Hi, I am very new to all this and still pretty confused. I have taken over my son's 5 year old tank and a new algae is growing. It is very fine, hairlike, soft, long, wavy and very hard to remove off the rocks. Someone told me it might be an Turtle weed. If it is, am I supposed to keep that algae or should clean it out?

Hi Guys,
having a bit of a mozzie issue at the moment....
my tank is in my room and i want to put a doom mozzie mat burner on to repel the mozzies. :whistling:
my question is this, is it safe to do so or will the tank absorb some of the toxins in the air?

Does anyone know where I can get the housing/ballast that holds the quad lamp in the above nano? Or even if you know of another 50/50 CF light and housing that I could use? I'm looking to use that lighting system in my nano build. -

Hey everyone .... So I been monitoring my clams for the past few days, an they seem a bit retracted, I checked everything and all was fine.... Lasnight while prepping their food, I caught my cleaner in action,peckin on both my clams, can that be the reason for retracting? .... Also, I never seen him clean a fish since I have him, when they approach him, he swims away, could it be he is a false cleaner? Also he is a feisty mysis and brine shrimp eater.... Help please, its impossible to catch him out of tank, what to do, what to do -

Well as the name suggests, I've been considering setting up a Blackberry Group for some time now. Anyone who doesn't have a BlackBerry but would like to to be notified of events are welcome to join too, if you're willing to exchange numbers on "Whatsapp"
The idea is to get some feedback first, before doing anything but I'm thinking it should have the following criteria:
1) No BRAND NEW newbs. So at least 100 posts.
2) This will not be an advice based group. MASA is to be strictly used for that. It will be a purely imformational, networking-based, social group - so if you wanted to get together for a dive, collecting, tank visit, braai hosting, or even just a beer then you'd send a message.

Cheap DIY chiller idea

No this isn't a new idea at all, but I thought that I'd share this with all of you. I found this little fridge and what I think sets it apart is the fact that it also runs off of battery power. Meaning that if you had a battery powered pump, then you could effectively also keep your tank cool if there was no electricity for a while. I'm sure that the electrical geniuses will be able to shed some more light on anything I'm missing.

Essentially the idea is to have the following:
-Bar fridge
-long plastic pipe
-pump
-thermostat (if you're not at home to keep an eye on things)
You would place the pump with thermostat switch, in your sump, attached to one end of the pipe. You would drill an entrance hole in the side of the fridge for the pipe to go into and create many coils in the fridge with the pipe and drill another hole for the pipe to exit back out, into your sump. Simple as that. Hope you like the idea. -

Need urgent assistance/advise.
My tank has taken a nose dive in the last week. It started with my torch coral that died in one day and pulsing xenias not doing so well and they are shrinking. I have just seen my urchin looks like it died this morning. Left him just in case he was just resting will check tonight when I get home. All the fish are okay and looks healthy. The protein skimmer is just producing white foam. It is a TS2. It normally take about 5 days to but the last week I have had to empty it every second day now.
It gives off the usual green sludge but with white foam on it.
It is also full of Cyno
My tank is about 640 Lt including sump.
My water temp is a bit high at 27.5 c
Ammonia = 0.01
Nitrite = 0.00
Nitrate = 50 ppm
Phosphate = above 5ppm
Alk = 2.83
dHK = 8.7
PH = 8.5
salinity = 1.024
I have been dosing stability, seachem 8.4 , seachem alpha. I also have seachem phosguard pellets as well charcoal running in the tank.
Just can't figure out what went wrong and how to fix this. I have recently done a 200lt water change. that did nothing for the tank -

Yeah....as the title says. During feeding this morning, Morris just chilled in his corner, he usually dashes for the mussel but not this morning, even after adding the other frozen food he showed no interest at all.
So I sat around the tank for about 15mins studying him the noticed that his butt was...... hmmmmmm.... how can I best describe this...? Looked like a bottle necked road block! I could see the k@k but it wasn't coming out!!:P it (his bung hol) was probably stretched to about 4-6mm:eek:
Should I intervene or let nature take its course? -

Hi guys
How difficuilt are dwarf seahorses to keep?
What's the minimum sized tank I can use?
Are normal salinities fine for them?
How long do they live?
This is what I know so far and I want to learn more before taking the plunge, so any thoughts and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
I know they dont like flow and need something to cling onto like macroalgae or artificial "plants". They only eat newly hatched brineshrimp as the food is small enough. No mechanical filtration is needed as you want to keep the brine shrimp circulating in the tank for them to feed the all the time. I will however do water changes with my main display daily to keep nutrients down. Lighting is not important but they do need a day night cycle. No other corals, aiptasia, hydroids or majano in the tank as these can sting and kill them. Three or four of them can be kept in the tank.
Is there anything I have left out?
