Could Caynobacteria outbreaks be seasonally linked

Having chatted to a few different reefers (both from MASA and others not) it seems like there is a bit of a Cayno outbreak doing the rounds at the moment.

This has started making me think that maybe seasons could have something to do with this. Reasoning being:
- Everyone is running their tanks differently , so we cant all be making the same mistake.
- Some of these guys have run their tanks for months without any issues and have just "picked" up issues over the last few weeks.
- Nobody I have spoken to has changed anything major
I myself is having one, taking into account I use NSW , just buffed for pH , RO etc etc...

Any thoughts on this. I have looked a bit on Google but haven't really found anything
Dosing Pumps just Arrived

hello all, a new shipment of liquid dosing pumps with built-in controllers have just landed. They are individual units and can dose between 1ml and 99ml in incriments of 1 to 12 hours, or 1 to 9 days. Up to 4 units can be daisy-chained to each other to share a common power supply and the units will snap together side by side with internal magnets. All units ship with both power supply and daisy chain cable. We have also brought in spares and accessories, which include the dosing motor & head, dosing tube & mounting bracket for the outlets of the dosing pumps.

DIY Skimmer Cleaner

OK so the once a week routine cleaning of my skimmer felt like too much of a chore:P.

Solution - Invent a skimmer cleaner. For those of you that know my thread this was a wonderfull opportunity for yet another piece of automation.:yeahdude:

Step 1 : Use the two free stations that I already have on my automatic water changer garden irrigation controller thingie, via relays and a standard garden irrigation solenoid plumbed into the house plumbing.

Step 2 : Fit an old power head that I had lying around into my sump that pumps tank water into the skimmer cone via a micro jet garden irrigation sprinkler to flush out the cone by causing a very very wet skim for about two minutes.

Step three : Fit 4 standard micro jet sprinklers into the skimmer cup. These sprinklers are then run via the garden irrigation solenoid at full force to flush out the skimmer cup (with freshwater) as well as the excess skimmate cause by step one into the house drain.

Then finally setup the irrigation controller to cycle the above procedures every 4 hours. and whala no more skimmer cleaning required.

I have made a huge mistake by putting some fish in my tank that should never have been in there. The fish was removed and I have decided to ask on MASA before adding a fish to my tank again. Can you please ID the fish and let me know if it is safe to have in my tank. I would not like to have fish that will cause harm to any other fish, coral or invertebrate.
Urgent help needed sun sun pump exploded

Hey people!

Friend of mine just had a sunsun pump explode, thinking the isolation around wires may have weared away.

Anyway corals are all closed, mostly softies and some lps.

We're about to do a 30% water change, fish all seem fine.

Advice?
Who do you think will win if there is a battle?

Hi guys

OK, so I bought livestock from another reefer and also purchased some live rock. Amongs the livestock is a cute little snowflake eel about the size of a pen, +-15cm long.
I got a lot of respect for this little guy when he attacked a hermit with shell size of 6cm long and 3-4cm wide. He targeted it, went into the shell and just ripped it apart, never thought it would do that.

OK, so now I saw a little green peacock mantis shrimp in the new live rock, about 4cm long (in the same tank as the eel).

I don't want either one to die as I would like to put each in a species tank of their own - which I still need to do. I got place for the mantis in a big sump.

Do you think the mantis have enough firing power to take the eel out...or visa versa?

I have been keeping marine fish for about twenty years. I had a +- ten year "dry spell" (no tank) and about four years ago I got a 1,2 m tank and started again. I bought a couple of corals off gumtree and was introduced to MASA.

Shutting down my DT

I give up & had enough. I'm shutting my DT down until I can figure out what the hell is going on. Ever since I started adding special blend 4 months ago the briopsis began in the DT but in the mantis tank cyno began & both tanks run off the same sump but in the 3rd tank no problems at all & it too runs off the same sump. I noticed the skimmer is not working hard enouh & added an extra venturi on the infeed to the grotech hea150 which helped a little but not much skimate. I stopped the special blend & have done massive water changes weekly with no sign of briopsis backing down but at least the cyno has gone from the mantis tank. Even tried to shorten the photo period to 3hrs/day for almost 2 weeks then to nothing for 3 days which creatd a new problem & since then my lights been messing about coming on when it wants too but for the last week or so not coming on at all. I've added a couple of cheapo 21w hopar lights untill I fix the problem. I have lost most of mx sps frags & the zoa haven't opened for the last week. Maybe should pack up completely & go far away getting a bit much now 1st my boet then this & johan. These last 4 months have been rather hectic.
What do you think of this offer?

i have a bit of an odd one occuring in my tank atm..

the pictured yellow tang has some bruising near its scapel,(the skin is not broken or lacerated) i have seen it and another of the tangs rubbing up against each other but not violently.. not enough for me to believe that the scapel is the lone cause of this redness.. the other tang does not display any of this (which i would have convinced me that it was fighting between the 2 and the second tang would have simular markings) and what is worrying is that my bicolor had it at a stage aswell (where the dorsal fin meetd the top of the body..

the tang is also showing the signs of it forming along the lateral line..

anyone experiencing the same thing? i have never ever had this before..

i do need to check my water parameters and have not tested but i am comparing this tang to the others which have not got it and they are fine.. the bicolor hase been clear of it for about 2 weeks now...

I feed a mix of frozen and flakes but IYHO whats the better food for the fish?
