If you travel a lot it is a pain to explain to someone how to feed your tank so I always use this. It is just a small powerhead with a film container stuck to the outflow. The film container has some 1/4" holes in it and it is positioned in the water on the edge of the tank with the top of the container out of the water. Adjust it so that the water just comes out of the 6 or 7 holes and not over the top.
I just keep this contraption running on the front edge of the tank and I have pre mixed frozen food in the freezer. The person feeding the tank just drops in a cube of frozen food that I also have in film containers. It thaws in the film container on the powerhead and gets dispersed throughout the tank.
No guessing.

Hi Guys/Gals
I have over the last 2 weeks finally added some life to my tank.
250l Cube tank.
It is great, hope all goes well with my fish, they have been doing great so far.
I added a new False pecular clown and it started figting with my first oe, which i expected, seems like they have already sorted themselves out.
I had a lot of algae in the just before i put my fish in, it seems to be more controlled now, especially with my yellow tang he does not stop eating.
Here are some pics.
I have named everything, correct me if i am wrong.

hi, im new to the marine tanks, ive been reading a lot of articles and some contradicing each other, two simple questions, (i Hope):
1. protein skimmer - does this have to run 24hrs a day 7 days a week, or can i do a few times a week or hours a day?
2. Lighting, other than the 10-12 hours daylight (got the blue night light), can the lights be off totally, including the blue LED?
on both of the above, ive been told by reputable pet store, that it is possible for skimmer run 3-4 times a week and the lightning can go off (total darkness) few hours per day) Kinda like views of guys that out there already
Thoughts?
thanks

I have a 4 ft 370 litres total tank, so I believe I can only keep 1 tank in there.
i like the Regal, but I believe the Yellow is easier to keep.
Any advice on what I should go for? Do they both get Whitespot easily?

I just returned from a week long holiday, and saw hat my Yellow Prawn Goby has a hole on the one side.
My other inhabitants are:
2 Ocelaris clowns
1 Cleaner Shrimp
1 Cleaner Wrasse
2 Blue Hermits
1 Pink Spot Shrimp Goby
1 Bi-Color Blenny
All the other fisg seems fine.
Someone who looked after my tank last monday reported that the Goby had a reddish spot on the side, so I assumed it got spooked and hurt itself.
I do not have a hospital tank as yet.
Any advice?

Hardware for saleThread title: 2 X 250W Halide Unit
Location: Fourways, JHB
Shipping or Collection only: Collection
Photo's and description/list of items for sale: Unit most probably 18 months old but used for 6. I bought this unit a year ago but never used it. Only thing I used from this unit is the halide globes. Comes with mounting feet and will fit on tanks up to 900 long. No hanging kit included as I never got the cables from previous owner. Should be possible to get the suspension cables from a store where i got the original replacement UV shields. Comes with a spare original UV glass shield.
Unit has 2 X 21W T5 on the sides. Would work very well with 20K globes as they are nice and crisp. NO HALIDE GLOBES included as I used the globes in my aqua-medic pendants.
Dimensions: 900L X 315W X 80H.
T5 and Halides work on separate power cords.
Previous owner used it on a SPS dominated 900 X 900 X 700 cube.
New this unit retails for R5500.
Asking R1500.

Here is a pic.

Floss / ceramic rings and heater.

I know this may be a silly question, but gonna ask the elders anyways!;)
I'm setting up a really small nano/pico tank ( 40 litres total volume).
If i use sand, water and LR from my existing setup, am i to expect a cycle as i would setting up a new system? only other things "new" would be hardware, filter floss and carbon.
any ideas?

Hey guys i was wondering if hermit crabs and clown fish can go together because i have a hermit crab and one clown and was wondering if i can keep them together and if not ill put him in the sump ,, and what lighting should i put in for my sump thanks :)
-
I posted this in my tank thread, but thought I would start a new thread of its own.
I took the plunge and bought a Queen Angel this afternoon from the US shipment that came in last night. 2 very healthy looking specimens came in...one small juvinile and one larger one...I went for the larger as it seemed more relaxed was pecking at rocks and glass for food and was not shy at all of people.
First placed him in the DT, but he got a bit of flack from the Flame Angel and Coral Beauty... didnt think that would happen as its not a Dwarf? So for now he is in the sump and seems calm and relaxed. There is lots of sponges etc down there that he is already pecking at so I am sure that helps as well. Added a rock with some Nori on it and he immidiately went and checked it out...not pecking at it so far though.
Not too worried about him eating just yet, new fish need time to settle down after being shipped imo so will see how he goes in the next few days.
Now I am not sure what to do...do I leave him in there for a good couple of days let him settle in and get his strength back or place him in the DT tonight after lights out?
Reason I am thinking the second option is because my Black Bean was beaten pretty badly when first introduced, but on seeing this I turned off the tank lights and left them so until the following day, the next day it was as if he had been in the tank for years and nobody even gave him a second glance. Would this be the case maybe with the Queen?
Also any other info from guys that have kept them that can help me keep happy and healthy and get it on the eating path in the future, as I have read they can be problematic to get to take prepared foods some times.
Anyway...here are some pics...

Hi all
As some of you know, I have been on the market for a RED SEA MAX 250 setup. I have made contact with a few LFS's and have received a couple of quotes... some good, some not so good.
I am now on the verge of purchasing one and this is now your last opportunity to CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE. I have already received input on some other threads, but thought it best to start a thread just about this query.
By the way, I am a newbie (New to SW, but been in FW for years).
I know that it is pricey (1st negative that gets brought up). My wife has given the thumbs up and she loves the look of the RSM 250... I must agree that it looks stunning. Other comments have been that I can get a better & bigger DIY setup for the same price... well a DIY just doesn't look as good, and the RSM will fit the spot perfectly. Because it's in a "public" area in the house, I would like a tank that has the looks to boot.
I have touched base with a lot of RSM owners, and most comments have been good.
Please provide any comments (good or bad) on this thread... your input will be much appreciated.
By the way, to all of those who have already commented on this topic: A BIG THANK YOU!

New tank is coming next week and im assuming i will need a bigger return pump to meet the flow requirements.
The DT is going to hold about 200L of water and the sump about 30 - 40 L. The return pump will have to pump 1.4m up, Currently i have a resun 1500 which im guessing wont cut it.
Suggestions?

Hi guys,
i have a 4ft 280l tank with a 60l sump and reeftek skimmer and bio balls for filtration and approx 30kg LR. i added a light fitting about 4 months ago which has 2 X 150W MH lights and 2 X T5 bulbs. I placed the unit on top of the canopy and i started having all kinds of issues since then i started having issues with Algae.
I have recently been pressed for time and my tank took a turn for the worse. i will be doing a 50% water change this week and try and salvage all that is wrong with my tank which is now totally full of algae.
Could the light unit be too much for the size of my tank? Any other advice would also be appreciated.
thanks,
-
my clowns swim the whole tank full when my wave maker/fan is off but as soon as i put my wave maker/fan on they seem to find a conner at the bottom of the tank or between the live rock and stay there till the fan is off? when fan is on and switched off the look very tired lol and need a few minutes to recover before wiggling around again.
Should i switch the fan off at night? is there a way of controlling the power of flow?
What should i do?
Advise would be highly appreciated

Hi all
I have a two sump system (Wizards old tank Setup) with a 50 mm pipe connecting the two sump. I have the whole setup running (Tank cycled the works!!!) the first sump has da skimmer and sump rock. Second is for a DSB. Well... When I filled up the DSB with 60kgs of reggies playsand (sump is made out of 4mm glass) it was all good. The next afternoon - not so good. I had water everywhere in my lounge and it turned out to be the DSB sump. It has a good ol crack right through the middle of it. Now my question. How do I fix it ? Do I cut off the sillicone holding the base glass and put a new one in and silicone it back or do I have to do the whole tank over ???? I was thinking of replacing the base glass with about 6-8 mm atleast ? The weird thing is I did put in a pine sheet and polestyrene for support and their is a steel support running underneath the area where the crack is.The tank is also supported on the sides aswell by the frame ! Below is a before pick of the sump to give you an idea.
All help will greatly be appreciated!

Hi guys.
Does anybody know where to buy bulkheads in Cape Town, without having to explain to the guys that I'm not looking for light fittings?
Another thing, I'm designing a 1.3L x 0.6W x 0.5H tank. The sump will be in garage which is about 3-4 meters away. What size overflow and return pipes will be sufficient and what size do I tell the guys to drill the holes?

Hey guys,
Forgive me if i am just being paranoid..
My fairly new cleaner wrasse has a sore on his back, that may be a bite from another fish, but im not sure..
It ate like a pig this evening, but i only noticed it seemed a bit jerky and erratic after he ate. I must admit i noticed his behaviour only after i noticed the sore... so maybe im just paranoid. hope so. all other livestock is good.
He only seems to be jerky when he is chasing his reflection up and down the window, not when he is just swimming around.
this is the best photo i could get.. he's a fast one!!
If this were not a bite, perhaps a parasite, what behaviours should i be on the lookout for? besides the obvious head shaking, swimming skew etc
thx guys

i have a cannon 400D thats served me well but ive outlived its use and now its seriously irratating me not to have crisp clear shot. So id like to upgrade and was wondering what cannon bodies you guys would suggest.
id like to go 5D mark II but are there other sugestions i should look at?
which lenses would you suggest for standard portrains and a decent outdoor 300-400mm zoom?
selling house will buy camera sort of deal :)

my tank has been cycling for 6 weeks now,all is good. Added my first two clowns today they seem good just looks like my current is too strong for them, with my wave maker/fan. is it fine must i keep it on all day? how do i set it a bit weaker? should i switch it off at night?

Looking for some LR in the PE area. any reefers have?
-
Hi, hope you are well. I have this anemone in my reef tank, it looks like he settled under a rock away from direct light. I have a small nano tank(100 lt) with t5 lighting. I put him in yesterday and will feed him frozen fish tonight(silverbacks). What kind of clown fish live in them? I have 2 small clowns that were captive bred and they don't go near it. I also use marine snow for my soft corals. will all of this be enough for him, or do I need to use extra
suplements? what does this guy add to the bioload of the tank? If he touches the other corals and burn them, will they recover? I have mainly soft corals and one hard coral

What would it cost to get a 120x50x50cm tank make with an external overflow with two 32mm drain hole drilled. 6mm glass euro braced?
reason im asking is there is one for sale in PE but want to get the rough cost of one before buying it.

