The Red Corris Wrasse is a complete jerk and should not be in a reef tank. They flip crud over and disturb the dsb. I call mine El Diablo, because he IS the Devil... I hate that fish. He eats my clean up crew, no matter how much he gets fed. Flips rocks, corals, and even pries them off of their putty/mounts. Just noticed he's now gotten FANGS! He's impossible to catch. I get within view of the tank with a net, and he burries himself in the sand under the substraight. The jerk spits sand all over the corals. He'd be ok in a preditory fish only... I wouldn't even feel bad if he ended up as some other jerk's meal. It's a good thing I don't own spear fishing gear or a gun... I'd probably snap some time and shoot through the glass at him. Just sayin', I wouldn't ever recommend one of those fish. He's the bane of my existance.

Hi PPL
Just would like to know what is the effect on a tank with RO water with i high TDS.
I tested my TDS on RO unit water today.
OOPS, TDS was 63.
Very high.
But everything seems fine in my tank.
I got 3new membranes today and replaced the old ones.
To my knowledge i have to replace them every 6monts and the top membranes once every 2years.
Ive got a 6stage RO system cos i use the water for drinking as well.
Any tips or input welcome.

:slayer:Hi all,
While visiting my boet in Boca Raton, Florida, i fell in love with his 300 Gallon aquarium, so i've decided to start one as well but not as big. I've just purchased a 260L tank. Still very clueless how and where to start but i've got a mate, who introduced me to this forum, guiding me all the way. I'll keep you updated on the progress and ill post some pics as soon as i get started.

Hey there guys ... I have 2 x Samsung 32" Full HD Tv's for sale ... I bought these for a customer and now they have decided to go bigger for their cctv systems .... These units are still brand new sealed in their boxes and both are going for R500 less than what you would pay in places like Hi-Fi Corp or Game ..... The guarantee will be honored by my surveillance company and Samsung themselves will gladly entertain you as this is not grey market stuff .... The only pics I have are of the boxes as the units are still sealed so obviously don't have pics of the actual units but these are the labels on them .... These tv's have to go so if you feel you have a reasonable offer .. Let me know but like I said ... Do your homework and check if you can buy them cheaper than this in a shop ....
The 32" 3D 6000 series is going for R8000 and the 32" 5000 series for R5500 .... If you in Jhb or Durbs I can maybe organise getting it to you free but Cpt is best via courier and I can pay half the freight charges ....

Hi all.
I have been bitten by this saltwater bug!
I am a total newbie when it comes to marine tanks although I have been keeping tropicals off and on for the past couple of years.
I have acquired a Boyu MT-50 (80l) tank at a great price and intend to use it for my marine tank. I intend to keep Live Rock, 2-3 Invertabrates and hopefully if all is well after 3 months, 2-4 fish (Goby's and Clowns).
I understand that the current lighting will be totally inadequate for marine fishkeeping.
Can I add LED lighting to supplement the standard lighting and if so what specs am I looking at, considering the environment I want to create?
Is a protein skimmer a absolute necessity? I want to do this properly, and accept that it will probably be at least 3 months before I can stock any fishes so there will be no eccessive loads on the system.
What is the absolute bare essentials that I will need? - Substrate, test kits, additives, etc?
Kind Regards.
Shawn

Hi All
I put a small clam into my tank last week. I believe it is a maxima clam. I put him on the bottom of my tank and he was doing great. Always open showing beautiful colours, not gaping, very alert and responding to the cut out of light.
The clam has been moving itself slowly off the rock on which it came over the last couple of days.
This morning when I had a look at the clam I see it was lying on its side and the byssal muscle was left behind on the rock itself.
Can someone please advise if my clam is gonners or is this the natural way that clams would get around the tank and move to a place where they feel more comfortable?
Thank you!

Hi there everyone

Thread-Wheel" design and super efficient ATI-Sicce pumps produce an extremely dense water/air mixture that outperforms much larger skimmers while consuming less electricity and transferring less heat to the aquarium.
For every 3 parts of water each pump pulls in 2 parts air for an efficiency rating of approximately 67%. Most other skimmers on the market have an efficiency of less than 35%.
Power Consumption: less than 40 Watts/0.6 Amps per pump.

Hi Guys, I am at my whits end now. I fear that i have been beaten by this marine ich. I have 2 marine tanks, 1 is a jewel rio 125 that i have been running for about a year now(never had any problems or sickness, exept red slime twice so far) and a 1.5m tank that is running for 2 months now.Disater struck about 3 and a half weeks ago, In my tank i had/have 4 clarki clowns(2 black and 2 yellow), 2 damsils, 1 foxface, 1 gold rim surgeon tang, 1 adult emperor angel. 3 weeks ago my foxface got the ich, i then treated with metronidozole and the following it was gone:thumbup:, then a couple of days later my surgeon tang got it and all hell broke loose in the tank, from the surgoen it spread to my angel, foxface and clowns. I started the metronidozole again and the treatment went on for 2 weeks(no improvement) I searched for answers on the internet, forums, and consulted lps. I am now in the stage of hyposalernity, this process i did over 4 days, bringing it down from 1.022 to 1.018.(because i have anemome and pollops) at the same time still treating with metro. I am running at 1.018 for a week now. No results. I again consulted a few lps, and was advised to use Microbe-lift Herbtana in cojunction with microbe-lift Artemiss in 12 hour intervals, which im doing, started the treatment on friday along with hyposalernity. On saturday morning i lost my gold rim surgeon, sunday lost my emperor angel, and today im losing my 2 black clarkis.(yet, up until the other fish died they were eating when i fed them) I have tested my waters throughout all of this and all parametres were fine... Now the first thing you guys are going to say is why have I not setup a qt, well no space, because im running 8 tanks at the moment, with all my various wild caught malawi species(im a breeder). That is why i was looking for options in treating main tank. So what can I do PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all I am in the process of re-driling my tank for a bigger overflow going fron 2x25mm to 2x25mm +1x40mm. It was sugested to me yesterday that I might want to glue another piece of glass onto the tank to reinforce the hole seeing as there is so much more weight etc in the bigger plumbing.
What are your thoughts on this?

Hi guys, im new to MASA and found out about this forum on TASA the sister site where i am a active member. I am currently running 2 tanks, 1 jewel rio 125 and a 1.5m tank. It saddens me that i am only now getting to know this sight when things are going so bad in my 1.5m tank. I came extremely close to shutting down my 1.5m marine tank due to marine ich. I have posted my problem on the urgent help section, and knowing that there are so many members on this forum, im sure i will get the help needed to save my aqaurium. Hopefully the time im on the site i will be motivated, cause currently i feel defeated.:79:

So I have had enough with fighting WS with bows and arrows. I know things might become a bit tricky in the long run with certain things but today I went and spent some cash.
Bought a 3ft - 920l x 360h x 320width water height is sitting at 280.2mm
I am going to buy some 110m PVC tomorrow for some hiding areas. Do I really need any lighting here. It gets A LOT of natural sunlight during the day.
I am not sure if the no lighting helps with WS or not.
I am going to go the copper route, there just isn't anything else that I can find after researching that will KILL the WS. The bucket method works YES for sure but I would stress the crap out the fish.
So there is A LOT of debate around if you can remove the copper from the tank afterwards or not. I have read some new research and chatting to @
Adriaan if you run a good carbon reactor in the tank for say a week afterwards it removes the copper trace elements in the tank.
So some questions:
All the water in this tank was made Saturday - Salinity is sitting at 1025 and no Phos, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia etc. The salt I used was Red Sea Coral Pro salt.
Question
Do I catch the fish - drip aclimatize him for 1 hour and add him in, is that the correct procedure?
How long AFTER the fish is in the tank do I start with the treatment.
Here is my dilemma - REMOVE ALL THE FISH - that's like 25 fish and chuck them all into the 3ft tank? Wouldn't that stress them EVEN FURTHER by:
1. The catching them stress
2. 25 fish in a 3f tank?
The first fish going into the QT will be my fav fish my Powder blue - which is in a "QT" right now (it's my old DT which I am using with Herbatana - no help in THIS CASE not saying it doesn't work).
@
Achilles - My theory is right now he has a bad bout of WS, he is FAT FAT FAT eating like a little machine but has TONS of WS. My
THEORY is to get him rid of the WS in the copper, get him healthy, boost his immune system then introduce him into the DT. What do you think :)
So some pics of the QT:

Hi guys

Hey guys
Got my first inhabitants in my tank
4 x clowns (jungle aquatics buy 3 get 1 free)
These guys are only about 3 cm long each
So after "dripping" them for a few hours I put them in my 5 foot tank but they kinda struggling to swim against the current(wiggling there arses off but getting no where)
I have 2 sunsuns: 1 double barrel 12000 lph and 1 single 3000 lph and my 3600 lph return from my sump
So I put off my 12000 lph pump for the time been and they seem more "comfy" now
Is my original flow too much for these little guys??
they haven't quite found all the "caves " yet
How much flow can they take ? Can I put the big pump back on once they have explored the rest of the tank am just afraid I over exhaust them with the current flow
Any advice/ideas???

Hi all,
Since I shut my 900 cube I have been having salt water withdrawal symptoms.
My fish and corals went to Frans for a long holiday in Hermanus.
I’m still looking for a house to buy, so the monster tank is not up yet.
My wife and daughter areq missing our fish, so I decided to setup my 650 x 650 cube that will end up being a QT at a later stage.
The tank will be run without a sump, will do 20% water changes weekly with lots of bacteria dosing.
For now I will run one Tunze 6105 in the tank with a HOB skimmer. Lights is still a big surprise, so you will have to wait!
Picture of the stand being built by my dad:
Picture of the stand done
Picture of tank ready to be filled:
Time Line:
13:00 collected 200L water at 2 oceans aquarium
15:30 start stand build
20:00 transport stand and tank to my house
21:00 wash sand
22:00 start to fill the tank
23:00 found a leak in the overflow :(
00:00 installed heater and small flow pump.
I will seal the overflow again today and see if I can compete the fill tomorrow evening.
Going to visit Perky Pets this morning to buy some LR so I can get this baby rocking!
Will post some more later today!

Hey there guys...........so....ive been reading a lot about marine tanks the past week on this forum.....and today I bought myself a Boyu TL-450.I am a complete noob at this so Im taking this slowly.
Already the noob in me is showing cos like a dumbass I switched the heater on BEFORE the pump was on(didnt realise what I plugged in).........You can guess what happened next.....lol
So currently Ive got the pump running after I added some Bahamas Oolite live argonite reef sand...........going to let everything clear up nicely first.
So....Yes Ive probably did 20 things wrong already but im sure some of you guys will correct me and learn me some terminology so I dont sound like a complete idiot.....lol

Greetings,
Just saying hi to everyone here. I’ve had tanks for many years (never salt water) and have been out of it for some time now, but have decided to get back into it. I’ve been browsing the forums a lot and the posts have been extremely useful – thank you.
Currently IÂ’m designing a tank and what not and will post some questions soon, IÂ’m sure. IÂ’m actually not planning on doing a saltwater tank (I know, I know ) but will ask for input on sumps, overflows etc. from you guys (and ladies). Also planning on using C02 as the aquarium will be heavily planted. Current design leaves me with a 630 litre display tank.

