Hi Guys
I'm feeling tempted to buy a blue spotted sting ray from perkys pets superstore for my new FOWLR system.
1) Any advice on care level (i.e. Difficult to keep or moderate) ?
2) Do these guys carry or get white spot since I wont be able to QT it because my QT's have all had copper in one time or another.
3) My substrate is Aquamedic aregonite mixed with play sand - Is this a problem since ive read that they require only sand due to there sensitive underbelly ?

My reef tank running since March 2011!
-
It's sad when you write articles, and answer questions, etc. etc., and yet, don't have a reef aquarium of your own. I had to give all mine up a couple years ago. It was heart breaking for me. :(
Now, finally, I get to start all over again. My husband got me a brand new 75g tank. It's awesome.
I'm so friggin' excited and it doesn't even have water in it yet! I'm determined not to make all the same old stupid mistakes I made last time. This time, I'm going to make all NEW and intelligent mistakes.
Stay tuned, pics to come
-
i managed a nice shot of a fire shrimp the other day and thought id share
and hers is a rainfords goby (great fish especially for smaller tanks) i managed to get in focus
-
I have wanted a pair or small group of retailed butterfly for a while and have had my eye on one at an lfs for a couple of weeks, and i needed some retail theraps yesterday so i brought the fella. Its a truley beautiful adition to the tank although he is hammering my sponges and life on the LR fast. He tastes flakes but isnt eating hard, but feeds well with frozens (i figured thuis from seeing his tummy and knowing he had been in stores a while) I do suspect his nipping my palyzoanthids though which is worrying, although i have multiple tanks so i can move the corals if need be.
but heres my newest fish, ill get a propper photo soonish as these arent great :)
-
I spotted this fella in an LFS and have stayed away from him, but he looks very interesting and i am half complimlating setting up an invert dominated tank and he might make an interesting piece, but i need an id first.
the pics are poor, my applogies, but he is very rounded and has a tendancy to want to burrow by the look of him. the pinchers are held low and under the crab, but seem a little too sharp for my liking so i think he might catch fish (wrasses in particular)
but any ideas??
-
after running my tank for ages and wanting a nennie again I finally took the plunge yesterday. I was a little torn about my choice as i was realy wantinga RBTA but this fella looked nice with his bi colour tentacles and his foot was well ancoured. It looks a little light on colour to me and might need some tender care, especially as it showed no feeding responce to a small piece of lance fish today. But its new days and i will just watch it carefully.
here a few pics on my new nennie:) so chuffed to have a bta again
clowns are naturally staying deep in their pin chsion at the moment, scared of the new home, but thats fine with me, id rather have the nennie settle and thrive without the irratations of pesky clowns at the mo

Hi all
I'm new to this forum and as yet don't have an aquarium. Have been looking to keep hermit crabs though. Does anyone have any tips, suggestions, moans, groans or names of places where they can be bought?
I currently have a selection of dogs - 4, cats - 5, beardies - 3, frillies - 2, a mouse, a snake and a parrot. Oh yes, and a pond full of fish in the garden. So as you can see I'm a bit of an animal fan!!

Hi guys, can this be done? If so, how?
-
He's currently on the sand bed happy as can be and growing larger everyday. He's mounted on some random pieces of shell and dead coral, thats how I got him.
As far as I can tell, his foot is getting pretty big, should I place a rock under him for more "mounting" surface area? Or let him be?

Hi Guys, this is my tank. It has been running for about 4 months now, and during the first two months was on Nutrafin Cycle. I know you will see that i have a ritteri anemone and will think "Gasp, such a fragile and hard anemone to keep for a beginner with a tank so new." the answer is i am not really a beginner and the anemone has been doing great for the month it has been in my tank.
33 gallon tank consisting of:
1x Ritteri Anemone
2x True Percula Clowns
2x Yellow Tail Damsels
1x Frogspawn coral with 3 Heads
various polyp frags such as green star polyps, button polyps etc
Lighting: quad system HO lighting ODYSSEA, consist of 2x actinic 96W bulbs, 2x 96W 12000k daylight bulbs and 3 Blue Moon LED moonlights
Tank has a JEBO protein skimmer, UV sterilizer, a sump in which the protein skimmer and filter is present. Tank has a current maker as well, with directed flow towards ritteri and the zoa colonies.
Here's the pics:

hi guys ... my local LFS got live stock last nite ....

wats your advise on this thanks guys ....u rock here ;)
-
hi guys anyone got turbo snails in stock in cape town pls pm me some prices pls:)
-
Help me if i've got this wrong.
ok... so cryptic zones harbour filterfeeders.
Filterfeeders feed on food and poop particulates in the water.
Will they only assist with phosphates by consuming particles before they decay?
-
Is there anyone with any Chaeto/Calerpo in Northriding area - I've tried at all the pet shops, but they don't have.
-
please can anyone help with my toadstool, which i have noticed has this brown part on the stem. i have also noticed that it has pulled away from the rock on the one side. the other toadstool is fine. it is in a high flow area 2/3 of the way to the top of the tank.
-
Thought I would start this thread just to get some general opinions
How do we get the best colour out of our corals, what additives are we using , what colours "pop" / develop better etc etc.
-
Whitespot, oh whitespot, many a reefers downfall.
This is my solution, do not say its the best. It does have its issues. But this is the only solution I found for WS.
First, know your enemy
Secondly, on the fish, nothing helps.
As a cyst, only hypo helps a bit, but some cyst still develops. Cysts cement themselves to the substrate or shells.
As free swimming pests, very short time period to be effective with any medicines. Same for time period it falls off to the substrate.
Thirdly, keeping the fish in a QT tank for a month, do not guarantee you that they have no whitespot. I lost fish on day 28 with enormous outbreak of WS.
OK my solution.
I use the "BUCKET" method. But my version of it. Basically you move the fish to another container every other day. For more days than WS can be on the fish.
But by moving fish every day to another container does have its own problems
Stress, water parameter changes, stress, temperature changes, stress, salinity differences, stress.
This is where my variation comes into play.
I move the fish every second day. Well, big deal you say. But that still does not solve the water parameter and salinity differences. something I learned the hard way with a coral beauty RIP
I use about 50L water in big enough plastic tubes. Plastic is better, do not break that easy, keep on reading.
And, before I continue, this method is a schlep. A mayor Schlep. Lot of work.
OK, moving fish from one container to another.
Firstly, I siphon 50% of the water via a 1micron cannister filter to the next container. looking at the chart above, and you will see the smallest stage for WSis 25 to 60 micron. So they stay behind in the filter. Just ensure you let the water flow into the right direction.
The siphon action. Do not siphon the bottom. The pipe inside should be half way down. Just leave it until it sucks air.
You MUST have double set of heater, small 300L/h pump and airstone with short airline tubing. Here I hang it up on the washing line to spend the next two days in the sun. The set in the background is the set I just took out. Heaters must be the same and set to the same setting. And dry the QT net in the sun as well.
here is the fish currently in this programme. Navarchus angel, Sailfin tang, Cleaner wrasse and Scopa tang. Interesting, the tangs do not fight. Was very worried about that.
I drain 25L out of my main display. Do a small water change basically every second day. I use a drum with tap fitted. Put the drum on top of the container on small wooden supports and open the tap ONLY A BIT. The water must drain for longer than an hour. The longer the better. Get a beer and relax. Doing it slowly will sort any salinity and parameter issues.
When eventually done, I cover the one half of the tub with a towel, and the other side with a transparent lid.
Notes. 30 minutes before the water change, you must feed them. The next day feed them just enough. This system does not have any filtration capabilities. Solely reliant on 50% water changes every second day.
First batch water is obviously 50L from my display.
Throw the last 50% water left behind in old tub away, rinse in tap water. Boil the kettle and throw that in old tub. Plus put the net in the hot water for the fun of it. Empty it again, and leave the tub in the sun for the next two days.
From here the fish go into my real quarantine tank for 30 days. Only thereafter do the upgrade to the display tank.
The Navarhus is a new fish. I did not do this process with it. As stated, this is a schlep and I was not in the mood to do it properly. It stayed in the quarantine / peppermint shrimp tank for 3 weeks and then moved to the 220L. I moved the Sailfin and Scopa from my main tank to my 220L. Within week and a half, they all had WS. From where, most likely the Navarchus. Other tank is disease free for more than 18 months.
Now, what is the reasoning behind this method?
If you cannot do anything to WS while on the fish. and you struggle to siphon the bottom clean due to them cementing or glueing to the substrate or tank bottom. Why not take the tank away from the fish.
If you cannot treat the fish in the current environment, why not take the environment away from the fish.

Over the weekend I had a problem with my tank. I was nothing major but dropped Lawrance (Aquaria-SA) a mail with my issue. He responded really quickly and offered to meet up with me when he was up in JHB. And he did just that. He even met up after hours after he had traveled all over JHB and helped me with a smile.
Dude, thank you, it was really a breath of fresh air with having customer service of this level and even full knowing that I have the smallest tank in your range. I need to buy you a case when you are back in JHB.

options, options, oh sorry, there are none.
Been to 2 of the LFS supporters on MASA, and the smallest skimmers is external Red Sea units at about R1400.
What else can I look at, or actually where else can I find something that will fit.
I want it internal. Tank is a Nano Cube 24G. Chamber in the back is about 80mm wide. But the gap with lid in place is just over 70mm.
I can get a Aqua-Marco unit, but it is 80mm wide, so to get it in I need Vaseline.
Seems that on Boyu tanks some members have WG05 skimmers. Are they available?
Any suggestions please.
-
Ok so received my new toy Skimz FM100 reactor (thanx Les). Filled it with some GAC & Purigen.
Unfortunately the Purigen particle size is so fine it passes through the spunge , ending in the sump.
- Option 1 - put it in a stocking inside the reactor. How would this affect performance of the media ?
- Option 2 - add a more compact spunge. How would this affect the pump / reactor etc.
Thanx

hello everyone

I need some help please
I am having big problem with algae growth in my tank. The algae even growing on the inside of the canopy and inside the pipes of the canister filter. I have asked some advice at my local petshop. The guy there said one solution could be to fit a uv light inside the canopy .Will this work to eliminate the algae problem?
-
Ok, someone in my tank needs a real Whoopin'! Either my newest clam keeps pushing himself over on his side, or someone else is doing it; and a couple smaller mushrooms are loose on the sand/off their rocks. :cursing::cursing:
I'm suspecting the red corris wrasse (he is the devil), the large hermit crab... because he cruises around the tank like a bull in a china shop, and/or the emerald green crab... because he climbs on everything and there's not much algae in there for him to eat. (I feed him algae treats though.)
Cast your votes on who the guilty party(s) is...

My FF has always been the tank pig, eating everything from nori to brine.
But for the last week he'll swim up to the surface as normal when they see me to feed. When I feed flakes he pigs out, but when I feed frozen brine he swims and hides and doesn't show for a good 10min.
He used to love the stuff and now its like he's afraid of it... I know they're herbivores but still???
Any ideas? :)

My first mandarin was acquired when my tank was about 3months old, bad advice from a certain lfs and sadly it lasted just over a month. I now have a male for close to a year, spends it's days hunting pods but also eats flakes, pellets, brine & mysis. I have been thinking of getting a female but wondering if it would be a problem or not? are they difficult to pair?
-
my tank is about 4 weeks old now and my supplier kept 2 fish and 5 hermid crabs for me. Now he is moving and i put the fish and crabs in my tank, i also got 2 mollys in the tank. Will the load be to much on the system? What is the best food for hermid crabs?

I've been getting so jealous..:P..of the pictures some of the guy's have been taking with their camera's that I decided to dig up our old Nikon D50.....when I say old, I actually mean Brand New Out Of The Box,maybe used 4 times in the past +-5 years....I love the Macro shot's and wanted to find out if my camera can do it..being such an old Model...I went looking at the lenses we have and one of them is a TAMRON AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 LD MACRO 1:2 (MODEL 572D772D)
Would those Macro shot's be any good...? Or would I require a way better Lens for really good close-up's..?