Guys, I thought I would write this thread to assist guys that is not sure about which of the three most known chemical treatments for aiptasia to use.
**Please just remember that this is from my personal experience, so many may differ, and if you have any further advice to add please post here. I am not going to discuss any fish, nudi or shrimp treatment here, this is purely chemical controll.
Okey, so over the last few weeks I drastically had to do something about my aiptasia "farm" that was rapidly growing all over. I had them growin on my corals, glass, pumps and of course rock. I used three different products from three different manufacturers to try and bring them under control chemically.
This is the results I found on each of them:
1) Product Name: Tropic Marin - Elemi Aiptais.
Picture:
Price: +/- R140 - R160
Package Contents: 50ml bottle with liquid content. Syringe and sharp needle.
Ease of use: The product is a thin liquid that is easily pulled up using the syringe supplied. Injecting the liquid is a real mission, as you must inject into the coral disc, trying to miss the gastrovascular tube, otherwise the anemone just discharges the liquid into the water through it's mouth. The needle is very sharp and one needs to use care not to hurt other livestock.
Problems: The real drawback to this product is the fact that you have to insert the needle into the anemone in order to treat it. This is very difficult as the aiptasia immediately retracts the moment the needle touches it. Also treating small specimens is almost impossible.
Effectiveness: If (and let us exclamate the word
IF) you do inject the aiptasia 100% right, it dies a very fast death. If however you get it wrong, which you do 49 out of 50 times, you puncture the aiptasia which triggers it to spawn hundreds of spores, regrowing all over the tank. I have also noticed that injecting one large aiptasia will cause it "die" and there will be 10 small ones in that area a few days later.
Pro's: The price only really, and it is easy to draw from the bottle.
Con's: Not really effective, as you need precision to inject right.
My Rating: 2/10
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Product Name: Joe's Juice
Picture:
Price: +/- R130 - R150
Package Contents: 20ml bottle with white thickish liquid. Syringe and sharp point plastic needle.
Ease of use: After shaking the bottle well, you insert the syringe and try to draw the liquid out. The problem is this product has kalk in it, which, no matter how hard you try and keep the lid tight, forms kalk creep and it bolcks the syringe. Then you have a mission to get the stuff into the syringe. Then getting the stuff out once it blocks up the needle is also a mission. I ended up pressing to hard, and then the inevitable burst of liquid and you really waste it. It does however allow you to carpet bomb the aiptasia by dripping droplets of the product over aiptasia, causing it to burn the aiptasia to death.
Problems: The most problem I had here was the blockage of the needle, and the fact that I treated only half my tank and then the product was depleted. The second issue was that it has alot of kalk in it. I accidentally dropped some on a LPS in the tank, and it damaged the coral immediately. I dont think that the product would cause paramater issues, however I am not sure that if you use too much, whether it would cause parameter issues.
Effectiveness: Kalk is a very well known product to kill aiptasia. Therefore I found that the aiptasia did initially die, but unfortunately it grew back after a short time, in the exact same spot. Also, if you do not cover the whole disc, it burns just a part of the anemone, which again causes it to release spores, causing it to reproduce elsewhere.
Pro's: The kalk does a bit of damage once you get it right, but only when you get it right.
Cons: Price per ml. And also the kalk that blocks up every time you want to withdraw or inject the liquid.
My Rating: 4/10
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) Product Name: Red Sea - Aiptasia X
Picture:
Price: +/- R160 - R190
Package Contents: 60ml bottle with pinkish thick liquid. Syringe and two blunt steel needles. One straight and the other bent 45degrees at tip.
Ease of use: The liquid is drawn up with the utmost of ease. The bent needle allows you access difficult to reach aiptasia, that sits on angles. You do have to have a very soft squeeze as the syringe responds very quickly to squirt the liquid. Again no physical touch is required so one can carpet bomb the aiptasia. I have even noticed aiptasia catching droplets with their tentacles and eating them.
Problems: I really did not experience much issues with it. The main issue with this product is the syringe that reacts at the sligtest touch, sometimes letting you squirt more than you wanted to.
Effectiveness: Once you have given an aiptasia a good dose of this, it is gone - for good. Unfortunately there will always be ones that sits in deep dark places, that will just respawn and grow again, but the product itself proves to be very very effective. The manufacturer also claims that a 60ml bottle will treat up to 100 large aiptasia.
Pro's: The sniper of the chemical products... One shot in the head and the aiptasia is down. It works so easy, and the bent needle helps to get to the more difficult canidates.
Cons: The price might be a tad high, but the volume of the bottle is quite good, so you get your money's worth.
My Rating: 9/10

As a an additional convenience to the reefers in our area RO water is available for free at Two Oceans Aquatic S&S. A max of 50Ltrs per week though will be available per reefer but I am sure that this will cover the needs of 95% of aquariums.

Hi all
I caught a pair of these 4km up a river in the Kei 2 months ago. Both are thriving in one of my systems but I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I am stumped as to what they are....
Note the large mouth in the second pic
Thanks in advance.

I would just like to get your opinions on the ATI powermodule vs the Geisemann Matrix? A lot of guys on international forums seem to think that the ATI is better because of the cooling fans prolonging the life of the bulbs and maintaining high par readings opposed to the Geisemann but I would just like to hear your opinions and experiences. The ATI is slightly cheaper than the Geisemann. Both will have 8 T5's with varying colours. Also how do you rate the bulbs of each brand?

Hardware for saleThread title: Hailea 4 x54w t5 light unit
Location: vereeniging
Shipping or Collection only: shipping at your expense
Photo's and description/list of items for sale: Hey guys i've upgraded my big tank to a 400w mh and t5 combo so i dont need this unit anymore, will rather use the cash towards stocking my new tank.
It a 4 x 54w t5 unit made by hailea,it has semi individual reflectors and cooling vents on the top and sides to release heat.
Splash cover not so clear anymore and has a small crack, so i suggest you replace it to get maximum light throughput. It has nuts on the top to mount hanging kit.
Looking for R1200 neg.
Notes: -
nb it has 2 reeftek tubes that are around a year old but the other two need replacing as they are almost gone.

Hey guys, I had some great success with a recent LED project, i thought id share with you:
Needs:
PVC electrical trunking
Loose LED's (i used 20 royal blue... NOT UV!!)
12v Transformer
glue gun
soldering iron
Total cost: approx R500
Time:
3hrs
Results:
AWESOME!!!
The only complicated bit is wiring them up correctly... Since they are 3v leds, i had to wire 5 banks of 4leds in series, to make sure the power is sufficient. They only draw 20MA, so just about any transformer will do it.
I will try to post some decent pics in the next few days, and will gladly help anybody if they need further instructions..

Hi all
I'm looking at getting a second lens for my 500D to compliment the STD 18-55 IS lens, I'm wanting something with a bit of zoom. I would like to do some sports and wildlife photography. I'm still busy saving up for it, but would appreciate some input in the interim.
What I've been looking at:
55-250 IS - R2700
75-300 USM - R2500
70-300 IS USM - R5200 (the one I like :))
28-135 IS USM - R4500
If you guys know anyone selling a good s/hand, please let me know, as I'm on a tight budget!
Thanks

Ive been using my lfs water for quite some time now and Ive been told that its Ro/Di water. Took some of the water today and had the TDS tested by a shop that sells water and the TDS reading was 225(no wonder Ive been struggling with algae since I stared). The TDS in our tap water is about 240. The water he sells in his shop has got a TDS of 3.
This is the parametres of his water. Is there anything unsafe for my tank in this water .? Ill only be using like 2 litres of this for top ups as Im using nsw for my water changes. Can I use the water.
Calcium : < 2
Sodium < 3
Potassium as k. whatever that means
Chloride < 5.
Sulphate (So4) < 2
Alkalinity (CaCo3) <5
Nitrate < 0.3
TDS 3
Ph - 6-8
Iron < 0.1
Magnesium < < 0.1.
surely this water is better than the RO/DI (or tap water) my lfs sells me.

hey guys
Thanks for all the help so far.
I currently got green star polyps on my sandbed. theyve been there for a week. Can I leave them there or must they go onto a rock. Ive heard and read that they tend to overgrow everything when you put them on rocks, so thats why I thought of putting them on my sandbed. Another thing im worried about is maybe itll collect crap and detris under the colony that'll be bad for water quality.

Hi Guys,
Days after purchasing my lipstick it had been in quarantine, I've introduced it yesterday and it was swimming and eating fine. This evening i noticed that it was laying on its side ans funny enough the yellow tang was trying to help it stay up by pushing it up when it tries to lay down, my PH levels where a bit high, i've managed to bring it down by switching off the light in the DT. What could this be ?

Hey Brenda
Ok about a month ago I bought a Magnifica, knowing about it's high light and flow needs. I placed it directly under my 150w mh, an right in front of a flow pump(covered). The mh is 6400K (don't know if this could be the problem). After I had the nennie for a week, the colors were great, but then we had to go away for a week. I left someone in charge of the tank, but I think he forgot to turn my mh on for the week. When I came back the nennie was severely bleached. The nennie remained in somewhat the same spot(directly under the halide, at the most top point of my tank). I was very crossed about this, knowing the bleached nennie rate I came to MASA and searched the forums as much as I could. The nennies foot and tentacles are still very sticky (sticking to my fingers even when I'm feeding), the nennie is stuck to the rock like concrete, still very strong. I started feeding it pieces of muscle, the strange thing is it ate faster then when I first introduced him. I would search the entire tank to make sure there is no parts of muscle that he spat out. I started feeding it bigger pieces(it's a big nennie, +-30cm length, moth almost 5cm) until I started feeding complete muscles, everyday, twice but I still can't find any remains any part of the day(The flow in the tank works that all detritus will be blown to one spot). It's tentacles remain very sticky and it's opening amazingly, also the mouth is semi open during the day (Read that in magnificas this is preferred), I also enriched the food with iodide and reef trace elements. Now my question, I'm taking pics every week to make sure the nennie is recovering, but it seems that the nennie is still getting whiter. Could this be from the lights, sometimes my tank hit temps of 28 degrees C, could this be the problem?
water quality:
ph 8.5
Salinity 1.024
Nitrate,nitrite,phosphate all 0
the tank has been running for more then a year now. I really don't want to loose this beautiful animal.
here are some pics
before the vacation:
When we came back:
2 weeks after daily feedings and light cycles, maybe I'm just paranoid, but another opinion would greatly be appreciated. The nennie seems whiter...
Also another question, at night the nennie has a redish foot like shown in the pics, but during the day the foot is a greenish to brown, is this because of my yellow lights?
Also is it possible that the nennie could have bleached so quickly in a week with just 2 t5 54watt actinic and coral blue?
Thanks for the help, and please I will appreciate any advice.

Hey folks,
I ordered a purple bubble tip nammie for my tomato clown last week, and this little guy arrived...
I did a lot of researchbefore buying, and know all about caring for a BTA, the problem is i am no expert but pretty sure this is H. Malu, or Sebae anemone, not a BTA.
I introduced him a few days ago, and struggled to place him in an appropriate spot, he kept falling on his head, floating around and landing up in caves and crevaces out of the light... which im pretty sure he needs to survive.
My question is; does this nemmie need a rock or sand to plant himself in, i have him in this spot, but havt to turn my 5500l/h powerhead off to keep him here, and he does not seem to "put his roots down anywhere". does this mean he is generally not happy with something, and is therefore trying to wait for currents to move him, or is this just how this species operates?
My tomato clown has no idea what this new thing is, and has no idea what to do with it!! he stilljust chases his reflection around all day!!
back to the nemmie... water params are all within good readings, possibly sal is a bit low at .022/.023... should i raise it?
Lighting is 4 x 70w MH (14 and 20k) 1 x T5 acintic and diy, LED suppliments (blue).
Any advise or info on this species (if it is in fact H.Malu) is much appreciated
regards,
Mike, the lonely clown and confused nemmie!

Just because he was unplanned, it doesnt mean i love him any less!!!

So my new tank needs roughly 20kg's of LR and at R100 a kg thats a hefty expense.
My question is, is LR just porous rock? I have 6kg's of LR, so if i put "dead" rock from the beach/rock pools in will it seed?

Ok,
So I'm new to the game but doing my homework.
I'm getting my tank custom built, 1500mm long, 500mm wide and 700mm high, with water level at around 650mm.
My goal would be some nice sps, nennie etc. (AFTER 9 MONTHS AT-LEAST, DON WORRY :p)
I've been reading/shopping around etc and I'm struggling to come to a proper solution.
I'm looking to use Giesemann T5's 54W tubes.
The actinic + has a Kalvin rating of 22000k (the blue part anyway) and 6000k in white.
What combination and how many T5's would I need?
2 Mid day (6k), 2 Actinic + and 2 Blues+ is what I've got in mind. (6total, maybe an extra 2 pinks for eyecandy)
Are the Actinic + effective replacements for MH's?
I would prefer to stick with T5's but don't want to put any strain on the corals etc.
Thanks.

Hey Guys,
I'm someone could assist me with this.....
I've noticed that the guys in the states sells off reef cleaner packages, eg liveaquaria.com
To Purchase something similar at our LFS' would cost a arm and a leg to get something similar. ie one blue legged hermit would average on R40.
Is there a place in the cape where one could collect similar reef safe invertes for use in our tanks. or buy in bulk at a reasonable price ?

Hey guys, Im going to start dosing just BioDigest for now. I will get BioClean next month when I have money :P and Im also paranoid about dosing bioptim at the moment because I have some cyano so I was thinking it would help the cyano lol ..
Anyways, the recommended dosage for my tank is 3 vials (600L) and my system is around 660L .. I have a refuge with cheato and I dont want it to die. If I dose 3 vials then wont the nutrients drop to such a low level that the chaeto will die?
@
Slagter, after a while when he dosed biodigest his macro algae died.
I just have some shrooms and a frogspawn and I will not be stocking any sps in the near future (will be sticking to LPS, zoa's, shrooms etc). I wanted to know if I should rather dose 2 vials instead?