Something I have been battling for a long time to understand, are the relationship between some supplements and balances between certain minerals we find in our seawater.
1.) Why do we need them in our aquaria?
2.) What type of Coral/Fish/Critters need it to grow?
3.) Substitutes for the DIY Enthusiast.
4.) How much of each we need in our aquaria to maintain a balanced system.
So, I did what most of us do, and started reading up on everything I could find wrt Magnesium, Calcium, Iodine and Strontium as well as the balance between them.
I will give credit at the bottom of the page to all the authors of these various articles.
This is my summary as to the above chemicals/additives and basically a guide to all the newbieÂ’s or interested parties:
Magnesium in Our reef Systems
Magnesium:
Magnesium is the third most abundant ion in seawater, behind sodium and chloride. In seawater magnesium is present at approximately 1285 ppm, hence most test kits refer to the right DKH for Magnesium to be between 1250 and 1350ppm.
Magnesium's primary importance in reef aquaria is its interaction with the calcium and alkalinity balance.
The primary benefit of Mg is that it allow calcium and bicarbonate levels in the water to exist at supersaturated levels. In laymen's terms, having high Mg allows you to maintain higher Ca/Alk.
Maintaining Mg levels is necessary to hold Ca and Alk levels where you want them.
Why do I say that??
Answer: Whenever calcium carbonate begins to precipitate, magnesium binds to the calcium carbonate crystals' growing surface. The magnesium effectively clogs the crystals' surface so that they no longer look like calcium carbonate, making them unable to attract more calcium and carbonate, so the precipitation stops. Without the magnesium, precipitation of calcium carbonate would most probably increase enough to prevent the maintenance of calcium and alkalinity at natural levels.
Fortunately , The primary source of magnesium in our aquariums is the artificial or natural seawater we use to run/start our systems and with which any water changes are performed. Another source of magnesium is fish food. Magnesium is present in many such foods at fairly high concentrations, but not enough to have a huge impact on magnesium levels.
Other needs for Magnesium:
• Normal calcium balance in organs
• Healthy muscles
• Healthy nerve transduction
• Healthy calcium balance in blood vessel

In addition to the magnesium used in the process of calcification, many (if not all) organisms take it up directly from seawater. Organisms ranging from bacteria8-10 to fish11 take up magnesium, but the amount is generally much smaller than that used during calcification. In many cases, there is so much magnesium in seawater that the organisms expend more effort pumping excess magnesium back out than they do trying to take it up.
|
Ref: Do-It-Yourself Magnesium Supplements for the Reef Aquarium by Randy Holmes-Farley - Reefkeeping.com
So you want to know the meaning of the big word:
calcification???
Calcification:
Hermatypic coral species are those which form reefs containing the unicellular algae called zooxanthellawhich can have densities of up to 1 million cells per cm2.
These algae need to have light to be able to carry out the process of photosynthesis, using the carbonic gas dissolved in the sea water, nitrogen and mineral phosphorus to produce the organic matter required by the polyps.
By causing a shift in the carbonate balance, they promote the precipitation of the calcium carbonate on which the coral skeleton is based, and thus induce the process of CALCIFICATION.
I have always been adding Magnesium and kept them at the “highish” DKH range, mainly to boost the growth of coralline algae as it has high magnesium content.
On the table illustrated below, we can see how much Magnesium content we can find in Corals etc
Table 1. Magnesium in Calcium Carbonate Skeletons Organisms Magnesium content of skeleton (weight %) Reference Corals: Suborder Asterocoeniina and Faviina 0.07 - 0.36%
Suborder Fungina 0.095 - 1.22%
Fungia actiniformis var.
palawensis 0.091%
Suborder Caryophylliina 0.18 - 0.21%
Suborder Milleporina 0.12 - 0.53%
Millepora sp. 0.12 - 0.53%
Suborder Stolonifera 2.98 - 3.52%
Family Tubiporidae 2.98 - 3.52%
Tubipora rubrum 2.98 - 3.52%
Family Dendrophylliidae 0.05%
Family Porites 0.095 - 1.22%
Porites lobata 0.40 - 1.22%
Family Pocillopora 0.34%
Family Dendrophyllia 0.05%
Gorgonia: Eunicella papillosa,
E. alba,
E. tricoronata, and
Lophogorgia flamea 2.2 - 2.7%
Other Organisms: Coralline algae in general >1%

Lithophyllum and
Lithotamnium 2.0 - 2.8%
Calcareous alga:
Corallina pilulifera 4.4%
Benthic marine Ostracoda (crustaceans) 0.5 - 1.3%
Coralline algae that normally packs a large amount of magnesium into their calcium carbonate deposits has been shown to incorporate less magnesium when the magnesium content of the water is reduced.
Quote:
How does magnesium impact the balance of calcium and alkalinity in reef aquaria?
In order to answer that question, one has to have a basic understanding of the calcium and carbonate systems in seawater. These systems have been discussed in detail in a variety of previous articles, so I won't go into them here in great detail. In short, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is supersaturated in seawater, meaning that given enough time calcium ions will interact with carbonate ions and precipitate as calcium carbonate. If you push the concentration of either too high, CaCO3 will start to precipitate. Magnesium interferes with this process, permitting both calcium and carbonate to be elevated above where they would be in the absence of magnesium.

And now for the substitute in the Commercially bought Magnesium Supplement:
03 Basic Supplement Solutions:
Quote:
|
1. Using Epsom salts only, dissolve 8 cups Epsom salts in 3.8lt of water, and use that to supplement magnesium in amounts determined by using this calculator link shown below. This recipe is the least preferred of the three, but can be acceptable if used for small amounts of supplementation, or if combined with at least 30% water changes per month. It is also a more reasonable choice if calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) are used in large amounts to supplement calcium and alkalinity.
|
Quote:
2. Using MAG flake only, dissolve 8 cups magnesium chloride hexahydrate in one gallon of water, and use that to supplement magnesium in amounts determined using this calculator below, with the entry "Randy's Recipes 1 and 2 Versions A and B," and ignore for this purpose what those designations mean. This recipe is adequate, but not quite as balanced as #3 below. This choice is not a good way to go if calcium is supplemented by calcium chloride, because together they will force chloride excessively high.
3. Using both Epsom salts and MAG flake, dissolve 7¼ cups MAG flake and ¾ cup Epsom salts in one gallon of water, and use that to supplement magnesium in amounts determined using this calculator below, with the entry "Randy's Recipes 1 and 2 Versions A and B," and ignore for this purpose what those designations mean. This recipe is preferred, but its advantage over recipe #2 is minimal in most cases.

In very high overdose cases, the 1st you will notice, is snails that might be dying, especially stomatella snails

Hi all,
My tank has yet to be completed. I have built the stand and glass structure myself having had experience in building one before. I am amazed at new technology and obviously have a lot to learn. My tank is 2000 x 600 x 600mm with a sump tank. The one question I have is whether to use LED lighting and if so what type and capacity?
Regards
Don

Hello everyone!
I have a few questions regarding collecting sea invertebrates and other organisms. about 6-8 months ago I bought a saltwater fish tank for my school biology lab. We did much fundraising and finally had the ability to purchase fish and amaze my fellow peers in the high school!
I recently just returned from my holiday break, and my teacher and I are wishing to display marine invertebrates from along the coast of Cape Town to give student the feel for what amazing creatures we have the ability to see. The only problem is how to start this.
I was wondering if I needed a permit to collect the invertebrates, what invertebrates are best to be kept, and how exactly to collect them? I do have a senior project coming up where I will be presenting the idea of global warming and human impact on the oceans. I thought if I could get some marine invertebrate in for this it would be amazing for my creative element!
Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Vertex has some candy for you. Guaranteed low-cal!
Vertex Vectra - Skimmer-Neck Cleaning System
Finally, an affordable solution to keeping your skimmer neck clean. Instead of dismounting your skimmer collection cup every few days, to wipe the slime from the inside of the neck, the Vertex Vectra will swipe through this efficiency reducing coating as often as you wish. Regulated by an aquarium computer or simply placed on a timer, the Vectra will help maintain fullest efficiency from your skimmer, while sparing you the grimy hands.
The Vectra is a two-part product consiting of the Vectra Engine, which is a standard motor used for all skimmer-size variations, plus the Skimmer-Lid, which is ordered seperately and available in various sizes to fit Vertex Alpha Cone Skimmers, as well as other models (Bubble King, etc). We offer 150mm, 160mm, 180mm, 200mm, 250mm, and 300mm diameters, which correspond to the diameter of the acrylic skimmer cup. The size 180 fits the Alpha Cone 170, as example, which has a 180mm cup diameter. The squeegee is adjustable to various neck diameters. Once again, Vertex sets a new standard!
Vertex Polypropylene or Nylon Filter Socks
Smartly packed in a standing carry bag, perfect for check-out display sales, the Vertex Polypropelene and Nylon-Filter socks come is various sizes and filter grades from 100-300 micron. The best quality in pre-filtering.
Available in: Polypropylene: 11cm ring/30cm long, 200µ; 18cm ring/30cm long, 200µ; 20cm x 40cm, drawstring, 100µ; 20cm x 40cm, 200µ; Nylon: 11cm ring/36cm long, 300µ; 18cm/36cm, 300µ.
Vertex Magnetic Probe Holder
Very smart-looking and watersafe. An acrylic holder for up to 3 probes, with titanium screws to fasten the probes in their slots. Nice strong magnets! Slots: 12mm.
Vertex Acrylic Cleaner Magnet
A small cleaner magnet designed for nano or similar sized tanks, made of clear acrylic and stainless steel. Velcro-type cleaning surface. Two sizes: the Simplex is only 1cm x 1cm, while the Duplex is 2cm x 4cm. Same clean and smart aesthetic as the Probe Holder. Nice packaging makes it especially attractive at the check-out.
Vertex Titanium Grounding Poles
Like the name says, these will ground the aquarium from stray voltage. An often overlooked safety feature. Availble with plugs for the UK, Australia and Europe. A highly recommended safety accessory. Simply mount with the included suction cup in sump or/and aquarium (or where ever the electrical items are working in water).

So, last night was a bit busier than normal for me, I had a small problem with my big return pump. It's an Ocean Runner 6500. I got a phone call yesterday afternoon while waiting to pick up my daughter from her afterchool activates, "Dad, something is wrong with the tank", I honestly think that is the worst phonecall one could ever receive, you just know it can only mean impending doom and lots of clean up work to do. So anyway, apparently all of the water was still in the tanks, so that was a bit of a relief.
Got home and found my return pump was not working. Weird. Tried to spin the impellor, it felt a bit tight and not very smooth so I thought maybe something had got jammed in there. Out came the towels and so started the horrible operation of contorting my body into all manner of weird positions to remove the pump from the sump, these pumps are monstrously huge and frikkin heavy.
And here was the result of my investigation....an exploded impellor!!!
How does that happen? Twice? Yes twice, I have 2 impellors from OR6500 pumps that this has happened to.

Hi All
Can someone please tell me what could be wrong with my brain.
Its not opening. I bought it yesterday from a LFS and took it home put it in the tank and it was fine. Now today when I turned the lights on it didnt open at all.
Its still has its red and green colouring but is not opening.
My clams, tooth coral, mushrooms, bubble coral, zoo's, toadstool, star polyps, are all open just not that one.
Is this usual? How long do they take to adapt?
Thanx in advance!

OK so I have been busy for 2 days trying to figure out what I need to start with and I came up with this.
List of things I might need:
-An Aquarium and a Stand (I'm aiming for a 150L to 200L Deep tank).
-Aragonite Substrate (Live Sand + small sand + rough sand).
-Dry Rock and/or Live Rock.
-RO/DI Unit (Reverse Osmosis filter).
-Salt Mix (Stuff you buy in buckets).
-Heater or 4.
-Thermometer.
-Hydrometer (For water density).
-Power heads (Water Pumps + Wave Makers, for random water flow).
-Test Kits (for Salt-water use) Like 10 of these things. Ammonia, Nitrate, Calcium etc...
-Salt water Mixing Buckets (Brand new and only used for salt water)
-Reef Grade Lights (OOOOO Well this is a whole subject on it's own, complicated)
-Sump + accessories (Bio-filtration tank)
-Return Pump
-Overflow in tank
-PVC Piping (plumbing)
-Protein Skimmer ( Not sure if I need this but it would seem I do).
-Time, Money, Patience and a love for the aquatics.
Is this about right?