I'm confused, I always thought Electronic ballasts where the way to go when using Metal Halides, but I've come across a few comments that have me doubting that and thinking I should just stick to the Magnetic ballasts I have instead of spending a fortune on electronic ones.
This comment is what started it, from the
AquaMedic website:
Quote:
|
Of course magnetic ballasts deliver a bit more punch than their electronic cousins
|
Then I came across these comments on other websites:
Quote:
|
The electronic ballasts do underdrive the bulbs slightly making them put off a little bit less light.
|
Quote:
|
The magnetic ballasts drive the bulbs harder which can change the spectrum.
|
Quote:
|
But the downside is you cant use certain bulbs, like Giesemann, Ushio, and a couple others.
|
Quote:
|
some bulbs are made for magnetic and some for electronic ballasts. There can be big differences between the two.
|
Quote:
|
I had some 250 ushio 14k bulbs that I used both magnetic and electronic ballasts. The electronic was much yellower and the magnetic was a nice white color.
|
So my questions, has anybody experienced certain makes of bulbs not working on magnetic ballasts? How do we know the bulbs won't work, is it stated on the packaging?
Is it really worthwhile forking out a thousand or two for electronic ballasts? Doesn't seem to be worth it to me.
Anybody got any links to scientific studies on the differences between magnetic and electronic ballasts?

Hi Masa
I redone the aqua-scaping of my tank to create less dead spots from the previous setup I had, I made a video of my setup, also had high phos and nitrates which has come down nicely, both my carpet and RBTA has died, :(carpet, because of water quality and my rose because of a large type of worm that was in its rock feeding off of him. if u guys can view the video and any input/suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi please help, tank 4 months old. Checked parametrs Saturday, everything fine. Have wrasse for two months. Suddenly started "sleeping" this afternoon as well. He usually goes to "sleep" at about 6pm and awakes at about 8am. He does this by burrowing under the gravel. He awoke later this afternoon, but is now lying on his side, breathing heavily. Has not eaten today. All other fish 100%
Any suggestions PLEASE.

Helloooo fishy people!
My name is Waldo, and I live in Cape Town's Southern Suburbs. I just started writing this, when I wondered upon the website of PhutureLab - who is based very near me!
So I phoned them up and have made an appointment to see Zayne tomorrow. Hopefully this starts me off in the right direction...
Anyway, as I was about to say before getting sidetracks: I'm completely new to this hobby, and don't even own a tank yet. I've done a LOT of reading, including the links on this forum, and am just about ready to start. I'm not in a mad hurry, but I would like to at least start...
Initially I was thinking of going down the route of a Boyu all-in-one system, but some of the posts here have put me off that! So now I'm considering Zayne's M120 system, which is 120x45x45, and comes with a sump, wave maker, reasonable lights, etc. It is also fully upgradeable, and even though I'm probably going to opt for a skimmer from the word go, I hope that the system is flexible enough to allow for upgrades as I go along.
Am I crazy for wanting to get on this horse?!?

I am getting married on 21 October and we are going on honeymoon for two weeks. If anybody close-by would look after my tank it would be great. I will drop it off at your house and pick it up again after. I will not blame you for any losses but it would be nice if everything will survive. Check my tank thread for details on the setup. Very low maintenance. 10% weekly waterchange (I will provide NSW) and some feeding is all it takes. Lights are on a timer and no evaporation or additives needed. I change the filter floss weekly during the waterchange. Really simple and low maitenance tank. Anybody?

Hi everyone,
I'm needing some advice on how to go about converting my existing FW Juwel RIO 400 to a SW tank... I've sketched up my tank and also sketched up a proposed solution that I've been thinking about but I've got absolutely zero experience when it comes to sumps so I'm reaching out :)
Also, with the overflow in the DT - was thinking about going a skinny coast to coast. Any suggestions maybe?
See below sketches :
My existing tank and dimensions
This is what I've been thinking about doing - give me some thoughts please. You'll see that because I'm taking out one of the supports, I'm going to be needing to reinforce the cupboards with metal bars. Might be a bit of overkill but I'd rather have too much than too little.
Just one question though to all the guys out there with a limited sump space... would you like it if your sump could roll forward as in out of the cupboard completely? Would it benefit you in any way? Just thinking about options here before I start cutting up my cupboard space. Would it be better to just remove all the existing cupboards completely?
Obviously with regards to the sketch below, the skimmer would be in the left section. Haven't thought about the return side yet.
Please let me know what you guys think.

Hi everyone,
I found this snail a few months ago in my tank, then it was tiny... now its a MONSTER:lol:
Can someone please help me to ID this snail and let me know if its fine to keep or should I get rid of it?
I noticed that this snail has got tentacles that come out from the sides and back +- 5/6.
Thanks

Hi guys.I just want to know if there is someone in Port Elizabeth thats got some chaeto for me.I need it to see if my lipstick will eat it.If you read my other threads you will understand why I say its urgent
-
another project
I received a nano tank from NJ.
Well a old tank. Can not look a gift horse in the mouth.
Anyway stand. Most likely need a new top, or throw away.
But the problem is that the back glass is cracked. Was drilled for sump outlet, but it cracked most likely because it was over tighten or bumped against the bulkhead.
Here, she is naked - stripped.

Hi all
I know this is a shot in the dark (no pun intended) but MH light was working PERFECTLY - needed to be replaced and replaced a Oddesy 10000k light with a Dyanamax 14k light both 150W, So I turned off the unit waited for it to cool down and then went into replacing the bulb. Was super careful used a tissue etc etc and then turned the light on. Hmmmm no MH came on... my T5's came on but nothing else.
So I thought new bulb can take its time to ignight so I left it for an hour NOTHING.
So I played around turned the bulb around etc ever played with the bulb moving it whilst it was on to see if it would ignight - NOTHING....
Ok so put the old bulb back in. Sh1t also now the old light doesn't come on either. Also left it for 1 hour "on" nothing. I then turned it OFF for 2 hours to see if it needed to "reset" - Still nothing....
I have no idea what is going on. I am sure there is power as the MH are linked to fans and the fans come on..... just the MH doesn't.
Anyone know what I can look for?

Hi,
So I have moved my tank due to selling my place and moving, so I am starting again to a certain point.
My current setup is in a plastic pool in the garage.
I was advised to get rid of my cheap skimmers and get a decent Reef Octopus and then get rid of my two DSB's and my algae scrubber and replace it with a reactor.
Am also planning on replacing my return pumps with a decent 15000l pump, just one instead of the 3 smaller ones I currently have.
What are your thoughts?
For now this will be a fish only tank.
Thanks.

I bought a beautiful pale yellow/white fox coral (Nemenzophyllia turbida) a month ago.
Most sources say that it should be kept at low to moderate lights or even indirect light and that it turns brown under strong, direct light.
Not wanting it to turn brown and hoping to keep the pale yellow colour, I placed it in a are of moderate, directional changing flow with about 2/3 of it being shaded by the LR and 1/3 getting direct light.
It is doing vey well, expanding nicely during the day and has kept its colour. When I look at it however it is clear that the bit in the "sun" is expanding more and open up, while the bit in the shade still expands, but keeps its "lobes" closed.
Will it be OK like this, or will the shaded bit "go hungry"?
PS. Photos not the best, extremely difficult to get the white balance right with its colour.

Hi Guys
I have 4 Tunze 6205 streams on a controller. What is the best placement and program to run them on?
My tank is 1.8m X 1m x 0.8m. The reef runs right accross the middle of the tank with most of the SPS on the right hand side. Some LPS and softies.
Thanks
Zayd

Hi Reefers
If you do not come to Pet Stop you are missing out on one of the biggest Marine shops in South Africa and arguably they best advise, variety of stock and the benchmark Pet shop in SA!
I get lots of quarries regarding our old and new email lists. See below.
But the bottom line is if you do not get AT LEAST 1 (one) email from us a week for the past month +++ you are not on our email notification list :(
Why be on the list? - Reefers and other hobbyists on this list get Specials, promotions, new items and other items of interest that are not advertised on all mediums.
How to make sure you are on
Pet Stop's email notification list:
- Send a request to subscribe@petstopsa.com
- We will add you and send you a confirmation email.
- If you add that address (ric@petstopsa.com) to your address book and (f given the option)mark sender as always safe for future emails.
Now you are on the list and your spam filter should not delete the emails:yeahdude::thumbup:
Sit back and receive at least 1 email a week of Pet Stop's Specials, promotions and new stock.
Regarding the old list - We lost all our data in the devastating fire that destroyed Pet Stop on 15 January 2011. some data was recovered / salvaged but lots of the data on our drives was lost.
Lots of the reefers that used to receive emails from us before the fire do not receive it any more, leading to confusion where they think they are still on the list:blush:
We are sending weekly updates, specials and news items emails out, if you do not receive a email every week for the last month + . You are not on the list and missing out!!!!!:1:
So email to
subscribe@petstopsa.com NOW and know of all the specials, news, new stock and other items of interest happening at Pet Stop.

This shrimp has been with me since the start of my marine aquarium journey. I gave it to my friend to keep for a couple of months so that I could set up my new tank. When I got it back last night I dripped for about 1 half hours and he was exploring the tank and eating off the floor already!! He looked fine, no stress. But today I couldn't find him. I've got 2 clowns a foxface and a rock blenny. A couple of small hermits and thats it. I found small pieces of his feelers. Any suggestions how he passed because I really love these guys and I want to get more.:(

Couldnt post under for sale.
I have a bird mouth wrasse available for free to whom ever. Fish was purchased by my father about a year ago when we moved and left the tank with him. He just bought whatever he thought was cool i think. Anyway he is majorly aggressive towards the Fox face so we decided to take tank down and start fresh as he seriously neglected it. Corals died, water changes were slow etc.
Give me a shout if youre interested.

Hi
How long do your lights have to be off for?
Light enters my house from sunrise. So all the fish are already swimming around from then. I only on my light at 10am and leave it on until 8.30pm tho I want to leave it on for longer. As soon as lights go off my chromis are gone. The question is how long do fish actually need in 'night mode'
Thanks

I bought this anemone a few weeks ago, when I got it it was smaller than this and completely deflated. The guy at the shop told me it was a rock anemone, so I went home and done some research and it looked like a flower or rock anemone. So I went back the next day and bought it. After a few day the tentacles started expanding and looking more and more like a BTA, but im still not sure.

Hı fellow reefers...
Whats the smallest shark we can keep ın a tank and where can ı get 1?... Also whats the easıest corals to look after?
-
What do you guys and galls think of this ongoing poaching.
-
I'm moving at the end of October and need the following:
1 x 4-foot Tank (It will be used as a temp setup and then be converted to a sump with dsb)
2 or 4 250l Plastic drums (To move the water, then I'll use them to mix salt water)
-
Anyone got a spare one of these ?
Original and working.
-
And it hurts like a mofo.
Did the whole vinegar thing and removed the spike, but damn.
Went right through a rubber glove. Best part of all, I was picking up the corals he threw off the reef.
So... who wants a urchin?
-
I am looking fr a TS2 or similar size skimmer, anyone got something lying around let me know.
Thanks

a Week ago my sicce pump impeller broke due to a power surge,i then bought a entire pump as the cost of a replacemnt impeller.
So i replaced the pump with same sicce pump and connected it to my reef octo 160,the water is pushed up the chamber and very little foam/bublles are being produced.
I let it run over night in hope it needs to settle and the foaming with become denser, but this did not happen.
Venturi is connected so the air draw is ther

It contains protein and various vitamins for nurturing and brightening fishes.
It can provide high quality water purification and effectively prevent the growth of pathogenic microorganisms.
It can come into effect in both aerobic and anaerobic environments and wont degrade the oxygen contents in the water.
It can naturally decompose the harmful substances (such as organic matter, ammonia, nitrite and sulfureted hydrogen, etc.) in the water of the aquarium and at the bottom of the sand bed.
It can also assist in the treatment of sick and decease ridden fish
It can be used in the setups of new aquariums thus adding the nitrifying bacteria that is needed to sustain a health aquarium.

