Hey guys/gals,
Tested my Iodine today with a Salifert test kit (New).
I'm a bit freaked out because I'm unable to detect Iodide nor Iodate.
Both tests show up as crystal clear and that includes the 2 part test of iodate. Am I missing something or can it be possible? I changed over to a new tank 2 weeks ago so lots of fresh salt mix went into the system. I have however added quite a few sps pieces and I do have a huge caulerpa farm which I have read could obsorb iodine.
I would have believed the test if I didn't add all the new salt mix about 2 weeks ago but can't believe that it could have been absorbed that fast.
I can't really tell if corals have less colour because my water is a bit cloudy from a biopellet bacterial bloom. My shrimps have beem extra shy though and haven't seen any of them molt in awhile now.
Advice? (Got a bottle of Brightwells Iodine on hand).

Hi Submariner
i was going to email, but i thought this Q might help a view reefers
I am setting up a 1200x800x500 SPS reef tank, and its going to be 3 sides viewable so the SPS and rock will be in the center of the tank about 700x400 foot print, what is the light dispersal on the ILLUMILUX range, would one ILLUMILUX 1200 be sufficient as the main light across the center of the tank 15cm above or 2 x ILLUMILUX 900 over the center,
thanks

Hey guys
I've been reading up on DSBs a lot lately.
now from what I understand is that DSBs need quite a bit of surface area to be effective(numbers like 400x500mm min come to mind).
Looking at my stand and proposed cabinet this might not be possible.
Is there an alternative to a DSB that would have the same or nearly the same effect?
Cheers

Hi all.
i have been part of the forum for some time , and appreciate all the input that goes into the site.
while there is a wealth of info , i feel there is too much for someone to take in as a beginner , and this is the reason i have put this hobby off for so long.
i think too much info , makes people scared ( as i was) and very hesitant to start the hobby.
while many people in the fish hobby realize it is a constant drain on the wallet, together with a whole lot of other problems, i must admit , the forum put the fear of god in me to start , especailly since many people make you think this is rocket science.
i have chatted to many people , while picking up quality second hand equipment , and they all seem to say it isnt that difficult.
so i am on my way to starting my tank , but getting all my hardware and stuff now, getting my tank cycled and then will start with livestock next year.
i have taken good warning , not to be in any rush, at all.
i have many questions , that i have picked up from reading various post the forum , and to find final answers is difficult, as i guess everyone and there setup is unique.
so my first question is - dosing or Reactors.
the reason why i am asking , is that with many large tanks you see on the forum, the setups are with large reactors , co2 bottles and charmers to run , a hundred million different things.
my tank at the moment , is a 1.8m x 70cm x 70 , with 1.5 m sump and eventually this setup will get bigger (obviously).
i wanted to know do you invest in reactors and stirrers , or go , the dosing route and invest in say a profilux doser .
i wanted to know the pros and cons of each method.
thanks in advance to anyone who participates.

Hey guys,
I've collected about 10 different types zoas from orange to pink, green, blue, silver, lime, rainbow and some with different color centres.. and I have frags!
I'm really into trying to expand my diversity and color spectrum, so I'm appealing to any other zoalovers to do a frag swop with me.
I am not really wanting to trade any currency at all, so am only willing to sell zoas for zoas! It will also be on a shipping only basis.. unless you stay close to knysna! Dont stress because they ship really well via the post office's speed services. I usually ship this WY it absolutely no hassles!
I am truly hunting zoas in the range of yellow, red and blue.
Looking forward to some swopping... woohoo:thumbup:!

I am busy looking for pumps to run my skimmer and to pump the water back to the DT.
I phone this one store ( not a pet shop ) and the guy told me it is illegal to place pumps under water. :confused1:
The guys solution was to use a small swimming pool pump to pump the water back to the DT.
I guess it was a mistake to tell this to my father as he is now very skeptical.
:please:
So if anyone can shine some light on this issue it will be appreciated ...

Hi Guys,
Urgently looking for a refractometer, would be cool if there is someone in cape town selling.

I Purchased a Polario 22000L Wave Pump about a Year and a half ago..
So far this has been my Adventure:
First 2 months of having it Control unit Melted causing major fumes killing a hellova lot of Livestock:dft004:
Supplier replaced with another unit... after a bit of a wait..
This unit was not happy to be alive, went for a week and stopped..
Waited a few months for replacement unit this worked for about 3 months!
....NICE!!!:banghead:
I was fed up with this by now so I asked a friend (Qualified Sparky!) to take a gander and see what's going on in the drive unit and actual pump..
Pump fine, he Reckoned motherboard couldn't handle pump load, tried fixing unit, no luck...
Then took it to a guy that fixes all things electronic and he definately said problem is the small fan that supposed to cool drive unit gets faulty..
Added a new fan resolded motherboard wires... plugged it in and wow
worked perfectly... FOR 5 MINUTES!!!
All in all about 2 years later with a wave pump that has worked for about 5 months!!!
Please tell me someone has had this problem...
And where the hell can I get a good drive unit for this pump:whistling:

Light has been running about 3 days. Will it work?

Piece 3.
Piece 4. (I'm aware of the bleached tips, got it like that this weekend) (Ignore the velvet horn)
Piece 5.
Then there are some plates(green and orange) and a moon(purple and green one). Thats about it in regards to sps.
I've Identified most of them, I think :whistling: but would really like to hear your personal experiences in regards to their care.
Last but not least, found this little bugger nibbling away at one of the colonies. ID?

Hey peeps, I work in the fishing industry and as the season ends I now see more and more different fish being caught in the net. Sometimes a few weird ones too, I recently saw a tan color fish which was about 8-10mm round/thick but as long as my arm with a mouth probably the length of my forearm.
As of late a lot of Rays and small Sharks came through, probably feeding.
-
hi guy
I want to upgrade my fish tank to acrylic. 1200*600*500 (10mm) or 1200*600*600(12mm),any thought or information.
Did anyone have company to make the carylic fish tank in cape town?
-
Now and again I notice a spot or two on my purple tang, never really a lot of white spot. I am moving to a new tank much bigger than the current tank.
I was wondering with the moving of the tank is there a way to time the white spot hatching etc and not using the current water to take this as an opportunity to clear white spot out of my tank.
I was planning on using my current substrate but if I have to I will turf that too, as long as I can get rid of the white spot I am happy :)
Thanks for the advise.
-
I came home to find one of my anthias on the floor dead :(, I have been doing some reading and they don't seem to be the jumping type of fish. I know right now the tank is getting crowded and the chromis are acting wierd (think they want to breed) as well as the freeken agressive six line.
I wanted to know:
1. Are Anthias known to jump?
2. Could it be the Chromis or Six Line chasing them that caused him to jump?
-
So I am busy setting up my new tank 1.2 x 800 deep and 600 high.
Looking at my stocking for fish, I currently have in my current tank:
x.1 Clown (tank bread 90% black)
x5 Chromis
x1 mandrin
x1 scooter
x1 Lawnmower (obese man he is fat)
x1 Purple tang
x3 Anthias
x1 Six line
x2 blue dot sand sifters
I am looking at adding a Shoal Tang (baby) - on it's way.
x3 or 4 Yellow tangs
I then have an option
either
x2 FULL black clowns
PLUS
x2 Picaso Clowns
OR just the blacks or just the Picasos
I already have the x1 90% tank bread black clown (which is my fav and first fish).
I wanted to know is there a limit to the amount of clowns in the tank? Can I have the five clowns and will they co exist together? I am currently treating the poor clown for being chowed on his fins I suspect either the stupid chromis or the Six line wrass.
Just want to get some advise, I know the Shoal Tang is aggressive but he is going to (hopefully) be a baby and the tank seems to be big enough for all of them.
I would appreciate the advise.

Hello all.
Ive had a beatyfull 18cm magnificent fox fo about 2 months now. Last week Friday I bought a nice blonde naso tang thats about 11cm big.
The blonde doesnt want to eat and is skinny. Now Ive got 2 questions. Firstly can it be because of the foxface? They dont seem to fight and they swim together, but the fox does seem to show signs of dominance over him. Secondly, I feed formula 1 and formula 2 flakes, green and red nori and formula 2 and some other frozen food, in short a huge variety of different foods. What else can I so or give the guy to get him to eat. Please everybody, I really dont want to loose this nice blonde and its been almost a week now. Oh yeh, if someone wants to know, the tank volume is 700l.

Hi Guys and Girls
In conjunction with our friends at Idol Marine,We are proud to offer the following to our Cape Town friends ;)
EVA3 with Controller
R3,990.00
An Introduction
•The EVAporative cooler is a new range of cooling equipment based on evaporation rather than current refrigerative cooling technology.
•The EVO3 displayed uses 13W of power and is rated to cool a 1000l tank under normal inland conditions. This is comparable to a 1 HP chiller which draws 1000W.Cape conditions should perform as well ;)
•The power savings are obvious as are the EVO range’s eco-credentials and major savings to your pocket.
•A 1000W chiller running 12 hours a day costs around R500/month.
•The EVA3 is under R10/month.
Other Benefits.
•Increased dissolved oxygen levels and Redox levels.
•As evaporation is increased, a kalk-stirrer becomes a far more effective dispenser of calcium and alkalinity thus lessening or dispensing with the need for a calcium reactor.
•The cooler can be fully self-controlled as in the display unit or can be externally controlled via an aquarium computer.

Hi there so my tank is covered with brown algea all over the sand and live rock so bad that my polyps on some places doesn't want to open.
So yes I've read about to much nutrients but I've tested my phosphates is at 0.1 and my nitrate at 0.5.
Is that the problem?
2 things I've thought of is I only have a small np reactor with 250ml pellets in for a 600 litre tank is that maybe not enough?
The other thing is when I started the tank I bought live rock from a guy who battled with the same type of algea, did it maybe carry over to mine?
I'm runnig carbon also, any help will be appreciated

Just thought I would share the picture of who is sitting high up on the throne in my tank and seems to be the "king of this castle" He sits high up in the tank inside a shell i put up just for him. :)
Who said size matters????? Anyone can be king. LOL
Post some pics of who is in charge in your tank, it would be interesting to see.

Hi all,
My fav fish in the entire tank (my first fish bought by my GF as a present) developed some fin rot. My tank bread 90% black clown ;)
At first I thought it was because he started growing up and hosting in the new torch I added. So thought maybe he was getting nailed by the torch. But it progressively got worse, first the bottom then the top fin(s).
I managed to catch him on Sunday (what a 25min mission) and reallocated him to a my little baby nano that I have had running. He wasn't to pleased yesterday and didn't want to eat, today he mashed anything that I put in the tank so he is back to his normal habits of eating (in the nano this time) once again :thumbup:
I have a few questions there for you guys:
1. The little nano (did a 80% water change before I added the little clown) has a sump with filter floss, some LR, some bio balls etc. - Is this ok? The reason I ask is that a lot of the medicine I have been reading about says turn OFF your filtration???
This leads into my second question:
2. If I turn OFF my filtration I have a baby flow pump in the nano and I am told to add some aeration i.e. s air pump. I heard that a air pump in the sump is  but a air pump in the MAIN DT (in this case the Nano where the clown is now) is :eek::eek:.
So the question: Can I turn the filtration to the SUMP - OFF add a air pump to the main DT of the nano and keep the flow pump going?
3. I have read about a lot of different medicine and not to keen on destroying my Nano etc in the Nano (it's the clown and a poor lonely hermit crab). I DON'T want to use a copper based treatment if I can actually help it. What are the treatments available for things like fin rot out there?
I would appreciate the help guys as I figure out how to treat the little bugger and get him back to action in the main tank.
Thank you all for the help.

