Hi to all,
I've been playing around with thi hobby for about a year now, bought a matured system from a friend. I have decided to go Fish Only now, can you guys tell me what is the Pro's and Cons of going fish only?
-
Hi guys
I've been on this site for about a month now. And I've been doing alot of reading. I ended up being bitten by the bug quite big and resulting from that, I decided to go look to get myself a tank!!! So as any other newbie I did alot of research and looked around until I thought I found myself a good deal. I ended up finding a secondhand tank with lights, skimmer...the works, for a really attractive price. Well, thus far I'm glad with the equipment I got with it, with exception to the tank and the LR.
To give a more detailed rundown on what I got, here is a better list:
- 4ft tank (1220L x 460w x 660h)
- stand
- about 30 - 40 kilos LR
- aragonite substrate
- sump consisting of 2 dustbins (the actual sump cracked a long time ago so this was his replacement)
- Lights with a commercially bought fixture, 2 MH lamps and T5 flourescent lights
- Dymax skimmer (how good is this brand?)
- wavemakers and powerheads
- return pump
- 4 heaters
- transport and installation of the tank
- small hospital tank
- some medicine and pet food
- about 10 - 15 20L drums
Ok so now that all the items bought have been laid out, let me begin the story. I found an ad on gumtree about this tank. I emailed the dude and we made a plan to go see it. When I saw it, it was nice. no scratches on the tank, fish were swimming happy and the lighting and water quality looked good. The system had 2 dustbins which I wasnt a fan but I figured I can design and build my own sump...so that was sorted. I also noticed he had like these brown things that were everywhere in the tank (I didn't think of it as anything at the time). and had a slight cyano and GHA issue. But i figured it was still a good deal despite the cons. Then a few days before the purchase I ended up browsing MASA and finding out that the brown things were actually aiptasia. And reading about it got me a bit worried. But i figured that since I struck a deal with the guy and requested that the fish be sold (I couldn't take care of his fish, was more afraid i'd hurt them at this stage) that it would be wrong of me to back out of a deal
So I did more research and found out that aiptasia can be dealt with using peppermint shrimp of certain types of fish (awesome!). On the day we shipped it and the guy set up the tank and everything else which was great too. So everything was still going ok, figured I have a plan on how to tackle all the obstacles and I'll do great. I decided to clean the tank, and get it prepped for cycling. Halfway through the process of filling the tank I noticed that there is a chip by the base of the tank. The glass is not particularly thick (5mm) so now I'm worried that the tank may burst due to the chip. Secondly when the dude was emptying out the LR, he plucked out all the aiptasia from the tank. which has now created quite an outbreak. They like everywhere!!! I spoke to the guy about the tank chip and he said he got it like that 5 years ago. He been running it ever since and it's never given a problem. My problem is that if it does crack, I could loose alot of furniture and electronics due to water damage (its in my lounge) So what I expected to be a great start to a new hobby turned out to be a case of stress, mixed emotions and nights where I sleep with "one eye open" (due to the chip). Is this a case to be worried about?

This is something I've wanted do do for quite some time now. Setup a Nano tank!
I now have a Nano tank, a Boyu TL-450. a small 40-50L tank. Perfect for the little experiment I want to run.
So my plan is to create a little Live Rock filtered system with extra Carbon and some Purigen in the filter compartments. The majority of the filtration will be done by Live rock. I will take some pieces out of my main tank and break them up small enough to add to the filtration compartment. My plan is to add about 6kg's of really good quality LR to the main Display. I'll see what it looks like and see if the display is too full or too empty, and take it from there...
I know there are heating problems with the TL450, so I have completely removed the Heater from the tank. I'll see how the temps fluctuate and take it from there... I'll pop the heater back in when it gets too cold in winter, but till then, I'll see how it goes.
So the plan:
Zoas and Rics... That's it!
I love the look of Sexy Shrimp, so I'll see about those, and some small Gobies. That's the plan!
So I'll be uploading pics of this tank as I go. I haven't started yet, but I have the tank, so I guess that's the start.
Updates coming soon!!!

i was given a bunch of rock this weekend but i think it has bryopsis on it. how do i get rid of it? if i put all the rock in a drum and leave it in the dark with a power head for a couple of weeks will all the bryopsis be killed?

I have two under 5's.
As we are teaching them from small to be aquarists we name the fish correctly. Unfortunately they have decided to change the names to what they understand or grasp the names
Lion Fish - Renamed Dwagon fishes (Xander 3) (dragon fish)
Mandarin - wainbow (Timothy 5) (rainbow fish)
Mandarin - Paddavis (Xander 3)
Flaming Goby - sword fish (Timothy 5)
2 x clowns - naturally nemo but MARVIN also got named.
Gotto love these kids:thumbup:

Hi all
I just recently regenerated my Purigen by soaking it in bleach and then using Seachem's Prime to remove the chlorine, etc from the Purigen. Afterwards I soaked the Purigen in RO water and then placed it into an internal filter in my tank. After I did that my protein skimmer has been foaming like crazy and I have foam in my sump.
I read afterwards that some slime coat products can have this effect on the skimmer because it changes the surface tension of the water. And Seachem's Prime does contain slime coat in it.
I switched off my skimmer yesterday to stop it from foaming up the entire sump cabinet. Is there anything I can do to stop it from producing excessive foam? I've even turned it down to it's lowest possible setting and it didn't help. It's a Reeftek TS1.
Any advice would be appreciated.
B.

Hi all,
been having some issues with my seachem salt.
I buy the 6.2kg bags of seachem reef.
Last 4 bags I bought did not disolve completely, leaves a fine residue, but not powder like, feels like small (<1mm) 'balls' when you rub it between your fingers, about one handful of this is left each time.
I mix 2kg salt to 50litre water (1.026 salinity), I heat the water to 26degC and have a 6000l/min sunsun pump in the drum to stir things up and it is mixed for 24hours before use.
Each time I do a wc I have to filter the water when pumping it to my system else the white stuff ends up in my system and settles where-ever the flow is the least.
Any ideas why ? am i doing something wrong ?

Auto Temp Controller DIY
Yay...finally i've managed to install the holy grail (well as far as I am concerned). Ever since I started this hobby, keeping the tank at the right temp has been a battle. After many experiments I settled on computer fans set on a timer that come on with the lights. I have them switching on and off every 15 minutes during this cycle in order to combat as much evaporation as possible however on cold days or even normal days the tank still runs relatively cold at around 24.5. Along with the fans switching on and off, you are obviously making the heaters work harder as well as its a constant battle between heating and cooling which sucks electricity. Obviously a chiller would be 1st prize but at the cost its just too much.
So I have been searching for a cheap temp control solution to do the job. I found what I was looking for on fish-street and it ended up costing around R220 for the controller. Here's the rest of the DIY.
Here's the controller.
Now I need something to attach the unit to my cabinet. This stuff is in close competition to eggcrate and cable ties. R9 at Checkers!
Trying to make sense of the chinese wiring diagram.
It was actually pretty simple once I got my head around it. Drinking on medication doesnt help your brain much when it comes to these sorts of things. Had to use normal twinflex cable as the units connections are just too small for normal electrical cable.
and...
The final install.
I replaced the 2 computer fans with a small mini fan. it runs on 240v so no fiddling with transformer, the unit is sealed completed so hopefully the salt stays at bay (hopefully) and suprisingly it pumps out a fair amount of air silently, much better that the whine coming from the PC fans
I must say that so far I have been impressed with the results. I have the fan switches on in the lower edges of 27 and switches off at the higher edges of 25 so i'm hoping to average 26 constant a lot more efficiently than before. The temp controller also doubles up as a digital temp guage. Not bad for R200
I think i'll more than likely need to experiment with the temp controller settings as you can vary the control quite a lot. I'll need to spend the day at home to see how it fairs.

I'm seriously concerned and would just like your professional opinion of this tank design can it withhold the water volume????
This is a rimless tank with 10mm glass, dimensions 90X60X40 cm's.
Will this hold the water volume without braces etc? Just started filling this weekend and had a major scare, now i'm a bit cautious ????

Guys
Took the big step on Saturday, and bought an internal cone bubble blaster 3000. Impressive piece of skimmer. Only problem - noise. My sump is fairly deep, so had to build an eggcrate stand for it. I do not hear the pump, but (guessing here) around the bubble plate upwards in the skimmer itself. Sounds like a low growling noise. Anybody had something like this before? What can be done?
Thanks
Chris

Morning
My aptasia problem is starting to bother me and chemical and zapper do not seem to be cutting them back enough.
I think I am going to have to try a CPB and some Peppermint shimp when I can find some large enough.
My problem is I have a Yellow, a Sailfin and Regal tang. The Yellow is a bit of a bully. The others are chilled.
I am worried about adding the CPB. I really don't want the poor guy to get hurt.
Obviously lights out when adding.
I have heard a smaller specimen would not be to much of a threat and be left alone.
A mirror on the side of the tank to keep the tangs busy.
Any other ideas?

This is the rock that I picked up at the beach which looks the same as the base rock sold at the petshop. Can I use this?

Okay, so I got a bit if an algae buildup and was advised to get more flow.
I have a sunsun dual at the moment flowing at 6000 L/H. My hammer coral, zoas, shrooms, gsp and finger leather were doing quite well. I added a 5000 L/h single sun-sun this weekend and everything went to hell... the hammer, the zoas and gsp decided not to make an appearance....Whats more is that the sunsun dug itself a neat sandbank overnight.
I then moved the flow upwards towards the surface and now I've got a tsunami. The clowns are swimming overtime trying to keep with the flow....
Can someone advise on the correct amount of flow for a 4ft, direction, etc... ?

Well, after my decision a few weeks ago, to purchase new LR, becuase my tank has been running a few years and could do with some fresh rock and a bit of a re-arrange.I went and purchased some mushroom rock which it turn out was from Figi, 3 Mantis Shrimps later, one of which still resides in my TL-550 and taunts me in the early hours of the morning. I manage to get two of them into a spare tank, but at the cost of two of my new LR. I found myself faced with a dismantled set up, everything out of place and a need to now put everything back into place. So pay day comes along, I find myself a funky little rock, Which Steven and the crew kindly took to my car in a big polystyrene box.
Bennie and I get home, he carts the huge box into the house, places it beside the nano, and the damn thing starts ticking the minute he opens the lid. He shakes his head, gives off a big sign and says woman, I'm off to play PS3! You can put it in the Mantis tank. I give up. So another pay day, another mantis! I think its time to convert the big Tropical tank in the lounge and start a Mantis Sanctuary, but only for the Figi Mantis, it turns out they only grow to 29mm. And they don't fight as long as they get fed daily and have their own exclusive rock, and at their size, I am able to feed by hand (ignorance is bliss, haven't been zapped yet ) so at least I get some interaction with them. And its nice to see the little eyes flittering about as they see me.
Now just to get Ben to approve.

can anyone help me to tell me how to post a pic with a thread

Hello ;)
I am building a new aquarium tank as per below:
length - 48in (121.92cm)
width - 18in (45.72cm)
height - 24in (60.96cm)
I will be using 10mm glass, with euro bracing on top and bottom.
The aquarium tool calculator says that I have a safety factor of 2.5 for the above dimensions.
Is the safety factor calculated with the aquarium completely filled with water?
I plan to have only 50cm of water in my aquarium, the remaining empty space will be hidden by the top cover...
If I calculate with 121.92cm x 45.72cm x 50cm(height of water), I have a safety factor of 4 with 10mm glass.
Grateful if you could give your opinions and advices...
Thanks a lot,
Rishi.

