If this is covered please forgive me. Woke up with a bright light in my head:)
I have been keeping marines for years but am a complete newbie when it comes to all the new equipment available to help with keeping a tank in top condition.
How about a sticky with what equipment to add to your system. Some things like skimmers I know about but others not so sure. There must be "have to have" and "cool to have" .
Meaning ;
Skimmer. Most people will agree this is a have to have. As far as i know it removes small particles from the water.
calcium reactor, really needed or just make it easier to keep calcium at proper level?
Kalkwasser Have no clue what it does or if it is needed or just helps
Electronic testers, etc. Stuff you can leave on so that you can check all is ok without having to worry about getting out the test kit for this or that.
There is a lot of other equipment that I am not sure of where to find it or what it does and I am sure a lot of other people, "ecspeccialy" (dit is n groot woord:whistling:) those who are new to the hobby.
If this has been done please point me in the right direction.
Cheers
Geoff

Those Tunze Nanostream pumps need to come with a warning about the strength of those magnets. I got one the other day (because they are, in fact, awesome circulation pumps), and for the second time in my life, I underestimated the strength of the magnet, tried to pull them apart, lost my grip, thumb slipped and WHAM! I can't believe how much pain there was. And I've experienced childbirth, and a torsed ovary, so I'm no whimp... but damn that hurt! :(

Hi guyz. I need some advice, i need to do my overflow on a tank i built. Its not a big tank so im thinking of using 25mm pvc. I want to drill the bottom, but i DONT want to build a box of any kind, not even a skinny one. So i was thinking of using a 110mm pvc pipe to act as a overflow box. With a modified durso in it. When i say modified i mean i'll have no 90' elbow coming out from the t piece. So water will enter the standpipe horizontally. Will it be silent? I will install a valve on the outlet to control the water level in the 110mm pvc pipe...

Hallo every one at MASA. Hope to learn alot!

Hi,
I started noticing a clicking noise about 2 weeks ago and saw a little shrimp that lives in the one pump in the tank. Then last week my coral beauty disappeared and my Borneman anenomes aren't anywhere to be seen either anymore. It looks like a mantis shrimp or a pistol shrimp it's impossible to get a pic of him because he disappears into the pump everytime he spots me but will try again to get a pic of him to see what shrimp he is exactly.
I don't want to keep him in my tank in case it is him that killed my coral beauty and the anenomes. Is anyone interested in taking him?
-
How much smaller can I make my stand in relation to the tank ? I am thinking about 10 cm on the width , length would remain correct .
Any possible issues ?

Hi there everyone... I know I have been scarce from Masa for the last year. There is a sad story behind the absence but it is one that rears its ugly head from time to time in this hobby. To get you up to speed, I used to have a AquaH20 250 litre system with 100 lt sump. It was a nice system and was jsut maturing at about a year old when I arrived home to find the front pane had cracked from top right corner to bottom left. There was only about 5cm of water left in the tank. I lost all my corals, but the nennie, the shrimp, the fox face and the coral beauty survived thanks to some wonderful people who took them in at very short notice.
And there the story has remained for 10 months. 2 months ago, for my birthday, my wonderful wife managed to reaquire the Boyu nano that I had when i first started out in this hobby. I got the tank up and running after some TLC and we were finally able to get some of the livestock back :) However it was way too small for the nennie which has now grown HUGE so that was donated to guys who were looking after the fish. Currently I have a foxface, dragon wrasse, sergent major, hammer coral, soft orange coral (not sure of ID) and a clam.
Now as a pleasent surprise, our LFS had a tank for sale which included hardware. But since I still had my old hardware, in perfect working order, from the old tank, I queried the price sance equipment... and hay, now I have a great 1220(l)x450(w)x400(h) that I am now putting together. It came with a 100x350x350 partitioned sump.
The last 2 weeks have been planning how things are going to work. I am planning on keeping a mixed reef of softies and lps. I have planned a DIY light hood using aluminium and pine plywood, the design I will put up in the lighting forum once it is complete. However I will most likely be running 4x2ft T5 (2 white, 2 blue), 4x4ft T5 (2 white, 2 blue), 1x2ft T8 (actinic). I am not planning to keep sps and if in future I decide to go with another nennie I will look at perhaps a MH. But that will not be for a long time yet....
As for the sump, I am planning to run my Tunze comline Doc skimmer, small DSB (5kg aragonite), liverock/refugium, my DIY carbon reactor, 0.5 HP Halea chiller, and a 2500lph return. I will be fitting a 20watt standard energy saver light over the refugium. I have about 10kg live rock for the refugium.
As for the display.... I have chosen to go with Aragonite (a long and arduous internal debate as to the truth about sand releasing silicates and leading to phospate problems). I will have about 15kg in the display. I also have about 60 kg of live rock that I will be using for the scaping. The scaping design is still in the processes of being thought about.... and I was wondering about using egg crate to design a skeleton onto which I could fix liverock. (comments please ;)). For flow I have a Seio 550lph powerhead and a sunsun 12000 lph powerhead. There is also the return pump. I may add another sunsun.
I will post pics for you photo hungry buggers as soon as I get around to taking some. Any suggestions and comments are most welcome!! It is really the most exciting time to be back in this hobby!!

Thanks

I took this photo a while back, but it still baffles me any opinions would be welcomed.
I was snorkelling and came across this filefish with these weird tufts of eggs in front of its eyes and on its snout.
It looked as if the fish was fanning the "eggs" with its pectorals, but this could just be coincidental, although it is interesting to note that the eggs were placed very symmetrical on both sides of the head.
I took some photos in a small glass container and a few of the eggs came loose and floated about they definitely looked like eggs of some sort.
Unfortunately (as is always the case
) I didnt have a very good camera available, so the photo is a bit bad I keyed out the background in photoshop for a little contrast, but the eggs are not very visible.
Anybody with any ideas/theories on whats going on here?

Detailed help requestAre you experiencing any problems in your tank? Yes
Brief Description Over the last year or so water has taken on a green hue.
Tank size 1.5 x 700 x 700
System Volume +- 700l
How long has your tank been running? 2 years
What livestock do you have? Regal, Nasau, foxface, coral beauty, 7 Pygamas and 4 Flame Gobies
GTBA, Purple Nennie, Giant clam, Anemone torch corals, Gorgonian + too many more to mention
Water Parameters temp @26/27
all other params are within med bordering to high but have steadily been coming down over the last 2 months.
Had an alk spike causing a major wipeout
Salinity is spot on
What lighting is over the tank? 6 x 54w T5s and 2 x 150w MH
Pumps and equipment 2 x Sun sun Vibration pumps 15000lph
2 X Resun Wavemakers 10000lph
with only 2 switched on at variable intervals
Maintenance 4 x 25l drums 3 times a month for the last 2 months but previously 4 x 25l every month
Have had this issue progressivley over the last 1.5 years or so ...and have done a full light change of all tubes 8 months ago with 2 brand new MH as well 3 weeks ago
Other info and photo's. Green ish colouration on water looks worse from the side panes as it does from straight on ......
Green colour persists even with all the lights off and blue moonlights on.
It was very sublte at first but over the last year has been very dominant....i have always dismissed it thinking it had to do with params or maybe not enough water changes but when i had a mishap this year and practically restarted the tank again doing a 400l water change the colour did change then back to green ish after 1 week.

Hi I heard that instead of buying T5 tubes from the pet store you can buy osram tubes. Does anyone know what specific tubes we can use that osram makes?
-
Well firstly I have three blue Chromis in my tank. Two smaller ones and then one which is almost 50% bigger than the other two. The big one looks as if he / she is protecting white spots attached to some LR and Coral in the tank.
Are the Chromis common spawners and what are the chances of the babies hatching?
I have heard somewhere that this sort of behavior is a good sign of the state of ones tank :whistling:

Hi guys just a quick one i need to cut a 40mm hole in my tank for an overflow but do you buy a 40mm dimond hole saw or a 37mm and also where would be the best place to buy a hole saw from ..

With all the hype going on with RGB (red, green, blue) LED combinations, I wanted to take a moment and explain some of the mythology associated with this approach. I know we are all fascinated by a potential magic bullit.
First, we need to understand what light is and what light LEDs produce. Most of us know that visible light is but a splinter of the electromagnetic spectrum, which includes wavelengths such as infra red (heat) to gamma radiation (destroys living tissues). LEDs are a technology that can produce very specific radiation wavelengths. We are familiar with the current favourites such as Royal Blue (450nm), Blue (470nm) and Cool White (a phosphor LED with a mixed spectrum peaking elatively low in the yellow-green and high in the royal blue). These are all within the photosynthetic spectrum, often called PAR (photosynthetic active radiation). This is essentially visible light. Depending on the organism, various parts of this spectrum are utilized for their photosynthesis. This is an evolutionary adaptation which allow the organism to thrive in its given environments. Needless to say, the actual parts of the PAR spectrum utilized can vary greatly. Land plants utilize most of the red to far red spectrum, as well as the blue to UV spectrum. Sea plants, such as zooxanthellate alga, use mainly the blue spectrum, as this is most abundant in shallow seas. The red is simply filtered out in the first few meters of water and thus not available for photosynthesis.
Now, this demarcates the area of useful radiations for any given environment, which we often refer to as PUR (photosynthetic utilized radiation). For our marine aquariums, this embraces the spectrum from about 530nm down to 380nm, of which most of the PUR is between 400nm-500nm with strong peaks at about 410nm and 450nm, give or take a little. This makes radiations outside of this spectrum less interesting for our corals and most other creatures found on the average reef, which is typically 10m deep or more (the exception being tidal reef tops, of course).
Now, with this base information in mind, let us look at RGB lighting. We can simply say we have radiations at 470nm (blue), 530nm (green) and 630nm (red) from the get go. Of these, the blue is the most usefull for corals, although it peaks a bit high. Many animals do use this spectrum and it does enhance many fluorescent pigments. A definite win for the aquarium. The green radiation comes on the border of usefull radiation. For photosynthesis, it is largely useless, but for the production of certain pigments or at least their fluorescence, it is usefull. On the other side of the coin, it starts the range of cynanobacteria PUR, which then runs up into the yellow. It is a radiation to enjoy in smaller amounts and with some caveats. Now, the red, at 630nm, is at the start of the classic land PUR for very shallow water life forms. It will encourage certain alga, but, interestingly enough, will actually restrict the populations of zooxanthellae in a coral! (this may be guild related). An interesting quality. In very large amounts, it could potnetially damage or even kill a coral via bleaching, while in controlled amounts will aid in modeling the colour of corals via this zooxanthellae restriction. It is an area that needs to be better researched.
OK, this alls sounds fascinating, but what about all the cool colour blends one can create with an RGB set-up? Yes, with these colours one can visually mix any given colour (within reason, as colour is a bit more complex) for their aquarium. Our eyes will be quite happy with the results. However, to attain the humanly aesthetic results, we are tricking ourselves into believeing that our corals are getting what we see. Let me explain.
Our eyes will mix received radiation and create colours that are radiation-wise not there. For a simple example, a combination of red and blue light will appear violet to our eyes. This is not violet radiation! If we analyze the spectrum, we will find that it is still a combination of 450nm and 630nm, not a true violet at 420nm! The same is true for any visual colour effect mixed via this method. It is the same thing we see in printed materia, where we are using cyan, yellow and magenta with black to create the entire rainbow. Our eyes are tricking us into see what we have lead them to see. Actually, a very cool thing, as, without this, colour printing would be close to impossible. Many will remember from school tha the cones in our eyes detect specific groups of radiation with preference, creating wehat we call trichomatic vision. The cone receptors of our retina interpret blue-violet, green and yellow-orange (red) wavelengths into the complete rainbow or possible colours. Of course, our corals do not see the world through our eyes and, with a RGB spectrum are missing much of the vital radiation they need to fill their PUR spectrum. The bottom line is: if the radiations are not produced by the light source, it is simply not there! Regarless of what our eyes are trying to relate to us.
This is not to say that RGB is a bad thing, simply that one must understand what one actually has. As a supplement to a good PUR spectrum, it does allow the aquarist more scope in mixing the aesthetic. It does not substitute for missing parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.
If you have questions, do ask. Many of the obvious questions can be better answered with a Google search, where you will find in-depth discussions of human vision and the visible spectrum, as well as PUR and PAR.

Hi all
I know I have been absent for about a year. I will post everything in the new tank thread i will start soon.
For now, I need some advice.... is it possible to use aluminum on a Marine Tank? I am busy trying out different designs for a light hood, but I am trying to come up with a plan to have a hood suspended over the tank, so as to have an "open" tank system. If it turns out aluminum can be used then I will post design ideas, otherwise it is back to the drawing board.
Thanks very much!! Any and all advice is welcomed :)

So whats your sump look like, share ideas of whats worked for you, pics of whats lurking down there.
What mechanical or chemical filtration your running, did i mention we need pics.
biological filtration, sandbeds, cheato and um pics...
We have dedicated threads for skimers and this reactor and that type of algae, but i cant find any dedicated threads to what holds it all together, The sump......
Oh and yes pics pics pics.

Hi all i want to sell or swap my circular marine tank fully equipt just over 500L of so with sump tank is 80x87 and cab is also around 80x87 its a glass tank.