HI All
I would like to find out more about Ozone? how it works and can I use an O3 fitting that was installed by another water company for drinking use?
Regard
-
Ok so I have thought long and hard. Gonna rip out the reef this weekend and reboot it.
Issues i have include:
1. Non stop issues with aiptasia
2. Same with nudis and sundial snails on the zoas (colonies to be dipped)
3. Blue clove polyps are taking over everywhere and i mean everywhere. Its worse than aiptasia
Now my idea is to put all the rock in the sun for 3 days or so then rinse it, soak it for a day in Saltwater then put it back in the tank. I may get some baserock in the meantime to give the fish some shelter.
I know all the bacteria are going to be wiped out. @
dallasg what would you recommend to assist with bacteria during the first few weeks when everything is new? I will keep the crushed coral substrate and DSB in the sump going so that should harbor some bacteria.
Thoughts/ideas on how to keep the stock in good shape during this process?

My Father just recently passed away! He was a keen enthusiast since before I was born!
I've been giving it a bit of thought and have been pondering the idea of getting my own fish tank started with a couple of his old favorite fish (Roman emperor 'I think thats what it is called' and clown fish). There were other fish but I just can't remember their names!
He has Corel lying in a bucking along with two empty fish tanks which I think were quite new. In the Corel bucket theres some type of tube attached to a plug and I'm not too sure what to do with it! Have no idea how too start and maintain his Corel.
There are also heaps of salt water in on of his spare cuboards.
Links or idea's on how to proceed would be nicely appreciated to hear/view!

Hi Fellow Reefers,
Decision has been taken consolidate current two tanks into one upgraded tank
No pictures yet, need builder to remove a wall, paint, plaster etc. (wife is thrilled). Also converting outside store-room into water mixing room which will be plumbed direct into the tank.
Tank Details
· 1500mm x 1,200mm x 600mm (water level at 550mm)
· +- 1,000L with sump
· Metal Frame, cabinet & matching open top trim
· Skinny overflow & Euro braced
Equipment List
· Deltec TC 2060 skimmer (rated for 1,700l)
· Deltec KM500 Kalk Stirrer
· Deltec FR512 Fluidised Reactor (NP Pellets)
· Jag Heaters 300w (x2)
· Hailea Hc 1,000 Chiller Unit
· 2x MP40 Vortech pumps (plus additional SunSun Pumps)
· Aquatronic Controller System
· Profilux Dosing Pump (with built in controller)
· Phosphate Reactor (TLF)
· Carbon Reactor (TLF)
Lighting Unit
· Custom made T5 Light fitting 12 x 80w bulbs
So that is about it for now just need builder to do his thing & then LFS to do his thing & we should have tank with water ASAP.
Will post photos as soon as something happens, but just so I dont get banned this is where the tank will stand & which wall needs to be knocked out

Cheers

Hi Every one!
I have just joined the community and would need some insight on how to constuct my sump Filter for my 2.4m marine tank.
I have a 4ft tank as a Sump filter which I need to fit a Skimmer, Filter media, Heaters and pumps to run this tank. I have not had a Marine tank in about 8 years and the previous tank had already been setup when I took it over.
What a is the bes way to make use of the 4ft tank and what filters are the best, Deep bed or normal or both and which should I put first?
The Displaytanks dimensions is 2400x650x600 thats around 900l, I am repairing the fron glass and have ordered a new on but they have polished the glass all round, is this a problem as I would need a smooth edge on the joining end?
There is support bracing allround on the inside.
Kind Regards
Francois:yeahdude:

See him?
Here he is
As you can see I have a fair amount of bubble algae in this particular tank, so I bought this little fellow in the hope that he will devour the stuff, after being in the tank for only 2 days I was happy to see him eating some of the bubble algae  He's my new bestest friend, although with the amount of 'food' he has available to him I think I may need to buy him some brothers and sisters to help out. :p

And wants to help me rescape my tank? :P

Hi guys. got my first fish in the tank. Its a beautiful lipstic tang of about 5cm in size.I tryed to upload a pic but cant get the dimentions right will try again later. :)
-
That time has come, been thinking about it for a while and have decided to sell everything.
Anyways, whats the best way to go about this? Was thinking about selling all the coral first(mainly SPS), from there remove some rock to make catching fish a little easier. I know its next to impossible to try sell all to one buyer so wont even go that route.
Any advice/suggestions welcome.
PS. Wont be able to stay away too long so a simple 600mm cube in a couple of years is definitely on the cards.
-
hi Sara,
I was using a macro lense the other day and trying to get some closeups of fishes eyes (as one does when bored and have had a beer or two on a saturday) and notice a number of very small holes or pits in the skin on the head of my sailfin tang. I dont notice them of my naso tang so they maybe specific to the sailfin or that genus of tang but do you perhaps know the function of them.
I hope they are visable in these pics if not I can load the large res versions (although that might upset viper a little as it hammers his server space and he seems quite protective of that).
just curious as to why they are there and what they do :)

Hi Reefers,
Finally got to the point of making a long time thought reality. I love this hobby very much, and although a haven't had my own piece of the ocean i enjoyed working with my dad (mandarin) on his tank while he still had it.
I have decided to go NANO size. I now believe that bigger isn't necessarily better and less can be better than better, after i saw some really awesome systems on nano-reef.com
So here is what i planned so far.
Display :
DIY 500mm x 500mm x 400mm (water level @ +- 360mm)
Just love shallow reefs.
Rimless with polished edges.
Lightning:
DIY 1x 150w MH 20K.
Depending on the color and light intensity, if not totally satisfied i will ad 2x 36W PL combo white/blue tubes or run 1x 250W MH.
Sump:
I am not going with the traditional DSB.
The footprint of the sump is way to small for a DSB anyway and even if it was big enough i still want to go another route.
I will be doing a combination of different BIO-MEDIA as my main filtration.
Mechanical : Filter sock, filter mat and small internal skimmer.
Biological filtration: Seachem Matrix, Sera Siporax.
Chemical filtration: Seachem Purigen, Chemi Pure Elite and Prodibio.
Now most reefers will say, but BIO-MEDIA are a detritus trap. My answer to this, the detritus will settle somewhere anyway. You just have to prevent it from settling where you don't want it to. That's why i'm going to run a filter sock and also filter mat before water enters over my BIO-MEDIA.
Circulation:
On my wish list a Eco Tech Vortec MP10.
Temperature control:
Eheim Jager 200W heater.
Hailea HB-500A chiller if needed.
Let the build begin! :yeahdude:

Hi all,
I did a water change (20%) all is happy last night doing my routien nighly checks with my "red light torch" and all of a sudden I noticed thousands of tiny little things (can't even make out what they are) following the light. As I moved the light around these "Little things" were there in a second.
Not sure what they are but they def alive and swimming.
Brine Shrimp? I didn't add any to the tank....
I couldn't get a pic, don't have a proper cam and don't think it would take a proper pic either with the red light ....
-
Hi.
So I have a Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma Veliferum) and a Brown Tang (Zebrasoma Scopas) in my DT at the moment.
I would like to add more tangs, so I bought a Yellow (Zebrasoma Flavescens) a few weeks back.
The Yellow cannot be put in the DT, I have tried all the tricks everyone mentioned, Lights out - Mirror in the tank - Changed the scaping - I have tried it all..
Next step is to catch the Sailfin and the Brown tang after lights out when the fish are in "Sleep" mode .. sailfin is easy, Brown Tang is clearly some sort of a genuis, as the fish hides when anything moves , even in complete darkness..
Catching them can be done, with some effort I guess, my question now is - If i add the yellow when the Sailfin and Brown tang is out, will they not fight again.. If you leave them out for a week, won't they simply fight again once re-introduced?..
Also, Next tang I want is a Purple - will I have this same war then again? Then its 3 fish I have to catch (If that is going to work) ..
Any suggestions ?
-
Does anyone know where i can find red gracilaria. Its for a refugium. I dont like using cheato because the pods tear it apart and make a huge mess...
-
Any one out there that have a few extra frags for a decent price, Im in Pretoria. Thanks
-
I have never seen this before. A recovering rose bubble tip anemone walked ,or was enticed into a rock anemone. the rock anemone was fully bloated when i intervened and gently removed the RTBA.
Pics are not good but the incident was at the back of the tank.
-
Put my hand in to the tank and got a hectic voltage shock, not the type that can kill but the type that hurts... My fish dont seem to be jumping around or moving any extra when ever i switch on the skimmer so will this affect my tank or not?
Also what could be wrong with the pump and can it be fixed?
I hope so!
Thanks

Ow that I have my RO unit going at full tilt I have a question. I made 150l today out of that two drums 25l are going to be salt water. I have calculated that I need 850g for 25l to make salt at 1025. I will confirm with
Questions:
1. Do I pour salt in now and leave plan on using salt water in a weeks time
2. Do I need to put a heater in to dissolve the salt
3. Do I need a flow pump in there too.
How do you guys make salt water?
-
After taking a brake from reefing for about 2 years, i am hoping to set up a new 110L mixed marine tank. Luckily I have not got rid of all the essential and most costly things, like my live (dead now) rock, protein skimmer and Tunze pumps.
I want to go with a classic sump design not to complex, DSB/refugeem in one 60L tank. The only thing that I am realy undicided about is whether i should use NSW or synthetic salt to do water changes with. I have alwas felt safe with synthetic sea water, but it will work out to be far to expensive if I have to consider all other start up costs. Although I am not sure where to get decent NSW in CT, any advice would be apreciated as i dont want to get by the Two Oceans Aquariums as they pump there water to close to the shore for my taste:whistling:. For lighting I think that will go with MH T5 mix, but start with T5 as it is cheaper to buy the bulbs and ballasts one by one then buying a whole MH system. Will post pictures as soon as I have a tank to speach of:biggrin:.

Hi All.
I finaly got round to taking some pics of my TL550:biggrin: its been stocked for about a month now, mostly with the stuff I moved over from my old 30L tank just lots of extra live rock, a total of about 15kgs. Everythings standard except for the lighting and powerheads. For the lighting I left one of the flourecents in and added a 54w diy led fixture, And also a sump light for the cheato. There is a clown and a coral beauty hiding in there somewhere they didn't want to stay still enough fo a picture Thanks to all who gave me advice, and frags.:1:I am really enjoying this tank.

Time for me to start my tank thread. Its already about 2 years old, but took it very slowly. I will start with a picture of my "engine room". Runnig my system from an industrial PLC, with a proper distribution board and relays driven from the PLC.
Next an interesting pic I took this afternoon. Was hunting for Aptisia , with all pumps switched off. Took this pic looking up into the DT from the floor.

I have either an entire system or multiple items. Please excuse not having photos today as I cannot do it from my iPad, the option is not active however I will post on Monday from laptop.
I will give preference to the person that takes the tank or other hardware for the livestock. The reason for the sale is I am upgrading to a full SPS and want to start fresh. I have not included pricing because I am open to negotiation. Very open but not cash strapped that I will entertain ludicrous offers.

hi
what do you do after a fire shrimp moults?
its old skin gets placed in places i cant reach and it ends up breaking up/leaving the rock it was attached to, some how or the other, eventually reaching the powerheads and then it gets shredded.
is this fine?
how often do they moult?
p.s the 1st time this happened i thought one of the old ones had given birth :whistling::)

hi my name is casper and i am trying to set up the filter system in my kids aquarium
its a boyu 26l system the half moon version
does anybody know how the plumbing for the filter system works
i have it in bits and am trying to figure out what goes were
cheers :)

I am sure I am not the only one to feel this way, but at night when the tank light are off and only the moon lights are on the tank takes on a completely different character. During the day the fish and corals dominate, but at night its just the two clowns swimming aimlessly, the rest are all the night creatures. Every night it looks different, with different worms, slugs, snails copepods and other small creatures cruising around. it is absolutely incredible. To think that within your tank there are just so many lifeforms. So after
a tough day its awesome to view this spectacle as it unfolds.
Just some thoughts.....

Will my tank ever balance out, so that I don't have to run carbon or phos reducer? (Put them passive in pantyhose in the hob refugeum.)
My cheato keeps floating to the top of the fuge. I started squeezing out the air bubbles getting in it, from the skimmer outflow, so it sinks back down. I keep getting brownish/redish slime on top of it. Is it cyno? Should I move the phos reducer before the cheato/fuge area? I've got the carbon there, and the phos reducer after. No algae or slime in the DT (yet).