Hi All,
I've finally upgraded from my boyu TL-55 to a rimless 400L.
So excited, starting this from scratch and hopefully omit all mistakes if learn from before.
Just staring to fill her with RO water and synthetic salt (Aquamedic)
Could I please get some pointers for all you guys as to how to go along, best prices etc.
To start, I'm continuing with left over AQUAMEDIC salt, should I change the brand or continue with this brand in my new reef?
2nd question is to what/where to get good/recommended aragonite substrate ?
3rdly, do you know anyone selling FIGI LR, i was to go to LFS as a very last resort ;-)
Your help very much appreciated.
Will give tank specs as we go along ...
Below are some pics but still very virgin :-)

Hey guys,
Just wanted to open up a thread. I'm not sure if this is in violation of MASA policies re sponsors etc. However I read through the other threads here and I don't think this is out of line. If so I apologise, and mods can delete. I know some of you have bought online (@
chikaboo), and its often a cost effective way to go - even with shipping.
So, what are some of the good sites that are affordable even including shipping? So far, the best I've come across is
Fish Street Store Complete high quality Aquarium solutions from Fish Street Store. In particular I've been looking at their "aqua japan" 6xT5 unit. Nice looking fixture and very decent price. Seems like most buyers are happy with the unit on the the US nano-reef site.
Aqua Japan 6 Tube 24Inch T5HO Aquarium Lighting
Including shipping:
Just over R1500 for the 36" Unit,
Just over R2100 for the 48" Unit.
Apparently both come with 3x10k and 3x20k globes, although from the reviews on the site it has shipped with sub-standard globes before. This doesnt seem to be a huge issue tho. The prices are certainly tempting!
Another site is
welcome to deal-express.com, quality cellphones for best prices! - they offer free shipping on everything, but they have very little aquarium supplies (mostly gadgets and junk) and it can take a few months for stuff to get to you!! And they only accept paypal payments.
I've also looked at ali-express, which is a chinese wholesale site and they have some okay-priced oceanson look-alike clones etc, but read some horror reviews of these things melting! I'm sure its better to buy the originals here where you have some backup. Price wise still not close to above...
Anyone else? Reputable e-bay sellers etc?

hi, hope you are all doing well. as a new member I will bug the pro's a lot for advice and I really apreciate all your help. there is algea starting in the tank now and a lot of small shrimp like creatures and of coarse the brisle worms. I am doing weekly water tests and need to ask about the readings. i am doing weekly tests using the tropic marin kit. the results as follows. amonia week1 0.05, week2 0.01 and week 3 0.01. nitrite week 1 0.02, week2 0.02 and week3 0. nitrate week1 5 week2 2 and week3 2. kh week1 8 week2 9 and week3 8. phweek1 8.2, week2 8.4 and week3 8.4. the temp settled at 25.8 and is staying constant.
skimmer size 93x87x373--640 lt/hr. should I fill the filter system with live rock in the back? will the live rock be fine with little light? there is only light comming in from the fan holes and it is in a darkish area in the house.

Hi ppl
I need help.
I saw last night that my false percula clowns has black spots on them.
I googled this and saw a few cases of black spots.
They say it can be black ich or it can be that the fish are stressed.
I see if its black ich the fish dont eat and rub against rocks and so on.
My clowns do eat and the dont rub against anything.
But my local convicts do rub against everything but they do eat.
Ive also seen that they say i you see the black spots move over the body of the fish and there not stationary then it is black ich.
Ive not looked at the clowns for so long to see if the spots move or not.
I dont have a QT tank and dont know what medicine to give.
What can this be?
Must i be worried or not?
PLEASE HELP PPL.

Good day all.
I have a 600l tank. Currently have maroon clown, one spot fox face and a PB.
I am looking to get some more life stock. Want to get some more tang species. Can anyone help me? Would these fish be compatible or would I just make a mess to put them together?
Thanx

Looking for a stand alone skeemer....
-
ok here is what i need to know.
ive added a skimmer to my cycling live rock tank.
for about 2 hours my skimmer sucked out dark green skim,
then just stopped.
Has the skimmer stopped because there is nothing left to skim?
there is no bio load at all . just the live rock.
I have a basic understanding. but just want to find out if im correct

Hi guys. My friend and I were at the beach last weekend and caught 2 of these black tangs. They are quite common and have seen quite a few in the rock pools. I couldn't really get a good pic cos he darts away everytime I try to take a pic. It is full black with a neon blue stripe at the end of the dorsal and anal fins. I will post a pic when i manage to take one.;)

Can I please have your opinion on this skimmer for a 500L DT + 200L sump SPS setup?

Guys...
I am not basing this on any research I have done, but rather on personal experience. Maybe someone can assist me that have read anything about this;
As many people might know, gorgonians tend to "strip" tissue when transported or if it is dying. What happens then is you only see the black skeleton of the gorgonian, and no polyps are visible. With many of the gorgonians I have kept, I have noticed that as the gorgonian is growing back this tissue, it would have the very end polyps extend treamendously at the end of the flesh towards the area it is growing to.
Now my thinking (no researched evidence) is that this is a measure the coral takes to "clear" a path for itself, thus as with many LPS, it uses sweeper tentacles in order to get rid of other coral that might be in the way of it growing.
I have seen this on all three gorgonians in my tank... Any thoughts?
Here is a picture:

NPX BIOPLASTICS
Two Little Fishes NPX Bioplastics™ - Nitrate and Phosphate Reducing Biodegradeable Polymer Pellets
NPX Bioplastics® granular plastic media made from biodegradable polymers. For use in a fluidized reactor or in a media bag within any filter. The slow release of organic food from these plastics promotes the development of bacteria that assimilate nitrate and phosphate. These bacteria can be harvested by protein skimmers, so that the nitrate and phosphate levels are naturally reduced. The bacteria are also a food source for filter-feeding invertebrates such as corals, clams, sponges, and feather dusters.

Hi Guys
I just read the post on the mandarin, and now I am a bit worried. My mandarin looks happy but the tank is only 7 weeks old. The live stock and LR are more than a year old though. Mandarin seems to be nibbling all the time on the LR as well as the sand. Should I be worried?
Also the Aurora red base anemone have been closed for the past two days.

Finally I can post pictures of my tank. A good buddy of mine gave it to me. I revamped the sump and had the tank running for two weeks without any gravel or livestock in it. Then I switched the pumps off, because of a lack in cash for liverock and corals.
Then another buddy of mine asked, if I could accommodate his livestock as he has to move. So I quickly switched the two pumps on, washed some gravel and arragonite and put it in. He brought all his rockwork, then all his corals and then all his fish. Everything happend within a week. I moved the few corals and a few fish I had in my cube into the new system and shut the cube off. Now it is running for a couple of weeks and I am quite happy with the result.

Hi Brenda
My tank is being around around 9 months and 3 weeks ago added a rose bubble tip. initally after adding to tank, using a 4 hour drip method, I added the nennie with the live rock it was attached to from the LFS. The nennie moved under a ledge at the back of the tank after the first day and has settled there since.
She has been feeding well and I have spent 20 minutes afterwards observing. My problem is that my cleaner shrimps now steal her food and sometimes my wrasse. The nennies position is such that it would be impossible to cover her during feeding without trying to discomfort her by re-arranging. The other option is too reove my shrimps, or please say my nennie will sting and eat them soon, just kidding. Your advise is much appreciated.
My tank parramters are
Ammonia, Nitrates, Nitrites and Phosphates are = 0
Temp = 25-26 degrees, SG -1.26
Lighting 4 x t5 54 W.
Food = Nennie - lance fish (alternate days)
General population = misture of krill, mysis, mixed marine, flakes and brine shrimp (alternately) Feeding only every 2 days
Also add plankton once a week

Currently has a bit of white spot( can see in the photos),as a result of the harassment, which im treating her for in quarantine..

Hi!
I bought my first 2 fish this weekend, a Spotted Hawkfish and a Dwarf Fuzzy Lionfish.
The hawkfish is happy as hell and swims around, or should I say swim and chills around the whole tank.
The dwarf lion is kinda shy, sits on a rock and moves every now and then. Now I know that he was eating at the LFS I bought him from, they suggested I feed him Lance Fish.
I got some, but he has not eaten a bit since vryday when I got him. I dont know if he does his swimming thing after lights out maybe, but everywhere I read it says to get them to eat is difficult.
He still looks nice and fat though, and seems very relaxed - should I be worried at all ?
-
Pls help, my fish keep on getting white spots. I've treated the tank with Kent RXP and Odi Medic Coral. Does any one have any alternative advise.

Hi Guys, looking for someone who can help with a ball of chaeto for my sump to help with nutrient export. Thx:thumbup:
-
Hey guys
For a while now some of my corals have been a bit worse for wear. My alk and calcium were a bit low, so got that sorted with randy's recipe 2, and now maintain levels with kalk. Things did not improve, so I re-introduced carbon to the system, no effect. Also checked salinity, nothing there.
I'm now thinking that perhaps my lights need replacing (T5's in conjunction with leds - long story, but at the moment I am waiting for the bulk of my leds to arrive, so only a few running at present) the T5 bulbs are about 6 months old, so probably are due for replacement.
Last night I checked my nitrate - still had the kit from when I started up 18 months ago, not used it since the cycle was complete. To my shock and horror it's reading around 50ppm!!!! Think I've found my problem...
So... immediately cleaned my scrubber (normally scrape it clean every 2 weeks or so, must admit I've been a bit slack with it in the last month or so). Cleaned out skimmer cup as well. Had some prodibio start-up from when I moved house, so dosed some of that. Also increased the flow over my scrubber slightly.
This morning, no change in reading.
I normally feed twice a day, because I have a school of goldies - had them for about 6 months.
Tonight I will check my scaping for dead spots and accumulation of krap etc... will also be cross-checking readings with another test kit, seeing as mine is quite old.
FWIW, my scrubber is single sided with a warm white energy saver globe driving it. Growth on it has slowed somewhat lately, leading me to think that nitrate and phosphate levels were low, hence me being slightly slack in cleaning it... although that is probably more due to laziness if I'm honest.
My DSB is around 16cm deep, and looks fairly healthy. Lots of pods running around etc. When I feed, it's generally 2-3 pinches of a flak/pellet mix. Every 3 days or so I defrost a marine mix instead, and generally give around 1-2 teaspoons.
Also running a TS2 skimmer, slightly wet.
So.. any ideas of what else I can do, or what the cause may be?

at least the worms is something to look at at the moment. on my tank the filter system sit at the back of the tank. when I top up with ro water, do i need to fill in the display area or in the filter area? I have added 2 fans to help with temp controll so the evaporation rate is quite high. at the moment it is still cycling so I only run the lights for about 3 hrs per day. the temp setteled at about 26 degrees. is this right? do I need to top up with ro on a daily basis? or rather every other day? then another question. it is a 102 lt tank. i have 9.5 kg live rock in the display, 2.5 pourus rock in the filter that will go live in 6 months and 1.5 kg rough coral in the filter. I also have about 1 kg porcelain noodles and a bag of carbon. how many creatures can i put in the tank? the first thing will be the cleaning crew. how many and what types.

