temperature: 26
What lighting is over the tank?
3 X 150W MH (Bulbs changed 1.5 months ago) 2 X 54W actinic (bulbs changed 3 months ago)

Problem
So now that you have some info, my problem:
Yesterday I did a waterchange as I have done for the last 2 months, using Tropic Marin pro-reef matched to tank temp, salinity, etc. This morning I noticed that my green/pink plate had a few small white spots on it (more than spots actually, looked like lost tissue) Seeing as all my other corals were fine, I thought nothing of it,and I dismissed it.
I came home this afternoon and saw that the problem had gotten alot worse!
Pics:
Now:
1) What could be the cause?
2) What can I do to save my beloved plate?
Please help!!
Thanks gents

Hey Guys,
I've decided to put up some info and pics of my system. I initially created a thread on SARK but have decided that MASA is my new home ;)
Trying to keep up on 2 forums is just crazy.
Anyway so here goes. This is my first real tank. I used to keep a small tank back in the day at school (when we still used undergravel filters :D)
I enjoy DIY so most of the stuff, i've done by myself, like building my tank, the stand, tiling the wall, etc.
SO here is the pic of the tank being glued (dimensions - 1.6m x 700mm x 700mm), with side overflow.
Then, a nice big hole in my dining room wall, luckily for me, the dining room shares a wall with the garage (soon to be engine room).
and then finally, my home made stand, made from 40mm angle iron.

Hello from the UK!
I'm not new to saltwater, but new to this site. I think I recognise a few names from various other boards that I belong to *waves*.
My main sw weakness is with our graceful friends, the seahorses. At present I have 4 species; H.zosterae, H. erectus, H.barbouri and H.comes. I've just had my first brood of erectus babies which I'm very excited about! We only have around 15 of them, and I'm guessing the small brood size is due to the fathers age, and the possibility that we lost some of them in the DT.
Thankfully, my husband is enjoying the hobby too, so he tollerates my constant desire for more tanks!
At the moment our tanks are as follows:
65g reef (hubbys)
34g seahorse tank
25g nano
25g fry tank
10g fry tank
8g dwarf tank
+various little culture tanks
I hoping to upgrade my seahorse tank to a 60g+ in the new year
That's it for now. Just wanted to say hi :)

I bought a blue streak cleaner a few days ago, hes small, about 5 cm. I heard they were extremely difficult to wean onto frozen foods and usually die soon after addition to the tank. This little wrasse is eating like a pig from day 1, ive seen him actually eat a whole krill! Am I lucky or should i expect his demise?

Hi guys
I need some input on what the best method is to have bacteria help with filtration, especially a high nitrate level tank from heavy feeding.
I know there are a few ways like vodka dosing, but what would be best. My tank is only about 150liters, and other filtration methods currently are skimmer, DSB, cheato and weekly water changes.
I feed VERY HEAVY, yet I must get rid of the nutrient build up.
What would be the best way to go about it?
Thanks!!!!

Hi All,
I have a large chamber filled with ceramic rings (its the first chamber) - been reading some reviews on them & it seems most people recon to get rid of them (slowly each week).
What would you then replace them with in that chamber? (sure they also work to avoid micro-bubbles)
Any ideas / suggestions?
Cheers

Got this fish yesterday at the Durban airport, coming from a Cape town LFS, at 8:15pm, got home at 10pm, and started acclimitising till 1am. Put it in the qt tank, with all my other fish. I walked past the QT this morning at 7am, and my emp went mad when it recognised me, I had been away for a few days, it was splashing water at the surface, so of course I fed the emp a few pellets. The queen had been in the tank for about 6 hours and probably ate more pellets than all the other fish combined!!!! It nearly ate nori out my hand lunch time, tommorrow I know it will eat nori out my hand. If I ever had a fish that I would not QT, it would be this fish, but neverless, I will always QT all my fish, it is currently in QT with my other fish. But from now on, I will only buy these MAC approved fish, and this fish has also been carted around to a fish show over the last weekend.
The pics may look like it has w/s, but it is dirt on the glass.
Check how fat this fish is!!!
Proof is in the pudding, check it eating, this pic was taken 21 hours that it's been in the qt.

Well, its been 10 days and I took my screen out for its 1st cleaning. Here's what it looked like. Not bad for 10 days. Have noticed a definite drop in nutrients as well as cyano on my sand bed (both DT and DSB).
So far I'm pretty happy with the performance.
For those interested - I am ONLY running 2 x 20W CFL bulbs (4000K) about 5cm from the screen. When I'm done there will be 5 bulbs running. I just havent had time to finish it yet.

I was thinkin,I have been using fauna marine ultra bio and ultrabak on
My DT with great results.
I'm doing a waterchange 2moro and was thinkin when doin that is it ok to
Dose the fauna afterwards?coz then the skimmer will be off for few hours.
Thing I'm worried about is it ok to not have skimmer on just after a water change?
Another is it ok to have ur hands in the tank just after dosing the bacteria or will it interfe sumhow?or will ur
Skins oil react to it negativly?

Hi guys, need some advise
As an aditional export mechanism above my current dsb and Bio Pellet reactor, I am thinking of installing an algae scrubber.
The catch is, I want it in sump, with no extra pumps etc. so have 2 options in my opinion - feeding it from my overflow, or from one of the existing mechanisms in my tank - from here then my question.
Do you think I could use the outflow from my biopellet canister (using a ORP1000 pump) to feed my ATS?
the drawback on this is that my outflow would then no longer be directly in front of my skimmer, as is recommended, but would flow over my ATS, through my macro algae and some liverock then over my dsb and returned to the display
Technically I see no problem in doing this, but I am thinking about the biological implications in this - having the "waste" from the Bio Pellet run over the algae scrubber etc through the tank.
Any ideas on this?
Below a pic trying to demonstrate the setup im thinking about.
The red dot is where my bio pellets currently flow into, and the arrow at the top is where I am thinking of letting it flow into...

thought i would let you guys know that my first marine tank is just about ready. eventually i am planning to keep corals and fish.
so this is what i have so far:
the tank is a standard 4ft (1220 x 450 x 450) with corner overflow and 50mm outlet with standard 3ft tank as the sump. the sump is a 3 part sump, 1st skimmer(reeftek ts2), 2nd dsb, 3rd return(resun king-2a 1500l/h). i got my father to build the cabinet stand and canopy, the stand has been galvanized and painted with hammer tone the cabinet and canopy is made out of knotty pine. lighting i have so far is 1x reeftek 12000k 4ft t5 tube and 1x reeftek antic 4ft t5 tube. for flow in the tank i have 3 x sun sun 3000l/h vibration pumps. i have stuck blue vinyl on the back of the tank and blue perspex on the overflow box.
what i still need:
i still need to do the plumbing for the overflow and return.
im still waiting for araganite and need to get some live rock once the tank is ready.
i plan on getting another 6 4ft t5 tubes ( 1 blue and 5 1000k-12000k) once i start stocking the tank. i don't have reflectors for the lights but i am going to make a diy reflector and see how it comes out. and i still need to get an ro unit. a chiller at a later stage once i want to keep corals. and some test kits.
is there anything else i still need?
i will post pics of the tank later and of the reflectors once i have made them.

Hallo everyone!
I have to say, this is web site Rocks!!! :yeahdude:
Have personally lost hours
no its more like days reading all different threads on the site the past month or two.
So here is my aquarium: Boyu TL450, was given to me by someone who no longer had time to look after it about 3 moths ago. All pretty much standard still, but it will not stay that way for long, I love to DIY things. Already removed the ceramic rings and bio balls and replaced it with small pieces of LR that can fit into the return section.
Still lots of DIYing and mods to be done here.
Currently stock is 2 false peculiar clowns, 1 turbo snail and LR and lots of red mushroom polyps.

Hi Guys,
So I decided to get myself a regal angel only to realise that they are one of the most difficult species to get to eat. After reading a bit of literature on the net regarding them I realised that the ones from the Red Sea seem to do a bit better than the ones from Indonesia etc, although this has changed of late.
He seems very healthy and happy in the 4ft that he's sharing with a Blond Naso, but I am fully aware of the consequences if he doesn't feed and disease starts to settle in. I've tried multiple types of food from Ocean Nutrition including nori, Mysis, Krill and their much spoken of Angel mix, but he hasn't seem to take a likening in either:(
I've even go so far as to tie the food down to LR as some people suggest that they battle to eat from the water column as they're not used to eating like that.
I haven't tried clams, so where will I be able to get some as I'm not keen on going to a LFS and buying a priced piece just to get him to eat:P
O ja he's a yellow belly
Thanks

Hi Guys,
I have been looking around for some decapsulated brine-shrimp eggs without having to make it myself.
A few years ago it was a pretty common product on the market and I still find it listed on overseas sites. Am I looking at the wrong shops, any MASA dealers with stock.
Appreciate some help, based in JHB but if there is a source in one of the other provinces I will pay and courier
Thanks

Hey Guys.
I have been inspired by NSteyn's link on the DIY controller to start a project for a DIY controller. At first I'd like to start with a basic reading/reporting controller:
1. temp
2. pH
3. Saliinity
I think this can be done pretty cheaply and could be a lot of fun. I am a programmer by profession so I am happy to work on it with others on the forum. I have experience programming PIC micros and LCDs (built a tachometer for my RC helicopter).
p.s. just as an indicator of pricing. A pretty decent pic micro will set you back R30, a 16X2 LCD about R60, LM35 temp sensor about R20. So as a start thats a digital Temp display for just over R100 - then you can add circuits for pH, salinity, etc. of course here you would only pay incremental components as the micro and LCD will stay the same for all the additions.
Any ideas, other parties interested?
Cheers
Jason

When i got home yesterday we had no power , so in a rush i went to the garage to see what i could put together for some circulation, i found 4 windscreen sprayer motors from a car, i cleaned and joined them and connected them to a car battery, and let them hang in the tank to get some movement in the water, i was surprised how much current these little motors made, i ran them for about 3 hours with no problems.
As soon as i do a DIY on this i will post some pictures.

I'm in Pretoria this week so decided to visit a few sponsors.
First stopped at Dorry Pets, wow that center tank is amazing in real life. Photo's don't do it justice! Great fish and corals! Well done guys.
Second on the list was Idol Marine. Giant shop!!! I have never seen so much LR in one tank in my life! Think they could supply the 2 oceans aquarium  Once again wide range of fish and coral etc.
Two both shops, well done, you rock!
I have to say my wife saw so many fish and coral she want in the tank I might have to start a second tank soon. My tank has turned into her tank

Ive got the reef octopus bubble blaster xp1000 last week but just cant get it to skim correctly, when i have the water level at 13cm in the sump, waht they sugest, when the valve at the outlet is at almost close the water will just reach the bottom of the collection cup, when i open it more the level will drop back to the reaction chamber! Ive raised the water level but it is skimming very wet and overflow the whole time, is there any one who can give some advice on this skimmer? Ive run the skimmer for a week now.