Hi Guys , i went to go and collect some water this weekend at the Aquarium, went inside quick to use the toilet and walked past the Clown display tank , Lovely tank but 3 quaters of the fish were half dead , with a few dead ones to , my personal opinion is that the tank is hopelessly over stocked.
Has anyone else noticed it ?
Kind regards

If you run SPS:
1. How many L's in your DT & sump each?
2. What do you dose? Brand you use and how much ml or grams?
3. How often do you test, do you test only, ca, mg and alk?
4. Do you find that SPS is science?
5. Are monti's and digitata more resilient than other SPS?
Reason being I was tricked, i tell you scammed :) by Broder into SPS a week ago and now I have many questions and am more nervous about my corals ability to survive in my tank.
My only real dosing I use is alk 8.3 into RO chamber. 1 teaspoon : 45 L RO each weekend.
6 drops of iodein on Wen & Sat
12 drops of mg on Wen & Sat
5 ml ca on Wen & Sat
Also Bioptim & digest on alterating bi monthly cycle.
I do test, found mg down on my last test so increased dosage.
When I grow up I wanna have SPS. :).
Am I on the correct path or should I be doing something different?
Also if anybody has advice on keeping SPS and reads this tread could you add your experience / advice / shopping list of non commercial treatments for dosing to this tread.
Thanks to all concerned SPS lovers, I have stick fever and don't want to get better ever again, so no referrals to doctors for this sickness please. :)

So 4 of us dived Vechies today.
lIghty, Danimal, ShaneO and myself.
Water not great, end of Limestone only 1-2 m of vis with a fair bit of surge.
Nothing specacular, caught:
1) couple of cleaner wrasse
2) semi
3) striatus
4) couple of coral banded shrimp
5) Paraluterus Prionurus (Valentini Mimic)
6) Racoon fly
Saw lots of local flies incl aurigas, marley eye, black burnies, coachmen. Also black beans, goldies, tenenti tang. Some beautiful full grown dussemeris around. Bland as a juveline, but stunning as an adult. The bigest evil eye puffer I've ever seen, must have been half a meter long:eek:.

I stay in Durban and I am just finishing my simplex. I have a long kitchen, diningroom and lounge onto a patio, pool and sea view. So I wanted a divider between the diningroom and lounge. I was shopping at the Cresent Umhlanga and stumbled across Petland. They have a Marine Tank section and I thought what a great divider if at the right height. So I ordered a tank 1.5m*600*500. My question is "if I am wanting a shortcut but willing to learn from their team over time is this wise or not, or is their a member that could help me with the same service but is far more highly recommended?"
Kind Regards

Hi all,
Being bored during the holidays and after a visit to Jaco Schoeman I decided to play with an old tank I had laying here at home.
Tank Dimensions: 445 (L) x 315 (W) x 320 (D) (Inside Measurements)
Popped in at builders warehouse and had some pieces of glass cut. Later had to visit Robert Kukla to get some pieces of glass re-cut!
Purchased a sheet of glass, had builders cut out a section for the overflow, drilled a 20mm hole with a glass drill bit I purchased for the return flow (why do the LFS say this is so difficult). Also spray painted the back sheet for the sump in blue.
Not to assemble the pieces of glass for the sump. The water will flow over the overflow and in, down and up two chambers. Still looking for ideas for medium for these sections before I use bio-balls and ceramics...
I used some plumbing parts for the return pump.
Water then flows out and over a 150mm DSB with some live rock...(well that is the idea) before flowing into the final chamber that holds my heater and ATMAN 450l/h return pump.
Just gave it the last few lines of silicone and waiting for it to dry before testing for leaks.
Updates to follow!

Its time to start a new thread to chronical my new build. My
existing system has been stable for quite some time now (thanks to luck, patience and most of all MASA:yeahdude:) so I guess that means its time to start a new one. (or at least another one)
So here goes. The new build will be a FOWLR system so that I can keep the non-reef stuff that I so long for and cannot keep in my existing setup fo obvious reasons.
THe new build will be plumbed into the existing systems engin room, but more on that later.
The new build dimensions are probably going to be 1700mm(l) x 900mm (h) x 750mm (w). Its will be housed in a specially built aluminium frame fish room extension to my house and have a window facing design into a dining room inside my house. (much like my existing build faces my lounge).
I'm hoping to have starfire glass for the front glass and to learn from some of the things I should have done differently on my existing tank design.
Anyway - Here are some pics of the location and purpose built fish tank room being built today to get things started.

Hi all,
My first tank would have been a predator tank, but the wife turned it into a finding nemo tank :tt2:
So now I get to setup a second tank, a predetor tank!
First some tank info:
Getting a 1000 x 1100 cube.
Will be running a simple system. 3 compartment sump with DSB.
Scaping will be LR with lots of caves.
My stock list, feel free to comment on this:
2 Volitan Lionfish.
1 Honeycomb Morey Eel
1 Snowflake Eel (still not sure if I want a second eel
1 Bluelined Trigger Fish
1 Piccaso Trigger Fish
1 Queen Trigger Fish
1 Clown Trigger Fish
1 Blueline Grouper Fish
My first concern is skimmer. Would a TS2 cut it or should I get a TS3?
Second concern is flow, what would you sugest? I was thinking of going with a boyu WM-3 wavemaker.
Third is lights, would normal T5's do?
All your input will be apreciated!
Cheers,
Lean

My nano tank is not drilled:( so i was forced to use the siphon setup, open to the fact that a simple power outage, thank eskom) will flood the tank... BUt i tested the levels in my tank so if disaster strikes, my pump will run dry. But wen i turned off the pumps, the water stayed in the pipe? and no suction took place.. I turned the power back on and it opperated again perfectly:whistling: ?
NOTE# My siphon pipe is 4 times larger that my pump pipe. Maby this is the reason?

IM using this product to seed my DSB with Pathogenic aerobic and anaerobic microbes which will help with the breakdown process of nitrification, denitrification aswell as organic waste.
I plan to run a Low nutrient system so with this product inturn with carbon and vodka dosing, will cheato survive?:)
I just plan to use this product to Seed and repopulate biocultures when problems occur. But just for intrest, who has used this product and what improvements did it bring?

Ive bought a bag of Arg-alive for my new tank....It says on the bag that I shouldnt rinse it as it is seeded with Bacteria....
Im moving all my lifestock and corals over to the new tank, so I dont have time to cycle the new system.....rather relying on my existing mature liverock etc...
Do I rinse the Argonite...or believe what the manufacturer says?

my bio is simple... i love all animals and own a variety. its definately something id love to do for a living... working with them i mean...
im very new to marine life. My tank was given to me by a friend who no longer wanted it.
my tank is a 250 l with at least 10 pieces of med/large LR, a blue yellow tailed damsel, 2 green cromise, a domio damsel, a few hermit crabs and (the creatures im trying to learn about quickly) 2 carpet anemones and a magnificent
i have a hang on via aqua protein skimmer, a crushed coral substrate bottom and a small pump moving water around.
lights are 3 30w extra day high glow (akwa) and 1 30w marine blue at the back. is this enough?
the tank is 50cm deep.
the temp is 25 degees, nitrate is a little high, nitrite and ammonia are 0, the ph is very high (8.8) and i cant seem to get it down even with water changes.
the fish are all fine... healthy and eating well, even the carpets are doing well but the magnificent keeps blooming then dropping into near nothingness then blooming again.
i dont know what is wrong.
calcium is 450 and i filter feed them with sera marine coraliquid and occasionally some small pieces of prawn/shrimp/hake if hes up.
any advise would be great. im really just starting and i need to know more about them to keep them happy.
oh, the tank is also just a year old.
thanks again

Hi guys and gals.
I'm currently designing a new tank and would love some input.
I decided to go for a 1.3m instead of 1.2m tank so that I can fit 54w tubes. 600 high and 500 wide.
I am going to put the overflow in the middle back instead of corner, then have two inputs drilled in back.
I will make the frame myself and then cover it with black melamine or something.
This will take a few months to do (depending on cash flow), but I will keep posting as I go on.
Any ideas and comments welcome.

I have recently purchased an AM quad doser, i have read that there is a "trick" to set them up to work efficiently.
What should the configuration be, dosing canisters above or below the pumps?
I always understood that these pumps work best with gravity flow, when the pipes are "pinched" then the flow stops.
Can users provide some advise on do's and dont's to setup and operate this doser.

I was always sceptically:whistling: in regards to these liquid foods as the main ingredients were CA, ALK, MG, SN and very little actual proteins, lipids, etc.
Last night i put 5 ML in my Tank as my CA and ALK was finished and low and behold i got a crazy feeding response from the tiny Bristle stars and coco worms in the Mushroom rock that i have i could not believe it as about 7 bristle stars were filter feeding as well as 5 coco worms all at the same time i usually only see 1 open at a time. Oh yes and the Mushrooms expanded like i have never seen before
I will admit that the reef snow from Brightwells is an awesome product and is not just a balanced elemental complex.
Oh its also about a year old as i never used it and always kept it in the fridge

Hey guys
I just bought a sun sun submersible pump. The HJ 1121. I bought it to add flow to tank and I think I bought the wrong thing. Only saw its submersable pump at home. looked at the pics only in lfs. Can you use the submersible pump as a flow pump. Its shows pics of it in the dt.
Ive got a 130 litre tank. Ive already got a flow of 1000l/h in the dt so will it be too much if I add a 1400l on top of that giving it a total of 2400l/h. Ive got some gsp, mushrooms and a feather duster. should I rather just leave the 1000 l/h flow or can I add the sun sun?

For some reason the water quality in my tank deteriorates quickly and generally only looks good after a waterchange.
This is what the glass looks like in 2 days..
I think ozone will help me out here but not sure what is the best (and cheapest) route.
There is a Hailea ozoniser for R780, the Profilux probe is about R1200, but would I need to monitor it as this ozoniser is apparently not very powerful
Who sells ozone reactors and roughly how much or is it safe to run it through my skimmer?
Thats it for now. Thanks.

Hi Everyone
I need a "rough" quotation for a fish tank system I need with the following specs.
It will be for fresh water fish (one specie - aprox 250 per tank)
Size : 100cm (l) x 50cm (d) x 50cm (h)
Include:
- Mechanical Filtration system
- Biological filtration system
- UV sterilization system (Flow turnover rate of 3x per hour)
- Temperature control (35 degrees)
All filtration need to be behind the tank. So back wall of tank needs to be mirror.
Will be hidden in cupboard we will build.
I welcome feedback and questions or if you need more specs.
Will require 6 to 8 of these units to be built in June 2011.
I need a "rough" quotation for budget purposes.
Kind Regards
AJ

Bike is a R3 Cervelo Ultegra 2011
Size 54
I won this bike and it is now available for sale and collection.
I had previously advertized but the bike was not available as yet and hence the new add.
FOR R25 000 you get a brand new bike and you get a custom fitting with the new bike being in your name and the guarantee/waranty applies.
in view of the arrangement I will need to meet you in JHB North where you will get to take the bike in yourself for a custom fitting of a brand new Cervelo R3 Ultegra.

Hi Guys
I have done quite a bit of reading on the forum around what this could be, but I must admit I am really confused as I am new to SPS.
Iodine deficiency, Alk burn, something eating it? Whatever it is, it started out isolated to a single SPS, but now it appears to be affecting the ones close to it.
Some details:
Tank has been running almost 6 months. I dose with Brightwells additives
This particular acro has been in the tank just under 3 months and was doing fine. Pic was taken just after lights came on this morning.
Parameters:
SG - 1,026
Cal - 420 ppm
Alk (tropic Marine 7 and Salifert 10) - Don't know which to believe
Mag - 1350
Temp 25 -26
PH - 8.2
Lighting:
T-5 and 250W 20K MH
Flow:
Plenty with 3 X Vortech MP40's
The affected area is on the left branch where part seems to be missing/eaten chemically or by some thing else. The acro has a symbiotic crab living in it.
I would appreciate any help as I would hate to find out the hard way with a couple of white sticks left in my tank :(
Thanks....

And is this a sponge? There is one large one and lots of smaller ones on other rocks. Is this safe to keep?
Sorry about the bad quality pics but I do not have a macro lense.

Might not be able to post pic's from Agatti or the other islands as connectivity is 0, so i am told. Will update when i can.

Works like a charm, used it to catch a chromis without removing all the rocks. Simply place in the tank and chase/corner the fish into it. Because its clear, the fish swim inside it without a fuss..
All you need is an empty plastic 2L coke container and a pair of scissors..

Cut off the top of the container like so, cut the cap off as well(big enough for the fish to swim through)

Resize the bottom half if necessary

Invert the top and fit it into the bottom..

The idea is that the fish is able to swim in, but can't get out.. I did't include dimensions as its not important, just estimate based on where you gonna place the trap..

