Hi
Over the weekend I bought three female anthias. After acclimatising' them i put two in and then the last one. as i was putting the third one in the fish net got stuck in his mouth after a min or two we managed to get it out. problem is i dont know which one got stuck, anyway the one (i think she is one that got stuck) has been sitting on a rock hiding since i put her in. she doesnt come out to eat at all, she looks like she is breathing abit heavy. she did move earlier and she kinda looked 'dirty' had marks or something on her body. What should I do? Can anthias get white spot?
Thanks

Hey guys and gals.
I'm starting out and I need a few things to get going.
At the moment I need:
1x Skimmer(for a 270l tank, but as large as the budget will allow)
1x Sump(Preferably 3ft)
1x T5 Ballast
1x UV Sterilizer(not really necessary, but still nice to have)
If you have anything else that you feel I might need, let me know
I'm hoping to find these in PE, but if not I'm more than willing to pay for postage
I'm out of town until Saturday, but after that we can do business
Let me know if you have anything
Cheers

I bought 3 Energy Saver Lams today at the shop to use here at the bush for outside lights.
They are 45w Philips ECOTONE Lights. IT says on the side of the box:
Ultra bright solution for Professional use
Light output in Lumen = 3000
More energy saving in Efficiency (Lm/W) = 67
Better color in Color Rendering index = 80
Wide color in Kelvin = 6500
Fast Ignition = 1-2
Anyone know anything about these lights??
Can they be used in Marine Tanks??

Hey guys and gals
I need some advice with my stand. I want to have something built that is strong and at the same time allows me to have as big a sump as possible.
The tank dims are 1000x600x450, so it takes 270L
I was thinking doing a angle-iron frame covered in wood panelling.
My question in if I use standard 16mm angle, would it be strong enough to have just 4 feet or should I add 6 feet(3 in front and 3 in the rear)?
Also, what would a good height be? The tank is 600mm high, so I was thinking the stand should be 900mm high from the floor.
Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers
SP :)

Getting into this hobby was easy for me. My family owned a seafood business and I grew up playing with dead fish so it was natural for me to start a tank. Of course at 2 or 3 years old I needed a little help.
On fridays my Dad would bring me to the Fulton Fish Market in Manhattan which was the place that supplied seafood for all of New York.
The place was huge and the ships would dock there and the fish would be off loaded right into the street. There would also be huge sea turtles that were (unfortunately) destined to become soup.
Anyway, every once in a while in that mountain of fish you would find some small animal still alive like a crab, shrimp or even a seahorse.
My Dad would let me take those animals home and put them in some water. I only had fresh water so nothing lived more than a few hours but at least I got a taste of how amazing it was to actually take a living piece of the ocean and transport it to my home where I would stay up all night watching and probably trying to feed it.
I had more luck with the freshwater animals like catfish, eels and diamond back terripins. At least I could keep those animals alive.
In those days even a lot of the common freshwater fish we have now were not for sale.
I remember my facination when ever I would go to an aquarium store and see something new. Fish were originally sold in toy stores and called "toy fish"
There were no strictly aquarium stores because even the freshwater hobby was not common before WW2.
There were also no plastic bags so fish came in those little cardboard containers that Chinese take out places sell rice in.
When saltwater fish came out in 1971 I was in total awe and the only fish were blue devils. Imagine seeing a blue devil when for my entire life the only blue fish I ever saw was a blue gourami or a neon tetra. Blue devils blew my mind and I had to have them.
I would sit for hours starring at them just as I did when I was a todler looking at a dying crab in a glass of fresh water.
To this day I am still facinated by anything from the sea, especially something that I have never seen before. Thats the main reason I started SCUBA diving, that and finding lobsters. Now, at my age I have seen just about everything you can see related to the hobby but I still frequent stores in the hope I will find something new.
In a store I don't look at the dozens of yellow tangs, the schools of surgeon fish or the angels, I look behind the rocks and in sumps for the rare specimin that came in with other things and no one knows exactly what to call it. That is what I am looking for.
I have a few fish in my tank now that I don't know what they are and they are my favorites.
I am even more facinated by crustaceans. I put on my magnifying glasses and check out the shellfish (yes I look very wierd, it's a good thing I am married because this behaviour does not attract a lot of supermodels)
Hermit crabs are extreamly cool, they go to great lengths to get to obscure places looking for food even though they would probably do better just sitting on the bottom.
They hang up side down and seem to be struggling just to stay put. But I can see where they are coming from, we humans scale mountains just for the fun of it and do wierd things to attract a mate. They are such facinating creatures and so much more advanced than we are in certain traits.
I still have no idea how they find food but they find it all and never make a mistake. I have a bunch of them, I don't know how many but if I drop in a few pellets or a piece of clam and I see it on the gravel, in about 10 seconds I see all the hermit crabs change direction and head for the food. It will most likely be gone when they get there but how do thay do it? I doubt they see very well and the water in the tank is swirling all over the place. How do they know what direction it is? It goes right over my head and this is the stuff that keps me up at night.
I am amazed by all of this stuff. Why don't fish crash into the glass? It's their lateral line system but imagine having a radar system like that. A school of tangs can instantly dive into a stand of acropora coral and not one of those fish will get a scratch.
Maybe it's me but I love this stuff.
How do you people feel about this hobby?