Does one need to have lighting in the sump?

Hi guys
At the moment i have a Pentax istd camera and so far it has been fantastic for learning digital photography, and also getting to know what i like and what i dont.
the problem is that being one of the very first DSLR cameras of Pentax(only 6 MP) the settings and features are very outdated.
For example taking pictures at night i can only keep my lens open for 30 seconds(which to me is way too little)
I am aiming at upgrading and so far i really am in love with Canon camera's since i have worked with them before and know them well enough.
So anyway now that you guys have an overview of what i want i am looking for suggestions on what camera i should be getting.
Please help me choose my next camera............

Hi Guys
I am relatively new to the marine scene myself. It's been a year since i first got started. A stressful and expensive year! I want to share some of my experiences with all beginners out there so that they might learn from them.
I got given a tank by a friend. It was a FW tank that was used for SW. It had no overflow , had a HOB skimmer , a cannister filter and a couple of T5's with no sump. This guy was sold fish and corals by the LFS. Needless to say it all died.
Looking at his success at reefkeeping(or his lack thereof) i decided not to take too much advice from the LFS. Instead I researched the hobby on the net. Forums like this one was the best source for hands on knowledge. 3 weeks after setting up the tank i replaced the cannister with a sump and overflow box , added more lights , got the water parametres stable and started stocking up.
Then it went horribly wrong. I got a fish that had whitespot (not visible when i saw it at the LFS) . This one fish infected my entire tank and i lost about 5 fish(R2000) in a week. LFS kept selling me different meds that were expensive but did nothing for the WS. Then the LFS sold me a Anemone - it lasted a month. This phase passed and I paid less attention to my tank not adding much and everything went well for the next 8 months. Then i moved and setup a new tank with the right equipment. And WS is back. I lost 5 fish in the last 5 days after adding a new PB Tang to my setup 2 weeks ago.
Here are a few points to remember:
1. Before spending a cent - RESEARCH. Knowledge is your best friend.
2. Choose your equipment carefully. Ask for advice on this forum before purchasing.
3. Spend as much money on a Skimmer.
4. This is important... Set up a Quarantine tank at the same time as your display tank. If you don't you will regret it. Bear in mind that LFS don't quaratine their fish.
So they will bring with them all the nasties. Quaratine any livestock before adding to your DT. I learnt this the hard way so i spent this weekend building a QT.
QT's are great to have in an emergency - so be prepared.
5. Reef safe Meds sold for WS do not work. You need to isolate your infected fish
and treat with copper based meds. A Uv steriliser is also a good investment.
6. DON'T buy an Anemone. Be patient. Nennies need a really mature enviroment to survive. Read the threads relating to nennies before purchasing one.
7. Choose your LFS carefully. Here in Durban some of them are Ripoffs and keep
really poor quality livestock. If you are Durban i suggest going to Julies in Gateway.
I will add more points as i think of them but the best advice i can give is....
USE THIS FORUM FOR ALL YOUR QUESTIONS . The members here are very helpful
and very knowlegable. What i've learnt in the last year would not have been possible without these guys. So THANKS to all the menbers.
Good luck.

Hi All
Just wondering...
I'm dosing MB7 at the moment and i always switch the skimmer off for 4 hours. Which is recommended.
Then i dose a carbon source daily. My question here is should i switch my skimmer off for dosing. And also for how long?
Another question is should i be running an airstone to combat the PH swing? If so for how long should i leave the skimmer off for? I havent yet tested to see if there is a PH swing but alot of people say there might be one.
I just need to fetch my ph pen then i can test this.

Recently got the SK181 skimz skimmer, i havent had too much time to play with it other than assemble it but wow it is impressive. workmanship is top notch.
i was planning it for my new system. but you know how it goes excitement sets in and oops its plugged in and skimming :)
it is rated for a 1200lt system using and 17w eden pump with a 760l/ph airdraw
more pics of it to follow once i get it into the sump and skimming :)

Question about my alkalinity.
I regularly test my water once a month. I've noticed that i maintained my calcium level at a good level of 420-440 ppm but my alkalinity level stayed at 6kdh. I supplement calcium and alkalinity 1ml daily. Does this mean that i should add more on alkalinity? or this is the cause of a trace of Nit and phos in my tank?. (an endless battling with Nit&Phos)wheeew..

This is just a rough sketch of my tank im planning on building, it a Cube, 800X800X700 High. would really appreciate imput of what should change/add.

Detailed help requestAre you experiencing any problems in your tank? No
Brief Description Hello! I am working on my Interior Design Masters at Pratt in Brooklyn, NY. For my thesis, I am designing a hotel with a roof top pool which also includes a glass bottom that would, ideally look down 5 stories to the bottom of the lobby.
Ive spoken to a few local structural engineers about glass thickness, and recommendations for bonding materials, etc and they said I should speak to someone who knows about large scaled aquariums.
This is where you can maybe help!
Here are a few questions:
1. What are the pros and cons of glass vs. acrylic? Specific to weight, durability and strength.
2. What would be the thickness of the glass and/or acrylic, specific to the dimensions I'm working with?
3. Imagine the pool situated at the top of an atrium: what sort of materials are available for the structural beams supporting this pool? I would prefer for majority of the pool bottom to be exposed, aesthetically.
4. What would be appropriate bonding techniques?
5. And last, would anyone have any recommendations of online sources that have floor plans, sections and/or elevations of any large scaled aquariums? It would be nice to see, as a reference.
Thanks for reading, I hope this isnt too off subject :)

Having a piece of a coral reef in my lounge is amazing and challenging.
I always felt guilty that I have ruined some reef out there in paradise.
The alternative rocks were disappointing in terms of shape and functionality.
Ceramic rocks on the market have a low porosity, may contain silicates and were generaly of a ball shape.
Concrete These were more of a pancake shape and are very alkaline, they are porous, but need to be neutralised.
Corral sand & epoxy The epoxy covers the crushed coral reducing porosity, it is expensive and if you read the warning label on an epoxy tube you will think twice.
Plaster of Paris This could be great but the sulphates in plaster rot.
Calcium rich rock Porous; non-toxic; mouldable; and chemically similar to live rock.
I have developed a Calcium rich rock that can be moulded into shapes prior to firing it.
It remains porous and has a very similar chemical composition to live rock.
In theory it functions as a live rock does, once it is colonised by bacteria and algae.
If anyone wants to test some rock then please contact me for a free sample.
It is work in progress but it looks promising.
Cheers Rossco

Hi everyone
Starting up a reef tank for the first time. I have been a marine fish only for 30 odd years and enjoyed collecting many different species over the years.
I stopped marines for a couple of years only because of space when I got married and built my own house. Well My kids have taken to this like a fish to water so the interest is back and if the wife can have her desk then I can have my marines.
I have two tanks running, small nano reef that is just over a year old and doing well.
The other tank is fish only with fish we collected.
I am setting up a reef tank now in the lounge dimensions (L)1300x(W)700x(H)600 cant wait to have it running.
The stand and tank is in place, still busy with the DSB so in the next two weeks there will be water flowing in all directions.
Its great browsing the forums and lots of interesting facts and help out there, well done to everyone.
-
been surfing through the site for quite a while now and have finally decided to say Hi!! started to keep marines quite a few years back when i lived on the coast but had FO tanks, now ive decided to start up once again and head into the world of reef aquariums!

I did some research on reverse osmosis in a bid to understand what is happening in our RO machines, I thought some people may find this and interesting read and have tried to summarise what I have found in the text below which has various internet sources...
To understand how the process of
reverse osmosis works, it helps to understand the process of osmosis which is everywhere in nature. When two solutions having different dissolved mineral concentrations are separated by a semi-permeable membrane, water flows from the less concentrated solution to the more concentrated solution until an equilibrium is reached. For example is we have 2 salt solutions separated by a semi permeable membrane, one solution at 1020 and the other at 1024, water molecules would move from one solution to another until the solutions have the same salinity.
Osmotic pressure is a measure of how badly the water wants to go from the "clean" side (in our example the 1020 salinity) to the "dirty side" (the 1024 side)(low mineral to high mineral content side of the membrane) and that is governed by the mineral concentration differential (i.e. in our case the number of salt crystals present). This pressure can be surprisingly high and accounts for one mechanism used by trees to move water from the deepest root to the tallest limb, frequently a vertical distance of 30m or more.
As water moves through the membrane, most minerals it contains are left behind. The mechanisms which enable the water molecules to pass through the membrane leaving most of the dissolved minerals (ions) behind are not fully understood but it is definitely much more complex than simple filtration.
in the above image the left is a beaker filled with water, and a tube has been half-submerged in the water. As one would expect, the water level in the tube is the same as the water level in the beaker. In the middle figure, the end of the tube has been sealed with a "semipermeable membrane" (same as is found in an RO machine) and the tube has been half-filled with a salt water solution and submerged. Initially, the level of the salt solution and the water are equal, but over time, something strange happens -- the water in the tube actually rises. The rise is attributed to "osmotic pressure."
A
semi permeable membrane is a membrane that will pass some molecules (atoms) but not others. The best common example of a semi permeable membrane would be the lining of your intestines, or a cell wall. Which allows some molecules to pass into our bodies and keeps other molecules out.

In the figure above, the membrane allows passage of water molecules but not salt molecules. On the salty side, some of the pores get plugged with salt atoms, but on the pure-water side that does not happen. Therefore, more water passes from the pure-water side to the salty side, as there are more pores on the pure-water side for the water molecules to pass through. The water on the salty side rises until one of two things occurs:
- The salt concentration becomes the same on both sides of the membrane (which isn't going to happen in this case since there is pure water on one side and salty water on the other and the membrane prevents the salt from passing to the clean side).
- The water pressure rises as the height of the column of salty water rises, until it is equal to the osmotic pressure. At that point, osmosis will stop.
Osmosis, by the way, is why drinking salty water (like ocean water) will kill you. When you put salty water in your stomach, osmotic pressure begins drawing water out of your body to try to dilute the salt in your stomach. Eventually, you dehydrate and die.
In reverse osmosis, the idea is to use the membrane to act like an extremely fine
filter to create drinkable water from contaminated water. The salty water is put on one side of the membrane and pressure is applied to stop, and then reverse, the osmotic process. It generally takes a lot of pressure and is fairly slow, but it works.
And that ladies and gents is how RO works and why it is so important !

Hi all
I have a couple of bangaii cardinals in my quarantine tank. Is there anything I can do to ensure that they are as healthy as possible? Any nutritional supplements I can add to their food or to the water?
I will do a small water change mid-week and a 20% water change every weekend.
thanks!

