Please Help with viaaqua SK-388 2

I bought this skimmer a month back installed it and yet its not forming form..
its working since 4 weeks and not forming form
im bit frustrated tried all setting but still its not working.
please help me...

my tank size abt 70 g with sump and i have only one electric damsel and some button polys
i have started tank yet so its not yet stocked much..

Ok, so I may be posted to Hong Kong with my better half (I am a house husband) and I was wondering does anyone know what the way of life is like there, or maybe even lived there? I know property prices and rentals are through the roof, but their income tax rate is only 17%. Any info would be great, might be going in six months.:thumbup:

4ft lighting unit for a 5ft tank? Or not?

Hi all, I'm wanting to purchase some lighting for my 5ft tank that I'm setting up and I just want to ask a simple question...

Should i go for a 5ft light unit or should I go for a 4ft unit as the lighting "spreads" at the sides?

It's also a good R1500 less so I'm kinda wondering... thanks!

DSB maintenance

I was completely sold on a DSB over reactors and now I'm not sure anymore. I've just been told that if you have a DSB it needs to be pulled out and redone every so often or it can turn against itself and cause problem later on. I want my new system to be simple and maintenance friendly so this would be a huge inconvenience. Is this true? Secondly would it not be simpler and easier to maintain with reactors? I already have a Phosphate and Nitrate reactor which only needed cleaning and re-packing every 6 months or so?

Guys, many corals can give us an indication, when a water parameter is running out of the norm.
This thread is to share experiences we all have with certain corals, when certain water parameter are running out of the desired level.
Target is to find similar experiences to determine a species that really can indicate a drop or rise of a certain water parameter.
So start sharing your experiences. The future should be, that we only have to test water parameter when such indicator coral shows that there is something out of the standard.

Bali polyps as the first species are good indicators for nitrate levels. As soon as the tentacles of the bali polyps become shorter, you should test your nitrate. It is climbing up. If your bali polyps have long tentacles, your nitrate level is fine. This works only if you know what bali polyps look like with no or very little nitrate. Do not expect them to work as an indicator if your tank has 25mg nitrate per litre at the time when you introduce them to your tank. ;)

Disturbing Reefkeeping Trends

I have noticed a few disturbing trends on MASA at the moment and I dont know if its a trend in general or only here on MASA. There are hobbyists keeping bleached anemones in small tanks with inadequate lighting, especially for such species as the Magnificas, not only that, they have 2 or 3 different species in less than 200 liters of water. I see comments like dont worry I am not new to reefkeeping, I know what Im doing Then reading through the thread it becomes clear to the more experienced hobbyists that you are clearly not as experienced as you think or just dont care about the live stock you are looking after. I see hobbyists trying to keep fish in Reef systems that should only be kept in species specific systems. To top it off they have the attitude of I dont expect it to live for long anyway. Conflict now arises between these reefers and the more experienced hobbyist, where the experienced hobbyist points out the mistake and the less experienced reefer now has a dented ego, so retaliates. This will eventually end up in a forum war because the long term experienced hobbyist is passionate about the animals in our care and understands that it is a privilege to be able to keep these animals, not a right. The inexperienced hobbyist now defends himself with things like MASA is full of negative posts and people are just jealous.
Guys/gals you may be able to impress friends and family in the short term with your new difficult to do hobby and you may have enough money to throw at your system every time something dies, but you cant buy credibility in this hobby, it still has to be earned in the long term. IMHO I believe that you actually dont have any bragging rights to any animal in your system if it has been in your care for less than 2yrs.
A very small percentage of hobbyists are in this hobby for the long haul, speak to your LFSs and they will tell you that about 95% of people that start the hobby will drop out before the 2yr mark, the 2 main reasons being, its too expensive and you cant keep stuff alive. For the long time hobbyists they realize that both the above are not true. Granted the initial outlay is expensive, but from there on it becomes as expensive or as difficult as you make it. This all depends on the amount of research you are prepared to do and the type of system you want to keep. So please do the research and enjoy the hobby long term. MASA is here essentially to offer advice, whether you take it or not is up to you. The quality of that advice is a educated guess at best and depends on the amount of information you are able to supply, but please dont think you blazing any trails in the hobby by keeping 10 tangs and a Magnifica in a nano just because no one else seems to do it. Lets see the results at the 2yr mark. While on this trail blazing stint, please take stock of the amount of animals you are killing along the way. If the death of these animals doesnt make you feel remorse and keep motivating you to do even more research, you are in the wrong hobby. Again please do the research and become a long term knowledgeable hobbyist, you will be surprised how relatively affordable and relatively second nature the hobby becomes.

Advice on new camera

I'm looking to buy my first DSLR and unfortunately don't have the money to buy new.

I've found a second hand Canon 450D for R2800.00. It is just the body, charger and cables. They don't know how many shutter actuations etc. Apparently it is in good condition.

Is it a good buy? Should I go for it or wait and keep looking?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Hi All

So Ive had my clam for almost a year now and he is doing well. Think its a Tridacna crocea.

So when I did my crab hunting this morning at 1am. I saw that his foot had let go of the piece of rock he came with.

Is this something to worry about or is its way of saying I want to move to somewhere else in this aquarium?