Hi, I am getting back into the marine hobby after about 10 years, lots of moving around caused that. Now i have finally setup another marine system, it consists of 7 tanks, all plumbed into the sump. One is setup as a quarantine tank. Then others are for livestock. Total quantity is about 500 lt. The protein skimmer is a counter current diy version. I have a 5000 lt/h return pump. Currently all i have are four mollies in the system. Now all i need is to put in some livestock. Can anyone advise me on a good supplier who can ship some nice fish to me. I live in Ladysmith, KZN and there isn't a marine supplier anywhere near here. Thanks for this great forum.
Heres a pic of the system right now. Still setting up the algae scrubber. Everything else is up and running.

Im interested to know of what level of importance do people think live/dead rock is to you setting up your reef aquarium? Lets say a rating from 1-10.
I think this is a very important topic to discuss for newbies. I find so many people spend thousands on filtration and lighting then take a short cut when acquiring or aquscaping their rock. Also what are peoples thoughts on using Kenya live rock? I personally think it is a tank killer....:020:

What a weekend, woke Saturday to my power hammer with a spot of brown jelly on it. I lost a baby torch my GF bought me as a present about month ago. So I siphoned off as much as I could. Woke up today and bam more brown jelly. I took the coral out after having to dislodge it from its prately putty. Gave it a strong dip for 3 minutes and put it back.
Lets see how it goes this was one of my fav corals  I also had to QT my clown which has been with me since day one he somehow got fin rot. Busy treating him in a QT right now.:mad::mad:
Parameters are perfect other coral and fish are healthy sigh hope its just something temporary!!!!!! :banghead::banghead::banghead:

PROUD SUPPORTER OF IDOL MARINE
Hi everyone...
Ive been a marine fan for the past 2 years although ive only had boyu tanks.
Recently ive been thinking about going bigger and i finally decided to build a shallow reef. I knew absolutely nothing about setting up a tank with a sump. I didnt know what equipment to buy, how to set it up, absolutely nothing...
Ive been to quite a bit of marine stores, not only to look for equipment but also to get info on the marine world and how i should go about doing starting this beautiful hobby. Yes a lot of people gave me their advice (which i really appreciate) but i could not have started without the help of my favourite MARINE STORE - IDOL MARINE.
Ive been visiting IDOL MARINE for about 3 months and ive learnt so much from them. Not only are they friendly and welcoming, they are also experts at what they do. Good advice was always passed on with a happy smile even though i wasnt a supporter at the time.
I would recommend IDOL MARINE TO ANYONE and EVERYONE who are or want to be reefers.
ROB and especially LUIS ALVES, from me and your fellow supporters, thank you for all the advice and help.
We really appreciate it

Hey guys! I would like to know if there are green hornet zoanthids growing on the KZN's coast line. The reason I am asking is because I found something like this (Pic below) on Toti beach, but its mouth is green with much more tentacles and only the tips are green. I will try to post a proper pic of them tomorrow.

so while i have been building my new tank and thinking about how i am going to scape a 3 side viewable SPS reef i thought to my self, is it worth the effort???
my view is a pile of rocks with good flow through it would suffice since the ultimate goal is to have your corals grow crazy and cover everything

Can someone please comment on these "types" of "sand" ...are they any better than what we currently have or is there no real difference...just a "general discussion"...not all of them, but some of the smaller grain sand and the Bio-Active Live Sand...I'm asking about the quality of the Sand and not the fact that you can add Fish with no waiting period...I still personally wouldn't do it...

Hey all,
I bought a Reef Octo OCTX-160 from a fellow reefer but thanks to sapo it came to me with a broken "leg". What glue do you suggest I use to fix it? I took it to Maizeys today but they have no idea what it is.
To top it off, I dropped the lid and broke a chunk of it off - Maizeys sold me some stuff called "Tensol no. 12" to fix it. Anybody know if it's reef-friendly?
They said that I shouldn't use it on the leg as it wouldn't work and that I'd be wasting my time if I tried....
Anybody have any better ideas?

.
Setting up my Aquaria 2m Aquarium
Unpacked the boxes and there we go. What an awesome looking Aquarium
What makes this Aquarium so nice is the neat finishes and the complete idea of a plug and play system is so user friendly.

Had to do a test to make sure there was no leaks as didnt want to set up in the house only to find a leak or two
..but no problems found
100% in order time to move it to the lounge and start setting up
lots of work and time went into the setting up and the Aqua scapeing of my Aquarium
And
here was the result
now see how nice it fits in , got to say it again its really nicely finished.
Here is a quick peep at the filtration in my Aquaria 2m Aquarium

And my Aqua Scapeing

well now it was time to start waiting and deciding what to put in
hmm decisions decisions
.
Anyway reefers so I ran the system as I should and waited for the cycle to pass
went through all the different stages and Im happy to now show you all the result of doing things properly and with care and not forgetting using a really nice plug and play system
.AND DONT FORGET This Hobby demands patience
and a lot of it

Hey guys! I'd like 2 know If I need a heater for local specimens in Durban. I collect all my specimens locally here in Durban/Amanzimtoti. My Pico reef's temperature fluctuates between 22C-24C, but is mostly at 24C. I fear that If I increase the temperature I might kill all my coral, macroalgae, zoanthids etc. Any advice will be sufficient.

Hi,
On a recent visit to a local hardware I saw this Tank available at the fraction of the price availbale @ a lfs.
Are there any mods available for this tank i.t.o lighting, plumbing etc.
I plan on buying one for the office for a FWT as this is what they are designed for, however I would like to buy one for myself if they can be used as a marine tank, provided the lighting can be modded to house zoas n shrooms, if additional filtration is required i could try and plumb a mini sump behind it. I hold aboutl 40lt of water.
Any one currently using these tanks for nanos.
-
Hi all,
Just to help anyone who has a jbj nano cube. I have been battling recently to purchase my 36W Compact 50/50 blue/White bulbs for my Nano 24G from the LFS, so after some searching came across JBJ USA and they were able to send me two from crazy price of $19,79 each and shipping was $8.99, took about 15 working days. Normally prefer to support LFS but being in Durban none of them had any, and phoned a few others in Joburg and some said they were not getting them in, so had to resort to looking elsewhere. Here is link :
36 Watt Power Compact Bulbs .
They also are able to upgrade you lighting if need be, and sell other replacement parts.
Anyway hopes this helps those in need:yeahdude:

Is it posible to get a hitchhiker Goniopora?
Best pick I can get, it is encrusting with a hard skeleton. Small tubes with "flower" heads. To small to count the tentacles.
Started as a speck, now about a 50c size at its base and has formed a small dome.

Hi guys in looking for coral frags in Durban
Please let me know if you have any and prices please

Hey guys
We recently received this crayfish, abalone and oyster tank from one of our suppliers. The problem is that it looked o.k for a month or 2 but is now looking terrible and is a sight for sore eyes. I originally wanted nothing to do with it but am now forced to intervene.
its around 2.2m in length, 600mm wide and 600mm deep but sloping to around 350mm.
its designed to be shallower on the one end so the oyster will be easier to reach. One problem,we sell like 200+ oysters and loads of crayfish over a weekend so there are loads of hands in and out the tank.
Heres some posts of what this ugly thing looks like. It could be quite a fun challenge to get this thing looking like something.
What the tank looks like. Those ugly fake corals came as an added bonus. That is a big artificial dead rock(doubt it has had any live on it when it was added). That sock is for the water coming out of the skimmer and I want to change it to catch the gunk that comes out of the overflow, and believe me crayfish are messy and I think oysters are even worst. We dont feed the tank at all. There is a big spunge that collects crap from the overflow(want to add a sock instead of the spunge). the return to the chiller is 2500 l/h.
This is just to show how the tank slopes
Spray bar(if you can call it that) returns water back to the tank. It causes alot of salt creep though.
this is where we put our oyster.its normally full but they didnt look very appetising in a tank full of algae.
pic of bottom of skimmer
main sump chamber. Return pump is rated for 4800l.skimmer is rated for unknow litres as theres nothing written on skimmer.
big black spunge collect nutrients,:whistling:
and dirty bio balls.

Hey guys.
Ive been looking on the net for answers but cant get a conclusive answer.
My finger coral has got a shiny layer over it. I have found that it might be stress,to much flow, too little flow, that it does it to protect itself or that its growing.
Hopefully you guys can tell me if it is something to worry about.
here some pics of what it looks like
thanks

Hi all,
I'm going on my long awaited return trip to the Transkei coast in December. Staying at the Anchorage and White Clay. As I'm making the trip from Cape Town, I'd like to make it as worth worth while as possible and visit as many cool spots as possible. So if anyone knows of a good spot or 5 to snorkel for specimens, I'd appreciate some info.
Thanks,
Tim

So after 3 years in the hobby i finally got the tank i've always wanted...After doing a mojar Marine Roadtrip this past weekend, i have all equip i wanted, thanks to all the sellers ;)
New System will be Full Reef mostly softie dominated and LSP as i like the movement... couple of tangs and some small fish to just keep it balanced.
New Display Tank Dimension :
120cm x 60cm x 70cm high black silicone, slim overflow (apparently built by Idol Marine?)
Sump with 3 chambers: 1st custom mechanical filter container into bio rock mix and cheato , 2nd skimmer, carbon and purigen, return chamber....forth chamber on side for top up RO water....
Newer model TS3 skimmer with original pump, works like a beast!
Aqua Medic Lighting Pendant with 1 x 250W MH and 2 x T5 Actinics suspended roughly 20cm above waterlevel
About 60kg mixed liverock in DT and 10kg in sump...
Keep the advice rolling:thumbup:

I have 2 tanks my little cube ( my gem tank) and my std 1.2.
The cube is running zeo and the 1.2 is running NP.
Now the Problem,
This tank crashed in the beggingng of April this year. After the crash i cleaned everything propperly and put it back.
Ever since then my No3 and Po4 has been sky high. i have been running 250ml of pellets for 4weeks now and still no result. i am affraid that if i don't do something about it that i am heading for another crash.
i am using Salifret test kits that aren't old, i use the same kits on both tanks one is a ULNS and that it shows.
No3 100 ( it is a serious dark pink)
Po4 >1
How can i reduce this, as i do religious water changes every week of 25L

Hi All,
I am currently building a new tank and sump
dt 1000x600x500H with 1mm crushed coral bed(2cmdeep) (slim overflow C2C with built in returns from Idol Marine)
sump 850x348x450 with seperate 850x150x500high RO reservoir tank
ts2 skimmer otp2000 pump 348x250
dsb 400x348 18cm deep with sugarfine aragonite
Return section 200x348
2x Haliea 6540 pumps plumbed independantly to the 2 return sections in the skinny overflow
Reef tank
60kg Kenya live rock that has matured in my old tank for 18months with palys and zoas and mushrooms on it.
Livestock currently:
1 volitans lion fish that leaves my damsels alone . .....yay
1 vagabond butterfly that only seems to eat brine and aiptasia....yay
2 yellow tailed blue damsels
1 coral beauty that leaves my coral alone....yay
7 hermits assorted
10 snails assorted
1 pencil urchin
My old tank crashed about seven months ago leaving me with no fish and 10% of my corals alive..... whilst away on holiday the overflow (reef octo siphon overflow) drew air and stopped overflowing and my sump dried out and the DT cooked under the MH taking my water temp. to 34 degrees........not so yay. So After licking my wounds and letting my tank tank cycle untouched for 6 months this is the new plan.
Now I would like some advise as far as reactors....
I would like to add a carbon reactor and a kalk stirrer.
Is this the best plan?
how would you do it given the new tank specs above?
any guidance would be welcome.