Hi
Hi
Thought of turning one of my freshwater Nanos into a marine.
Will post a few pics and please tell me what I need to change where.
Ok the tank itself is a standard 1ft with custom filter to back.
Things I thought of changing. Overflow holes will be bigger 8mm each.
Return pump replaced with a 300-400 rated pump.

Add another CFL light fitting for 1x 14W Daylight and 1x 14W Sky white.
Maybe a blue LED nightlight.

Tank completed. The one on the right will be the marine cadidate as the filer section have not been fitted.
The back gets covered so no equipment visible.

Will like to keep soft corals and maybe a shrimp or goby.

Hi everyone,
I saw a RO unit on an online auction, and asked the seller "What is the TDS of the RO water this unit produces?".
He replied: "It is usually 0 but it depends on the source of the incoming water, because some areas the water is worst off that other places."
This doesn't make any sense to me, as the whole point of using the RO unit is to get the water clean. Would it mean with his units one would have to run it through the RO unit more than once?

Hi reefers,
i have a 6 stage R.O water unit from water well. the last stage is a mineral ball that has the following description on the filter cartridge.
Mineral Ball - Contains far-infrared mineralized balls. Far-infrared mineralized balls processed water contains more minerals for health. Moleccule of water being devided to smaller group performs better osmosis ability. Resolvability are easily absorbed by body for metabolism.
Now, my question, and i would appreciate if someone can tell me if this is a good thing or not, and off coarse i would like some facts to support whatever your theory is.

Hello everyone,
I've decided to start a new tank. I have always been inspired by the amazing colourful tanks achieved on the overseas forums and have now decided to start a new tank from scratch and try and achieve a colourful sps dominated system.
Inspiration
The following two tanks have been a huge inspiration to me and can only hope that I can achieve half of what they have achieved.

Well, always changing stuff.
I will only be able (hopefully) to restart my big 750L tank in the second quarter next year. Currently running a 240L display - standard Daro 1.2m tank that is drilled. Well I got everything around this tank that I want. And I need to do something.
Next couple of weeks a lot will change.

I need a dedicated quarantine tank. And I want to remove the cheato from above the DSB. I got 2 extra 90L tanks. One is drilled.
So the bottom drilled tank will become a refugium and house the cheato. Pumped from return chamber. Gravity overflow back to the 1st chamber. With light unit moved from old DSB / cheato setup to new refugium.
Top tank is the quarantine tank, will be isolated from rest of the system. Own heater, powerheads with sponge filters, small skimmer. 60L water changes done during the week.
-
Okey. I had the need to get a skimmer on my tank (which I am still keeping hush hush) and for the best results I needed a recirculating skimmer. Now, I do not have R3000 for a skimmer, so I decided to ask here and there, steal with the eye where I can and then I finally came up with this.
It cost me around R500 in total - including pump etc. One drawback is that it is not clear, so I cannot really see what is going on in it. I also did not use the best fittings one can find probably, but it seems to work just fine.
I would like to use this as a prototype and soon build one from perspex. I do not know much about skimmers as I am a biological filtration dude, so I have now only learnt about pin wheel impellars etc. On my new design I will have all this gadgets fitted, and see which works best.
Please feel free to comment, and critisize, as I am not the expert on skimmers at all, but this one works well for now...
The Skimmer:
I bought a 160mm PVC pipe from Builders that cost me R88 for one meter. I then chopped it down to 450mm for the skimmer base.
Then I drilled a 25mm hole at the bottom and fitted a 25mm bend. This was then connected to the pump and the venturi inlet was also fitted to the inlet side of the pump.

From the side.

From the bottom.
I drilled a 50mm hole for the intake that would be connected to my DT's 50mm outlets. Just below this, you will see the second 25mm hole that would then be the outlet from the pump, blowing bubbles into the chamber. Here I also place a 25mm 45deg bend, and slightly tilted it downwards before sticking.
For the outlet, we drilled a 40mm hole, and connected a 40mm pipe via a bend upwards. On this 40mm pipe, we placed two O Ring rubbers.
Then we placed a 50mm pipe over that, in order to slide up and down the rubber o rings. This will now allow me to adjust the level of water inside the reaction chamber.
For the bottleneck inside the skimmer body I bought a 150mm funnel from Builders Warehouse for R9.99
Then I cut off the pipe end of the funnel (THE BIGGEST MISTAKE I MADE... I will say why at the bottom...)
Then I just stick the funnel inside the reaction chamber and sealed.
Here is the skimmer then built.

Builders warehouse currently has a DIY bathroom silicone kit with the propper edging tools available in mass quantities for about R60
I was always scheptical about the ise of these silicone tools and having built several tanks without them, doubted their usefulness
let me say this simply..... these tools are not "nice to have" or "lekker" they are absolutely essential .............!!!!!!!
If you are building any tanks in the future, or considering it, go get these tools and if there is no builders in your area, get a mate to buy them for you !!!!!!!

Anyone tried or heard of one of these
Best Aquarium Filter - ECO-Aqualizer
A small write up from their home page
In short, the ECO-Aqualizer's main function is to reduce the bonding between H2O molecules which increases interactions at the molecular level which ultimately have the following benefits to water:
- Separation of Oxygen atom allows for immediate oxidation of impurities
- Oxygen atom can and will be more easily absorbed by fishes
- Toxins released and become free-floating for easier & effective removal
- Nutrients and Trace elements can be diffused for easier selective uptake by coral
- Surface Tension is reduced so carbon dioxide & other gases like nitrates can escape
- Halogens such as Na+Cl- become freed up to naturally sterilize contaminants
The result is your aquarium stays cleaner and refresher, filter efficiency increases, utilization of nutrients improves, water interaction increases (ORP), and the rate of Dissolved Oxygen increases. These all contribute to a healthier functioning aquarium.
In simple terms, ECO-AqualizerTM
restores and
maintains water to a natural healthy balance that normally gets lost in aquarium captivity.
If you understand the science of H2O molecules, you will easily grasp how the ECO-Aqualizer can achieve its full scope of benefits. But if not, it may be best to review the science of water (H2O).

I've been asked how I do mines....so here is the recipe.
You will need 500g of white cement (as per pic) add to that another 500g of oolite or fine aragonite.
Mix the dry contents well together
Add water until you get a thick paste.
To add some color I use just under a teaspoon of red oxide...makes a light pink color.
Spoon should be able to stand up in the centre on its own....so not too much water!
Most important at this stage...DO NOT add any eggs.
I use those re-usable silicone small muffin cups (the single bite size one's)
Add a dollop in each cup, when done just tap the tray until the mixture settles evenly.
Now if you in a bit of a hurry and want to use some...pop the lot in the oven and bake for an hour at 180 degrees.
Otherwise take the lot and leave it out in the sun and collect it the following day. I prefer this method, a much harder and better looking end result.
Anyways once done, remove each one and rinse under tap water you may find the ones that you had baked in the oven, will dissolve a little if you rub them too hard under the water....don't fret, just make sure you let these dry out again under the sun they will harden up again. The ones you choose to sun bake don't have this issue at all.
Either way give a good rinse allow to dry again for another day. To cure and this is not a must, as I have mounted frags with ones straight out of the oven with no issue...the easiest way is to pop the finished product into the bottom of the toilet cistern (the part where the water fills up in the back, not the part where u take a ....) with every flush u get a free water change.
I find the quickest response in getting a SPS frag to encrust, is when I cut the frag using my trusty Dremel and a cutting blade, to form a nice flat clean cut. Then using normal super glue with just the tiniest drop of glue, hold the frag for 10 seconds or so...base starts encrusting within 2-3 weeks.
Some pics with frags attached
Enjoy!

Hi All
I have just purchased my first tank today on special that includes the following.
Specs:
- Tank: 1200x600x500 + metal stand + sump + plumbing.
- Reef Octopus NW-150 Skimmer
- Return bump(not sure what make)
- CaribSea Dry Aragonite-Fiji Pink Reef Sand for display tank
- Seachem salt to fill the tank
The tank should arrive on Saturday and I will let it stand until the end of the month so the silicone can cure properly. I need some help with the DSB though, have been looking at the seachem gravel and would like to know which one would be the best to use for the DSB, maridean or pearl beach? I also want to know if the caribsea fiji pink is not too fine for the display tank?
Any help would be greatly appreciated thank.

Got him from a rockpool.

I went down to the North Coast for a few days to relax and do some snorkeling. Weather was a bit bad most of the time but on Saturday i went down to Thomsonsbay in the afternoon on low tide and had a few good dives along the beach towards Ballito. Saw some nice Butterflies but not easy to catch.
On my way back i stopped at the Tidel pool and had a dive there as well not to do any collection as i'ts against the law. There were two young guys also snorkeling in the pool and the one guy started talking to me and he told me that he's also a member on MASA forum, even gave me his forum name. I told him about the fish i saw along the beach and they left.
A few minutes later they were back asking if i had any luck and i said what luck but you could see they were not very happy about my answer, all they do is try and peep in my bucket what was cooking and they left.
I left about ten minutes later and here the shit started, on my way up to the parking area the life saver asked me if i've got a permit, and i replied What for, he said for diving and catching fish in the tidel pool. I said you must be crazy, do you see any fish. By the way do you need a permit to swim in a pool, i was really pissed of. No i don't see any fish but the two youngsters that had been talking to me previously phoned the Parksboard and they are waiting for you to lock you up.
Got nothing to hide, started laughing to myself on the way up and at the parking bay, guess whow!! MR PARKSBOARD, very nice guy and he told me the whole story. Not guilty, i wonder who made a ass of himself.
I GOT A VALID PERMIT, I KNOW THE RULES AND REGULATIONS, I DO PROTECT AND RESPECT THE ENVIOROMENT SO GET OUT OF MY LIFE.
REMEMBER THIS, THE WHEEL IS TURNING SLOWLY AND PRAY THAT WE NEVER MEET.
YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND HAVE NO BACK BONE, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU TRY AND SPY OR DO ANY HARM TO OTHERS. IT'S PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT MAKES THIS WORLD WHAT IT IT'S TODAY.ACCORDING TO YOUR BEHAVIOUR I WONDER ABOUT ALL YOUR STUFF IN YOUR TANK, DID YOU BUY IT OR BY POACHING (AS YOU TOLD ME THAT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR LIVE ROCK WHEN WE HAD THE CONVERSATION, AND I TOLD YOU I'TS NOT LEGAL)
SO PLEASE BOETIE PULL YOUSELF TOGETHER, YOU ARE STILL WET BEHIND THE EARS, GOT ALLOT TO LEARN.
REGARDS DAVE.