Hey all,
After far too many questions on other people's threads I've decided to create my own thread with my own questions and planning ideas hoping that you guys can offer as much of your experience and suggestions as possible.
The tank was previously a bathwater tank that had a full house of 30 or so large (15-20cm) cichlids. And then in September 2010 my fiance and I went to Thailand where we did some snorkelling - that as they say was that - we were hooked. I got a Boyu TL-550 for that Christmas and it's been a smooth ride (touch wood) so far.
I took out the entire bottom shelving section and replaced it with steel bracing - bought the Steel rods and got someone to weld it together for R1200. It was welded pretty darn well and then I coated it with Hammerite. Word to the wise, WEAR GLOVES! when you're working with Hammerite. I tried to clean the brushes after painting and I could not get the stuff off because it's silicone based. My black hands weren't popular at work........
The stand :
DT Specs :
DT :
1500mm (l) x 500mm (w) x 600mm (h) with I think somewhere around 12mm - 15mm glass (Can't be too sure because it's got bracing on top that covers the glass that hides the thickness).
Haven't drilled the overflow yet - hoping to keep this for last having not done any glass drilling before so I'm kak'ing myself thinking about doing it. Still have to decide on what/where to put it - loving the look of Leslie Hempel's overflow though so I might lean towards doing something close to his.
Total DT volume is 450L.
Lighting :
Still deciding between the Vertex Illumilux Range and the Aquabeam 1500 XG Ultima.
The Aquabeam 1500 XG Ultima Range -
I'll be getting 2 of the
Aquabeam 1500 XG Ultima Reef White and 3 of the
Aquabeam 1500 XG Ultima Aqua Blue LED sets.
These I'll probably be getting from the same Reefstore - I've got family to purchase it who will post it off to me. Working it out purchasing it from them will cost R12 180 excl. postage and customs. The same thing in SA will cost me around R18 000 excl. postage to Durban. I'll have to see what's cheaper in the long run between the two.
I'll probably settle on the Aquabeam range purely because the Vertex Illumilux range doesn't have a 1500mm long option :(
Sump Specs :
Hardware :
Reef Octopus OCTX-160 with a 2500L/H pump.
Reef Octopus BR-110 NP Reactor with a 2500L/H Syncra Silent 2.5 pump.
Return pump will be a 5000L/H Syncra Silent 5.0 (suggested by Marco, The Waterboy)
Sump Size :
Have a look at the below sketch. I'm getting the glass on Monday for R450 ex. vat - I'll be gluing it as soon as I get it.
I'm still getting everything together so the next thing will be to get the return pump, the piping and the drill bit/knowledge to drill the tank then I have to get the LR - so if anybody is willing to sell me about 50KGs in the next month or two it would be appreciated.
I'll be dosing vodka daily along with various other additives - wanting to keep softies, SPS and LPS. Still researching on the additives so I'll get back to you on that.
Thanks everyone for the all the help so far and I'm hoping to be a member of MASA for a very long time coming.. loads of questions to come I promise :tt2:.
Cheers.
PS. I do have a decent camera so you'll be expecting more pics soon!

I tend to be biased towards snails I don't know, but decided to only move this one to a container in my nano.
It is about 5mm, brightly stripy colours.
What is it?
Do I keep it or take it out?

Moved the thread from my tank thread...
In the last month that I have been away, lots of stuff has started coming out of the LR. May also have been help by the more than normal feeding routine of my caretakers.
Going to post a few picks of the stuff, would appreciate IDs and views on if I should take action or be happy.
1st, is a red algae, large leaved, nearly paper-like structure. Growing slowly but constantly. Kinda pretty.
2nd, on the same piece of rock, a green spaghetti like algae. Growing very, very slow and has gone back since I started managing the tank again. The reddish hue is still from a bit of cyno. Looks wormlike.

Howsit guys,
Been quiet lately cause I've been busy juggling varsity and my new side project; A 1.2m I bought from a good friend and MASA member, Brettb2020:thumbup:
I'm still in the process of getting the tank going, but I have been taking photo's along the way. When I'm done, I'll post them up in a new tank thread.
In the mean time, I need to sort out my lighting. I am going to do it DIY, but need a bit of input. At the moment I am looking at getting:
2 x 150w metal halides (10 000 - 14 000K)
4 x 54w T5's (Probably Actinics)
3 small moonlight LED's.
Looking at being able to keep LPS, SPS and maybe after a year or so, a nenni...
All comments and criticism welcome.
BTW, where is the best/cheapest place to get ballasts for all of this (in Durban)?

Hi
The sea in front of Camps Bay has turned red. Big areas is completely red and more "current" are turning red.
Is this what is referred to as red tide?
PS NO, it is not clouds reflecting, have checked.

Hi all,
I am a bit of a retard when it comes to calibration and stuff so need some help with my profilux. Trying to set it up and reading the instructions around calibration, has anyone done this? Can you do this through the web interface or do you have to use the menu on the little LCD screen. Got the profilux III with the temp, ph and conductivity sensors. Just need some guidance please.

hi all,
over the past month iv had 3 fish disappear, two chromis and a convict tang. iv looked around in the tank and there isnt any trace of them. what could it be thats eating them?

Hey there all .... In light of my predator tank looking a little bare was thinking of adding a zoa garden with a few sprouts of xenia inbetween .... Theres only the 2 lions in there so anyone see a problem with these corals and lions ... Was looking at these two corals as the lighting wont be very demanding and I wont have to be putting my hands in there too often ... Just let grow like weeds ......

In the interest of educating the public, I thought it might be fun if we all shared our worst livestock choices and how we learned from them.
I'll go first...
In one of my first marine aquariums (this was about 8 years ago), I put a small horseshoe crab... yes, that's right, a horseshoe crab. It gets better. It was a 10g aquarium with an orange "ball" sea sponge and a false percula clown fish.
The LFS worker told me that it wouldn't outgrow the tank, and that "like a goldfish" they stay small if you keep them in a small aquarium.
Lesson learned: You can't bonsai a horseshoe crab.
-
Hi all,
I would like an ID on the "white" "tube" like thinghousingcreature on my live rock. I love all living things but this "thing" seems to be releasing spider web type webs into the tank and it dirties the water and floats all over the place if you can see the pic with the clams below you can see there is constantly webs hanging off the clams that this things releases.
Now I don't like killing things but I have no idea what it is and its really making a mess.
Anyone want to guess? Best pics I can get with Cell Cam.
-
The other day I came home to find a large slime coated layer of small round red eggs covering a rock of pollyps. The current pulled pieces off which was blown around the tank. Non of the fish seemed to pay it any notice. Who could have laid these eggs? Looking at the volume it could only be a few possibilities
Yellow tang & regal tang - not likely?
Clown - probably not as it is not all that large (2 years old)
3 chromis
strawbery dottyback - constantly looks 'pregnant'
I also have a sea hare but seems very unlikely due to the precise egg placement amoung the feathery pollyps.
Any thoughts as to who's playing house?
-
hey peeps

I have acquired another small colony (not sure if this is the correct word?) of Balstomussa Wellsi.
The ideal spot for it is on a vertical section of LR a few cm below another colony that is already in the tank.
As they are they same specie (just different colour) I am assuming that they will not attack each-other or should I keep them apart?
What will happen if the grow "into" each-other?

Hi all i have gone the sps route in my tank. I am currently dosing calcium via my kalkstirrer and these ate my water parameters
Alk 10
Calcium 500
Mg 1290
Now the question i have bought a doser( i know and impulse buy) now do i use that in conjunction with kalk stirrer or do i chuck one of them?
Your thoughts on this?

So I have a profilux but it's sitting in my study for now...
What I do have as well is a Refractometer, but I can't seem to get the dam thing set properly.
If I use some RO water and test it then it reads "0" which is right. However the other day when I was at Idol I ***THINK*** it was Rob that told me not to use RO water but to use proper salt water at 1025 and set it that way. He gave me a sample a while ago of perfect 1025 water and I set the Refractometer to that.
When I test my water at Temp 25.5 I get 1023 / 1022. I use Rob's sample that he gave me (I stored it at room temp sample is about a two months old, kept in a cool dark place in a plastic bottle) - I get 1023 on his sample (which is suppose to be 1025).
So I take my Refractometer and again test RO water and get a reading of 0.
How do you guys set your Refractometers ? I would like to know so I an get this once and for all set. The make of the Refractometer is a Reef Octopus.
Thank you

Hey guys.
So i receantly bought two frag tanks from a fellow reefer, and now im stumped!
Its 2 120x40x29 tanks, both drilled on a stand.
Now first off , what filtration would you guys advise i use?
Was thinking of going bare bottom on both tanks. Maybe use the one tank as a sump ie all LR and skimmer. Maybe some carbon. Or use a differnt tank as a sump for both frag tanks.
Then use the the top tank for fragging/grow out/holding tank.
Would it be a good idea to keep some fish in there eg so chromises or damsels for the biological side? And if yes, what fish as both tanks are going to be open top.So no jumpers please:lol:
Then lighting wise i was thinking of just T5's.
I intend to start with just softies and lps. And later on move over to sps.
And i will be setting up my other new setup in the next 3 months, and thought that i can use the frag tanks as a holding tank for the corals destind for the new setup.
Your thoughts and input please.

howzit guys..

Hi All. I have noticed lately that my Foxface turns completly white for a hour or so and then turn back to his normal yellow and later in the day he will be completly white again. He is eating and behaving normally but for some reason he keeps changing from white to yellow. I am not talking about when he sleeps and puts his striped pajamas on, i mean during daylight while he is swimming around. Has anyone seen this before?

I think I realy need help
Everything seemed to be going very well THEN!!!!!!!!!!!!
I re-did the aquascape with some Caribsea South Seas Rock and I used a product called WEICON Flex 310M (it has NO silicone or isocynate and is a adhesive used in tank manufactureing and Ventilation ssystems.) to glue everything together I let it cure for a week.
I aquascaped on the Saturday and then I did a 500 l water change with
NSW from the aquarium.on the Sunday. On Monday my pulseing Xenia were DEAD on Tuesday my leather was dead on Thursday my Urchin started moulting. I tested my water and everything was OK except that Nitrates had climbed to 10ppm On the Saturday I mixed 200 liters of sea water using
RO water and Nitrates did drop down to 5ppm and now it is Thursday and all my snails are lying upside down. WHAT THE @#$% is going on??????????
Fish are all eating and look realy good no strange behaviour RBTA looks a bit pale but I can not understand what I need to do to sort things out because everything seems fine.
Parameters
KH =8.8dKH
NH=>0.25
NO3=5ppm
NO2=0ppm
PO4= 0
SG=1025
CA=410
MG=1275ppm

Hi
I am new to MAS. Just join today. I've got (for 8 months) an 8-sided tank, about 1.5 m deep. 2 clowns, a coral beauty, yellow tan, 2 starfish, a sea cucumber, carpet anemone, oridinary anemone, and a soft coral. My two tuxcedo urchins died. One got stuck in the outlet, and the other seemed having a fight with the anemone.

Hi
I have a Cascade 300 hang on filter which i have no use for and I'd like to know if chemical media (GFO's) can be used in these or even carbon. I will replace the cartriges with either Carbon or GFO and mod it so that the media cannot escape back into the sump. Could this perform as a reactor as i understand reactors basically extend the contact time with the media and prevent grinding by carefull waterflow to prolong its lifespan and to prevent "dust" from entering the system.
If the throughflow is too much and causes the media to boil, could i not just pack more media into the canister or is there a recomended amount of media to add per litre in your system?
Could i put a prefilter on the intake to reduce the waterflow or somehow reduce the intake, (the filter currently has a throughflow reducer).
What is the flow rate through a reactor?
Will this become a nitrite factory?
Is my line of thought correct?

Hi, I am very new to all this and still pretty confused. I have taken over my son's 5 year old tank and a new algae is growing. Hey everyone .... So I been monitoring my clams for the past few days, an they seem a bit retracted, I checked everything and all was fine.... Lasnight while prepping their food, I caught my cleaner in action, peckin on both my clams, can that be the reason for retracting? .... Also, I never seen him clean a fish since I have him, when they approach him, he swims away, could it be he is a false cleaner? Also he is a feisty mysis and brine shrimp eater.... Help please, its impossible to catch him out of tank, what to do, what to do

Well as the name suggests, I've been considering setting up a Blackberry Group for some time now. Anyone who doesn't have a BlackBerry but would like to to be notified of events are welcome to join too, if you're willing to exchange numbers on "Whatsapp"
The idea is to get some feedback first, before doing anything but I'm thinking it should have the following criteria:
1) No BRAND NEW newbs. So at least 100 posts.
2) This will not be an advice based group. MASA is to be strictly used for that. It will be a purely imformational, networking-based, social group - so if you wanted to get together for a dive, collecting, tank visit, braai hosting, or even just a beer then you'd send a message.
What other criteria?
Is it a good idea?
How many Durban members would be interested?

What product should i get for killing worms living in my newly collected zoas, and where can i get it?

No this isn't a new idea at all, but I thought that I'd share this with all of you. I found this little fridge and what I think sets it apart is the fact that it also runs off of battery power. Meaning that if you had a battery powered pump, then you could effectively also keep your tank cool if there was no electricity for a while. I'm sure that the electrical geniuses will be able to shed some more light on anything I'm missing.
Other Travel - Desk Fridge for sale in Cape Town (ID:46941533)
Essentially the idea is to have the following:
-Bar fridge
-long plastic pipe
-pump
-thermostat (if you're not at home to keep an eye on things)
You would place the pump with thermostat switch, in your sump, attached to one end of the pipe. You would drill an entrance hole in the side of the fridge for the pipe to go into and create many coils in the fridge with the pipe and drill another hole for the pipe to exit back out, into your sump. Simple as that. Hope you like the idea.

