Fish Auto Feeder

Is there any gurru out there that uses one of these and how reliable are they.
I know some of them feed up to 4x per day but don't know for how many days on end. Some work with air, batteries, 12v and 220v ect.
There must be a SLIM PIET on this forum that can build one that can feed up to 2 weeks non stop, i'll even be a sponsor to get this thing going, just think :thumbup:MASA FEEDER:thumbup: sounds good hey.

Hi guys Im looking for ANY LPS frags. I would love to buy LPS at my LFS but unfortunately my budget dose not allow for those prices. That is why Im looking for frags. I have a frogspawn and a candy cane. Can anyone help me please?

Urgent help needed Crab picked up in Jozi parking lot

Hi there,

Last night I was on my way home when I spotted a crab in the parking lot. This in the middle of Jozi is a little puzzling. It's body is a little smaller than a grown man's fist. Anyone with some idea where it could have come from??

Didn't think it would make it alone. So I took it with me. Could some one identify the species?

Any advice on what to do, how to take care of it, etc would be appreciated. I know nothing about taking care of a crab.

Hi all,

Well I collected my new tank from East London over the weekend. What a drive!

Now I am just waiting for the new stand to be completed. Holding thumbs for Friday.

In the meantime I have to keep the LR going...

Also testing my new DNW250

As soon as the stand arrives the tank will be carried inside and then the fun starts. The tank is 2080(l) x 700(w) x 700(h).

I so often find confusion on this topic.

People quote that you need 60x volumn or 100x to successfully maintain sps etc.

Its horribly misleading when one considers the different pumps we may use, especially in larger tanks.

I have a 5000l system. On one side where most if the pumps are hidden I have 18500l of flow produced by a selection of pumps such as aquamedic 3500 or 6500. These are centrifugal based uplift pumps, not the newer technology flow or stream type prop pumps.

These pumps producing 3.7x volumn:eek: keep the large SPS population in my tank very happy.

On the other side, just to fill in a gap or two I have two 15000lph flow/stream pumps.

You might think that the 30 000l produced by the flow pumps must be far more significant than the 18 500l on the other side. You would be very wrong. :tt2:

Switch off the flow pumps and you will be hard pressed to notice, hell days have gone by before I've realised that these pumps had been turned off.

Switch off the main flow of 18 500l and the tank goes dead. Only the tiniest flicker of life from the flow pumps tell you that the power hasn't tripped entirely.

So how does something almost half the volumn of of the second massively eclipse the second.

Simple. Energy. Assume that you put 22watts into a flow /prop/stream type pump designed to produce 15000lph. Maybe it is 95% efficient (ie 95% of the energy fed into it produces water flow) so nearly all of the 22w go into water movement.

A 65watt centrifugal pump may also be 95% efficient but only be rated to produce 3500lhp. This one will make much more impact at churning water around, because the jet created moves the water around it as well, getting it all going.

How? Simple. 65watts of energy is a lot more than 22watts. No matter how good German engineers are they have not found a way to produce more energy from a machine than is put in.;)

Stream type pumps are great, they manage to move large volumns of water around without undue stress on corals placed quite close to them. This is why they were designed. The close proximity of everything in the average aquarium makes them very useful.

But the way that they produce circulation is so different to other pumps that it leads to some confusion. X volumn becomes meaningless. Try comparing a CLS to stream pumps using x volumn for true meaningless information.

We should rather use watts per liter if we want more acurate comparisons or ways to help each other regarding flow. :)

Urgent Help Needed!!!! Coral Dying!!!

Hi Guys

I recently bought Sinularia (Yellow Corn flour Leather Polyp) and Sarcophyton (Leather Stone Mixed Colors). i dripped them for 45min-60min before adding them to my tank. the Sinularia is already dead and my Sarcophyton is sarting to fade, you can see the flesh of the coral has this dying white color and all its polyps are retracted.

my water conditions is as following:
PH: 8.7
Ammonia: 0.3
Nitrates: 20ppm
Phosphates: 0.25
Flow: 41 (working to get it lower)
Lighting: 2x 10000K white T5's & 2x coral blue T5's

I added them to my tank on Friday, unfortunately the Sinularia only made it untill Sunday and i had to take it out. ( fear of Ammonia Spikes)

yesterday afternoon I saw that my Sarcophyton is showing the same symptoms as the Sinularia did. I started yesterday to target feed the coral with brightwell aquatics Restore (0.5ml in fear of over feeding my system)

what can i do to help this little creature & how harmfull will it be to my other corals whe it dies????

Good day all! im glad tobe part off this forum, i've aways been intrested in aquariums even more so with my son starting to fish with me its tradition
now to set up a tempirary marine tank in our december holidays. we specialy
catch tiny fish of all sorts and also keep small octopus and anemones succesfully
all of witch we release back into the ocean at the end of our break. im now thinking
of starting up a permanent tank. will be posting some pics. later.

I have managed to find a cheap (ish) supply of acrylic.

4mm clear sheet 3050mm x 2050mm @ R260 excl VAT total of 6.2m

I only want a piece 2050 x 1050

this leaves a piece 2050 x 2000 up for grabs at R260 pm2 ex vat

HELP!! DIY Reactor

Guys... I have recently added NP Reducing bio pellets to the tank. Read the instructions and it said one can even keep it in a sock in the column, and then I thought I wanted a bit better, so I built a small reaction chamber for it.

Thing is, the water comes in on one side, and then exits the other side, but this just pushes the bio pellets to the other side of the reactor in one mass, without them "swirling" around...

Then just to make sure this would be fine, I emailed the manufacturer, who then said they have to move around, otherwise they will just become on solid as the bacteria start growing...

So, I really do not want to spend R1000 for a PhosGuard reactor etc.

How do I build a DIY reactor that will let the pellets swirl around? I have searched the web but there is no real step for step instructions. I also (to be honest) do not really understand the working behind a reactor to make the pellets swirl and move.

Can onyone help urgently please, I have to have this sorted out TODAY before those bio pellets set into one block...
