Hey all,
We are heading to Sodwana the 1st weekend of February. Was thinking of looking in the rock ponds and while out snorkelling for some stock to bring back. I would just like to ask for some pointers from the forum to be on the look out for. I know to have a collectors permit and I will be bringing the stock back in a drum filled with NSW and have a circulation and air pump on the drum. anything else? :) -

RSS Colored Lily pipe anyone?

We recently connected with a glass smith who has begun experimenting at taking the concept of Lily pipes to the next level. Lily pipes are extremely popular with aesthetic-centric planted freshwater nature aquariums. Although Aqua Design Amano has been making clear Lily pipes since their beginning, they have never yet released colored lily pipes. Which is too bad because clear lily pipes allow light to reach every part of the tubing, guaranteeing frequent necessary removal and cleaning to remove the unsightly algae. Cleaning coralline algae from clear lily pipes would turn off any reefer from using them again. The lily pipe in our possession is an experiment which uses cobalt blue tubing for the neck and a black outlet funnel. We’ll be giving the two-tone colored lily pipe for a spin with an Eheim 2211 and we’ll let you know the vortex-producing abilities of these handmade lily pipes.

hey guys.
Please, I need urgent help. I stay in Hermanus and there is no shop close by where I can buy medicine for my fish. It looks like they have got an itch or white spot. its still in the beginning stages. Ive got 5 clowns,1 tomato clown,1 keyhole angelfish and a striped dottyback.2 turbo snails and 4 starfish. only the clownfish got the white spots and they are all eating well and they are very active. What can I use to cure them when I do get to a shop and what can I use in the meanthime untill I can get to a shop. Ive only got some nice quality live rock,with no corals or any other anenomes and stuff. -

Keep reading to see why Bulk Reef Supply says they heart Elos fish food and the English translation of Fanua Marin’s feeding manual.

Need to get wave makers can somebody advise how many or what size pumps is needed. How much water would i need to move around the tank in an hour. -

Cirrhilabrus earlei, earl’s fairy wrasse, is a very beautiful labrid which is primarily found in and around Palau, well outside of the normal marine ornamental collection areas and therefore extremely rare in the trade. Earl’s fairy wrasse was only discovered and described in the last decade so not many people know about this species yet, but that didn’t stop the fairy wrasse enthusiast Jim Gryczanowski from getting him some.
It’s important to note that Jim had to get more than one Earl’s fairy wrasse to elicit this kind of flashing behavior from Earl’s fairy wrasse, because the subdominant female stimulates the male into the nuptial, flashing coloration depicted in the video. To our knowledge, the incredible flashing coloration of Cirrhilabrus earlei has never been documented to this degree, and we thank Jim for sharing his love of fairy wrasses through this awesome video.

Scrubber advice

I'm starting to entertain the idea of a scrubber but space is tight. There is roughly 400mm x 200mm space available in the sump. Is there a way to make it silent? If not, should I rather look at an external bucket design? How would you feed water to the bucket and then feed back to the tank? -

auto kalk stirrer/ top up

hey guys
decided it's nigh time i added kalk to the mix. here are my plans, tell me what you think:
the idea is that the high pressure valve is controlled by a float switch in the sump. when sump level drops, RO turns on and begins filling the bucket. a timer will then control the feed pump which forces water into the reactor, stirring the kalk and forcing water out the outlet and into the sump. the valve between the feed pump and reactor will control how fast water is added to the sump. hopefully i can match this to the rate of evaporation :)
at the moment this is just an idea. reading up on everyone's different methods of dosing and trying to come up with something that will suit me. I am looking for a good combination between automation and simplicity.

All my goldies died

Hi chaps,
I have lately been topping up mt system with RO ware in a 25 litre drum containing at most 10 teespoons of slaked lime (chemist grade) I let it run into the DT very slowly but even if I let the undisolved lime settle for an hour or so, the water still goes cloudy. I had 4 goldies and theay have now all die and I beleive it is as aresult of the topping up method described. The slurry method would surely also have the same effect on the system, so can anybody comment as to the possibe reasons for the goldies dying and a more safer way to top up considdering the less hardy stock one might have?

First time I've seen this, a really bright green pod on my glass, has anybody else got these? Pretty cool to see the eggs as well.
As you can see, he really stands out from the crowd :p

My Marine Upgrade

Hi ppl,
Where do I start?
First of all thanksani @xtreme for getting me into this wonderful hobby.
On the moment I have a small(very small 28L) marine tank. So I tried marines out and I'm loving it, so next step, bigger tank
Some info about the setup.
Display tank is still under construction, and will be finished by the weekend(can't wait).
The DT will be 630x400x400 (LxWxH water level)
With the sump I'm not to sure yet, was thinking 600x300x350(LxWxH), any suggestions? The space in the cupboard is 800x300(LxW)
Will be using a TS1 skimmer.
Lighting will be a reeftek(i think) unit.
I have +/- 5kg of LR (will be getting more, but not sure how much?)
And still thinking of what I'm going to keep, so far I'm just going the softies and a few fish route.
Have a small list for the fish and inverts:
1x Ocellaris Clown
4x Blue-green Chromis
1x Yellow Watchman Goby
1x Rippled Coral Goby
1x Sixstripe Wrasse
1x Hermit Crab

Need help with the sump design

Decided to make a separate thread for this as it will get the right response
What I want is:
1st - Skimmer
2nd - Return
3rd - Fudge.
Im not fussy whether the return or fudge is 2nd. This is a design I got from Melevsreef.com - Welcome!
Its Skimmer on the Left, Return in the middle and Refugium on the Right.
I have a std 4ft tank for the sump. Can you guys help me out with the design or is this ok?

I have added 2 mullets to my tank that we caught in Ramsgate. I just want to say, they are awesome. They clean the glass of your tank 24/7. Where I always cleaned the tank about 2 times a week, I only clean it now, maybe once a week.

Urgent help needed Red Algae

Hi I have red algea or whatever you call it. It is like a slime and only on the sand. If you "syphin" it with a thin pipe it looks like a blanket. I have spoken to our pet shop and they have recommended Clorifinical(hope the spelling is ok) You dissolve 1 capsule per 12 liter of water. I have done that. It is still coming back after a few days. So I have done it again, wait 3 days and done it again. It went well for about 2 weeks. But it is back. Does anyone know if this medicine is any good, and not please what must I do. I really need help. My tank is 535 liters. All my tests is looking ok. I have an algea activator and also a nitrate activator installed.