Hi,
Need urgent assistance/advise.
My tank has taken a nose dive in the last week. It started with my torch coral that died in one day and pulsing xenias not doing so well and they are shrinking. I have just seen my urchin looks like it died this morning. Left him just in case he was just resting will check tonight when I get home. All the fish are okay and looks healthy. The protein skimmer is just producing white foam. It is a TS2. It normally take about 5 days to but the last week I have had to empty it every second day now.
It gives off the usual green sludge but with white foam on it.
It is also full of Cyno
My tank is about 640 Lt including sump.
My water temp is a bit high at 27.5 c
Ammonia = 0.01
Nitrite = 0.00
Nitrate = 50 ppm
Phosphate = above 5ppm
Alk = 2.83
dHK = 8.7
PH = 8.5
salinity = 1.024
I have been dosing stability, seachem 8.4 , seachem alpha. I also have seachem phosguard pellets as well charcoal running in the tank.
Just can't figure out what went wrong and how to fix this. I have recently done a 200lt water change. that did nothing for the tank

Yeah....as the title says. During feeding this morning, Morris just chilled in his corner, he usually dashes for the mussel but not this morning, even after adding the other frozen food he showed no interest at all.
So I sat around the tank for about 15mins studying him the noticed that his butt was...... hmmmmmm.... how can I best describe this...? Looked like a bottle necked road block! I could see the k@k but it wasn't coming out!!:P it (his bung hol) was probably stretched to about 4-6mm:eek:
Should I intervene or let nature take its course?

Hi guys
How difficuilt are dwarf seahorses to keep?
What's the minimum sized tank I can use?
Are normal salinities fine for them?
How long do they live?
This is what I know so far and I want to learn more before taking the plunge, so any thoughts and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
I know they dont like flow and need something to cling onto like macroalgae or artificial "plants". They only eat newly hatched brineshrimp as the food is small enough. No mechanical filtration is needed as you want to keep the brine shrimp circulating in the tank for them to feed the all the time. I will however do water changes with my main display daily to keep nutrients down. Lighting is not important but they do need a day night cycle. No other corals, aiptasia, hydroids or majano in the tank as these can sting and kill them. Three or four of them can be kept in the tank.
Is there anything I have left out?

Please say a prayer for my brother Bob. He has been fighting throat cancer for a year. He's had a bone removed from his leg to replace the decaying bone in his face. He's also had major skin graphing done. The first surgery failed, and he will now undergo a second surgery tomorrow. His face is completely deformed to the point that it scares people. He is my brother, and afraid to face the public. I can't imagine what this is like. The few words that he is able to say, he says this is no life to live. I can't imagine life without him. All prayers are greately appreciated!

Hi There Reefers and Marine maniacs....
Wow, what a find (refering to MASA), I have read and learned a huge volume of valuble information so far and i will continue study the many MASA posts to learn further.
I am hoping to get started in this mental hobby by years end and look forward to sharing my journey with you all. :1:
I am planning a large volume tank , around 500L -600 L dislpay volume. Not sure what volume sump I should use. My ideal would be on a 90cm high display stand, Tank: 160cm L X 55 cm D X 75cm H. ( getting a quote this week on this custom build )...... Not brave enough to go DIY.
I will definately be asking advise on equipment before I rush out and spend the G's

Hi,
I have just built about a 1000 liter pond (cold water). And currently I have several koi fish and gold fish, a few water plants and a couple of snails enjoying their new habitat.
I am totally new to this and if anyone can help with the following it will be greatly appreciated.
1. Are there filters available that remove chlorine from tap water? (I would like to install a ball valve to automatically top up my pond, but I need to get the chlorine out to do that).
2. What species (other than koi or goldfish) can survive in an outdoor cold water pond?
I was hoping to get some leads on:
a) Different kinds of snails
b) Shrimp (are there any fresh water shrimp that is legally allowed)?
c) Fresh water clams
d) Fresh water crabs?
e) Any bottom feeders?
(I am looking for a cleaning crew!)
Thanks!
-
Are anyone familiar with these?
I wired them up, but the don't turn off completely....
I've got them on my Lighting fixtures. The lights turn off but not the fans in the fixtures.
Am I doing something wrong? Is my wiring messed up?

Hi, I am thinking of putting TWO Sicce yoyager powerheads with a Wave Surfer controller on my new tank.
The tank is 1200x600x500 (LxWxH)
I see that they have three differnent strenghts i.e.
800 GPH
1200 GPH
1600 GPH
I believe that Sicce is good, what are your thoughts also which strenght should I put in to create the right flow in the tank to handle SPS eventually.
I assume that you would put one on each side of the tank.
Thanks experts for your comments.

Darn it. Got up this morning and the airline to the skimmer had come off. The whole tank was flooded with microbubbles. Came home this evening, and the clam was dead. Testing water now. Could the bubbles have killed the clam?

So...
Other setup is getting to small for me, so I want a bigger setup.
This is what I custom ordered from @
xtreme (thanx!!)
It is 3 side viewable 1220L x 800W x 600H (W/L at 550 and overflow at one side of the 800) It is much bigger the I first thought :whistling:
Now the question for you guys.
I want to prepare the tank for the future. Want to add two mp40's on the 800 side with the overflow. Now the thing is I do not know what overflow would work the best for this situation.
My plans for the tank is a reef with alot of small schooling fish, maybe a tang or two and alot of corals.
This is as far as I have planned:blush:
Any advice?

Idol Marine has been working on something new.
We will very soon be offering evaporative coolers. (Yes, Yes, it is not a completely new idea. But we will be offering coolers in South Africa at great prices.)
So what is this new fangelled thing we're talking about?:P
Well its a system that uses water and air in an optimised way to cool your water through evaporation.
It also won't require huge adaptations to existing systems to install. Just bypass a little water from your uplift, or plumb a small pump into the cooler, that can sit ontop of your sump, or outside the sump enclosure.
The major beauty of these coolers is that besides costing a lot less than Chillers, they will also run on massively less power.
A 1000l tank that might usually use a 1000w chiller could get away with 10watts of cooler power.
That's a massive difference in these days of huge ESKOM bills.:thumbup::thumbup:

Hi All!
This is one of the 2 threads i am going to start about my journeys into Zeovit, thanks for the idea Leslie.
Since starting in '92 i have mostly stuck to the Berlin Method and had great success, but i have decided to try a well established "Snake Oil" and post findings for those interested in going this route.
I have always had a fascination for the biology behind keeping fish, being salt or fresh and decided many years ago i would keep this a hobby and passion instead of a job, sometime i think i was wrong but will see where time and the future takes us.
While the science is pretty easy behind it, i hope to bring some real SA exprience of it to the forums and advise where i can, and issues i cant help with in the beginning i have some fellow reefers who can assist.
so here i start
"Some believe the results but believe the system is just much too complicated and too expensive", i hope to change this and show a detailed practical, real-life scenario, i even got a camera for this :P, so remember this is a work in progress...
This is in no way meant to explain scientifically how the system works, in the beginning anyway or convert you to the ZeoVit way or knock DSB's etc, i am going to explain and expand on the Zeo Guide in laymen's terms what the system is about for those that are interested in knowing about ZeoVit, and getting a nice Zeovit community going here at MASA.
I wanted to find out more about zeovit since I was already using NeoZeo from Brightwell and experimenting in Amino Acids. So while searching the internet and forums I found very mixed results, the scientific community seem to frown on the system, primiarly because the designer, Thomas Pohl, would not release the ingredients of what is in the additives. I thought in the beginning this would be bad, but logic convinced me the proof is in trying and as a hobbiest how would knowing the ingredients help me????
So while the results can be achieved through various other methods, i chose to explore this avenue as there was very little margin for error. Having said this, your system is not running on a knifes edge and i hope to experience this :)
so lets comment and chat and debate about this and at the end of it, i will convert this to an article
some reading
What Does ZeoVit Do?
Zeovit is not a one-size fits all system, since every system is different and has different needs, the dosage and products used of zeovit will vary from one tank to another. Although itss a very precise system, you will get your best results by watching your corals and letting them tell you what is needed.
The purpose of the ZEOvit system is to easily and reliably create, and maintain, a poor nutrient environment or Low Nutrient System (LNS) in the reef tank similar to the natural reef environment. The goal is to reduce nutrients like nitrate and phosphate without lowering the levels of important minerals, like calcium and magnesium, and carbonate hardness.
In order for the ZEOvit method to be successful, a few fundamental husbandry techniques and equipment components must also be included in your design and operation. These are strong and efficient skimming, lighting sufficient for the intended corals and livestock, regular weekly water changes, addition of elements at low levels, controlled addition of nutrients to create stabile water parameters (Ca, Mg, KH, Salinity).
The five basic components are:
1. A Balanced Mix of zeolites (ZEOvit).
2. A Microorganism Solution (ZEObak).
3. A combination of Bacteria and Coral Food (ZEOfood)
4. Bacteria Food (ZEOstart)
5. Constant Filtration with Activated Carbon
The reduction of nutrients and the establishment of a poor nutrient system results from the interaction between ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, and the zeolite filter media (ZEOvit). The three different zeolites of the media were chosen because of their ability to reduce certain toxins in a balanced manner. It is important to "clean" the ZEOvit filter media daily to maintain optimum performance.
The interaction between ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, and the zeolite filter media (ZEOvit) produces a "mulm". The "mulm", released from the ZEOvit material, contains bacteria that is used as food by the corals. This is very important because it provides nutrients to the animals, and has a very positive impact on the colors, polyp extension and vitality of the corals. Large Polyped Corals (LPS) react with fully expanded tissue.
THIS IS NOT ONLY A SYSTEM FOR SPS!
Certain elements are adsorbed as well, and require replacement to counteract depletion.
The ZEOvit method can be successfully used with bare-bottom (BB), shallow sand bed (SSB), deep sand bed (DSB), and Berlin-style system designs. The use of live rock (LR) is not required. UV sterilizers, ozonizers, and nutrient exporting macroalgae are not compatible with the ZEOvit method.

Hi
Please could someone advise as to how skimmers are rated?
Also, its been advised that one should go for a skimmer rated at twice the volume of the tank capacity, should one then get a 1000 lt rating for a 500lt system?
Can one overskim a tank, for example get a skimmer at say 5 times the tanks capacity, will there be any ill effects, i.e removing trace elements and supplements?
I assume skimming is based on bio load so hence a skimmers capacity should be weighed against the bioload you wish to keep, so one could overskim if the bioload is minimal based on the skimmers capacity?

Hi. New to your site, but where better to go when you share a common interest. I have fresh-water aquarium snails that are laying eggs - every single day. And now the little-ones have made their presence felt. They are too cute. But I need to sell them, or be overtaken by snails. Is there possibly an interested party (in Pretoria) willing to buy them from me? Trust me, I think I will be able to supply for the rest of time!!

Hi all,
I have an old tank of mine back and i am thinking of doing a marine tank. The problem is that i have not worked with fish for 8 years and this will be my first marine tank, as i only had fresh water tanks previously. So the question is "what do i need" and what do i need to research first? The tank is 228 litres (100cm x 60cm x 48cm).
Hope to hear from you soon, thanks alot.
Pitte.

My Clarkii has some peculiar brown stuff near his gill plate/face area on his left fin side.
It has been swimming in an unusual manner over the past two days, swimming in the current quiet a lot.(like in front of the flow pump)
It also hasn't been behaving like the boss of the tank.
Any clues?

Got a 6 spot goby on Saturday, did a 2 hour drip. temp and salinity was a match and added to my DT.
I could see the guy was stressed out and not happy about all the transport, considering its a new shipment that came in on Friday.
Anyway, he didn't make it :( :( :( but before I could get the body one of my cleaner shrimp ran off with it behind the rock work.
Now, to get to him will be hard, I'll need to remove ALLOT of rock and corals to get to the body, stressing all the fish in the process.
My system is 600L and I skim wet. Can I get away with a few water changes or will I be rescaping my tank tonight?

I have decided to remove my DSB and move to either NeoZeo, Neovit or NP Pellets.
My system isn't that big, around 200L's with the display being 140L. I'm in the process of moving house and had to move my sump, needless to say with the DSB this is a bit of a pain. I am also very limited with space in my sump and think my DSB is probably not big enough to give maximum benifit.
Which of the above methods would be best to replace my DSB and ATS?

So I have had this little tank (8 litre) running for just under 3 months now and have not worked on it much since I chucked Bojangles, my hitchhiker crab, into it. Now while my nano is busy sorting out its phosphate issues, I am keen to do something with this tank but need a little inspiration, some info on equipment that I may need and if it is feasible to do some sort of mod on it.
Now from the time I started it up till now the tank looks the same:
Firstly, I don't like that skimmer. I have had endless problems with it and now want to chuck it out. Is there anyone that can recommend a good skimmer for a pico and where to get it? Or a DIY?
Secondly, I need some inspiration for the rock scaping. I think there is some beauty in negative spaces so I don't want the back of the tank to be filled with rock. Does anyone have any nice ideas for aquascaping a tiny tank?
Thirdly, stocking the tank. I'm am going to only have coral in it. Not going to stress a fish out with such a tiny environment. I would like to put a flame shrimp or something similar in but I don't know if the tank will be big enough for them. I would also like a little starfish and maybe a tubeworm but now I am treading on some dangerous waters as I know that this may be overstocking this size tank. So any advice in this regards is highly appreciated!
Lastly (for now), filtration. I have purigen, chaeto and rowa phos remover. Is there anything else that I should consider or have left out?
Is there any other recommendations that you guys have to offer?
Sorry for the lack of pics, promise to post more after a few changes have been made

Hi,
Im planning on doing a c2c overflow on the rear glass of my new build.
Id like to know if an external duso is possible
My idea is to use a 32mm bulkhead/tank connector with a treaded T piece on the outside. The top of the T will be plumbed so the pipe is above the water line and fitted with an end cap, however instead of playing around with hole sizes i intend drilling a hole the size of the std airline and putting on a tap or plumb the tap diectly to the end cap to play with the air intake, similar to what Riaan did with the sewer vent valve.
My question is will this silence it or will I have to plumb an elbow on the inside of the overflow as this is what is done on the durso.