So i have just managed to empty my live rock out of my tank aling with all the water. Whew what a mission!
I have rinced off all the salt and am in the process of waiting to get help moving the tank outside for a good scrub down.
U will NEVER guess what i found.
I nearly threw it out!
I swear it has to be a starfish!!!
Its about the size of a 10c coin. It has 5 very thin legs. I thought it was a worm initially one of those icky ones that send out its tentacles out of the rock to search for food, but it moves like a starfish.
Its body is about the size of drop of water. I cant photograph it as u cant really see it in the pic.
I think it may be a serpent star.
Ive attached a link to another site. Can anyone confirm for me without a pic?
I swear i didnt pinch it..... it came with the live rock :yeahdude:

Hi Hennie
firstly id like to say hi to all.i cant believe that ive overlooked a hobby such as this.i had a tropical setup when i was a teen, but this is a whole new game.
So ive purchased a tank +-205l it has two power heads a heater and a sump with a protein skimmer some filtering and a return pump.
My question is now that its setup, how long would the salt take to disolve before testing salinity,im using red sea coral pro s.
oh ya,i also have quite a bit of liverock that is already in the tank.any help would be appreciated thx
-
Its been a while since i have posted any pics on my DT. Well tanks been running for about 12 weeks now. all looking good, have been through a few tough times, but thanks to MASA team, have made it through.
This is my FTS. not clean in the front as this is the favorite place for my sand sifting star to hang out. this shot includes all my life stock, even my paranoid Foxface hiding in the background. i love it, its still a work in progress, but great so far. Comments advise welcome

I stopped dosing vodka cos my corals were bleaching and its not necessary with softies. Added Rowaphos but even before i stopped the vodka this started.
Its so bad that my substrate clumps up so much i can actually peel it off see attached pics.
Whats going on?
oh yes its only where there is light wherever there is shade and no light its fine substrate is nice and clean and white
Nitrate and Phos is zero.
I intend adding a refugium in the coming weeks and have been doing regular 10% waterchanges. cut down feedings as well

Hi All
Im a newbie to the marine tank. I just purchased a tank from a friend. Its a 95l reef tank. The tank is running two powerheads, 4 t5 lights. Two pumps which of 1 runs into skimmer and other back into tank.Have a heater and an electric termometer. I have about 10kgs live rock, crushed coral as a base. Thank has a clown, pajama cardinal and a yellow tang. I have some Mushrooms and some zoas. Tank has been running the crrent setup over 2 years.
Any advise on how to make sure the tank is running smoothly?

Detailed help requestAre you experiencing any problems in your tank? Yes
Brief Description Hi guys. Been having an issue in my tank the last 3 days or so. 70% of all my coral are either closed or barely open. Nothing in my regime changed and I have no idea why the tank is reacting the way it is. I took out a dead starfish 2 days ago so that may have led to a bit of ammonia but surely the tank size should have taken care of any issues with that. I have about 100KG liverock in the DT and a DSB in the sump. I am really getting worried as none of the coral seem to be bouncing back. SPS's look like sticks, no polyps extension, the odd zoa colony is open. As most of you know the tank is stocked with 60+ zoa colonies and various other corals. Been running at this capacity for much of the tank's life. I added a reactor with more activated carbon this morning, just to make sure i pull out any crap that may or may not have entered the water. The tank has a hood with slight gaps on the side.
Any ideas on what else to do ?

Anyone else get tennis elbow from doing water changes and top offs?
Apparently, 3 gallon jugs are too big for me to lift up over my shoulder on a daily basis...
-
You now its bad when this has been sitting in my lounge near my tank for a little while, maid packed it away and then I put it back and then packed it away ....
Bad news is I added to the pile today a new Tunze return (Silent) with safety connector...
I still have to fit the RO unit, the Tunze stuff and my chiller all sitting idol ...

Hey guys,
So I finally found a nice 150L tank with sump on the one side.
The question begs ofc which way do I go, marine or freshwater planted.
I'm seriously leaning towards the marine side and could use some input on the matter.
First would be the filtration, I've already got a bag of ceramics with the tank, but should I be adding something extra ? Wool / purigen etc.
Then on the question of substrate, what would be a good option to go for ? I want something light in colour for the light to reflect back on. I can get crushed coral at a good price so this is currently my 1st option. It is purely just going to be there to fill bottom and give a little room for some bacteria / critters.
Live rock in the display should be beneficial for the general bonus it provides as well as the basic sculpting.
Now what I need to figure out is what my running costs will be on water changes / salt etc.
The tank will be a small reef, so I need to keep in mind what corals / fish to add as I grow.
Any and all input is greatly appreciated as always.

Hi guys and gals...
I have a new marine tank. Size-650x650x350. The only equipment for the sump i have is the return pump and ts1 skimmer... I wanted to put a reacto but people are telling me to rather do a dsb or a refug.. Which would be better from the 3? If the reactor is the answe then what reactor do i buy?
Any advice would be appreciated
Thank you

I just saw the images of frags from Perky Pets and Pest Stop SA. They are ginormous! I can't get anything near those sizes here. :( I'm buying frags with 3 zoa polyps on them, and frags 1/2 - 1" sizes...
Not fair, I say! Not fair!

Hi Reefers,
The purpose of this thread is to take action against Trevor from Two Oceans Aquatic Services and Supplies.
As we too were victims of him. Most of you know he was a fellow employee of ours and therefore knew personal information like our account passwords etc.
Therefore he took that opportunity to log into our Gmail account and sent his own banking details to our previous landlord who owed us our deposit money. Trevor gave them his own personal bank account which they then sent the sum or R12,000 TO HIS ACCOUNT THINKING IT WAS OUR ACCOUNT!!
To everyone that has paid money to him and not received goods we are asking you to please help us with putting this matter into action. We need the names of all the people that Trevor owes money to and the amount of money he owes (optional).
Can anyone supply us with Trevors mothers cell number we would like to pass this message onto her before we decide to take legal action but If there is still no response from Trevor we will be forced to take legal action against him.
We want to settle this matter once and for all!!
All we are asking from you is that you will supply us with your name and we will do the rest by taking it to the police to open a case against him.
Please contact us by PM.
Thank You.

Hi Guys
I've been away from home for 2 weeks on an unexpected business trip and when I got home this morning, noticed that one of my Blue face Cardinals (I have four of them), seemed to have a part of its tail fin missing. He was swimming with the others and according to the missus, his tail fin has been deteriorating over the last week. He was still feeding properly. On closer inspection, I saw that the back fin seems to be starting with the same deterioration.
I also noticed that there was a white "lump" where the tail fin meets the body, as well as behind the gills, at the bottom.
None of the other fish seem to be affected / infected.
Not sure if this is a disease? Does not look like whitespot, as these "lumps" are not spots. Is there anything I can give this fella?

Hi All
Our tank has been running for over 7 months now and felt it's long overdue it's own tank thread.
Just a quick background, my husband and I are serious ocean lovers and have always wanted a marine tank. After spending a few long cold years in Europe and the UK, we moved back to our sunny hometown and decided that having the sea as our backyard was not good enough and that we needed a piece of the ocean in our lounge. So we went out and bought a secondhand 1.2m set-up off gumtree. Fortunately we found the MASA community early into our new found hobby and haven't made too many newbie mistakes so far or so we think...
So here is our set-up specs:
DT - 1.2m wide x 0.4m deep x 0.5m high
Sump - 1.2m
Skimmer - Reeftek TS2
Return pump - Sicce 45W 2500l/hr
Powerheads - 3x JVC101 sunsuns
Lighting - 4x 54W T5s
Sump - The tank came with a trickle filter on the side, we took out the bioballs and ceramic rings and converted it into a mini refugium with chaeto (with the overflow runnning through some filterfloss first). Our first chamber in the sump contains the heaters and a 'sock' of carbon which we change every week, this is followed by the skimmer and then the DSB, a few mangroves and more chaeto which run on reverse lighting. We then have a DIY auto ro top-up in the last chamber with the return pump.
We do weekly 25l water changes with Seachem reef salt or NSW if the sea conditions are good. We manually dose the kalk, iodine, magnisium etc etc...
I feed the fishes twice a day and wish I could feed them more...I have to regularly restrain myself from putting in more and more food... I can't help myself as they get all excited when they see me pick up the bottle of fish food and start dancing up and down the glass...how can you resist :whistling:
Food wise, they get ocean nutrition pellets, cyclop-eeze and are treated with freshly hatched brine shrimp or chopped up seafood mix a few times a week when we target feed the corals and nennie.
So here is the LS list:
Fish:
6x locally caught anthias (husband can't help himself when he goes freediving)
3x blue green chromis
2x nemos
1x midas blenny
1x local cleaner wrasse
1x blue dot sleeper goby
3x local algae munching blennies and 1x hitchhiking blenny
1x yellow tang
1x local angler fish which lives in the sump and gets fed live fish from the rockpools
Inverts:
1x porcelain crab
1x clam
1x nennie (think it's a sand nennie and before anyone comments, it was given to us and we have now had it for 5 months and it definitely grown so must be happy)
1x local seahare
1x local boxer shrimp
lots of local hermies and snails
Corals:
Various local zoas
Mushrooms
Sinularia
Sarcophyton
Torch coral
Open brain (the lfs called it a rose coral)
Yellow black coral
So now for the long awaited photos...

We are in the process of building a new tank and as always thought we share it if MASA!
The client we are building the tank for is a MASA member but have requested we start a thread on he's behalf. (Silent but extremely violent) :P
This tank has taken quite some carefull planning due to the strange but yet amazing shape that runs from he's living room to the kitchen.
Here is the footprint and high density Polystyrene already in place:
From the living room area:
From the Kitchen Side:
And then the Glass (Holy Crap):
We will keep you guys updated with progress!!:1:

i found this little reef while browsing on zeovit.com and this reef is a stunner, it got a completley different feel comapred to all the other reefs i have seen, i think the fact that its aimed at gobies is what differentiates it from the norm

I wanted to make the thread title "bacteria in NSW vs RO & salt water" but I think that other differences are relevant.
I am striving for a LNS using bacteria (biodigest) and carbon source (vodca). And use NSW. Now, NSW also contains other bacteria, good and bad.
When using RO water, quoted from Wiki: "In practice, a fraction of the living bacteria can and do pass through RO membranes through minor imperfections."
I would like to open a discussing on the differences of these systems.
Is there any marine biologists out there that can talk about what good and bad bacteria come with NSW?

Looking for a kalk stirrer. If you have one, I have some money. Located in Pretoria, will pick up in Gauteng or pay for delivery.

Is this thing dead? It's turning green around the edges.
I have not seen polyps extend on it since about day 3. It's been in there for about 3 weeks.

O up here in jozi our first summer thunder storm and it usually comes with some power outages. So I had one. Preempting this I had done the following:
1. Bought the nice Tunze return 4000l with battery backup - should be arriving tomorrow thanks @
Anita
2. Hunted down and bought a battery operated air pump which was running in my tank during the power failure.
With summer coming and the thunder storms I would suggest peeps in jozi start to make their plans for power outages ....

Hi.
My name is Shafiq. I'm from the lowveld, Nelspruit.
Took interest in marine tanks awhile back and have been reading a lot of books and posts on this site.
Starting of the month my wife made a deal with me, no mods to my car and a less smoking = marine tank. Hope to get a tank end of the month, problem is my lfs asks too much for a setup. R10 000. And that's for tank, sump, skimmer and pumps which Seems ridicolous.size of the tank was 600X500X600.
I would love to have a 2meter long tank, have the perfect spot in my lounge for it,
Need to get in contact with someone who can either build me a setup that size with sump or someone who has a similiar setup for sale.
P.S. I stay in the lowveld, Nelspruit.
Thanks
Shafiq

Hi Reefers
We have been busy with our Indonesian supplier to get some SPECTACULAR HANDPICKED CORALS in for YOU!!!!:yeahdude::lol:
Below is the pictures of the handpicked specimens he will send us this week Thursday.
To celebrate our return to the MARINE trade we intend to sell these corals @ LESS 25% out of the box.
How will this work?
· You or someone else on your behalf need to pick up the corals @ Pet Stop before we introduce it into our system.
· All new corals that are not introduced into our system, even if it was not handpicked, qualify for this special.
· Unfortunately it need to be fair, so pre-booking without payment of deposit would not be excepted.
· Pre-paid specimens that are not picked up in time would not qualify for this special.
Now I hear the guys outside Pretoria and those guys that could not be @ Pet Stop in time @%&#^%*&(
You guys could make use of our existing special ordering system. How does it work?
· You EMAIL me a picture of a specific coral you are looking for
· I source it for you
· Once I receive a photo of the stock for you, I forward it to you
· You confirm that this is what you want with payment and when you intend to pick it up

I hope this is urgent enough and that it's not just me overreacting...
I bought some new livestock over the weekend and put that in my nano.
Since then I've lost a 3 mushroom corals. Completely gone. No traces left.
Now included in the livestock I bought was a saron shrimp.
Saron-Rectirostris (Purple-Legs-Marble-Shrimp)
Now the LFS said it's reef safe. Assured me of it.
I checked various websites. Some say it's reef safe. Some safe it's not.
Some forums say it's reef safe, some say steer clear away.
I suspect it's this oke that's eating the mushrooms. I awoke halfway through the night and when I checked he was sitting on the mushroom rock, at the spot where the latest victim was located at.
What should I do?
Other than him the tank has a sixline wrasse and a yellow prawn goby.
There is a crab living in the one piece of rock, but I'm quite sure it's an emerald crab. And it's been living there for a month now without any damage to any of my corals as of yet. Now a new addition to the tank and I lose a coral a day ever since.