What will Two Oceans Aquatic S&S do for me and the hobby
Two Oceans Aquatic S&S is here as a service provider and a one stop shop for all reefing needs. The absolute goal of this business is to ADD to the experiance reefkeeping at every oportunity possible and at any cost. Whether you are located in PE, Richardsbay, Joburg or Swakopmund we will strive to create the perception that this shop is in your enviroment as we are here to service the entire Region and not only one city. Obviously the reefers in Cape Town will have more access to the store but customers in other areas will be services via couriers and other transportation methodes. The store has been carefully planned out to support the needs of all average sized home aquariums so there is no need to source items from anywere else.
-
Why Two Oceans Aquatic S&S
Well for the last few years I have identified a definate need for top class premium quality livestock which are quarantined to the highest standards right here in SA. It is a fact that the commonly employed practice of land today sell tomorrow puts a huge amount of stress on the livestock you purchase and is responsible for the death of a huge percentage of livestock purchased by reefers. How I plan to eradicate this problem is by quarantining all livestock until I am 100% happy with their condition before making the livestock available to the public, this will ensure only the best healthy, fit and strong livestock makes its way into your systems.

I was think of putting a small sump in the cabinet in this to house a small skimmer, return pump and heater, and some bio material. Obviously I will have it drilled and a return fitted. Sump will also have a small cascade filter with Purigen as main biological filtration.
Will it be enough?
In the tank, circulation will be provided by a 600l/h Hydea old style powerhead with sponge filter underneath.
This tank should be around 70 liters with sump. Tank alone is 56 Litres, and sump should be around 10-15.
Any other suggestions or "What I would do's"?

This forum has lots of information about starting up a marine tank, DSB overflows etc, Iv got my tank up and running thanks to this forum..
Now can someone please explain Coral: SPS,LPS etc.
I know what they mean, but i need an explanation about what is classified as SPS, LPS, Softies? Which coral should i start with? Which ones require an experianced hobbyist? Minimum lighting requirements for the different types of coral?
Im starting out and trying to work out whether to go fish only or Coral as well, but im absolutely clueless about coral..
Please advise, im sure lots of us newbies will benefit..

Hi all
I build about 3 setups now to house corals, and worked with different types of wood, height on tanks and lights.
Starting to get where I want to be but it always cost me a lot of cash just to build the tanks and stands.
This is No4, going to go the poor way till I get it right and happy with how things run before I will build No5.
Old tank,
size 90cmLx40cmWx45cmH going to fit slim over flow with water level at 39 with power off and 40cm with power on.
No wood for this one!!!! Metal stand
The sump will be 60cmLx32cmWx40cmH standard 3 chambers and next to it a Hailea hc-100 with a TS1 skimmer and 1200L/H return pump.
The lights I'm still deciding on, maybe MH 150W with 2x T5 unit or running 6x T5's
Want to house anything!!
What do you guys recommend?
I have all the above except the sump
-
Hey guys
I have small buggers like this in my tank, but its way to small to take a pic buts its exactly like this. what is it?
-
Hi all
I am upgrading my tank and don't want to have to go out and buy another 100kg's of playsand. I have roughly that much in my current setup. I want to swap it over but as far as I know you are not supposed to disturb the DSB because you don't want all the crap in the DSB ending up in the tank.
So the question is should I just wash the sand out really well and put it in the new sump? There's nothing in the DSB that wont get taken care of with some good rinsing is there?
I know I will lose all the progress the DSB has made up till now, I will scoop the top layer off to keep some of the critters but I don't think I can go too deep for the transfer before having to wash the sand.
Maybe the experts can set me straight or confirm my brilliance:P?
Thanks
Steve

Hi Guys,
Need your help here, already did loads of reading and understanding chemistry and relationships between pH,Alk and Ca.
My Alk seems to be around 6-7dKH, been dosing everyday for the past 5 days with about 2-3tsp of Seachem Reef Builder to raise this but to no avail.
Other Parameters:
Tank vol, 300L
pH 8.2 (difficult to see exact with sera test kit)
Ca - 400 ppm
Mg - Not tested this but hope it should be ok, as the Reef Builder also adds Mg
Any ideas will be appreciated and don't want to overdose :-(
Thinking of starting to go with Baking Soda (Koek soda) which I acquired the weekend

Hey all,
WRT Carbon Reactors:-
1) How often should the carbon be changed?
2) Can it cause damage by not changing the carbon or does it just not do anything?
3) How fast should the water be flowing through the reactor?
I have a small 400l/hour pump pumping through mine, but I must admit I haven't changed the carbon in 4 months since setting up the tank!

What would be the minimum size for a QT?
Surely we want the QT to me fairly maintenance free. Can water changes be done from from the DT?
I see some have a 2 foot DT. Won't that freak out a Tang if you leave him in there for 8 weeks?
I was thinking of having a QT in my other Living room, so it will also double as a dt there, with maybe 1 or 2 permanent inhabitants to keep the system going?
Can I put in a piece of LR instead of just nothing? I see someone suggested bare bottom. Why?
I was think of putting a small sump in the in this to house a small skimmer, return pump and heater, and some bio material. Sump will also have a small cascade filter with Purigen as main biological filtration.
In the tank, circulation will be provided by a 600l/h Hydea old style powerhead with sponge filter underneath.
This is what I wanted to use.
This tank should be around 40-50 litres with sump.

Hi Guys
I Thought I would give some info on the Profilux Standalone Doser that I have just got
This is an excellent unit and the build quality is top notch. The Doser does not need to be controlled by a profilux aquarium controller due to it having a built in controller.
I have a 3 pump unit and it has space to be upgraded with 1 more pump. The unit can also control an additional doser without controller taking the amount of pumps up to a maximum of 8 pumps.
I have found the setup of the unit very easy - First thing I did was set the date and time. I an event of a power failure the unit has a backup battery to save all settings.
All I had to do was make a stand for the unit and do the piping.
I used RO tubing for the piping and dipped it in hot water to soften the piping and then insert a smaller diameter pvc pip into it. I then used silicon tubing and connected to the doser inlet which is on the right hand side of the pump. The pump seems to run Anti-clockwise. I used a similar system for the outlets but used 90deg elbows for RO tubing courtesy of extra fittings left over from my Waterboy R.O unit (aka Marco)
I am using :
Brightwells Reef Bio-Fuel On Pump 1 and have initially set it to dose 7ml a day (broken down 24 times over the day)
Brightwells Reefcode B - Buffer (alkalinity) on pump 2 and will start the initial dosing at 30ml (broken down 24 times over the day)
Brightwells Reefcode A - Calcium on pump 3 and will start the initial dosing at 30ml (broken down 24 times over the day)
The Doser has an Auto setting that will automatically break down your daily dosing into the amount of times you set it. It will also stagger the dosing so that the Buffer(alkalinity) and Calcium will not be dosed together so that it will not cause precipitation.
If there are any people using the Doser - Please leave your comments and tell us your dosing regime?

I have to get rid of the tomato clown cause its not getting along with other 2 clowns and also the keyhole angel cause its not reefsafe. Hi
So as some of you may know i have had a Brooklynella outbreak in my DT after buying a fish from a sponsor. This is the second occurrence of this with two different sponsors. I think we need to open a dialogue to them and make sure they QT their fish PROPERLY before selling them. Ultimately they will cause the wipeouts of many tanks and lose business as people quit the hobby. Maybe this should even become part of criteria to be a sponsor or is that going a bit far?
Not every person has the space or money to run a QT tank and depend on the LFS to supply healthy fish
What do you guys think

Hi all,
I have a DSB about 600 x 250 and about 20cm deep. I have course sea sand in the bottom 3/4 and a finer sea sand on the top 1/4. Water flows over at about 25mm over the bed and feeds back with an Eheim compact 3000 pump. Is this the correct manner? Do i have enough flow? Should I perhaps add another 3000l return pump to increase circulation rate over the DSB.
My reason for asking. My tank is now 4 months old. I do waters changes every 4 to 6 weeks, and I seem to have a major algae problem. Today I had the water tested and found Calcium lacking, phosphates ok. Bought some Calcium additives and added bicarb to my return RO unit.
I want to get rid of the green. Is this going to take forever, can I hurry it along?
Please help!!!

Greetings all,
Been lurking on the site for a week or so and decided it was time to register.
I'm not running a marine tank yet but have been reading through a lot of posts to start gathering info on starting a new tank.
I'm running two freshwater tanks and though I do like them, I am certainly going to start a marine tank soon (tm).
So just a "thank you" for all the members posting on a daily basis, your ideas and advice have only made me greener with envy since my first read here :P

So after my nano cracked and the rush to avoid a mini flood was over i thought about just tossing it all in the trash but after a chat with a mate i decided to try again but this time with a little bit of professional help on the tank construction side.
I found a guy who builds tanks and cabinets and he quoted me for new tank with stand, hardwood cabinets, lights (4 x T5 with moonlight LED) for R3400 delivered and installed.
My last tank i did anything i could DIY but i just want to get going again with the least amount of hassle so i placed the order. Should be here thursday.
It will be a cube, 6mm aquarium glass, 600x650x450 done with black silicone (which is a pain to do properly i have been told). the back 50mm will be the overflow chamber with durso into sump providing 600mm surface skim. He's going to make the back pane black using abs with a comb on top to avoid fish flowing over. Basically exactly what i want after i did some more research after setting up my nano. So its been a blessing in a way plus i can have more fish :thumbup:.
Cabinet will house existing sump with plans to put in a bigger sump or a small refugium later on when i recover from the financial hit (student over here).
Lighting is a reeftek unit with 4 x T5 (2 x day light, 2 x actinics) with 4 x moonlight LED's.
will have to look at a bigger return pump maybe but should be ok for now. skimmer is still overrated so thats a bonus and heating is a 300w so that wont be a problem either.
Cabinet will be dark wood with brushed metal fixtures, lighting inside with some T8's i bought.
Idea's/criticism welcome.

hey,
My starfish is a little bit strange to say the least... He has been in my system for 6 months or so, and every day, when somebody walks past, they say "hey, your starfish is dead!!"
I am so tired of hearing it, but can't blame them either: he is always sitting in the strangest positions... he looks retarded! but a few hours later he is looking retarded on the other side of the tank!
i have kept brittle stars before, but never these so please would somebody enlighten me: is somthing wrong or is he feeding/chilling/whatever!

I can see by the layers of reddish algae and bubbles that things are starting to come alive in my dt sand, but not much is happening in my dsb. My tank has only been running for 5 weeks. How do I know whether there is enough light in my sump?

Hi, im still a bit new to this reef thing:blush: so i just want to ask a question.
I have a 12 gallon tank, with 1 clown and 1 cardinal and a shrimp, i have recently seen some long hair algae growing out my rocks, so i did some research.
some people say the emerald crab will tear up the algea.. some say they arnt even worth the cost and that they just hide under a rock all day.
while the lawnmower blennie seems to think the stuff is crack or weed.. and eats it pretty quickly:biggrin:.
but my problem is the size of my tank:( is it ok to keep LMB in a 12 gallon? ive seen many people that do.. but not sure so i thought i should ask

Need some advice ASAPish, whole back pane of my tank cracked about 20 min ago, was a week away from putting live stock in which sucks but at least there were no casualties.
Wrt to LR and LS, i have the lr in the sump with the skimmer circulating and the rest of it in in a cooler box with a little powerhead. New tank will be arriving thursday (big cube) but will this be enough to keep the LR alive?
What should i do with my LS (fine crushed coral) i was thinking now could be a good time to put argonite in to the new tank when it arrives but until i decide how should i keep it? currently its in the DT with water level just below the crack.
will post pics now.

Hi guys.
As from one of my previous posts a few months back, I've bought a marine tank. Unfortunately I had to put it on hold until I finished off writing my exams. But good news is that now I'm back with a vengeance and wanna get my system up and running!
I've hit a few snags along the way, I got my tank set up but because of the uneven level of my tiles (and maybe other things, like an uneven polystyrene board) my tank is a bit uneven. I measured the water level at the back and at the front of the tank and it seems as though the water level is 6-8mm higher at the back. My glass is 6mm thick and the water level is about 550mm high. Will it be a problem due to it leaning to the back?
Secondly, I got a really awesome 4ft MH lighting unit with 4x T5 lights and 2x small LED lamps. It is a ceiling mounted unit. Because I'm not very DIY, I don't really know how to mount this onto the ceiling. Does anyone know how to mount these units onto the ceiling?
Really appreciate the help. Thanks.

Okay after almost 20years in this hobby and several tanks later i have decided to go all out and build me the tank i have always wanted, with all the bells and whistles. there are a few items i still need but i will get those when the time is right or its really needed. i am also shutting down all my other tanks and builds.
So since my house is a mile above sea-level i thought the name was fitting. I have been inspired by Manic's and Adee's tanks and a few others on RC in the SPS Forums and decided i would strive to get mine to those tanks. I will be using my own zeo-way based on Brightwell Aquatics additives.
Here are the juicy bits:
Tank 1200x800x500 starphire, 3 sides viewable, skinny overflow, dual 32mm and 20mm return
Stand is made from 50mm square-tubing, black powder coated. I will be building a wood facade for it from a dark ebony wood.