Having read thru the forum post and the sticky threads i see some conflicting info wich i need clarity on before going either root.
As i understand a dsb is an area of sugarfine sand between 10 to 15cm with lamina flow for optimal performance.
It is also mentioned that too deep can have negative impacts with sulphur etc.
Wanting to design my system to the best possible way i have a few questions.
1) With the RDSB shown on one of the threads it appears that a 20-25lt bucket is used which is filled almot to the top, will this setup not cause the same problem as with a too deep sand bed? or has it been established that a too deep sand bed will not cause promlems?
2) in the second compartment of the sump assuming my dsb is 12cm position a strip off class like a brace about 20cm from the bottom (i.e 8cm above sand) on wich a piece of eggcrate is positioned to place live rock, will this restrict flow and cause detritus to collect on the sand bed, could i mitigate this by using a filter sock on the tank overflow into the skimmer chamber of filter floss in the overflow chamber of the tank that will be replaced often, or is it advisable not to place LR in DSB chamber.
2) assuming i go the rdsb could i use a custom 4ft tank or big jim plastic box plumbed above the sump such that the overflow is gravity fed back into the sump but not directly fed by the DT, the dsb will be fed from the sump via a pump. my question is were do i pull water from the sump below and were will it flow to 1) the skimmer compartment and flow back to skimmer compartment or from LR in sump compartment and directly back to the return pump compartment or from return pump comartment bach to return pump compartment.
Reason is i want to get as little detritus to settle in the dsb area as possible.

Looking for some Ecotech Mp40 sponge guards.
Does anyone stock them?
-
Hi Guys,
Im new here. I currently have a sps tank using 8 x T5. I am busy having a house built and ofcourse, new house, new tank. Only thing I still need to decide on is my lighting. I want to get LED's. Tank dimensions are 130L x 70W x 50H.
I have been looking at 2 x Maxpect 160w, mailed fishstreet and they said the lights give problems and they are out of stock and that I should look at Key. Search on google, guys oversease had problems with individual LED's blowing on the Key units and bad backup service.
Can anyone please help. My budget is around R11K. I want to get something decent if I spend that amount. This tank will be barebottom, full sps.
Looking forward to your reply's.

Went to maizeys to find out how much acrylic would cost and i almost fell over!
Oh, and on a side note - what glass thickness should I be looking at wrt building a sump?

Hello, TKD here.
I signed up some time back when i was getting going to get some info on what not to do. My system is now up and running for about 6 months and i have had only two problems. One was that everything was going well until i got a shipment of fish about two months back and a few days later i lost a fish a day, for 8 days! The weird thing is my water was completely free from any common problems. My inverts and corals didnt and still havent shown any signs of irretation or discomfort, in fact they are doing really well!
Only two clowns and my coral beauty servived the week long onslaught of death!
Any Ideas?
The 2cnd problem is of less impact but still a concern for me, I have two anemones, one radianthis and one bubble. the bubble has moved into and under my rockwork wich is supported by a plastic framework. it has been there for some time now, and there is not much light if any in there and i can only see a small part of it. It moves around under there but i am unable to feed it!
Any ideas?
Thanks for all the valuable info from everyone...

Hi @
Submariner
I am seriously considering going with Zeovit, but i have a queation
Will it be an easy changeover because I am currently using strong skimming and Bio pellets and when I go Zeovit, iwill have to take away the Bio Pellets as it is currently my only form of Phos/Nitrate reduction.
Please advise...
Thanks

OK so i have a million tabs open on my laptop right now trying to figure out the whole led lighting scenario and how it all mashes up.
In this
thread started by @mandarinman , @Submariner states that anything under 80 lumens per watt is not worth looking at, when you take that metal halide ranges from 65 to 115 lumens per watt, i agree with this statement.
Then you look at @fly* cube and he has the par38 bulb from
General lamp if this is the same that fly is using its total lumens are 1550 all cool white led, divide that by 12 ( the amount of led ) then divide by 3 ( the wattage of each diode ) then these units work out to 43.05557 lumens per watt, a bit low in the lumens acording to the above statement from Submariner, but they seem to be working fine for him. So with that in mind what is the general consensus with regards to LED and lumens per watt.
Then i found this on wiki
High-Brightness (HB) LEDs
The Cree XLamp XP-E is a white LED mounted on a 3.5 by 3.5 mm base with a maximum drive current of 700 mA and a wide viewing angle of 115 degrees. It is available in Cool White (87.4 - 114 lumens at 350 mA), Neutral White (80.6 - 100 lumens), and Warm White (67.2 - 87.4 lumens). The typical forward voltage drop is 3.2-3.4 volts.
[10]
All XLamp LED production units are sorted into a number of coded bins, based on color and brightness. Due to the power level and heat generated, adequate cooling is key to good usage of these parts.
[11]
The XLamp XR-E is a white, blue or green LED mounted on a 7 by 9 mm base with a maximum drive current of 700-1000 mA and a viewing angle of 90-100 degrees, rated for 50,000 hours. It is available in Cool White (80.6 - 107 lumens at 350 mA), Neutral White (62.0 - 93.9 lumens), and Warm White (56.8 - 80.6 lumens); Royal Blue (300 - 425 mW), Blue (23.5 - 30.6 lumens) and Green (67.2 lumens). The typical forward voltage drop is 3.3-3.7 volts.
[12][13]
Newer additions are XLamp MC-E
[14] which are basically 4 XR-Es (individually addressable) in one package, able to produce up to 370-430 lm together when driven at 4x350 mA.
[15]
More recently, Cree has released the X-Lamp XM-L Cool White LED. This LED emits 1000 lumens at just under 10 watts.
The company has received a contract to provide energy efficient LED lighting to Walmart for new stores and renovations in November 2009.[

I also found this on luminous efficiency also from wiki, might be a bit old tho
Luminous efficacy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The x range from cree seem to be the right diode for reef tanks, but what other diode's are available to us that fall in to the right lumens per watt category.

Hi guys thought id give some feed back on the sample of D and D reef paste i got from Nemo's Janitor
The paste is very mouldable and sticky , The biggest feeding response is shown from omnivorous grazing fish(Angels, Triggers, Tangs) , i think this is due to it's high krill content, I have been wanting a product like this too come along for years.
It is extremely useful for adding things to fish food and is designed primarily for fish that like to graze all day long , you can add medicine such as antibiotic and dewormers. Also one can easily add vitamins to it as well.
It easily sticks to the glass or rocks and slowly releases a fine cloud of food particles that Zooplankton feeders like Anthias,Clownfish will go for and which will feed invertebrates/ corals as well
Some of my tangs were reluctant to eat it at first like my Convict tang but it was easily remedied by adding nori to the paste that made it even more attractive as the shredded nori pieces looked like algae/seaweed stuck on a rock.
Because it is very much like sticky clay one could add just about any appetite stimulant or attractive food to it if a fish is hesitant to eat it, this would allow one to give a very balanced diet as well.Flake, pellets etc can also be mixed in it is great for combining things to the food.
I can definitely recommend this food but i would use it sparingly as with any food, it does also affect skimmer performance for a short while after adding it most likely due to the krill oil content.
There are some fish that may not eat it though like Sandsifting Gobies and the like.

I recently moved house(7th Oct). I paid well known chap to move my 260l tank for me. It was well worth it, no damage, no losses. However, my favourite poor nennie is just fading away, whilst everything else flourishes.
It's mint green with a pale pink base. It took a few days for it to settle into a spot. I have had it 3 years; I know that it was about 1 to 2 years old when I got it. It has a Maroon Clown "Tyson", who is being being rather rough with it trying to perk it up or something.
Since the move I have taken water samples regularly to more than one LFS(to check if the results are the same). All results are that everything is optimum. No problems.(my test kits are somewhere in the abyss of boxes from the move-I found some but decided to just go to the LFS instead of wasting time)
I have heard that nennies don't like being touched; so obviously the move etc would upset it for a few days, that was expected.
I have tried a variety of subtle differences in water current and temperature to try to stop it shrinking. It is eating, but its tenticles are pulling in towards its body and curling at the ends. It's looking a dirty shade in some areas. All the normal things just aren't working. I put a new bubble nennie in the tank about 6 weeks ago which after a week split and is doing really well(and so I have twins).
I am getting into a small panic; no visible damage and it is eating, but it is fading away. PLEASE any suggestions, I am at a loss.:(:(

I got a reef octopus reactor. The pellets keep on clogging the top mesh. I have to clean it every day. This is bad because the bacteria dies and the have to start again. Now i open the inlet pipe a little so that some pressure can be released there but now the water is splashing everywere. What can i do to fix this problem?:( The reactor is running for about two months now.

Guys, I need to pick your brains.
Which corals could be used best as nutrients exporter?
I can imagine xenia would be a good one.
What about rics?
What about star polyps?
Any other corals who suck nutrients out of the water?

Found this great Article on gonies if anyone is interested.
Feature Article: The Successful Aquarium Culture of Goniopora Species — Advanced Aquarist's Online Magazine
It identifies some of the different goni species and their requirements based on the experiences of the writer, he has a few different ones in his care.
I personally have a blueish purple one (4 days now) which is a bit more hardy than the yellow/green/brown ones from what I've read.
Does anyone else have one of these? And what are your conditions? Mine is till not opening up completely. About 2-3cm extension at the moment in a well lit moderate to highish flow area. Going to move him to a lower flow area tomorrow and see if it makes a difference.

I started my Marine Tank (900 l) in September 2010. I have purchased ALL my equipment and ongoing supplies from Dorry Pets in Centurion. This included a Profilux Controller.
Yesterday, the pump on my Reef Octopus Skimmer started tripping the power. I called Dorry Pets for a quotation on a replacement unit, and was quoted just under R 2,000 - (A new full unit currently sells for about R 3,200)
After further discussions with Lanzo, I discovered that the 12 month Warranty expires in 10 x days time.
I popped along to Dorry Pets to ask them to take a look at the unit. On my arrival, Lanzo greeted me as normal with a big smile, and handed a new Replacement Pump to me at NO CHARGE.
I cannot think of any reason why you would want to purchase your Marine or Fresh Water equipment, stock or supplies anywhere else other than at Dorry Pets in Centurion.
Lanzo, Dewald, and Jacques - Thank you for your ongoing Professional Service - It is an absolute pleasure doing business with you guys.
Regards
ATHOL :)

Does anyone know where I can buy a Blue Leg Hermit in Cape Town?
Which LFS has?
Thanks

My Ca and Ph has never been a problem always 8.2-8.4 with fuge light on reverse cycle. I drip Kalk every now and then when Ca goes under 420. So that's about 3 times a week.
Currently I'm struggling to keep a proper balance between these parameters.
My current readings:
Ph. 8.4 (Tropic Marin)
Alk 5-6 (Tropic Marin)
Ca 440 (Salifert)
Mg 1240 (Salifert) Sometimes drops more with Ca still high.
Should I bother to get Mg above 1300 and Alk to 7-8? If so, with what?
Currently dripping Brightwells Kalk+2 if that matters...
thanks

Salifert Coralline AminoAcids has arraived here with more info from their site

250ml - R190 (inc VAT)
500ml - R340 (inc VAT)
Coralline AminoAcids
Why are amino acids required?
The skeletal material of corals is built-up with alternating layers of calcium carbonate and layers rich in amino acids.
These amino acids fulfill many important functions. They stabilize the skeletal material avoiding the transformation into a totally different crystal structure, and they also decrease the negative effect of phosphate on coral growth.
Furthermore amino acids serve as a food for most corals and beneficial bacteria.
There is sufficient evidence that around coral reefs the desirable amino acids occur in the water itself and are deposited on freshly formed calcium carbonate. The type of amino acids in solution and their relative proportions show a remarkable similarity to the amino acids found in coral skeletons. Therefore it is very likely that corals obtain these amino acids from the surrounding waters.
These amino acids originate from the many different life forms on coral reefs. An aquarium system lacking the bio-diversity of a huge reef may suffer from a lack of the proper amino acids.
About Coralline AminoAcids
There is sufficient evidence for that some amino acids are highly essential while some amino acids have a negative impact on the stability and growth of corals.
Salifert's Coralline AminoAcids contains all the amino acids in correct proportions as found in coral skeletons.
We omit all amino acids which have a negative effect on the stability and growth of the coral skeleton.
Salifert is currently the only company offering such a well-defined formulation.
Coralline AminoAcids gives corals the opportunity to form a stable skeleton or skeletal needles. The negative effects of phosphate are also markedly decreased.
Also, all ingredients are of a pharmaceutical quality or even better. This ensures that no unwanted elements are added to your valuable aquarium.
Directions:
Shake before use.
Regular maintenance:
Dose 5 ml per 100 liters (25 gallons) once every week.
Keep out of reach of children. In case of contact with eyes rinse with plenty of water. Only for aquarium-hobby use. Not for human consumption (directly or indirectly)!
Active ingredients: amino acids and amino carbohydrates

Is this a flatworm in my fuge?
What's this brownish thing? It's on this frag plug and seems to be getting bigger. Saw one on a rock also.
Are these baby snails?
Is this red macroalgae or coral?
Seasquirts?
A blue sponge?
Is this fuzzy stuff on the side of this frag the polyps spreading?
This emerald green crab has algae and sponges growing on his legs. Is that a problem? Why doesn't he pick it off?
Has anyone had any luck getting these white polyps to transfer to another sponge or rock? The red sponge under it isn't doing well.

Hi everyone...
I want to start a dsb but lots of folks are telling me to do a lot of different things. Some people say I shouldn't make a dsb, but should just put some LR where the dsb should be?
Other people say I should go the dsb route but I shouldn't put LR directly onto the sand. They say I should build a stand out of eggcrate..
I'm highly confused. Should I go with the 1st or 2nd 1? If 2nd, why shouldn't I put LR directly onto the sand?
Many thanks
Oceans 22
-
Did you ever tell a non reffer friend or work college that you bought 20 of LR and tell them the price and then you look at there face they look at you like you are a mad man lol Strange things I do is I come home say hi to my wife put my bag on the floor and walk strait to my take every day with out fail makes my wife made . I always sit in the chairs closes to my tank so I can just turn a have a look I can spend hours just looking at live rock This is just a few of the strange thing I do

I had a call from a fellow reefer this morning and im puzzled..
he is experiencing a reading of .004 of phosphate with his meter (hanna) and upon testing the efflient of his phos reactor is getting a reading of .007
his NSW reading before use is .003..
why is the water exiting his reactor higher in a phos reading..
all that i can think of his perhaps the way he is adding his kalk? as i remember there was something to this to reduce phos.. or am i babling on here....
comments welcome..