Hi Hennie. I have a strange request. Can a salt refractometer be calibrated to read sugar concentration using a known sugar solution to calibrate it. Here's why!
Being a chef by profession we use refractometers to make ice cream by measuring the amount of sugar in the mixture which will tell us if the ice cream will freeze to hard or too soft. One can buy sugar refractometers but they are double the price of salt meters. So, I would like to buy a salt meter and calibrate it to read sugar. Can this be done, and if so, how? I know it's not marine related but I would appreciate your help where possible

This is for the SPS lovers - was won at MACNA
Quote:
Frags go for $400. The vendor that donated it to the raffle was offered $1500 at the show for it. He gave me a talk to make sure I could care for it properly too... haha. I was told by the vendor, since he was the importer of the piece, that I now have 25% of the total stock of this coral. The rest has gone to well known resellers.

I believe in natural, simple, easy to care for systems. The KISS principal, Keep It Simple Stupid.
So for me its big DSB systems and refugiums. With a nice size cheato ball.
But at the end of the day, its your choice.
The quote above was Riaan's advice in another thread and I like it so I would like to stick to it although it is almost too late. My sump started cracking and the water leaks became hectic.
While getting glass prices I got hold of a weird shaped tank that I have turned into a sump in the meantime. The dimensions are 1600lx600hx400w and I think that will leave me with 320l capacity. The first chamber will house the overflow from the sump, a wool filter and the skimmer. The sump has 6 chambers of which 5 will be full of live rock and the last one will have an overflow into a standard 4 ft tank that will have a pump area and as much as possible area for a DSB. What I have never understood well is the concept of a refugium. How do you suggest I build the 4ft sump to incorporate a fuge and what is the purpose of a refugium in simple as possible language.

Hi reefers.... How you guys doing? Great to be here... Im starting a brand new marine tank and really need some good advice...my tank size- 650x650x350... I have a ts1 protein skimmer, a reactor and a return pump.. Apparently thats sufficient for now as im a beginner?... I really need advice on lighting.. I wanted metal halides but apparently my corals will be burnt because of the depth of my tank. True or false?... Im looking for light that will bring out the colour and coral in my rank.. Advice would be much appreciated... Thanx:)

Hey guys
Had these shrooms for about 2 years and they have been doing really well (as shrooms normally do, lol) until about a month ago. They have started bleaching and withering away. I have about 5 species of shrooms in my tank, and the rest are all doing fine - it's only the common purples that are suffering.
I started the microbacter7 regime a little while ago to help get my nitrates down, which it has. I am wondering if this could be why they are unhappy? I have tried target feeding them, but no luck so far.
I also have a variety of LPS, leaters etc that are all fine. I'm very confuzzled.

Hi anybody got advice on lion fish?
-
Hi Guys
My Clowns are forever coming up with different behaviours that makes me break out in a sweat..
Now I have to mention..this happens when the lights are off...this morning I came down to see my Clown right at the bottom...tail touching Aragonite...

My Nemo has never done that..so still that for a moment I thought it was dead
but stuck on something.....but then SHEWWWWWWWW...it moved...
This is where they normally "sleep" or park during the day...actually more the one, than the other....although I have to add that it's usually "head down"..

I've come to the conclusion that I panic sometimes for the silliest things.. My worst panic attack was when the one gave me the odd "floater sleeping position"...WOW it
"swam" like a dead fish...on it's side..with the body breaking the surface... I was in tears and had the LFS test everything in my water and I also checked everything regarding my set-up as I was sure I must be missing something as THAT can't be "normal"...sigh...I still get the odd "floating sleeping position" which still freaks me out...!!!:eek:
Coming back to my Clown...it's swimming around in the Tank at about 2cm from the Aragonite...is that normal when lights are off...? Can't recall that it's ever been so low..it's almost like it's trying to "host" against everything, but yet not touching anything...:P
When light's go on my Clowns are "normal again"...

Hi all
Came home on Thursday just to find my DT cracked on side panel!!! Phoned the guy who build my tank and said he will only be back this wednesday and then he'll come round to fix it. The crack is on the side panel, going from the bottom, making a half circle and ending at the bottom again... I've siliconed a piece of glas over it and so far so good.
The problem is this, the DT is 500l, and I haven't got enough bins to put the SW and rocks in to empty the tank so the guy can remove panel to fix it.
Is there anybody in Pretoria area that I can maybe borrow some bins from... Please people, I beg of you.:whistling:
Thanks in advance

Hello reefers... i have had my tank running for almost a year now. there is no algea in the tank except between some polyps and zoas! now i dont know wht this algea persists and the other algea in the tank disappeared?
My question... how do i remove the algea? i cant brush it off cause it will kill the polyps. Whats the best way to kill this green hair algea, its stunting the growth of my coral as they cannot open fully.
any help will be appreciated... :)

Hey folks, please help busy designing a new tank (yea it is that time, time for an upgrade) and the more research I do on filtration the more confused I get LOL.
Tank size will be 1,500mm x 1,200mm x 600mm mixed reef, but SPS dominated. Priorities are a stable system & LNS
1. Live Rock Filtration
Live Rock minimal in display (i.e. just enough)
Live Rock in Sump to supplement minimal LR in display
2. Phosphate Control
Refugium (with reverse lighting) lots of Chaeto only, with a phosphate reactor & dosing Prodibio
OR
NP Pellet reactor (i.e. none of the above as I understand it?)
3. Ca, Mg & Alk Stability (supplemented with a Kalk Stirrer)
Calcium Reactor
Or
Dosing pumps
Also going to have
Carbon Reactor
Please let me know your thoughts on each point & help me make my decision LOL
Thanks in advance

Need some advice
I bought a nice fat fox face today. It was super active and happy in the guys tank. He put it in the bag for me and it went all off colour (thats normal I hear when they are stresses) and it was breathing heavy. I put the bag in a poly box then drove for 30min to home.
I pegged the bag in the sump and saw the fish was laying on its side and still off colour. I took out a small cup of water and put some in. I did this for 2hours every 30min. The fish was still laying on its side and breathing very heavy in the bag.
I put the fish in the tank and it slowly swam down and is now laying on its side at the back of the tank and still breathing heavy.
Is this because of too much stress? Is this normal with a fox face? I know they are a bit odd.. Is there anything I can do?

Howsit,
So my mates have convinced me to start a thread about my tank, I'm more into reading about everyone else's tanks..hahahaha
Anyway, its a fairly new setup...the rock was transfered from another tank of mine and 50% of the water as well so it was pretty much all cycled when I made the change to the new tank which was nice.
Here's a couple of pics

hello all, we are in the process of placing our order for our long awaited mauritus shipment.
i spend a month in mauritius every year and this year was lucky to witness catching techniques used and help scout the coast.
all fish are hand caught, just hands and net.....some cases just hands believe it or not;)
if there are any special orders wanted such as endemic fish to mauritius please contact us and we will check availability and order for you if available.
our supplier has a quota on gemmatums which is full at the moment with orders we are placing so special gemmatum orders will be for the customers that orderd a few months back.........."very , very limited", but should anyone cancell there order we will carry over to next person in line.
reccomendations of fish i saw that where extremely well priced include regal tangs, anthias, ARC EYE HAWK FISH - AWESOME, juvinile nasa tangs, sailfin tangs, long nose butterflies etc etc
we expect shipment to land in about 4 weeks as we will place the order and stock is specialy caught:yeahdude:
another moderatly rare, but scarcely available due to catching difficulty id the mustard tang or guttatus tyang.......search for it on google images and be plesently supprised (like a hybrid of a sailfin and gemmatum),however its its own specie.... i was lucky enough to photograph one on a dive there in april.......beautiful
thanks

It is with utter disdain and distaste that I am making this post, but enough is enough. I was forwarded the following message by a retailer and it is busy doing the rounds, I don’t know where it was posted or who started the rumors but be careful here, be very careful.
Quote:
To Make matters worse Sumeshan ,Keith (nemos janitors) and Alan (MASA KING) are planning retail outlets in every province , these stores will stock only their own products and live stock and will slash any prices on similar products! This will ruin dozons of small retailers? Now bear in mind, Alan is the same guy involved in Aquaria ?
|
I would like to state for the record right here and now that there is no agreement be it verbal or written between myself , Nemos Janitor or Aquaria.
Secondly has anybody thought of the logistics and cost of doing something like this, now for everybody that knows me, where the hell would I get that kind of money, I am an electrician with 3 kids 2 still at school. I drive a 1.4 Corsa Bakkie. Do I seem to be oozing money or give the impression I have big bucks. I also know both Aquaria and Nemos Janitor and highly doubt that they have even met each other, never mind going to go into business where 10’s of millions of rands would be involved.
These rumors are really going to hurt the industry in this country in so many ways and as I stated I have had enough. If anybody in the industry or hobbyist has been involved in the spreading of these rumors, I will expose your tactics in the open on this forum and please before you start shouting defamation and slander, remember defamation will only hold up if I say or post something that isn’t true. Unlike the idiot that has spread the above message. To the poster of the above, if this is true and you have the proof you are more than welcome and have an open invitation to post it in this thread. I now openly call you a liar and challenge you to defend your honor and integrity on this thread. I will also state now for the record that if any MASA sponsor has been involved in or perpetuated these rumors MASA will suspend your account with immediate effect.
To the person that has started this rumor let me explain what you have done to the industry. You are discouraging fair competition in the industry because most retailers will not support a wholesaler who sells retail at the same time, as they see it as buying from their competition, I cant say I blame them. Now by lying about the wholesalers the consumer is going to be the looser in the long run. You have brought MASA into disrepute as the Admin at MASA do not, on ethical grounds, get involved in the trade because we believe it would constitute a conflict of interests. Further to this when we find who you are you will face legal prosecution from MASA. I have a feeling the other 2 parties involved share the same sentiment.
There appears to be plenty under handed people involved in the marine trade at the moment and it is giving the industry a bad name and we will make it MASA’s mission to expose you. I have heard stories of people who knowingly import cyanide caught fish and sell to retailers, then the retailers and hobbyists then sit with the problems. MASA will expose you.
I now make an appeal to all retailers whether you are a sponsor or not, if anybody has contacted you, by email, SMS or phone calls with the above story please get in touch with us. If anybody knows where the above statement came from and who the author was please pm me..
I am sick and tired of the cr@p that goes on in this industry but have always ignored it, but somebody has now decided to make it personal, lets play.

HI,
Just seen my foxface floating at the top of my tank, not dead but breathing but he's not able to swim. Is he sick, do i take him out of the tank and assume he is dying??