Just was browsing the forums and figured I would stop in for a chat :1:
I have been keeping marine tanks for 5 years and maintained reefs as a profession for 3 of them. I am now a manufacturing engineer working with renewable energy. Reef tanks are my addiction :).
This was taken in December of 07
Here is the recent. My focus is to move to a sps/lps dominated reef.

Greetings.
Please can you advice me on the following. Today a long red/brown "string or thing" or something came out of the anemone's mouth. Since then the anemone has become very small and it looks like its dead or something. What was that long "string or thing" that came out of his mouth and why is this anemone looks like its dead, just laying on the floor?
Please can you help.

I bought a pink Acropora millepora yesterday and I noticed that there was a pinky/salmon coloured fish with goby like mouth and eyes within the coral branches. It is quiet flat with a high dorsal fin. Unfortunately, I cannot take a pic of the guy because he wont leave the coral branches. Does anyone know what the fish is or can point me in the right direction for an ID? Much appreciated

Could you please help me out, i've ordered 3 tangs:
Yellow,

As i know the rule is that you should introduce tangs fish at the same time to avoid fighting. My question is would it be possible to introduce these fish all at once, would it not cause to much of a load at once ??

hi all,
i have to thank everyone for a fantastic forum with bucket loads of information, i have spent the past few weeks sifting through it all and have made up my mind and changed it too many times to count with regards equipment, animals, etc.
i am upgrading my fowlr to a reef tank, its a 3ft, put in a overflow and connecting up a 2ft sump with dsb. my querry comes in with lighting, too much contradicting info so i thought i would ask opinions. i have bought a 39w dual t5 ballast with 1xactinic and 1x 10 000k. will this be sufficient for zooanthids, soft corals, mushrooms, anemones, etc. i plan on sticking to the softies before venturing into sps corals.
like i said 3ft, approx. 80-90l, sump 40l. still waiting on skimmer.
thanks again.

p.s any other usefull info welcome, and i have read all the posts for newbies, etc thoroughly.

Please advise on the best Filter Media. I have Eco Balls in the overflow sump of the DT. In the middle compartment of the Sump I have Ceramic tubes covered in Filter foam. My Nitrate is high.
Is there a better media than ceramic tubes?
Should I be cleaning the eco balls or the ceramic tubes, if so, how?
Should I add stuff to the first & third chambers of the Sump as well?

Hi guys
Please help, I checked on my tank this morning after feeding and noticed something flowing from my starfish. At first I thought it was flakes that was stuck to it, but when I had a closer look I saw it is a piece of flesh that is hanging on/out of the starfish.
It is a deep sea star(Fromia sp.)
Could it be that one of the fish bit it? The fish i have, a cream angel, a scopas tang, a bicolor blenny and a clownfish as well as hermits and snails but I doubt it could of been the hermits or the snails, because it was on the glass when I saw it. And I have never seen any fish go near it. Or what could it be?
Thanks
Keanan

They are way cheaper than most kits out there and the cynic in me wonders how accurate they are bec ause sometimes cheaper is rubbish. I'm not expecting them to match up to a photometer but do they square up to most test kits in accuracy?

I have some very small orange rics on a rock, that are closing up and releasing some kinda white slime. All my parameters are fine. I have other yuma rics, pin cushin, polpys etc and all those are doing well. So i am not sure whats wrong with the rics.
I have moved it to a low flow area and it is getting enuf of light. Any1 experienced this or know why????
thanks

This morning I received a urgent call from a customer whos neighbour was in need of some desperate help with a fish tank that had burst. It turns out that the tank is in a hair salon right across the road from me, so off I go to have a look see what all the fuss is about. Well to my surprise I find a full on reef tank settup full of lovely live rock T5 lighting the works with bath water in it and some realy realy large oscars swimming around. To be honest when I first saw it all the fish were in the sump and the display was empty. This tank is lovely in size 1.2 x 800 x 700 and built from 10mm slate, the leak was cuase by the incorrect wood being used for the base and it had swollen and cracked the base of the tank. I informed the customer of what exactly they have and what the potential could be and they are now interested in going marine with this system but guys what I want to know is what do I do with these other fish, they are 2 huge oscars about 20cm long and 2.5inch girth , 2 x malawis about 12cm long and one other fish that apears to be a small koi about 12 cm long. I am not in the fresh water game at all so is their a market for these fish ?

Howsit guys,
What is your experience with BTA and flow created by power heads? Do they behave well to direct flow? I recently added a 6000 LPH power head. It is not blowing directly towards the nennie but there is alot mor turbulence in the tank. My nennie is not opening as much as it was in the past and the other spawned? could this be due to the extra flow?

Hi Guys
After 2 weeks of testing - atlast, I have traces of ammonia...
How far am I in my cycle now, what do I need to look out for now?
I have been cycling for about 2 weeks now, I even have allot of Copepods on the side of my tank... apparently all this is good...
PLease just give me some refreshed hope...

Just got back from 28days at work and....
This morning after turning my lights on i noticed most my fish happily swimming around covered in spot.... i did the reading and looked at pics and is probably ICH...
The only fish i ever purchased was a cleaner wrasse, so ironicly the dude i got to keep pests at bay seams to have triggered a smally out break.
So i have a QT that i built before i left which has been tested to have no leaks that has a built in four part sump that will have floss some balls, some rings and return compartment.
I would like to start the QT using stability and then dose it using Cupramine™, i will then like to add all my fish to the QT and hopefully they survive.
I'm not sure how long the fish have been sick, but i think it is safe to presume that my substrate is well infected.
I will also be putting my star polyps and pink bubble coral in my other newly built frag tank.
So for my 2 questions:
Other than those actions, should i just leave my DT running as normal?
Are there any issues using stability and Cupramine™?
Thanks.

Ok, so heres a question.

I heard once that if you want to boost your fishes immune system, its a good idea to add one cal-c-vita to aprox 350l of water. can anyone olaberate on this.
myth or fact..... that is the question....

Okay, so maybe this is another contraversial thread, but got this link from a very experienced fellow reefer and been on my mind all day...
Bottom line.....
Get rid of all your Cyano and GHA with sailfin mollies...
In the past few weeks, I've done water changes, dosed Carbon, rowaphos, rowacrystal, microbelift, microbacter, and even switched off lights for 3 days... I have finally won this round with the cyano, only to be left with an outbreak of GHA.
It would be interesting to hear the experts opinions....

For those running OVERFLOW-> DSB -> RETURN chamber.
How much is the water level in the return chamber lower than the DSB?
I tried stuffing that white filter media in my return chamber and it helps cut down the bubbles...... untill it get's clogged and I touch that media... then it takes me half an hour to stop my return pump from collecting bubbles that comes from the flow over my dsb.
What should the difference in level be between dsb and return chamber?

Ok, I went to look at a tank tonight, and have decided to go for it.
Dimensions are 1500 x 680 x 1100 out of 19mm glass. With a water height of 1m the volume of the display should be just over 1000L:thumbup:
The sump will make it another 100-150 liters more but haven't had the chance to measure compartments yet so I'm unsure.
The tank comes with a super sturdy 40mm steel tube stand and the water height once on the stand is about eye level.
The tank, sump and stand are getting cleaned up and I will take delivery in 2-3 weeks, just depends on when I can get things ready on my side. Need to set up a temp tank so I can move over my current fish and get the big boy set up in the same place as the old tank.
I am planning a predator/fish only tank. If the coral bug bites again I have a nice little nano to use.
Equipment
Heating:
Two, maybe three Jaeger heaters.
Flow:
1 Seio 3200lph
1 Sunsun 6000lph
1 Sunsun 5000lph
1 Sunsun 3000lph
Might need some more
Skimmer:
I will be using my current TS1 and a weipro to start with. (Will not introduce any more fish until I get a real one)
Return:
Current Lifetech for now. Trying to decide on which big pump to get that will not rape my electricity bill.
Lighting:
Current dymax 2 X 250w mh unit (So if I really want corals won't have a problem there) plus a little Rio mini sun for night time.
Sump:
DSB with some macro algae. Won't go for a scrubber just yet. Don't need nutrients that low. Depending on the tank inhabitants later on I might need one but it can be added later.
Water I will be getting from two oceans. I will start with a 10% change a week.
I am sooooooo excited.
If I have missed anything let me know but I will have someone experienced during setup so anything I miss will be caught by him.
It's been a dream of mine to have a tank like this and it's here but now the work starts.:yeahdude:

Hi Guys
I have a bit of a problem, i have been cycling for about 2 and a half weeks, i have noticed small organisms against the side of my tank, it seems like a few hundred, but it looks like tiny specs, do i need to worry, cause i feel worried?
-
Right, so after months of planning and dreaming of my new tank, the time has almost come to set it up! having followed the forum for the last few months, and learning that things shouldn't be rushed, i decided to take my time and make sure i had everything before i set up, (and the fact i live on a game reserve which means i dont have easy access to a LFS!) My tank is now the last of the items i am waiting for, should be finished this week!
Equipment and dimensions:
tank: 900x550x550mm
sump: 900x320x400mm
lighting: 2 x dual 39w light units
2 x 150w MH with 14000k globes
Skimmer: TS1 (will upgrade later on)
Chiller: rated up to 300l (need this as it gets rather warm in the summer!)
and ya, all the test kits, ro unit etc is all here too!
Will keep you guys posted on the setup! Let me know your thoughts!
-
I have found 2 legs from a blue legged hermit in a rock, with a bit of thigh?? The tank only has live rock (3 weeks old), 2 x crabs and 2 x banded shrimps. Any ideas as to what could have attacked a crab? I bought the crabs
from the LFS - it was in a tank with 9 crabs. I have had them a week.

For all of the guys enjoying the late season that seems to be starting in the Eastern Cape, I have a word of warning. My GF and I parked at the main car park at Glen Eden on Saturday late afternoon and had a very short (10min) walk on the beach. Upon returning to my car, burglars had somehow gained entry to my car and stolen my camera and lenses and her phone, cash, card and glasses. Quick and slick! Worst of all, the insurance is not honouring my claim for the camera, as there is no sign of forced entry:(.
I've since discovered that it is a frequent and ongoing problem at Glen Eden. I would however be very wary of parking anywhere these days. It seems that the authorities are unable to control these sort of problems anymore.

I got myself a SERA Feed A Plus Precision.
Everything works great EXCEPT....
My pellets stays on the top, and normally when feeding manually I would drop it in front of a pump or something to spread the food.
The feeder is on the opposite side of my return box, so I do not loose a lot down the return.
Is there certain pellets that will sink immediately (I tried Ocean Nutrition Formula 2)
I thought about a funnel coming out in front of the return, but the pellets still floats on top in the funnel... :(

Hi.
Maybe this is not a thread and could be a simple question :whistling::thumbup:. But tonight i have seen something in my reef tank i have never seen. To me this doesn't look to normal. It looks like on my rocks and sand is growing a type of "green/clear" algea and there is bubbles stick on to it. It looks like this is starting to grow all over. When a use my stick to lift it its like a peal that i lift from the ground and the bubbles come of.
Hope it make sense what i right.
Thanks
Chris

Hi everyone.
My Name is Mike. From KZN, but since 7 Years in Switzerland. Brent Vinnicombe (brentv) and Ryan Vinnicombe (Reptpunk) have asked me to join MASA. Hello everyone!!!
About me:
Well I have been keeping Marine Aquarium for about 20 Years. And had a lot of Up and Downs!
My last down was last Year in Nevember 2010. I lost everything! Fish, Coarals … Everything!!!
I had a Power outage for 4 days.
Some Pics of my old Tank Dez. 2009.
So when I got back this Year from South Africa Feb. 2011. I got in touch with Torsten from
Korallenwelt is in Germany, they build Reef Ceramic. He told me about the Custom made Reef they can build me. So I send him my Tank measurements and ordered my Custom made Reef. After 4 days I got some Pics from him! Cool!
Two Weeks ago I got the Reef and started building it into my Tank.
Type of aquarium : Mixed reef aquarium
Constructed from : Glass
Approximate dimensions :
2000mm (L) X 850mm (W) X 600mm (H)
Aquarium volume : 1020 ltr
Filtration : Sump filter including Zeovit Filter
Lighting :3 X 250w metal halide & 4 X 80W T5’s
The Aquirium has been running know for one Week with Osmo Water and Aqua Connect silicarbon & Aqua Connect contraphos. Tonight I will do a 100% water change and put neu Aqua Connect silicarbon & Aqua Connect contraphos into the Aquarium. After one more week I will do another 100% water change and then Salt Water!!!
I will keep u all Updated!

