Bottom couple inches of sand/crushed coral changing color

The bottom couple of inches of sand and crushed coral are turning a tan color with a bit of yellow tint. The top inch or two are still white. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Light unit consists of 3 x 54w x 2 ballasts, 1 x 54w x 2 dimmable ballast, 2 x 150w metal halide ballasts, all fittings and wiring, 8 x 54w t5 tubes various colours(dont think there is to much life left), timer and a little panel I made to switch each ballast.

This thing is huge, its square, and it works like a beast! includes sicce pinwheel pump. it needs a tiny bit of glue on the cup because I dropped it.

Hi guys.Can anyone plz help I see that after I cleaned off the silicone from the glass of tank it looks as if its got a kind of oily surface the glass is not clear.What can I use to clean the glass so that its cristal clear

So after disaster struck and making a post about my skimmer breaking.. I get a PM.. Submariner..

It reads, I will help you out Mate, I'll Give you a bit of a discount, then you try my Vertex Skimmer.

What a offer, the skimmers are already dirt cheap, and I get more discount.. So I phone the man, and he is even willing to open up the shop late afternoon for me..Like 6 PM Saturday afternoon :thumbup:

So I thought why not share some pics of this skimmer.

I get home the night, get this sucker in the sump, plug it in and ... nothing? I'm thinking o-noes .. fiddle with the plug, but stupid me, I am waiting for a sound from the pump, my previous skimmer was a bit noisy, so am use to that..my wife looks at me funny, and says " what the hell are you doing, the foam goes on and off, stop fiddling with the plug.. :eek:

Noiseless in not the word, this thing is so silent, you can hear the foam/bubbles pop if you put your ear close enough to the skimmer cup.. not even a zzz, or a ee or a sssszzz from the air intake..nothing at all!

So I Leave the plug, and start fiddling with the water level. Cleverly it is done with a pipe, and the air intake sits on the top of this. you have a little t at the bottom, so you can set where you want the water to come out of the skimmer - it's also low, so there is not a single bubble like other skimmers, No waves from falling water, nothing. it makes a stream underneath your water level.

Get it set to where the manual says , and it starts making dirt dirty skimmate in about 10 min

this was after first 10 min ...

According to the user manual, this thing has more bells and whistles than an Irish Farm..

You can adjust air intake by unscrewing the white bit on the front of the pump, or the pump nozzle, the venturi then opens up more, and more air can be introduced.
The pipe that you adjust for the water level in the skimmer has a secure-screw , so once your skimmer is grabbing the gunk, you can use it and secure the pipe in place.

The skimmer cup is attached by thread, with a o-ring. So no leaks.

This thing is AWSOMENESS.

Sorry if I sound a bit like a kid, but compared to what I had, this is something else..
PS - since this has been running, my "floaty" bits in the display have almost disappeared :eek:

Hi All

After reading all I can take in about sumps etc... I still can't decide on what to do with the space I have....
I have 1.1M to work with and still want to add and ATO...
my Display tank is 1300L x 650W x 700H (water level at +-670)

I plan on keeping SPS and LPS and the odd softie or 2
and probably about 10 fish

I would prefer biological filtration as much as possible.

So far my thoughts are LR (between 50 and 75Kg's) only between T3 Skimmer and return.
But it seems as if LR only wont be enough
I've also thought of adding an additional level in, and having semi slow moving water over a DSB (water split from overflow) and then back into the return.. that would make it a DSB AND LR Sump...
Then everything else cross my mind Cheato, ATS etc....

Whats simplest that you recommend that would work?

-tank is just over a month old
-rocks are old
-substrate it about a month old(coral sand)
and ive been running the lights on normal times for about a week now cos i have some coral in there.

WHY this damn algea?? how long will this go on for?? and do i have to start using less light now?

hey guy's,been struggeling to get my ph & kh reading to preferd reading of 8.4 and 8 dkh,been testing for a week now and keep geting a reading of 8.2 and 7 dkh...!!been useing tropic marine tripple buffer with my top up water but cant get it up.....:banghead: !!!!!!!
Is that reading still in spec or iam i using the tripple buffer wrong??????:stupid:

I've got Klipfish!

Ive been keeping a few of our local endemic klipfish species in my tank during the winter.

Okay, once everyone has stopped laughing they are actually pretty cool and have kept me going through the cold months.

Im one of those guys that wants to know everything about everything in the ocean. Then a while back it dawned on me that in over 30years, Ive never given the Clinids much of a thought.

So, this winter is dedicated to them!

The Super klipfish is a bit evil and has eaten a few small fish, as well as my scarlet sea spider.

The Bluntnose has a great personality!

The Lace klipfish applied some suncream to its lips, but forgot to put on its sunglasses either that, or he has smoked some weird stuff:whistling:

The Barbled klipfish is a sneaky bugger with those freaky eyes.

i had a guy down knysna way wanting me to come assit with a project once, but i dident have a clue as to how to tackle it.. he wanted a 7m high tank... money was no object with him BTW;)

this just makes it easier to accept next time :)

cleaner shrimp

has anybody successfully breed cleaner shrimp and is it even possible?
the reason i ask is because one of my cleaners is carrying eggs and i thought it might be a cool experiment to try and breed them at a later stage.

anybody have any info or links on what would be needed and how to do it?

I need some help.

I have a 1.5m tank that is about 6 years old. Recently I have noticed there are some small bubbles starting to form in the silicone joints of some of the panels and the one side panel is not flush against the other panel but is pushing out about 1mm at the top of the tank .I have also noticed some algae growth underneath some of the silicone joints.

I do not want 500l of water in my living room. Would it be wise to just remove the silicone in the corners and reseal or would it be better to take the tank apart and re-silicone.
