Ok LFS gave me some Cheato for my refugeum and told me to keep the light on it. Now I've got brown diatoms on the substrait in the refugeum. What do I do now? I think we've been leaving the lights on too much, and should have started slowly, after getting the LED's. I took out the shells in the DT. They were covered in the brown fuzz, and cleaned the glass. It was fine yesterday. :p The clown was not happy with me taking his conch shell. He attacked me. I've been fighting phos at 0.5 and have high Alk @ 12. (I can't get either to go down.) PH 8.3 Nitrate 0 Nitrite 0 Ammonia 0. What should I do to get them out? Will the skimmer pull them out, if I keep wiping them off of stuff? How can I get them off the bottom of the refugeum? Are you supposed to keep the refugeum clean, or let it do it's thing?

I did the set-up of my new 750 litre marine tank on the 26th of June. I bought everything from Ian Booysen at Jungle Pet Zone at Broadacres. My Nitrates, Ammonia and Phosphate levels are 0 and Ian suggested that I start adding some cleaner crew and fish to get the whole cycle started. I added 5 turbo snails, a small hermit crab and an urchin yesterday and they seem to be doing fine. I am also introducing 6 Chromis tomorrow.
My son have been running a smallish tank (about 300litre) for a couple of years and we are moving his Scopa Tang, Regal Tang and Maroon Clown as soon as the new tank is ready.
Do you think I need to add more cleaner crew at the moment? My tank is so overgrown with hair algae and I hate the sight of it. I am struggling to find Hermit Crabs in Joburg at the moment.
Was wondering if anyone has kept any locally caught Zoa's?
The local Zoanthus durbanensis is quite colourful... Z. sansibaricus also looks quite nice. The rest are quite boring and are more suited to being exposed on low tides...
I will be married in December and moving into a new place in January. I have an esstablished 400-500 liter system at my parents place, but there is also a 1000+ liter system standing waiting for me to set it up...
This setup will be for the new home... Luckily the wife to be is also amazed by the marines and supports me in the hobby!!! so this helps alot.
I would firstly like to start of with a question bout the cycle and then the transportation....
What do I need for the cycle? (Cant remember...)
Can I transport the fish and LR all at once or do I need to do it in sections?
Starting up my TL550 tommorrow:1: just wondering about a few things.
Does anyone use the uv I see alot of peolple take them out? If its a good idea to use it should I run it during the cycling period or wait until its over?
I have already taken out the bio balls, and ceramic rings, and im going to use LR rubble, cheato, and filter floss for filtration am I missing anything. After the cycle how often would you recommend water changes and how much, on my current system im doing 20% weekly changes but thats on a much smaller system without a skimmer. Also I have the newer version of the TL550 with the bigger skimmer but I see it doesn't have a removeable cup any ideas on how to empty this without taking the whole skimmer out?
Sorry bout all the questions just don't wanna mess anything up.:)