Hi guys, I'm a new guy from Springbok, Northern Cape. I have a marine tank +- one year. I have plenty of problems in the beginning, but now its up and running with hardly any problems. I've build my own filter 200liter and works perfect. I get my water from the sea. The sea is about 170km from Springbok. I transport 1000l per trip. I will soon put photos on of my marine tank. Cheers

Hi I love the look of sps and have had one test frag in my tank for about 3 months now seems happy with the lighting ect so now I am looking for a few more colorful small frags if any one has some going cheap my tank is primarily local specimens but unfortunately the regulations don't allow us to collect sps so they unfortunately have to be foreigners ;)

Hey guys.
Thought i would start this thread for all the new guys....(and me).
What is the difference/purpose between wet and dry skimming?
Pro's and Con's of either form of skimming?
And then lastly, will it not be beter instead of one over rated skimmer, to have 2 slightly smaller skimmers. One skimming wet and the other one skimming dry??
Or will that cancel eachother out?
All coments welcome!

Looking for some dead “live” rock in cpt. Anyone have to sell or know of an LFS that sells.
-
Posted: January 25th, 2012, 8:21am CST by JDV
Hi All
I need advice please. I need -+ 30kg of live rock or more for my tank. I was thinking of buying 10kg of live rock and 20kg of dead rock and seed it with the live rock.
I would like to know will this work? How long does it usually take before it becomes “live” and where in CPT can I buy dead rock. I don’t mind if my cycling takes a bit longer than usual
As I have some home renovation project going on so it will give my budget some time to recover before I start buying my precious livestock. :confused1:

Hi,
My friend needs urgent advice.
His BTA split last night and they moving around the tank but when he got home today he found his tank went milky in colour.
We can't see how the nennies are doing as the tank is to milky. Fish seem to fine for now.
We did notice a amonia and nitrite spike in the water.

Hey,
"Upgrade the lighting" is all I hear but how and with what? My tank is a Boyu MT40
[www.boyu.us]
The light with everything put together
What is underneath once the plastic guard and reflector is removed
Written on the light, "PL - 18W 220V/240V/6400K"
The tank with light on.
I have zero experience with lighting of fish tanks. :whistling: I'm planning on beginner easy corals and I want to keep the hood;
advice please people :yeahdude:

Hi guys,
Feels like ages ago when I decided I wanted to setup a marine tank again. Unfortunately due to circumstances, this was not possible till now. So with great joy I can now say: I am finally setting up my tank.
I purchased the following equipment:
200 liter cubicle in wooden cabinet. (600x600c600 excluding extra internal sump filter)
Internal and external sump filter system.
Red Sea Prism protein skimmer.
Coral lighting plus two lights in the sump area.
2 x 1000 liter/hour pumps.
Intermittent switch that runs 2 x wave pumps.
I got it all setup and purchased some black aragolife for the sump and display tank.
Got some base rock and a few pieces of live rock in as well.
Been cycling for a while.
I put in two clowns today as well and saw a small black snail made its way probably via the live rock. :)
I'll post some more pics tomorrow.
-

Hi all,
I need your input on the following:
Tank will be 2000 x 1000 x 750 (water level at 700).
I will be running 2 Tunze 6105's in the tank, but would like to add a Tunze wave box as well. I would like to create a wave effect in the tank.
The tank will be braced at the top.
The question would be on glass thickness, can I use 12mm or should I use 15mm or even thicker glass? I need to make sure the glass can handle the stress of the wave effect.

Would something like this benefit the guys asking how to hatch their own Brine Shrimp..? I found this the other day and wasn't sure if it's viable..
[URL="

Amazon.com: Hatch n Feeder - Brine Shrimp Hatchery: Pet Supplies
Quote:
This one-of-a-kind brine shrimp hatchery is designed to hatch brine shrimp eggs and then dispense the baby brine shrimp (napulii) directly into the aquairum. Provides highly nutritious live food to your fish. Easy to set up and easy to use, your fish will benefit greatly. Works with fresh and salt water aquariums. #TM1198
Comes With:
- Hatching Unit
- Measuring Spoon
- Plastic Syringe
- Cleaning Brush
- Air Line Tubing
Directions for using the Brine Shrimp Hatchery- Before setting the Hatchery up, clean it under running warm water. Do Not use soap or detergents since it can leave harmful residue. Rinse it well with cold water.
- Connect air line tubing to air pump and Hatch’ N Feeder. Press the suction cup holder firmly against the glass wall of the aquarium.
- Set Hatchery in 79 degree to 81 degree dechlorinated water. (Rate of hatching is temperture dependent, the higher the water temperature the faster the eggs will hatch).
- Submerge the Hatchery, filling the Hatchery with tank water.
- Be sure the Hatchery is positioned properly. The water level indicator must be level with the surface water.
- Add 4 small spoons of eggs to the egg chamber. Use small end of measuring spoon to measure out the desired amount of eggs.
- Turn air pump on, 3-4 small bubbles per second. It is important to keep the air flow rate low, too high of air flow will cause the eggs to splash against the sides of the hatchery.
- Wait 1 hour for eggs to rehydrate before adding salt to the hatchery.
- Add 5 large spoons of synthetic sea salt or non-iodized table salt to the egg chamber, using the large end of spoon. Synthetic sea salt is recommended because of the buffering abilities.
- Gently swirl any eggs still at surface in egg compartment. Don’t worry if eggs remain in collection chamber since they will hatch there also.
- The brine shrimp larvae will start hatching in about 18 to 26 hours depending on the water temperature.
- As the larvae hatch, place a light over the perferated dispenser. The larvae will swim towards the light since they are phototactic and are drawn to the light.

HI
iv got a crab and a critter [i think] in my tank not sure if they safe?
crab
critter?

I know this has been discussed often, but having QT'ed the fish and they were fat, munching and no WS, now in their new tank with new tank mates there is obvious a little territory setting.
Now what I noticed is the new fish started getting some WS. I know WS comes from stress and yes by trying to find some new territory they going to get bullied.
I really don't want to QT them again and stress them.
I know we can't get our tanks WS perfect so some comments.

Hi
I wanted to upgrade my skimmer to a TS2 but my skimmer chamber is too small for it. So I was wondering if I can get a TS 1 and put that in my skimmer chamber and then put my Dymax in the last chamber. Will this work? I read on other forums and sites that it will work because you basically doubling the surface area. My tank is 270L with 70L sump and almost 40kg live rock.
-
Hey all,
Seems someone up high wants me to get a marine tank... I met a guy who got a Boyu nano tank and didnÂ’t want it, and as he didnÂ’t know anything about fish, he was selling it at an unreal price..
So now I got a black 32l Boyu MT40! I'm so blessed to have found the deal.. It has 4 chambers at the back, with the last one housing the pump (550l/h), a “18W” light that says 6400k on it, (means little to me) it also has 2 fans over the chambers. Everything is in great condition and works.
@
dallasg has already helped me so much by giving me a 18l Jebo tank that I'm planning a shrimp for.. But although I had a tank already, I snatched the chance, spent the money and went for the bigger tank, thinking I can keep a little fish now too :)
Here is a link with the tank's specs;
I like pictures

Not planning on keeping those sponges in there don't worry
I took the whole hood apart- partly to clean out dust, partly ‘cause I was curious about how it worked and mostly because I like taking things apart :P here is what is says on the light

Here it is put together again-
Better stop taking pics, as somebody is hungry.. My little friend for 7 years :)
I understand the very basics of salt tanks, except lighting for corals. If you guys could help me with specific info on the most cost effective way to upgrade the lighting for some easy beginner corals? What exactly would you do, if it was your tank and your passion for fish had to share finances with your passion for horses? :whistling:
What is the best thing to do with the chambers at the back?
Thanks for reading

Being summer and all I was doing some hunting around for ways to cool my tank and I think I had a lightbulb moment.
Surely I could just use the backside of my sump and stick a aluminium heatsink straight onto the glass then pop a few fans onto the heatsink and presto!! Think ill get some diy done and post the outcome. It seems to be a logical theory :whistling:
Anybody out there tried this? Or got a better idea? The idea is to cool the tank off without taking up more space or pumping water through a cooling area etc etc. If it works then heatsinks can even be shoved onto the rear of the tank as well, eliminating the need for a big, expensive chiller sitting next to my tank.

Ok, I've read on a few threads that banana's can be used to entice fish that are not eating so today I went home at lunch time and while snacking on one I decided to stick a piece in (not that any of them are not eating, just wanted to test the theory), all the fish, especially the triggers, went... well...... BANANA'S!!
My question is, are there any consequences in feeding small amounts (like pinky finger nail size) to the fishes?
Anybody else try feeding banana's?

I think my six line wrasse ate my hermit crab. I see the shell the hermit used to live in, but no hermit, and the six line is looking very fat and guilty. Of course I could be imagining the whole thing. Could an adult six line eat a little hermit crab, about the size of your thumbnail?

Hi all,
If you want to run a remote engine room, but can't gravity feed your sump from the tank. How do you get the water from your DT to your engine room?
-
hi guys
just a quick question concerning calcium reactors?im going to be decreasing the amount of water in my sump because my sump cant hold the gravity feed and always over flows so that would mean i will have 90litres of water in my sump with about 15kgs of live rock! my tank is just over the thousand litre mark and has around 100kgs of live rock in it(maybe more)! now for my question?
can i run a calcium reactor thats rated at 800litres and tweek it that the drip rate is greater so i will get the required alkalinity levels?
just looking at cheaper options as im a student!
can you guys give me ideas on models and makes to use?
thanks in advance

Does anybody have a similar problem? Mine has been running for about 2 weeks now and from year it started smelling? Not full of algae either, has some brown algae here and there.

hi guys any one feeding there fish wit pellets
is it good or bad guys
any advise

Keith, I went searching for the one you gave me, and eventually found it. Thanks again for it.
Due to it raining here (big time) for the last couple of days, I took the book and read (and studied) it from back to front.
Just finisehd with the mouth watering Aquarium layout of David's tank at the back- head still spinning due to trying to follow all the complex'ed pipework.
I also understand the Specific Gravity, Salinity-especially where this comes from, PH,Phospahates, etc way better than what I thought I did.
And I must say that all the specs and Comparisons wrt products is very helpful.
Now....... I am in line for a couple of things- sayeth the financial manager- and am very interested in some of the reactors, evaporator systems, food, pumps etc.
Any website where we can peruse over the prices??? Or maybe a price Brochure??

Forums and Aquariums are both new to me :) There is a lot I need to learn. I have always loved fish and for the first time I am brave enough to start my own tank. I am buying a Red Sea Max 130D with approx. 20kg liferock from a friend. I have to research a lot of the information - I do not understand all the abbreviations etc. but am sure I will learn fast. Hope you guys can help when I get stuck...

Hi All
I am a first time Marine Aquarium enthusiast and four months ago decided ( with the help of Ralph at Hillcrest Pets & Aquarium) to convert a spare Jebo338 into a suitable "training tank" - before diving in head first and wasting money and time.
To date my tank has been very successful and I have 2 clowns, a Valentini Puffer and Skunk Cleaner Shrimp. I put in a Hermit crab and small starfish and they too have done well. I cannot have any corals, anemones etc as dont have a protein skimmer and all the correct lighting.
I am wanting to expand and am keen to go the all-in-one set up such as the Red Sea or Aquaria models, and would appreciate any advice from fellow enthusiasts.
One good lesson I have learned in the past 4 months is "dont fuss" too much over the tank. My salinity levels are always around 1.025/6 and I check the other minerals/ammonia etc... once a month. They results are always within the acceptable range.

