  The Solomon Islands Greytail Poliourus Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus poliourus) was first described just over a year ago and is now making its LiveAquaria debut for sale*tonight Diver’s Den. We aren’t sure what the asking price of this beauty will be but we are fairly certain this gem will be in the hands of some avid angelfish freak in a mater of minutes if not seconds. First described by Luis Rocha and Jack Randall in 2009, the species was often misidentified as Chaetodontoplus mesoleucus until genetic testing proved it was in fact a separate species. This is one beautiful specimen and are looking forward to seeing a few more of these in the hobby in coming years.

  RSS US imports of Albino Clownfish delayed by bureaucracy

  In August, 2010, we reported that Proaquatix would be the worldwide distributor for Marcel Triessl’s Albino Ocellaris Clownfish,* Designer Clownfish enthusiasts were salivating and hoping for a short wait.* Sadly, governmental regulations in South Africa have been holding up the process of exportation as recently reported by Marcel. Marcel wrote, “Here in South Africa growing algae, cultivating plankton, propagating corals and breeding marine ornamental fish is illegal. Believe it or not.* No export permit will be issued for captive bred fish without having an aquaculture permit.”* To us, this isn’t actually surprising, just a case of “growing pains” as a hobbyist breeder steps into the commercial and export realm where government regulations really start to play a role.* In this case it would seem that Marcel’s efforts to export Albino Clownfish are actually being thwarted by regulations designed for the foodfish industry.
  
  
  
  
  “When the aquaculture application form was created, nobody thought of marine ornamentals. The whole application form is made for food fish farming, etc.* I spoke to somebody who is running a foodfish farm…it took him 8 years to get his permits.” posted Marcel. We can only hope that the South African government sees the value in the ornamental fish trade and green-lights Marcel’s efforts to export these fish and distribute them through Proaquatix.* Some fish breeders believe that on average you’ll get a random albino out of only 200,000 to 300,000 fish reared.* If it takes 8 years for Marcel’s fish to travel abroad, we could see Albino Ocellaris appear elsewhere before he’s able to capitalize on his innovation and investment.* Marcel hopes that the paperwork will be completed by February of this year…and then it’s in the hands of the South African government.* Good luck to both Marcel and Proaquatix as they continue their efforts to bring Albino Clownfish to the masses.

  RSS Coral Colorblind: This is what you call an orange hammer coral

  Coral Colorblind is a new installment here on Reef Builders where we attempt to sort out what it means when a coral is labeled with a certain color. There are way too many unscrupulous coral sellers who are being dishonest about the color of their corals through excessive blue lighting, vivid color camera settings, photo shopping and a whole lot of imagination.
  
  
  
  
  Orange. Hammer. Coral. Sounds simple enough right? If it was then why is it that so many vendors are selling off-colored Euphyllias like hammers, torches and frogspawns as orange when they are clearly closer to sand, tan and sometimes just plain brown? We think we speak for many reefers when we say we are sick and tired of all of the creative color imagineering that these guys are using just to squeeze out a few extra bucks from an unsuspecting coral buyer. Of course we’re really looking at the online coral vendors who rely on their photos to represent their corals to their customers. Let this be a warning to the vendors who are walking the line because we’re going to start calling you out for selling corals that in no way resemble the pictures you’re posting. If your orange hammer coral doesn’t look pretty darn close to the specimen in the image above then don’t call it an orange hammer coral, mmk?

  Lookout IVS Portal because the ReefBrite Aquaviewer is now ready to compete in the brand new aquarium magnifying segment of the aquarium market. The ReefBrite Aquaviewer may not pull double duty as an algae scraper but what it lacks in magnetic fields it makes up for with two channels of LEDs, one blue and one white. The Aquaviewer has a lens with a two inch diameter which is good for 2.5x magnification and it also comes with* a handy carrying case to keep the lens nice and clean.   Sump design?

  Hello...
  
  I have recently build a tank (1680L,610H,595W) and is looking to build a sump now.
  I have checked out some of the sumps on the web but is still not sure as to what size I should go for (How big is the sump supposed to be?).
  
  The tank is going to be on a stand so i want the sump underneath the tank,i have plenty of space at the bottom of my tank.
  