Hi Schuan and everybody,
Can anyone tell me what would be required to convert a swimming pool into a "fish tank"?
I suppose one would need to add a pool thermostat?
How can one change the pool filter to be suitable for filtering aquarium water?
What else would be needed? :(
Can anyone shed some light on this? :whistling:
Kind Regards
Bryn

Ok so i suppose its official since the glass has been recieved and the tank partially put together,
stand will arrive next week and filter will be planned soon. i have also recieved my new skimmer so im pretty sure now is a good time to start a thread on it all.
Tank: 1.5m x .800 x .650 (water level .580) out of 15mm normal float glass
Stand: 1.5 x .800x .760 out of 38 x 38 square tubing to be cladded out of shutterply
Skimmer: Skimz Sm202 external
filtration:
No DSB, i have always thought them to be a waste of time as they can hardly ever be in the correct proportioned to properly service the system capacity suffieciently,
LR: I will seed the tank with the LR i have left, unfortunatley i had to dry allot of my old stuff out. as we moved and just dident have the place or time to try save it.
Flow: 2 x Tunze 6105 on 7095 controller set on a pulse mode
Return: Main return pump will be a OR3500 i may upgade to a OR6500 in time im trying to get 1 pump to run the majority of the system, feed chiller, skimmer, etc etc
Lighting: Considering T5 for my lighting this time but still have my 2 x 16k 150w Hailide + 2 54w T5 unit so will get that going in the meanwhile.
Aim of the tank: everyone is so sps orientated and to be honest they dont appeal to me in the way they do to others, I prefer seeing the effects of flow on coral and LPS does this for me.
I intend to go mostly LPS dominated with a few softies and a few hardy sps, and a clam or 2. I would like to create a pinnacle scaping wnd attack my frogspawns and hammer corals to create a branching bonsai effect with a lot of swimming space for fish.
Im trying to very electricity consious this time.

Firstly i want to say thank you to all of you for helping me out and giving me some advise.
Now here is my situation
I have managed to secure some tanks :
1. BOYU - +- 300l tank (Not sure exactly the ltrs)
2. Custom Made +- 250l Round tank, with 15mm, i think, glass. (Will try and get some pics up soon)
3. A Small +-150l standard glass tank.
4. A TetraTek 1000l Canister Filter thing.
I haven't bought the items yet, but the guy wants R5000 for the lot.
Advise please....Is this a good price for a second hand lot? Cos i have seen the Boyu Tank go for R4500 on its own and the Filter for R2800.
So i'm assuming that i am getting a steal here......
What i was planing is keeping the Boyu and the small glass tank and selling of the Round one. use the small tank as a sump and not sure about the filter....
On another note.....I poped into Northlands Pets this morning, and was once again told this time by the owner of the store himself, that i don't need the whole sump setup...
I could just go for the filter and a bio filter in the tank....but after reading up on these forums, i noted that a skimmer is most important....Is the bio filter similar to a skimmer?
NEED HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am tearing my hair out @ this....and i'm bald....;)

I will be cycling a tank for the first time in years and want to use Start up which has the bacteria to colonise the tank as well as some plant extract to bind the ammonia. It says that one can add fish after 12 hours of adding the product which I have no intention of doing but I would like to get opinions on the product.

Hi there guys and girls.
So over the past two weeks I added some corals (Zeo`s) I bought from my LFS:thumbup: I was busy this weekend doing a cleanup and water change and noticed that my clam was behaving strangely, opening up and then suddenly closing quickly,by sunday morning it noticed the clam looking very bad, now not opening up and i started to smell an odour, I then decided to put it in the sump because of my tangs starting to pick on him, I then discovered a tiny crab coming out from the clam,by sunday night the clam was dead,:( so i removed him to prevent a ammonia and nitrite spike, could this little crab do so much damage and what is the proper procedure when one adds new coral to your tank. all my parameters are in check, i do weekly tests.
Your input will be appreciated.
Thanks.

These nudibranches are commonly seen feeding on algae at Nahoon reef. This one was about 25cm long! It should be able to sort out the algae in an average 6ft tank in about a day or so. Maybe we should have one per city, and pass it from reefer to reefer?

Evening, hope someone can help. I noticed in my green carpet coral (do not really know the correct name) something that appears for a few seconds and then retreat. It almost look like a long thin feathery white claw.
I know aptaisia but is it possible that this can be something similiar?
(sorry I do not have a photo).

Hi there everyone,
Well my tank is going along and I really want to add a shrimp of some sort to it. I don't have many fish (1 x juvenile Lion Fish and 1 x Raccoon Butterfly). I want something that I can add more of at a later stage without causing chaos to the tank. Any ideas? :)

Hey guys, just wanna share with you all, went down to veggies pier today (durban south beach) and what an awesome dive, first I dived the reef that runs from the shore break till about 150m out, water was a bit turned up in certain spots but vis was good in most regions! Then I went to the side of the harbour wall, quite scary with those huge bolders and deep waters but awesome fish! List of fish seen: Moorish idols, coachman, different species of butterflies, plenty cleaner wrasse, box fish, puffers, wicked gobies, massive lionfish, few damsels not very pretty, chocolate dips, twin-spot damsels, semicircles, and sadly only one goldie! Got some decent specimens though:)

I've decided to downsize my tank and go with a cube which I've always wanted. The tanks specs are as follows:
Size: 1000 x 1000 x 700 ( water level at 600)
C 2 C overflow with 2 50mm overflow pipes
Lighting: 1 x 250W Geisemann 14000K SE halide in a Aquarium depot pendant
RO 2000 Internal bubble blaster skimmer rated for 1000 litres.
Base rock for aquascaping and live rock in the sump.
Sump: 1000l x 500w x 500h with ATO and dry cell for top up water.
Fiji pink aragonite substrate.
2 X MP 40W vortechs for water movement
OTP 2000 return pump
Any opinions and suggestions will be great. Looking to keep softies, LPS's, rics, a couple of SPS's in hight intesity areas.

Hey guys and girls.
I have been looking at my tank recently. I'm seriously not happy with my current lighting. I have 2 x 150watt MH and 2 x 54 watt T5's.
The T5's: 10 000K and an Actinic. (Not sure of Brand)
MH's: 14 000K. (Reeftek)
To me, the tank looks really washed out. The current bulbs are about 6 months old. I am really not happy.
What do you guys think I should change to? I was thinking either Geissman or ATI. Which one would you guys choose?
Also which colour spectums would you choose? I would love to actually get a nice T5 unit, but I can't really spend much more bucks on gear at the moment, so going with what I have, what would be the best colour combination? I'm only keeping softies at the moment and some sound, lighting advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi guys,
I go down to the aquarium every 2 weeks to collect water and do a water change.
My time is getting very limited, so I need to develop a system where I can get water once a month and store it for weekly water changes.
My idea:
Get a 2x200L tanks. The one tank will be placed at the back of my house.
The area that it will stand in never gets sunlight so should be ok. The tank will also get a power head to circulate the water.
The second tank will be used to collect water at 2 Oceans Aquarium.
The idea is to pump the water from the one tank to the other.
The distance would be about 30m
What size pump would I need? Any suggestions?
The pump should also be able to pump water from my display tank to the outside and then from the tank behind my house to the display tank for water changes.

Hi Guys
I have looking/thinking about a few options as to increase the amount of bubbles inside the reaction chamber of the skimmer.
My first decision was to add a air pump to the stock OTP pump, 2nd was to try and add a bubble plate in the bottom.
Has anyone done something like this to their skimmers?

Okay guys so decided I want a small tank that I can keep in my hostel room and easily transport to another home over holidays so here is what ive cam up with
The dimensions wil be 30*20*20 cm

Wil be using a bicolour 24w plc light
The tank wil be built from 4 mm glass
Any advice or corrections wil be gratly appreciated,or advice on filtration methods
The first thing I need help with is how strong a circulation pump wil I be needing, the tanks volume wil be 12 liters of wich aprox a third is the sump
I only want to keep some softies and mabey 2 - 3 inverts in the tank, also planing on a 3 liter (25%) waterchange every week, the tank wil be barebottom aswell (feels cleaner to me)

Hi Guys,
Im setting up a 55gallon FOWLR. Iv got +/- R2000 to spend on a skimmer. Any recommendations? TS2 vs Aquamedic Blue 1000 vs "Recommendation"? Please advise..

I've seen some Threads regarding this Topic and have then concluded that I have Base Rock...now do I HAVE to add Healthy LR to my Tank to assure diversity and prolong "longterm good health"...in a hell of a nutshell...or do I do "diversity" with Coral...? I must admitt I would have prefered Healthy LR, had I known beforehand, but all the "shops" only have Base Rock...so I assumed that's how it's done...where would I get Healthy LR...and should I rather not go that way as I'm very new to this and inexperienced regarding bacteria and other "abnormalties" I'll be facing with and trying to balance in my inexperience...
-
Hey all,
I will be getting my hands on a 1.8m tank in the near future. I would like to take most of the water in the tank with if possible.
The biggest problem is that it is about 700L... I have the means to transport that weight, I just have nothing to transport it in.
Does anyone have any solution?
I tried JoJo tanks, but they only interested in selling me a container, they won't rent me one.
Thanks!

Hello All,
I have had this Monti in my tank for abut 2 weeks now showing great growth. Tonight about 15 min after the lights went off I saw these fluffy white things suddenly appear. Don't seem to be nudis as it has been 3 hrs now and they have not moved even the slightest bit. I took these picks but they are a bit dodge. Any ideas. Oh a bit of extra info is that I just cleaned and stirred things up a bit just before the lights went off. Is it feeding?