Hi guys, does anyone have an old tank as a freebee or for small cash, that I could use for a new project?
Target is to build an insulated tank for rockpool inhabitants.
The bigger, the better as a big water volume doesn't heat up so quick. But 1.7m is the maximum. Height or depth is not so important. Scratches on glass are also not a problem. If it is really bad, I would replace the front screen. Stand for the tank would be brilliant.
This idea bugs me whenever I look into a rockpool. I want to build a system, which will be insulated as good as possible as it has to be an energy friendly system, which should run without constant cooling by a huge chiller.
Will do a thread here on MASA to share the build.

Hi guys so like you guys know I've had a massive algae problem,I've lost just about al my corals.so since then I've done heaps of water changes and supplement and it looks much better.but now I've got like a tips of dust all over live rock in my display tank,I've read that np pellets make nitrate and phosphate into bacteria,so my guestion is,is this bacteria maybe the dust like in my tank?
And if it is that it makes to much bacteria in my tank how do I get rid of it?

I'm curious because I had an incident back in November but my wife & I still talk about it.
Her favorite fish which happens to be a Piccasso Trigger was absent from feeding one morning. I thought nothing of it maybe he was chilling somewhere. So the night I get home I still didn't see him. I then decided to throw in some food just to make sure again. After scouting the whole tank I see the mesh on the overflow is missing? I thought its not possible,he cant fit in there (32mm).
I then told the wife he is missing, she got upset. Told me to check the pipes and I said but everything is running normal still. After much thought we realised it can only be there (yes she was right).
I go to close the ball valve and it wouldn't budge. It then hit me...Not knowing whether he was alive or not I quickly shut everything down and got a torch to see up the pipe and there he was head up (against the flow).
He wasn't moving so assumed he was dead. I took the pipe to toilet and sprayed water through but wouldn't move...poked it with a acrylic tube to push it down and still nothing. By then I thought oh well sadly...
So I go the garage and unsure if I had extra fittings I pull out the heat gun to try and loosen things up. That didn't happen as the pipes were just softening so I twisted it and as it opened there this fish (called ZEB) was gasping for air. Man I couldn't believe it but just as fast as that thought sprung to mind I was up and running for the sump. I blew air into it and out he shot but he was clearly out of it. Bouncing off the glass as if he were blind.
Then I thought i'd put him back in the DT so it would be familiar for him but still bounced along for about 15mins.
He came around a little later and back to his usual munching ways.
Now there was a big time lapse from being in the water and out. So I still don't know how he survived all of that.

How did you discover reef keeping, and how did you get started? Was it Nano-Reef.com, a friend, or a local fish store? What was hard about getting started? What would you have done differently?
-
Almost every a time reefer gives his/her water parameters it is:
Salinity 1.025
This lack of understanding and continuous misquoting is driving me nuts. It highlights how many reefers do not know the difference between Salinity and Specific Gravity.
Because we are keeping salt water aquariums the first most important parameter to test, measure and understand is salinity and how we measure it. Contra to what most reefers believe it is a little more complex than just taking a refractometer or hydrometer reading or a ms reading if measuring electronically.
Here is a post by Broomer5 from Saltwaterfish.com that explains the difference.
Salinity vs Specific Gravity
"Thought I'd post this since it took me an hour to think about and write down for another thread.
The whole salinity vs specific gravity issue is not too tough to figure out. It all depends on the instruments used to do the measurements, what temperature they are calibrated for and which engineering unit you prefer to go by.
Salinity is expressed in parts per thousand ( ppt ).
It's just a measurement of the weight of the salt/minerals compared to the weight of the pure water.
Normal seawater is typically 35 ppt in most areas of a reef.
It could be 35 grams of salt per 1000 grams of water.
It could be 35 pounds of salt per 1000 pounds of water.
It could be 35 tons of salt per 1000 tons of water.
You could even use your own body weight as an engineering unit.
I weigh about 175 pounds.
I could easily say that the salinity of seawater is 35 broomer5's of salt per thousand boomer5's of water.
The weight ratio of salt (solids ) to water ( liquid ) is 35 TO 1000
Using ppt as the units then - the salinity would be considered to be 35 ppt at ANY temperature.
SPECIFIC GRAVITY on the other hand is not a weight to weight comparison. It is a weight to volume comparison.
When we talk weight to volume ~ we are talking DENSITY.
Density is just how much something weighs compared to how much space it takes up.
Picture a little clear acrylic cubic box that measures 1cm x 1cm x 1cm on the inside.
Fill it with pure water.
It now contains 1 cc ( cubic centimeter ) of water.
This little clear box of water contains exactly 1 milliliter of water.
1 cc = 1 ml
Now if you could weigh just the water in this little box ~ How much would the water alone weigh ?
The answer is IT DEPENDS.
The actual weight of this volume of pure water will depend on the temperature and the atmospheric pressure.
The metric standard for weight is grams.
It just so happens that this little clear box of water we have, if it's temperature was 4 degrees C ( 39.2 F ) and it was at sea level where the atmospheric pressure is 1 atmosphere ( 14.7 psi ) then the 1 cc of water ( 1 ml ) would weigh in at a whopping 1 gram.
In other words ~ 1 cc of water is 1 ml of water and weighs 1 gram. Were talking PURE WATER here.
This is how people came up with the term "Specific Gravity"
The DENSITY of water ~ how much it weighs ~ for a given VOLUME is referred to as the SPECIFIC GRAVITY.
In our pure water example above - the specific gravity would be 1.000
1.000 gram of pure water in a 1.000 cubic centimeter container.
Now the tricky part.
Water ( in a LIQUID state ) expands and contracts with temperature changes.
The warmer it is - it expands.
The cooler it is - it contracts.
When water expands or contracts - it either takes up more volume or less volume. But the amount of salt in the sample does not change. Only the volume of the water changes.
The ppt stays the same.
So ......... if we're using specific gravity as our measurement - we need to always look at the temperature of the saltwater too.
Specific gravity is a measurement of the WEIGHT of salt to the VOLUME.
Specific gravity is a measurement of the saltwater's DENSITY as compared to DENSITY of pure water - for the same volume of each.
There are a ton of charts on the internet, and in most any decent marine aquarium book. I can send you a chart if you want a good one. Be careful though - there are some contradicting charts floating around out there.
We'll use 3 different temperatures as examples, and the chart goes something like this.
At 60 degrees F
35 ppt = 1.026 S.G.
At 70 degrees F
35 ppt = 1.025 S.G.
At 80 degrees F
35 ppt = 1.023 S.G.
As you can see - the salinity is the same for each example.
It's still 35 ppt
But as the temperature goes up - the specific gravity goes down.
This is simply because the water expands at a higher temperature - and the density must therefore change as well.
Back to our little clear acrylic box of saltwater now.
The box is full of saltwater with a salinity of 35 ppt.
At 60 degrees F - the saltwater in this little box now weighs 1.026 grams.
At 70 degrees F - the box of same saltwater weighs 1.025 grams.
At 80 degrees F - the box of same saltwater weighs 1.023 grams.
The temperature of the saltwater MUST BE considered when using specific gravity as the measurement.
Okay you say - How does all of this crap mean anything to me and my marine tanks ???
You need to see what TEMPERATURE your hydrometer is CALIBRATED for.
Most refractometers or hydrometers are calibrated for liquids at a given temperature. The swing arm units like FasTests - I don't know what they are calibrated for. I don't like using them for that reason - plus they don't seem to give me good results.
They're okay if that's all you have, I still have one too.
The refractometer I use is calibrated for 68 degrees F.
The floating glass hyrdometer is calibrated for 75 degrees F.
What you need to do then - is measure the mixed up aerated saltwater with your instrument and thermometer, and write both values down on paper.
Then refer to a specific gravity vs. temperature chart - find your temperture you just wrote down and see what the S.G. is for that given temperature.
From a good chart for the marine hobby - you will also be able to determine the PPT salinity as well.
I like to mix my IO and RO/DI water to a salinity of 35 ppt.
The actual specific gravity of that batch of saltwater may be differerent - depending on the actual temperature I read on my thermometer, the instrument I use for S.G./Density and the chart I'm looking at to do the conversion.
Normally - I heat the RO/DI water with a heater - get it up around 78 -80 F ( my tank temperature ) mix in IO saltmix at 1/2 cup per gallon freshwater - toss in a little more salt and let it run overnight.
Then the following day - when I plan to do the water change.
Get out my tools - take the two measurements, thermometer and refractometer - look at the chart and tweek it up or down with a little more salt or a little more fresh RO/DI.
After doing this several times - I get lazy too - repeat the same procedures as I have before, get it as close as I can - and move on from there.
It doesn't have to be exact. It does need to be very close though.
The reasons why density, ppt and specific gravity are what they are IS very exact in every respect ......... but for my tanks - getting it real close is fine for me.
If you made it this far reading - congratulations - you must be interested.
If you have anything to add to this thread - please do so.
We're always interested in trying to figure all this stuff out - and any other views would be appreciated ;)"

Hi,
I'm looking for some info on the Blue-striped/Blue faced hermit crab (Pagurus liochele).
So far, I know of one from P.E. area from 39m, one from False Bay (20m) and one from inbetween (intertidally).
If you have seen or collected some of these, please let me know - I will understand if you don't want to disclose your favourite collecting spot - I'm more interested in the depth found as well as the substrate collected from.

Our aquariums incorporate the latest technology in marine systems. This ensures a natural environment for the mimicking of sea conditions.
We at Euro-Spirit also import all our own livestock, which come from Sri Lanka, Singapore, United States and Indonesia. Also having our own holding facility whereby all livestock is quarantined for a minimum of 10 days before it is put into the client's tanks or sold. This is done to minimise the chance of disease being introduced into the tanks.
Euro-Spirit firmly believes that both marine fish and invertebrates should be given the best possible living conditions, not only for their continued well being, but also for the clients' pleasure of seeing a thriving aquarium.

Hey all,
I'm getting married in August this year and my fiancee and I were seriously considering getting about 4 - 5 Clownfish per table as a centrepiece instead of the traditional flower arrangement.
It's going to be a relatively small wedding - 65 ppl odd so that would make around 32 clowns in total (8 people to a table with 8 tables with 4 clowns per table). We were thinking it might be even better if we had different types of clowns per table.
Now, we want to start collecting clowns now to make sure we can hand pick every single one so that we aren't forced to take any shoddy looking ones with a big batch all at once.
I have a 5foot tank that I'm busy putting together but I'm also looking at eventually getting a QT as well... should I section the 5foot into say 4 or 5 sections for the different types of clowns and bare not having a main tank for the next 8 months or should I get that QT now and section that off? What size would be appropriate for holding 32 clowns?
As for keeping them... I'm thinking of the tank as the same type of tanks that the LFS keeps - no LR with loads of skimming, heaters, powerheads and water changes.. this should be ok? When we've had the wedding we'll probably either trade them back to the LFS for peanuts or even consider giving the fish to them... either way, we can't keep 32 clowns.
As for the day of the wedding we're going to have tall, wide vases in the centre of the table with a single battery-powered airpump covered by stones to make it look cool. Lighting I was thinking about either a single 3W led or a couple, whichever looks better, on top of the vase shining down lighting the fish up. Our reception is going to be an air conditioned room so I don't think heaters will be needed. We'll have the fish caught afterwards and taken back to our QT which is only about a 20 min drive.
I know reading this was long but can anybody think of anything else that I might be missing? I think it'll be fun and I know some people will probably think of getting their own so getting more people into the hobby is always a bonus.
And lastly, is it crazy because I'm thinking our close friends and family are going to think we're a couple fries short of a happy meal (if you know what I mean)?

got my hammer coral about a 3 weeks ago, had a bit of damage from shipping. a few days later it started getting brown jelly on skeleton, so i fragged the bad part off, as well as some good part. hammer was going strong for about 2 weeks, growing and extending nicely. now when i look this morning, looks like the hammer is retracting a bit, and looks like brown jelly again. what to do? params are all in check.