Hi Guys,
I finally got round to building my ATS this weekend. Everything is done except the lighting. I was thinking of using flourescents as opposed to CFLs - seems more efficient to me. I also have 2 screens so the flourescents will be perfect.
My question: does anyone forsee any problems using T8?
Cheers
Jason

Hi All.
I decided i should "document" my experience of drilling my Jebo tank.
I have tried to get as much "drilling" information specifically around the "JEBO / Juwel range of tanks that have been drilled successfully and there is very little information that came across.
I have obviously used some tried and tested methods that were discussed on this forum by other more experienced mariners and they worked well.
So here goes the pics and the methods i used to get the job done on a JEBO 1.2 meter tank.
BTW, this hole was drilled on the back glass, which is about 10mm thick.
The tank lying on its "front glass" on thick towels.
The tools..Normal Hole saw(used to make a TEMPLATE on a masonite board). This allows you to drill a nice hole without the drill "running" on the smooth glass. A 52 mm Glass Bit. Paid R80 from a tool hire shop...bargain as it sell for R250 at Builders Warehouse. A battery drill....slower speeds for control.
Drill using a Hole saw for the Template on a masonite board.
Water Well in Template to start the initial cut on the glass. Masonite board still in place.
Water well close up. I used a jug filled with water and a drip pipe ran from this to the well. This gave me constant cool , fresh water and allowed me to remove the "white" glass water that is produced.
Play dough is then used. Placed it around the "initial cut" and filled with water ...didnt have "window putty", but do have Kids with play dough.
Hole drilled 1 hour later. Placed a bucket on the inside of tank with a little water in there to catch the cut glass once it was done.
Everything works perfectly fine and my Dorso pipe is near "silent".
Hopes this helps

Hi
Can anyone give me a little technical info regarding air into a skimmer? I see a few skimmers (cheapies) suck air from pump's OUTLET pipe, where as skimmers like the TS series do it from the pump's INTAKE, which I feel is obviously better. Your thoughts?
Secondly, is it better to have the air be sucked by a thicker air pipe, or is the standard air piping best?
I have thought about it and to me it is better to go thicker, as you allow more air to enter, however, would this not lead to larger bubbles out the skimmer head?

Hi guys.
I have now ventured into the tricky world of SPS.
I just installed a reactor with Bio - Pellets, to help keep my water quality up there.
My question has to do with the flow in the tank.
I have 2 seio prop 1500 (4000 L/PH) and 2 sun sun somethings rated 5000 l/ph.
currently I have one of each on each side of the tank blowing towards each other.
The question is they are blowing directly over the SPS, and I have a feeling that on the sides, close to the pumps, this might be a bit too much linear flow.
Would it be better to raise the pumps to blow over the corals, and let the turbulance sort the flow over the SPS out.. (in other words not to have any pumps blowing directly on the reef, but rather over it, and hope the resulting flow in the tank is enough for the sps?)
Come on SPS Guru's help me out on this please.
Tnx!!
Niel

Hi all,
I read many articles on the net and both had some pro's and con's.
I'm aware that all of you don't have access to sea water, so you are happy with salt mix.
What is your take on this matter?
Which is better, sea water or salt mix with RO water?

New Ocean Acidification Study Shows Added Danger to Already Struggling Coral Reefs
ScienceDaily (Nov. 13, 2010)
Over the next century, recruitment of new corals could drop by 73 percent, as rising carbon dioxide levels turn the oceans more acidic, suggests a new study led by scientists at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The research findings reveal a new danger to the already threatened Caribbean and Florida reef Elkhorn corals.
"Ocean acidification is widely viewed as an emerging threat to coral reefs," said Rosenstiel School graduate student Rebecca Albright. "Our study is one of the first to document the impacts of ocean acidification on coral recruitment."
Albright and colleagues report that ocean acidification could compromise the successful fertilization, larval settlement and survivorship of Elkhorn corals. The research results suggest that ocean acidification could severely impact the ability of coral reefs to recover from disturbance, said the authors.
Elkhorn coral, known as Acropora palmata, is recognized as a critical reef-building species that once dominated tropical coral reef ecosystems. In 2006, Elkhorn was included on the U.S. Endangered Species List largely due to severe population declines over the past several decades.
The absorption of carbon dioxide by seawater, which results in a decline in pH level, is termed ocean acidification. The increased acidity in the seawater is felt throughout the marine food web as calcifying organisms, such as corals, oysters and sea urchins, find it more difficult to build their shells and skeletons making them more susceptible to predation and damage.
Recent studies, such as this one conducted by Albright and colleagues, are beginning to reveal how ocean acidification affects non-calcifying stages of marine organisms, such as reproduction.
"Reproductive failure of young coral species is an increasing concern since reefs are already highly stressed from bleaching, hurricanes, disease and poor water quality," said Chris Langdon, associate professor at the Rosenstiel School and co-author of the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Hi all
Decided to shutdown my tank about 4 months ago. Rushed into it like two years ago. Didn't set it up the way I wanted and battled with filamentas and cyano. So just got rid of all my fish and coral. Then went into the pet shop again and the bug bit again. So I decided to start fresh and slowly. Still got all the equipment. So here goes.
Setup up so far
Dt 1.2x450x450
Dsb 900x300x300
Flow 1x seio 6000l/h
1x sunsun 3000l/h
1x sunsun 5000l/h
Return is a lifetech 1000l/h ( hoping to upgrade this oneday when got some money)
Lighting
2x t5 54 watt white not sure of the Kalvin rating I think 16k
1x lifeglo t5 54watt
2x reeftek 20k t5 54watt
1xreeftek actinic also not sure of the Kalvin rating
1x skimmer not sure of the model hoping to get a ts1 when I'm big
Got about ten kgs of live rock which I sun baked and jik'd.
Filled the Dt and Dsb with live sand from the local beach.
I filled it with water on Friday and have left the lights off. Been treating it with microbacter7 to try get a healthy colony of bacteria growing. In my overflow box I have my carbon and some fluval as well.
It's only been a few days and I am already getting over waiting.
So what do you guys think. Am I doing alright so far any comments would be great.
Will add pics soon

I am trying to get a few of the smaller heaters (see picture), the reason for the specific heater is size related. The smallest aquarium heaters I have come across in South Africa are still pretty large for use in a smaller tank. Anybody know of a MASA dealer or distributor based in South Africa or do I need to order via Amazon
Any help would be appreciated

Clowns laid eggs again.... this time close to the glass, so that I could get some nice pics.
Usually they just ate them shortly after laying them and I always wondered why. I see now that the eggs were probably not viable previously, as they were much lighter in colour, and didn't have the eyes showing. Anyway they're protecting them toothe and nail now.
Seems a pity that they're just going to go to waste:(
Ok guys...... to avoid confusion, I'm going to name you all Bruce. No wait.... that's been done already...... make it Nemo!
-
Hi Guys, we recieved some nice new stock:
Skunk clowns
Panther groupers
Marine Betta
Maroon clowns

Rusty angle
Blue girdled majestic angel

as well as one white BTA with pink tips.

Hi Everyone,
My first post on MASA - the beginning of a very exciting journey into Reef keeping I hope:whoohoo:
I've had a couple of tropical tanks, but the reef gogga has bitten me bad, so I'll have to treat it...
I'm currently in the very early stages of my tank design and learning as much as I can.
I'm going to do a DIY build with the tank about 1000x700x400 (water level @ +-35).
I'll post the sketchup drawings as soon as I've done them to be scrutinzed and optimised.
Oh and btw: there are some really really awesome reefs on MASA!

aah finally i have got my two mandarins to eat frozen bloodworms. this is after three months of brine shrimp etc etc.
i find that feeding them just after they have woken up works best. i have seen the female suck b!loodworms out of the water column! sevral times. the bloodworm floats down nicely like a living creature and even if it settles somewhere its vibrant coulour seems to appeal to the mandarins eye!

8 the female eats more bllodworm than the male so i am going to feed bloodworm one day and brine shrimp every alternate day for a while

hi all
so i have jst recently bought a juwel, 400l system. 1.5x0.5x0.55 (lxbxh). here are the questions that i have, my tank is 10mm glass. there is no top bracing on the tank, as well as at the bottom of the tank, would i need to brace this? wil be using the tank as marine. the other thing is that at my local pet shop (northlands pets). there is a juwel marine tank on display there, running with no sump, no skimmer and standard lighting, if any of you have seen this tank it really is stunning. the tank is running on those "filter" sponges. nitrate sponges etc. nitrate sponge is change every 8 weeks. the parameters on the tank are perfect, no nitrates or amonia. they do a water change every 2 weeks i think. and the tank has been running stable like this for 3 years now. so i am planning on using these "filter" sponges to run my tank, as the tank comes standard with them, and will be using an hob skimmer. what are ur opinions regarding a set up like this as all of you use sumps etc? the other thing is that the tank is sitting on a wooden cupboard, larny cupboard too. will the cupboard be able to handle the weight of the tank? also the tank comes standard with 2 t8 4 foot lights, i no that this is not effecient enough to run some corals/nennies. wil be purchasing decent lighting in the future. any advice is welcome, coz i really wanna do the right thing here, and have no problems in the future.

...The Whale...
If you read a recent front page story of the San Francisco Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale that had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso; a line tugging in her mouth. A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her.
They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around as she was thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.
May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you.
And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude. I pass this on to you, my friends, in the same spirit.

Hi there Fellow Reefers
I am a newbie busy researching all aspects as to reef keeping. Staying in Newcastle makes life a bit interesting seeing that we have no LFS. So RO water will be a bit of a challenge. Could i use bottled filtered still water e.g. Nestle 5 Litre's that we find in supermarkets ?
Thanks and Regards
Cassim

Hi Everyone
My name is Cassim and I have recently joined MASA. What a superb site ! I dont have a tank at the moment but intend to get one after my research phase (which has been going on now for about 2 months of reading many on the threads on MASA). Chickaboo (MASA member) kindly allowed me to visit him a few days ago. I viewed his set and he advised me on the intracacies of reef keeping. Thanks alot Chickaboo. You guys are GREAT:thumbup:

Hi,
I recently took ownership of this tank :) I got it for a good deal.
I would like to transfer my live stock from my TL550 and add the live rock i've recently purchased in it. (15kg of kenyan and Fiji )
Current Hardware:
Reeftek Protein Skimmer : (not to sure on the make, maybe you can ID this for me)
Return Pump
T5 Ballast/Holder (No Bulbs) holds 4 x tubes
Electronic PH Sensor
Electronic Wave Maker Controller + Waver Maker
Electronic Temp Sensor
CO2 Tank
What is the max Wattage I can go for with a 38W Ballast ?
I like the Idea of the DSB but as you can see in my pics the sump is a bit small to accommodate it
Apologies for the poor quality pics!
I would appreciate you comments... :)

Hi it's good to find a place to talk and ask questions about my hobby. To start I have a 150 gallon reef tank. Been running for about 3 years. I will try to put a pic on here as soon I figure out how to do that. my initial reason I got on here was to see if anybody has tried the new full led lighting systems yet. I have a 72" ultralight setup it has 3 metal halide 250 watt 4 420nm 96 watt and 20 1watt apiece blue LEDs. are the led lighting systems better or not?
-
Hi guys. Need some opinions here. I need to leave a tank for a few weeks with no livestock at all in it but liverock and sand. Do you think it important to still run a skimmer? The water will still be circulating but lights will be off as there will no fish or corals that would need the lights.
So please answer the poll yes or no and give me your reason.