Hi
Over the weekend I bought three female anthias. After acclimatising' them i put two in and then the last one. as i was putting the third one in the fish net got stuck in his mouth after a min or two we managed to get it out. problem is i dont know which one got stuck, anyway the one (i think she is one that got stuck) has been sitting on a rock hiding since i put her in. she doesnt come out to eat at all, she looks like she is breathing abit heavy. she did move earlier and she kinda looked 'dirty' had marks or something on her body. What should I do? Can anthias get white spot?
Thanks

Hey guys and gals.
I'm starting out and I need a few things to get going.
At the moment I need:
1x Skimmer(for a 270l tank, but as large as the budget will allow)
1x Sump(Preferably 3ft)
1x T5 Ballast
1x UV Sterilizer(not really necessary, but still nice to have)
If you have anything else that you feel I might need, let me know
I'm hoping to find these in PE, but if not I'm more than willing to pay for postage
I'm out of town until Saturday, but after that we can do business
Let me know if you have anything
Cheers

I bought 3 Energy Saver Lams today at the shop to use here at the bush for outside lights.
They are 45w Philips ECOTONE Lights. IT says on the side of the box:
Ultra bright solution for Professional use
Light output in Lumen = 3000
More energy saving in Efficiency (Lm/W) = 67
Better color in Color Rendering index = 80
Wide color in Kelvin = 6500
Fast Ignition = 1-2
Anyone know anything about these lights??
Can they be used in Marine Tanks??

Hey guys and gals
I need some advice with my stand. I want to have something built that is strong and at the same time allows me to have as big a sump as possible.
The tank dims are 1000x600x450, so it takes 270L
I was thinking doing a angle-iron frame covered in wood panelling.
My question in if I use standard 16mm angle, would it be strong enough to have just 4 feet or should I add 6 feet(3 in front and 3 in the rear)?
Also, what would a good height be? The tank is 600mm high, so I was thinking the stand should be 900mm high from the floor.
Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers
SP :)

Getting into this hobby was easy for me. My family owned a seafood business and I grew up playing with dead fish so it was natural for me to start a tank. Of course at 2 or 3 years old I needed a little help.
On fridays my Dad would bring me to the Fulton Fish Market in Manhattan which was the place that supplied seafood for all of New York.
The place was huge and the ships would dock there and the fish would be off loaded right into the street. There would also be huge sea turtles that were (unfortunately) destined to become soup.
Anyway, every once in a while in that mountain of fish you would find some small animal still alive like a crab, shrimp or even a seahorse.
My Dad would let me take those animals home and put them in some water. I only had fresh water so nothing lived more than a few hours but at least I got a taste of how amazing it was to actually take a living piece of the ocean and transport it to my home where I would stay up all night watching and probably trying to feed it.
I had more luck with the freshwater animals like catfish, eels and diamond back terripins. At least I could keep those animals alive.
In those days even a lot of the common freshwater fish we have now were not for sale.
I remember my facination when ever I would go to an aquarium store and see something new. Fish were originally sold in toy stores and called "toy fish"
There were no strictly aquarium stores because even the freshwater hobby was not common before WW2.
There were also no plastic bags so fish came in those little cardboard containers that Chinese take out places sell rice in.
When saltwater fish came out in 1971 I was in total awe and the only fish were blue devils. Imagine seeing a blue devil when for my entire life the only blue fish I ever saw was a blue gourami or a neon tetra. Blue devils blew my mind and I had to have them.
I would sit for hours starring at them just as I did when I was a todler looking at a dying crab in a glass of fresh water.
To this day I am still facinated by anything from the sea, especially something that I have never seen before. Thats the main reason I started SCUBA diving, that and finding lobsters. Now, at my age I have seen just about everything you can see related to the hobby but I still frequent stores in the hope I will find something new.
In a store I don't look at the dozens of yellow tangs, the schools of surgeon fish or the angels, I look behind the rocks and in sumps for the rare specimin that came in with other things and no one knows exactly what to call it. That is what I am looking for.
I have a few fish in my tank now that I don't know what they are and they are my favorites.
I am even more facinated by crustaceans. I put on my magnifying glasses and check out the shellfish (yes I look very wierd, it's a good thing I am married because this behaviour does not attract a lot of supermodels)
Hermit crabs are extreamly cool, they go to great lengths to get to obscure places looking for food even though they would probably do better just sitting on the bottom.
They hang up side down and seem to be struggling just to stay put. But I can see where they are coming from, we humans scale mountains just for the fun of it and do wierd things to attract a mate. They are such facinating creatures and so much more advanced than we are in certain traits.
I still have no idea how they find food but they find it all and never make a mistake. I have a bunch of them, I don't know how many but if I drop in a few pellets or a piece of clam and I see it on the gravel, in about 10 seconds I see all the hermit crabs change direction and head for the food. It will most likely be gone when they get there but how do thay do it? I doubt they see very well and the water in the tank is swirling all over the place. How do they know what direction it is? It goes right over my head and this is the stuff that keps me up at night.
I am amazed by all of this stuff. Why don't fish crash into the glass? It's their lateral line system but imagine having a radar system like that. A school of tangs can instantly dive into a stand of acropora coral and not one of those fish will get a scratch.
Maybe it's me but I love this stuff.
How do you people feel about this hobby?

Hi,
I've found tank and equipment for sale, I've asked for more details on it but the following info I have:
4ft Marine Tank
2 compartment sump
2 x powerheads
Lid with 2 x blue and 2 x white lights and plug timer
Julbo Protein Skimmer
Water heater
Floating Thermometer / Specific Gravity Salinity
Canister Filter
Pump
Chemicals / supplements / pipes etc
As a 'starter kit' does this look good, how much would something like this go for?
Thanks

How well does your sponges grow?
If you have good growth of sponges in your tanks, please let me know and also if you attribute it to anything you dose/ or do.
(not the little white q-tip/calcerous sponges though)

After more than 3yrs of being out of the hobby (FOWLR) I have decided to start afresh on a mixed reef. Took me ages to come up with with what I presume to be a perfect setup for me, borrowing from ideas I have read in the threads over the past couple of weeks.
Tank Specs:
1300 X 650 X 600 (H) 550 (WL) 10mm Glass Euro Braced, currently on hold as I cant seem to find Den Braven Aqua Black Silicone in Durban. Tank will have a C2C with a bean animal overflow (thanks Dallas) (Still to meet with AOR on the workings of this).
Sump Specs:
1200 X 550 X 450 (H) 300 (WL) 6mm Glass and a huge DSB. My experience with marines is rather old school and after reading up on tank builds such as Adees who has gone back to DSB's has somewhat reassured me that I may not be doing things too old fashioned. I was considering a LR filled sump but my understanding is that I will have LR in my DT to do some filtration. Sump will be a standard three compartment sump (thanks Riaan) that will hold a NW200 Reef Octupus Skimmer, DSB with macros or an algea scrubber (pending GHA problems), 4800l/h Lifetech pump and Reef Octupus Phosban Reactor (I had issues with GHA in the past, traced it back to poor maintenace and odd tap water top offs. New system will be toped of with R.O. Kalk Stirrer on hold pendind setup.
Lighting:
2 X Dual 4ft Oddysea Light fixtures, didnt go quad as I planned on adding 2 150w MH from previous tank if I required. May get my hands on a complete light fixture with MH and a chiller, will see in the near future.
Circulation:
1 X MP10 which after seeing operate am rather skitish if this will be enough flow, if not will order another MP10W and a bluetooth kit for the MP10 to sync them or possibly a wave box. (thanks Afsal for allowing me to view your setup)
I am aiming at an easy to maintain mixed reef with easy to keep softies and LPS (will be going through Dallas's beginner corral list agian when im ready.
I consider myself a newb as I have no understanding on dosing trace elements and will be bugging you guys on every litle aspect from choice of fish to corals to dosing etc.
My must have's i.t.o of fish is a Powder Blue Tang , Bangai Cardinals, Clowns (nemo) and possibly a Regal, if the pros feel my tank is too small or my equipment is ineffieceint please shoot me down now before I make any mistakes.
To date I have built the sump and pics will follow shortly.

Hello people
I'm just thinking, has anyone come across a TL450 with the top rim and bottom base plastic removed? This would basically make this tank a rimless one. Just a thought...
Also, I highly doubt that the rim provides any support to the glass. I may be wrong and it might just be a form of bracing...
Eb! :)

Hi
I'm new here, I hail from the windy city.
I've been lurking for the past year or so, but after seeing a friends lovely 1000l setup over the weekend I have decided to register.
Hopefully with your help I'll piece together something that would someday resemble a marine tank
For now I'm just happy to read up on articles and browse through the awesome pics on the here forum

Good Day All
Can you please comment on the following specifications for a LED strip! Apparently these lights are now being used at the main coral tank as you come in at the 2 Oceans Aquarium.
GL60-SW5*5 waterproof
Waterproof IP 67 (silicone sleeve)
Size of LED chip: 50*50 (bigger, brighter than 1210)
Colour: Warm white, white, red, amber, green, blue, RGB
Strips can be cut every 10cm
No. of LED's: 60 per meter
Volt: DC24V
Power: 13 watts per meter
Connection: clips
Dimmable
Please advise if this would be suitable for my 90cm reef.
All input is greatly appreciated.

Hi, has anybody got frags for sale in WC?
-
Can anybody please help to identify this?
Yesterday it was only red around the place where this "Bubble" came out. It looks like aBubble but I can also see some vanes in it.
-
Saw a beautiful flaming angel today - great healthy specimen and was bout to buy it till I was given the opportunity to quickly read up about it on the net. Preferred food:
1. CLAMS :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: (I have three)
2. Crustaceans
3. Other Meaty foods
Man I badly wanted that fish!!!! There I was worrying it might take out my Zoas and low and behold it would of taken out my clams.