So i have been wondering about my water temps since one of the 300W Jager's stopped working.
I have a Marina thermometer which is reading 24C at the moment in the water. I also have a Buyo suction one that reads 29C. Then I have a cheapie bought on Ebay which reads 28C.
The heaters are set at 27C.
What the heck must i trust? Would getting one of those floating mercury types ones give me a more correct reading?

Ok, I saw some little metalic looking round bubble algae on the back of a small mushroom rock. I pulled it out and went to try to scrape off the bubble algae and rinse the rock with tank water. One of them broke and squirted in my eyes! I had safety glasses with side shields on, but it still got me. (Guess I should have had diving goggles on.) Am going to have problems from getting that stuff in my eyes?

hi guys, my yellow clown goby was eating when i got him, he was eating fine fattened up and grew in length for the last 2 weeks. in the last couple days he has started looking really bad and acting strange, breathing heavily, is barely eating now whereas he was a pig a couple days ago. he is staying away from the liverock, he is sitting on the return pump outlet nozzle at the top of the tank, and is deathly afraid of the everything moving in the tank, where he was brave and keen to investigate everything that was happening outside and inside the tank.
he looks like he has little yellow bumps all over him, he is still bright yellow.
I feed him twice a day, with tmc nano marine cuisine which contains: brineshrimp with garlic, mysis, rotifers, copepods, chopped mussel, chopped squid, chopped spinach. during the day he used to munch on the pods that cover the glass, the glass is still covered with them.
I have noticed that the pom pom crab is interested in him, and is quite aggressive towards him, it looks like she tries to sting the goby with the pom poms, every time he is near her.
Water parameters:
25 degrees celsius
pH 8.2
ammonia 0 ppm
nitrite 0 ppm
nitrate 5ppm
salt is 1.024
everything else in the tank is looking good.
Any ideas or advice i can do to get my goby back to a pristine condition?
(mods if this is in the wrong thread please move it into the correct one)
Thank you.

Some 35yrs ago i remember my dad keeping a fish tank with 1 Anemone and what i since learn't was a maroon clown fish (i think). Sadly i also remember a mercury thermo being broke by a mantis shrimp and killing everything. I've had fresh water and tropical fish tanks with great success and recently sold off my tropical fish and dumped a load of sea salt into the tank! there its done! ahah not exactly like that but you get the story.. :)
Now all the research, you tube, google, yahoo, forums and shop sites there is a hell of a lot of conflicting information. strange. anyway i have a few questions for you bofs :P
Temperature?
What is the ideal temperature of a marine tank? Through my research on youtube and other sites i gathered it was between 72F and 76F however i've recently discovered this page from a shop near me suggesting the temperature should be 25C-29C which converted is 77F to 84F
My tank is constant at 25C (77F)
So what is the ideal temperature, and should i raise mine?
Salinity
Again conflicting information allover. Most say 1.021 yet ive seen on this forum 1.024 - 1.026
My tank is at 1.023
Thanks for any info :)

Hi Guys .
Firstly I hope that i have posted this thread in the right place . I'm still pretty new to this form and still busy setting up my first marine tank.
I was in the LFS the today and noticed some fan / tube worms ( think thats what they are called) .
I took a liking to them and asked one of they guys working there about them and it did not seem that he had much of an idea of what he was talking about and thought I'll better ask you guys first .
I was wondering if you guys could give me some info about them and how to care for them . Also how dependant they are on lighting and how reef safe they are .
I want to set up a reef tank with fish and invertabrates that would give me the least amount of worry about weather or not they gonna give me any problems .
Thanks for the help ,

Hey guys
I have gone the np pellet route and bid farewell to my dsb. Recently I had a lack of alkalinity as there was no evaporation and thus no kalkwasser being dosed. This was met with a shocking discovery - my phospates went from 0 to 2.5. This is obviously from the precipitated phosphates leaching back into my system!!! I also could not understand until now why my np pellets weren't working. This was due to have np pellets work the bacteria need a bit of p04 to aspirate for the nitrate consumption to work!!! Will be monitoring things in the week to come!!!!
Your take on this?

Hey guys I just realized my skimmer is not doing its job, it stops working within a month. So i spoke to my LFS owner and he says I should get a TS skimmer. My tank is 300L with 100L sump so he said TS2 will do the job. Does anyone know of someone or is anyone planning on selling a ReefTek TS2 skimmer that can still do the job. Mabye someone professional can give me advice on another skimmer but does the same job, it's just I'm not ready to pay R2000, it's over my budget:(
Thanx in advance:)

Hey all long time no see...
Work has been keeping me busy so havnt had much or any time to chat online.
My tank has jsut been fishless for some time now.
I have an issue about a week ago i started noticing some holes out my Big pin & Kenya & pink tree.. they are large and today one of them have completely been torn part from the base. on close inspection , i see Co-pods goind mental and all over the place.
Are co-pods or whateva they are called eating my soft corals?
They are millions in my tank as there is nothing to eat them, all over my glass ..
Maybe they aint co-pods and somthing else. can some please post an image of one so i know i havnt got somthing else breeding like mad in my tank

Can someone please identify this on my mushrooms. It is spreading to all my mushrooms now. It is brown in colour and if I view it through my macro lens it appears to have a white "mouth" in the middle. It does not have a hard shell.
What is this and what should I do?

Hi Guys
I have today had the shock of my life !!
I did an alkalinity test and I was sitting at 5.7dkh!!!! (Where normally I am at 9.9dkh I do have my calcium and Mg balanced to run this)
It seems because of the highly saturated humidity down here in durbs, I get very little if any evaporation! So I get No Kalkwasser being dosed (so no Calcium and alkalinty being added) No my question I have a dose pump system and I want to toss the Kalkstirrer and go with something more reliable. I have all the stuff needed to do the change to dosing but what do I do for auto topup in respect to PH of the RO before topping it up into my tank ?
Any advice will be appreciated !!!! :1:

I just thought I'd post this reminder, more for the new guys really, as I don't think that I've ever seen it mentioned before.
The gunk that collects agaist the sides of your skimmer neck must be cleaned as soon as it starts to become visible. If not, ammonification will begin there and ammonia will return into the water column with water running down the inside of the skimmer neck. This obviously applies to the gunk on the lid as well.
This ammonia will not be skimmed out later as it does not adhere to air bubbles. Here's an explanation why:

I was laying in bed this morning thinking about doing a waterchange and thought about it and said to myself "the tank still looks fine". then I thoufht about it. our tanks should never look like it needs a waterchange because whatever is making it look bad is already there. seeping into rocks and affecting livestock. the motivation to do a waterchange (note to self) is to KEEP it looking and being good. so yes my weekly waterchange is now calling me so I will get up in five or so minutes and go prep my water for Todays waterchange.

howsit guys and gals. was very lucky today. got given i nice size tank with pumps etc ( was used as fw) was built into the wall. originally was supposed to be for marine, over flows are all there etc. but the guy decided malawi tank instead. tank is 1.2 l by 720 w by 500 h. will be a new project for me for the next year or so.

Hi rowaphos and NP pellet users. Need to set up my new sump and this is one of the things I am doing, using 2 Two Little Fishies phosban reactors to run rowaphos and NP pellets .
Please advise, wanting to plumb 2 TLF reactors into one siccie 2700lt per hour pump (using a t piece and not daisy chain). The TLF 550 will run NP pellets and the TLF 150 will run rowaphos. Will there be sufficient flow for both reactors from this pump.
My tank is about 550lts. How much rowaphos do I run in a TLF 150 reactor. How much NP pellets in the TLF 550 reactor.
I do have a siccie 1200lt per hour pump if there is insufficient flow through the reactor used to run rowaphos.
Thanks

Hi all MASA members
I'm Ryan (the newbie) from Midrand; Decided to take the plunge and give mini-reef aquariums a bash.
Why: Because I love everything marine! (da sea, da feeeshies & da coral)
Having said that, I love all animals & those Rhino poaches are not making me happy right now! :nono:
Anyway...I've bought my mini-reef aquarium books and am plugging away nicely with some research.
I'm keen to read some threads and learn from all you Feeeeshy peeps!
Have a great wknd!

Notes: Hi Guys
really bums me out to do this but I have to.
My beautiful regal tang has picked up a habit of eating my zoas over the last couple of weeks. Can destroy a colony in a day or two:(
Is a very special fish to me so would rather give her away and have a choice in which home she goes to, if that makes sense.
So if you keen on her and dont have any zoa colonies;), let me know on the thread or pm- Ill check out your systems thread and make a decision.
Hope thats alright, mods?
Can honestly say she is one of the healthiest n best looking regals ive seen!

Hi. Noticed something weird in my tank 2 days ago. While cleaning the glass I noticed some slug like thing sticking its head out from one of the live rocks. At the same time this thing was "blowing smoke rings out" at every two to three seconds. Not to sure if this would be toxic for the fish, I grabbed the rock out of the water and tried pinching it out. But it just went deeper in. Still determined, I managed to get the head out, which had a hard shell like covering and subsequently the body, which basically felt and looked like a pickled gerkin!! It may have been about 4 to 5 cm long and about as thick as an average pinkie. Sorry was not able to photograph. Any ideas? Should I be concerned that there are more of them?

Hi there guys.
Building a new custom tank for myself and I have had enough of the off the shelf chinese built tank I currently have.
New tank will be built by Idol Marine out of 15mm Starphire glass on 3 side with a skinny overflow and built in compartments to house my 4 MP40 Vortech pumps.
Tank size will be 1200mm X 1000mm x 700mm with the water line at 650mm.
Doing a Eurobrace style tank, so should be good.
Tank stand will be built out of 50mm square tubing and should be getting that back today from a friends day who was kind enough to weld the steel (for a small fee).
Busy with loads of electronics and DIY LEDs for the main lights as well as moon lights.
Will post pictures as I go along.

So Ive had the issue myself along with a few other people. When you mix salt for a waterchange there may be left over residue in the container or on the heater or pump in the mixing container. Found this over on RC. The post was from a Red Sea representative.
Coral-Pro salt has elevated levels of Foundation Elements in order to allow accelerated growth in corals.
Therefore when it is not properly mixed it might cause precipitation.
There are a few reasons I can think of that might cause that phenomenon:
- Stratification of the salt- sometimes when a bucket of salt travels a lot, the shaking and vibrating causes the mix to separate according to grain size.
Dry mixing the salt, by rolling the bucket on the floor for a few minutes, or pouring the dry salt from one bucket to another a few times, will solve this issue.
- Mixing the salt with pre warmed water.
I recommend mixing at ambient temperature, and then bring the temp. up.
- The pump you are using might not be strong enough, because of the elevated levels of elements in the salt, it requires a vigorous mixing.
- Adding water to salt and not salt to water- always add the salt slowly to the water.(I think that’s what you are already doing, but just in case)

This is great! We have the Vertex Vectra ready to go and the price is totally cool! About half of the competitors. I guess it was worth the wait.
The product consists of an motor, the Vectra Engine, plus a sold seperately cover, available in various millimeter diameters for most standard neck sizes. We offer 150, 160, 180, 200, 250, 300mm diameters. These last 4 correspond directly to the Vertex Alpha Skimmer series, the 170, 200, 250, 300. It will fit the Royal Exclusiv skimmers, as well as most other brands. Just measure the diameter of your skimmer neck and Bob's your uncle...... or somtin' like that.
Here is a link where you can get a good look at it!

OK, go run to your nearest Vertex dealer and demand your cleaning team!