Noticed on saturday my carpet anemone decided to clone himeself. the problem is that he is attached to a rock which my other anemone has its base bolted on. i wanted to move the small rock then saw the other has burrowed under the rock and attached himself to it. they are back to back.
what would be the best way to remove one that has split?

Hi all,
I'm looking for a host anemone for my clownfish pair. They should start laying eggs again, as I've got the rotifers and greenwater running nicely now.

Guys I need some help for a new project. I will be setting up a cube (roughly 800 sq) , I need to design a sump (would like the DSB ) but my issue is I need about 250 mm space for my monster skimmer.
That leaves very little space for DSB to be effective , any suggestions ?
-
Now we know how awesome corals look under black light but their affects differ from one forum to another.
What I could establish is that they are NOT harmful to corals givin you're using normal fluorescent tubes (36w etc/1200mm) etc. These have UV-B light levels which are a bit more intense than UV-A levels of actanics. (UV-C is sterilization grade) However some guys argue that the spectrum is much more visible to fish and invert eyes vs us humans, meaning it could blind them.
I've read some posts about aquariums using them as moon lights without ill effects. Personally I'm looking for a type of black light/uv/led torch so I can "spot view" some corals without exposing other LS to the light.
What are your thoughts on the use of black light in the marine world?

Hey guys, did some shopping around. Popped into Wild on Pets on saturday. They didnt have much to offer on the tank side of things, but their live stock is quite unreal. Shopped around some more. Found a Boyu TL 550 for a real good price and thinking of getting one of those. Good or bad?
And if I do go that route. Forgive me for asking if this has been asked a million times before. What will I need to just get it running. Water wise and so on. I'm in no rush to get live stock in there. I just want to get the water in, the system running and so on. I thought I had a fair idea on what to do here but each pet store has spun me a different story.
What salt? Crushed Coral? Any do's or don'ts for starting it off?

Peeps,
Need some advice:
I am moving house by end of this month and need to swop over my livestock from my 2 yrs old system(1.2m) to a new 2m build(my very first DIY) and no leaks:thumbup:
The 2m was only filled yesterday aftn and no leaks thus far so i started the cycle
with a peice of muscle to rot and added from my matured LR and some sand from my sandbed with a heater and one pump for flow.
Also i added Fauna marin Ultra Bak and ultra bio(been using this on my current setup with great success)
My issue is that i HAVE to move evrything out my old place by month end and need to speed this cycle up as fast as possible as i have about 11 fish to move over, the distance from my old place to new place is like 10metres(bought house next door, lol)
Other issue is i will only be siliconing the sump today or 2moro so my 2m is operating sumpless at the moment.
Also i wont be goin DSB anymore just be using either Fauna marin route or equivalent.
Will prodibio startup make my cause abit quicker?
What does the MASA members recommend i do?

Hi this has probably been asked ,but I want to add 5 blue green chromises to my aquarium which is 240l and has an occelaris and 2 allards. I want to now know if I can add 5 at once or if it would bomb the bio load too much and if I would be exceeding the amount of livestock one can have in such a sized tank.

Hi
I want to add a DSB to my existing 4 month aquarium. I have a big middle compartement wich just has a bit of live rock. Is it possible to add a DSB? How do I do it? and what are the risks?
Thanks in advance:)

Found this guy cruising in the DT after dark. Took him out and placed in the sump to get a better view and snap. Looks like a slug with white dots on his tentacles.

This question is for those who have a good answer with reason.
No thumb sucking please:whistling:!
Hermit crabs and snails in the refugium??
Is this advised or not?
Would the hermits and snails not feed off the other smaller pods and life in the refuge??
Thanks.

I got another beautiful specimen last week and its placed about 15cm from all other corals.
I noticed some bleaching after lights out with a torch on the side where the another brain is (15cm away). I'm thinking that it may be a sting from the other brain as all my parameters are in check. All my other brains are perfect as well.
Could it be that its having a hard time adjusting to the new lighting conditions from the LFS? Or maybe even my long spined urchin?
I can comment that I've never seen its feeder tentacles since I've had it which worries me a bit.
Thanks

Can you keep a rbta and a green bubble tip nennie in a boyu tl550 or will they start a chemical warfare? just thinking that they kinda the same species so might be possible. ive upgraded the lights and ive got everything i require to keep the nennies. im thinking it might be a little small to keep two nennies. what you guys thinking?

Hi
My tank has been running for about 2 weeks. It was running NSW for a week before I put in the rock. It was not LR as the rock had been out of the water for a few days. When I got it, I soaked it overnight in NSW, then scrubbed it clean with NSW and then soaked overnight again with fresh NSW. I noticed the marked growth after a couple days but it is growing. It seems soft as it does move a bit with the "current" but it hasn't moved from that spot. Sorry about the clarity of the pic, it's taken with my BB as my camera is out on loan to my folks.

Hi guys.I just want to know if you guys would recommend a sail fin tang.I did do some research and from what I could get from the site was that it is a good fish to start with. What I want to know is it easyer than the lipstick and will it also go on hungerstrike and does it settle faster in a new enviroment?:)
-
A while ago I added a Shrimp/gobi combination and just today they moved to a home at the back corner of the tank under my overflow skimmer.
Anyway they are in a place where food never gets to so I shot some pellets near them. In less than a minute the entire corner of the tank extending about 5" both ways was a maze of large 6" bristleworms. I knew I had a bunch of them but I never knew I had so many. They were crawling all over the shrimp and gobi who didn't seem to mind.
If anything dies in this tank it wil be gone in minutes. Great scavengers, and I will try to get a better picture.
I would imagine the worms are a larger percentage of the livestock than my fish.
Very cool. :yeahdude:

MASA,
I've got 3xOsram dual ballasts on my tank.
The tank is 0.65m high and 0.7mx0.7m (L)x(W).
I am having a constant issue with my earth leakage tripping in my house which results in all kinds of drama. This is being caused by moisture getting into the one ballast I've been 'forced' to place on the lighting hood itself and thus too close to the water. I've placed 2 of the ballasts in my cabinet as close to the top as possible for the T5' bulbs at the "back" of the tank, resulting in what I tell myself is no more than 1m of wire. These 2 ballasts never cause the earth leakage to trip. The issue is the 'front' set of bulbs which I reckon are about 0.5m from the back of the tank. If you do the math this would put the wiring length for the 'front' set of T5's at a minimum of 1.3-1.5m - way over what the ballasts recommend at 1m (maximum).
Will it still work if I rewire this ballast to be inside the cabinet and a length of 1.3-1.5m.
It's quite frustrating.
Other suggestions?
I've included a picture of the whole cabinet so you can see that I've opted for an extremely low lighting hood. It's compact, neat and I like the look of it... except it doesn't appear practical.

Hi Guys
I wonder if someone have the same problem I change salt brand and everything droped MAG, ALK, and CAL so now i dose my but off to get everything stable again
Water Par now
ph - 8.3
kh - 7.3 after dosing ALK 8.3 raised from 6.2
MAG - 1200 battle to get that up
Cal - 400
I don't know if I can name the brand
And yes I know you need to check fresh salt water mix
So question wat do i dose first MAG to get it to the right level. Because i can't get it above 1200 at the moment.
Or something else.
Thanks Charl

Hi Reefers,
We thought you might be interested in one of our recent installations.
We commisioned the tank for Mark McJannet in January 2011,since then
it has blossomed into a spectacular and succesful SPS dominated reef.
The tank is maintained by the owner who has become a fine reefer in a very short span of time, largely under the guidance of Adriaan who is very good at taking the Newbi out of our customers.:P
Here are some pics, which we will add to.
Please feel free to ask any questions you may need answering.:)
The tank is still new and effort was taken to ensure that there is sufficient space between corals to allow the colonies to fully express themselves in time.

Photo Exhibition: 'Oceans of Life'
The good news is that my photo of my Green Bubble Coral made the final selection from a national photographic competition held recently and is on display at the Iziko Museum Exhibition in Cape Town.
As part of National Marine Week, BirdLife South Africa has put together an exhibition of 50 oceanic wildlife themed photographs at the Iziko SA Museum. Presented as backlit Duratrans prints, the photographs pop from the wall with vivid colours, something that has to be seen in person!
Oceans of Life is running from 10 October till 20 November 2011 at the Iziko SA Museum in Cape Town.
Apologies, I can only post the photo after the exhibition closes.

Hi my name is Mohammed, and I reside in Durban, I used to own a 2m (FO) marine aqaurium and had to tear it down due to renovations, it wasnt a very pleasant experience due to lack of resouces and poor LFS advice. Actually I want to forget that whole experience and relearn things afresh, correctly this time perhaps. I will attempt to explain the little I know and hope the more experienced will be able to point out my shortcomings and possibly offer some advice.
I am wanting to reignite the passion I once had for reef tanks and wanting to do things right from the start with the right equipment, I do enjoy DIY and would prefer to do things myself interms of building the tank etc. Wanting to downscale I have opted to either build a 600X600X600 cube or get a conventional 4ft and convert.
My questions pertaining to the tank build first:
On a 600 high tank what thickness glass would suffice as i do not want to use the conventional cross brace. What other bracings could I use?, Ive seen tanks with bracing along the inside edge almost interlocked, any ideas as to how it is done? Pics will help.
secondly, for the wier I intend drilling the base of the tank and installing a durso standpipe, my qusetion is what diameter pvc (i will measure the OD of the fittings prior to drilling) would be sufficient for optimum flow from DT to sump, Ive used 50mm pvc in my past tank with external overflow boxes but i want to considerably reduce the noise this time round. Also could someone explain the components of the durso standpipe relative to the fittings available here in SA (the conventional ones available to me are the grey pvc ones uses in the A/C trade). If any one has a pic of the components used will really help.
Thirdly, I intend using a reef octupus tz2 skimmer. Will this be sufficienct for a 600 cube or a Std 4ft? also what sort of return pump capacity should i get to optimise the usage and flowrate over a DSB. (dont want to go too small, i.e smaller than the one supplied with skimmer, or too large that the DSB is not effective.
Fourthly, Lighting, I have about 10 single T5 fitting, the ones similar to unercounter lights, they entire fitting is about 2cm wide and about 55cm possibly 24w, they dont seem to have the chunky ballast those fitting used to come with and also have their own switches, will these be ok for 10k bulbs and actinics, dont want these fittings to underfire the pottential of the bulb and lose its efficiency, if that is even possible. I intend to use two white and two blue or even three if suggested, however i only wish to keep softies at this stage and grauate to stonies later.
Fifthly, being based in durban I have read on a few forums that collection of filtered water from Ushaka is possible, if so please could i get some direction as how I go about getting it. Top ups will be with RO from LFS.
Sixthly, how do auto topoff units work and were do i get the components to incorporate into a sump reservoir. I initially intended using an all plastic float switch plumbed from a gravity fed reservoir into the sump. same concept as a toilet cistern. I initially purchased this to use on my first build and stripped it and removed the filter, my concern was that the float switch (its actually an all plastic one for a toilet cistern) uses a rubber to stop the water flow and could deteriorate with salt water.
Ok too loaded for now, I await your advice and direction.

A man apparently abducted a 17-year-old girl on her way to school on Wednesday morning in Roodepoort on the West Rand, police said.
A grey Toyota Hilux bakkie pulled up alongside two girls walking on the corner of Rina and Herman streets in White Ridge around 7am, Lt-Col Tshisikhawe Ndou said.
A man got out and ordered the teenager into the vehicle. When the girl refused, he pointed a firearm at her until she complied.
The other girl ran away and the bakkie sped off with her friend. The girls were both pupils at Hoerskool Die Burger in Roodepoort.
Ndou said the man was thought to be aged between 20 and 30, with brown hair. The missing girl was dressed in a red and black skirt and a black pullover jersey with a yellow collar.

I'm seeing you....
Leave me alone...
Ok, I'm up searching for food.
Just to give my size away.
These snails are awesome detritus eaters. Moving around, searching for food. This one is a local Durbanite. Well Rocky Bay just outside the tidal pool originally.
These snail shells look very similar at first glans to that of Cone snails. But Cone snails are predators. But if you look closely at the second picture, you would see the wavy form or indentation at the front end of the shell lip (about a quarter of shell length from the front). That is were their one eye stick out. The other eye is at the front end.
Just a note too you all. They do not like to be man handled.
They are able to defend themselves against octopus. Their operculum got a very sharp pointy end and they can stab or spear their attackers with it. And they are fast.
One of them nailed me, luckily on my thumb nail. So be careful picking them up.
Also, beware of cone snails, some of them pack a mighty poison punch. They immobilize a small fish their size within a second or two. In generally, be careful when you see this shell shape.
The operculum, meaning little lid, (plural: opercula or operculums) is a corneous or calcareous anatomical structure which exists in many (but not all) groups of sea snails and freshwater snails - Thanks Wikipedia.

1 why is it better than an ordinary marine light
2 what is the differences ie do they last longer
3 why do we use them besides to light the the tank
-
Ok so I can't stop buying toys :)
So while I am in the USA bought some stuff:
1. 4x GHL Profilux Doser
2. Manjo Wand - The eletric Apistasia Zapper :) looking forward to that !!! - Who needs peperment shrimps ;)
3. I got a bunch of those HANNA digital testers :) just for fun and to test :) Got Phos and got Alk for now.
Going back in Nov looking at Profilux touch and if the Hanna digital testers work well will get the rest of them.
I think a review on MASA is needed ;) ?
-
So been away from home for three weeks. Starting to miss my tanks. Can't get to MASA for a week since the SECOM cable went down - first time I am on the site.
Sigh... how attached we get to our tanks!