Hi all,
I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Either I didn't read the instructions properly (see picture of instructions below) or something is wrong.
What is happening:
Well I am getting exceptionally high readings from my TDS meter from the RO water coming out of the RO unit.
The interesting part is I have been using this RO water for SALT mix and RO top up for the last two months.
Equipment:
1. Brand new (two months old) RO unit from @
The Waterboy - Marco
I asked in a PM that I would like the RO unit to create RO water and I would still like to "Drink" / "Use" the by product as "purified" water.
Here are some quotes from the PM's:
MyTank
Quote:
Cool, ok so:
3. Whats the rating on the RO unit and does it produce drinking water. Does it have a pump and how many membranes is it?
|
@
The Waterboy - Marco
Quote:
drinking water can just be tapped off from outlet pipe.
it is the best range for marine r.o. systems available, but you can tap off the r.o.water and drink, place in bottle in fridge etc etc
take a look at6 link below, the unit quoted is pages 3, 5, 6, 7 ("it does not have resin chamber as you want to drink water aswell)
|
Make and type of RO unit:
So I have read these instructions:
And
IF (NOTE: It is possible I have it completely wrong) I understood this correctly: The water coming from where the turning value is (See below)
Value: 0.074:
This is "Drinking" water and not RO water...
The water coming from the second funnel at is the RO water as per the instructions above (see pic below for where I am taking RO water from)
Value: 0.079 (higher then the "Drinking" water :eek::eek::
So if we look at this the TDS readings of both are pretty much the same and in my humble opinion is WAY to high to be RO water? (Please comment).
So what have I done / tested:
1. I took my TDS meter to one of my fav LFS, they have the PEN type TDS readers. He tested his water and it read 0.003, I then tested it with my TDS meter and it was different but not by much 0.009.
2. I tested both inside tap water
0.090 (see below) and directly from the tap that is feeding the RO unit
0.084
Internal Tap:
Tap feeding RO unit:
Then I made sure as well that with NO water it was at least reading 0.000 (confirmed):
I then let it run and tried again:
RO outlet:
Drinking water outlet:
So we all know what we talking about when it comes to TDS meters here is the meter, make and instructions (which I have followed):
@
The Waterboy - Marco , and anyone else am I using the RO unit incorrectly , is there something wrong with the RO unit?
I would appreciate the help guys.
Interesting enough been using this water (before testing) on the tank and I haven't had many issues accept for high Phosphates. You can see my tank in my signature link, it is actually a highly healthy tank.
Thank you all!

Hi guys so I've been running my 600 litre tank now for 6 months and everything is going great, but last week I got the free 1000litre tank with sump and stand.
So my question is will I have to cycle the new one first or can I just move everything over?
-
hi all. i am looking for some drums to carry NSW home. anybody have any lying around please contact me.
Thanks
-
-
i fairly new to the marine world and just started my tank about 1 month ago, i bought about 65Kg of very good live rock with 7 fish and few corals from a fellow reefer who had to sell and so my tank is well stocked just a month after startup, things seem to be fine for now and hopefully stays that way. pictures will follow shortly, few questions i have, how do i keep my KH above 8, how ,many times a day should i feed my fish and what foods are best, how many hours a day should the lights be on.
-
Water volume is +- 120L with an xtra 70L in the sump.
Two pipes - the overflow pipe, as well as the airlift that drives the UG filter, are hidden by 2 columns of rock.
Skimmer and DSB in the sump.
The overflow pipe consists of two pieces that are joined in such a way that water can slowly seep through the joint,
but at a slower pace than the inflow from the return pump.
This allows me to simulate low and high tide by simply switching the return pump on or off.
During "low tide" I also switch off the powerhead inside the main tank to create calm water - like an isolated tide pool.
The airlift still continues to push water that percolates down over the exposed rocks.
The anemones in my tank react completely different depending on what tide it is - they become elongated during low and retract during high.
Some snails and hermits love to sit on the exposed rocks during low tide.
Everything seems to come alive once high-tide arrives.
a Bonus is that I can save a little bit of electricity by not running everything all the time.
I can also keep the temp down when needed - today I measured 35degrees C right next to the tank, water temp was only 24degrees.
I've been running hightide this evening and temp has gone up a degree, so time for low again...
One day I will syncronize everything to actual tide charts.

Hi
This is my second last algae that I have discovered after coming back from holiday. Again, I like it, lokos pretty/natural in the tank so would like to keep it, but not if it is going to become a problem.
It is only in 3 places in my tank and not really growing since I am back, one is actually residing.
I assume this is grape calpura?
Can it be kept safely? (My filter system should be able to deal with it going "sexual" as it is a very small amount).

Discovering more and more hitch hickers as time goes by.
Noting is eating my coral so they can't be that bad?
I have seen this snail before, can anyone confirm an ID for it?
-
Posted: November 18th, 2011, 6:52am CST by Len
My very smart hitch hiker crab is getting very tame, even posed for a photo last week.
He is locally know as Hell Boy (for obvios reasons).
I always assume crabs are bad, but this one has been in my tank since the start and even with a lot of small gobies I have had no losses (that I can contribute to him).
Any idea on ID?
Assume he has to go (not been very successful at catching him).

I bought this brain a week ago and from what I can tell it is doing ok. I noticed this morning that the flesh seems to have disappeared from part of the skeleton, I am not sure if something has been nipping at it or if it is decaying as it was fine yesterday.

I want to know what size ( l/h ) return pump I need to get for my system.
It will be a fish only system.
The systems total volume is around 820 liters, so the running volume will be a bit less than that.
Any suggestion will be appreciated.
Henk:)

I am looking for a small, cheap chiller for my tiny nano. Anyone selling one?
-
I have the quad doser with built in controller, and last night I realised that the one pump was not dosing via the controllers dosing program. I can run the pump manually via the push button but thats it.
Just wanting to find out if anyone had a similar issue and if there is a quick fix without sending it in for repairs.

What is the most nutritious food we can feed Goldies (That is also not a huge mission)??
I use a few different types from live Brine to marine krill and frozen...
But I know someone has the best answer..:tt2:
Whatever works best, I will personally give that person a bunch of Goldies when they come visit;)

Hi peeps, as much as I don't want too, but the time has come to frag my beloved torch coral, although my prized tank inmate ???
If I had a choice I would just leave him be, but just getting too big and taken out my staghorn SPS in a chemical warfare battle.
Before I embark on this delicate task I will appreciate ANY tips and pointers from anyone who has valuable experience to share. I've heard some horror stories about the skeleton breaking etc.. :-(

Hi all
Been a bit bored lately :whistling: my tank has been very stable so I thought I would do some research in the area of UV sterilizers. It is very interesting and since people claim it can control infestations of bacteria, parasites(Possibly irradicate as proven by a fish farm in the USA) and water clarity I went as far as to understand how it does it???
I found this report written by Carl Strohmeyer and from everything I have read so far this topic he gives the best overall explanation to how UV sterilzers work and should be applied.!!! Enjoy !
UV Sterilization, Irradiation for Aquariums, Ponds; UVC Sterilizers Information
Your thoughts !
Got some interesting math calcs on it so I will be doing some experiments !!!

Smartwave is the new controller for movement and circulation pumps designed by Hydor. In nature, river and sea currents are a vital part of the natural life cycle of aquatic creatures as they promote oxygenation, transport nutrients and food and remove residues that would otherwise pollute.
Smartwave helps recreate these currents which allow a healthy aquarium and uniform water temperature by selecting one of the 2 available programs:
- Alternate: pump 1 ON pump 2 OFF, pump 1 OFF - pump 2 ON.
- Synchronous: pump 1 and 2 go ON and OFF together.
Details:
- 2 outlets, both for up to 100W; Unit is UL approved and water resistant.
- 2 selection knobs, 1 for pump program (alternate-synchronous), 1 for time interval setting (second, minutes, hours)
- Feeding program. Compact, Smartwave is easy to conceal by hanging it inside the aquarium cabinet. Designed for Koralias, Smartwave works with most movement pumps available on the market compatible with quick ON-OFF (5 seconds= 6.3 million on/off per year)

Hi,
Looking at starting my first Marine Aquarium early next year. So busy looking at different tanks and what I want to have in my tank at the moment. I have kept tropical fresh water fish from an early age (got started on the hobby with dad).
My current apartment is not the biggest place so the size of the tank is going to have to be limited. So at the moment I am looking at getting the The Aquaria AMW102 Nano. Would this be a wise choice?
I'm also more interested in having invertebrates and coral. So at this point just looking to include 2 clown fish, a cleaner shrimp, anemone, hermit crab, fan worm.
Any advice would be very welcome :)

Howzit peeps,
I recently setup my 2m tank with various fish in from my old system including triggers, tangs, angels etc no corals.......
since ppl are talkin of shaolin fish looking awesome in a tank, iwas thinkin of adding a big group of percula clowns maybe about 16-20 of them.
Will this work?
will they kill each other off?
Will the other inmates giv them a hard time?
Must I add them all together or can i add 5 at time?
I like the effect of the Two Oceans Aquarium Nemo tank,i just want to mix them up abit.

Hi, I am in the process of getting all the goodies together for my new tank. Which I will start setting up hopefully next month as I am moving to a bigger house.
After much reading and also having both a 1.2m and a 2.0m marine tank on and off over the last 10 years. I have decided that the best size tank IMO is 1200mm x 600m x 500m (LxWxH)
I have been the MH route on my old 2M tank but have decided that T5's is the way I want to go forward.
I have already got a DIY system set up which will house 6 x 54w T5's, what I would like to know is the below the ideal light wise or should I change things. The idea is to have the tank as an island viewable from all four sides.
1 - Actinic+
2 - Aguablue+
3 - Aquablue+
4 - Aqua Pink
5 - Aquablue+
6 - Actinic+
Thanks

hi. was wondering if the mods could remove all sales threads that have been closed. because people are looking for specific items in the sales forum and quite often what we are looking for is already gone but still listed on the forum. is it possible for the closed items, items older than 2 months to be removed? like how gumtree works?
just an opinion

GREAT NEWS:lol::thumbup:
After reporting on 5/10/2011 that my beloved Yellow Watchman Goby died and left my Pistol Shrimp all alone and hidden away to the extent that I thought he will not make it, I finally got a beautiful Watchman yesterday.
I added him to the tank and within 15 min I heard the Pistol clicking. The Goby dissapeared under the rock and voila..... out they came.... together..... big buds!!!! The goby is taking fish from the feeder and spitting it back into the hole where the pistol is. I am so chuffed...:biggrin:

Cleaner shrimp have a calculating, murderous sex life
If you've ever watched a nature program on coral reefs, you've probably seen a cleaner shrimp. These animals set up cleaning stations on the reefs where passing fish let the shrimp pluck off parasites. It's a classic symbiotic relationship: the fish have fewer parasites, while the shrimp get a meal and don't get made into one. Beneath this G-rated facade, however, one of the species of cleaner shrimp engages in a sex life that's calculating and murderous.
Lysmata amboinensis is what's technically known as a "protandric simultaneous hermaphrodite." That means that, as they mature, the animals only have male sexual organs. Once they reach a certain stage in development, however, they add female organs to their repertoire, with both being active simultaneously. They do not, however, mate with themselves, preferring a serial monogamy in which they fertilize a single partner and, in turn, get fertilized by them.
Now, this sort of mating could take place among any number of partners, but some researchers suspect there were two factors driving the animals towards forming pairs. For one, it simplifies the energetic cost of mating; the animals only have to make enough sperm for one partner, and don't have to waste energy overproducing for some unpredictable number of additional mates. The other issue is that larger groups open the door for selfish feeding behavior, where the shrimp move beyond eating parasites and start plucking pieces off their clients, causing the fish to avoid a cleaning station and harming the entire group.
In fact, they found that the pressures to create a stable pair of shrimp was so intense, that any larger group became positively murderous. When they put larger groups of shrimp in a single container, the animals reduced their numbers down to a pair. "Exactly one individual in each triplet and exactly two individuals in each quartet were killed in aggressive interactions, resulting in group sizes of two individuals," the authors report.
The killings took place after one member in the large group had moulted, or shed its hard outer shell in order to grow. In fact, the shrimp seem to know that moulting creates this risk, since the animals in the larger groups put off moulting (and hence sacrifice growth) until one of them finally shed its shell and was dispatched.
Presumably, this sort of lethal interaction doesn't happen much in the wild, since an odd animal out would recognize its peril and move on to a new location. Still, it's a rather extreme way to keep a visitor from overstaying its welcome and mating with your partner.