I recently lost 3 fish after a routine 25% water change. When I tested my water immediately, my alkalinity had dropped in half (from what it had been right before the water change). Calcium was literally off the charts (higher than what my test kit could measure). There was nothing else note worthy about my water parameters. No nitrites or nitrates. No ammonia. Normal pH, salinity, etc.
I recently did a Google search and talked to some friends and apparently, this isn't all that uncommon for Reef Crystals. Sometimes it's the other way around (with the alkalinity going through the roof).
My buddy at the LFS said that sometimes the different components of the salt mix "settles out" in the bucket if the bucket has been sitting in one place for too long. I don't know if I believe that or not, but either way, if you use Reef Crystals, be sure to test it in a small batch of newly mixed water.
Cheers

So i often visit garf.org and on their frontpage they have a write up on them using mollies to control algae etc in their tanks, now GARF i assume is quite reputable in the marine trade, they even selling them.
Are certain molly species found in SW as apposed to brackish water?
If this was anyway cruel or frowned upon wouldnt there be an up-roar somewhere on the web?

Hi
Got home last night b4 heading to aries and when i looked in my tank there were pieces of my fire shrimp all over the place  seemd he had died, the best looking and most expensive of my shrimps...
With the crapy feeling of my loss i went off to my bud. As we talked and he enlightened me a bit about corals and so on i mentioned my shrimp which had died.
He sad that the shrimp do loose their skin from time to time and that it almost looks like your shrimp had died and been torn to pieces.
After i went home i hoped it had been him only loosing his skin but couldnt find him anywhere, so again i felt like popo thinking again i lost him all over again lol.
Placing my new frags( Armand gave me wohoo!) in my tank felt something scraching my finger... Could you believe it, it was my shimp(Normin):yeahdude:.
Felt so relieved, dono if he tried eating my finger or just came to say awe or what, but glad hes alive!
Tank is starting to look better now, will post pics in bout a month to show what i got as their very small atm and dont look like much YET.
Tnx for the advice m8.
ps. why do the shrimp come to my hand? and if its coz he wants to eat me, does it bite hard?:whistling:

Hi all,
I bought some latex gloves to use in the tank, I noticed when I got home they have powder on them. Can I rinse them in RO and use them in the tank?

Over the last month or so I lost 3 cleaner shrimps for no apparent reason. As I couldn't find any bodies I was considering alien abduction until last night !
Doing the usual "before lights out" inspection , I noticed the mini carpet nennie's mouth had a odd coloration.....guess what there was a cleaner shrimp becoming supper
I tried to take a pic as proof but the nennie sits at an impossible angle

Hi,
I have a Marine Tank 2.1m x 600 with some corals and various fish.
We bought the Tank 5 years ago from a company called Fish Focus based in JHB and a guy called Rob (Owner Of Fish Focus) after seeing a Marine Tank that he was showing at a House & Home show at the Dome North Gate JHB. I made the investment at that stage of approximately R 60,000.00.
Rob has never been able to get my Tank even after five years to the condition of the Tank I saw at the show despite years of reassurances and excuses that one day it will Mature and all will come rite.
For five years and thousands of rands paid to Fish Focus we have never been able to get remotely near the result that I was sold and have seen on other Tanks around the country in my travels. We have had Fish Focus servicing the Tank monthly from the day of installation at a cost of R1600.00 P/m and lots of other side costs also incurred such as lights, pumps, heaters etc.
Regrettably I am now thinking of getting rid of my Tank as no value in visual experience is being achieved despite enormous costs. I have no problem paying money as I love Marine Tanks but need a return on investment which Rob has not delivered.
However I thought this morning that I should make one last cry for help and picked this forum as my platform.
Fish Focus have failed me and for five years took my money and delivered no value.
Can some one recommend anybody in the JHB Roodepoort area who can visit my Tank and advise and possibly turn the situation around and save my Tank.
Please Please!!
Thank You

Hi All
over the holidays , i had setup my tank to cycle for a long period and now and a little stuck .
i have managed to find another tank , which is bigger , and therefore need more of everything.
i wanted to know if there is a big difference between live rock , and base rock (as some call it )
i prefer the base rock look , and wanted to use this rather than the LFS Live rock ( that is a rip off in price)
also can anyone direct me to a place to find large pieces of "base" rock in cape town , or surrounding areas,at decent prices.
i am not prepared to pay a LFS for taking the rocks off the beach , and charging for it.
the tank is going to be 2.5m x 90 x 90 , so the bigger the pieces , obviously the better
thanks

I Know we know this already.. But more

Paris - The ocean's deepest volcanic vents, kilometres below the surface, are teeming with life forms never before seen that thrive near super-hot underwater geysers, according to a new study.
Eyeless shrimps and white-tentacled anemones were photographed bunched around cracks in the ocean floor spewing mineral-rich water that may top 450°C, researchers reported on Tuesday.
The vents - baptised the Beebe Vent Field in honour of the first scientist to venture into the deep ocean - were discovered on the Caribbean seafloor in the Cayman Trough, south of the Cayman Islands.
Some 5km below the surface, the trench is home to the world's deepest known "black smoker" vents, so-called for the cloudy fluid that gushes from them.
During an expedition in 2010, a team lead by marine geochemist Doug Connelly of Britain's National Oceanography Centre and University of Southampton biologist Jon Copley used a deep-diving robot submarine to explore the trough.
Eyes
The researchers also found previously unknown vents on the upper slopes of nearby Mount Dent, which rises some 3km from the sea floor. It's peak remains the same distance beneath the surface waves.
"Finding black smoker vents on Mount Dent was a complete surprise," Connelly said in a statement. "Hot and acidic vents have never been seen in an area like this before."
The discoveries suggest that active deep-sea volcanic vents are more widespread around the globe than previously thought, he added.
Cameras on the submarine captured startling images of a new species of ghostly-pale shrimp - dubbed Rimicaris hybisae - that had gathered in clusters of up to 2 000 specimens per square metre.
Lacking normal eyes, the shrimp have a light-sensing organ on their backs, presumably to help them navigate in the faint glow of the deep-sea vents, said the study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Communication.
A related species, Rimicaris exoculata, has been found living at the edge of another deep-sea vent 4 000km away on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
"Studying creatures at these vents, and comparing them with species at other vents around the world, will help us to understand how animals disperse and evolve in the deep ocean," Copley said.
"One of the big mysteries of deep-sea vents is how animals are able to disperse from vent field to vent field, crossing apparently large distances."
Elsewhere at the Beebe Vent Field, the scientists saw hundreds of white anemones lining the cracks where warm, copper-rich water seeps from the seabed.
The vents on Mount Dent also thronged with the new shrimp, along with a snake-like fish, an unknown species of snail and a flea-like crustacean called an amphipod.

Guys this is a difficult topic as we are all well intentioned individuals and want the best for our fellow reefers starting out
BUT
i cannot see the sence in trying to advise a student for EG to purchase a expensive piece of equipment when they cannot comprehend its importance and they will certainly not understand why they are able to get a simular product "cheaper" (jebo, boyu you get) my drift.
maybe the question was asked in the wrong manner but we need to assess the situation and go with what is needed as a minimum and then build on it from there..
i am the first person to promote the use of an oversized skimmer for eg on the smallest of tanks, its my belief that it is extreemly important to have one rated at least double the total system capacity.. but if i cant afford a top end skimmer i will be looking at something in my price range that claims to do a simular capacity
now
is there not a way we can get these ridiculous skimmers off the market?
i still see people being conned into buying jebo's and it will continue to happen untill somebody puts a regulation in place..
i dont want to make the hobby unaffordable but i would like to see the right product correctly specified for the correct volume and intended purpose..
there must be something we can do
thoughs comments welcome...

Happy New Year everyone!!!
Thought we could start the year off with a proper Social event.
All the up-country holiday makers should be heading home, the weather is perfect, so why not have a family outing to Hermanus? The shark research facility (the little one in the old harbour) has indicated that they would open specially for MASA. I think i may know of a good place for us to have lunch as well.
Any thoughts?

Hi all
After a long holiday, yesterday i noticed that all my frog spawns have a brown like jelly that is around the heads and stems. I have tried to syphon it out but cant cos they are moving around. Can someone please advise me on what i can do. Im really worried that it is spreading and will start causing tissue damages to all the corals.
All advise and comments are most welcome.
THanks ppl :(

Hi
I discovered nudis on my Daisy Polyps and Im not sure whether to bother removing them or not, or even dip it in Coral RX. They are the same colour as the polyps, and the polyps does not seem to mind much, since they remain open even though the nudis crawl up them. My problem is whether or not the nudis will spread to other corals ( I have various zoas, button polyps, palys etc. in my tank) and harm them. Could this nudis only be limited to the Daisies? I discovered quite a few.
See picture below.
Thanks

Good day all
I currently have a 2 ft sump split into 4 compartments, water enters gets skimmed passes over and through a 5cm layer of sand (wanted this as a dsb- i now know that it must not be oxygen rich) then flows under and rises through Bio pellets, purigen, chemipure and then flows over into ceramic rings..
Im thinking of taking out the middle plane of glass and making a proper DSB with sand collected deep in the sea, then using that last compartment for purigen chemipure etc..
My tank is 11days old now so rather get it right 1st time.. Another thing will i be able to cardon dose(vodka) if i have a DSB?

for no real reason call it a hunch or feeling I suspect there is a crab in my tank. So tonight some yummy lance fish tied to a little rock at the bottom of a glass, is sitting snug and slightly angled.
For good measure I put the same in my new tank that has been cycling with some LR.

Hi guys,
Does anyone out there have a good protein skimmer (internal) which will run a 750 ltr system (moderatly stocked), but the problem is that it needs to be no more than 50 cm tall, and have a foot print of no more than 24 X 50 cm. this will be in-sump, the water level in the skimmer compartment will be 25cm deep.
The relatively restricted height of my sump cabinet is a major issue for me, and I have no space to put an external skimmer. If it helps, I'll post a thread to show the tank design etc.
I've seen some Skimz, Tunze and Reef Octopus skimmers which look 'short' enough to fit, so if anyone has a suitable one to sell, please let me know. Otherwise, I'm going to attempt a DIY skimmer, but I don't feel like endless hours of tinkering and fiddling only to eventually give up and buy one anyway:lol:.
Thanks ;)

I am considering to move from dsb to np pellets, can somebody with experience please assist to what monthly cost would approximately be? My DT is 290l and sump is about 65l, my system is medium stocked with fish and i have some softies and lps. At the moment my filtration is reef octopus xp1000 cone skimmer, dsb is 470mm by 310mm and 110mm deep and caulerpa on dsb.