I don't know about most people but I have a problem with small corals staying put. Especially is you have a type of fish that like to re aquascape.
Yes, you can glue everything in but that makes it hard to move things later if need be.
I like to use lead. I know if fresh water they sell lead strips to wrap around plants to keep them anchored but with reef tanks we don't like using any metals so I cut thin strips of lead and cover them with shrink tubing.
The shrink tubing can be gotten at any Radio Shack or even (I think) Home Depot. The lead I get from a plumbing supply or a scrap metal dealer. It is very cheap.
You can make it as heavy as you like and wrap it around the base of the coral.
You can even make longer strips and bend it around corals and larger rocks to secure them. The shrink tubing is black so you don't really see it.
Now my larger fish have a hard time throwing my nicely positioned corals to the substrait.
Have fun.
Lead and shrink tubing

There's an amazing new Odyssea light out that is 716w in total. It has 4 x 54w T5's and 2 x 250w Metal Halides in it. I have found a price and it will cost $340 to get it here excluding vat and taxes. Are there any sponsors that will be bringing these in?

Hey Guys
I need some help. I ordered myself some leds,2 weeks later I received them. rushed home, ripped out the Boyu lights and started building my new led setup. I worked throughout the night and did it look good. But,when I plugged it in,the one side went on and then dimmed and stayed on dimm. other half worked perfectly and still is. I bypassed the dimmer switch thinking it was that switch but still the stayed on dimm.swopped led drivers around and other side worked so its definitely the driver.
Where can I get a dimmable led driver in cape town or anywhere? I need it asap.
Can you use a normal led driver and dimm it with the dimmer switch or do you need a dimmable led driver?

Hey guy's .. I wanted to know with Mh is it the watts that matter most or does the size of the globe play a role etc. So what Im asking is would 2x 150w mh push out a bit more that 1x 250w mh?

I tried to frag a torch coral today as my first attempt at fragging a hard coral.
It had one head that was seperate from the rest, and I though it would be easy enough. I cut about 80% of the way through the stem, and then my blade couldn't get any further so I tried to snap it, but the whole head broke appart .:(
I have stuck the pieces to the rock, but they don't look so good, will try post a pic later. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone, and if its possible it will make it, and if theres anything I can do?

I got my existing Clarkii (about 5cm-6cm) a healthy perfect sized mate this weekend, (about half the size). As planned the smaller clown immediately showed submissive behavior when introduced to the tank, rolling on his side and making the spasm movements.
From what I've read that's step 1 in the pairing process, next is that the larger clown is suppose to "accept" its new mate. This has not taken place yet. The smaller clown hides way on the other side of the tank behind the power head. I actually have to feed it separately. The larger clown is actively searching for and chasing the smaller one, just keeping it at one side of the tank.
How long can I expect to wait before, if ever, the larger clown excepts the smaller one?

Hi everyone, I have a member that is battling to log on with his Blackberry, maybe someone here can help.
He was logging on just fine with his old phone, but he now has the new 9900 Bold and everytime he logs in and goes to another page he gets logged out. Is there any setting on the BB that needs to be changed?
Thanks

Hey guys, I hope this is posted in the correct section.
I been browsing the net non stop on the hunt for a decent tank to get started with. I found the JBJ 24 Gallon Deluxe or something like that on Dorrys Pets website.
Would this tank be suitable for a marine setup and is it ready to run or will i need to make some additions to the hardware before i get going?
Sorry for all the questions :) Your advice is greatly appreciated

Hello All,
I was wondering if there is a type of small starfish that eats the top layer off of SPS. I've noticed some of my purple calcius algae getting distinct white spots for a few weeks. Now I noticed on the bottom of my Monti Digi the same type of white blotches. It is recovering... no real damage. Looks just like a casual grazing. I'll take some pics and put them up once the fam is down for the night. Thanks for your help in advance!
PS - I've just got the new Vertex Illumina LED and it is flippin' brilliant! - couldn't resist telling someone... family isn't as amazed :P
-
Hi Guys/Gals
A little while ago I had the standard 5t lighting above my tank, my SPS's seemed to do well but growth seemed slow. I had an incident when my frog spore fell onto one of my SPS's and stung the cr@p out of it. Most of the coral is dead but there is some life at the bottom of the SPS. Will the SPS grow over is old skeleton or must I break it off and grow new? The reason why I ask is becaus the other SPS's seem to be having a great growth spurt but this one doesn't seem to be doing much/if anything :(
Sorry about the quality of the pic - digital zoom is seldom great :( but you sure you can see what I'm speaking about
On a brighter note, since I installed my LED's the growth of my SPS's have increased and I would like you know if you feel that it's a good growth rate. I have also notice a big change in my coral colour since I have been running th LED's :yeahdude:

Hi there guys,
Please give me a hand here - I'm designing a new sump for a setup I'm doing..
Have a look at the below sketches I've done and offer some criticism please.. you'll see that I'm thinking about going a Skimmer - NP Reactor/Live Rock - Return type setup.
You'll see that my sump area isn't very wide (380mm) so I haven't got too much room to play with but I've tried to pull something from somewhere.
I've reserved a space for my Skimmer (probably too big) and I've measured out the width needed for my Reactor but as you can see the length is to the end of the tank which obviously doesn't work - I'd like to reserve maybe a bit of room for possibly a couple more reactors.
1st Q - Is it wise to split the Skimmer section into the Reactor section and the LR section back to the return?
2st Q - should I remove the "Live Rock" area completely and just have the skimmer plumb directly into the NP Reactor and then from there straight to the return section?
3nd Q - Or should I convert the "Live Rock" area and half of the Reactor section into a reservoir area?
4rd Q - Or should add another section before the LR section and have my Reactor release into there and then from there the water would go through the LR section to the return?
As you can see my questions could go on for a while.... but I'm going to get some suggestions first from you guys - would be appreciated.
See below for pics - if anything is unclear, please tell me. Thanks.

Hi All
I have been wondering about how much of a difference it makes to let your freshly mixed salt water stand over night, and what that does to the actual chemistry of the water, also how much of a difference it makes if you heat up your water before adding it, would a 0.5 degree drop in temperature make a big difference? Lets say I mixed enough water for a 10% change, and all the salt dissolved quite quickly, as the red sea coral pro usually does, and then I just added it right away what would the problem be? Anyone who understands this your advice is appreciated.

Hey guys
Didn't even know there was such an informative forum like this around. Glad there is though. I've got a huge koi pond outside and a big tropical tank inside but now its for something thats always interested me more than the rest. The marine world.
I'm looking at starting off with something reasonably small. Maybe a small starter kit to get me going and take it from there. Is there something like that on the market?
I spent the last weekend pottering around various pet stores trying to gather some info on it.
I got the just of whats required. The next step is getting the tank and kicking on.
Where would I get the best prices on a Starter tank if such thing exists.
Jhb Roodepoort area :)
Thanks in advance

I have my bubble for a few months now and has been opening full ever since but since about two weeks ago it has bleached and is not opening fully. First half of the coral bleached and recently the other half as well. I did accidentally suck up and pop a bubble about 3 weeks back when siphoning out cyano. Could it be this that caused it to bleach and not open properly.
Sorry dont have parameters to give, will only be able to have it tested tomorrow.
Will upload a pic now.

Hi All, just to let you know that there is a shortage worldwide of Rare Earth Magnets, these magnets are used by lots of companies, not just TUNZE, and it will bring some changes regarding technical data or spare part price. All magnet holders and glass cleaners will be affected by this shortage.
The TUNZE website
www.tunze.com will show all these changes in detail.
Cheers, Anita

So I started using Tropic Marin Lipovit in combination with Biofish Food and my fish go ape****! They love it but I just noticed my skimmer is barely foaming. I'm thinking that its the oiliness from the Lipovit.
Anyone experienced something like this?
Here's a pic, impressed with the garlic pellets, you can actually smell the garlic just by opening the lid.

Good day to all,
I have had Tanks for most of my teenage/Adult live, But got bored of simple freshwater tanks. So decided to go the Marine route.
My tank has now been running for about 3 weeks,(will post some pics). I must say that there is alot more attention needed to get going.
I had some advantages over brand new setup, as I got hold of some already cycled water, this made life alot easier, started up, left for 1 week, checked, and the salinity was 100%.
I do have alot of questions, but will ask them as the need arrives.
-
The conditions were pretty bleak this weekend, with massive swell and resultant murky water, but it's no longer as cold as it's been. There have been rumours of fish being caught already? There are tons of pelagic fry in all of the rock pools, but I haven't seen anything else, not even Anthias.
Sooo... who's seen what? Or what are you hoping to catch this season?

Old fish. What is an old fish? I am not sure but I do know that some fish live a really long time. How long? Real long, like over 20 years. I think most larger fish can live much longer than that but the small fish we normally keep seem to have a much shorter lifespan. From my experience tangs can live well into their twenties but I have never kept one longer than about 14 years. After that they seem to have accidents. Even percula clowns live over 20 years. Some types of fish have very short lifespans like seahorses and pipefish. I can not keep seahorses more then about 3 years. Of course they are probably a couple of years old when I collect them so I am not sure of their lifespan. Pipefish also, just a few years although the bluestripe I have now is about 3 or 4.
Why am I thinking about this? :1:
I think about all sorts of useless things and I just came back from a nice day on the water on my boat and as I was watching the bunker (menhaden) jump all around the boat, the thought hit me. How long do these things live?
As I look at my tank I have a watchman gobi about 5" long. He is about 12 or 13 years old and was part of a breeding pair. I got the pair when they were very young and after countless spawnings the female disappeared. I am assuming old age but fish get heart attacks, strokes, cancer and a bunch of other things. I am going with old age. I have no Idea how long watchman gobies are supposed to live but people are supposed to live to about 78 years or so. We all know that some of us die much younger and so do fish. My remaining watchman gobi is showing his age. He was very active for most of his life, scouring the bottom for food at night and coming to the glass in the daytime at feeding time. Now he kind of lays around waiting for me to squirt some food at him. When he grabs it, it is not with the same vigor that I am accustomed to seeing. He also chews for a long time before he takes another bite. Just like old people. He is clearly old and even has lines on his face. No really. I have noticed this twice before on two different fish. One was a 14 year old percula clown that was one of my first fish in the 70s and one was a 13 year old figure eight puffer that was my very first saltwater fish. He was actually bought in fresh water and then my tank was converted to brackish and then salt.
I once had a brutlyd or cusk eel who lived to 18 before I killed him in an accident. I don't remember if he had any lines but maybe his lifespan was 30 or 40 years, I don't know. :(
The watchman gobi is still very healthy and his blue spots seem like neon lights. Thats one way to tell a healthy fish, their colors seem irridescent and not dull.
My 17 year old fireclown does not seem to be showing his age as much but I can start to see the slight lines in his face and he is slowing down a bit. I also have a much younger fireclown and you can easily tell from their faces that this one is only half the age of the other one.
Now I know that fish do not age like us and they have much different skin so don't think I rub Oil of Oley on their faces but you cna definately tell an old fish from their face.
OK stop laughing, it's true.
Here they are young

And Old

Guys, I googled myself through such a lot of marine forums worldwide and I have to say that we are here on MASA very spoiled.
The whole forum set up, sub-forums, etc. is way better than on any other forum.
Many forums are having a very senseless index and it takes a lot of time to find what you are looking for.
So, a very BIG thank you to the MASA team. Keep up the good work.

Photo's: Hi guys
I have made a decision to get out of reefing for the time being. I will come back fighting no doubt, but time spent with my family is being taken up by this so I wanna put that on the back burner for now
My tank resembles a LFS more than a reef as most of you know so its gonna be tough getting pics of everything especially the ones in the back, so i will put up pics and prices of some of the items. When people collect we can haggle about the other ones in the tank. For now all the coral, then later the fish, then the rock and then the equipment. Please dont ask for shipping as I am not going to be doing that, collection ONLY. I have various items of various sizes, ranging from R50 up to R600 for the big stuff, and here is a short list of some off them. Other stuff include green, red, blue shrooms.
Rules:
1. If you place dibs I expect you to pick it up by no latest this coming weekend.
2. If you place dibs, I expect a PM with regards to collection or your dibs falls away.
1. Pin cushion, 25cm R450

2. Nuclear palys R400 (DIBS @gMAN To be confirmed)

3. Zoas R300

4. Zoas R300

first things first. this was a trial and error experiment that eventually worked out for me. i hope it will work out for other reefers on a budget. there were times i broke part of stuff etc. where i could have done things better i will tell you. where i broke stuff and repaired it i will tell you so that you wont make the same mistakes i did. if you are unclear about anything or if i have worded something incorrectly i will try and fix it. if you try this and it doesnt work, talk to me and we can work through this together. thanks in advance for your patience.

