2x 150w's or a 400W?

Hey guys!

One of my mates switched tanks this week and got hold of a 400W mh, so just for fun, we put it on the tank to see what it looks like.

First off, the tank is 700mm high.
Option 1: The fixture with the 2x 150's is almost on the water level.
Option 2: 400w mh, 50cm from water level.

Now even though we can cover the whole tank with the 400w at a lower level, the center brace gets too hot so it needs to be 50cm high.

In regards to colour, the 150's are closer to 10000K and are due for replacement. The 400w is a 14000k hence the extra blue.

Which option will be better? The 150's look brighter but that could be due to the colour temperature. Colour pop on the 400w is better due to the 14k.

(Note that both Mh's options are supplemented with 4x 54w T5's not in pic.)

How to get rid of brown cyano algae?

Hi guys so ive found out I have a massive problem and no its not diatoms.

Ive had a huge algea problem this last month so bad that my polyps cant even open,I have been doing some research and it is brown cyano algae,

How do I get rid of it,my water parameters are as follows:
Salinity 1.025
Nitrite 0
Nitrate between 0.2-0.8
Ammonia 0
Ph 8.3
Alkalinity 7.9 (know I have to get it up)
Mag 1170 (also low)
Calcium 420

So please if anyone can help me get these algae away with some advise please.
Urgent help needed Something's eating my Zoanthids

Hey guys! Something is eating my Zoanthid's tenticles and I don't know what. I did a fresh water dip on all of my zoanthids for 5 min to get rid of unwanted pest a week ago before I added them to my display. I fear It might be the fish and I also fear that they might get poisoned. I think It's the Tang because he is grazing allot.

Fish
1 Convict Tang (the size of a matchbox) I think It's the Tang coz he is grazing allot.
1 Blackspot Sergeant (the size of a 20 cent)

Tank
50 liters
2 Aquaclear 50 HOB filters
Heater
Live rock (I don't know how much but, It takes about 30% water volume)
No sump or refugium

I know It's a crappy tank but, I'm slowly building It up (getting my refugium and pumps on the 15th of this month.)

PS. It's only the one colony of zoanthids that is affected

Hey guys I am building up a reef tank :) I have used Live rock , Live sand in a deep sand bed ( sump) and NSW and its been running for a month and a half, I have cleaner wrasse , Shrimp ,clowns along with Zoanthids, fanworms , hermits etc. My nitrates are about 4 ppm ,and all parameters are great, just my nitrates are not down yet and my DSB is not mature yet , lots of organisms in it , but not mature ( 3mths at least i know) now I went to an awesome petshop today in Hillcrest and it has such a rocking Marine setup ,they have lovely stock and the guy mentioned why don't I add this Pro Aqua microbe Innoculant it can accelerate the maturity and add valuable benneficial microbes into my system fast. He said they did it on all their tanks , and had corals in them after a week, and its running well, now my questions is ....should I ? or should I not ?

I am more than happy to wait for the tank to mature , but this was offered and I dunno what to think of it ?

looking for a hydrometer,refractometer and live rock at reasonable (less that lfs) prices. anyone in CT selling?

** Been into the Tropical Tank seen for a while, and the marine side of fings caught my attention..***:biggrin:

Ok..so I've been thinking about starting this Thread.. and always postpone it... as I feel I need to research a bit more..now for one or other reason, I want to Post today..today of all days, when my mind is a blank...:P

At the moment I'm not sure on the size..actually I don't think I care whether it is 2feet, 6feet or 8feet...all I know is that I want a Tank that has an Algae Scrubber,

Sump..(thats my concern..space) and a Refugium and what ever else this Newbie has forgotten to add to get an "old school" Tank....:blush: I don't think I want the Cheato ball in Sump, but actual Refugium..and a Trickle System...?

This massive table top acro will make a beautiful centre piece for any sps aquarium. The coral is very hardy for sps and is in perfect health. Feel free to bring a water sample so that we can compare parameters, as once the coral is in your possession, I can obviously not refund your money should the coral perish. Calibrating a refractometer

Hi all,

I have used RO/DI water to calibrate my refractometer. My understanding is that RO/DI water should have a SG of 1.

I thought that there might be an issue with the calibration when it measured NSW to have a SG of 1.023, so I checked against RO/DI and it was 1.002. I set it to read 1.000 for RO/DI and it now measures NSW at 1.026 and my tank water at 1.025.

I would just like to confirm that what I have done is correct.... Thanks a bunch.