Hey everyone... So were do I start..
Ok .. So in march 2010 I started my 1st marine tank,60cm standard tank.. Wasn I jus soooo excited.as usual, I rushed things, without failing I filled up my tank in just under a month lol... Tank got to small and went to a 90cm tank....3mnths later also full then i swoped my out my all male Malawi showtank to a marine reef... 6months later I was offered a 2m from fellow ex-reefer gavin... This is wen the sweat started and expenses went thru the roof lol
In jan 2011 I started her up,tranfered all stock and rock from 900 and 1.2m into 2m tank... I was so excited once again but what was left was an empty tank lol. It was so big I needed much more...over the months ,9 to be exact, I just spent and spent and spent up to R52 000.... Wow in my opinion, I ended up with a pretty awsome system.... But guys,I've decided I have bigger fish to fry(excuse the pun) ... Its now time to move on and concentrate on my family(wife and 2 kids) ... In the market to now buy my 1st house (@ age of 26)
I have sold out everything and now I'm so sad:(,u won't believe,I sold because as the homeowners know, with buying a house comes renovations, and all new expenses I never had, so didn want the tank to become a liability.... Hopefully in the future I will maybe, big maybe setup a new tank in my own home....
So the actual reason for this thread is to bid farewell to all fellow reefers and amazing friends I met along the way.also I have run into quite a bit of trouble on masa so herewith I include a formal apology to everyone affected by my misconduct and arguments.. I have been banned as JsPLAYn, hence given 2nd chance as JsREEFn... And I am very thankfull to the guys responsible...
This hooby will never die in me, I will most probably still go to lfs's lol and browse masa every now and again... I just felt this thread was necesary more for the apology part coz I wouldn just drop out on bad graces or with people disliking me.so I'm not a coward afterall lol... So there you go guys an girls and ..... Lol.... I fare thee well, keep on reefn:yeahdude:
Thanking you

Hi all. am looking at starting a marine tank. i dont want anything to big. the bigger the more expensive. this is what i was thinking. looking at a display tank of 600l by 600 w b 450 h. thanks Mekaeel for the idea. but now, i have always wanted to inc-operate a frag/quarantine tank. now the idea would be to have a display tank, underneath that the quarantine tank, and then sump on the floor. all in a line, but at diff levels. has anybody attempted this? or has done this before? yes the tank stand will be a little higher, as well as the quarantine tank and sump will be a little smaller in size as compared to the display.
any ideas? guidence?

HI All
Our Office tank is just about ready for life stock, the tank has been cycling for +/- 4 month now, so now its time to think about choosing fish, I know for a start to get 2 fish which we intend to do, after that we will introduce fish slowly but I need to know what fish?
Things I know we have to consider is, that there is a lot of movement in the office, and people want to see the fish, so we cannot get fish that duck and dive when people want to see the tank, and there must be a lot of color
So what FISH????

ran into something strange, i was setting up my holding tank using RO and microbelift salt, i mixed it up at 24deg and let it run with a skimmer, some flow and added some special blend, and a day later i see the water is milky, the heater i had stopped working, could the cold temp have caused a snow storm?? i am going to test params this eve to see, but i added some carbon and filterfloss to get things running and hoping this eve its clear

need some clarity on it, I have surfed the net for answers and they are never clear on it .

My tank is 90cmx35cmx35cm. I would like to keep clams, coral and anemones!
Please help!

I have a 54W T5 light fixture (4 x bulbs). I need some advice which bulbs to use... I have 2 white bulbs, 2 blue/white bulbs and 2 actinic bulbs. at the moment I have been using 2 actinics, 1 blue white and 1 white. Which combination will be the best? Is it true that the whiter the spectrum the more algae? Because my friend's spectrum is more blue and he is not getting any algae.
Thanx in advance :)

Hi I've had my new tank 240l going for about 4/5 months and everything was doing super my green star polyps multiplying like neva before, the leather growing well......overall the tank was doing great. I went away for a long weekend and when i came back my leather became this huge white blub...a few days later nothing remained.
my hammer also started to almost not come out so i started adding salt to get it from 1.020 to 1.023. I also added 2 T5's.
Nothing is seeming to help in the meantime i also added a dsb.
Help will be appreciated!!

I am in the Roodepoort area. The live rock has been in my fish tank for +/-7 years and is fully seeded.

My understanding is that they leave their shell to do it. But now on two occasions I have found the remains of it and a crab still in the shell? Do I have another one hiding or do I clearly just not understand?

So the move to the new house went well, and the only unfortunate loss was a Fairy Wrasse...
At the new house there are three 3m x 6m sheds. One of the sheds is positioned so that it gets full sun the whole day. Id like to explore the option of turning it into a Coral Room, by replacing the corrugated sheets with Polycarb sheets. Id like to have a few large shallow runs where I can grow soft corals and LPS. Im still not 100% sure exactly which corals I want to grow, but I would like to grow a variety of Leathers, Mushrooms and Florida Rics. The coral room will also house my RO unit, mixing station etc, as well as a QT setup or two.
Id need to explore options to keep the temp stable. Im thinking if I replace the roof with the polycarb sheets (clear) and then cover the shed with a blue shadecloth, it would already make a significant difference to keep the temp cooler.
Id like to get some advice from guys whove had/do have a successful coral room/greenhouse.

Can someone please turn this chiller off.
We came through Grabouw yesterday to find snow on the Helderberg Mountains and arrived home in a shower of ice rain.
What's going on with this chiller...?
-
I've got lots of green coraline algae, but little pink/purple. (Circular growths on back of tank glass.) I was not cleaning the back and thought some nice pink and purple coraline back there would look ok, but it's covered in the green ones. Only one little pink one in site. How do I encourage the pink/purple/maroon colors and discourage the green?

Hi All.
Has anyone tried to keep brine shrimp in a pond?
I was at a LFS yesterday looking for brine and the guy there took me to the back and caught some for me out of a pond, first time I have ever heard of that.
I asked him about it and he told me its fresh water and they eat the algae in the pond. The funny thing is I brought them home and put half of them in a container in the water they came in and the other half in salt water that I had left over from my tank. When I woke up this morning I was surprised to see all the brine in the origanal water are dead and all the brine I put in the salt water still alive. I understand they are supposed to live in salt water, but what I don't understand is how they are living and breading in fresh water.
I have an old pond about a meter by a meter and half and im thinking of setting one of these up, as I have a mandarin and a fresh water pipefish that only eat live brine. I was just wondering if anyone has tried this before as can't find anything on masa or google?
-
Hi,
I am battling high calcium parameters in my tank lately. Its seems I am not the only one now and theres also great discussion on the causes of it on MASA.
At this stage the discussions on the possible causes are concentrated around : the saltmix used (the correct/or not, mixture therof),
or faulty test kits.
1. What has been established so far is that the problem tanks in question have all been using Seachem Reefsalt. Seachem Reefsalt are being sold at very special rates by the LFS' the past few months so naturally a lot of reefers are using it!
OR,
2. Our test kits: As we are presumably all using different test kits, it will be near impossible to establish "good" from "bad" brands. As with all things in life, there will also be personal preferences.
My question is: I'm using API test kits that is not readily available nor widely used in South Africa. I buy it in Houston when I visit threre. It came highly recommended by the LFS shops in Houston and also online by Fosters&Smith Aqauatics. Have been using it for more than a year now and are really pleased with API as they are extremely user friendly. I have tested them to Salifert and Tropic Marin getting the same results.
Are you familiar with API test kits and what is your opinion on them.
-
Ive started this thread to catalogue Rare Marine Fish that you have either kept in your tanks or seen in South Africa, so please add to this if you think your specimen qualifies.
'Rare' is defined by the Oxford dictionary as ... 'not found in large numbers and so of interest or value' In our reefing context more than 10 of any species is NOT regarded as rare. An unusual specimen of a species is also considered as rare.
Lets see the weird and the wonderful. Moderators I guess will reserve the right to remove pics that are not considered as rare, so please use your discretion
If anyone would like a photo taken of their rare fish or transformed into an artwork to hang on their wall or office, please PM me and we can work something out.

Hey ppl.
So I have finished my tank and DIY light etc. (Pics to follow when I learn how to upload:banghead:). I filled my tank and sump with NSW (as far as I know it was clean and un-polluted, but the usual slightly green colour) and it was relatively clean, which soon became crystal clear when I ran the skimmer (which pulled a lot of muck out). It stayed like this till the next morning.
When I returned in the afternoon, it was murky, like someone had milk poured into it. I am guessing this might have something to do with ammonia? Unfortunately I can't test for ammonia as I don't have a test kit for it.
All I have in the tank at the mo is some well cured live rock...
Any advice etc would be cool, cause i'm stressing slightly:blush:
(If i could upload a pic of the water i would, but i can't seem to get this uploader to work, even after re-sizing).

I have been thinking about this but have not tried it yet as my first experience with biopllets caused my leathers to bleach ,but if one has a good sized skimmer and put a filter bag with biopellets in the skimmer body wouldnt one get very good skimming out of the bacteria it produces? plus the removal of the nitrates and phosphates they used up in their biomass?
Any thoughts?

Hi, I am very keen to get going in this wonderful hobby. At the moment I am doing as much research as possible so that I don't start off on the wrong foot.
I intend to start off with a fairly large tank, 2mx0.65hx0.7w. For a tank this size would it be best to drill holes the tank for plumbing or to use siphon boxes?
-
Any guess what fish this is. Will post full pic after 48hrs or when someone id's this.
Fish Trivia #1

Hi all
Just started a new aquarium after selling my last one 10 years ago. Introduced about 50kg live rock and a sand bed in the sump with approx 300 litres mature water. The aquarium is a week old now and almost perfect to start populating, only a sniffle of phosphate/nitrate holding me back. the children are older now and have become keen participants, we'll see how long that lasts. So this weekend we look forward to arranging the reef in prep for it's new inhabitants.
Congrats on the forum, look forward to participating.

ok to start..my stcking list:
2 sebae clowns(pair)
1 niger trigger
1 fire goby
1 bicolour angel
1 pygmy angel
1 copperband
2 lunare wrasses(no clue on sexual orienations or preferences. lol)
2 blue mandarins(pair)
1 yellow tang
1 scopa tang
ok last night after the lights went off..i do what i usually do which is i take a blue led torch and watch my corals for a while Then i noticed that my water had lots of particles floating which is extremely odd. Upon further inspection...it turned out to be babies!! of what i dont know. They were aprox 1mm long and looked and swam like shrimp. Now thats the problem...i dont have shrimp!! (ok i have like 6 miniscule ones in the sump)
any ideas? This is the first time ive ever had anything marine related reproduce :D (apart from snails) so im pretty chuffed. Theyre all gone now...
thanks

Howzit Guys,
Got myself a BOYU TL550 yesterday, the guy that I bought it from helped me alot in the sense that he added in a better protein skimmer and he modified the pump (aparantly the skimmer and pump were not that great as a standard spec)
Its my 1st time with a marine tank and its always been a dream to have 1. I know its major work and people are frightened off @ how expensive it gets but if I want it then I gotta jump in and learn!
This is what I am going to do next, put water in the tank (going to get the premixed water) with the sand and get it up to the corret temperature. Then I will add live rock for about a month and then add a pair of clowns.
I plan on taking it easy and slow with this hobby, so maybe just about 4 or 5 fish total, with some coral.
Is my beginning proccess correct so far?
Lastly, the BOYU 550 has 2 big buttons on the roof for the lights, I know that the right side button is for the regular light. My issue is the left side button, when I push the button I see a small blue dot where the bulbs are, its like a circular dot, bout the size of a 5Rand coin...very weird!!Is this maybe moonlight viewing or what????
Thanx Guys for all your help, please dont leave comments too complicated. Like I said Im VERY new to marine. Peace:thumbup:

I should dip all my corals when thwy come in. from now on yes i will.