Hi there guys
Havent actually started a thread on my tank yet so I thought let me give it a bash. A few things about my tank. I bought a Sun Sun back in 2010. Second week of November to be exact from a LFS which I have never been back to sadly.
Tank Dimensions.....1020W x 410D x 650H.
Tank Volume.....+- 210 litres.
Filtration.....1 x Gutter Filter (Bio Balls, Carbon, Filter Wool).
1 x Cannister Filter (Dophin C-1300).
1 x Internal Filter (Carbon, Filter Wool).
Skimmer.....Dymax XP-30.
Livestock Fish.....3 x Blue Cromus.
2 x Bhangai Cardinals.
2 x Common Clowns.
1 x Dorrey Tang.
1 x Mandarin.
1 x Six-Striped Wrasse.
1 x Sand-Shifter Goby (Large Mouth).
Livestock Clean-up Crew.....2 x Cleaner Shrimp.
1 x Tiger Pistol Shrimp.
1 x Blue Legged Hermit Crab.
1 x Orange Legged Hermit Crab.
3 x Various LR Crabs (That I know of).
Livestock Corals.....To be updated.
Long story short I bought a freshwater tank and my beginning was a rocky one. Lost a few living creatures because of my lack of knowledge which I now regret. From where I started to where I am now is two different places though. My tank has settled and matured nicely to a point where Kenyan tree offcuts given to me free by my regular LFS (because they look like they are going to die) flourish and is growing like a weed now.
Before one of the corals I lost, a Kenyan tree just shriveled up and died in my new water. Honestly I introduced it into my tank after a mere 2 and a half months.
One tip I can give any new people to this hobby is patience. It will serve you well in this hobby. Below are some pics of photos I took a few months in from starting to where I am today.
I must admit as well that I see my tank as my sump in all honesty. I do not have a sump so I make do with a cannister filter and a gutter filter and thus why I say my ST is actually my sump.

One of my first pics. About four months in.
About 4 - 6 Months in..
My current layout..
Left facing View..
Right facing View..

The Kenyan Tree I spoke of which came back to Life..

My Dorrey..
So beautiful..

Benifits of having a sump. You dont see all the heaters etc...
Six Corals on one LR.
Otherwise I love my tank and watching it grow as the time slowly passes. Considering the flat which my Wife and I stay this tank was a perfect buy. Not too noisy or messy. Was a mission to get going but now that its pretty much looking after itself I am a happy Man.
Thanks for taking the time to look at a brief summary of my tank.

I don't know how to lay-out this Thread, I only know that I'm, to a degree, not happy with my Tank..I've so many questions and to little knowledge to understand properly the "insides" of my Tank...I'll be the 1st to admitt that I don't always read thru all the Threads as most are "hard-core" Reefers with contraptions on their Tanks that makes me think of a man on life support..:P..with the result that I don't think it will have any bearing on my situation..:(..hmmm maybe that could be one of my problems..
As some know...I have a small TL450..with a LOUSY Skimmer..I do believe that was the beginning of my downfall...anyway, here goes all the confusing questions and contradictory questions...
I wanted my Tank to be "natural"...but Skimmer was a headache..it really wasn't pulling out anything and I see the "food" just drop to the sand..hardly any suction from the Skimmer regarding flow in my Tank..with the result:
1..... that I had high Nitrates.. 10mg/L-25mg/L..might I add towards the end of the week, day or two before water change...could I not have kept that in check with having two water changes, instead of one 20%..and fed less..? Instead I was told to add Ammonia Absorbing Stones and then later...PhosGuard..as you can never go wrong with a Phosphate Media...so slowly but surely my Tank started going the "Chemical Route" something that I didn't want happening..:(..
2....Filter got less as I had no space for them...then I had a bad RO batch which turned my water green and no matter how many water changes I did, I couldn't get rid of it...hardly had flow and almost no real Filter...that's when I got the Canister Filter...WOW that turned out to be the best purchase EVER....water
was clean within 10min and the flow was awesome..;)..but downside to that was the accidental "over dosing" of Activated Carbon...lost my Zoas and my Tank got flooded with Cyano...do I really need AC...? Can I go less "chemical" if I remove them..or do I REALLY need AC...does Ceramic Rings also fall under "chemical"...?
3.....I now find myself having to add bacteria, as I now, apparently, have non...probably trace elements also.. and started with my 1st BioDigest last week...but if I'm going to do the Probidio route...I'm I not the owner of a ULNS...?
I don't want Ultra Low Nutrient System...but how else can I get Bacteria back into my Tank...I wanted my Tank to produce bacteria naturally, but do understand that I won't be able to introduce different strands..and diversity is obviously a better balanced Tank...so how do I add bacteria without going ULNS..or IS adding bacteria going ULNS..? Sorry...that's were I'm still a bit confused...
All I know is that my Zoas has all but disintegrated before my eyes since my AC episode and the one that is open..isn't really growing at all now...BUT since the Filter and Carbon came, my Torch Coral has grown from 5 heads to 10 heads in about 2 months I think...he came the same time as the Filter so I can't really say for sure if it's the Filter polishing my water...
How can I get my Tank back to being less "chemical"...I was thinking of taking out Ceramic Rings, Activated Carbon...that would then just leave me with Stones and PhosGuard...but if I leave those two Media's in, won't that then throw something else out...? I have to add that I do have LR in my Chamber next to my Skimmer...it use to house the original Bio Balls and Ceramic Rings(3rd Chamber)..
Sorry if it's all muddled up but I actually don't know how to go about getting my Tank a bit more "natural" without repecussions...
-
I bought this skimmer a month back installed it and yet its not forming form..
its working since 4 weeks and not forming form
im bit frustrated tried all setting but still its not working.

Ok, so I may be posted to Hong Kong with my better half (I am a house husband) and I was wondering does anyone know what the way of life is like there, or maybe even lived there? I know property prices and rentals are through the roof, but their income tax rate is only 17%. Any info would be great, might be going in six months.

Hi all, I'm wanting to purchase some lighting for my 5ft tank that I'm setting up and I just want to ask a simple question...
Should i go for a 5ft light unit or should I go for a 4ft unit as the lighting "spreads" at the sides?
It's also a good R1500 less so I'm kinda wondering... thanks!

Anybody stocking these at the moment. Then also, other than Gieseman, what 250W SE bulbs are available?

I was completely sold on a DSB over reactors and now I'm not sure anymore. I've just been told that if you have a DSB it needs to be pulled out and redone every so often or it can turn against itself and cause problem later on. I want my new system to be simple and maintenance friendly so this would be a huge inconvenience. Is this true? Secondly would it not be simpler and easier to maintain with reactors? I already have a Phosphate and Nitrate reactor which only needed cleaning and re-packing every 6 months or so?

Guys, many corals can give us an indication, when a water parameter is running out of the norm.
This thread is to share experiences we all have with certain corals, when certain water parameter are running out of the desired level.
Target is to find similar experiences to determine a species that really can indicate a drop or rise of a certain water parameter.
So start sharing your experiences. The future should be, that we only have to test water parameter when such indicator coral shows that there is something out of the standard.
Bali polyps as the first species are good indicators for nitrate levels. As soon as the tentacles of the bali polyps become shorter, you should test your nitrate. It is climbing up. If your bali polyps have long tentacles, your nitrate level is fine. This works only if you know what bali polyps look like with no or very little nitrate. Do not expect them to work as an indicator if your tank has 25mg nitrate per litre at the time when you introduce them to your tank. ;)

I have noticed a few disturbing trends on MASA at the moment and I dont know if its a trend in general or only here on MASA. There are hobbyists keeping bleached anemones in small tanks with inadequate lighting, especially for such species as the Magnificas, not only that, they have 2 or 3 different species in less than 200 liters of water. I see comments like dont worry I am not new to reefkeeping, I know what Im doing Then reading through the thread it becomes clear to the more experienced hobbyists that you are clearly not as experienced as you think or just dont care about the live stock you are looking after. I see hobbyists trying to keep fish in Reef systems that should only be kept in species specific systems. To top it off they have the attitude of I dont expect it to live for long anyway. Conflict now arises between these reefers and the more experienced hobbyist, where the experienced hobbyist points out the mistake and the less experienced reefer now has a dented ego, so retaliates. This will eventually end up in a forum war because the long term experienced hobbyist is passionate about the animals in our care and understands that it is a privilege to be able to keep these animals, not a right. The inexperienced hobbyist now defends himself with things like MASA is full of negative posts and people are just jealous.
Guys/gals you may be able to impress friends and family in the short term with your new difficult to do hobby and you may have enough money to throw at your system every time something dies, but you cant buy credibility in this hobby, it still has to be earned in the long term. IMHO I believe that you actually dont have any bragging rights to any animal in your system if it has been in your care for less than 2yrs.
A very small percentage of hobbyists are in this hobby for the long haul, speak to your LFSs and they will tell you that about 95% of people that start the hobby will drop out before the 2yr mark, the 2 main reasons being, its too expensive and you cant keep stuff alive. For the long time hobbyists they realize that both the above are not true. Granted the initial outlay is expensive, but from there on it becomes as expensive or as difficult as you make it. This all depends on the amount of research you are prepared to do and the type of system you want to keep. So please do the research and enjoy the hobby long term. MASA is here essentially to offer advice, whether you take it or not is up to you. The quality of that advice is a educated guess at best and depends on the amount of information you are able to supply, but please dont think you blazing any trails in the hobby by keeping 10 tangs and a Magnifica in a nano just because no one else seems to do it. Lets see the results at the 2yr mark. While on this trail blazing stint, please take stock of the amount of animals you are killing along the way. If the death of these animals doesnt make you feel remorse and keep motivating you to do even more research, you are in the wrong hobby. Again please do the research and become a long term knowledgeable hobbyist, you will be surprised how relatively affordable and relatively second nature the hobby becomes.

I'm looking to buy my first DSLR and unfortunately don't have the money to buy new.
I've found a second hand Canon 450D for R2800.00. It is just the body, charger and cables. They don't know how many shutter actuations etc. Apparently it is in good condition.
Is it a good buy? Should I go for it or wait and keep looking?
Any advice will be appreciated.

Hi All
So Ive had my clam for almost a year now and he is doing well. Think its a Tridacna crocea.
So when I did my crab hunting this morning at 1am. I saw that his foot had let go of the piece of rock he came with.
Is this something to worry about or is its way of saying I want to move to somewhere else in this aquarium?
-
What are your favorite fish names?
I named one of my clownfish 'John Wayne Gacy' (psycho serial killer who dressed up like a clown...)
The other one, my son named 'Carlitta'
The coral banded shrimp is 'Candy', because he looks like a candy cane.
The large hermit is 'Tank', because he's like a tank running through the tank.
The corris wrasse is 'The Devil', because he is and he needs to be destroyed.
We're still working on the others...

What equipment do you need for a quarantine tank, pumps and so on. What can i use if a fish got white spot, but there is corals in the tank?
-
just a quick one, do you think that the mixing of fish and corals from around the world have any impact on our livestock?
eg yellow tangs from hawaii mixed with fish from indo? the different SG levels, temp and Geo-location make any difference?
or are they happy to live anywhere like gold fish :)

Full system sales or multiple items for sale.Thread title: Nano on steroids for sale - complete
Location: Weltevredenpark, JHB
Shipping or Collection only: Collection only
Photo's and description/list of items for sale: Hi guys,
I am selling my nano, as I am upgrading to a bigger tank.
The idea with this tank was to make a anemone friendly nano, so I built in back compartments with Seio M620's on both sides circulating water through 2 compartments and back into the tank so no chance of anemone soup. So, no pumps are visible in the tank itself. Basically a JBJ or Boyu on steroids. I have successfully kept an RBTA in this tank for a good 6 months (with a different light though than the one for sale). It more than doubled in size and recovered from being slightly bleached, so an awesome nano tank.
Specs of tank itself:
45x45x50cm (lxhxw) rimless - 6mm glass - around 100 liters in total - tank is basically brand new, no scratches, was built in March this year
Auto Top up Chamber built into the back
Small DSB/ LR rubble area for breeding pods in back compartment
1m high stand built in 20mm square tubing - as new, built in March this year
Included with the tank:
Reef Octopus HOB skimmer that fits on back compartment - model: BH-100 - basically brand new, out of the box in March this year, same pump as a TS1, so works very well
300w heater
2x150w MH (one with 10000k globe, one with 20000k globe)
2x Seio M620's that circulates water from the back compartments to tank - both in perfect working condition
Aragonite DSB and thin layer of aragonite sand for main tank
Brand new PC fan with blue LED light to cool tank with inverter plug
Clip on Rio Mini Sun Moonlight LED light
Some GSP's that grows on the back of the tank... :whistling:
No livestock included. The tank will be available for collection by 17th of October.
Some pics (please note the light in the pictures are not included, the 150w MH is a normal downlight model):

Full system sales or multiple items for sale.Thread title: Large 2.5m Tank and all equipment for sale
Location: Newlands, Cape Town
Shipping or Collection only: Collection only
Photo's and description/list of items for sale: Large 2.5m Tank and all equipment for sale
Just a quick note that I'll be selling all my equipment. I still need to itemize and photograph it properly, and figure out sensible prices, but in the mean time, anyone who's interested can contact me (yes, I read the rules - just trying to get the info out there for now). I'm realistic about the value of second-hand reefkeeping setups, so any reasonable offers will be entertained.
In summary it's all the equipment in these two threads (less the cracked tank in the second thread, of course). There are plenty of photos of the stuff that's for sale scattered through those threads.
Quinton Goes Large (2.5m x 1.0m x 0.75m): Quinton Goes Large (2.5m x 1.0m x 0.75m) - Marine Aquariums of South Africa
Quinton's new 2m Abyss: Quinton's new 2m Abyss - Marine Aquariums of South Africa
From memory, here are the main items:
- Large Tank: 2.5m x 1.0m x 0.75m (approx 1800 litres)
- Steel stand for above tank: custom made from 50mm square tubing.
- Reef Inmates 400W SPS Extreme Lighting Unit
- Large Chiller (converted aircon unit)
- Large Deltek Skimmer
- Bubblemaster BM250
- 2 x Vortech MP40 Pumps with Wireless Controllers
- 2 x Large return pumps (will look up the makes and models shortly)
- Calcium Reactor with all accesories, including pH controller
- Kalk stirrer
- A variety of other cheaper, Chinese powerheads and pumps
- About a million other bits and pieces that I'll probably give away to buyers of the above.
If you're interested, please reply to this thread. As soon as I have the time (in the next few days), I'll dig everything out of storage and itemize/photograph it. In the mean time I'm happy to answer any questions about the equipment.