I picked up a bottle of Brightwell's Microbacter7 and just need to get some input as to how I go about dosing this stuff. My PO4 etc is all sat on 0 so as far as I know it should be fine to start the dosing.
My tank is 160l & my plan is to dose 6ml per day for 2 weeks followed by 1 drop per day after that. I am going to dose Aquav Fuel for carbon so long, how often/much should I dose and should I not dose the Fuel until after the first 2 weeks or what?
Thanks

Well after 8 yrs of running my DSB it was starting to get very tired, my NO3 levels started to slowly creep up. I was now faced with a decesion weather to go with a new DSB or move on and keep up with changes in the hobby, eventually decided on the latter. I have removed the DSB and decided to go with the Berlin method of live rock and strong skimming. I have also added 1L of Bio pellets into 2 reactors to aid the control of nitrates and phosphates. In my calculation i will eventually need around 2 - 3L of pellets but i have started with half the amount, hoping to avoid the pending bacterial bloom as the NO3 levels have crept up to about the 30 mark. I do not wish to run a ULNS so will be adding pellets slowly until i get the NO3 level to about 5. Any advice on the use of the pellets would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys.
I need some help on my Brain Coral. I bought a brain coral on Sunday, since then it didn't inflate. It looks like it's mouths are constantly open, and this morning I saw patches of tissue comming off it? What must I do, can I save it?
-
Where to start, about 3 months ago i mentioned to a friend i wanted a fish tank and he jumped up :yeahdude: and said he has a friend who is a Fish Whisperer and knows all about it, and went on to describe his various tanks, so i took his number and gave him a call.
He referred me to wild on pets where they had complete tank setups, i set off on my journey the same day to see what i was getting into. I landed up getting a Nano Cube 28g with sugar fine crushed coral, a couple of Kg's live rock, salt water and headed home.
i put it all together and waited for Dallas to arrive...
WOW, this dude knows his stuff! He arrived with some bacteria and a whole lot of advice and lessons. He explained what goes on under the hood from the nitrogen cycle to why we do what we do, what each component does and how to go forward.
Amazed at his knowledge i knew this was going to be a great adventure! and have much success with my tank.
Now we seeded the system and let it run for a week with just cured live rock and a wonderful smelling bacteria additive, Special Blend, which i still use today. All params in check i decided to add my first bit of life.
Next there was tragedy, another friend who had kept marines for years came past while i was doing a water change, not something most would believe Dallas to recommend, and suggested i mix my salt in my tank with my newly added livestock... bad idea!
so in the chaos i called Dallas and he arrived to assess the damage. Salinity at 1,038! my fish were dying, my zoas were shriveled and the fatalities started. With patience and stability we started dripping RO over the next few days to get the salt back to 1,024, 7 hectic days passed and we were there! Thanks again Dallas!
Now full steam ahead, all was going well then i got a call from my wife saying our daughter had fed the fish all the food, panic stations!
But now i had learned that there was only one place to go, thing to do, CALL DALLAS! got him on the line, told the story, and wham he was there same day. We did water changes, added bacteria, added some magic additives and all was good in the land of the reef.
Once everything had settled down we started adding more, donÂ’t we all??
I got a few corals from Dallas to add to my system, got a few from Wild on Pets and bam! my tank was looking awesome!
Next I researched lighting and came across TSR from his recommendation, where I got some great Vertex Illumina LED units, now i sit back and enjoy.
While I have had my ups and downs with this reef adventure I can only say that without Dallas' expertise, knowledge and selfless giving of support and advice I would never have achieved what you will see in the following pictures.
To show my appreciation I have named my thread An Ode to Dallas, one of the best resources we have in marines!!
Dallas a guy who gives everything freely, there are no strings, hidden agenda's etc. just plain straight forward advice to get the most out of the hobby for you! Somewhat difficult to get hold of at times, but when you do, be prepared to learn and get sage-like advice. The one thing I noticed is the straight to the point advice, each bit is given and explained why, how we do it, the pros and cons, what others suggest and always practiced in his systems. To keep it simple, you want a good looking reef, get hold of him!
Now on to the good stuff, here are the pics! :1:

I am looking for a Moorish Idol. I had one about 2years back, before i had a auto top up,and wavemakers. Mine got sucked into a pump because my fish got startled when the return chamber got empty, and the resulting bubbles got into the dt. I would prefer one that is eating,or a local one. The tankmates are non-aggressive tangs, and the tank is relative ok,1800x600x600,i have some sponges as well.

Hi guys,
I've just started a fairly large DSB (roughly 150cm X 50cm) and would love to get some mature sand from an established DSB to get it going...
Is anyone out there able to kindly donate? I'll exchange it with fresh sand;)!
If the same person has a few pieces of LR they wanna sell, I'll grab that too, also in exchange for fresh sand:razz:, or cash!
Thanks:thumbup:

I'm dying to start a marine tank (if my mom has her way I will only start when I'm finished matric- aka in 2 years) but unfortunately I'm stubborn, and I'm gonna get all my plans in order anyway.
I've got a nano (or is it pico?) Jebo tank, about 18liters, with the filter in the lid. It's small yea, but I can't afford bigger stuff. I don't necessarily have to keep fish.
Big thanks and rep to @
dallasg who gave it to me- one of the nicest things anybody ever done for me  he also gave me a blue light, 4 filter pads for nitrite, ammonia, carbon and phosphate and some substrate.
I have a bunch of q's.. Do I need a sump? I have a little 15l 1ft tank that I could use like this guy did,
My 30L Nano - Marine Aquariums of South Africa, or something similar. It's the only tank I got that's not 2nd hand and cracked. What about the layout for making this a sump??
Skimmer? If there no sump, there no were to put one.. If this tank stops us from going on holiday, I'm gonna be in the sh1t, so I want to keep this as simple, cheap and low maintenance as possible..
Advice advice advice please!! Will add more q's as I think em up :P

hey all ive been inspired by some of the shallow tanks on our forum and others...ive been hooked.
so this is the start of my shallow existence.
DT-150x40x70
sump(for now)-40l i think
total volume +-440
lighting will be 6xt5 54w
return pump- hailea 2800lph
skimmer-AM 500 blue turboflotor (would like something bigger but all i have for now)
i want this system to be very clean so sump area is gonna be spotless and i want zero detritus in my DT...gonna have decent flow to stop stuff from settling.
i want to achieve something similar to tritonian's system...not an easy task but ill give it a bash
heres 2 picks for now let me know what u think

hi again!! just want to share my opinion on the new range of red sea supplements. im thrilled!! been doing alot of experimenting in the shop on our various display tanks and tried the coral growth program, and the coral color program. the results are unreal! ive been testing daily and dosing accordingly, and have not seen such stunning colors in a sysrem before. the no3 po4- has worked brilliantly, dropped the phosphates and nitrates so low can hardly get a reading when i test, so feeding my scaled friends extra now they love me more lol. value for money, and ease of use the new range i think is one of the best you can get. worth trying, come in and see our red sea max displays, and the growth of the corals in the main show tank.

Lately I have read a lot of threads on SA forums, heard a lot of discussions in LFS and been involved in a lot of discussions with fellow reefers about Phosphates. There seems to be a lot of people thinking that getting ideal phosphate readings is going to cure all the problems with your tank. Below are just my feelings on the subject.
I am not a big one for taking readings of nitrates and phosphates as I feel I know my tank well enough to be able to see if there is a problem serious enough in those areas that I need to look into it, however with all the talk of late I decided to get my PO4 tested. The reading on the Hana Meter came back as 0.35ppm. On telling some fellow reefers this, the response was "Thats VERY high" "you should be concerned" "your corals are going to die" etc...
Yes I will be the first to admit that it is generally not an ideal reading, but here is why I think that those kind of comments are a load of rubbish...if we go according to what we read on phosphates corals growth should be stunted, lack of colour should be occuring and corals in general should be pretty unhappy but looking at my tank I would say there is nothing to worry about...SPS are growing at a decent rate, they are colouring up a lot since I got them a month or so back and there is good polyp extention. LPS are growing and looking good as well and there is no nuisance algae to speak of.
What I am trying to get at is, phosphates are not the only thing that is going to effect you corals in specifically your sps in terms of them doing well. Too much emphasis has been put on this Golden phosphate number of 0.03ppm and if your phosphates are not at this then you wont succeed at sps and I think a lot of people are beginning to think that if they can achieve this reading then all their problems are going to go away.
Phosphates are only one part of the puzzle, I feel that if you have ideal lighting, ideal flow, are keeping all your other parameters at the correct levels and corals are getting the suppliments that they are needing such as amino acids and vitimins your corals are still going to do well...granted if you do get your phosphates down to that almost undetectible level you will obviously get better colouring.
Another idea I have is that Corals will adapt to their environment and if po4 is constantly higher than ideally it should be I would think they will eventually adapt to this...just my thoughts on that anyway.
Anyone else got any thoughts on the subject?

hi all! we are now proud stockists of the complete deltec and d&d product range! reef paste is now in stock, fantastic for feeding corals, anemonies and can even be crumbled and fed to fish. its a krill based formula enriched with additional vitamins and supplements. we have been using it extensively in the shop and having fantastic results on coral growth. something worth trying ;)

Hi all
Im looking to find a place where i can buy the black plastic that is used to cover the bio balls and overflow in the tank?
Where will i be able to find that in Cape Town?

Hey guys:) I'm sure you guys are tired of this topic but Im fed up cause i dont know what to do anymore. Ive got a 300L tank with lots of LR and a sump with DSB. A protein skimmer Dymax (rated 700L). When i came back from holiday (after a month) my sand and rocks were covered with red slime algae.I have removed most of it from the sand but the rocks are difficult cause it starts drifting everywhere. Im starting with water changes like always but will weekly water changes really help? Im planning on doing a 60L change. Last year all my corals just started dissappearing and i just want to get my reef up and going again. Please any suggestions :)

hi Guys,
as the header reads.. i was working in the garden in Saturday and put a screwdriver into my hand, not deep only around 1mm, but a fairly good puncture.
on sunday my entire setup was purchased and moved out.
due to this my hands were in the tank lots collcting rock etc. so i think the puncture wound softened and the scab fell off.
i picked up a hammer coral and it swivelled and touched the small puncture wound.
i immediately dropped the hammer as it felt exactly like a bee sting.
i rinsed my hand in fresh water and then put vinegar over it to "clean it"
over the period of the night the area has swollen lightly, is a bit red, and warm to the touch.
so my guess is its infected.
i've been advised to go see the doc and get an antibiotic.
anyone else had a similiar experience?
and is a visit really warranted?
Thanks for the help!

Now you guys have me worried. I have a refugium with a DSB and an abundance of mainly Caulerpa and also a healthy ball of Chaeto growing in it that is attached to my DT. I started this refugium 15 months ago when I had a 300liter tank mainly because I battled high phosphates in the tank and also as a display tank with maybe one day seahorses. That was the plan!.
Have now upgraded to a bigger tank. Had the refugium linked to the new tank as well. It really works perfectly, feeding my DT with lots of little critters. The caulerpa is growing at a phenominal rate so I prune it back vigorously every week. I dont want the refugium to become to overgrown and scraggly looking as it doubles as a nursery for any small or new fish that needs more attention. (still dont have the seahorses, and dont think I'm going that way.... theyre just to fragile). The refugium is teeming with small copepods and other little critters.
What worries me now is this "going sexual thing" of Caulerpa! Any telltale signs that I can watch out for before this happens. I found the caulerpa growing at such a pace in comparison to the chaeto. Will cut them back even more to give the chaeto a better chance. And then for peace of mind go over to only chaeto.

Good Day All,
After my tank have been running now for almost 3 months, I detected a minor leak of about 3mm a day, very small...:( Lucky I took Tobes advice to stock up very slow...
The Plan: To start up my Nano cube (Frag Tank) 500 x 500 x 350. To move my sailfin tang and clean up cube with my 3 corals...
Then start building a new tank:) (10mm glass)
Current tank: 1200 x 600 x 600 water level @ 580 with a coast to coast overflow...
Want to build a tank 1200 x 600 x 600 again but lower water level... with a coast to coast overflow...
Need advice, what is the best way to silicone a tank? was thinking to cut the glass 2mm shorter and space it so that the glass dont touch with a 2mm silicone seam... ? and make use of polished glass edges?
Can anyone of the tank builders give some advice?

I was looking for my mandrin as I had not seen it for a day or two. My pod population is still overgrown and he was a fatty. Today I was doing a 80% water change and noticed him at the back of the tank on the floor, looking rather like biltong.....
I would not have expected a Mandrin to be a jumper???