Hey everyone,
Which one is better, an external skimmer or internal? If you could use either one, which works better?
-
Hi All,
I have been curing about 40kgs of LR in 110L buckets at 25degC with a M1500 flow pump (with oxygen) for the past 2 weeks. Last night my ammonia finally tested 0. Nitrites have sky rocketed and there is about 25ppm of nitrates.
I thought I would use this scenario to do an experiment and would like some input:
Hypothesis: LR is capable of converting nitrates to nitrogen at a rate of Xppm/kg
So, what I thought I would do is measure the Nitrates on day 0 (the first day I get a zero reading for nitrites). There prob would have already been a few nitrates converted prior to this day but surely this would be negligable.
Then, I would take a nitrate reading every x days, depending on the difference I can notice in the test kit colour chart (resolution will be an issue here). Ultimately, I would expect the nitrates to drop to zero. I could then work out based on the time it took and the weight of the LR how many nitrates were processed per kilo of LR per T - obv. specfic to my LR (indo).
Anyway, are there any ideas, problems, etc that you can provide insight to.
Cheers
Jason

Posted this in my thread, but thought it would be more visible here for some advice.
Have had my Golden Pygmy Angel for 5 days now and its still not eating :(
I have tried frozen brine, frozen mysis, dwarf angel cubes, 2 different ON flakes and Nori...I have started dosing the food with Garlic as well and nothing. It doesnt look at all interested in food.
Normally I wouldnt be to worried about a fish not eating as my tank is mature enough that there is enough life to keep a new inmate sustained until it takes to prepared foods...however the Golden is not living in the rockwork, but prefers to stay up in the corners of the tank away from everything so I doubt it is even finding food itself.
My other angels have chased it a bit, but nothing to serious that it should be stressed or scared to go out and forage for food.
Spoke to my LFS and I think he has the right idea, I need to focus on getting it to expore the tank and leave its corner safety zone...but am not sure how to achieve this. Any ideas?

Does anybody know of someone selling there RO unit at a reasonable price?

Well, Ive been a member a while and mekaeel wants me to do a tank thread. I used to have a cube, but that is being replaced by the following:
The Tank
Tank= 900x600x500 peninsula (water level at 450. Im over deep tanks)
Lights= 8x39W T5s (giesemann bulbs)
Flow= Vortech MP40W ES and Ill probably need to add something else just to up it some more
Substrate= Caribsea
Aquascape= a 80/20 mix of Caribsea Scaping Rock and a couple of really nice mature pieces of rock. Want a very simple open scape. Not too intricate and over the top, zen.
Filtration= Reefocto X160 and carbon dosing (prodibio and vodka). NO DSB. The sump will however have a decent sized frag chamber, which will be lit by 4x 24 Watt Giesemanns
ATO= SAGA
Heater= Jager
Supplements= Profilux 4 way doser, so Ill do a three part dosing regimen, and use the 4th pump to dose diluted vodka.
Livestock
For the zen look, a school of fish is needed (Apogon, Chromis or something), then Ill be wanting a Royal gramma, some gobies and a showfish of sorts...
In terms of corals.. acros, montis, stylos, hystrix and zoas.
A few clams and other bits and bobs.
Ill start posting pics once the tank arrives- should be setup in December time off.
The picture below is just to give an idea of the scaping Ill be wanting to achieve- more of a doodle than anything. Would probably need to be less than the below..
-
Morning Guys
More & more i'm coming across tanks on the net that are minimalistic in their aquascaping. Very little live rock is used making the corals the real attraction in these tanks. Despite the small quantity of LR used these reefkeepers are having
great success with their setups. i've included 2 examples of such tanks.
My question is : What is the minimum quantity of LR needed in a 4 footer to achieve this sort of look and what is needed to compensate for the shortage of LR?
Your input would be appreciated.

Ok, so I have decided to open a thread on my tank and use it as a diary as there are a couple of things I am changing and testing. Will add picks a bit later when I get a chance. But to start things off with.
I have added 3 of Brightwell Aquatics products to the system to see how they work.
NO1 - Phosphat R (Regenerable) phosphate adsorption resin running in a PHR-100 reef octopus phos reactor. So far the only down side to them is the beads are very small, been running for two weeks now.
NO2 - Organit R (Regenerable) Dissolved organic absorption resin also running in a PHR-100 reef octo phos reactor. And oh my soul my water has never been so clear:thumbup:. Decided to test this as have read and heard that carbon not only removes the yellowing of water but also some of the good trace elements.Down fall here is the same as the phosphate r the beads are tiny. Added same time as the Phos R.
NO3 - Katalyst (Pelletized Bioreactive Filtration Media) Brightwells version of the NP Biopellets. The Pellets look like little pearls and unlike the other pellets this one gives you better instructions and Guidelines (In systems with less than 5ppm NO3 and 0.02ppm po4/3, respectfully employ 1g of katalyst per 2 Us-gallons of tank water.) Now worked out on a system of 500L one uses 66g of Katalyst. At first the pellets all clogged together and went to the top of the reactor. But once they had soaked up enough water and where given a good couple of swirls and shakes they are now tumbling lovely. They are in a ZFI-1000 External Zeolith reactor (Reef Octo) nad have been running now for three days. will keep all posted on the progress of this one.
As mentioned I will add pics a bit later

Hey Guys, I have a Magnificent Fox face that has become progressively thin over the last few months. I can even see his skeleton at the moment. :(
He continues to eat aggressively (and I feed him alot!) and shows no visible external signs of any of the common parasites that we all know to look out for.
None of the other tank inmates are showing anything similar so its either not infectious or their immune systems are stronger than his. I'm talking months of possible exposure here.
My view is that its probably some form of internal parasite,:001_unsure: like a worm or something:idea:. Excuse my ignorance if I am talking absolute rubbish:stupid:, but I would appreciate the guru's view on a possible diagnosis.
Once diagnosed I will probably need to do some research on a course of action or get some advice on the forum on what I could do.
It pains me to watch this guys fade away, I feel helpless:(

Hi all
We are making a marine pond, or actually we are planning it. The pond will be 3 X 1.5m more or less and will be build out of bricks and cement.
Now my question is that with what do i seal the pond to make it reefsafe and leak proof?
Any advice on this will be appreciated.
Forgot to add the depth, it would be 0.5m more or less

Hey all
Was lying in my dad garage. Any ideas what it is or what it may be used for. Or maybe somebody actually knows what it is. Its has a screw on bottom and inside it there is some kinda white "filter" sort of thing. The other has some kinda of "rolled paper".

Hi All,
I have a question about air bugs like moths, beetles, etc..... lets call them 'outverts' :D
Anyway - Having most of my tank and sump in the garage is pretty cool becuase I dont have to have cupboards and other enclosures. The result is that my tank and sump dont have covers. I often find all sorts od dead bugs floating on the surface. My questions:
1. I'd imagine if left to decompose these bugs would contribute to DOCs and eventually nutrients in the water?
2. should I be worried about them excreting toxins into the water?
Probably one of the more strange questions on the forum but I was just wondering. Any idea?
ps. I dont really want to close my tank and sump as it offers a nice cooling effect
Cheers
Jason

Let us list local life stock in our tanks. Not Fish, but all the other snails, hermits, zoa's or what have you.
Especially all the nice ones to have.
Can also list those that is better of in the ocean, specialist eaters, predators or just a nuisance out of your experience.
Will post my list later.

Hey guys i have a 150x70x50H DT and std 4ft sump.. So i want to get the nw250 with the 1OTP5000 pump rated at 1400L .. Problem is that the skimmer has a foot print of 45cm x 45.. and the std 4ft is 45cm wide, however the inside of the tank is 43cm wide.... See the problem.. How am i goin to get it too fit? Any ideas? At the moment im thinking of:
-Maybe moving a pump so it can fit (have no idea if i can do this)
-Use an external plastic bucket for the skimmer and plumb it down to the return..
Other option is the nw200 rated at 900L but will do the enkamat mod to it. Footprint 45x30..
Suggestions? Did u guys have the same problem and how did u sort it out? I would want to keep the skimmer in my sump preferably because a bucket big enough to house the nw250 wont fit under the DT.. Thanks guys
If u want to have a look at the DT then check out my thread..

Hi all, please help here with understanding copper, the cuprazin from waterlife, any tips, tricks, to try and understand it.
1)what are the pros and cons of copper, namely the waterlife cuprazin, is there any side affects to fish, does it smell/put them off their food? I know an overdose is lethal
2)Does it work on parasites also,
3)The cuprazin says dose day's 1,2,3,4,6,8,10, if there is no improvement, you continue dosing on the recomended days, but will that not surely lead to a overdose in copper which I know is serious? Also I will be doing heavy waterchanges, will this not also affect/dilute the strength?
4) How soon can you add other meds, after all copper is removed?
5)Any new fish I buy, can they go into copper (bear in mind that they may not be used to eating
6)Dwarf angels cannot handle copper, but what about anthias?
7)anything else to watch out for?Dangers

Hi guys,
I have been running my nano for around 5 months now. I have got a 6 line wrasse (oldest in the tank) - a stunning regal (about 1 month and healthy, never even got white spot), two cleaner shrimp (growing at a rapid rate), some hermits and snails, sps, lps and softies in my tank all in my opinion looking good.
Bought two fire gobies on Sunday, dripped and put them into the tank. Fed the tank and they both ate like pigs. Got home yesterday and the one was missing - found it in the rock work been eaten by the hermits. Fed the tank and the remaining fire goby ate very well. Then today I got home and the other one is in the process of dying - not swimming and breathing very heavy.
I have checked my water paramaters:
NO2: 0.1
NO3: 0
NH3/NH4+: 0
SG: 1.023
Feeding: Frozen food thawed in purified water and rinsed before feeding.
The 6 line and regal look fine with nothing looking wrong, does anyone have any idea as to what could be going on here? I really am confused and worried :(

Hi All
Please can anyone assist with some Cheato ( area : Sandton or Lenasia Areas).
Much appreciated