Hi all,
please help!!!! AGAIN!!!!
Is the use of metronidazole effective in the treatment of white spot in a reef tank.
I was told to strain some live brine shrimp into a container and mix the powdered
medication into this. Wait a few minutes, then feed the fish.
Problem is the one that is most severly affected is not feeding
Any advice will be highly appreciated.
THanking you in advance.

Hi All,
I am seriously looking for a medium to large Yellow Watchman Goby. Mine died for no apparent reason after being with a Pistol Shrimp for more than a year. They were extremely close and very happy. I am afraid the Pistol will perish now as he does not come out into the open without his Watchman. I am feeding him with the feeding tube to make sure he gets food.
I have been to most of the LFS in the Johannesburg/Pretoria area but they all have extremely small specimens, which would not be wise to pair with the Pistol.
Please!!! I am desperate :dft004::dft004::dft004:

Hey MASA
I just bought a Tunze 9002 skimmer. I forgot to add the skimmer dimentions to the measurements and now the skimmer doesnt fit into my tl550. Stupid,i know. or the skimmer fits but the cup is too long to fit without removing the hood. So its just the cup I need to get rid off.
Anyway. Does the skimmer cup do anything other than collect or has the way its shape got anything to do with efficiant skimming.
Here is my plan. I want to remove the cup,add a piece of pvc or pipe into the skimmer where the cup was supposed to be,connect a piece of clear tubing or hose to the pvc pipe and let the crap run all the way down to the ground into the cup or container. Does this make sense? Maybe Ill drink a few beers and then I will be able to explain better.:lol:
I really hope there is a way to mod this skimmer to fit inside the hood coz I have already cut the magnet so there is no way of returning it for something else. :(

Just for fun and kicks...
For me, its definitely the water changes. The idea of mixing the odd 150L, getting exactly that amount of old water out of the tank and the new water in crushes my soul every Thursday.
What do you guys enjoy the least?

hi are you able to get hold of the above please

Hi guys
So I'm a last year bcom marketing student and I have plenty time to go and just check out all the places with marine stock and believe me I've been to all around the jhb and pta area.
What I've noticed is we all have a passion for this hobby and I think its important for the lfs to also have a passion for it and at all the sponsors you that I've been to (Dorry pets,Idol marine, jungle aqautics,Exotic aqauriums and wild on pets) have been fantastic in advise and on care etc,
All the other pet shop (that's not sponsors) is a bit shocking to see the care and handling of these beautiful animals. So therefore I have to say the sponsors are really doing a great job and I would suggest all to rather make use of the sponsors.

Hi MASA
Is RO WATER the same as distilled water ?
-
its all full of coming soon, when will there be info on it?
-
If this happens one day yellow tangs will vanish from aquariums, so never underestimate the value of your marine life because if some people get their way , you wont have an aquarium. It is up to us the hobbyists to protect our hobby in a responsible and sustainable manner - captive breeding must be encouraged and supported too!If you see captive bred stock even if it is more expensive support it because it is the future!

I have a funny question..
If i dont have white-spot in my tank, and want some caulerpa from a reefer close to me, that does have white-spot in his tank... will the caulerpa transfer it?
I thought of getting some, doing a quick freshwater dip, and then adding to my sump.. not adding his water at all?
Advice anyone?

hi all, i have decided to shut down my current running tank, simply because ive always wanted a cube, and because i was battling to keep this current one to always look good had alot of problems with cyno ect, read some more and more and broke it down to the lights been underated and the skimmer and water current.
I now have bought a 800x800x600 cube, water at 550, i have got a 150w halide 14000k BLV globe, and 4 t5 24w tubes, 3 coral star sylvania and one reef teck.
sump is 700x500x500, with a reefteck ts2 skimmer rated to 600L, a aqua medic nitrate reducer, aqua medic phosphate reactor, and a DIY carbon reactor.
sump has two chambers one for the reactors and skimmer other for LR and then the return pump.
the lighting unit i have made myself, i have bought some good reflectors for the T5s.
please comment as i really like to hear more ppls opinions

Hi, Does anyone know how to tell the gender of banggai cardinals?. Internet seems sketchy with ways of determinig the gender.
-
I must be one of the most difficult and @n@l customers, but when it comes to being treated well I don't hesitate to give credit where it's due. @
wild on pets has been fantastic to me. I went to NYC for the weekend on my way to some business in other parts of the USA, checking my cell I see a twitter message that they have new stock. I phone Sydney (excuse the spelling if I get it wrong!!!) who owns @
wild on pets he knew who I was (I do buy a lot from them) explained what they had and gave advise on what to get.
So I phoned the GF and sent her with a shopping list to @
wild on pets. When she got there he was waiting for her and she ended up getting completely the opposite of what I wanted which I totally don't mind :) she did get my mandarin though :) and better corals than I actually chose - the wonders of gfs @
wild on pets is honest and often helps me out with the little things which count. Even though I got a million calls from the GF trying to puesuade me to get some stunning SPS (she was sending pics via bbm) Sydney @
wild on pets was on the net and in his book making sure I had all the info needed to make the call I needed to make. He understood I was overseas actually on boat and knew that I had no other way to make the call unless I had the info he dug up for me. I even got bbm pic's of the text in the book.
All I got to do is ask him for anything and BANG it happens.
To Sydney, Brin and the @
wild on pets crew well done guys you have taken on @n@l customer and made him a loyal @
wild on pets customer. I would def recommend @
wild on pets to anyone in the community and is my first port of call when I need something. I will drive out to them +- 30km one way just to go see what's available and have a reefing chat with the guys.
Sydney (@
wild on pets) still waiting for that iodine test kit though :D

i found this fella in my overflow section, feeding on dead snails...anybody with an id, i sumped him now and he's a good 6-8cm which is a sizeable thing in real life.....
i took him to be a 'fire worm' which i think is just a relative of a bristle worm....i dont play in my sump that often so he can live there and i'll just watch out for him....

I really seem to be battling with cyano at the moment and am not sure what else I can do. I have read nearly all the threads on cyano possible and have tried almost every suggestion. It is growing everywhere, on the substrate, on the rocks and is driving me absolutely nuts. It has basically taken over one of my rocks with yellow polyps and seems to have killed them off :(
My setup is:
DT 700x450x450
Sump 615x325x325
The sump has 3 chambers, bubble magus NAC3 in the first, DSB + Chaeto + Red Bamboo Algae in second, 3rd is return. I have two small reactors (one DIY), one was running PhosGuard and the other is running ammonia removing stones. I have also added an airstone into the sump. In the last 2-3 months I have been changing the PhosGuard every 2nd week.
The setup was purchased from a MASA member so everything was well established. I re-did the DSB as I was worried about die off so this is probably not 100% up and running yet.
The only thing I am dosing right now is MB7, I have reduced my feeding to a small amount of flakes twice a day. I do a 15-20% water change weekly. I also recently bought my own RO unit to ensure the water quality was correct.
I have stopped running my supplement T5's during they day and just have my 20000k 150W MH running for 4 hours. The DSB runs on a reverse cycle with a 24w cool white energy saver (
About 2 weeks ago I basically stripped the tank, brushed and rinsed all of the LR to remove any cyano and siphoned the sand bed to ensure it was clean. My tank was looking great until a couple of days ago when the cyano came back with force.
I added a blue banded goby to try and assist keeping the sand bed clean.
I currently have two Sunsun 3000lph in the DT running off of a wave maker alternating the pumps every 2 min. They are pointed downwards at the moment.
Some questions about the pumps:
1. For my size of tank the Sunsun pumps should be enough but the flow doesn't seem that great. The flow is great close to the pump but seems to fade off quite quickly. If I drop food just above the pump it pushes it about half way across the tank. Do the pumps maybe need replacing?
2. The only way I can get decent flow over the sand is to point the pumps down, I see a lot of recommendations for the pumps to be angled towards the surface of the water. Should I have one pointing up and the other down?
3. Is the wave maker needed or should I just have both pumps running all the time? If so how should I point them?
4. I've noticed the cyano is growing on rocks even where there is strong direct flow, i thought cyano would not grow in a high flow area?
I have considered adding an ATS but am quite limited with space. Does anybody have any other suggestions as I am pulling my hair out here.

Fish for saleCommon Name: Clown surgeonfish

Size of fish 8 - 10 cm head to tail approx not 100% sure
How long have you had the fish? About 7 months
Is the fish eating? yes like a pig

Your location. paulshof
Price: R300
Photo's: Hi Reefers
I am in the process of selling a few of my livestock as they are now to big and i wont be around in December to take care of them.
THe surgeon is a very attractive and beautiful fish. Got him when he was very small and has grown quite alot since then. My tank is just to small and he needs more space. Alot would be very wary when purchasing this fish as it is said that it is very aggressive etc. Since i have him, he has not been aggressive with the other inmates ie. Yellow tang, regal tang, percular clown, firefish etc. But he does need alot of space to swim.
If you keen i need some time to catch him.
Thanks
Sorry abt the pic but his to fast

Hi Hobyists, DIY and electronic GURUS.
I have been looking for an inexpensive, flexible hardware and software gadget that i can configure and program to monitor and control my tanks electrical equipment. The purpose is to monitor and control the environmnet and give me freedom of manipulation, data information and ability to take required actions.
I found this device - Arduino
Arduino - HomePage
Im no electrcial nor logics skilled, i am hoping that others are familiar with this piece of device and could provide insight or even start a Arduino thread for making this device usable in our tanks.
Any interested?
Arduino playground - HomePage
Or is this already widely used here at MASA....perhaps im not up to date with the latest.

Hi,
I hope this is in the right forum.
I have a query and unfortunately i cant take a photo coz what i need to identify is too far back and too small to take a pic.
Ill try describe as best as possible.
Its about 5mm big. Its white and has slight "hairs"/tentacles. The best way to describe it is it looks like a tiny cactus. A round one. It has fine hair all around it. and what looks like a "flower" on the top.
One week i was looking in the tank and found one, the next week i saw 4 of them.
Can anyone help?

Hi all I managed to get a small piece of chaeto on the weekend Thanks @eric.f I am a bit concerned though. I always thought it floated where mine has sunk to the bottom of my sump should I put something in there to hold it closer to the surface closer the light or do I just leave it at the bottom?

Hi all,
Didn't know where else to put this thread. So I use filter floss in chamber number 1 of my sump. This is the chamber that the over flow flows into and where my active carbon, phos remover and brightwell nitrat-R is in. In this same chamber I have as much LR as I can possibly fit in. The problem I have is the floss goes brown very quickly and I travel alot (right now in the US). I have been struggling with nitrates since day one sitting between 10ppm to 25ppm.
Questions:
1. Do in really need the floss?
2. If I remove the floss and leave it as just the media (Carbon, Phos ,Nitrate) with the live rock, second chamber the skimmer and heaters and the third chamber the return pump and some more live rock. Will that work?
I think the filter floss might just be becoming the nitrate trap I can't het rid of. I don't feed a lot, I have a good stocking of fish and coral, even have a good stocking of clams which should theoretically love nitrates ....
Would like to hear what you guys think.

This skimmer is now 5 months in my system and driving me loopy, no matter what I do I just cannot get it to skim dry ??? surely by now it should be broken in ???
Tried countless options, raised and lowered water level in sump, even tried closing the silencer a little with some prestic to make finer bubbles but to no avail.
When water level sits low, I does build up but I can leave it for 2-3 days and no skimmate overflows ???
ANY input or tips would be appreciated ???
No problem in skimming wet, as seen below ???

I want to up my filtration and polish my water. I've got the skimmer, refugeum, dsb, passive carbon/phos bags; but I have a full bio-load, a tendency to over feed, and a bit of cyano in the refugeum (on the cheato) :p I was thinking of adding a canister filter. Can I run phos remover/carbon/zeolite and floss in a canister filter? What's the difference between a phos reactor and a canister filter?

Hi guys bought a brain coral last weekend was fine until yesterday when the power went of for 4 and a half hours. I just want to know it looks bleached and its hard,is it dead and was it because power was off for so long?because the temp only fell by 1-2 degrees in that time,
I have some zoas, polyps, kenia tree and torch coral and they seem to be fine, any advise on what could have effected this?

Hi guys,
I bought a bicolour angel last week, from a reputable LFS, it unfortunately didn't make its first night, dont know why, my tanks been running for 3 years, lots of swimming and hiding spots, parameters in check, i dripped the fish slowly for about 3 hours in lowdark light, (sump), after lights out in DT, I transferred it to the DT, and then found it dead the next morning, okay but since then, iv had 2 other long established fish, die also. could it be related, the other 2 fish didnt look sick, could the angel have brought in something, Oh i also bought a Bubble coral the same day, all my coral is doing great, please any recommendation to prevent more death, help pls

Hi peeps,
I took out my LR today in a last ditch attempt to get it out of my tank, the glass trick doesn't work with this crab =/
The rock is a big solid piece (about 4kgs) and is currently sitting in the kitchen sink covered in RO water. This was done roughly 20 minutes ago however nothing has come out from the rock.
So my questions are: How long should I leave this rock in there? And will this affect the coralline on the rock?
The rock in question is the big one on your right:

Im building a tank, 900 x 450 x 280 (deep). I have a 6mm base, will 4mm be sufficient for all the sides? If so i'll save time ordering and waiting for delivery because i have access to sheets of 4mm.

Hi guys, i recently got z hammer coral for the tank, and last night we had some friends over... Needless to say i was telling them how to feed it and care for it etc, and left the lounge for a while... As I came back, I saw my mate with the syringe in the tank, and he sprayed the hammer with some Reef Snow!
The coral was perfectly extended yesterday, but you can see how it has receded now...
Is there anything I can do to coax her out again and prevent any damage that may have occurred?