Ive begun building my larger Nano tank to replace my Tiny Cube.....60Lx45wx45l so thats over 100l of water....so thats over 100Kg's?
My issue is that whilst building I suddenly realised that the tank would weigh over 100Kg's, the problem is I intended on placing it on my Kitchen counter. Would it now be too heavy for the counter to handle?
Im sure Im not the first person to have this issue....
-
Hi all.
I have been inactive on here for about 8 months due to a major tank crash in which I lost all my corals and my 2 anemones. Most of the fish survived but I did a water change, replaced the broken heater and just kept up water changes and nothing else till now as I was deciding whether I would throw in the towel or not. I have had a cooling off period to evalute what went wrong, can I prevent it from happening again and do I wanna try it again.
I really don't wanna throw in the towel and love the hobbie. I still go to the 2 oceans just to be around the tanks and I went to Zanzibar last month and went snokeling 3 times which helped me decide I wanna carry on but do it 100% right this time.
The things I was doing wrong.
- Two quality heaters.
- Not checking parameters. I got to the point where just looking in the tank was enough but won't do this again as my parameters were outta whack when the crash happened
- Tank, I will either be getting a medium sized, really nice show tank or a really large tank that I will not lose interest in (I think that is where my problem was I wanted a bigger, better designed tank and lost interest). I am just trying to work out which as they both come with their own costs that I am trying to evaluate. I am leaning towards a large, fish only tank with relitavely easy to feed fish. Tangs and such not frog fish or anything that I am gonna struggle with.
- Costs, Another thing is deciding on custom made or second hand. There is a really REALLY cool deal I found with a tank + stand + sump second hand. Dimentions of display are 1.5m x 65cm x 110cm(LxWxH). water sitting at 1m built out of 19mm glass. really solid 40mm square tubed stand. For the same price a custom made tank would get me less than half the size. The layout is good. Tank is in very good condition. Not very old. The only problem is this tank will be about 1000 litres and costs for upkeep and a decent skimmer scare me, as does the weight(+- 1.5 ton according to the calculator:eek:). I would hate to set it up and then realise that it is costing more than I am willing to spend. What would a FO tank cost to run of this size per month with 2 oceans water not mix?
Any advice or if there is someone selling a nice tank in the region of R3000 gimme a shout, 400 litre minimum display size.
PS, it already feels good to be back

There have been a number of threads/posts recently regarding the topic of re-introducing locally caught fish back into the sea. A lot of reefers feel that this practice poses little to no risk to out local ecosystems.
It is easy to list examples of the devastation caused by the introduction of foreign species. Most recently we have seen reports of the destruction caused by the lionfish in the Caribbean. The highly predatory fish are eating there way through the reefs, with no native species being able to control their invasion. A similar example is the giant snakehead (Channa micropelte). Native to the warmer waters of South East Asia, this fish is now abundant in stretches of rivers in North America. Its spread has been traced back to the introduction of just two fish into a small tributary. Locally, we have the European crab (Carcinus maenas). Another highly aggressive species which is out competing our local crab species.
Besides the problem of predators, what is of more concern is the introduction of pathogens. As hobbyists we know of a handful of diseases and can only identify large external parasites. A large number of lethal fish parasites are internal and infected fish show little/no visible signs of infection. Diagnosis of these parasites can only be done post mortem and by a qualified individual.
The problem with parasites is not new. A study by Barker et. al (1994)* identified 18 species of digean trematodes in the 39 species of pomacentridae fish they investigated. More importantly the trematodes showed very little host specificity.
If you thought fish were the only things we needed to consider, here is an excerpt from a recent study by McDermott et al (2010)** :
“Approximately 130-140 species of the > 850 known hermit crab species are parasitized by 149 species in 9 phyla, and 27 species are hosts for 17 potential parasites in 5 phyla. Among the confirmed parasites, 30 species of parasitic barnacles (Rhizocephala) and 83 species of parasitic Isopoda are known. Species in other groups of parasites are few in number: Apicomplexa 2, Dinoflagellata 1, Microsporida 2, Ascomycota 1, Platyhelminthes 8, Acanthocephala 2, Nematoda 3, and Nematomorpha 2.”
“Limited information shows that hermit crabs are first or second intermediate hosts for coccidians, cestodes, trematodes, acanthocephalans and nematodes.”
The list of examples is rather long.
What everyone needs to understand is that it’s not only the things we can see with the naked eye that we need to worry about. The parasites we may introduce into our oceans is cause for concern. Some parasites have complex life cycles, including many different intermediate hosts and may even have highly resilient dormant phases. Just because your fish look healthy, it doesn’t mean they not harbouring some viscous
I’ve spoken to a number of fish parasitologists and the threat is not something we should take lightly. Parasites have been identified in imported fish which do not occur in out waters. Pointing out that sewage or chemicals or man made structures causes more damage to our oceans has no place in this argument. Thinking parasites are insignificant and nature balances itself out, is also narrow minded.
We cannot be complacent or apathetic abut this topic. It is a problem and one that we can do something about. Re-introducing fish/coral/invertes is not a matter of debate. If you take something out of the ocean and put it in a tank that has anything in it that has been imported (including liverock), then it cannot go back into the ocean. Rather donate it or kill it ...or better still, don’t collect something you cant look after.

Can anyone ID this and would they be common to this area. Found them at the Southbroom lagoon today. And believe me there are plenty of them and loads dying on the side.
The lagoon is closed of from sea for about three weeks and these are still inside here. They are swimming towards the sea but they obviously cant get there as the mouth is closed off.

Hey guys
Im seriosly considering getting a snowflake/dwarf eel.
But first i would like to know the pro's vs. the con's of keeping them.
Eg. What size tank?
What filtration?
How many can i keep together?
Feeding?
If i do get it/they will be in there own tank.
Any advise or personal experience will help alot.
I did do some reading on the web but got alot of mixed feelings about them.
Some say they are good to have, others say they are nightmares!

All that I can say is that they don't eat. All the other fish is 100%. I see this 1 that is busy die 1 eye also become red. Ag please help me here. I don't want to loose this 1 also.
Feeding background.
When I bough them 1 lasted 2 days. This other one 1week. I tried flakes, pellets, frozen and live shrimps. the one that is busy going did start to take a few shrimps but last night when i came home he was not lekker. I took him from the main tank and put him into the sumb. This morning he is just laying on the floor and breath heavy. I rush to buy more shrimps put it in but he doesn't even go for it.

When will I start getting those animals and stuff in my DSB, or shoud I add them manually, and where would I get them, or should I just give it time?
I have 10KG's live rock in my tank, but so far I see no kreepy crawlies in my DSB.
Running for 4 weeks. Got 1 hitchhiker crab in the sump. Should I get rid of him? Will he eat the copopods?

A new member (M247) has been communicating via PM with me during the last week, discussing control systems to be used in a marine aquarium. I suggested that he start a new thread to get other reefers' opinions on this as well, but he is still a bit unsure about posting here on MASA, and has asked me to set up a thread on his behalf. So, without further ado, here is our discussion so far - please feel free to comment/discuss this further, and join me in welcoming Martin and his wife to MASA :)

Hi Hennie
Me and my wife made the decision to chuck the TV and replace it with a 1,8L x 0,8W x 0,7D Reef aquarium. The tank is still in fabrication and we have some
.lets say difference in opinion about the location of the equipment:blush:. It would be great to have all the stuff outside in a shed of some sort and only the tank in the room.
Best regards
Martin
|
Yes, that would be the ideal, but it is usually not practical.
I'm not sure if you've seen
the thread on my tank, but it would be an option to have everything either below the tank, and/or above the tank (like I did with the "crawlway"), and/or with a small "room" next to the tank to house the skimmer if it is a large one.
Of course, IF you have the space in an adjacent room or outbuilding then that would take first prize...

Do you perhaps know if it would be possible to check Ammonia and NO2 with a control system?
|
Hi Martin.
No, I am not aware of any control system that can monitor/control these parameters.
For what it's worth, once a tank is stable (say more than one year old) it is not necessary to measure these parameters (IMHO), as the readings will remain "zero" as long as everything is OK. I would rather (and do...) monitor pH and ORP electronically, and regularly check alkalinity, calcium, nitrate and phosphate. The ORP is especially useful as an early warning system - once you get a reading range differing from the normal, you can haul out the ammonia and nitrite test kits to check if there really is a problem.
Of course, with some experience one can usually tell by just looking at the tank and the inhabitants if something is wrong. I have not done a single ammonia or nitrite test during the past 4-5 years...
My comments in blue:

So if we summarize the requirements of the control:
· Control and measure Temp. Yes - vitally important, but fortunately the easiest and most accurate to do.
· Control and measure PH Yes. the "control" part would be to regulate CO2 to the calcium reactor (stop when the pH drops below a lower limit of (say) 8.0) and the dripping of lime water (kalkwasser) (stop dripping when pH reaches an upper limit of (say) 8.4.
· Measure conductivity Nice to have... You could add a "control" dimension to either add RO water of a concentrated brine solution to keep your salinity/conductivity constant (thus acting as an ATO), but in my opinion that just increases the risk of something going wrong.
· Measure ORP Yes. This will give you a general indication of the tank's wellbeing, but should never be acted on in isolation. Also, don't chase numbers - compare the trend from any given day with the average past weeks/months.
· Measure Dissolved Oxygen Nice to have, but expensive. If you are looking at your ORP then perhaps not really necessary.
· Control the lights Yes. Very convenient, and adds stability to the tank (in nature the sun does not come up at 06:00 one day, and at 10:00 the day after a party...). Use good quality timers, and make sure that they are rated for an inductive load of at least 1.5x your load, else they tend to burn out pretty quickly (if, of course, you are using electronic timers).
· Control the pumps Yes, but... Constant switching on and off of "normal" pumps will wear out their impellers pretty quickly, and should be avoided. Rather use pumps such as Polarios or the controllable Tunze pumps (but very expensive...)
· And maybe automated water change. No. IMHO this adds another element for something to go wrong (pump not starting/stopping when needed, changing salinity/pH/temp etc. too rapidly...)
I prefer to do partial water changes in person, and only after testing of the old and new water to ensure that all parameters match closely. This is also done as part of my maintenance routine, and the "old" water is obtained by siphoning out dirt and mulm, lime slurry used to kill aiptasia, cleaning around rocks, etc.
This is an interesting topic - why don't you post it in one of the MASA forums - then you can get comments/opinions from other members as well.
Regards,
Hennie

Hi guys. I have something in one of my rocks making a snapping noise, mostly at night and it's driving me nuts. :cursing: I took the suspect rock and put it in a tank in garage. The noise is out my tank now, so its definitely in that rock. I looked it over and can see a crab thingy deep in a hole.
Any ideas on how to get it out without killing it or hurting the polyps?

Hi Henk,
I've been mailing the guys around dosing a large system like mine (2500L or 660G)
I received this info...my question is, do you know of anyone following such a regimen on a large system, keen on getting some first hand feedback from a fellow reefer.
her replies as follows:
There is no need to switch off the skimmer or the pumps when using the Special Blend.
Dosing for 660 gallons:
Day 1 add 720 mL (24 oz.)
Day 8, 15, 22 and 29 add 480 mL (16 oz.)
After this the maintenance is every other week 180 mL (6 oz.)
The start up dosage is recommended to help the bacteria establish themselves.
This is recommended no matter the age of the aquarium.
However, if you feel like your aquarium does not need it, you can go directly to the maintenance dose every second week.
The vodka will not be needed; the Special Blend does remove nitrate.
MICROBE-LIFT/Special Blend is special in many ways. First it is a fully active culture consortium (blend) and the moment is comes out of the bottle (there is no time delay) it goes to work the second it is added to the aquarium to consume waste organic matter that is released from aquarium life, waste food, and plant waste, there-by establishing the necessary waste degraders to control water quality. In addition, this select culture group seeds the entire aquarium with necessary microbes, to filters, substrate and bulk water.
The addition of Special Blend will not only enhance water quality, improve filter performance, it will remove nitrate via a process called denitrification and it will do it fast.
I hope this helps. If you have any more questions please contact me.
Kind Regards,
Karin Berke

okay well the holiday got of to the worst start imaginable, checked in with the family, boarded the plane , put the seat belt on, waited for about 30mins and then.........as the plane turned on the run way.............first time in my life........KIDNEY STONE!!!........OMG!!!, that shit it hectic.
i had to endure a 3.5 hour plane ride, passing a kidney stone with no pin killers!
that pain is something else.....its so intense you break out in cold sweat and nausea!.......anyway, luckily it passed after 2 hours so i was left with what seemed like a bruised kidney on arrival..........lol........hectic.......good news is im om magnesium citrate and all seems good for now.
well e settled in yesterday and managed to go see our good friend Sagar "mauritius aquarist" who unleashed a tirade of stories of masa members who had gone to see him after my trip last year........lol
you reefers are crazy........i heard stories of 20+ fish getting sent in luggage bags etc etc......lol, makes me think of my early days in this hobby.......lol:thumbup:
anyway this morning we have our first dive and i thought id show you some pics of sagars operation............as usual, gem tangs are abundant, so get your local lfs to contact him for livestock.

