:tt2: hello everyone my name is chris and I have a 75 gallon saltwater tank that has been up andgoing for almost 2 years now. The back wall is covered in live rock and various corals that i will find out their exact names and post them in the next thread. Ther is also 1 yellow tang, 1 clown fish, 1 picasso trigger fish, 1 6 line wrasse, 1 blue tang, and 1 spotted trigger fish. I have a canister filter rated for a 150 gal. tank with built in uv light and a reef octopus bh 200 protien skimmer.The calcium levels are kept in check with reactor that does more than its share.The lights are t5 with 2 day bulbs and 2 night bulbs.I look forward to chatting with everyone and updating when tank design or equipment changes in the set up..happy fishing
Old Fish

Old fish. What is an old fish? I am not sure but I do know that some fish live a really long time. How long? Real long, like over 20 years. I think most larger fish can live much longer than that but the small fish we normally keep seem to have a much shorter lifespan. From my experience tangs can live well into their twenties but I have never kept one longer than about 14 years. After that they seem to have accidents. Even percula clowns live over 20 years. Some types of fish have very short lifespans like seahorses and pipefish. I can not keep seahorses more then about 3 years. Of course they are probably a couple of years old when I collect them so I am not sure of their lifespan. Pipefish also, just a few years although the bluestripe I have now is about 3 or 4.
Why am I thinking about this? :1:
I think about all sorts of useless things and I just came back from a nice day on the water on my boat and as I was watching the bunker (menhaden) jump all around the boat, the thought hit me. How long do these things live?
As I look at my tank I have a watchman gobi about 5" long. He is about 12 or 13 years old and was part of a breeding pair. I got the pair when they were very young and after countless spawnings the female disappeared. I am assuming old age but fish get heart attacks, strokes, cancer and a bunch of other things. I am going with old age. I have no Idea how long watchman gobies are supposed to live but people are supposed to live to about 78 years or so. We all know that some of us die much younger and so do fish. My remaining watchman gobi is showing his age. He was very active for most of his life, scouring the bottom for food at night and coming to the glass in the daytime at feeding time. Now he kind of lays around waiting for me to squirt some food at him. When he grabs it, it is not with the same vigor that I am accustomed to seeing. He also chews for a long time before he takes another bite. Just like old people. He is clearly old and even has lines on his face. No really. I have noticed this twice before on two different fish. One was a 14 year old percula clown that was one of my first fish in the 70s and one was a 13 year old figure eight puffer that was my very first saltwater fish. He was actually bought in fresh water and then my tank was converted to brackish and then salt.
I once had a brutlyd or cusk eel who lived to 18 before I killed him in an accident. I don't remember if he had any lines but maybe his lifespan was 30 or 40 years, I don't know. :(
The watchman gobi is still very healthy and his blue spots seem like neon lights. Thats one way to tell a healthy fish, their colors seem irridescent and not dull.
My 17 year old fireclown does not seem to be showing his age as much but I can start to see the slight lines in his face and he is slowing down a bit. I also have a much younger fireclown and you can easily tell from their faces that this one is only half the age of the other one.
Now I know that fish do not age like us and they have much different skin so don't think I rub Oil of Oley on their faces but you cna definately tell an old fish from their face.

Hi fellow reefers

this mornin i noticed that one of my clown fish has a white spiderweblike substance on its body.googled it, turns out to be brooklynella or something.
my advisor at the lfs gave me myxazin said to add directly into tank twice a day.no need for qt.
does anyone know if this is the best solution?
also how do i get my fire shrimp to clean my fish?:blush:

any help app....thanx.

Hi,

The three pics below are of this unknown plant growth in my tank.
I have about 15 sea sponges growing and all of a sudden this.
There are some starting to grow on various places on my LR.
Please help.

Full shot. Only circulation is 1500L/h powerhead on the left. Water pumped from main sump enter on right at the back. Outlet is skinny overflow centre back. Outlet too small to accept more inflow from tank above(inlet on left back)

Rock nest on the left. Things needs a home to hide and do their thing out of sight.

To all divers.

I'm looking for some information about the cleaner shrimp, Lysmata ambionensis.
Where are they living in the sea? How many individuals are the norm? As pairs or a groups?
Pictures would be really appreciated.

Guys, I googled myself through such a lot of marine forums worldwide and I have to say that we are here on MASA very spoiled.
The whole forum set up, sub-forums, etc. is way better than on any other forum.
Many forums are having a very senseless index and it takes a lot of time to find what you are looking for.

Hi guys

I have made a decision to get out of reefing for the time being. I will come back fighting no doubt, but time spent with my family is being taken up by this so I wanna put that on the back burner for now

My tank resembles a LFS more than a reef as most of you know so its gonna be tough getting pics of everything especially the ones in the back, so i will put up pics and prices of some of the items. When people collect we can haggle about the other ones in the tank. For now all the coral, then later the fish, then the rock and then the equipment. Please dont ask for shipping as I am not going to be doing that, collection ONLY. I have various items of various sizes, ranging from R50 up to R600 for the big stuff, and here is a short list of some off them. Other stuff include green, red, blue shrooms.

Hey guys, I have hake roe for sale. R75 per kg

Great to feed corals, fish and anemones. I feed it to my fish, LPS and mini nennies. I hear its good for fussy eaters like anthias and angels (not going to name names here :P)

I get this hake roe fresh and then freeze it. There is no additives, none at all. 1kg is a lot! I can pack how much you want as I have a scale (certified ;))

PLease advise on what to do...
Yesterday everything super eating like normal, this morning when swithed on the lights on Predator tank, the Lionfish seemed blind but swimming around now, although there is a milky layer forming over his eyes and his behaviour is a bit off...
What is it, what can i do?