-
HI Sara
Congratulations and welcome to the sleepless nights.
My question is a DSB the only solution to filtration. I am confused. My setup is a 5 ft tank as the DT and I have a sump with 3 chambers, first chamber (protein skimmer) second chamber (floss, bio balls and ceramic rings) and third chamber live rock.
From my understanding it seems I may have over time high nitrates and phosphates based on this setup. Is this true ? One of the LFS has the same setup for all their tanks and they have nennies, all types of fish, inverterbrates and corals.
My objective for this tanl is to have a reef systems with a mixture of corals, reef fish, inverts and well balanced.
Please advise

Hi Guys - i have added a juv regal angel in my tank - he was very shy for the first 2 days and i only saw him peck slightly on the rocks. The corner that he usually hides has a Sun Sun pump and this morning i found him stuck to the outer cage of it with no right fin. I have taken him out and placed him in the sump. His gills look quiet red and he cannot swim properly cos of only one fin. What can i do to nurse him back to health.
Regards
Duran

Photo's: I had to save this Nennie from bleaching in a LFS (non MASA sponsor;)) so I bought it and brought it back to colour a bit again. It is very healthy, and has extended nicely. My tank is however a bit small for it, so I am looking at a better home for it...
Notes: Now, please, if you do not know how to care for anemone's dont even attempt to buy it please. I would prefer more experienced reefers that has addequite lighting and stable systems purchase it. You must at least know something about Anemone care before I will sell it to you. :P
Thanks;)

Granular Activated Carbon in the Reef Aquarium
Granular activated carbon in the reef tank and its effectiveness in removing gelbstoff.
By Richard Harker
Part 1 of 2
One of the most frequently cited reasons given for using granular activated carbon (GAC) in a reef aquarium is to remove gelbstoff the compounds that give water in a captive reef system a yellow cast. Bingman (1996) notes that these yellow-colored compounds seem to accumulate over time and are difficult to remove without the use of activated carbon.
As far back as 1986, Wilkens and Birkholz wrote of the use of activated carbon to remove material that can't be biologically decomposed any further (so-called yellow matter). Ten years later, Fosså and Nilsen (1996) echoed these feelings by writing, the main purpose of activated carbon filters is to remove from the water any organic pigments
(that) give the water a yellow tint.
Suppliers to the hobby have responded to the nearly universal support for the use of activated carbon by offering over two dozen GAC products. Unfortunately, the hobbyist has had very little guidance as to the functional differences between these GACs or their relative effectiveness at removing yellowing compounds.
A rare exception is an article published in
Aquarium Fish Magazine by Timothy A. Hovanec (1993). Hovanec described sources of GAC and reviewed the performance of four different types of source material for carbons. Hovanec found carbon derived from bituminous coal to be the most effective in removing tannic acid from freshwater.
In a more recent article, Hovanec (1998) states flatly that the best carbon for use in water filtration for removing dissolved organic carbons is bituminous coal-based carbon. He also comments about the decline in use of coconut carbon, stating that coconut carbons have the wrong pore size for filtering the target materials from water.
Between the appearance of the first Hovanec article and the second, Stephen Spotte and Gary Adams published a study examining GACs ability to remove dissolved organic carbons (DOC) in a captive seawater system (1984). They reached somewhat different conclusions. They found that carbon made from hardwood was most effective in removing DOC. Carbon of anthracite coal origin was least effective.
Reconciling the conclusions of the two articles is difficult. The Hovanec study examined tannic acid removal from freshwater, whereas Spotte examined DOC removal from seawater. The two authors compared GAC from a somewhat different mix of sources (both authors examined coal based carbon, but while Spotte evaluated lignite coal based carbon, Hovanec evaluated bituminous coal based carbon). The rank order of the Hovanec study from most effective to least was coal, coconut and wood, whereas Spottes rank order was wood, coconut and coal exactly the opposite. Hovanec concluded that coconut carbon was ineffective for filtering water. Spotte found coconut carbon less effective than hardwood based carbons, but still able to remove significant proportions of DOC.
Regardless of the study in which a reef keeper places more trust, Spotte identified only the manufacturer of the carbons (all were produced by one company), and Hovanec did not identify manufacturers or repackagers. (Most carbon sold to hobbyists is simply bought in bulk from a limited number of manufacturers and repackaged for the hobby. Calgon Carbon, a major manufacturer of GAC, alone produces 40 different carbon formulations.)
Potentially more useful to the hobbyist was a review of GAC written by Gregory Schiemer (1997), including several tests on 17 different brands of carbon. Unfortunately, while he examined adsorption ability, his test only subjectively measured a carbons ability to remove blue dye from water. Gelbstoff is composed of large complex organic compounds, so it is not clear whether a carbons relative performance in his tests correlates with a carbons effectiveness in a reef tank. While Schiemer used a five point scale to note relative adsorption, 12 of the 17 carbons rated the highest possible score. This lack of differentiation among the majority of brands makes it difficult for a hobbyist to narrow his or her choice beyond the dozen.
Test Procedure
If a carbons ability to remove yellowing compounds is an important reason to use carbon, it makes sense to compare the ability of various carbons to remove these compounds. Bingman (1996a) identified the source of gelbstoff as marine humic acids, and in Bingman (1996b) he noted that the presence of humic acids can be detected spectrophotometrically using the American Public Health Association (APHA) method outlined in
Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. In this study, a Hach DR/2010 spectrophotometer was used to measure the removal of color by GAC. The one change made from the Hach procedure was to follow Bingmans recommendation (in this case) to use a shorter wavelength of 400 nanometers (nm) rather than 455 nm as per the APHA method to increase the measurementss sensitivity to the presence of humic acids.
The procedure consisted of circulating saltwater containing gelbstoff through a quantity of carbon for 12 hours and determining the reduction in color over the time period. My 300 gallon reef tank water, even after several months without GAC, measures only 9 APHA color units, so a method outlined in Sieburth and Jensen 1969) was utilized to increase the color of the water. A combination of
Calerpa and
Sargassum algae was allowed to stew for several hours in warmed water removed from my tank until sufficient materials had been exuded from the algae. The exudations of algae are a combination of phenols and carbohydrates that bind with proteinaceous matter in saltwater to produce the yellowing compounds. This approach raised the apparent color from 9 to 89 units in a day, enough for the color to be visually detected against a white background.
Twenty grams of GAC were sandwiched between two layers of plastic filter material supported by 38 grams of polyester filter floss in an 8 by 30 centimeter vertically oriented acrylic tube. This arrangement forced water to flow evenly through the carbon. The quantity of carbon was chosen to reflect the recommendations of hobby authors regarding the use of carbon.
The carbon chamber was gravity fed with a powerhead moving approximately 1.5 liters per minute, pumping water to the top of the chamber. The chamber was placed in a tank filled with 4 liters of test water. While hobby authors generally give recommendations on the quantity of carbon to use, none of the sources I reviewed offered opinions on the rate at which water should flow past carbon. Hovanec offered no details on the flow rate of his experiment. Spotte and Adams conducted their flow-through experiment at 24 milliliters/minute (ml/min), considerably slower than my rate. Other work suggests that the effectiveness of GAC begins to decline with flow rates higher than 65 ml/min (Kerr and Quinn).
The traditional method of GAC use in a reef tank is to repeatedly circulate water through a canister filter or PVC tube fed by a powerhead (Moe), and both methods involve much higher flow rates. For this experiment, it was decided that rates closer to hobbyist rates would be utilized.
Color was measured at the beginning of the 12 hour test period, at least once during the test, and then once again at the end of the period. For each measurement, three replicates of approximately 30 ml each were removed from the test tank and then successively poured into a 1-inch cell. The color of each replicate was then measured with the spectrophotometer. The three measurements were averaged for the final result listed in the chart below. The blank for each test consisted of distilled water.
Results
All GACs were able to remove some color, but effectiveness varied considerably between brands. The highest reduction was 88 color units, virtually eliminating any color, while the lowest was 21 units, only a slight reduction over the initial color of the water. A control test using only the polyester filter floss removed 7 color units. Three of the top five performing carbons were lignite based. The top five carbons adsorbed considerably more color than the second tier of bituminous based carbons. The lone coconut based carbon ranked eighth, outperforming several bituminous coal-based carbons.
As a rule, the molded pellet type GACs were less effective in removing color than the other brands. Three of the four lowest adsorbing carbons were pellet shaped. The pellets had smooth, hard surfaces. The most effective carbons tended to be irregular in shape and offer a large surface area to volume. The surfaces of the more effective carbons were rough rather than smooth like the pellet carbons.
While there are many brands of carbons sold to hobbyists, there are a limited number of types of carbon sold. Bituminous coal based carbons make up the majority of brands available. Lignite based carbons make up the rest with the exception of a few coconut based brands. This may have affected the outcome of the tests. For example, only one coconut carbon was tested, and it was a mid-pack performer. It did, however, outperform the same companys scientific grade bituminous based carbon. This suggests that had I been able to acquire more formulations of coconut, coconut based carbons may have performed better.
Hovanec (1998) writes that (coconut carbon) was the subject of much marketing hype
but the drawbacks of using coconut carbon in the aquarium finally merged with the market forces and sales of this type of carbon dropped. One wonders what marketing forces would have prevailed if Spottes findings had been as widely read as Hovanecs. Perhaps the hobbyist would have a greater range of choices available to him. None of the large repackagers sell hardwood based carbon to the hobby, so it was impossible to confirm Spottes findings regarding the effectiveness of hardwood GAC.
GAC available to the hobby varies considerably in price, but price is a poor predictor of effectiveness. Some of the least expensive GACs outperformed GACs costing nearly three times as much. Figure 1 shows the relationship between effectiveness in removing color and efficiency expressed in cost per ounce. GACs shown in the upper right quadrant effectively remove color, and do so at a low cost per ounce. GACs in the lower right quadrant also effectively remove color, but do so at a higher cost. The GAC's found in the left quadrants are less effective on a unit cost basis than those shown to the right.
In part two of this examination of GAC well explore the use of carbon in captive reef systems. Well examine the recomendations offered to hobbyists on how to use GAC and look at the growing trend of passive use of carbon.
Acknowledgments: I wish to thank Jeff Voet of Tropical Fish World of Raleigh, North Carolina for his assistance in selecting and procuring many of the GACs used in this review.

I've had my CBB for 2 weeks now. It has taken to frozen brine but no dry food yet.
The trouble is it gets very little brine as the tank mates are quicker and greedier.
Has anyone used a feed box for the CBB? See my sketch below.
One would place frozen food in the box and only the CBB with its narrow jaws would be able to eat from it.
Would this work?, provided the CBB is not shit scared of it. Would it become dependent on being fed that way?
I suppose the box could have a suction cup mounted on it like the veggie clip fashion.

Hey guys
I'm sending two Monti plates to Salim from Cape Town to Durban. I phoned UPS this morning to find out about the status of the package and was told that it was being rejected due to "Plants in water". Obviously there would be water in the bags.
My question is to the sponsors. What do you clasify your coral shipments as? What do you tell the couriers is in the bags so that they don't reject it?