Ever wondered why Bubble blaster skimmers are soooo expensive compared to the rest of the range? I recently came across a US site which gave the air pull numbers of the OTP pump range which powers the normal Octo skimmers could not get the figures here. Check the difference between the Bubble blasters and the OTP's:
OTP 1000 - Up to 180lph air pull - 25W or 30W
BB 1000 - Up to 600lph air pull - 13W
OTP 2000 - Up to 420lph air pull - 40W or 50W
BB 2000 - Up to 1200lph air pull - 24W
OTP 3000 - Up to 720lph air pull - 65W
BB 3000 - Up to 1500lph air pull - 35W
OTP 5000 - Up to 1800lph air pull - 120W
BB 5000 - Up to 2400lph air pull - 60W

Hi,
I've wanted to get some Macroalgae (Chaeto specifically) for my tank, but can't seem to find it at the pet stores I frequent. I've tried VIP Pets in Northgate and others in the surrounding area, and none have in stock. Do you know where I could buy some Chaeto for my marine tank?
Thanks.

Hey guys now that my tank has been running for a couple of months i am really strating to rethink its layout.
I am really looking for ideas here.
Do i keep the polaris in the tank at the back?
and secondly i want some advice with the aquascaping.
I currently have rock built up on the left and right side and the back. effectively making a c shape.
Should i keep this or should i move more towards the standard stepping up to the middle ie. inverted v shape.
am I explaining myself well enough here.
I currently have a frogspawn on one side and torch on the other, with some green zoos, maroon mushrooms, one gorgonia, pulsing xenia, pincushion and blue trumpet.
Please guys looking for some really helpfull advice here.
to give you an idea this is the shape, just moved the polaris to the back

Hi all
I put this under the DIY section as I will be diy'ing this tank shortly with a nice cabinet.
Ok Guys here is my dilemma.
I have a 4ft tank I bought 2nd hand. The previous owner cut the oneside down about 2-4 cm and added and external overflow.
See pic below.
:void(0)" target="_blank">
Now my question is. What can I do to get rid of this ??? I want to build a wooden cabinet at the bottom and a wooden cover at the top. But this external overflow looks rather daft.
I thought of the following options
1) Build new tank - Not so cool....
2) build the side up with glass and drill a hole that runs down to the sump...
Also on the lighting
I have 2 whites 39w and 2 actinic 39w all 3ft
I have another spare 39w ballast. Do I have a sale and get 54 watt ballasts with my new wooden tank hood ? Or do I just get more 39w whites and use the spare ballast ?
Any suggestions ??? Please help
My Tank Thread to give you and Idea of what it looks like in its whole...
Suggestions are very welcome !!!

hi guys.
i managed to get some macro rings from a mate of mine.Macro lenses are flippin expensive so i thought i would give it a try.
it is very tricky regarding lighting ect ect.you need lots of light and i used a very high ISO setting and a fast shutter speed.
you can only shoot in Manual mode and on manual focas.attached to the rings was my 18-55mm Nikkor lens.
the pics have nothing to do with marines...but i thought i would share them with you guys anyway;)
any advice would be appreciated:)
here the pics.
cheers.

ok so it is almost a new setup.
it started when I came back from india from a 2 week bussinus trip and found my tank green 90% of my zoas gone and 2 out of the 3 fish missing I am convinced that the "RO" water that was used for the topups by my tanksitter was nothing more than tapwater as I have never had such alge problems since using ro for topup.
havig read up on ats's I thought now was the time to build one broke out some old lace curtains and some piping from an old hydroponic setup I built and a bedside lamp anconected it to one of the pumps in my thank and wala ats

I then got a call from a mate saying that I needed to come round for dinner and to come with an empty car. when I arived he showed me his new cube and told me to please remove the old 4ft from his flat and that I could have it on semi perminant loan now I have been strugiling along with a litle 3ft with no sump so this was a nice upgrade for me so the 2 of us loaded it in my car after dinner (a corsa light) and I drove home feeling like a sardine in a tin in the morning I unpact it with the help of my gardener and set it up 3 trips to the beach later and it was full with water I let the temp stabalise and moved all my lr pumps and remaining livstock over
so after catching up on some studying I took a brak last night and built an overflow box and driled the tank actualy much easier than I thaught

hopfuly this weekend ill get a chance to plumb in the old 3ft as the sump and and top up the tank till the overflow works going to split the sump into 3 sections with first chamber for a furure skimmer second for dsb witch will have the ats over it and the 3rd for the return pump. a question I have is the pump I have currently for the return is a 1600l/h is this enough the total volume of the tank and sump will be around 300l also the bulkheads in the overflow are for 16mm pipe is this big enough for the flow should I install a seconed one?

Hey all,
I am looking for a small chiller for a 4ft tank. I don't want to pay millions.
It is to drop the temp and maintain a few degrees lower than current. My water temp rises to 28 in the day and drops to 24 at night. And that is with the heater off!
Any ideas...

Guys,
I'm a bit confused by the apparent lack of a half decent temperature probes. I hate those stupid mercury thermometers and those hideous things with the white wires that one sticks onto the tank. Is there anything nice with a good old 8 bit LED (red, green or blue) readout that one can just neatly mount on the outside of your cabinet and from a comfortable distance tell what the temperature is (day or night). There are tons of PH meters etc that offer this...

Hi all, I am looking for some nice frags, ie, yellow star polyps and sinularia, etc, easy care,
-
Well Im new here at masa ...joint a few months ago but didn't really use the sight...Here is a short intro to how I started and my set-up and thought..
I started my marine love about 13 jr ago...and still run the same tank and setup today as back then ...as with every new hobby every chance you get you get in to it...if I could I would have swam in my tank back then...I really learned the hard way back then there weren't any help like there is today (internet)...times surly have changed BUT one thing hasn't and that is THE HOW TO on a marine tank setup...For so many years now mankind has been keeping marines in their homes but mainly in labs and for research...none of these fancy equipment were available in the old days...just pump's and air systems...but they understood the term biological filtration...
When I started I wanted the whole thing..a reef tank with fish AND I WANTED IT NOW...back then I frequently visited Wim in JHB Hillbrow, weekend for weekend I would go there and admire his show tanks and live stock...he was the man back then and well known internationally for his knowledge in the upkeep of marine tanks...the other well-known shop back then was Animal World in PTA and Randburg...Any way Wim often told me first see if you can keep marine fish and look after your water parameters for a year or two...then start adding inverts starting with the hardy ones first for a another year or two...and then one by one ad your soft or hard corals...one a year... and over a few years you would have your mini reef...once you can do that you can call yourself a Ultimate REEF FISH KEEPER.
....for so many years I added stock and fish and just bought new as and when I saw something pretty...I would spend thousands in one day running from shop to shop and buy only to lose it all over the next few months, and keep spending as I loose stock to keep my tank looking gr8 and not to lose face with friends or family when they visit...as long as the tank looks good and is stocked Im happy...I still think I should have listened to Wim I could have saved so much and many....
Well that changed the day I realised this is no hobby...I woke up one day and realised that a hobby is something you do part-time and to keep busy with as and when it pleases you...fish keeping is a huge responsibility and something you must be passionate about...and you have no control over it until u respect and understand the term Biological filtration and patience...you will not be a successful marine keeper if you treat it as a HOBBY
..You see the small glass bowl in my house gets maintained by me... and the ocean by God...its that simple... Some of my fish and inverts have been in my tank for over 10 years now..
First God made the ocean then he added the fish and animals......

Hi All,
For sometime now I have wanted to set-up a tank at the office, but have always been concerned what the boss might say & also if I travel who would look after it?
Then for my long service award the company gave me a brand spanking new JBJ 28g CF Quad & one of my colleagues purchased the same tank so what to do but start a reef at the office.
Specs are as follows
Ø 28g (+- 100L)
Ø CF Quad lamp (105 watts) with moonlights
Ø Ocean Pulse Duo return pumps
Ø 150watt heater
Ø Mp 10 Vortech
Ø Battery back up
Ø ATO (being fitted this week)
Tank was set up mid January (used cured Live Rock) & just introduced my first corals & fish here are some pics (not the best, just used the local company camera)

Hi All,
For those that do not know, I had a Fatal Base crack on my 3 foot custom tank, Not really sure why, the only thing I could think that would have caused this is the crack was right underneath the heater, Anyway, this forced me to speed up my little DIY tank builing project with some spare glass I had at home.
Please note this is a bit of a rush job as I have some corals surviving in a bucket..
But these are the tank Dimensions.
DT
101L X 450W X 350H
Sump (I know its small but will build a new one at a later stage)
28L X 22W X 17H Will have a small DSB
All is built and with some advise from DallasG I managed to drill the base and built the overflow.
Will try and post pics soon.

I have a small nano that is cycling at the moment. Yesterday I saw a bristle worm that was red at both ends and black in the middle. Unfortunately when I got back with the camera he was gone, so I don't have any pics of it. All the other bristles I have seen are just plain red, is this guy cool or not?

Guys,
Lets not get into the details of WHY my tank was overfed for 4 days and instead concerntrate on how to fix it.
Somebody was tank-sitting and put in 4 x the frozen food amount I usually do daily.
What can I do to clear what will end up being some sort of cycle? So far I've dosed with stability and turned my skimmer up. I intend to do a 15% water change today and didn't feed the tank yesterday (and dont intend to today).
Anything else?
Any clue how long the after effects would last?
Thanks!

Hi Guys. I sort of got the contents of a marine tank as a gift. Basically I was thrown into the deep end, not complaining, but I have to learn FAST. I used some stuff lying around the house to quickly build a stand and then went and bought a secondhand tank (not a good idea as per post from this site). I now have a 1200 x 450 x 450 tank. its been running for a month now but as you may surmise, not without casualties. I will be asking lots of questions if you guys don't mind, but I really need to learn fast. The contents that I got given includes 4 clown fish, 2 blue fish with yellow tails, that i don't know the names of yet, two corals that I don't know the names off but both seems to be dead, one is still have some small white polyps on it so I still feed it with the hope of it recovering. I also took all the water from the original owner as well as a protein skimmer, 2 foot sump and pump. I installed tree lights in the tank two of them consisting of one side white and one side blue light. I have lost so far one clown fish and a shrimp. the shrimp was fine one morning and half an our later it was dead. I was also rudely and painfully introduced to some worms that I think is called bristle worms. The previous owner gave up on the tank after it was overgrown with a purple algae like substance. Two snails also made their appearance today one of them sitting on the coral that seems to still have a bit of live in it. I had to make a D I Y overflow system consisting of 50 mm p v c pipe. I connected a tube from this to a power head via a non return valve to make sure the overflow starts quick enough in case off a power failure. Any advice will be appreciated. I also use a canister filter that seems to leak allot.
This forum has been a lot off help all ready thanks for the help.