Great idea to cool your tank if you do not have a Chiller- for those hot months.
Suppose with 02 packets of ice, this would also last longer than putting frozen bottles in your sump;)

I have some good success with my first few SPS's, but have been attracted to the vibrant colours of the zoanthids family. I also notice that the SPS's higher up on my LR seems to do better than those lower down (lighting I suppose).
So would it make sense to maybe populate the top half of my display with SPS and the bottom with colourfull zoas, or would lower nutrient levels have a negative impact on the zoas? I am using SpecialBlend with vodka.

Attention: East Coast rock lobster, mussel, oyster, mud crab and mollusc / general bait permit holders
Your help is urgently needed with a survey of harvesting efforts of shellfish from January to March 2011. This is part of a long-term monitoring project by the Oceanographic Research Institute to improve fishery management.
Please complete the quick survey on the ORI website (
www.ori.org.za), click on INVERT SURVEY. All participants in this survey and another two surveys in July and October will be entered into a lucky draw for the following prizes:
First prize: Two uShaka Platinum Passes – free entry into Sea World and Wet ‘n Wild for a whole year
Second prize: Sea World Meet a Dolphin experience for two people
Third prize: A choice of one Island adventure experience (Xpanda Shark dive, Ocean Walker and Avis Snorkel Lagoon – subject to availability) for two people at Sea World
Four consolation prizes: Two Sea World / Wet ‘n Wild combo tickets:001_smile:
The prize draw will be on 16 January 2012 at the Oceanographic Research Institute and winners will be contacted by phone before 31 January 2012. To qualify for the prizes you must have an East Coast rock lobster, mussel, oyster, mud crab or mollusc / general bait permit and complete in full the survey about your harvesting activities from January to March 2011. The questionnaire should take no longer than five minutes. Please complete the survey even if you caught nothing – this information is important. You may only complete the questionnaire once per survey, but are allowed to participate in all of the 2011 surveys (in April, July and October 2011) and improve your chance of winning a prize. Please fill in your personal details in full and provide a phone number where you can be contacted between 16-31 January 2012 during office hours. Your information will remain confidential.
Thank you very much for your help.thanksani

Hey all,
Going to build a box around my stand to hide the sump. Want to use dark wood or a wood i can stain for a dark finish with brushed aluminium handles.
What is a water safe wood to use? Marine ply? what is the recommended thickness?
It will not be weight baring and will be help on by magnets for easy removal.
Thanks :)

Hi guys,
I need to stick a light in my fuge its inside a cabnet, 40*40*40cm
What is the most sufficient and most economical lighting to put inside, is Kelvin rating important for a fuge?
-
After the comments on my other thread , plus loads of reading (on the internet though...so taking at face value), some measuring etc etc I have decided on going the shallow route.
Here is what I have in mind:
DT (if you would call it that)
1600 l x 700 w x 300 h (water at 280), slim overflow at 700 side
Sump
1500 x 600 x 600
Going to try and squeeze another 200 L from here
Skimmer
Either the ReefOcto Orca 80 (not worried about rating as I will be using Microbelift dosing as well loads of biological filtration)
OR
Skimz 121....
Flow
2 x Tunze fitted on the opposite side of the overflow to create "wave effect"
Lighting
Will be T 5, thinking 4 x 80 W..suggestions ????
Inmates
Some schooling fish, cardinals, chromis (although they would probably stop schooling when grown) , MAYBE a flame angel , MAYBE a dwarf lion
Lots of Zoas on the rocks, some LPS and a nennie squat square in the middle
Stand will be 1 mtr high for viewing from seated position
Lets see how this goes

Been reading a few posts about how tangs , sea hares , etc will assist in controlling nuisance algae.
I would just like to hear the overall thoughts on going using / acquiring LS to control an underlying issue.
What I mean is , if you advocate / do it ...why, if you disagree also why.

Hi Guys
What do Copperbands eat? Bought myself a Copperband this weekend and LFS said that it is used to feeding on Brine Shrimp. I have fed Brine, Nori, pellets and frozen mussels, but I cannot see this fish eat any of it.
I have noticed though that it seems to pick at the live rock in the tank.
Any advice or recommendations please?

I have a problem with a Bangai Cardinal biting my 13 year old Pyjama Cardinal. The Bangai was added 3 months back after a friend shut down his tank. The Pyjama know under my huge Monti and the Bangai harrasing it all the time. I dont jknow how strong the Pyjama Cardinals are and can take the hiding. The other problem I had is sorted after the Powder Blue suddenly started fighting with my 13 year old Tomato Clown, finally chasing it out of its territory behind the tank. That fight carried on for coulpe of weeks but the Clown hard as nails.

Ok I would like to hear some comments or suggestions as I really cant make up my mind.
I have space for any of the two tanks....but sadly not both !
Option 1
Cube 650 sq x 500 h
Option 2
Shallow type setup 1500 x 700 x 300 high
Stocking options is also something you can comment on

I've just received my new Tunze pumps and controller and would like to thank George for the great service!
It's nice to get good and fast service - keep up the good work:thumbup:
I don't know if someone have used the 7096 controller with Win 7 64bit yet, but I tried it on my machine and windows couldn't connect to the controller.
It seems like the driver supplied on the cd (website has same version for download) does not work with Win 7 64bit.
If someone has the same issue, they can fix it by following these steps (the controller must be plugged in):
1) download the USB to UART driver from here:
Virtual COM Port Drivers (get the latest 64bit one)
2) Extract to a folder somewhere on pc
3) Go to device manager and look for the "FTD232" device with a "!"
4) Right-click and select "update driver"
5) choose "browse computer for driver software" and point it to folder created in no.2
6) wait for install
7) another icon with "!" will appear in device manager (I think the name is "com port driver" or something similar)
8) follow steps 4 to 6 again
That should do it. The application should now be able to connect to the controller.
Hope this can help someone:)

Number two : 918L x 605W x 300H
Running ATS
2 x 45w Energy Saver
1 x 25w Energy Saver
Lights : 150w Metal Halide 14000K (Reeftek)
4 T5 39W
DSB : Yes
Pumps : For water flow in DT
2 x 5000 Sunsun
2 x 3000 Sunsun
Return : 3500l/h Dophin
Ok but enough chatting here's some pics

It has long been advised in this industry that a quarantine set up for new arrivals to a settled reef system is not at all a bad idea. I am in agreament to this and after my own research I have set up the same for the pupose of ensuring that new arrivals are eating and show no signs of infection. Over a 14 day period one can be satisfied with the out come before release to the reef setup. I have had both success and failure in my endeavours, but mostly success. I have ruled my failures to poor purchase or poor in store tank water handling conditions. I have just added a much desired regal tank of approximately 4 '' to the auarantine setup wich is approximatley 100litre plus with wear filtration and flouresent lighting. Water can be directed by plumbed system from main tank as well as shut of for independant operation and treatment as filter media can be removed. There is no substrate to permit parasite incubation but there is live rock retreats for shy arrivals such as the regal tang. It was noted after a quick check that the SG of the bagged fish was 1015 and as such I lowered the quarantine SG to 1018 as close as possible whilst maintiaing kh of 9.
This tang has been in for two days and has only briefly displayed himself for the rest of the time the fish remains hidden within the retreat areas of the tank. My research has revealed that at first this speciman can be very shy and wll with time come out from hidding, also that this speciman is very prone to parasite infection - white spot. There is no other individuals in quarantine and A diet if brine shrimp soaked with LIPOVIT and green sea veggies strapped to the live rock is what has been offered but not very well received. Live brine is the next step but I am concerned about the progess after two days and the outcome if the tang does not start to eat. There is no sign of infection and the tang is not showing any imediate signs of thinig. I also wittnessed the fish eat at the time of purchase.
Can anyone dispense some more advice perhaps there is soemthing I am missing all the help appreciated

I was thinking of having this tank drilled, overflow added
and a sump inserted in the cabinet.
To be used as quarantine/frag tank.
What will I be able to keep in the tank if I want to use it for that purpose.
With sump it should be around 70 to 80 litres (Tank is 48 Litres)

I have two options that i want to run passed the gurus.
1) 2 x 24W T5 unit - R600.
2) 4 x 24W T5 unit, with moonlight LED's and built in fan. - R1350.
Its for my tank which is 600x300x300 (50L).
I dont mind spending extra and going for the extra T5's ONLY IF it will benefit my corals in the end? or would the smaller unit be more than enough?
Can you have too much light? How will the big unit affect my evaporation?

hey guys.
There a new guy in town which supplies water. Apparantly ro/di also. He gave me the breakdown of all the stuff in the water. Can I use(I dont think so from what I can see but its worth a try) it as he is like walking distance from my house.
Here the parametres :
Calcium : < 2
Sodium < 3
Potassium as k. whatever that means
Chloride < 5. That looks high
Sulphate (So4) < 2
Alkalinity (CaCo3) <5
Nitrate < 0.3
TDS < 20
Ph - 6-8
Iron < 0.1
Magnesium < < 0.1
Aluminium < 0.3
He claims that you can use it and people use it all the time but I dont trust NO shop in Hermanus. They all here to make quick bucks.
As far as I can see its a NO

Morning. It seems I have found a hairy hitchhiker crab "Which I have not seen in the years my tank has been running -_-..." Which now seems to have grown a taste for my Pulsing Xenia Corals, the damn thing has chopped one of my Xenia heads in half and kicked the rock it was on over! The rock was situated next to the hole it pops in and out of. I need advise to get this pain in the backside out as he is deeply burrowed into a big rock which I cant remove. Either that or my Snowflake Eel is going to have to find alternative food sources very quickly :whistling: j/ks

hey guys.
I have recently changed my substrate from crushed coral to fine sand. Now my clown does this funny thing. He will swim towards the sand and then lowers its tail and wiggles it that it looks like a sandstorm.(hope it makes sense) He only does it in the corners and only once in a while. He is very healty and eats probably the most out of all the fish so I dont think he is sick. Hes been doing it for a few months now. Almost like hes building a nest:lol: or hes trying to find food in there. I tried to take a pic but as soon as I get the camera he wont do it.

I've wanted to try breeding Berghia nudibranches for several years. I finally got all my permits together and brought them back from the USA on a business trip. The customs guy at Cape Town International scrunched up his nose. "Slugs?". "Yeah, slugs".
Anyway, here they are:
I brought in 6, but 3 of them snuffed it. They're not so easy. The remaining 3 are doing well and producing lots of egg ribbons, so hopefully I'll have some babies soon.

