Equipment List for new tank

Hi all,

Need your input on the following:

DT: 2000 x 1000 x 600 = 1100L
Sump 1500 x 700
Receiving Chamber: 200 x 700 x 500 = 70L
Refugium: 300 x 700 x 450 = 94.5L
DSB: 870 x 700 x 350 = 213.15L
Return Chamber: 130 X 700 X 300 = 27.3

System volume = 1504.95L

I know this exclude LR etc etc etc.

This is the initial equipment list:

Reef Octo PHR-100 Phos Reactor
Reef Octo PHR-100 Carbon Reactor
2 x Tunze 6105
Hailea HX-6550 Return Pump
Tunze Auto Topup

What do you think of the list?
Would the PHR-100 work or should I get the PHR-140?
I think the PHR would work well if I use high quality Phos and Carbon.

Hi ladies and gents... I have 2 beautiful spiny blue crayfish.. They are a bit 2 big for my tank. Does anybody want to swop for any small fish..? Please let me know.. Unfortunately i cant post up pics because my laptop is in for upgrading.. If you want pics, you welcome to leave your digits then ill mms you pics..

algae killing my tank

Hi guys so my tank is overpowered by a brownish dust algae,it comes of easily if I scrub it but it gets back within hours on sand and live rock,

I've lost a few corals already and I've tried everything,so I'm thinking is my fitration wrong?lights?

My filtration is as follows:
Got about 55kgs live rock+40kgs crushed coral
Got seachem matrix in overflow
Got my skimz sm 161 skimmer in compartment one with np reactor flowing in to it now
And got a few spunge type of stuff in compartment 2
And got return pump+heater and carbon reactor with seagel in it in compartment 3

Lights:
-3*150w metal halides
4*29w blue t5 tubes

Please any help as I'm battling any petshop to give me advise

Hi,

I am about to redo my sump to incorporate a DSB and a bigger skimmer (trying to move up to a reef tank).
I currently have a 1.2m FOWLR tank with about 15-20KG's of live rock.
The tank will be without a sump for about 48 hours while the sump is glued and cured.
Obviously this poses a problem for my fish who will be without a proper filter for a while. If I were to remove the biological filter media (crushed coral) and place it in a large net in the display tank with a powerhead running water over it and then place it back in the sump until the new media is colonised by bacteria, would the fish cope?

I am selling a few fish to reduce the Bio-Load. The fish that will remain in the tank are a scopa tang, striped bristle-tooth tang, three small perc clowns and a cleaner wrasse. Could I keep them in the tank during the change?

Hi guys,

So, I've decided to start again after having learnt many lessons most of which were from you guys.... I'm moving soon and need to break up this system and start afresh (but much bigger)..... Hehe... Heard that before?

System is: 1.2 x 450 x 600 high, corner overflow, 2 x sumps 600 x 500 each, Ts2 skimmer, Hailea 6530 return pump, 6 x 55w globes with ballasts, a couple of flow pumps, tank stand, canopy and livestock.

What constitutes a Reef Tank anymore?

yet another of my controversal threads, dont get offended, engage in healthy debate, enjoy and thanks for the soup!

"what exactly is a reef tank anymore"? (mods be gentle)

Is a reef tank is supposed to be a reasonable duplication of a natural reef? or is it becomming someones "Isaac Asimov-ish" like interpretation of a underwater scene from a distant planet?

an observation, as there are no "bragging rights" for growing tunicates, worms and feather dusters but there is incentive for bightly colored "shinny reef things" its as if "success' is measured in blue acros, not in a stable diversified reef tank, thats full of life

anyway
someone please tell me lest I keep spending money on these designer zoos & acros (and yeah my tank is headed there also)

This little guy is about the size of a R5 coin.

Every time I put it under the lights it migrates to a dark corner......
Eskom-proof return pump?

I came across this neat little pump.
Its used to fight veld fires and with a few modifications im sure it can be used as a return pump during power failures. Its powered by a 50cc petrol engine, is fully portable and comes with a set of bright yellow pipes. No mention was made of head height or flow but it looks like it might be able to replce the return pump and maybe also add a bit of flow to the tank.
Tank Connector

Hi All

Need some advise. Can you guys please tell me what connector I need for my DT Conner over flow to connect the pipes to the hole in the bottom of my tank, a picture will be cool if possible and where would be the best place in CPT Northern suburbs be to buy them.
It will have to be a 40mm fitting.