I bought about 6kg of rock, I am not sure where its from, its not Figi rock.I made the mistake of putting it directly into my Nano,(3yrs running now) only to discover an array of ticking and unusul creatures craling out of it.
I have two mantis shrimp, a dark redish brown and a light beige colour - one of which is still in the main tank. I have bristle worms, a fire worm, a wierd white slug with dark rust coloured spots, a wierd tiny snail with yellow and black stripes, a crab with navy and royal blue legs just like a pom pom crab, but without the anenomes and pitch black pinchers. At night I have little white earthworm type creatues coming out of the live rock and I have a few mussles living inside the caves of the rock.
I have set up my hospital tank, using sand and water from my main tank and I placed some of the LR into the tank. So far all the creatures are happy. The mantis is not agressive at all, he let's me put my hand in the tank and I use my fingers to put food by his hole, he is only an inch in size. He has not killed the wierd crab that doesn't seem to exist, cause I've googled for days to try to find pics of him.
My concern is that my hospital tank is too small, it fits on the side table next to my bed, about 45cm high and pentagon shaped. The glass is very thin. I fear the mantis may turn agressive and smash the glass. How long can I keep him in this tank? I wonder if perhpas the two are a pair, at night I hear random taps from the nano on my hubby's side of the bed, and then I hear taps from the hospital tank on my side! Can they communicate or am I just paranoid? So far no fish or crabs are missing or hurt. I am tryin really hard to remove the mantis from the Nano. Should I be concerned about the crab?
Sorry about the long essay!

hi guys, quick question ...
if you had to choose between two tanks, one a rectangular, the other a cube .... both with the exact same water volume, which one would you choose ... and why???
ps .... please assume that location and space are not an issue.
-
'Allo
Tank is now 5 weeks old ,cycle complete, only NO3 still reading but down to 10mg/L...My question is when should I do my first water change? Must there still be NO3 present for the DSB to start functioning?Only LR in tank plus a few snails. Also there seems to be quiet a bit of gunk on the substrate from the LR that was curing, must I leave it or siphon it up??:(

This is a bit about me and my Tanks.
I have only been in to Marine fish for about 18 months now and I love the hobby. In saying that I have almost thrown in the towel, let me tell you why:
You have tour tank running then you get fish some die and some live, then you find just one more fish that you like and you add it in................then all the fish get sick and die and this keeps on going like that..................until one day your world changes for the better and you decide to take the plunge and get a QT tank. Let me tell you this was the best thing I have ever done in Marine Fish keeping. There is nothing better that having fat, healthy fish in your main display tank. Too many people give up this hobby due to a fish killing the main display fish and having to start all over again. Some will say that you dont need it and that they have never had a problem and so on.............., but all it takes is that one sick fish!!! In saying that I highly recommend a QT Tank. I QT all my fish for 4 to 6 weeks. The first 2 weeks is in copper.
I have 2 x 3 foot wide tanks as you can see in the photo. They will be sold soon as I have just ordered my 5 foot wide and high open tank. Cannot wait to get it, should be getting it at the end of the month, yippy!!!! On my tanks I do a 20L water change every week with the exception of when I go away in December. I dose with Triple Buffer and Calcium in the week. The one tank runs with 4 T5 light and the other with 6 T5 light. I have put on a Main Trip Board on my tanks and control all the plugs from there, all so recommend this. I have a battery backup that runs the return pumps and one heater for each tank, plus a generator. I have a refugem in my sump with about 3 to 4 different algae plants and a light to keep it going.
If there is anyone that would like to find out more about my system and the way I run my tanks, please feel free to ask. I have also added some more up close pics from my tanks.

Today I was taking the collection cup off my skimmer to clean it but dropped it in the sump by mistake and the water went all cloudy again :( (because of the aragonite) ..
So then I walked past the tank and saw something on a rock which I didnt see this morning. I don't think is Aiptasia as it has short polyps. Did my best with the pics. Had to use my cell phone camera as it focused and the digi cam didnt want to.. lol.. any way
Its the size of a 10c coin. ITs brown and the polyps have a slight green colour
I zoomed in here
It looked like it was going to come off the rock but the flow isnt very strong where it is. Could see the foot lifting off but then it settled down
Water is on the cloudy side because I dropped the collection cup in the water :( .. Im thinking that this could be a Ricordea or some other softie. Please ID it for me :) ... Oh and can you post a pic of this when its big. Hope its something good

has anybody had any experience with this salt? how would you rate it? did you see anything different about your corals and fish?

I have stayed away from LFS's for the better part of a year since the last move and the slow progress i am making with my new tank, but with the goal now in sight i allowed myself to pop in and have a look around, as it so happens i was at a non sponsor LFS which i have been into on the odd occasion before .... i bought a Naso tang which is doing great anyway..........
I was feeling in an otherwise mood and proceeded to play dumb and ask some real DOFF questions ..... I saw a large what looked like a magnifica nennie in the tank, i asked the assistant what lighting i needed for this to which he replied and i quote "you need blue and white globes and a nemo" i asked what sort of lights and he said anything so long as they blue and white, i asked if the Thick ones like for fresh water would be ok and he said absolutley. I had to have a nemo though as he said they definately do not survive without one. He was billed at the marine expert at the shop !!!!!!!! and he maintains several tanks............. it was in a nutshell the most shocking marine advice i have heard in a long time .....
how then do we as hobbiests and in general very knowlegable marine hobbiests change this ...........
Let me say this simply ..... ignorance and lack of education is killing livestock.... our hobby will become heavily requlated with unreasonable rules UNLESS we take matters into our own hands and prevent this ...... !!!!!!!! we need to do something

Hi guys
So I decided the 270L was getting a bit small (funny how that happens ;) )
Anyway i bought the tank from @
mandarin who was kind enough to deliver it to my house on Saturday.
Here as some specs:
- 1.5m(l) x 800mm(b) x 600mm(h). 720 Litres
- 12mm base, 10mm sides. Fully euro braced top and bottom 10mm.
- Full Coast to Coast Overflow meaning the overflow is on the side of the tank from back to front
- 6 x T5 80W
- Sump: 1100mm x 370mm x 400mm, standard 3 chamber configuration but with no baffles
- Reef Octopus 160 Extreme skimmer
One of my questions would be surrounding the sump. It's probably a bit small and it doesn't have any baffles. I looked at my sump and there were no bubbles to speak of before the water enters the first baffle so i guess my skimmer doesn't produce too many bubbles that enter the tank so im not too concerned with adding baffles?
Some pics
1.The new arrival
2. Removed the doors and new paint job. I will re-paint the doors then attach them
3. Overflow
4. Sump
5. Hood
Cheers

Need some advice, here are my water parameters that I can measure. Everything looks good except the calcium level. It shows low, I added Kalkwasser in a couple of weeks ago and it did not increase the level. I made up the mixture and used a drip line to add it over several hours. Not sure why it did not raise the calcium and/or how important it is to push it to 400... Has anyone had a similar issue or am I doing something wrong, like not making the dosage strong enough?

Help, I have tried everything I can think of to get my skimmer back to normal operation. The last thing I did was add "red slime remover" to the sump in order to address some red slime that was starting in the tank and to help with a couple of rocks that I just picked up that had red algae on them. The issue is that the protein skimmer is skimmer is chugging out bubbles like crazy which is aerating the water (corals do not like this)... It is also pushing bubbles/foam out the top, pushing the lid up. The adjustment that I do have is to raise and lower the output tube, which I have done, but this has not helped. I also clamped the air inlet line to reduce how much air is brought in, this has helped in stopping the bubbles/foam from pushing the top off but I still have too much air coming from the output.... Is this due to the red slime remover? What else can I try? I have run it with air for a day, in hopes that it would clear up, but it has not. Maybe, now that the top is not being pushes off, it can work off the protien and over time will settle down? If this is the case, how much harm will the aerating cause the corals?
I included a pic so you might be able to tell what type of skimmer I have, the lid has 3 shapes, almost like a nuclear image. This is it running normal, right now it's a cloud in that area.

Just thought I would share my auto top off idea since I'm always asking for advice on things and too new to give back, so here it is and I hope someone finds value in it.
First of all, I have a RO (reverse osmosis) system in the house that I cut into to drive the auto-top-off system, since it is pressurized. This should work with any filtration system, as long as it is pressurized, using RO has the added advantage of being filtered. It is a simple idea that I am sure someone has used so hopefully I am not re-stating the obvious. This is running in my sump per the pic, let me know if the pic is not big enough and I can re-post a larger one. I can't think of the last time a toilet valve has failed, so I am hoping she'll be reliable over time. With that said, I added a high/low level water alarm device as added protecting against me forgetting to turn the valve on or to protect against a valve failure. One last point, I used the wire from a coat hanger to station the valve in a vertical position beside the return pump.
Parts - picked up at the Home Depot
1/4" T joint with a 3/8" output
10' 3/8" tubing
12" stainless steel braided hose to attach the shut off valve to the toilet valve
3/8" shut off valve
basic toilet shut off valve with built in float (see pic)

Hi all, I am the proud owner of a 6ft marine tank. Just started two months ago with plenty of good intentions and little know how. I seem to have managed to keep a few corals and fish alive (probebly by blind luck) and have just been introduced to the concept of protien skimmers etc.
I am trying to find some second hand goods and lots of advice.

Who or what would do this to my peaceful Brittle Star?
His one leg is also missing but was not eaten as I found it in the tank.

Notes: Guys I am tenatively going to make my Navarchus available he is a stunning fish but just not my absolute peak of the bunch and the rest of the family agrees. He is super healthy and although many say this species is very shy I couldnt disagree more this fish is definately not shy. He swims with some monster size Pomacanthurus, Zebrasoma and Acanthurus so he is very much used to the company of big dominant fish. He is now in the 9 - 10cm range. He comes from a good proven supply source and have had him for a few months now. I am looking at R1300

Good day fellow reefers.
What do you use to clean your tank with before setting up? My tank have been standing for a while and accumulated some dust. I gave it a wipe with some brown vinegar water and then gave it a rinse with tap water. What I would like to know is, if that was enough or should I give it another rinse and with what?
thanks

Hi all,
My first post here. Really enjoying the information on this forum thus far. I have kept freshwater fish in the past with great success but keen on something salty now
Just an idea of prices these days, before we get into equiment, bare bones what would a 150cmx70cmx70cm set me back these days?
I am in Durban so any suggestions who is reasonable in building me a custom tank and stand? I still have an old sump tank I kept so I hope to use that.
Cheers,
Erick

Hi all,
Thought I would start a thread for my current 4 ft tank...
This was originally a tropical tank. I then visited my LFS who was kind enough to sell me just about everything I didn't need.
Friends on MASA recommended I have a hole drilled as the system suggested by the LFS was gonna wet my carpets.

We then installed the plumbing...
Next up...create durso...
My small sump was then taken apart and a larger one built.
The sump has a very interesting home made Protein Reskimmer built in. This think kicks butt...