Hi All. Thanks to all of you for this great forum, it been a great help in getting me started. I have been reading and following many threads in this forum and i favour the big stuff like Glynn, Robvdv, Sean, Shawn and many others. So i have decided to start.
I have been keeping freshwater fish for many years now and have made the jump to marines.
I have decided to covert one of my double garages into a mancave ( hence the tital ) in the meantime while i am extending my house( where the proper mancave will be ).
I have started with a 2.4x0.84x0.75 tank ( secondhand ) to learn with and i have 2 x 7 000 l tanks that i got from the old Durban Seaworld. One will be for my American Cichlids and the other for Marines. But for now its just the 2.4 tank that will have water in.
I have alot of pictures for you guys so i will do my best to uplaod as many as possible.
Thanks Calvin

We have 2x VorTech MP40wES 2nd hand units (as good as new) available at a great saving...
3 Months old...they have been properly cleaned, serviced and replaced o-rings, ceramic washer etc, in excellent working condition and still under full warranty!
R3500 each (shipping can be arranged)
PM me if interested... :)
Here's the Specs:
The award-winning technology of the MP40w ES provides wireless operation on tanks between 50 and 500+ gallons, producing 1,000 to 3,200 gallons per hour of flow and smallest in-tank footprint for full-size reef aquariums.
The Wireless Wave Driver enables wireless coordination and enhanced functionality between multiple VorTech units right out of the box, with no extra equipment to buymaking it the most effective solution on the market for larger aquariums.
Operational Modes
Constant Speed Mode - Pump runs continuously at a constant speed which can be set by the user.
EcoSmart Nutrient Transport Mode (NTM) - A two phase program to promote maximum health and nutrient export, as well as increased growth for corals. Alternates between a resonant standing wave and a surge effect to stir up and export nutrients.
EcoSmart Tidal Swell Mode (TSM) - Creates a harmonic balance in your aquarium reminiscent of the changing flow conditions that would be found in nature. Flow varies from left to right, right to left, calm, and ends with a great surge.
Reef Crest Random Mode - Reef Crest Random Mode simulates the high-energy conditions of a natural reef crest environment.
Lagoonal Random Mode - Simulates the gentler reef zone found in a natural lagoon.
Short Pulse Mode - Allows for wave pulse timings between 0.3 and two seconds, enabling the creation of FAST alternating flow throughout the tank. Use this mode to create a resonant standing wave.
Long Pulse Mode - Allows for wave pulse timings of between 2 seconds and 60 seconds, enabling the creation of slow alternating flow throughout the tank.
Feed Mode - Slows down pump to allow user to feed aquarium. User can select the duration and speed for Feed Mode.
Night Mode - Automatically reduce speed and operates continuously at that speed for a period of time during the night. User can select the duration and speed for Night Mode.
Battery Backup Mode - When used with our battery backup accessory, the VorTech pump will switch to Battery Backup Mode in the event of a power outage and will operate at a user set speed. The LEDs on your EcoSmart driver will count down to indicate how much power is available within the battery.
Auto-Dim - LEDs are turned off and display knob dimmed significantly, but pump functions in its current mode. User can program how long after use before the driver enters Auto-Dim.
On/Off Switch - Tap the on/off switch to turn off and turn on a pump. Hold this button to turn off all pumps in a master/slave group. Tap any pump in the groups on/off switch and that pump will turn back on.

hello everyone!!! haven't been online much these days and thought id give an update! Things have been rough in my area. The economy has sucked and ALOT of our older, wiser members are leaving the hobby. I am trying to hang on and am glad to see that most of you all are as well! My 100 gallon is doing very well. Too well as I am at the point of possibly having to trade out my two wrasse as well as my yellow tang due to size and size of their appetite. I hate to do it, but these buggers are ready to move on to bigger and better and the yellow tang has taken a liking to my LPS which is a no no in my tank! If i swing that way, it will be all the way. Moving my corals to the seahorse tank and making the big tank a fish only with live rock. I've always wanted a puffer, and maybe some cowfish. Just different, less maintenance family members.
In the seahorse tank everythings been great so far. the clowns have mated off as well as the blue chromis. No one bites me as strongly as that dag gone female clown, she definitely would go for the jugular if she had an opportunity!!!
other than that, things are great. Just switched to a six bulb aquatic life fixture over the sixty cube, really love the lighting! but i have to say was my BEST SWITCH THIS SO FAR IN THE HOBBY, has been to vertex skimmers. FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Been missing all the good advice over the sea... just have been too busy to get over here! i promise it wont happen again!!!!!

I put in a Boxer Shrimp yesterday, and it was dead within an hour.
I also have 2 Clowns, 1 Blue legged Hermit, and 2 Turbo snails.
Water Parameters
SG 1025
Ammonia 0.5
Nitrite 0.1
Nitrate 10
dKH 10
Temperature 24.9
Treating with Stability.
I had 2 hitchhiker crabs in a Piece of LR that I bought.
I caught 1 but the other 1 is still missing.
The Boxer was behind the same piece of LR that that crab was on.
I am hoping that the crab did it. My Clowns and hermit seems fine.
Is there anything else I can check for?
Tank running for 3 weeks now. Was started with RO and Salt Mix.
I have never used copper in the tank.
This is the crab that is still in my LR

Name and Shame here peeps... :dft007:
Was at Broadacres this morning for some chow. Friends had always told me there was a pet shop three that had marine stuff so decided to pop in. Was not to impressed, dead fish and aptasia.
Anyway that had an awesome green SPS that I liked so I decided to come back after eating to decided if I wanted it (forget what it was)
After returning and getting the frag, I was waiting at the counter to pay with my 9 year old daughter when the lady behind the till, rushed past us and pushed my daughter out the way and against the wall. Firstly she was very brave, but I walked out and told them in no uncertain terms to shove the coral.
Just had to voice my opinion. Don't people realize in these times they need to make and keep customers. Shocking!!!

Hey guys and girls
Is this thing good or bad? I found one when I added a rock of Zoas to my tank about 3 weeks ago, and I found this one today. If anyone can tell me whether it's good, or bad, or even better, a species name, I would really appreciate it.
I know the pic isn't 100% but it's not too bad.
Thanks

Yes that can happen
This was 2 days ago.
This morning, it looked like half cooked spinach. Mostly lost its usual stiffness and looked like the greens the kids never want to eat. Pity I did not take a pic.
A few strands that is still ok, that is all I got.

Hi all,
Last week Monday I switched my skimmer off to dose Herbitana in my tank.
So it has not run for 7 days. This afternoon I did a big water change. Drained the skimmer and cleaned the skimmer cup.
I fully opened the flow valve on the skimmer. Switched on the pump supplying water to the skimmer and switched on the skimmer.
The problem is that the skimmer cup keeps on filling up with water.
It is almost if the skimmer can't release the water back as fast as it should.
I made double sure the flow valve is open.
Please help.
Regards,
Lean

Here is a photo of my Upside Down Jelly fish (Cassiopeia sp.)
This jellyfish uses light to photosynthesise and is thus fed by algae inside the body. It also has the ability to capture prey by excreting a mucus / slime in which plankton is trapped and consumed.
They do not swim around much, and will just lie in one place and pulsate every few seconds. It does not really sting humans like others, and I have touched it a few times with no sting... :whistling:
If anyone has any other information on them please feel free to post.
Thanks

I have ordered my new tank and am getting my stand made up at the moment.
The tank is 1.8m x .7 wide and.65 high, the sump is 100 x .5 x .5.
The decision I am now faced with is what skimmer should I get. I currently have a Aqua Medic Turboflotor Multi SL and am thinking of getting a AM Turboflotor Blue 3000. Any one used these before?
The other alternative is the Reef Octo 5000 Bubble Blaster (secondhand). The only thing that puts me off is the size - uses up a lot of space in the sump, headroom needed under the tank and I believe a mission to get out of the sump to clean. I need to make a decision on the skimmer soon so your advice would be appreciated. :)

I finally found a BTA yesterday! The guy at the LFS said it's a "Purple Tip Bubble Anemone" - I'm not able to find any info on it though, and have only heard about a RBTA and GBTA. This ons is al olive green/light brown, with very light (almost fluorescent) bulbs, with a bright pink dot on the tip. Amazing how the tentacles change according to day/night. He's has moved to under a ledge where I guess he'll be for a while until he finds a spot he likes.
I read on another forum that anemones settle in better when they have a clown to host, I'm assuming it's because of the feeding or simply he'll feel more "at home" with natural things happening around him?
I want to get a clownfish today, and read that in nature the Maroon and Tomato clowns are most often found with the BTA's. Can I keep two of either Maroon or Tomato clowns? Which clowns would be the better option and why?

Hi Guys,
As we all know, there's more pic addicts on this site than on photography forums. I would like to propose a competition which we could all participate in.
How about a monthly competition where sponsors give away a first, second and third prize for the best pics sent in based on a specific topic, say one month its hermit crabs, another its rics, etc....
We have a few sponsors on this forum, and basically their only advertising medium is by letting us know when stocks arrive, etc... If sponsors could offer us... The Marine Aquarist the opportunity to win something back, wouldn't that be a means to increase turnovers, etc...
I see we did have polls in the past on the forum, which could be a means to get votes in.... But the emphasis must be on the sponsor's means to create awareness, sales, etc...
What do you guys think?

HI all,
I was lucky enough to be part of an awesome tank tour on Thursday night, It was organised by my local LFS in Hillcrest (Nigel and Ralph, it was ).
The tour started off at the LFS and took us to 5 tanks in the area. I must say, the tanks were AWESOME!!! Good going guys ;)
So I thought I should share some of the pics....
PS: Some of these tanks are MASA members, but don't think they want to be named, if you would like to come forward, its their choice.

I've decided to create this thread to detail my scrubber build and to track the progress of the ATS.
First off, some functional criteria for my ATS:
Simple to make
Easy to clean
Use as little power as possible
I took some measurements of the space available under my stand and went and bought a container that matched the available space the closest. So I tried to fit the container under the stand, but realised that it would become a mission to maintain the scrubber since it would have been too close to the top of the stand (the container was about 400mm high)
I went container hunting again and bought a big jim toolbox:biggrin:
The measurements are as follows:
LxWxH: 470mm x 240mm x 200mm
This one fitted perfectly under the stand in such a way that is not really in the way of anything apart from being in front of the sump, but I can still reach the sump easily.
I decided to go with 2 single sided screens, with lights between the 2 screens.
To keep the water away from the lights I siliconed 2 perspex panes lengthwise inside the container
NOTE: Always roughen-up the plastic surface you want to apply the silicone to, otherwise the silicone will not stick to the plastic very good and will come off easily. I learned the hard way:whistling:
The size of the water holding sides is 90mm wide and is the whole length of the container.
I drilled 1 drain for each side and siliconed a 32 to 25mm plastic elbow into the hole. These drains where then connected to the sump via a diy'd bulkhead. I used some of those clear soft plastic pipes as the drain pipes. The drains in the above pic is the reworked drains (more about this later).
To irrigate the screens I used 32mm pvc pipe that I drilled holes into. The scrubber inlet was a quick release fitting that split with a T to the 2 sides. I drilled 2 32mm hole in the container for the 2 pipes to fit through.

With my first FW test 2 problems presented itself:
1 of the 90deg drain elbows leaked
The water level inside the compartments was way too high for comfort:eek: meaning it could overflow into lights compartment.(Almost 3/4 full)
The problem was that the drains couldn't handle the flow from the overflow.

Im very interested in finding out about growth rates for angel fish.
How long do they take to go from juvi colours to full adult colours:
months
1 -3 yrs
4-7yrs
etc etc
Especially in the below species :
Pomacanthus-Koran angel or annularis or emperor
Holocanthus ciliaris -queen angel
Apolemichthys trimaculatus - 3 spot angel
Reason being,if i start a angel tank what would be the ok(coz ideal size would be 5000litre tank) size for them to live in harmony without swimming space as a restricting factor.
Bear in mind ther will be enuff rockwork to hide etc etc

Hi all,
I bought 2x tube worms a long while ago, they are looking good but the one has kinda "shed". They are on the rock rock and the one somehow attached it self to the bottom of one of the rocks. Now it looks like it has "shed" and the worm is exposed but stuck on the roch... this is the back half of the worm. The front half still has the sheath and is very responsive and still looking good - must i worry?

Hi Guys,
I see there was a huge debate regarding the cycle process so not going there now however I am in week 2 of my cycle and added the Shrimp (dead) to my tank and adding MB7. I had a Nirate spike a day after I added the shrimp but no ammoina spike.
now the question is
1.) How long to leave the shrimp in for.
2.) Will a shrimp cause a huge spike in a 500 l tank.
3.) Should Nitrate spike before ammonia.
I have had the shrimp in now for 4 days. Please advise.
As well as I have a bristle worm outbreak in my tank. i know they good but I have 3 that are about 10 cm and the rest babies and a lot of.
DO i need to worry about that as well.

Can anyone identify this??
I think its a type of algae..???
Should it destroy it, or just let it be?
its about twice this size now... these pics were taken about a week ago.

I went to Rob to go check out his Greenhouse.. he did'nt want me to go inside saying that his tank is green and not much going on.. baby is sleeping blah blah.. when he went to check on his kid I popped in anyway.. I got so busted, he was not impressed and I was sworn to not tell a soul.
But WTF dude.. adding a GW shark. It was an impressive sight but I am not sure it sends the right message to reefkeepers that you can keep these fish. Do you even have the permit to keep an endangered species.
I managed to snap a photo when he was not looking. Rob, I know I was not supposed to tell a soul, but you have some explaining to do and I am not sure I buy your story.
