Long weekend in June Holiday @ Durban Spa

Hi guys due to my sister announcing expecting a new "frag" and according to "doctors orders" we all can't make this booking at Durban Spa on the beachfront .... It is a 2 bedroom / 2 bathroom 8 sleeper self catering apartment at the complex for the 17th of June 2011 till the 20th June 2011 ....(Not 100% but the 3 times we stayed there we had a sea facing unit and a blast of a time with indoor swimming heated pool, sauna) Willing to let this go for R3000 .... If you got 8 people this equates to like just 125 bucks per person per night and June 16th is a public holiday:thumbup: Anyone interested .... Mods don't know about pics on this one .... Maybe the actual reservation guest certificate?

Hey guys

Does anyone have a decent refracto or glass hydro that is properly calibrated that I can use to check my own hydro's calibration? I've just got one of those cheapo plastic hydros, and am not convinced as to its accuracy.

Urgent Clam ID and info please

Hi everyone,

For the past few weeks I've been helping friends setup their new tank (a nice big 5-foot one). They bought some mushrooms today, on what they thought was a piece of rock. However, the rock opened a short while after it was put in their tank to what seems to be a clam of sorts.

Below is the best pic I can get of it. I would appreciate any help and advice as to the ID of the clam, and to find out it's requirements. It has no color mantle, so I'm not sure if it's too late already or is there a chance of it surviving? Their tank has been setup only about 4 weeks or so ago, so still busy cycling. If need be I don't mind putting it in my tank that's 6+ months old, but don't want to risk putting a "half dead" anything in there.

I haven't seen it in person, I can only get there over the weekend.

i hope these guy's are not going to be a problem. so basicaly i need an ID or i just need to know what it is going to eat in my tank. it is only about 1cm long but i found a whole bunch of the buggers on a rock. i'm sure i didn't get them all. pics to follow
Yellow, Red Foot Anemones?

Hey guys...

Has anyone ever heard of a Yellow coloured, red foot anemone? There is one I've got my eyes on, but it's bright yellow and looks similar to a Yuma Ric.

Can anyone shed light on to the possible ID of this little guy?

Hi guys.

Does anybody know what the best depth is that a TS3 should be sitting in the water? The height of the water inside is easy to figure out, I'm just not sure of outside water level.

hey guys. I want to add some rock to tank for some coral to grow on. want to frag the star polyps and stick em to this rock. its been out of a tank for a long time and is completely dry. Do I pour boiling water over them and then rinse it with ro water and add them to tank or should i do something else? will it cause a spike in my system?

Haha.... hey guys. Just wanted to pop in and introduce myself. Ive got so many questions that i dont even know where to start! So i wont go post-crazy until i know where they should all go to keep things PC.

I used to breed and sell fresh water fish years ago, so im fairly adept in that department but my dream has always been a marine tank!

Bottom line is that its always come down to the lack of cash. Lets face it, 50k for a pristine 5 or 6ft mature setup is not unheard of. Well i STILL dont have that kind of money to throw at this hobby, so in the interim i thought i'd ask all of you what you think.

I want to start a 5ft tank and want to know what the most cost effective way is of doing this. Ive looked at the secondhand market and most tanks are scratched or have water damage or are just marginally cheaper than a new tank so i dont think that route is the way to go, since the imperfections would bug me.

Should i buy new or build? Do you know of any good, REASONABLE builders out there, or in Dbn specifically? I'm really keen to get started ASAP but purely because of cost i want to start with the hardware and build slowly from there.

All your help will be much appreciated :thumbup:

Hi all,

Newbie here, and now the questions begin..:thumbup:

So basically I have never had a marine setup so I decided to start a nano tank when I bought my Jebo R338 tank. 40L tank with a built in canister type filter and two T5 8w white lights.

To get to the point I replaced the filter sponge with seachem products which I cant remember what they are:blush: Some corse stones and a filter back filled with all sorts which the guy at the petstore suggested I get. Crushed coral and water I got from my boet to speed up the tank ect.

Now at first I wasn`t going to get a skimmer but after doing some research I decided it would be best.

The only decent skimmer I could find small enough was the TMC cataract protein skimmer TS-680. It does not come with a pump so I got one too which was recommended by the shop dude.

Now this is my problem: I set it up everything seems fine, but I just dont know if the skimmer is working properly??? It makes tiny bubbles in the cylinder which after a while turns into a vortex:eek: haha... Anyway, I seem to have some trouble knowing where my water level should be? Because it hasn`t made any foam yet and when I push the water level up about 1cm away from the top of the skimate tube it doesnt seem to make any bubbles...

I hope this makes sense

If someone could help me out? Or would like to make friends and come see my setup??:whistling:

Faulty Giesmann

Guys, I purchased a 54watt Giesmann T5 tube about 2 weeks ago. By day 3 i noticed that there was a difference in brightness. 11 days later, its only about 10% of its original brightness!! Could a faulty ballast cause this? The tube has been replaced, im just a bit concerned that this could happen again if the ballast is indeed the culprit..

Anyone ever had a similar experience?