Hi all,
I need to start gluing the PVC I've just purchased from Astore - now I just need to know which glue is "reef-friendly" and also, where to find it?

Hi,
I've found tank and equipment for sale, I've asked for more details on it but the following info I have:
4ft Marine Tank
2 compartment sump
2 x powerheads
Lid with 2 x blue and 2 x white lights and plug timer
Julbo Protein Skimmer
Water heater
Floating Thermometer / Specific Gravity Salinity
Canister Filter
Pump
Chemicals / supplements / pipes etc
As a 'starter kit' does this look good, how much would something like this go for?
Thanks
Dane

How well does your sponges grow?
If you have good growth of sponges in your tanks, please let me know and also if you attribute it to anything you dose/ or do.
(not the little white q-tip/calcerous sponges though)

After more than 3yrs of being out of the hobby (FOWLR) I have decided to start afresh on a mixed reef. Took me ages to come up with with what I presume to be a perfect setup for me, borrowing from ideas I have read in the threads over the past couple of weeks.
Tank Specs:
1300 X 650 X 600 (H) 550 (WL) 10mm Glass Euro Braced, currently on hold as I cant seem to find Den Braven Aqua Black Silicone in Durban. Tank will have a C2C with a bean animal overflow (thanks Dallas) (Still to meet with AOR on the workings of this).
Sump Specs:
1200 X 550 X 450 (H) 300 (WL) 6mm Glass and a huge DSB. My experience with marines is rather old school and after reading up on tank builds such as Adees who has gone back to DSB's has somewhat reassured me that I may not be doing things too old fashioned. I was considering a LR filled sump but my understanding is that I will have LR in my DT to do some filtration. Sump will be a standard three compartment sump (thanks Riaan) that will hold a NW200 Reef Octupus Skimmer, DSB with macros or an algea scrubber (pending GHA problems), 4800l/h Lifetech pump and Reef Octupus Phosban Reactor (I had issues with GHA in the past, traced it back to poor maintenace and odd tap water top offs. New system will be toped of with R.O. Kalk Stirrer on hold pendind setup.
Lighting:
2 X Dual 4ft Oddysea Light fixtures, didnt go quad as I planned on adding 2 150w MH from previous tank if I required. May get my hands on a complete light fixture with MH and a chiller, will see in the near future.
Circulation:
1 X MP10 which after seeing operate am rather skitish if this will be enough flow, if not will order another MP10W and a bluetooth kit for the MP10 to sync them or possibly a wave box. (thanks Afsal for allowing me to view your setup)
I am aiming at an easy to maintain mixed reef with easy to keep softies and LPS (will be going through Dallas's beginner corral list agian when im ready.
I consider myself a newb as I have no understanding on dosing trace elements and will be bugging you guys on every litle aspect from choice of fish to corals to dosing etc.
My must have's i.t.o of fish is a Powder Blue Tang , Bangai Cardinals, Clowns (nemo) and possibly a Regal, if the pros feel my tank is too small or my equipment is ineffieceint please shoot me down now before I make any mistakes.
To date I have built the sump and pics will follow shortly.