Hi MASA
Long time no see....
I have a general question w.r.t. lighting, more specific about the spectrum:
I'm coming to the end of the setup of my 1,7m reef tank and are now stuck on lighting. Don't worry, nothing in the tank yet - not even water... :)
My question: At what spectrum do my lights need to start (morning), peak (noon) and end (afternoon) before I fire up the moonlight.
The reason for my question is simple - Cost of MH lights and the electicity bill attached to it. I'm researching LED's. I have a supllier that build LED's for all purposes & he just needs to know the answer to my question to build me a lighting setup at about 50-60% less than the cost of a setup of T5's with MH, but with the same effect.

I thought it would be interesting to talk about some of the odder things some of us do that is not the norm.
Thanks to computers and the internet much of this hobby has become a cookie cutter endeavour and many people do the same things the same way.
I started way before the internet so there was no easy way to exchange ideas so I had to develop them myself. I have been doing these things for so long that I forget and think everyone does it that way, but I find that I am wrong. When I post these Ideas, people just look at me funny. Well, I can't really see them, but I think they are looking at me, or at least the computer screen funny.
So I decided to write down some of the wierd-ish things I do that some people may not have heard of. If you did, just humor me.
I think I will start with Pop Eye. I just answered a post about this and the person is still looking at me, or the computer screen anyway.
Fish get Pop Eye all the time, I don't know exactly why and neither does anyone else. I know there are all sorts of theories but trust me, no one knows for sure. But no matter what caused it, it is easy to treat. This usually heals on it's own with no help from us and I would wait a while to see if that happens, but if it keeps getting worse, the eye could completely pop out. That is not real good and I know I would not like that happening to me. Of course I don't think fish feel pain like we do but that is for another post where everyone can yell at me for my opinion.
If the fish has a severe case of Pop Eye, no matter what caused it, the eye is protruding for one of two reasons. One is gas behind the eye and one is pus from an infection. Either way it is not an eye problem but a malfunction in the way the fish was designed. If you look at a fish skull, you see a dent in it where the eye goes and a tiny hole in the back where the optic nerve attaches to the eyeball. Once gas or a infection gets back there, the preasure has no place to go so it pushes out on the eye. (we have sinuses and all sorts of places for preasure to go, not that it makes us feel any better but our eyes don't usually pop out) It does not seem like there is any blood flow to that area because there are no veins that I can see and no hole through the skull for the vein to enter. There also would be no need for blood flow there as the eye has it's own blood supply that seems to travel with the optic nerve. Of course I am not a fish surgeon but I do occasionally operate (if their insurance covers it)
Anyway, the preasure needs to be releived so the eye can get back to where it is supposed to go.:(
To do this, I catch the fish and hold it in a net. I position the fish so that I have access to his eye. Then I take a sterile hypodermic needle with nothing in it and gently stick it in the thin stretched skin that is still holding the eye in. Usually the top part is stretched the most. Then I pull back on the plunger and the eye instantly goes back to where it is supposed to be. Either air or a milky fluid will come out. Sometimes the eye does not go back all the way and I do it again the next day.
If I notice that there is fluid and not just gas, sometimes I inject a little injectable antibiotic, then remove it.
In the 45 years or so and the dozens of patients I have done this on, I have never lost a patient, been sued, caused blindness, or could not cure the fish.
I don't puncture the eye and the needle can not penetrate into the brain because the skull is totally behind the eyeball.
Now for people who think this is barbaric, and you know why you are. Just think, if your eye was hanging out of your head to the point where you could lose it and someone said to you that they could totally cure you in 5 seconds would you say, "Oh my God No, I kind of like my eye like this, maybe I could get on TV" Or would you say, "hurry up and do the dam thing?":yeahdude:
I will post another one tomorow, in the meantime, if anyone has any un orthodox ways to do things, feel free to post as I am not the God of fish tanks.

Nemos Janitor and @
ADVdiver I just want to shout out to both Kieth and Matthew. I can always drop a line to them and I must be one of their most @nal customers. I ask the dumbest questions and with the greatest respect and patience they always spend the time answering me. Kieth came out to my place which is out of his way to help me out with my profilux spent time and even proved my salifiet test kit is a piece of cr@p. was measuring 25 - 50ppm which had me constantly stressing adding things to the tank only to find a side by side test showed 2-3ppm vs 25-50ppm.
Matthew well aways helping on the phone regardless of the time and length of the call.
Thank you both I really do appreciate you do!

Right so, hello all.
I find myself starting my setup for a second time.
This time I will not start with a second hand tank and second hand equipment as this seems to be a good way to purchase other peoples problematic stuff.
I have decided to have a tank built by Idol Marine and Build and Galvanise a steel stand myself. following which I will install my new reactors and skimmer(Reef Octo otp-2000) with my new vortex flow pumps.
I will take the time to get this all done. And only then will I get the Tank surrounded by a cabinet maker.
This is the plan for my 1000 x 600 x 500High rimless tank with skinny overflow and black laminate backround.
I will use only my live rock and coral from my old tank which crashed whilst I was on holiday a year ago. I managed to save it from extinction but just only and it has recovered slowly over the last year.
But cutting corners from a price perspective has left me with a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to this old tank.
Will do this next one RIGHT!!
Look forward to all my interactions with all of you going forward.

Hi All
I have got some star polyps that have grown up to some zoas and they seem to be irritating the zoas to the point the zoas next to them aren't opening fully. I was just wondering if the star polyps will completely grow over the zoa in time or if they will just irritate those at the edge of the colony?

Hi members
I have a pair of common clowns and few other species of fish... can I safely add a Tomato clown into my tank since the nennie i have in my DT was actually his and my common clown pair isnt even interested in the nennie.
But im afraid the Tomato will start fighting with the others.
The Tomato clown has been in my sump for the past two weeks. . .
What to do ??

Hi everyone..
I'm new to the forum and to marine aquariums.
I hope to start my new hobby soon but I'm going to need allot of help from you guys.. If you dont mind.
I want to start my "Project" from scratch .Building a Reef Tank ,Cabinet ,sump and everything my self because I'm on a limited budget and i believe it will help me get experience with marine aquariums and what makes them tic.
And here is where I need your help and advise. I'm looking at a 1200mm(L) x 450mm (w) x 600mm(h) but im not sure at all if this would be OK for my first tank, do I need smaller or bigger? The volume will be around 324L if my math is correct
I also need some advise on the hardware. There are so many things available. I dont know what is nessesary and what is luxury. I tried to filter through all the information on the net but I'm strugling to make sense of it all.I need to know what i should install in the sump, i want to install a skimmer but not sure witch one would be adaquate for the tank and how many pumps , where they should go and what the L/hour rating should be.
Any way, hope you guys can help

Hey everyone,
So it seems I've got a massive problem. I've been using tropic Marin bio calcium which is a balanced alk, calcium and magnesium supplement. When I fist started the tank my calcium was too high (500ppm), this was all down to the salt mix (seachem). I've been keeping my alk at around 8 and from previous experience with bio calcium this has kept my calcium and magnesium in the right range but now these are my readings:
Alk: 8
Calcium: 700
Magnesium: 1800
Salinity: 1.026
What should I do to drop my calcium and magnesium without dropping my alk?
Are these readings even possible?

My tank hood is with 3xt8 fluorescent (1 sera actinic blue 30w , 2 sera daylight brilliant 30w each).
As I understood these are not enough for a reef tank (or I am wrong :/) and I was thinking to upgrade it a little bit:P
I dont want to make any changes on the hood and I thought to add some LEDs on the hood as additional lighting. Is that a good idea and if yes is there any specs that I should look for?(watt etc)
Another option is to change the t8 florescent with t8s with LEDs
Any recommends/suggestions?

Hi there
Im trying to catalogue all my coral specimens in my tank and would like the scientific names for these species
Left - the 'stems' are flat with polyps only opening on either of the ends?? - sorry dont have a pic with polyps open
Centre - commonly known as golden california gorgonian - is this Muricea californica??
Right - I think this is Muriceopsis flavida - commonly know as Purple Brush Fan?? This specimen came in distressed and I had to cut it down more than 50%, hence its odd shape

I have some experience with these type of lights, and they are relatively bright, but the big thing is that their prices have really dropped lately and they are fully controlable when it comes to color and brightness.
Can some of the lighting guru`s check if they can find out what lumens per watt and what have you these fittings have ?
was thinking of 3x led par cans and one simple club light controller, which you will use to control color temp and brightness... that will work out to about R7k for a led lighting system which is fully controlable.

Hi guys
Here are some pics of my full tank setup on the 6 month anniversary of this 1.2m tank.
Ive posted pics under different threads of my tank specimens, but will try and upload interesting stuff about my tank on a regular basis on this thread.
Looking forward to share my 'Ocean of Life' with you all. The tank was a natural migration from my two Boyu TL-550 ive had. The reason to migrating to a bigger tank is obvious, but I wanted to have different fish and let them have free space to swim around rather than being limited to a small cube. Another important reason is that I didnt have a chiller and experienced some temperature spikes which wiped out quite a few corals together with a lot of effort managing two tanks was a no-brainer. In hindsight, Managing a Boyu was the best learning experience I can give anyone a small closed system is much more difficult thatn a larger system with a sump and reactors. Guess what, my 1.2m is too small
I bought this tank second hand and the only regret is that with it being only 45cm deep its limiting, so I went with open scaping with at least 5cm free all round to get to all parts of the tank. As much as Ive limited room for corals, I simply love the scaping this way as the fish are happy to swim around in the various caves and cavities.
The tank setup is a typical reef setup up with lots of softies and LPS. Only recently did I introduce SPS of the Monti family. The open top section is perfect for SPS to grow into, so I think this works well. I also decided not paint the background blue or black and decided not to let coraline grow on the back glass to give that smart clean look. The reflection of the light on the back wall helps with illumination of the tank and gives the tank more depth
Will post seperate posts on Hardware, Corals, Fish, Inverts, the unsusal etc . Please share your ideas on coral ideas and what fish I can add next.
Lastly a very BIG Thank You to all the reefers for sharing their knowledge unselfishly and inspiring me to create my 'Ocean of Life'
Here are two pics under normal lights followed by actinics only as requested.

This is a great article in a real science journal. I think it's awesome when scientists take a positive interest in what happens in aquariums.