I've been advised by most to use black 2mm ABS plastic sheet as a backing for my tank, however today I saw a tank with and was advised that its far simpler and as effective to stick black plastic film across the outside of the tank. The stuff that comes on rolls (sticker). I know coraline really likes plastic so would love the ABS on the inside, but also know that it will grow on the glass just as effectively if not a bit slower. What are your thoughts?
-
My little Bicolour Blennie is probably the coolest in the tank. Found him hiding in a snail shell. I put the shell in there for a big hermit, but he took it for himself.
The other day I switched a wave maker off and he parked himself in there. When ever I switch them off, I look carefully to see if he isn't in there before switching them on again.
-
has anyone used the Red Sea calcium/strontium powder before, anyone please advise me on how to make the solution as I made up some with RO water but the solution was like milk(30g in 1L RO).Adding this to the tank clouds it completly and after a few hours it cleared with lots of residual on the LR.Am I supposed to let it stand like Kalkwasser and only use the liquid above the settled sediment????
-
im looking for a marine tank that's around a meter in length or less. Nothing too expensive though.
Thanks

I want to drill 3 holes in the side of my tl550 by the chamber. I'm assuming that this is acrylic

And I'm certain there person you help with what ever will come back here and help some one else so it gos round and round and round with no end .
Eg of things pvc pipes old pumps that can be fix you name it any thing you are happy to just give away so what you guys think???
How this idea stated is when I lost quite a few thing when Trev went missing and there was a 2 reefers that helped me get on my feet they didn't even know me at all ,and today thanx to there help my tank is up and running ,it was there help that stopped me from quitting and that changed my life and I hope that this thred can do the same for others with all there reefers help I'm sure it can make lots of ppl happy the way I am .so I leave it in your hands guys let's make a difference "its al about reefers helping reefers"

Ok im a beginner so if i say things that dont make sense. Forgive & correct me please.
I've been hard at work setting up my tank.
Im a bit confused when it comes to the cycling part.
I added water about 3 weeks ago. Got my salinity & temperature right which reads as follows:
Sal - 1.026
Temp - 25 deg
A week after i added my water i added about 11 kgs of kenyan dead rock.
Then i bought 28 kgs of kenyan live rock which i added immediately.
The tanks been running about two weeks with the rock in & ive been testing my water
every few days. ammonia levels stay at 0.08 nitrite at 0 & nitrate at 0.
Is this normal or am i doing something wrong.
Ive read lots of articles on cycling and most of it says that im suppose to get an ammonia spike which then comes down & nitrates begin appearing & then comes down and nitrate should appear. but this isnt happening.
Please help

It has come to my attention that there is a new wholesaler trying to carve themselves a piece of the aquarium trade and some may have associated myself with them. I just wish to confirm that I have no relationship with them and the previous thread with this topic has nothing to do with them.
In any event it appears that the pricing change I was referring to was an outdated special price - 2010.
Competition is good but it has to be ethical and fair.
I apologise if I offended anyone, but this is not personal and I have no ulterior motive.

It's raining and I feel like rambling. Biodiversity. I am facinated by this. I also think it is a cool word. But for us aquarists it is restricted to marine animals, some good (for our tanks) and some bad (for our tanks). All animals are good for something, at least they think so. Even paracites have a purpose and a niche, although I can't think of one at the moment.
Looking at an aquarium we first notice the fish, then the corals and rocks and as we get closer and more interested, we can barely pick up movement in darker areas. Under and between rocks, crawling or slithering through the substrait. These are the things that facinate me. Yes I have some fish and corals but they are common. Everyone knows all about them and we all have or had them or at least seen them. But the creatures from the darker zones, thats where the real action is.
In my reef there are maybe 18 fish, but I would imagine that for each fish there are a hundred brittle stars, fifty bristle worms, a thousand amphipods and possably a million copepods. I never counted so don't hold me to those numbers.
But we rarely look at a tank and say "wow what a cool amphipod that is". Well I do, but I am a little strange.
Take a brittle star for instance, very cool animal. They hang out all day under a rock with one or two arms sticking out. I am not sure why they are hiding because almost nothing eats them. I guess it is because even though the fish don't eat them, they do pick them up, chew on them, then spit them out. Maybe that is the reason they hide. Good reason, anyway, how do they even know they are hiding? They have no eyes, no brain, and no ears. They don't even have a lateral line like all true fish have to help them get around. Instead of those sensors they have others more suited to a bottom dwelling animal. Even without eyes they can sense light. We can also if we just close our eyes we can tell light from dark. But what really facinates me about these and animals living in similar habitats is the fact that even without a brain, they are so much better at some things than we are. Maybe not basketball or pole vaulting but their ability to find food. We humans can smell certain foods from a few feet away but if you put blindfolds on us and put us in a room with 4 or 5 fans blowing the air all over the place I doubt we would know where the food was.
Snails and crabs can, as can brittle stars and bristle worms. Sharks can do that with blood and they can sense electrical signals but they have a brain.
I have a small tank with local snails, worms, crabs and shrimp. There is a small powerhead in there also. If I throw in a pellet, in about 5 seconds the seemingly sleeping snails all turn in the direction of the pellet and "race" to the exact place, trying to beat out the crabs. I don't know how much a dry pellet smells but I don't think it is all that much but I really don't have any idea how these "lower" animals can know the direction to go. Especially with the water swirling about, but they never falter, they know exactly what direction to go.
Amphipods are another cool animal. Most tanks don't have these as I collect them in the sea, they are different from copepods that are in all tanks as they are many times larger. We tend to call anything tiny a copepod but they are not all the same. Many of them are the young of crustaceans and most of them will die in a tank long before they get much larger than a real copepod. They haven't yet mastered the art of growing up away from the sea which is the reason we don't see baby hermit crabs or coral banded shrimp all over our tanks. Hermit crabs and shrimp spawn all the time as do all crabs and shrimp but the babies all die in a few days.
It must be frightening to be one of these animals, Oh wait, they have no brain so I guess they can't be frightened, good thing too because as a brittle star lays around waiting for a meal there are also, in the same hole bristle worms. They crawl all over each other but they don't seem to mind.
I guess these creatures make better neighbors than some of us.
-
I got a small nano which I use as quarantine/frag tank at the moment.
I recently saw that the copepods started invading the snail. Like literally climbing into its shell. Now I don't know whether this is normal, would they actually eat the snail? After this happened the snail just sat around for days!
I moved it to my bigger tank and now it's fine.
Weird thing is, I got a new snail, put it in the tank, same thing happened. Now in my big tank and its fine!
So is copepods swarming over my snail a problem or not?
I just don't want to leave it in there if it'll be consumed by copepod thingies.

Hi all I have been ploting building a vortex/cyclone filter for my tank. I probably will install it between overflow and sump to cut down on particles getting down to the sump without having to worry about using filter floss or something like that that can get clogged. It would just need to drain the cone through a small tap on the bottom every couple of days.
I see the koi and aquaculture guys use them and was wondering if there was a reason the didnt seem to be used in marines?

Hi, Im not too sure if i have posted my query in the correct forum. If not, i do apologize and if anyone can help move it it will be appreciated.
I want to get a few quotes for a reef tank and cabinet.
The cabinet must be 800mm in height. I need to insert my 1220x500x500mm sump.
The Main tank dimensions as advised by some of you here must be 1200x600x600 with left side overflow and inlet pump.
Thanks guys.

I started logging some parameters 2 months ago, on a weekly basis. Alk dosed with topup, rest on a daily basis. I adjust the weekly dosing based on the weekly measurements. Is this stable enough?? I see temp creeped up as summer starts.

My power head looks like it's rusting... could it be? I've only had it in there for 2 months. If it is rust, what do I do? Pitch it? I'll be so mad if it only lasted 2 months!
Never mind. It wiped off. :p

Hi there PPL
CW`s back.
Ive decided to build another tank since i got a 6mm 1220x500x440 tank for free and a 5mm 915x320x380 for FREEEEEEEE.
Bummer was both tanks had a cracked bottom. MMMM sounds like some adult movie. hehe
Well then.
Ive striped both tanks and already got the new bottom 8mm for the 1.2m (DT)
Still need to get the 6mm bottom for the 915mm sump. Ill order it tomorow.
Then ill also have to get my silicon (BLACK) and i also need to get the rest of the glass i will be bracing the DT with and dividing the sump chambers.
Oh ja, also have to build a stand.
The one reason im building a second setup is cos i want to brake down my current setup to tile the lounge and either sell it or just rebuild the DT with new glass and different overflow or ill sell it and build a cube. mmmm dono yet.
Second reason im building this tank i cant tell you yet.
You will just have to wait ppl. Sorrryyyyy:tt2:
So heres some pics.

Sump glass nice and clean.

DT glass also nice and clean and new 8mm bottom in front

The two cracked bottoms.

Cleaning the Ts2

Octopus OTP-2000

And thats it for now ppl.

Hi all just thought i should share this with you we recently did a upgrade on an aquarium and installed a NFP 509 Nitrate filter on an aquarium of 600L along with a 32ml per minute feed pump.

The system already had Aquatronica with redox probe and we also added a A/T dosing pump to feed the denitrator with the nitrate fluid as well as adding other additives.
Placed the probe in the reactor hooked the 32ml dosing pump onto the inlet to the reactor and draws water from the sump, used one dosing pump from the A/T to feed the nitrate fluid. Filled the reactor with aquarium water. Plug all in, did a little programing.
Calibrated the redox probe set it to switch at -250mv (@-251 switches on and off @-249)
Set dosing pump to feed 3ml nitrate fluid per 24hrs.
This was done on the 27/08/2011 nitrate level was 24ppm using the H2Ocean Nitrate test kit (high range test) and on the 6/09/2011 the level was 1ppm using the same kit (low range test). This is the lowest the level has been since the aquarium was started over 1 year ago.

Ok so i dunno about u guys but the electrics around my sump was just getting outta control.
Here's something i tried out & works like a bomb !

The Mess !!!!
Installed a distribution board & powered it from the plug socket.
Give u an idea on what it looked like afterwards. Made so much more space under there !

Started building a cabinet around the tank.
Came out pretty neat !
Now i need to get some time to do the top !

Hey guys,
My tank has been running lekker from the word go. Keeping up with parameters.
4 Months down the line i'm battling with my skimmer.
When i look at the cup, it's full of "almost clear" water (slightly green). Apposed to the sludgy dirty green. Ok so it's filling faster than it should, but when i clean the cup & place it back, the bubbles are at the right level. 12 hours later, i'm back to the same point.
What's causing the bubbles to rise intermittently like this ?!
;) My pride & joy: ;)

Jeaques caught a beautiful cleaner shrimp, will the lions eat it or should he put it in my tank?

Any body that can help me find his owner pm me please. I have 2 dogs of my own and need to find owner asap otherwise have to take to SPCA. Not by choice
-
I just bought a toadstooll and am busy aclimating it, I saw this little guy climbing the bag. Is he safe or should he be flushed?
-
I would like to know if there is a problem with my tube worm as the feathers have got much shorter, I have nothing in the tank that could be eating it, the feathers were long and beautiful and four days ago I noticed they were shorter , thinking he wasn't fully opened but he is.
Is there a problem with him or do they shed the "feathers"????????

rakabos .. these are the zoas I told you about. Eat your heart out! lol
These are some vietnam zoas that I was given to try and save for them. How do you manage to screw up zoas so badly and in only 1 week?? I have never seen zoas in such bad shape! I got them in my DT now
At the moment they are improving but I dont think that they will be 100% .. So far I have seen a few zoas opening slowly after 1 day in my tank..
Loki, you know where these came from ;) (NB these are not from Loki lol)

When the concept of Triple Five Aquarium Solutions was formulated we decided that one of the key factors to the success of the D-D brands in South Africa would be competitive pricing and a comprehensive range of products. We wanted to be able to supply product at prices available from overseas online stores and very close to the recommended UK price.
We have structured our recommended pricing accordingly and give examples.
Example skimmer.
Our recommended retail price on a Deltec APF600 skimmer is R4304.72
D-D are in the process of updating the skimmer prices. So lets look at an ex sponsors pricing from their web site.
Their price is EUR 365.00 plus shipping
So if one wants to import themselves then we can assume the following.
EUR 365.00 = R3650.00 if the exchange rate is R10.00 to the EUR
vat on R3650.00 = R511.00
Total price if bought on line= R4161.00 + transport.
If bought from a SA retailer that stocks our product R4304.72 recommended.
Protein Skimmer Deltec Skimmer, Sewatec.de,Protein Skimmer, Deltec Skimmer,
Example Giesemann globe
Our recommended retail price on a giesemann aquablue+ 54w globe is R309.28
D-D price is 21.49 pounds
British pound 21.49 = R257.88
Add Vat and the price to import from the UK is R293.98
Aquarium Lighting | T5 Lighting | Deltec Skimmers | The Aquarium Solution
Example D-D ro unit 50 US gpd
Our recommended price is R1227.61
D-D price is British pound 89.99
British pound 89.99 = R1079.88
Add VAT to the price to import from the UK is R1231.06
50 Gallon RO 50 Unit | Deltec USA | Phosphate Removers | The Aquarium Solution
So from the above the consumer and retailer can clearly see that Triple Five Aquarium Solutions is relisticaly pricing their products.
Where can D-D products be obtained from?
All of our products are available from selected LFS. So ask at your LFS and if they do not want to help then contact us and we will put you in touch with a LFS closest to you.
Triple Five Aquarium Solutions, bringing quality European products to the South African hobbyist at international prices.