A fellow great reefer came around, seen my new tank and suggested I leave the back glass to go through it's natural process.
Think he said it will go black first, then not to sure, but an array of changes, this will go on for about 2 years. Then the glass I hope will be nice and covered in coralline or clean on it's own.
What do you guys think, have any of you not kept the back glass clean and had good results, even if it is two years down the line.
Also if I do leave it I can move rock structures back a bit, that would be good in my opinion as at present I did leave a bit if space to facilitate the cleaning of the back glass.
It will however be a mission to clean.
Currently looks like this, have till end of month to make changes then my stock goes in from my nano.
So yes or no and why? Thanks reefers.

Hi there ppl.
I dont realy want to do this but i might have to.
Ive got 2 leathers. One green finger leather and one pink colt.
To days ago i had a temp proplem. Ja stupid me never turned on the DIY fan chiller i made.
So now the pink colt and green finger leather suffered a bit.
The green finger looks ok. But the pink colt dont.
The LR it was stuck to broke almost in half at before i got it.
He was still fine.
Now after this heat problem he started to look like it was its first day in my tank.
This morning when i had a look it looks like a part of the pink colt that was stuck to the bigger piece of LR started to come off.
Now it looks like that piece is dieing.
I knog fraging it now isent good but i was thinking to frag the part of the pink col still attatched to the smaller LR (wich still looks ok).
Is this wize to do or must i just wait till i do water change saterday and leave it another week to see what happens?
Please help ppl.

Hey guys.
I have a HPI RTR NITRO RS4 3 EVO on sale for a bargin.
This link explains it all, but if you have any questions, ask away.
http://www.hpieurope.com/kit-info. ph...=10006&lang=en
It come with two bodies, one was used to run it on the track, the other was custom sprayed and was to be used for display, but I was to lazy to take it to Denkit to be cut.
This car does need a service and might need a new carb, which wont be very expensive. I know Denkit here in Durban specialize in HPI and I get all my spares and service is done there. I have some spare parts as well.
I have the glow plug starter with chager, and I bought the roto start as an extra, which excludes the battery and charger.
For everything for R2300
Without the roto start R2000

Hi,
In my sump I have a DSB and ATS. Water gets skimmed, then passes over DSB, Pump takes some through ATS and drips back onto DSB and the to the return pump and carbon filter.
I have 2 x 50W energy saver globes in the sump. Is this the correct option? They are 5000K Phillips globes. Does the ATS need heat or need light?

Hi All
Please can someone tell me where in the sandton area or westrand area is someone that can drill a 10mm glass?
I got home last night to a very pleasant smell, the smell of the ocean, sadly for some strange reason my tank(Old tank) base cracked  and yes, almost half the tank was on the flour.
Luckily I have a spare Base and just need it drilled.
Any body?????

Hi Guys
Due to the hot weather and my tank reaching 30 deg, I have invested in the Hailea HC1000B Chiller.
Read the manual and I see that it uses the R22 refrigerant that is being phased out. Is this going to present a problem in the future? Will the refrigerant need to be replaced? Is there a substitute refrigerant that can be used?
On the website it says "our chillers-the HC series use the environmental friendly refrigerant R134a" in the product description, but the technical data refers to R22.
What is correct? $£%$ CHINESE
Thanks

Ok so you have just setup your tank and let the cycle complete, now you want to add your clean up crew, well read on and enjoy!
Ok, so the CUC for beginners come in 4 different families namely:
- Crabs
- Shrimps
- Starfish
- Snails
there are others like urchins and sea cucumbers but these we will leave for the more mature tanks and advanced reefers. Now not all animals in each category are reef, fish or beginner safe so i am going to choose the ones that are commonly available and safe and used for CUC purposes.
1.Crabs
The one of the most interesting livestock choices but for the beginner and even the intermidiate i only recommend hermit crabs, porcelain crabs and anemone crabs.
As for quantities dont stock to many in a new system as there wont be enough food for them and supplimental feeding will just degrade the water quality.
The following are good choices:
Dwarf Blue Legged Hermits (
Clibanarius tricolor) - great scavenger
Electric Blue Hermits (
Calcinus elegans) - great scavenger
Scarlet Reef hermit (
Paguristes cadenati) - great scavenger
Porcelain Anemone Crab (Neopetrolisthes maculosus) - exellent filter feeders -
does not need an anemone at all
2. Shrimps
Another great choice for the CUC crew, here we have limited choices as they are very sensitive to changes in water params, salinity. Here i only recommend the following:
Peppermint Shrimp (
Lysmata wurdemanni complex)

do not confuse the above with the Camel shrimp below, the camel shrimp has a moveable rostrum (beak) that is usually angled upwards
Camel Shrimp (Rhynchocinetes durbanensis)
Banded Coral Shrimp (
Stenopus hispidus)
3.Starfish
These are the Kreepy-Krauly's of the reefing world, they will hide by day and at night will slither all over the reef eating detritus etc. Here for the CUC i ONLY recommend Serpant Brittle-starfish, please when buying these remember not to get any that are green, the green death as they are known will eat your fish, crustacea and other sessile inverts. Keep 1 - 2 per tank also remembering that newer systems wont have enough food to support 2 in the beginning.
Serpant Brittle Starfish
(Ophiothrix sp.)

Hi y'all,
After doing a fair amount of reading on MASA, SARK and other online sources, I decided a DSB was the way to go and wondered why I never used it on my previous reef tank.
I'm nearly finished my 6 foot tank build with a sump for skimmer, refugium and DSB. The sump specs:
110x50x32cm
Section 1 - inlet from overflow and houses skimmer (TS3 or large Deltec, yet to be acquired); 30x50cm
Section 2 - return pump (5000 lts p/h, yet to be acquired!); 25x50cm
Section 3 - refugium; 15x50cm
Section 4 - DSB; 15cm deep; 40x50cm
No, I'm not crazy! The order is correct... read on.
I read an interesting artice on reef-eden (DIY 4, I think) about separating the flow in the sump to accommodate that required for the DSB. The skimmer obviously needs a high rate of flow, but the DSB may require a lesser flow rate (depending on the length and breadth of the DSB, of course). I also saw on YouTube where an American guy (not that it matters!) built a sump with the return pump in the middle of the sump so that the water flowed from either side to the middle, at varying flow rates. Below is a diagram, roughly to scale, to the sump design (bear in mind I am not a graphic designer:tt2:):

The triple lines are the baffles, with a single piece of glass separating the DSB and refugium. Water depth over the DSB will be about 10cm. Attached is another picture (not to scale) of the sump, again, please don't laugh.
So, my questions are:
1) is it really worth going this route for the sake of varying flow rates?
2) I have, over the last couple of days, come to realise for the size of my tank and with 15-20 fish and a mix of SPS and LPS, my DSB should be at least 50% larger - am I correct in thinking this? I don't mind building a new sump if need be (fun with silicone...Hmmm), but I am limited to the size of the cabinet, so I can't go that much bigger, perhaps 70 or 80x50cm max).
3) I read on one of the threads that one should have a fllow of around 10 times your total water volume p/h over the DSB - Eish! that is more than my return pump will be pushing, and surely will result in sand storms! Any new ideas on this? I read RiaanP's great advice on this topic.
4) If the feed to the DSB is pre-filtered by the filter sock and partially by the skimmer (this won't get all of the water passing through), will there be enough food for worms etc on the DSB? Should I feed this manually to keep them thriving, or leave the DSB as a Nitrate removal stage, and leave the dritters to grow in the refugium. If I leave the DSB for Nitrate reoval only, then I may choose to keep it dark, with the refugium lit for the macro algae (chaeto).
I am planning on using play sand (well rinsed) with some Aragonite mixed in for the DSB.
Guys, any advice and feedback is most welcome and will be constructive (and apologies for the long-winded post!).
Many thanks in advance:thumbup:

Hey guys,
I've seen quite a few posts about this low iron/lead glass.
If I was to change the front plane of my new tank to this, do I use the same thickness as the regular glass I plan on using?
1500 x 650(h) - 12mm thickness?
Tank size to be 1500 x 600 x 650(h)

Here is a list of
MY 10 easy to keep LPS corals for the beginners, i have often been asked which to start of with so i am giving a full list of easy to keep LPS corals and their care and requirements. Once you have kept these successfully you can move on to more finicky LPS and start looking further at SPS, NPS.
I have all of these in my very basic system and all are flourishing with minimal care specifically for this article.
Large Polyp Stony Corals are generally larger calcareous corals with large fleshy polyps. The degree of extension of the tentacles depends upon the amount of light, current, and whether the coral is feeding or not. Most LPS corals have long sweeper tentacles which they use to keep any other organisms a safe distance away, to feed and might possibly damage other corals or livestock.
Now when i mean easy, i dont mean you can add these in the first week of adding water, i mean your water must be perfect and tank must be cycled. prefered params as follows:
- Ammonnia and Nitrites at 0
- Nitrates < 10ppm
- Phosphates as close to 0 but not more than 0.25ppm
- Calcium around 400ppm - 450ppm
- Magnesium around 1350ppm
- alkalinity levels between 2.5-3.5 meq/L (7-10 dKH).
- pH 8.1-8.4
- sg 1.023-1.025

Hi guys
Well as some of you know i have a 270L DT and im looking at a 700L setup to replace it. Now i only have so much space so i need to drain the old tank and put the fish and coral in containers - then move the new tank to its spot and add all the stock again.
So that means my old 350L of water or so would be used and the rest would be newly mixed saltwater.
This would surely cause a cycle. Would it be too much stress on the fish to do it this way or are there better ways? I would add as much purigen/carbon as i can to remove ammonia and look at other ammonia extracting products.
Can this be done?
-
My system is 500L DT, 200L sump. TS2 pump packed up. Wanting to focus more on SPS. I have enough space in my sump. Should I consider upgrading to a TS3?

Hey there,
Is there anybody with a second hand HOB or internal nano skimmer.. rated for 100L to 300L
Thanks
-
So i was drooling over my tank the other day as most of us do when i saw the camel shrimp tear into a mushroom. Used his big nasty pincers and was munching away at it...
I wasn't aware they weren't quite reef safe when i put him in 5 months ago.
Is there a way to catch him? I don't want to move any rock and i tried netting him tonight after lights out but he darts away like a rocket when i get in close
Ideas?

Hey all,
Up to now I have been using NSW to fill my tank and my water changes. I am just starting to worry that the stress of getting it here in time etc...plus the bacteria etc may not be gelling well for me.
There are many reads on many of the forums about what salt to buy...my question is simple...
WHAT IS THE BEST SALT TO BUY!!!?
Also, I will be mixing it in 25litre drums, must I use RO water or can I just use normal tap water.
Thanks

Hi Guys
Wonder if anyone can help with any info/reasons on the following happenings:
My brother-in-law has a small marine tank 3foot x 1foot x 2foot.
Up to date it would have been running for 6months.
Its very basic with no real significant filtration or sump.
About a month ago, his tank water went murky and the fish started coming to the surface for air so he rushed his corals down to my tank so they wouldn't die and headed down to the beach to get some NSW for a water change. He did almost a 50% water change that same night and by the morning his tank was clear again.
Since then his tank has been fine but he's kept his corals with me.
Monday night this week, the same thing happened. The water went so dirty you could only see about 3cm into the tank. Unfortunatly this time all the fish died!
He did a 20% water change sunday just before this all happened.
Any ideas what could cause the water to change so quickly like it did!?
He hadn't added any new stock since the first crash. I still think it was an over stocking issue, but i'm too new to be able to know for sure.

