Hey guys! I just wanted to know if globe A is 14k will any other globe of 14K be the same?

I have a 14K globe which is bluish in colour but I need another 2 more. Will a reeftek or another brand give the same colour or do they differ the way a reeftek T5 and ATI differ? I heard that you dont get crap MH and they are pretty much all the same.

Hi all,

I have done allot of reading on this topic, but still not convinced that this is needed at all!

If you run a successful DSB with micro algea you should get the same or even better results.

Please point me in the right dicection if I'm missing the point here!

I'm sure it has a use, but can backfire on you in a bad way.
So would it be worth it spending R2.5k to R3k on this?

I will be running a phos and carbon reactor and maybe a Calcium reactor.

You input will be greatly apreaciated.

Ok so old is going out and new must come in.

The planning part

Tank idea

152cmL x 82cmW x 55cmH water level at 50cm

a cool 600Ltrs to fill

10mm glass, max size we can get here.

Still going with the slim line overflow at the back and cover my back pane with the Formica sheet I always use.

Maybe drill a hole both sides of the overflow for the returns ( first want to get the rotary return before I do that)

will rim the bottom for the pressure.

According to the glass thickness calculator with a safety factor of 4. very safe on 50cm water level the 10mm should be strong enough, don't know if I must fit a rim or not, best when finished to fill and see

what do I miss???
I have no clue about Close loop systems and don't know where the LR will be lol

What I do have so long is the following

1x Extreem in sump Skimmer for 900ltrs
3x 150W MH casings

This tank is going to sit on a wooden cabinet like I'm doing most of my tanks.

Hi everyone, calling all those clam fundi's. I got my first clam ever about 2 weeks ago. He or she is an awesome animal and doing very well.

Just a concern, I have a Midas Blenny who is constantly covering the clams mantle with substrate. Not directly, but when the Midas spits it into the water column it lands of the mantle.

The clam can't seem to get rid of it by itself, is it a problem? See photo below (sorry, quality of pic not great, taken with my phone.)

I have started dosing kalk in my tank (with vinegar) method, i have also been dosing vodka for the past few months, should i continue with vodka dosing still?

HI all

I finally got a tank lined up, will collect in August, I forgot that its my birthday coming up and my wife asked what I wanted so I told her! :whistling: but I have been reading so much about pumps, protein skimmers, salt, kalkwassers, lights, water flow, I have become a bit worried about what all is really needed! Please can someone direct me on a thread or some of your geniuses on marine aquariums tell me, once I get my tank, what will be next? Do I just add salt water and let it run for a month or what?

That i think it would be perfect..

RO top affect on ph

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone can clear something up for me.

As I understand when RO water has a very low alkalinity I have tested this.
Because of this when the RO water is store for a while even a few days the pH drops quite alot I tested some water a few days ago and the pH was 6.0.
If you use this water to top up with what would the effect be?

I have tried to test after a top and the pH seems ok around 8.0.
Scribbled, Personifer angels, plus, plus, plus, at Idol Marine.

Hermit crab molted, or died...

Hi guys,

One of the hermits I've had for 2 weeks now has been acting strange compared to the others in the tank.

He ALWAYS sits in once certain spot high up in the DT on some indo LR. Moving him anywhere else and he'll just go back to that spot, never seemed to feed much compared to the other hermit whom could probably eat a BigMac. :tt2:

Anyway, this morning I found some hermit legs/head on the substrate and his shell is in the spot where he always sits. Its empty though.

I cant tell if its molt or part crab, still has antenna and by the looks of it, eyes.

The only other inmates:

Other hermit, but to big to get to the tiny spot the dead/molted one now sits.

2 percula's
some chromis
some turbo's
boxer shrimp which I've had for awhile now and has also molted awhile back, he's A ok though but very shy, only see him after lights out.
Cleaner shrimp (red skunk one)
long spined urchin (violet banded one)

That's it, so I doubt he has any predators.
Pleae can you guys help me.

I have a 4ft around 250l tank cycling for a week now.
with 20kgs live rock, 20kgs crushed coral and a skimmer.
do i have to have a sump filter on can i use a canister filter on it. it is set up alread so dont want to redo everyting and am scared to drill the tank.
please advise.

Cheato issues

Hey ppl

I have some cheato over my dsb but it never seems to grow. Any ideas why?

Running for 6 months, got a hopar unit with 1 nano cube globe, its 18watts and runs from 9 pm to 6 am. DSB size is 150 h x 150 w x 600 l.

Is the problem that the lighting is not enough? If so what can i change it to and how close above the cheato should it be.
Mysterious missing damsel

Hi all.

I woke up this morning to find my azure damsel was gone, no trace of him in or around the tank. :( Searched all over even took out the rocks that he could have been hiding under. Last saw him at about 10pm last night 6am no more fish.
The entrance to the sump is way too small for him to fit through.
I was wondering if its possible he could have been eaten by something in the tank?
He was about 4cm. There is one fairly smal hermit crab,one pom pom crab,one small pistol shrimp,and two nassarius snails. He was looking good last night eating fine no problems. Also the tank is ony 2meters away from my bed and Never heard anything strange. Im really confused.