  Another thing that i was wondering about is how many chambers i should put in the sump as i want both fish and coral and want to have the best for them how many chambers should i put in and what will each chamber contain?
  
  As this is a 600l tank should the skimmer rating also be 600l?
  
  also i have 1 hole of diameter 45mm in the side of my tank so what will the rating of the pump be(how much water will that size hole supply to sump?)
  
  
  I STILL HAVE LOTS OF QUESTIONS BUT THOUGHT THIS WILL BE A GOOD START!!!

  Poking through the pages of “The Lionfish Cookbook,” we can pretty much see that the new plan for dealing with the invasive lionfish in the Atlantic is “If you can’t beat ‘em, eat ‘em!” Key Largo-based conservation organization REEF, who helped organize the lionfish tournament held in September, has developed a cookbook with tasty recipes to prepare the fish.The recently released cookbook is a collection of 45 recipes which is the group’s latest strategy to counter an invasion of the non-native reddish brown-striped fish in Florida waters.
  
  
  
  “It’s absolutely good eating — a delicacy. It’s delicately flavored white meat, very buttery,” Lad Akins, director of special projects for Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF), told Reuters. He authored the cookbook along with a professional chef, Tricia Ferguson.
  
  As we noted before, the fish have very few natural predators helping to fuel their ever expanding numbers in the Caribbean and Atlantic. Some scientists are now listing the invasive lionfish species among the top 15 threats to global biodiversity.
  
  The authors dub the lionfish”The Caribbean’s New Delicacy” and includes*tips on collecting, handling and preparing the colorful species, as well as providing expert background on its ecological impact.*Concerned about the venom in the lionfish? No worries there as all the venom is contained in the spines and not in the meat of the fish so just simply cutting off the spines of the fish while preparing is enough.
  
  Akins said he hoped the cookbook could help create a commercial market for lionfish that would speed their eradication. But he wasn’t sure whether the brightly colored invader would appear on the menus of Miami Beach eateries.
  
  “It certainly is on the menu in many other countries — the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Dominican Republic, Mexico,” he said, adding that orders for the recipe book, which can be purchased online at www.reef.org, were coming in fast.
  
  
  The book can be purchased for $16.95 via the REEF website.

  RSS Natural reef bommies are the ultimate aquascaping inspiration

  Some of our favorite dives are shallow sandy areas with isolated patches of corals, nicknamed bommies. These natural settings are perfect inspirations for a reef tank aquascape. We found this lovely youtube video depicting some nice bommies, and wanted to share it. We can’t wait to see some aquariums designed that are inspired by this kind of natural beauty.

  Jumping Clown

  Hi guys.
  I arrived home last night to find that my one Clarkii Clown had jumped out and died.
  Water parameters are fine except for the phosphate that is a bit high. The one that jumped is (I mean was) the bully of the two.
  
  1. Any ideas on why the Clown would have jumped?
  2. What would happen if I add another Clarkii Clown again?

  Hey guys, So i just started a membership here to this website. Looks pretty awesome I must say! I was just recently given the job in my high school to begin a Marine aquarium from literally nothing. Finally after about 6 months of fundraising, I have received about R4000. So once I am back in school I will finally be able to go start the marine aquarium in our biology lab! I look forward to reading the information on this site and if anyone has any suggestions about where to buy from or what to buy please do share! Thanks!

  Algae scrubber & refugium with caulerpa or Cheto

  Hi guysI am busy designing my new 2000 L coral tank for my factory as a display, hope to have it running by the end of the month.
  
  My question is
  Can one use a refugium with caulerpa or cheto (haven't made up my mind which to use) with an algae turf scubber. The reason I am asking this, is not for the use of removing nitrate, but to add more critters to the system.
  
  I obviously will still have my DSB as well as live rock in the sump.

  Hey ppl
  
  Hope everyone had a good 2010. Now 2011 is hear.
  And i can’t wait until the 13th.
  Luckily it’s not a Friday. hehe.
  
  Im getting my first hermate crabs then.
  
  Currently im busy with a wooden frame at the top of the tank.
  Its about 65mm pine that I’ve used for hiding the water level at the top of the tank.
  And just so it looks nice.
  
  Almost done with it. Ill post some pics when it is.
  I just have to do some routering on the top part of the frame, stain it then varnish.
  
  Then wala.
  
  It looks great so far.