Remember:
Be careful adding this to an existing tank. Make sure that the rock is fully cured, otherwise it can kill off your tank!!!!

Hey all,
My tank is in its 4th/5th week now and although i used mature water when setting up, I know the tank must run for a while.
I have started developing a green algae and its getting like grass. My turbo snails died. I don't know if that was as a result of coincidence or the water.
My Zoas are doing ok and my Xenia is pulsing and growing well. Even the few mushroom frags are doing well.
I added a sand star, lawn mower blemmie and sail fin tang and they seem to be enjoying the grass, but not fast enough.
I also have bubbles growing on my rocks.
Is this all just part of the normal cycle?

Hi guys...
I was wanting to start a new tank and have no experience in marine fish..
I had a look @ a nice size tank @ Natures Pet Land... +- 180l 4ft tank @ R4500, with a cabinet...
When i spoke to the guy there, he said that there was no need for a sump, all I had to get was a +- 300l canister filter or something like that. IS THIS TRUE????
Thanks in advance

After 14 months into this hobby, and I am more hooked than ever.
This thread is about the tank I took over from Clinton. It's going to be a mixed reef tank. Mainly to learn about SPS.
I have learned so much and there is much more to learn, especially from experience.
So, what I would like to achieve in this thread is to get the tank to perfection for my next even bigger tank in a few years time.

Hey MASA members,
I've been hanging around the site for quite some time, and decided it's time to join.
I've had fish tanks since I could remember, and currently have a 1m marine tank. Not much to look at at the moment, but it will be replaced soon :)

I have the resun king 3 2400l/h pump on my reeftek skimmer - packed up recently. Where can I buy a replacement pump, and does it need to be the same pump?
-
This is what my current wiring looks like.
This is the plan (not a lot of detail)
And this is where I am at the moment. This includes a PLC, which will be used to monitor and log at least Temp and PH, and will control timing on lights and pumps. It will also switch my two heaters as well as my fan within certain temperature bands. I am very interested to log things like PH and Temp to my PC before implementing control and after. Will take a reading every 10 minutes or so and put these onto graphs.

Hi Marco,
I've got one of your units was the exact one you had at the JHB IMACSA couple years ago...u sold it to Anthony (Punk) which I bought from him, has the TDS meter built in.
Anyways, just wanted to know as it has two clear cylinders one for what looks like aragonite media and the other is those blue/brown gell media. What is the purpose of these two media?
The TDS measurement displays the RO water before it enters these chambers, noticeably there is a higher TD reading after the water passes through these chambers...what are the added effects/benefits to your RO water?
-
I'm looking for a 1 micron filter and cannister.
One with preferably 20mm connections. Not that small little RO connections. I might have to connect it to small pump. That is if normal siphon flow does not work, or takes too long. 1μm will be slow, gravity siphon even slower. So I might be forced to push water with a small pump.
If 1μm not available, maybe 5μm.
This is for my quarantine setup.

The Zululand heat is killing me and trying its best to destroy my very brave Haleia HC 500 chiller plus the electricity costs is running away. This convinced me the MH lights are more suitable for the upcountry reefers whose tanks does not overheat regularly.
LED lights are too expensive and it seems as if it is still in the early research and development stage. That leaves me with the T5 option.
My tank is 520 mm deep, 370 wide and 390 from the front to the overflow. I have looked at T5's before and never considered it an option because The T5's are longer than the tank width.
I now wonder if it will work if I mount the tubes from front to the back. The piece of tubes that is then sticking out at the back of the tank will then be above the small pre sump attached to the back of the tank. The overflow water runs down this slope that might become a scrubber lighted by the too long tubes.

The overflow slope than could become a extra ATS.

This is a side view of the tank.
And a front view so you can see what is in the tank.
Please advise me what tubes I should use and how to place/mount them.

Hi guys,
I need some help here with something strange.
I just got a new bubble tip over the weekend and my picasso clown discovered it and immediatelly started enjoying himself. Over the past couple of days I have noticed that the clown is not well. He is not eating at all and looks very tired. He is also having some black spots on its body which all happend after the nennie was introduced.
I dripped the nennie for 6 hours before adding
He was eating fine before I added the BTA though.
Could the BTA be the reason for this behaviour.
Tank paramaters :
ph : 8.2
no 3 : 15 (a bit high :()
temp : 28
alk : 8
running 9months now
I have not fed the nennie anything yet.
Please help

Hi Reefers,
Mods, i dont hope you mind me posting this sale in this thread. The thing is after putting my complete setup up for sale, some of the sales that was dibbed didn't go through as a result that may setup is now taken down for nottin :(. I have moved all the LS to another 4ft system that i have. The thing is the filtration is not coping very well with the massive bio-load introduced this weekend.
I had to do a water change this morning to get the parameters back in place.
I'm asking reefers to please help me move the LS asap. I don't want them to suffer let alone die.
I am willing to meet at a central location (if there is anough response) friday 12:00 at the pertol garage in midrand(one with the restaurant over the highway, oramp just before olifantsfontein coming from JHB), to accomadate the reefers that can't get to vanderbijlpark.
I also aked that when you guys dibbs, please be sure that you would be taking it. I dont want to bag the LS and when i get to midrand half the sales don't go through. This will put unecessary stress on the LS.
Your help will be much appreciated
PS: If someone can buy the nennie i will be very happy!!

Can I perhaps spark an interresting conversation about lava rock ?
I have been looking into this over the last few weeks, and have read loads of threads on the internet about different opinions.
basically what I have learned so far :
1 - Their is 2 types of "lava" rock - Ash that cools and forms rock like structures
Actual lava material that cools and hardens
2 - "Lava Rock" - Most rock beds under the sea is Lava Based - Lava is a mixture of granite and quartz... unlike popular believe very little if any metals are mixed into this.. 1 of the forms of metal is Pyrite (you would be able to see this with the naked eye as it is "fools gold" and makes gold colour deposits. Metals are heavier than most silica based geological matter (like quartz) and therfor
3 - "Ash Rock" contains melted / burned material that creates a pigment light enough to be clasified as "ash". This could be any of the natural occuring minerals found higher in the earths crust.. some of these minerals when melted / burnt can be toxic.
I am fortunate enough to have a Geologist for a dad (fater-in-law) and we took some samples of the commercialy available rock that you get...
White / Grey / Black Rocks ( or even a mix of these) - These lava rocks composition was 95 % Granite and Quartz (just remeber most sand is also quartz).
Red - Fairly high amount of oxides mixed with granite- thus the red colour
Brownish - Light Brown colour - more quartz than granite , with some minerals like silica and so on.
Dark Grey / Black - This is the one to be carefull of - mostly metals with very little granite.
This was a geological look at the rocks, not chemical.
Based on this a few points were made clearer -
1 - any if not all rocks found on earth is some form of lava - even calcuim based rocks came from the earths crust at some point.
2 - lava rock that is dangerous is very dark, or it will show clear signs of metals - like gold colour deposits (Pyrite - also contains
arsenic trioxide arsenous anhydride arsenous oxide)
3 - The ocean floor is made of rock beds - "lava" material with a hardend and cooled crust constantly shifting .
Why I was interrested in this was Live Rock.. I bought some Live Rock and a few pieces broke off etc. and guess what - same geological matter as some Lava Rock
Interresting or what ?

Some of the details:
60x55x60cm Tank
Dymax 150w MH for lighting
Reeftek TS2 Skimmer

Reef Octopus Return pump 3000l/h

I have a question.
In your sumps (those of you who have them) you often create an area where pods are able to breed and establish themselves therefore feeding the display tank. Can all the Pods survive the return pump to Display tank?
I know the Skimmers are no good for the pods, but does the return Pump not kill them as well, or am I mistaken?
-
hi all i have a 450l +- display tank.
The sump: holds 200L +- i have a aqua medic 1000 turbofloter skimmer, dsb, live rock, a canisterfilter with carbon and phosphate remover.

Fish i now have:

1 queen coris (fomosa) wrase if he comes out of the sand(new member been a week now)

Hi all
I bought a new custom tank 1.6 x 0.7 x 0.7. The tank is very heavy because of the overflow design (3layers of glass at bottom and back), I would say 150kg, the tank would take about 750l, the sump about 150l, which gives a total of 1050kg.
The only thing is, my new flat is on the second floor. Would there be a possibility of the tank being to heavy for the foundations?
Thank you
Neil

Hi peeps...
All right - I knew that I would reach this point, so now I will need some input...
With keeping the dedicated NPS tank and feeding so very heavily (espically live brine) I have seen the aiptasia in my tank exploding lately into massive numbers...
They were always there, and there is no harm in having 1 or 2 of them, but I am facing an infestation.
The larger ones I zap with a product from Tropic Marin, but I cannot get to all of them, as some stay under my scaping. The smaller ones do not pose too much of a threat, as the NPS are quite capable of standing their ground.
But if I just leave the smaller ones to grow large untill I can zap them, then the tank will be overrun with aiptasia that will be a force that I cannot stop, and eventually they will win the fight agains the NPS - especially the gorgonians.
Now, what is the best line of attack here, that has the best guarantee of results?
Firstly, please do not even mention removing the rocks, as this cannot happen. I have sun coral babies growing all over the place...
So, I know that CBB fish work well, and aparantly so does Longnose Butterflies. I know there is also an aiptasia eating hermit crab - yet I have no idea as to how they look or where to find them.
My other problem with a CBB is that my tank is only 700x450x450, so I cannot keep a large specimen. I also have small tube worms in the tank, so the CBB might take them out too - something I would like to prevent, but if that is what it takes then so be it. I also know that some CBB's never take aiptasia at all - which is then a waste.
What can you guys recommend I use - with the best guaranted results?

