Floss

Hi all,

Didn't know where else to put this thread. So I use filter floss in chamber number 1 of my sump. This is the chamber that the over flow flows into and where my active carbon, phos remover and brightwell nitrat-R is in. In this same chamber I have as much LR as I can possibly fit in. The problem I have is the floss goes brown very quickly and I travel alot (right now in the US). I have been struggling with nitrates since day one sitting between 10ppm to 25ppm.

Questions:

1. Do in really need the floss?
2. If I remove the floss and leave it as just the media (Carbon, Phos ,Nitrate) with the live rock, second chamber the skimmer and heaters and the third chamber the return pump and some more live rock. Will that work?

I think the filter floss might just be becoming the nitrate trap I can't het rid of. I don't feed a lot, I have a good stocking of fish and coral, even have a good stocking of clams which should theoretically love nitrates ....

Would like to hear what you guys think.

This skimmer is now 5 months in my system and driving me loopy, no matter what I do I just cannot get it to skim dry ??? surely by now it should be broken in ???

Tried countless options, raised and lowered water level in sump, even tried closing the silencer a little with some prestic to make finer bubbles but to no avail.

When water level sits low, I does build up but I can leave it for 2-3 days and no skimmate overflows ???

ANY input or tips would be appreciated ???

No problem in skimming wet, as seen below ???

I want to up my filtration and polish my water. I've got the skimmer, refugeum, dsb, passive carbon/phos bags; but I have a full bio-load, a tendency to over feed, and a bit of cyano in the refugeum (on the cheato) :p I was thinking of adding a canister filter. Can I run phos remover/carbon/zeolite and floss in a canister filter? What's the difference between a phos reactor and a canister filter?

While I am in the USA I might as well pick up some stuff, what donyou guys think about this bulb. In currently have normal T5 antics x2 and x2 pink Giesemann. At the moment the pink Giesemann are over powering. I just bought a 15k blueish Dynamax MH but this Gizzy looks awesome wight the light spectrum.

Whats with the fake coral

Decided to go spend the weekend in NYC before I go on business to Seattle. Last time I was in Seattle noticed a beautiful tank in a shopping mall but it had all fake coral! So now sitting in the JetBlue lounge and another beautiful tank but once again fake coral....

What is it with the fake painted coral? Is it something they do here?

Also been looking at some of the corals I can get here my word they nice went to a pet store in NYC the corals !!!!!!! Wish I could bring some back.....

I Have Religiously followed the diagram on the ballast connecting the T5 globes but still nothing happens any advise...it is a Quicktronic PROFESSIONAL t5 39W Dual Ballast..

Hi guys bought a brain coral last weekend was fine until yesterday when the power went of for 4 and a half hours. I just want to know it looks bleached and its hard,is it dead and was it because power was off for so long?because the temp only fell by 1-2 degrees in that time,

I have some zoas,polyps,kenia tree and torch coral and they seem to be fine,any advise on what could have effected this?