Found this worm crawling on my glass today.
It normally sticks it tentacles out of the rock, but never seen it out.
It looks llike those stringy things are part of its head.
Maybe some kind of a spaggeti worm?

Okay I've got a Boyu Tl450 with a fire shrimp, a damsel and a dottyback
I added the dottyback yesterday and it gave the damsel and the shrimp a bit of grief, the tank seems to be settled but my damsel is in huge distress. It doesn't want to move from the corner of the tank, it won't even come up for food anymore.
The damsel had a bit of colour during feeding yesterday but today it's just sulking in the corner.
Is this a recoverable situation? What can I do? Was it a mistake to put more than one fish in my Nano?

Hi Guys
Having been an aquarist for 5/6 years now and having setup 3 tanks, I notice that price fixing is a huge problem. We have a large distributer in SA representing several brands that enforce "recommended" selling prices.
I have recently pointed out to some local retailers that another retailer is offering the product at a cheaper price than them only be to told that the cheaper retailer's price is wrong and the website is being teared down.
Is this practice not breacing our competition law? I would like to submit a complaint to the competition commission as the retailer should be able to sell at whatever he price he chooses to.
What do you guys think?

Zayd

There are quite a few fires around our area. If we have to evacuate, we'll have to cut off the power, before we go. :(
Is there anything I can do to help the fish while we're gone, if we have to go? I don't have a battery backup.

I am wanting to get some clown fish and breed them. What kind should I get? I love the black and white ones. What size tank? What all do I need? And what does the water levels need to be?
-
So I am looking to add some sort of tree looking coral to my tank in the background.
The will be positioned left and right of the tank which means on the left they will be AROUND (not directly infront) of the flow pump and on the right they will be AROUND not in front of the return.
I would like something with a lot of branches and pref colorful too. Kenya are well.... BROWN....
Anyone got some idea's. As for light they will be getting full light from the MH and T5's for 7 hours a day.
Thank you

Power outages, a real scurge to the aquarist. if you are lucky enough to already own a TUNZE electronic pump all you need is a 6105.500 safety connector (R 420.00) & a small 12 volt gate battery
(R 150.00-R170.00) at any gate shop or hobby shop. You can also add a charger which then recharges the battery when power comes on again.(220.00) A1 Radio
The saftey connector will circulate 1 electronic pump for a few hours or power an 1070.05 silence return pump for a few hours. you wont even see that it has come on it is an instant change on and off.

No more dead stuff
Just another example as to why TUNZE is superior

I just cleaned my canister filter that I used on my FW tank and want to hook it up to my tank(SW). What would be best to use in it?
At the moment was thinking of putting in carbon and some filter floss and the filter pad that came with it? What else should I put it?
Thanks

Hi all.
I am trying to figure out if I should get a ro unit. From a convenience standpoint I think definitely yes, but not sure from a cost standpoint. My main concern is cartridge replacement. How often should they be replaced? Is it at a certain no of liters or at a certain time interval like every year? I only use about 20l per week so it wont be working too hard as the smallest units seem to be 50gpd.

Which one is better?
I'm using closed cell foam (Polyethylene) on my setup. I prefer the black strip under the tank instead of the white polystyrene.
But which one is better. I know polystyrene is available in different hardness levels.
Which one does have the better properties
- What is the weight limit that each type can support.
- Do they build up memory?
- Do they collapse eventually?
- Water retention, including mildew resistant, rot resistant and will not discolour.
I know the closed cell foam cuts easier and neater than the polystyrene. And it does not break or give that little bits off. And kids cannot discover that they can stick their fingers into the support.
Any comments.

Hey reefers. I wanted to run this by. I keep my alk at around 9 (trying to keep it as stable as possible) .. Ca Im still getting up (at 380 last I checked) .. Now I have red sea coral pro salt, it has an Alk of 12 and Ca of 450. If I do a water change then thats going to mess with my parameters. Should I increase my alk to say ...11? That way a water change wont have much of an effect on my parameters.
Also, I would like to know what are the alk, ca and mg of the normal seachem reef salt? I want to change to that when my red sea is finished :)
Thanks kids :)

Hey guys
So I'm thinking about getting a small eel, trying to do as much research as possible before going ahead.
First off - there are plenty of both species near Durban - are there any restrictions on catching them? (i've got the standard marine collecting license)
Secondly - what advice can you give? Which one is a better candidate? I know they are both escape artists, and can give your filtration quite a klap. Also that crustacenas and shrimps can and will be preyed upon, there are stories that if they are kept well fed this is not much of an issue.
A question I have is that when diving I often see caves shared by coral banded shrimp and morays - why is this, if they are its natural prey?
Anyway, any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.
Cheers
Dan

Some photos of critters in my DSBs....

Some kind of worm the mud bed.

Bristle worm

Another worm. There are many different species in your DSB.

Copepod

Bubbles making their way up through the DSB. It could be either oxygen or nitrogen. At first I thought nitrogen, but then realised that it wasn't a totally anaerobic zone, as there is algae growing up against the glass. Any thoughts?

More worm action:)

guys we are seeing more and more hybrid/ cross bred fish harvested from the wild these days, have they always occurred and are just being brought to our attention now because they are classed as rare and expensive fish or are they becoming more frequent as a result of climate change?
EG: species traveling out of their terratories due to ocean current and temperature changes and now mating with other simular species/
i know Centropyge shepardi i has always been around and a hybrid of a coral beauty and a rusty angel. (i stand to correction @
Yuri) but we are seeing more and more trade of unusual fish
what is the reason?

Hi to all, I have a 100 l marine tank which has been runnung for a year now. Two months ago I have installed a sump/refugium with a six inch DSB and topped with live rock (I have used playsand).Reason for this is that I like to have a NNR. I can see some activity in the refugium, like amphipods, copepods, bristlestars etc. After five weeks I began to see worm activity at the top of the DSB.
My query is how long will it take to cycle the DSB and begin to see some N2 bubbles which means that the DSB is working as it should. Also I am not sure if I have used the correct sand. Any one can help?

What's this pod with gold inside?

Is this Astplasia?
It's so small, I don't think I can use the astplasiax on it. I'm afraid of hurting the zoas. Should I wait until it gets bigger? Is that what it is? There are two on that little frag.

Good day all,
Been a long while since I was last online here. Upgraded my lighting (was 2x T5 54W . now 4x T5 54W (2x Arctinic and 2x 12000)) and put the entire systems on an Aqua Medic AT Controller to regulate everything - mostly temp right now (heater and chiller within 0.5 degree delta) and flow pumps. Kalk and C02 are next steps once I get the pH probe to read properly - hassle of being colour blind I guess means I like the actual read out as opposed to those colour test. :)
Just something I have picked up recently was a decline in my kH combined with a new pest red algae. I thought this was originally the Tropic Marin Pro salt I was using to mix up with my RO water. Adding Triple buffer works well but I have never had this problem before and this used to be rock solid stable. Could the below affect this?
I have been told that this is cyano bacteria and is a real pain in controlling. I am syphoning up where possible and also "blowing": this off the SPS's and collecting in a net / directing to the skimmer for extraction. Either way this is becoming a serious pain the behind. I have been advised to add a chemical to sort this out but I am skeptical about "reef safe" methods. I have a SPS with LR and fish.
Any ideas on how to resolve this?
Temp - 25.5
SG - 1.026
pH - 8.4
Calcium - 400
Carbon reactor - full time one
Phosphates - zero (thanks reactor)
kH - averages at 7 but drops to 4 recently
UV - always on
nitrite - 0.01
nitrate - 10-20 (always has been for the last year)
Ammonia - 0 to 0.25
Tank size - 250 litre. I change 100L every 2-3 weeks.

Please can someone help to solve this mystery, I've lost a blennie and a large goldie (+/-7cm) this week without out ANY trace of them not even 'n piece fin or bone floating around. Checked everywhere, even the filters and pumps. What I have in the tank:
1xTomato clown hosting in a small bubble tip anemone
1xGreen chromis
1xCommon clown
2xYellowtail Damsels
1xPyjama Cardinal
1xSmall Cleaner Shrimp
1xBlue Knuckle Hermit
1xPipeworm
1xSmall Clam
2/3xBrittle Starfish
Mushrooms, Pipe organ polyps, Small hammer and frogspawn, Large Xenia on live rock (which was added recently) are in the tank.
It is obviously happening at night, since we only noticed the missing fish in the morning after being perfectly fine and feeding the previous evening.
What should I look for, should I destroy my scaping in order to find out what might be lurking underneath(not really keen on it since everything is established for a while now)?

Anyone know the products from aquapharm, Kalkwasser and ca supplement?

So its been a hard long road for me and my tank and already thinking of upgrades and maybe even bigger tank. My first prize though is to keep the DT inside and to move the sump and all other equipment outside.
Now been doing research asked @
dallasg and @
maxisoft and the first angle was NOT to put it outside due to our extreme temperatures in Jozi. With the purchase of a RO unit, looking at a chiller I am starting to think ****IF***** I start the upgrade process I want the engine room outside.
No I am lucky where my tank is the joining wall for the DT is so I can drill a 22 hole in the wall to run the plumbing and electronics :)
My worries are what are the pit falls heat freezing ....
experiences from anyone?
Thanks guys

Here are some photos of various corals etc. Just a warning to those thinking of getting into the world of macro.... it's totally addicitive, and will flatten you bank balance faster than starting a marine tank!

Poccillopora

A worm feeding on fish feaces.

Red Shroom.

Wood Polyp. That's what I know them as. Feel free to correct the names.

Pin cusion polyps. You can see the tiny tentacles, which are not easily visible to the naked eye, at the end of the stalks.
More shrooms.

And more...

I don't know if these are stunted brown star polyps, or a small species on their own? They've been this size (2mm high) for several years now.

Toadstool leather growing in full light.
I'll follow up with some pictures of critters that we find in our DSBs, when I get some time.

I just noticed my skimmer while I was watching the corals eating the lance fish I fed them, seems to be working MORE at night.
I found out the right level to keep the skimmer skimming and had it the whole day going along, looked at it about an hour after total lights out in my house and noticed the bubbles going mad :)
Does a skimmer work more at night than it does during the day?

Prodibio BIODIGEST and BIOPTIM every second week.
I occasionally use Fluval Carbon and Kent Phosphate Sponge.
Other info and photo's. Hi
Have had this coral for about 1 month, expanded well and used to feed at night. It always used to shrink at times and then expand after a few hours. Now does not expand at all and have brown marks on its side.
Other stuff around it.
- My Clown Goby often "hosts" in it.
- It fell about 2 cm onto the sand three weeks ago when I added a new coral. Expanded and feed fine after this incident.
- Thought it looked like an alkalinity burn, but alkalinity has been stable forever.
- All the other corals are healthy and expanding well.
- It is downstream from a (Anthelia sp.?) softy, not touching. My Blasto is downstreem as well, but not effected. Blue waving hand (Anthelia sp.) ? - Marine Aquariums of South Africa
- I have read that they can be sensitive to aluminium based phosphate media, have not used it for 10 days now.
Is there anything I can do for it?
Can not seam to upload photos at the moment, will try tomorrow again.
-
It lives in a hole in my LR.
What is it?