Hi all.
Can you guys give me 2 or 3 companies that supply MH lights. I'm looking for a few quotes to compare prices.
The only ones I know of are Waterboy, Aquatic Depo, Exotic pets and Aquamedic.
Are there any others?

so ! i bought a monster 2 hp chiller
its been installed outside about 5 meteres from tank !
20mm piping has been used with unfortunately 3 elbow joints
problem i have is the chiller not really cooling water properly
chiller set to 25 degrees , but water in dsp is 27 ish
could this be that the water warms up within its travel of 5 meteres ? ( hard to believe )
do i need to run a larger pump from sump to chiller so that chiller gets more water in it ?
advice please
thanks

Im doing a 10 litre water change every 2nd day. Am I doing too many or can I continue. I would like to change a bit more. Im running a fish only setup with 16kg of live rock. Ive also got phosguard and purigen and activated charcoal(charcoal I only run when neccesary, but the phosguard and ourigen i run all the time). Should I worry about killing the worm etc as im changing from a dsb to a ssb or doesnt it matter if I cyphon them up when cleaning. thanks for all the help and sorry about all the questions

Hi Folks,
Been doing lots of reserach on the "buggers" as my tank seems to be infested with them :(
Do most tanks have these critters & what can we do about it - if anything?
Longterm is the tank doomed - will they just continue to multiply & irritate all corals etc?
Thanks in advance

Hello Guys
Anyone in the witbank/middelburg area willing to part with some chaeto/caulerpra for my new tank's refugium??? am willing to pay!

Hi Guys
Just an Intro from me.
Im Really new to Marine Tanks, I do have experience in Freshwater, I currently have 5 tanks of which 1 is now the Marine , the others are Freshwater of which one is a Discus tank.
Well I picked up my tank from a seller yesterday, Purchased if from him complete (i think)
His mom said that he had run it for 4 years .
Took everything from him including the water.
Its a marine tank , Juwel Rio 300, 350ltr
With a Tetratec 1200 external cannister filter
2 Powerheads
And all the Standard Juwel Equipment for this tank.
4 X T5 lighting 2 blue and 2 white
In it i have 6 fish,
1 Yellow Tang
2 Orange clownfish
2 Yellow clownfish
1 Dark blue Angelfish
Live rock with one or two soft corals stuck to it.
Iv set everything up and all seems good, When Transporting the tank home , we did not strip the tank clean, Kept the filters intact, the sand (i think its sand? looks like coral bits) in the tank.
removed water (used same water)
Removed live rock .
I really am new to Marine Tanks so some of my questions may seem trivial.
Since filling the tank and having it settle, then introducing the fish,
1 : Tiny Star dish like things? Colour looks white, thay look like starfish , what are they? Theres about 20 this far on the glass,Crawling to the top.
2 : Centipede like White wormy looking creatures on the back of the juwel filter and some on the live rock.
3) a black slug like thing on the live rock that when touched contracts.
4) Some tiny snails.
Ill post up a few pictures later today (fish are sleeping?)
Any idea off hand what thay could be?
Im going to try and take things really slow with this tank. Its gonna be one long learning experience for me.Its not colourfull but the fish are :)
Also before i forget, I havnt positions the exit pupe of the Cannister filter as yet and its creating really small tiny bubbles in the tank, Will this be fine for the fish?
Thanks Guys, I will really appreciate all the help!

Hi
I'm looking to buy a brand new/used (but in very good condition) fish tank. Typical dimensions i'm looking for is about 1.2m(L) x 0.45m(W) x 0.6m(H). Are there any stores that have prebuilt/custom make it? Or is there anyone planning to sell theirs?

Hey guys.
As I asked you guys in a previous thread about how to change from a dsb to a ssb and then I decided to go from the crap crushed coral to beach sand I collected at low tide below the water line. So I did the first 1/4 of my tank on monday and decided to do another quarter today. Since monday was such a struggle and ended up losing half my water(I couldnt syphon it out as the crushed coral was to large for a normal pipe so had to use a bigger pipe and I lost a lot of water(half the volume of my tank.) So today I used a cup to scoop it up and Ive got quite alot of crap floating around now. Ive got no coral or anything. Fish and turbos only. I probably screwed up. Was it as dumb as I think it was or not too bad. Any suggestions. Im planning to do a 20% water change later after the crap has settled.
The crushed coral stored so much crap its scary. I still dont know why I got given that advice by my lfs. by the way.
Thank you so much for all the help. Glad I discovered a forum where you guys actually help and not just tell you how you screwed up and you have to buy this and that. This is by far the best forum ever. Wish I discovered it when I started. Thanks guys

Hi Guys,
I have a large pincushion leather in my tank that seems to be getting small little holes in it as well as some black spots? what is this and how do I treat?
-
Geez guys...
Just looked through photos of my old tank, and realised where I started out in this hobby and how little knowledge I had back then vs. now...
This thread is your chance to post some "back in the day" photos and share some stories on where you were then, and where you are now... ;) Post as many photos as you can...
Here is mine...
I remember setting this up just a few days after my son was born in January 2009. I had kept a reef tank for about a month then, but we moved, so this really was the first attempt:
THEN (2009):
I had no idea what a SPS, LPS or softie was. No idea about what fish could go together and what not. Did not know about a DSB, and algae do what? Got exited with this red stuff growing on my "gravel" too.
FTS:
Sump: (if you can call it one... hehehehe)
YES THAT IS A CANISTER FILTER WITH CERAMIC RINGS IN IT!!!
Back then, I caught pods out my tank cause I thought they were lice... We also referred to tube worm growing out the LR as "little palm trees"...
I was even the idiot victim of a "beautiful" snow white nennie (bad on me!!!)
NOW (2011):
Now, I have an indepth knowledge of bacteria dosing and how they operate, lighting, feeding, biological filtration, what to keep and what not. I know at the drop a coin exactly what is wrong with my and other tanks and know exaclty how ti fix it (most of the time anyway...) I keep a dedicated NPS tank which is somehting very few reefers even attemp thanks to my knowledge. And I must give all this thanks to MASA really!!! You okes have helped me become so much more in quite a short period of time... KUDOS MASA MEMBERS!!!
Current FTS:
SUMP:
My sectret...
Nah, just joking, I just do not have an updated photo at all.
But, always know that we learn every day, and you will never know it all, so just keep on asking and open yourself up towards learning new things!!!

Im still not sure what word best describes this moning. Frustrating, unbelievable and bizaare come close. It was almost like a bad episode on the twilight zone - you sit watching, processing everything but its still makes absolutly no scense and seems too surreal to be happening.
Marcel got arrested.
As many of you know, Macel is applying for permits to breed ornamental marine fish commercially. Being the first person in the Western Cape to apply to do this, no governmental department knew exactly what/which/who he needed. And so began the long process being passed from person to person and between every department that may at some point deal with aquaculture. The whole thing reached its pinnacle early this morning when the Fisheries officers came to inspect his facility (again). Even though Marcel has done what he has been told and is in the proccess of obtaining all relevent permits...the officers insist he is in the wrong and arrested him. He spent two hours locked up in a holding cell while being threatened to be moved to Parow prison.
His crime - - having marine livestock and breeding. Amazing what being completly honest with the government officials gets you.
He has been released and will appear in court tomo morning.

Please Id this Fish. Is it agro or can I keep it with other small fish? I think it changes color when it gets to be an adult because I havent seen any adult fish like this, if this is so what do they look like as adults.

Hi guys
So i finally managed to get a Royal Gramma from Dave in Vanderbijlpark. We caught him and all was well putting him in a container. Then we added a rock with shrooms to the bucket and the fish got startled and jumped out. He fell about 1m to the cement floor.
I got him home and he wasnt looking good at all. This morning he was responsive to touch and scurrying away. When he swims away he stays upright but then just goes down to the bottom and kinda lies against the glass and not completely upright. Tried feeding him to no avail. He is in the sump
Any advice on what to do?

Dosing mg (30 drops of brightwell) & calcium (cap of purple up 5 ml) & iodine (6 drops of brightwell) 2 x a week, wednesday & Saturday's. I do this in an attempt to keep my alk stable, its a new tank running from 22/12/2011. Is this ok to do this?
Also have brightwell kh buffer, in my sump I have a +- 50 l RO compartment for my auto top up, my question is should I mix RO with kh buffer & put into the auto top up chamber or not?
If yes then how do I go about doing this, system is about 510 l, DT is 430 & sump max capacity is 180 l, but only half full as it is a sump.
Should I also does the calcium, iodine & magnesium in the RO auto top up chamber on a Wed & Sat?
What concerns me is if I do it this way is that over time the concentration level of the products would build up resulting in poisoning my system.
Alternative is to fabricate a drip system for calcium, magnesium & iodine. But this would probably get blocked up soon.
What is my best course of action when it comes to stabilizing alk?
Or have I missed the boat completely . Lol

Hi All
I am new to this forum but not really to marine or tropical fish.
Thought I'd introduce myself here :)
I live in centurion, and have been keeping fish since I was 10 years old.
I currently have 13 tanks, two are marine.
200cm x 100cm x 70cm - currently doing repairs and moving it
240cm x 70cm x 70cm - softies and some sps
The empty tank will most probably become another reef system but I'm still deciding :) :yeahdude:

Hi, can someone please tell me what type of pipe and fittings I will need to use for the plumbing. Going to look tommorow but not sure what type I need. Will normal waste pipes be ok or is there a specific type that needs to be used?
TIA :-D

How the Efffffffen Effffffenn #$#%$#$%^ do the Rest of the world get it right to upload videos???????????
The whole time since I had the Nokia N96, I battled to upload videos to either Youtube or Photobucket. In the last year I tried zillions of times and maybe got it right once.
Now with the N8 I thought it will be easier, but I still f@%#%#ng battle. It will start to upload, show the progress up to about 40%, and then just "hang".... This is on Photobucket.
On Youtube, it will start, take like an hour for a 5mb video, and then says : "sorry, an error occurred and I can send an error report and try again.
This happened since the beginning of last year.
I dunno if it is my Pc, the video need to be converted, or something I dunno about.
Please help, as I am getting f@#$%ng frustrated to waste valuable hours waiting for something to turn into wasted time.
Again,Sorry if this is in the wrong Forum

Hi,
we finally starting the marine tank now I'll post pics later :) .
Can I put all the liverock in at once or should it be put in in stages?
And we should have the tank filled up with R/O water by tonight and the salt in and everything, so will it be fine to put the liverock in on the weekend?
What is pink stuff on liverock from Sri Lanka? is it good or common and how much should it cost?

Wouldn't it be possible to use the ballast in a high power CFL (I've seen ones up to 44watt for like R50 at spar) to power T5s?

A hole was made in the centre on the cut off bottom (collection cup) and used silicon to stick them together and prevent water (skimate) falling out the collection cup

Hi guys,
My LFS has a Midas Blenny for sale. How would he be in a STD 4ft tank where i already have a purple firefish? There are lots of hiding places but i really don't want to upset the peace.
They also have a very cool orange sponge......what is the survival rate on these / how well do they do in aquaria and how tempremental are they?
Thanks for the advice in advance.

So i was a bit bored the other day and started thinking about a skimmer
how about this as an idea... using a SeioM1500 or M2600 would pump something in the region of 10 000Lph, they have venturi (SP) fittings .... and they run off next to nothing in terms of power......
so here is an idea for a seio skimmer.... it would be fed directly from the overflow OR would require a feeder pump
Who has an opinion on whether this would lork or not?