Hi guys, On thursday I did a 50L water change on my 400L system and on Sunday I put in a DSB using playsand that I washed properly (15cm). Straight after the water change on Thursday all my corals closed and they still look closed/weak.:( Must I give it time? And one more thing I bought 2 sand sifting starfish Saturday. The one is moving and going under the sand but the other one is on the sand and he has only lifted his arms now and then... is he dying? My fish are like always
Thanx in advance:)

I have to admit that I wrote this over a year ago and am just pasting it here.
It is just my opinions about mostly the food aspect of keeping fish in healthy, disease free shape.
I don't know much about SA but here in the States I can buy a food called Live Black worms. They are something like tubifex but a little fatter.
I feed these worms every day along with newly hatched baby brine shrimp to the smaller fish and corals.
I strongly feel that the main ingredient missing from our fishes diet is oil.
Fish do not have any solid fat but they are loaded with oil. Most fish can not digest fat because their body temperature does not allow the fat to melt and most of it just passes through their system. Pelagic sharks can and do eat warm blooded animals because they are kind of warm blooded (but for a different reason than us)
I also feed fresh clams as there is also important elements in the guts of almost any animal and when we feed clams, we feed the guts as well as the muscle.
Fish in the sea do two things, eat and spawn. They spawn every few weeks and if a fish does not have the capacity to lay eggs, it is not very healthy at all.
A fishes spawn is almost all oil and a big demand is put on a fish to acomplish this.
To get fish in this condition in a tank they need to be fed oil, lots of oil.
Fish eat fish which can be 20% oil. It is missing in commercially prepared foods because it goes bad. Even if frozen.
Worms are an excellent source of oil as is new born brine shrimp. (they lose their nutritional value in a few hours)
Baby fish is the best food for our fish but unfortunately not yet available. I have spoken to "Ocean Nutrition" about this but to no avail.
I suppliment the worms with pellets that I soak in fish oil, the same type that I take. Fish need oil every day to stay in breeding condition and fish in breeding condition live forever and hardly, if ever get sick.
Here is the article I wrote a while ago:
There are so many problems or concerns in this hobby about fish diseases. I really don't know why so many people have problems with this but I have a hunch.
Our fish in the sea never really die of old age. A fish, unfortunately, is an animal that usually ends it's life as supper for some other animal, being either another fish, seal, bird or humans. Even a fearsome great white shark will eventually grow so old and slow that it can no longer catch sea lions and it will starve to be eaten by other less fearsome animals.
But in a captive envirnment fish can live for years or decades. And they should. Fish have evolved a fairly elaborate immune system because they have been here for millions of years longer than us, well most of us. The fact that live in a watery envirnment demands that their immune system function well because the sea is host to all the chemicals, minerals bacteria and viruses on earth. The water is actually an extension of the fishes circulatory system so whatever is in the water, is also in the fish.
We humans have it much easier because we only need to inhale air and not everything else on earth.
This immune system works almost flawlessly but only if the fish is in perfect health. Through my observations it seems that their immune system is severly compromised by a lack of certain things in their diet along with stress.
We can't do much about the stress of captivity short of releasing the fish to the wild but we can do much about their diet.
Fish IMO should almost never get sick. If we have a town of 100 people and a human lifespan is about 80 years then most people should live about 80 years, some 60 some 100 but on average.
If out of those 100 people absolutely none of them reach 30 years old and 10% of the rest of them come down with something, you may not want to live in that town.
Fish want to live and if they get sick it is usually our fault.
Keeping the immune system of a fish healthy is paramount to keeping the animal disease free. Even paracite free although I don't know exactly how they become immune to paracites but I know they do.
My tank is no better than anyone elses but I have not lost a fish to a disease in decades. Why is that?
I doubt it is my UG filter, people just laugh at that. I don't think it has to do with my ozone although that could help. I don't change nearly as much water as most people. I get the fish from many different sources.
It has to be either the bacteria I add from the sea, but I don't see how that would help. Or the food.
I am betting on food. I could be wrong because I am not the God of fish and not an expert. By the way, there are no experts because this is a hobby. No one has a degree in hobbies although some people think they do.
I am only going by my own observations here and my 40 years of hanging out underwater.
The best food for most fish is fish. Whole fish, guts liver bones, scales and all.
I myself don't usually feed whole fish, i wish I could but I do feed live whole worms, whole fish eggs and whole clams after I freeze them.
If you do much diving you will see millions of tiny fish fry all over the place near the bottom, this makes up a large part of a fishes diet. Not flakes, pellets or freeze dried anything.
I believe it is the guts of the prey fish that keeps the immune system functioning properly. Specifically the liver which is mostly oil.
A 100lb shark is almost 20lbs oil. Fish need this oil to maintain bouyancy and to produce eggs.
Only the healthiest fish can spawn because making babies is a great challenge for a fish. It not only needs nourishment to keep itself alive but it needs a huge amount of extra nutrients to produce fry which at that point are mostly oil.
If a fish is spawning or making spawning jestures it is in excellent health. Fish in excellent health have excellent immune systems.
Fish with excellent immune systems do not get sick.
Again, this is only my theory and this entire hobby is based on mostly theory.
Have a great day.
Paul

Good day all, MY name is Pierre an I am new to this hobby.

Is there any way of knowing when to replace phosgaurd other than phosphates showing up on test kits?
I dont want to waste this product as its quite expensive.
Thanks

We have this little guy in our one 3-foot tank at the office sine January with no issues or problems. Also there have been no new fish added for over 6 months to this tank.
Could this be an injury or caused by another firsh or a disease
Please let me know what you think it is?

So I love Rics had both flora and yummas, however they just don't survive in my tank. All my corals are thriving (see my new updated posts on my tank thread in my signature) but no matter what I do my rics last a month then start to change color and eventually disappear.
Are they that difficult to look after? I have a gorgonian that survives nicely and multiple clams and the tank is looking good, but this is my third attempt at rics and each time I lose them after a month or so :( any advise please.

Always liked these little guys and since he has been in the tank he now eats flakes, pellets and see him nuke some PODS too.
He is a real interesting fellow he sleeps under the sand and doesn't seem to take any k@k from any of his other tank mates. Seems to love sitting on top of my open brains.
Last night I was taking some shots of the tank (
which I will be updating my tank thread with ) and caught him expanding his fin got two really nice shots WOW nice colors!:thumbup:
All of these are just normal cell phone camera:
This is him doing his thing:
And then he gets excited!

Hi everyone I have been looking at starting a marine tank for about 18 months now. I am at the stage where I can no longer resist and am jumping in. I have a 1.3mx.600mx.600 tank that I am using and a sump. That was the easy part I am now starting to gather the equipment and hopefully will have something to show for it middle of January 2012. Looking forward to this new hobby.

My latest book, titled "I Touched The Moon" is now available, but only through myself at the moment.
The softcover book is 286 pages long, with a number of black and white photographs. Although it is not all about marine fish keeping, there are numerous marine keeping stories, including rearing of clownfish larvae.
Here is the information on the back cover:
I Touched the Moon takes the reader to some of the most remote, wild and indescribably beautiful places on our planet. Travel with the author to the end of the world, to Ushuaia, with its snow-capped peaks, glacial lakes and sub polar forests, to wait for the Magellan Geese as they come flying in toward land, their dark pinions appearing through the mist while they were still way out at sea.
Meet Sylvia, the pregnant Lowland Gorilla female, who is being taught to mother, using a plush ape doll and the African elephant calf, Tantor, who can not fall asleep without a bed mate.
Discover how the author survived a potentially fatal attack by an adult gorilla male and escaped death after being charged by a hippopotamus bull and picked up in the trunk of an adult African elephant bull.
Meet the kitten which was befriended by a gorilla and the dingo that was mistaken for a werewolf.
Follow the authors efforts to breed marine fish and listen to his account of how he swallowed a living blue ring octopus, the most venomous of sea creatures.
Read about the dedicated, sometimes brave and often flawed personalities who are involved in conservation and the sometimes romantic, but invariably hectic world of zoos.
I Touched the Moon will awaken the spirit of adventure in everyone and move you with its poignant and exciting tales of wildlife and the people who have dedicated their lives to saving our fragile earth.
I am selling the book at R120.00 per copy (postage excluded).
I can be contacted on alan.jardine@live.co.uk and on mobile: 0827694550

Hey there MASA Reefers….:)
So after posting info on the Aquaria AMW102 last week on MASA I had a lot of PM's and requests to set up one of our Aquaria AMW102 ….well I did just that for all of you and I must say I really enjoyed it….

Here is the setup and pics….

Firstly unpack the box and gave the Nano a really good wipe down as there was quite a bit of dust from the shipping and packing….

One important thing I did was add a piece of polystyrene under the Nano to adsorb any unevenness. I then added my washed coral sand to the Nano….

Added some nice well cured live rock….

And yes as always I recommend Aquaria Ammonia stones. I washed the dust off the Ammonia stones and added them to the ceramic rings 50/50. I also added an extra layer of ammonia stones….

I am busy setting up my new tank and need help with skimmer
I have no idea what skimmer to get for the setup. The DT is 1220x800x550(W/L) and Sump will be +- 200L, and the budget is tight so not the most expensive one out there :P
Will be going more the LPS route with small fish and maybe a Yellow Tang.
Any advice on what skimmer will work?
Thanx

So I bought this little bugger when he was merely less than a CM, his is now about 1.5cm and I started noticing something...
He first tried to host in one of my clams but could see he was struggling, then at night he tried my frog spawn and was hosting there at night UNTIL the new member of the tank arrived - my new torch.
I noticed only at night he would go and host in the torch and in the last few days he is in this torch all the time. At the moment the torch is still fully out and doesn't seem to be to irritated but will see how its goes.
Not sure if its a GOOD or BAD thing yet....

Hey all, this goes out to the guys on the coast... obviously with table salt we add rice to absorb the moisture and to stop it from clumping..
How do I prevent it from happening with Reef salt? In a bag straight into the salt or do I just have to keep hacking at it like ice every time I want to use it?
I know it's something small but it turns my bi-weekly water changes into an almost all night affair :-(
Help!

Need a new skimmer... Keep me in mind if any of you have something.
Thanks members:)

Hi guys just want to know for a tank with mostly softies and few sps what type of skimming should one use dry or wet skimming?thank you
-
Hair algae is something that scares a lot of people and for good reason.
I only have one place in my reef where I grow it on purpose.
This was a string that I had tied to a coral that was at one time suspended from above the tank. I cut the string and let it unravel. It grew this tuft of hair algae in no time. I also collect amphipods like this, I cut a rope and unravel it. Then I hang it under my boat. It gets loaded with amphipods in a few days. This would alo house pods in a tank if I allowed it to rest on the substrait and is a good way to have a safe haven for them.
I find this one piece of hair algae interesting so I leave it alone. I don't have any tangs at the moment and the algae bleeny is not interested so there it stays.
Just felt like sharing

Hi,
I am not sure if this is the right place to post. Still finding my way around.
I have been running my tank for 2 months and also with zenia in it for a while now.
When I bought a new lights system and coral 3-4 days ago and placed it into my tank my coral started getting a slightly brown discolouration on it. When I had my parameters tested last week they seemed 100%.
Here is a photo of when I bought it and then followed by one i just took:

Guys my sump light went off and i have chaeto ... My dt lighting shines right down to the sump as my tank is on a stand... Will that be fine?
-
Ok, so I wired a Osram 2x36w T8 ballast to run 4x 15W tubes for a mini frag tank going into a cupboard.
I tested the whole setup outside the cupboard and it worked perfectly. Using the same wires (so length didn't change) I mounted the end-plugs in the cupboard and wired them to the ballast.
Now when I switch on the ballast all 4 tubes turn on for a split second and then stays off.
I checked the connections, shortened the wires even more, tried a few other things. Running out of ideas as what it might be. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks

Hi, im wanting to make a Diy light pendant for my tank.
The tank is 1200mm x 600mm x 500mm (LWH)
I will have 6 x 54w T5's
The tank has back Silocone and will be viewable from all sides and would like a nice pendant.
I was going to make a standard box shape type hood out of wood and hang it from the ceiling, but would like to have something a bit more BLING.
I was thinking something in aliminium 1200x450x150 (LWH)
Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this as well as where to get Aluminium in Cape Town.
Also im not the most DIY guy around so it would have to be real simple.
Thanks EXPERTS for your help.
Cheers

Recent design innovations like bubble plates, conical sides, or pinwheel impellers do not seem to impact significantly on either rate of TOC removal or amount of TOC removed, at least for the skimmers tested. Thus, skimmer manufacturer claims about enhanced organic removal capabilities should be met with skepticism in the absence of compelling and quantitative TOC removal data.
|
Feature Article: Further Studies on Protein Skimmer Performance — Advanced Aquarist | Aquarist Magazine and Blog
It is tough reading but here are the highlights:
The study measured two aspects of skimmer performance:
(1) how fast the skimmer removes organic matter from salt water, and
(2) the amount of organic contaminants removed relative to the total amount present in the tank water.
Two types of water were prepared for skimming tests:
(1) Bovine Serum Albumin (1.33 gm, 96% pure from Sigma Chemical Company) was dissolved in 35 gallons of 35 ppt freshly prepared saltwater (Coralife brand salt mix).
(2) Reef tank water was removed at 60 ± 15 min after tank feeding (tank skimmer off).
Two analytic techniques were used:
(1) The BSA-containing samples were analyzed using a Pierce Micro BCA Protein assay kit with the addition of a brief sample centrifugation step prior to UV/VIS analysis.
(2) The reef tank water samples were analyzed on a Shimadzu 5000 TOC Analyzer.
Four skimmers were tested:
(1) EuroReef CS80 needlewheel
(2) ETSS Evolution 500 downdraft
(3) Precision Marine ES100 venturi
(4) Precision Marine AP624 airstone
The test results show that all 4 skimmers were similar in performance:
(1) All 4 skimmers removed organic compounds at similar rates.
(2) All 4 skimmers removed over 80% of the serum in the BSA water.
(3) All 4 skimmers removed only 20% to 30% of the Total Organic Compounds (TOC) in the reef tank water.
None of the skimmers were able to remove much beyond 30% of the TOC in the reef tank water. Hypothesized is whether we are approaching the limits of foam fractionation.
tell me what you think :)

If you have good photos of commonly caught juvenile tropicals that you would be happy for us to use please let me know.

I am back from honeymoon and even though it's only one case (and not very scientific) I wanted to publish my findings...
I MOVED my 'very difficult to keep' 25l to a TOTAL NOVICE friend (not a reefkeeper or even bathwater for that matter) and back again this morning and guess what? EVERYTHING is OK!!! Who would have guessed...
Don't get me wrong... I'm not recommending anyone to do this... All I'm trying to say is, yet again, that the advice given on this forum is only that... ADVICE... And that means that it is only THAT persons (maybe a few more) personal experience (NOT RULES/LAW/THE ONLY WAY) and that it might not work for everyone...
There are various examples of people that have done everything to the tee as instructed here and things did not work for them... There are also examples here of people not doing things like stipulated on this forum and everything worked out fine (Just one of many examples is of a moderator here that acclimatized a new fish for the best part of 10min by dumping half a cup of water into the bag every few seconds and then emptying the LFS water from the bag into his system and guess what? IT WORKED)
WE ARE NOT GODS OF REEFKEEPING AND IT IS NOT THAT DIFFICULT A HOBBY!!!
If this thread convinces ONE newbie that this hobby is not as difficult as he/she thought (because of most other people on here) and makes them start a tank then I have accomplished what I wanted to... Showed people the other side of the coin...
Sometimes people on here make me so angry I just want to scream at them to get a life and then quit the forum. Then I realise that forums need all kinds of people to 'keep it real' and help people to see things from all possible perspectives and then I calm down and stay... Yes guys and girls, you'e stuck with me... :)
-
Brought some NSW back from Cintsa on the Wild Coast as a treat for my LS and tested it this morning... Here are the params I have tests for:
SG - 1.026
NO3 - 0
pH - 8.2
KH - 7.2
PO4 - 0
How excellent is that... Just one more reason to move that way (the new wife LOVES that whole coastline)...
You guys that live that side are SOOOOO lucky... We spent every low tide of our honeymoon checking out the tidal pools from Maphelane down to Cintsa and realised that if we move down there we would probably never set foot in a LFS again... Saw a feather star that the wife wanted to bring home so bad but I managed to convince her that we don't have the space...
Anyway, just wanted too remind you guys on that side of the world that you are REALLY lucky... Have fun and see you that side soon... ;)

I love this part of reef aquarium keeping, when all the critters start coming out of the live rock. It always amazes me when I'll have a piece of rock I think is just about dead, with no signs of life, and then gradually over time, one by one, the little guys start coming out. It's just fantastic!

The fish in my 1.5mx65cmx65cm tank are starting to reach adult size and are thereefore putting quite a burden on the biological filtration, with phosphate level shooting up to 0.25ppm. I've decided to plumb a Jo-Jo Slimline 750l tank into the system, to increase the water volume. It should roughly double it.
My question is, should I add sand into the bottom to increase DSB area or should I keep it bare for easy maintenance? Also, is this enough of an addition to make a difference?
Any other advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys
I am due to replace my test kits.
I would like some input or suggestions on new kits.
I need Mag, Ca, Alk, Phos and N03.
Any decently priced kits that include all of the above?
Or any specials on?
Thx :)

Hey guys
How long must I wait before I collect water after a red tide. I dont think its a bad red tide because I have not seen anything but quite a bit of blue bottle jellyfish washed out on the beach. I dont know if its because of the red tide or because of rough seas we have had. Can I collect water when it looks clean or should I wait?

I have currently a 3ft tank but will my ts1 skimmer and br70 np pellet reactor work on a 4ft tank? Only for a few months anyway.:1:

hi guys just wundering if my tank lights are good bright enough for a mix reef the depth is 45cm ive got 2xblue bulbs 1x pink 1x white all are t5 FHO 54watt and 1x 10000k 150w MH in the center does not spread the hole length of the tank just in the middel . i did this so i can have a high light area in my center and a low light are on the out sides .the idea behind this is so i can have low light corals at the top of the tank if i want just on the out side and strong light coarals center top or bottem so do i need more light or not ????or will this do pics below

Hi Reefers
Having some troubles with my skimmer, bought it second hand from someone. Was told where the water level should be set for best performance. Using it with a BOYU, model FP-38E pump and SONIC 9905 air pump.
For some reason my bubbles never get moved all the way to the top so that it can run over into the cup. I have moved the water level but then I keep ketting water in the cup. I have been running the skimmer for 24 hours now, and bubbles are still as white as can be. Tank has been running for about 2 weeks. all my levels of PH, NO2, NO3, KH, Ammonia are right, got 4 fish in tank for about a week also. (was advise by the LFS to add a few fish to help tank cycle).
Starting to worry about the fish now cause of the skimmer not doing its job. What can be the cause? the amount of air giong into the skimmer or might it be the pump on the skimmer, or both combined? or cause of the tank being so new(tank size 1000Lx450Wx550H) or is the skimmer F#$&'ed.
Regards:blush:

I have been looking at
LED lighting for a While.
And now after a unfortunate short this winter blowing most of my equipment and killing off most of my coral and fish I have a chance to play around with the
LED lighting.
My old lighting was 12 X 40W
T5s. 8 X 12000k and 4 X 20000K. This worked out to 480W and I dont think I had enough for 1800 X 600 and water 700 deep.
I ordered 2 X 20W 16000k 12V
LEDs and after a 12 week wait (11 of them customs) they have arrived. I am very impressed. I have only played around with them in the office and plan on setting them up on my tank this weekend. They are extremely bright. I plan on running 4 of these 2 X 20000K and 4 12000K. So thats 200w compaired to my old lighting of 480W and i think that it will be at least 3X brighter
Description:
20W 16000K 45mil
LED Panel for Aquarium
Colour temperature: 15800K
LED chips: EPILEDS EP-B4545V-A3 45x45 mil
DC Forward Voltage (VF): 10-11V DC
DC Forward Current (IF): 1000-2100mA max
Viewing Angle: 120 Degree
Intensity Luminous (Iv): 800-1400LM
Life span 30000 hours guarantee

Still busy building the housing and will post some more pick later on.

I got a light shock from putting my hand into the sump or DT quite a few times now. Decided yesterday to look for the problem. Got around 90V AC with one multimeter probe in the water, one against the floor. Then switched all off. Voltage gone. Switched everything on one by one. Voltage came back when switching on the power to the ATU.
Anyone has similar issues?
I suppose I have an insulation problem on the switch?

hey guys
I went to a pet shop in order to see different types of substrate to buy for my tank and the guy suggested to get crushed coral. He showed to me crushed coral in bag which was about 3mm
Is this good for a reef tank? Does crushed coral will affect the condition of the water?
Also would like to know if there is any formula to calculate how many kgs will be needed
Thanks

Hi guys, what top up switch can I use when I have a kalkreactor connected to my top up? i dont want to use the normal float switch as this sometimes gets stuck open and will surely cause a tank crash through a kalkreactor.
I there a switch available that is failsafe nad where can i get one?

So guys I was wondering my tanked cycled like 4 months ago and there was green algea everywhere and then it went away all of it and now there is brown algea all over the sand and I got 2 sandsifitng seastars and they are working great but then it comes back,
So my question is I've got a 1.8 meter light fitting with 3 150w metal halides and 4 t5 tubes 24w each so what I want to know is it maybe because the kelvin is only 10 000 that causes the algea

Hi everybody... i am a newbie at MA and have finally started a tank.Yeehaaa!
It has been running now for 2 months just about and I have 2 clowns, tomatoe clown, blue regal tang and today my first corals!! :yeahdude:
i have 2 cleaner shrimps but I notice today, since I added dual pro 2 T5's(wow what a difference) in addition to my T8's, that my Tang has a lot of white spots.
I was told the cleaner shrimps would clean it off but they are not.
What am I to do? Is it dangers to the fish? Should I start stressing??

As if putting one new tank together isn't hard enough, I'm putting together TWO! I want to build a 600mm cube and would like to learn from your mistakes. I was thinking slimlinme overflow with returns coming back in through the back pane. I want this to be an extremely neat cube with no pipes etc but also don't want tons of headaches. Has anyone got any plans for me of a system that has worked well for them? Anyone see any problems with the slimline fad?
-
I need to drain my sump to install devidersand I obviously don't whant to leave my tank without its sump for too long how long do I need to let the silicone cure befor I can re fill it?
-
I want to sell all my stuff and buy one cube
Size 90*90*(50-60)
Does anybody know of someone selling?
-
Last night I saw the horror of horrors growing in my tank. Currently I can see only one (roughly 1cm in length) and would like to get rid of it as quickly as possible before it grows to big. I was planning on taking the rock out and then chiselling around the aiptasia (not chiselling the anenome itself) but my concerns are if I remove the rock will it start releasing spores and will chiselling a chunk of the rock out solve this problem?
Note to self: only buy dead rock next time.