Hi
I have been noticing these funny white "plumes" in the dark, low flow area of my filter this week. Now saw one inside my tank tonight.
The are cream, looks like a elongated polyp and a prickly (looks like it, did not touch it) tentacles sticking out of their head. Is about 8mm high, 3mm diameter.
I saw them in Elite's Durbanville's little fish holding tanks as well a month ago.
Sorry of the photo, struggling to get my camera to focus on it.
Are they good or bad, if bad, how do I get rid of them?

Howsit everyone,
How much internal flow would you recommend on a 600X450X450h tank?
At the moment I've got the return on the one side of the tank and a seio superflow 1000lph on the other side....not sure if it is enough, maybe another seio is required??
Cheers

I keep hearing a popping noise coming from my tank...
I can't see anything in there that's doing it.
At first, I thought it was my larger hermit, banging his shell against the glass, but that's not it. It's louder than that, and he wasn't near the glass when i just heard it.
It's something else...
Just does it once in awhile.

For those who have read my previous thread, My tank was ready to POP. Its 1220mm x 450mm x 500mm.
Luckily its a newly set up tank and only has live rock in it. This was supposed to be my first and MAIN project and I'm a little disappointed and was ready to throw in the towel even though i technically haven't started yet. But i WILL persevere!!!
I managed to drain the feature tank, wasting half of that precious NEW... SALT WATER (and nutrients) and left the fans on to circulate the water.
The Sump- I managed to insert to outlet pipe into the skimmer compartment and leave that running.
I hope it hasn't caused any long lasting effects. The "roaches" are still crawling all over the rocks and I spotted some tiny white worms with orange bristles (Have no clue what they are) and they moving around as happy as can be. They are about a third of a mm thick and about 10 - 20mm long, in case someone may inform me what they are called...
I've put down a deposit on a new tank.
The dimensions are 1200x450x700. Apparently the glue is going to be oven baked... is this OK? or normal? Luckily its under warranty.
Im SOOO excited. Ill be using the advice from Dorry pets to create a new sump with the "river sand effect". Ill quickly fix the current tank and re-enforce it a bit better and then use it. I wont be planning on filling it up to the brim so im sure itll work nicely. As soon as its up and ready, which will only be at the end of the month, ill post a picture. It'll be empty, I warning upfront. I hope that all goes well...
Good luck to me....

I accidentally did a water change with RO, instead of saltwater!
I grabbed the wrong containers.
Did the change yesterday, and this morning noticed the Xenia's foot coming off of the frag rock, and it's dropping polyps all over the place.
So, I started checking water, and the salinity was 1.2.
OMG. I'm trying to gradually bring it back up to 1.25.
How fast can I bring it up?
Is there anything I can do to save the Xenia?
Everything else seems ok.
Yesterday's reading before water change.
Salinity 1.0248
PH 8.3
Ammonia .25
Nitrite .25
Nitrate 5.0
Phosphate .5
Calcium 420
dhk 10 ppmkh 179
Mag 1260
Iodine .09
Now
Salinity 1.022 (was 1.02)
PH 8.2
dhk 10 ppmkh 179
Nitrite .25
Nitrate 0
Ammonia .25
Phosphate .25
Only other thing I did was to add some additional argonite to the refugium.

The type of Sulphur reactor i'm looking for.

I have a 1.2m tank with 6mm glass all around. I have a 10mm base. I checked this morning and the reinforcing piece of glass at the top center came loose. The font part was lying into the water. I measured the tank and it has grown by 5mm.
Do i run the risk of the fish tank bursting for good?
I have just spent R8000 and can not afford another R2000 just yet.
WHat can i do?

Hi all
We use ro water to calibrate or Refractometer,ro does not have any salt in ok. Now so if your ro water temp is 10 or 20 or30 will it make a diff in the calibration?
If there is no salt you can set it at 0? no mater the temp of the ro? Just want to see if I'm missing something.

Hey everyone
Well finally it's time for me to think on what career I would like to start one day:yeahdude:. I'm really interested in either micro biology or marine biology as my first Bsc degree. Now I know there are a lot of super smart people on this forum:whistling:, now smart people normally have contacts in high places, hahaha now before you get carried away I'm not asking for a job, only in gr11 now. I would like to know how I can arrange an interview or shadow a marine biologist for a day at Ushaka this vacation. I just want to get an overview of the career and see if it could be something I would enjoy. Please PM me with any info or just reply on the thread.
Thanks a million

Has anybody done the calculations on how much saving if any there are to buying your own RO unit opposed to buying water (both RO and salt) at the LFS.
Is there a rough estimate of how many liters a 1kg, 2kg, 10kg etc box of salt mix equates to in liters?

Hi I am looking at restocking my tank as I used to have a small shoal of thornfish (bad idea) who started off small like 15mm and ended up eating all there tankmates and eventualy each other.
So this time around I whant to get it right so I'm asking the experts first. I have a 4ft tank with 3ft sump.
I was thinking of having maby one convict sergon and a few goldies and cromis and some corals are these all compatable if so how many of each could I have in this tank and what order should I introduce them.
Thanks

Hi I would like some advice from you guys, would you suggest a coast to coast overflow with two holes drilled in the tank or a smaller overflow box in a corner with also the two holes drilled? Tank dimmentions are 61cm * 41cm * 58cm (length, width, height or depth from top to bottom). Any advice would be appreciated.

Afternoon boys ang girls!
My new tank is finally up and running and a week into the cycling process. I purchased slagters beautiful monster from him and will hopefully continue the fantastic work he did in the tank.
I made a few adjustments to the setup he had. First I put glass over the slits in the overflow box. Works like a charm now with great surface skimming. Then I changed the sump around taking out the baffles and making the DSB bigger. I have plans to add on an ATU and a refugium at a later stage. I also modified tghe return piping as the return pump I got had a bigger connection than the one he had on the tank.
I've never been the most patient of people so taking almost 2 weeks from collecting the tank to being able to start filling it was torture. The first issue I had was around the hanging of the lights. My initial idea was to hang them from the ceiling, only to realise that I have pressed steel ceilings and didn't want to damage them .. so my Dad suggested I get some brackets to attach to the wall and hang it from there ... great idea! So off to Mica, purchase the brackets and bolts, measure everything up, drill the holes for the left bracket, connect it all up and voila! Then upon doing a weight test this happened!!
Turns out the bricks in the wall are old!! Soooo I got myself some threaded steel and drilled all the way to the outside of the wall, whacked on a large washer on the outside and voila
IT took me 2 looooong weeks to fill the tank with RO water ... isnt it typical how work/life gets in the way of making water!
I'm amazed at the amount of muck the skimmer was taking off. I figured it would be clean water! The skimmer is a ReefOctopus NW150, thanks to flamming angel
A week later I was back off to Sean's place (slagter) to fetch the rock he had been cycling for me for the 4 weeks or so it took me get the tank ready.
There is life in my tank!! *bounce* *bounce* I got rather excited when I spotted this ....
Only to be told to NUKE IT! Thankfully I have a supply of Aptasia-X and nuked the little swine.
So this where I am today. Every day I find myself sitting for hours staring at rock. I'm told this is what all newbies go through :) I even got excited when I spotted my first bit of green algae!
There is a small white tube looking thing with a head with tentacles on it that disappears back into itself when i come closer. I have no idea what it is .. I'll try and get some shots of it, and I've also spotted some purple looking tubes (you can see them if you look closely in the picture above) ... man this is exciting! :)
Thanks for reading this far!
Next on the list of things to do is scaping! :)

Hi All
I read about aquascaping with cement. I have put a cement block in my koi pond before. Anybody with knowledge of any dangers of putting stuff made of cement in a marine tank? I would think that it be ok if cement is properly set (say after a week or two).
Any ideas welcome.

Detailed help requestAre you experiencing any problems in your tank?Yes
Brief DescriptionTissue necrosis on SPS colony
Ive had a fairly large acro for about 2 months that started showing slight necrosis on some of its tips on wednesday. This morning When I checked on it, It was also showing tissue necrosis in the middle of the colony as well as well as the tips getting worse, which was not there last night before lights off.
So to sum it up Its lossing tissue in the middle and some of the tips at the same time?
Tank size45cm x 45cm x 45cm
System Volumeapprox 100l
How long has your tank been running?4-5 months
What livestock do you have?SPS corals + a few softies and LPS approx 8 fish
recently split bubble tip anemone (not very healthy either)????
Water ParametersKH 8
Calcium 450
phosphate not detectable
Magnesium not measured
PH 8.2
Nitrate detectable but very low
Nitrate 0
Ammonia 0
Salinity LFS salt water (cheap hydrometer shows constant reading)
Temp 24-25
What lighting is over the tank?150 watt halide
On friday last week I changed the bulb from a 10k dymax to a 20k BLV (can this be the cause? its not as bright as the old 10K bulb?)
Pumps and equipmentI have 3x 200l pumps to turbo charge the water + approx 8000l of flow pumps
MaintenanceDaily buffer of KH (seachem)
Daily buffer of calcium (seachem)
Daily dose of Special Blend
weekly 15l water change
Other info and photo's.So to sum it up Its lossing tissue in the middle and some of the tips at the same time? Ive had tissue recession on many of my other corals at some stage, but in the past its always been from the bottom, which I put down to KH fluctuations and low nutrients.
None of my other SPS corals are bleaching at the moment, but neither are any of them growing at the moment????:(
I have had a bubble tip anemone split recently and then start to bleach....can there be chemical warefare....none of my corals are touching.....
I am completely puzzled by what can cause this and what I can do to stop it I have invested a lot of time getting all my params as stable as possible.
What can be the cause?
What do I do? I dont really want to frag any of my corals....

Guys and gals
I need some clarification of what skimming web means.
Does it mean every second there are some drops into the bottle attached to the cap. Does it mean there is a constant flow of skim mate into the bottle?
I am never sure if i am skimming wet or i am just skimming normal.
Also what is the optimal. When the bubbles are right at the top touching the top cap of the skimmer or when there is a health amount of bubbles come over the side?
Thanks for the advise
-
Please
I have an orange rick thats splitting so if anybody wants to swop the split for another colour than that would be awesome aswell
Thanks

Hi all. My clowns laid eggs on monday. This is probably the 10th time and I only saw the fry hatched once:blush:.Looks like there is a million of them when they hatch.I tried to hose them out and put them in a guppy net but they all died:(.Think it was to much stress suck them out in a bucket and put them back in a net ext....
Lets hope this time it will go better:)
My Questions
How do I catch the fry? ideas on making a fry trap. Will a guppy breading net work?
Then when we catch it what to feed and where to get the food?
Thank you

Found a good deal online for the Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3. I've been looking for a general purpose zoom such as the 18-135 (I have a Canon 450D body) but not find anything that shouts great deal - until this one.
Anyone got any experience with this lens? I know it is not the most fantastic, but for me and my general purpose walking around photography it should be fine. Just need a few second opinions.
thanks

Hey all
I have one of the old school ReefTek TS3 skimmers with 2 x Octopus 2000 pumps, it's a good few years old now and I'm getting a bit tired of these pumps shocking me, it's starting to bite quite a bit now, lol.
Has anybody found a direct replacement pump that fits perfectly in place of the Octopus 2000? Preferably something with a needle or pin wheel?
Thanks.

The Metal Halide is about 6 months old, the actincs about a year.
Unit sells for R4200, I want R1000 neg.

Hi all,
just wonderign about the flow a reef tank sould have from the sump to the tank.
My system is running on 3.8 times an hour and before that it was 10.3 times I am still waiting for a impeller for my one pump.
I know the total flow of a reeftank sould be 10 times an hour but the net or the marine books I have says nothing about the flow from the sump to the tank.
Kind regards

Hi all, after seeing some of the older MASA members showing off there awesome DIY skimmers :drool5: here I thought I should put my DIY skills to the test and see if I could build a skimmer that could save me thousands of Rands, and so I think have accomplished my goal:blush:, As im quite satisfied at the moment and it will be ready for action as soon as someone can advise me which pump will work best, as I have read that a slow flow rate trough the skimmer is better :confused1:
(
[reefkeeping.com] ).
So the criteria would be a pump thats not too strong and should have a suitable impeller? Any ideas would be appreciated. now heres some pics...
First of I use a cheap cereal dispenser to make the reaction chamber:whistling::biggrin:.