Hi,
I have a 700 liter tank for about 2 months now. I keep a few hardy fish and had some leathers and mushrooms growing quite well. The sudden rise in temperature the last two weeks caused my tanks temperature to climb to 27.6 - 28.9 ºC! My corals died unfortunately, but my fish aren't affected.
So I went to the local pet shop to talk about my belated corals and they suggested I install a chiller. Fine... but when they told me the price I spontaneously started to cough. R6000+ for my size tank. I've considered alternative DIY options...but no, I don't want my tank to look like a "maplotter" setup.
Seeing that this is the most expensive piece of equipment, I really need some advise on the matter. What make is reliable and what flow rate should I consider? Any advise will be appreciated..

Cycling your marine aquarium.
One of the hardest and longest things a marine aquarium hobbyist will encounter is the cycle of a new aquarium. The excitement and anticipation of starting a new tank is often met with disappointment when finding out you now have to wait 4 to 6 weeks for your new tank to cycle. In this article I will highlight the common processes involved with cycling a new aquarium.
To start off you have your tank, you add salt water, substrate and live rock. You will also have your heaters, pumps and any other equipment plugged in and running, once all of this is done you now have to sit back and look at a relatively empty tank for a month or so. This is, however, one of the most important aspects of starting a tank because if you rush this process you may end up killing fish and corals and ultimately give up.
Patience is key in setting up a marine aquarium, we all hate it but we have to do it.
Here are two graphs which explain how the cycle works and the different elements involved. Please note that the time-lines are just a guide as each tank will cycle differently, but you can count on a rough period of 4 to 6 weeks. You will know your tank has cycled once your ammonia and nitrite levels have spiked and they both read 0 on your test kits.
Here is an example of how I set up my nano tank.
The basic tank with lights and in the black filter box is the heater and a circulation pump.
Here the tank is filled with RO (Reverse Osmosis) water and salt is then added, you can see the salt laying on the bottom of the tank.
It is vital that you use RO water to start the tank and also for top-ups as tap water is not suitable and can lead to huge algae problems later on. There is also a circulation pump added which aids in the salt being dissolved. You can also see the tank is not filled up to the top, this allows for the water level to rise when the sand and rocks are added.
At this point you need to take at least 24 hours to allow the salt to dissolve, you also need to bring your tank up to temperature (about 25 to 27 Celsius). Measure your salinity, (ideally with a refractometer). Your salinity needs to be about 1.025 to 1.026. If it so too high then add some RO water, if it is too low then add some more salt and allow it to dissolve.
Once the salt has dissolved and the tank is at the right temperature you can then add your substrate. This needs to be very fine sand (sugar grain size or smaller). You can use various shop bought sands like coral sand, aragonite and so on, or you can use sand collected from the sea or a real cheap way to go is to use playsand, very cheap but needs to be washed lots and lots of times. In this tank I used a mixture of caribsea aragamax aragonite and playsand. Your substrate needs to be about 2 to 3 cm's deep to allow for worms and other creatures to populate the sand, this also provides food for the many creatures you will have in your tank. Once the sand is in, your tank will more than likely look very milky, leave it overnight to settle, once the water is clear you can then add your liverock. I rushed it a bit and put rock in straight away, this was not one of my brightest ideas (I have many of those :p) as the dust from the sand settled onto the rock and I had to clean it all off.
You get different types of live rock, cured and uncured and from various locations around the world where it is harvested from, Kenya, Fiji, Indonesia etc.
Here is my milky tank shortly after adding substrate and rock.
A few hours later it is starting to clear up.
A few more hours later and it was looking lovely :p by the morning it should hopefully be crystal clear. Now this is where the hard part comes in, waiting for the tank to cycle, the long wait, periodic testing of ammonia and nitrite, waiting for the toxic levels to disappear. Hang in there, you'll get through it.
After a couple of weeks you will more than likely notice some brown algae forming on the rocks, sand and glass. This is called diatom algae and is quite normal for a new tank and can occur in tanks well up to a year old. Grin and bear it, it does go away after a while.
A couple of weeks further in and you may start getting the dreaded green hair algae creeping in, this is also normal in some tanks, wait for it to get quite long and then pull it out, you may have to do this for a couple of weeks but it will eventually go away. You can reduce your lighting hours to only 2 or 3 hours a day to help stunt the growth of this algae, but you will win the battle. :)
So there is it in a nutshell, now I know there are many variations of cycling a tank and various other methods such as the zeovit method which allows you to cycle a tank in something like 7 or 14 days, you can try this method but it is a specialised method and needs to be followed to the tee, you also need special equipment and additives to use this method.
One thing I would recommend using, although not essential, is Seachem Stability or Prodibio BioDigest or Bioptim, these add beneficial bacteria to your aquarium and can help establish the biofilter, I have used both of these with no ill effects. There are also many new products entering the market such as Microbelift and Brightwell Microbacter7 but I have not used these products so cannot comment on them, but they do have some very good reviews.
Before you add any of these or any other products to your tank, ask for advice on the forum, there is a huge amount of knowledge and experience on the forums and the guys are only too happy to share their experiences and advice with you.
So......now what? Tank cycled? Yes? Cool....
Now you can start thinking about adding livestock, add a couple of snails, hermit crabs if you want and then start stocking with fish and corals, but SLOWLY. Add a fish or two then wait a week or two before adding any more livestock, this allows the bacteria and your biofiltration to adjust to the added bioload in the tank. Don't ever stock a tank too fast.
Have fun and enjoy your marine aquarium. Please feel free to ask any questions or add anything I may have missed.

Not sure if this was discussed in another thread.
But how long does silicone in a marine tank actually last?
Obviously our tanks had to be built with marine silicone, but does that have a lifespan?
just makes me wonder when i hear about tanks leaking.
I get scared of even cleaning the glass of my tank to close to the corners

Hi All
So i am almost done with the build of my new cube but i need some advice of testing the tank in terms of leaks, strength etc. Other then the fresh water test that everyone does is there other tests that i can perform on the tank before i start with the cycle.
Really dont want to end up in a situation were it leaks or cracks etc.
If there are guys out there (which im sure there are many :whistling:) that has been through this process please can you provide me with all tips/advice.
Thanks

i recently was given a product by mark vera who was down here from the states,
its a wicked little unit that one of his sponsers is developing for the marine aquarium trade......you get similar units called ring lights to attach to your camera, but these guys are developing these units with adjustable light spectrums, magnifying lenses and camera adaptors specially for the marine trade.
i believe that while he was here a few of the marine aquarium importers have made deals in order to get this product to south africa.
mark was impressed with our r.o.units and reactors and landed up swopping me for this baby, so he could take our units to the states and show some people there:thumbup:
here are some of the pics taken of aquarium depot's tank
as you can see at the begining i was getting used to it....but later i waxed the thing!!!

After selling up a few months back due to just not having the time to care for my cube.
I have decided to start a new reef tank that will hopefully be the perfect system.
This new tank will be the 4th reef system and having learnt from all the mistakes previously i am hoping this new tank will be quieter, cleaner, easier to maintain and more efficient than all my previous tanks.
Below are pictures of my three previous tanks.
2007 Angel dominated reef tank
2008 SPS dominated reef tank (My 2007 tank after moving house and re aquascaping and redisigning the sump)

So this weekend i decided to do some maintainance on my tank.
I've been trying to get my tank into decent condition without having to do much.
So this weekend my tank was looking worse for wear. Very mirky water and nothing was clean. I did a water change last weekend to see if it can help and that did nothing.
So this weekend i did the following and my water is CRYSTAL Clear! Now the problem is what did i do right? and will it work in future?
This is what i did
Cleaned out my skimmer. Left if off for 4 hours for the MB7 to settle.
Put a pump in the first and last chamber to blow up the detritus.
Added a bag of carbon.
Added 2 caps of Microbacter 7.
I have a funny feeling that the MB7 might have sorted my problem out. I know carbon also helps with this but the carbon hasnt really been helping. Also if i dosed 2 caps of MB7 yesterday do i wait 2 weeks to dose again or do i keep dosing every day? I understand the concept of dosing to reduce phos and nitrates but will i need a carbon source all the time?
My next question is what will happen if i dose MB7 without dosing a carbon source? Is there something that i can watch for until such time that i need to start dosing carbon? I dont want to dose both until such some that i understand what worked so well to make my tank all of a sudden sparkle.
I will try do tests to see where i'm going with this.

I found this guy in the DT on friday night, it spend the whole weekend on the glass. Its about 5-6mm long and I can't see a mouth like the slugs got...
Anybody got an idea?

Hi everyone,
So my 6-ft tank has been cycling for a couple of weeks now, and everything seems to be going ok. However, I would like to add diversity to the in-tank DSB.
Would appreciate if fellow reefers (preferably in the Centurion, Pretoria or Midrand area) can share a cup or so of sand from your healthy and established setup.
Please send me a PM with details where and when I can collect.

I was getting some water today, and remebered a friend telling me of the flagtails he has in his pooll. I also actually going to add some goldies for my QT/holding tank (will soon be my fly tank), I am sure they would help new fish settle in and encourage them to eat, basically calm and settle them. they also help cause if you feed several times a day they help take up the excess food etc.
What worried me though, if you have to add meds etc, or run hypo for new fish, then goldies maybe wont be strong enough. While the garden boy was getting me about 600l's of water I was diving and checking pools, so anyway I saw the flagtails and caught 5. I put them in the tank, and they were eating withinn 5 minutes, they really eat with vigour, they tough as nails, and they shoal in a very tight ball, tighter than chromis, and they look much nicer than chromis. It's just that they look like guppies, so I will never put them in my DT. But awesome liitle fish, does anyone else have them and what's their experience with them

Hi everyone
I just wanted some opinions as to whether my tank is ready for fish yet.
I bought the tank (300 litres) about month ago with live sand and DSB, it had been running for about 5 months then.
Since I have had it it has been cycling with live rock for 4 weeks. There was a huge brown algae bloom a couple weeks ago which is finally starting to go away now slowly.
The parameters are:
NO3 - 10
NO2 - 0
Ca - 500
KH - 6
pH - 8.2
I want to start with a couple clowns and a peppermint shrimp, would it be alright to get these now?
Any advice would be appreciated! :)
Thanks!

Hi :),
I just got a tank to start a reef type tank. It holds about 300 L. How much liverock should it have? I worked out it needs 20kg but not sure if it's right. Could I then put 10kg of liverock in and 10 kg of bio rock? Because I saw that liverock is quite expensive.
After I put the rock in should I put corals or fish in first and how long should I wait to put fish or corals if I use biorock with liverock?

Hi Gents
I picked up these two tiny little pencil wrasse...
Can anyone give me their scientific name and eating habbits? They are eating on the LR, but they do not take other food yet. I just want to double check their dietery requirements.
Sorry for the bad photo, but without SLR shutterspeed it is VERY difficult to get a fish to "hold still"
I can just also mention that the eye of this wrasse is redish / orange and it has a single black dot on the tail fin.
Thanks!!!

Idol Marine have always sought to be inovative leading edge and dynamic with their approach to marines, i was very impressed with the new wave maker they have in one of the holding tanks.
its not easy to capture on film and perhaps I'll go back and have another go as i never realy got a good pic, but here's the idea....

Ok
So like most of us we all have to deal with these little buggers. Here is what ive tried and the results...
Method1 - Syringe with Tropic Marin ELIMI-AIPTAS
Physically injecting the anemones with this stuff worked about 60% or so of the time, with some needing 2 or 3 subsequent injections. Difficulty - High, the anemones retract very quickly and are hard to inject. Cost R150
Method2 - Electric zapper
Created by scubaninja and sold at a few shops online. You power up the unit and try and jab the anemone with the electric needle. It worked on some and not at all on other. Difficulty - High, the needle is quite thick and you cant reach the hard-to-get-to ones. Cost R300 or so
Method3 - Butterfly fish
They are hit and miss and will in all likelyhood nip your corals. I had no luck with this. Cost R200+
Method4 - Peppermint shrimps
Also hit and miss. I have had one for a long time and he didnt eat them. I then put two more in and have seen a decrease in aips in my tank. So i guess its a numbers game. Cost R150 or so
Method5 - Aiptasia X from Red Sea i think
For manual intervention so far this is the best in my opinion. You have a syringe again but u dont inject the anemone. It's more a case of feeding it. The syringe comes with two needle points, one is straight, one is bent at the tip for the hard-to-get-to ones. I have had 100% success with this. The aips just suck it up and a minute or two later they are gonnerz. Highly recommended solution. Cost R200
There are a few other products and methods such as joe's juice and lemon/vinegar/kalk injections. These i have not tried so cant comment. Feel free to add to my post...

Good evening,
I am a brand new user of a Red Sea Max 130D which i have been running for nearly 3 weeks. Luckily being in the pet industry i have received lots of help from a pro in a marine shop.
Unfortunatly the last week i have noticed my water temp rising to nearly 30 degrees and i was told to get a chiller.
Not being a cheap skate i couldn't afford the R7k monster they wanted to sell me and through on of my suppliers i bought a Boyu L200 which can look after tanks from 80L - 400L as i know for a fact that i will soon need to expand my tank to a bigger thank.
With that said.. the instructions are horrible and i want to know the following. Do i require some sort of pump to push and pull the water from the chiller or will the chiller have the capability to suck and spit by itself...
Need help please

The Law and fish Collection in SA
My reasons for starting this thread is to try to put to rest the legal implications of catching marine fish for your own private tanks, with a post-office permit, in SA.
2 points - SCUBA and Tank (not collecting) Permits.
Tank Permits - NOT collecting permits
... from the Marine Living Resources Act [No. 18 of 1998]
PART 2: LOCAL FISHING
Granting of rights
18. (1) No person shall undertake commercial fishing or subsistence fishing, engage
in mariculture or operate a fish processing establishment unless a right to undertake or
engage in such an activity or to operate such an establishment has been granted to such
a person by the Minister.
And
(xxxv) mariculture means the culture or husbandry of fish in sea water; (xxi)
SCUBA + fish collecting = NO-no
RECREATIONAL SCUBA DIVING PERMIT CONDITIONS
The holder of a recreational SCUBA diving permit shall:

Hi guys...
I have a bit of a funny request...
I am looking for the services of an aiptasia eating CBB... I have this nice zoa that was a huge colony... Then, a few illegal aiptasia immegrants started squating around them... :(
The photo below is how the colony used to look - this colony has now been reduced to 15 polyps that are still opening on one end of the rock, and about 8 polyps on the other side of the rocks that aren't even opening.
Now, Joe's Juice is not an option, as they aiptasia is so close to the zoa's, that the zoa's will also consume the Joe's - that would kill them...
So, hence the request for a CBB...
Now we can do this in one of two ways:
1) I "lend" you the rock with the zoa's on, and let the CBB do it's worst... Once it is clean, I can have it back...
or
2) You can buy the rock with from me for R150, and once sorted out it is yours to keep...
I have many other zoa's and this colony is just a waste to be left dying like this...
Lemme know please!!!!
PS: The colony is in fact not this orange anymore, but a blood red colour - so it is healthy, but the aiptasia is getting the upperhand now...;)

This crab and I have had a running battle for a few months now.
Spotted him as a very small specimen and watched him grow and grow!:whistling:
Tried numerous attempts to trap him, but it seemed my cleaner shrimps would always get to the bait first:nono:
One night I managed to grab him twice with my tongs, but only succeeded in pulling both his nippers off. At least that made him less dangerous for a while.
So last night after lights out, I spot him again. Looking visibly bigger and with his claws back. Put my pest trap back in the tank, baited with calamari. Must have been right place, right time and he was hungry, within minutes he was heading that way, into the trap frantically trying to get at the bait in the holder (see first pic).
Out he came, much to my relief. Have not knowingly lost a fish to him, but given his size, it was just a matter of time. In fact, the other night something seriously damaged my small local clam, i have a strong suspicion it was this critter.
mike mike mike is now taking care of him !

Quick question -
Some of my marine tanks, equipment etc. that I had in storage was exposed to Doom "Room Fogger". I would like to use these items again but I am not sure what would be the best method of cleaning prior to use.
Is there a excepted norm when disinfecting and cleaning equipment before use. Appreciate any help

Hi Guys
I have a Green star polyp colony that doesnt seem to be all that healthy.
I bought it from LFS and it wasbasicaly a purple mat with some polyps.
That was about a month ago.. it still looks like it should have more polyps.
I see other guys pics and it looks like a beautiful waving bed of grass ) closest i can compare :))
Is my colony just still young or should I be concerned ?

Hi All
I have recently been busy building a new tank. Now my questions are :
1. What should i use to clean the tank for all excess silicone smell etc to be removed so that it is ready for cycling.
2. How long should the tank cycle before additions.
Should i clean it using RO?
Thanks

Hi
I have been working on setting up my first marine tank I have been running a 1.5m malawi tank for around 10 years and have always wanted a marine tank
I ordered a 1000 x 600 x 600H(+/- 300L) with sump(100L) tank, it will only be ready in about 2 weeks but I would like to make sure I have all I need for the initial setup
I would like to set up a reef tank(one day) I'm looking at around 6/8 fish, correls and inverts, I am mainly interested in keeping shrimps
I just have a couple of questions
After alloooot of reading I found I can have playsand and no aragonite in my dt and dsb?
For the top ups would I use RO water?
Water changes would I then mix salt with RO?
As far as I understand I need the following
Skimmer
Saltwater Heaters
Return pump
Powerheads(when I start to stock the tank)
Lights ( Ive been looking at 2 lights (600mm long) which holds 4 T5 tubes)
Do I need a moonlight?
Is it necassary to have "dead"/stock rock with live rock?
Salt
Test kits and supplements for whatever i have in the tank
Please let me know if I'm missing something i don't know if I need any reactors etc.
Any advice for initial setup would be greatly appriciated
Thanks

Hi Guys
I am moving in the next month or so.
This has now given me a chance to have a new tank built and start fresh, without all the previous mistakes I have maid.
I am having a 1000mm x 1000mm x 500mm tank built, out of 12 mm glass,
rimless with a skinny overflow and dual returns in-line with the overflow.
The will be setting up the tank at my new place to start cycling so that by the time I move in all will be peachy!
I will using NSW in this tank and Mix for emergencies top-ups.
This is going to be a moray eel lagoon, and possibly have a school of Humbugs or Yellow tail Damsels.
Corals are going to be mostly Shroomz and Polyps.
I will also possibly have a island for crustaceans to escape the Morays.
I have the following equipment for the tank.
1x Susun 5000lph
1x Sunsun 12000lph
1x 300w heater
AquaStarlight 2x 250 MH de @ 20 000K
4x 39w T5 unit with moonlights
Reef Octox 200 external with Sicca 2500
Boyu skimmer with OTP2000 pump
I realise I do not have enough flow and will remedy this ASAP!
Could anyone suggest a cheap uplift pump, my overflow pipe is going to be 50mm at the base of the skinny overflow, and the returns will be 50mm each.

Hi Guys,
I need 5 X 40L tanks,
None of the tanks need any filtration - will be using Sponge filters for filtration and heaps of water changes.
Any source of reasonably priced Nano's available - price, rather than heaps of added cheap filtration devices etc is of importance. Anybody on the forum that can build tanks ?
Any help would be appreciated, if any of the sponsors could help, please let me know and I will pop in to see what you have available.
Thanks
Andre

Hey everyone,

HI Guys and Gals,
I am new to this hobby but not new to fish tanks,
My set up is as follows, starting small so i can keep it under control!
I have a Jebo R760 half moon tank! I have modified to filtration system to fit the Boyu skimmer, i also have a Sunsun JVP 101 wave make and a buyo powerhead for extra water movement. The Jebo tank came with its own filtration system system which works perfectly!
At the moment everything is setup and has been running for just over a week now! I have 5 - 6km of live rock, halk being Kenyan and the other being Fiji! The rocks have new things on them ever day and i have found 3 tiny crabs hiding in the rocks! 2 black ones with red eyes(not hairy) and a white one. How do i get these little buggars out rather than staying in their homes? :P
Im rather concerned about the lighting as the lid came with 2x T5 8W bulbs, which i have changed the one to a UV black light for the coral! Any ideas on changing to stronger bulbs and which ones to fit?
All comments welcome, need all the advice i can get!

Hi All,

How cool is this tank?
YouTube - 1200 gallon reef at 9000 feet
http://ReefBuilders.com is the source for all your reef aquarium news.
This is a video of Stephen Hurlock's 1200 gallon reef aquarium about 2 months after setup. The new tank is 10' long by 5' wide by 3' tall. This is an upgrade of the previous 600 gallon reef which was in it's place. Much of the livestock is from that previous tank as well as harvested from the local Denver CO reef aquarium community. The water is circulated within the aquarium exclusively with 8 Vortech pumps, with only four on at one time working to spin the entire water mass in a gyre-like motion. The vortechs are placed inside a custom designed dry cavity next to the overflow box. There is over 5000 watts of lights, mostly halides with a few VHO actinics.

Hey everyone,
So I was just thinking, I always see corals for sale and always seem to miss the sale. I was wondering how a coral auction will go down. Lets say I start a sale of a coral at R200 and then everyone can bid on the coral at say R20 increments, the person with the highest bid after 48 hours gets the coral.