Anybody else tried that? Lemon juice being a low PH being used, I thought why not, vinegar is even lower and also a natural product. And I tried it.
I also have another colony type of anemone taking over one big rock. Small green type, green centre with pinkish tentacles. Works on them too, like in immediate. Found 3 Mojano's. Well, they are gone.
Inject them with needle, but you must get into the body. They just dissolve and easily comes of the rock, unless they are in a deep crevice. Better and faster than Aiptasia-X. But Aiptasia-X does stun them, stopping them from retracting. Well, I just blow them up from the inside.
But be extremely careful. Vinegar is just another form of carbon dosing. Just like Vodka or sugar. So you cannot go and nuke each and every last Aiptasia in your tank.
Only .1ml per 100L total system volume.

Danie Botha and myself had a absolutely magic day at THE beach in KZN and I'm sure SK had the same experience. Quite a few more species fish was on display and the weather was as good as one can want. I got this one slug like thing that is beautiful to me but I am not sure if it can go into my tank. Please give me your advice, it is hanging around in a pyrex lid and I would like to make the right decision asap.

And this is the slug.

Hi :peroni:--------->:yeahdude:--------->:eek:
I conditioned a sailfin molly to marine. He has been in the tank for 3 months now. Over the past few days his colour has changed from orange to almost lucid. I think i can see some organs lol. Is this natural as mollies mature / go into saltier water. Is he gonna survive or should i condition him back to the freshside?
All advice / experiences welcome

Hi guys,
Anyone have a Odyssea T5 4x 54w light unit for sale?
-
Hi guys,
I have a 700 liter tank running for about one and a quarter years now. I relocated about 3 months ago, but ever since I struggled to keep algae blooms under control.
I've tried the usual advice; minimal light time, reduced feeding intervals and quantity, introduced more clean-up-crew members (snails, hermits, tangs), replaced the T5 tubes, got my water tested at the local pet shop (N's and P's are relative high), alkalinity a little bit low. I've performed a few water changes and tried to clean my rocks and gravel every day for a week, I also build an algae scrubber (had two harvests so far)...I've installed a new return pump which has a 3x higher pumping capacity. I've noted a tiny reduction of algae, but the cyno covered all my gravel. I siphon my gravel with every water change.
I test my water every other day for N's and P's but it remains sort of constantly high.
I'm fed up with the problem. The advice that I got so far is either watered down or very specific to certain aspect of it, or it costed me a lot of money.
So now for more questions:
a) How do I determine whether the flow induced by the power heads in the display tank, is enough?
b) Should I aim the power heads directly at the live rock, or more to the open spaces around it?
c) I've read an article in the "Reef Keeping" magazine; in there the guy say that one should hardly every siphon the gravel. Should I stop?
d) What haven't I considered yet?
I must try to sort this problem out soon, because I can't look at my tank any more and consider stopping it due to the escalating expenses.

Hi There,
I've got a breeding pair of clown fish ,but it seems they don't lay eggs,
I got them around 6month ago from a friend with the tank,
they used to lay eggs regularly when they were with my bud, but now its been 6month and i keep searching whole the tank and don't find anything,
The water parameters are normal expect PH is a bit low, around 7.9
And nitrate is a bit high like 20.0 ml
Do they need special water condition to lay eggs?
Or is it possible they aren't pair anymore for some reason?
Any advice is appreciated.:(

So for many years i have kept marines and read many great books, this book by Martin Moe Jr was rated as one of the best, so i got a copy and so far very good, i will review each chapter as i go along.
But from the first few pages, foreward and introduction , it looks to be very good even using some retro ideas for filtration etc...

Hi
So whe i bought my first piece of LR it came with a hitchhiker nennie, which I named big red. I took down my 1.2m tank about two weeks ago and decided to keep him going in a small daro tank I have. Here are some updated pics. Hes about the size of R5 coin when open
And now amazingly I found another one on the same rock. Still small about the size of 1c coin. Has burgundy centre with a green edge. Due to the size and its in the middle of the tank this is the best photo of him I can get. Any ideas as to what they are?

Hey All
I spoke to Furbs the other day, by the way thanks for the sale and help :-)
I have done some research on the product and want to give it a go, Want to know tho.. Should i start the lighting straight away? I wont stock in a hurry will wait like 2 weeks think thats fine?
Should i run a phosphate reactor to remove my phosphates to avoid unwanted algae (Have readings of 1mg/l), Should i Run the Skimmer? I know they instruct u not to a certain period?
How should i maintain my tank afterwards, just dose every 2 weeks and do water changes and monitor the water paramaters.

Anyone know where I can get some shells for my hermits. Would like to give them an opportunity to grow into some new shells.
-
Hi all,
Firstly before I get asked:
Salinity: 1026 - refractometer
Phos: 0.1 - Hanna checker
Nitrate: 10ppm - Salifit
Nitrite: 0
Ammonia: 0
Alk: 12.2 (been running it high always even when they were happy)
Mag: 1350
Calc: 460'
I run the nitrate a bit higher for the clams - don't have any SPS well have one but its a hitch hiker - encrusting Monti but its brown (yes I know why)
So what is happening:
All my corals are running super healthy, all extended all splitting heads, clams got new extensions on it, big zoas all multiplying like rabbits and pulsating xenia now becoming a pest.
What's the problem, well I have a category for my Zoas big ones and small ones - simple enough. The big ones are the ones 10 cent size and bigger the small ones either a match head or up to 10c ***NOTE: they stay this size***
What I have notice is all the big Zoas =<10c are growing like hell but I can't seem to keep the smaller Zoas 10c<.
Good examples:
1. I had what they call hand picked serbert zoas loads of tiny (only a single match head size) dark orange Zoas - they lasted a month.
2. The pictures you see below is my fav Zoas. When I got them they were the only ones on the rock with one or two of the others (circled in blue). As you can see over the space of three months the big Zoas have grown and the small Zoas have almost completely disappeared :(
What have I checked for:
1. I looked for a month every night at all the hours of the night and the early morning for any nudi's, snails etc - found nothing (only yesterday found a BIGGGG snail see ID forum)
2. Looked for flat worm - nothing
What I have done:
1. Dipped them in:
1.1. Brightwell Coral Dip
1.2 Coral X
1.3 Seachem coral dip
2. Given them a fresh water dip
3. Moved them to all places in the tank from high light little flow, to little light high flow etc
No matter what I can't keep these "small" Zoas alive. Seems like they the same as RIC's they just disappear in my tank...
Anyone know whats going on?
About two months ago (had them for a month or so):
-
Last night I came to get some water in the kitchen passed the lounge and checked on the tank as usual.
I noticed a 2cm wide type of "trail" (Snail trail) in the sand leeding to the back of my tank.
It was a straight line and my turbo's and mexians even though are big have never left that type of trail.
Took the red light and started looking. I found it. when I spotted it, it had a foot of about 1.5cm wide and was abut 4 to 5cm long.
QUICKLY I got the bugger out (I am having some problems with some of my Zoas disappearing). Unfortunately I cut it in half with the grabber. If anyone know what this is I would appreciate the heads up, never seen this type of snail nor the type of shell, was very flat, all I could explain was that it looked like a army burrey *spelling on its head. The pictures are the head and a piece that broke in half.

Hi all,
Setting up my new tank its been running for about 3 weeks now on Zeovit no inhabitants just LR and the Zeovit running. I noticed something interesting today.
I have wooded laminated flooring. When I am on that floor and in the tank I don't feel any "shock" (its more like some weird feeling making one of my finger muscles pull).
HOWEVER the tank is by my patio door, at the bottom of the door there is that metal "railing" he one that seals the door to the ground.
IF I stand on that metal "railing" and put my hand in the tank zap I start to feel that weird muscle pulling - which I think is some sort of shock...
IF I am on the wooden flooring nothing.
What's makes me wonder is in the new tank I opted for the titanium heaters which are designed to trip the electricity if there is any leakage in the water. They don't have a thermostat and run off my profilux.
To date nothing has tripped.
Anyone know what to do what to check or if this is normal?
-
Today has been one of my most challenging marine days. From finding one of my sand sifters with a
broken gill
To my return pump just stopping with out any reason. Once you setup your tank everything is so nice and neat all your wires are cable tied and everything into a DB board. Your pump goes and you don't know if it's electric of if its the pump.
I spent the greater part of today removing the return pump out the sump, removing all the wiring and then took the opportunity to clean out the sump (was full of derby from the LR).
Luckily I have a back up of most of the equipment at hand. Good to report that the new return pump is in and running. It's much quieter too.
I checked the impeller but all is good there must be something electric.

Hi all,
Today woke up made some coffee :) went to my tank to have a look. The lights were off and the fish were out already.
Lights came on and the GF was watching the fish and doing some parameter tests for me when she noticed something on our blue (dotted) cheek sand sifter. At first I thought he might have munched on a bristle worm but at closer inspection I wasn't sure.
Test 1:
Was he still sifting sand - YES a lot of it
Test 2:
Made some food with garlic and vitamins dropped it into the tank, in his usual fashion went for everything and chowed
Test 3:
Put some DD food paste on the window quite high up to see if he had strength to swim. Munched all of it (see pics below)
Then I thought could it be some parasite like a fluke or something?
So the GF and I went about catching him. From having to catch my clown a month ago I knew that you have to use your brains. I blocked their cave (have a pair) and put two nets outside. The bugger still came around the rock and tried to pull the rock (its the nori feeding rock with some rope) away from his hole.
Eventually he swam into the net. I managed to get him out and get a good picture of what it was. It seems one of his gills has BROKEN at the bottom (still attached at the top) and is sticking out of his gill. I had a TINY when I mean TINY I mean SUPER TINY tug on it and it is still fastened at the top.
I notice two things:
1. He has become a bit more agressive than normal (can't blame him being p1ssed off)
2. He is trying to get it out by rubbing it on the sand.
He is still FEEDING and still SAND SIFTING
PICS below.
Questions:
1. What could of caused this?
2. Do I need to put him in the hospital tank?
3. Will he be ok?
-
I have two female ocellaris, which are behaving strange. Both are usually very greedy eaters. That changed and it seemed to be they are kinda blind. Today I made the test and I can catch them without any fast movement with my hand.
I had a similar fish, chromis female, which was trying to eat, but missed the food. The chromis swam into other fish, glass pane, etc. After a while he seemed to have his eye sight back.
Is there anybody who came across something like that?

I put two clowns into my tank on 26 December - 1 died after a week and the other after 10 days - the last one stated swimming like mad in the current in front of the pump - for hours on end. Next morning I found it dead and the cleaner shrimp was feeding on it. Is there something like a too strong current for these fish ? There other fish - Banggai Cardinals , cleaner shrimp urchin and starfish are 100 % ok - water is also fine. At the beginging they two of them stayed in a cave the whole time - also where I found the first one. Second one seemed fine - was feeding up to the end. Any comments ?

Would love to have the importers of Coral to read this please. Very interesting:
Quote:
All of the evidence we have points to the depth at which these corals are being collected as the problem causing factor. There is no rogue microbe attacking healthy elegance. There are many opportunistic organisms that will infect an elegance once it is damaged, or weakened. Which is what Borneman found. IMHO, there is no mystery here. The elegance we, in the states, receive from Indonesia, are collected at depths exceeding 100ft. The PAR, or amount of light, the coral is exposed to increases many fold as the coral is brought to the surface, during collection. This can causes physical damage in corals that posses zooxanthellae. Again, Borenman found this damage.
Thankfully, this is an easy problem to avoid. When we purchase an Indonesian elegance we can rest assured it has suffered damage on a cellular level. The odds of the coral falling victim to an infection, and dieing, is incredibly high. Australian elegance have proven they typically don't have these issues. All we have to do is stop purchasing Indonesian elegance, and buy exclusively Australian elegance. This not only saves the hobbyists money. It also stops the needless slaughter of animals. If we could shut down the exportation of elegance from Indonesia, it would give the population time to recover, and these corals could return to the shallows where our "hardy" Indonesian elegance were collected, back in the good ol days.
The bottom line here is that we MUST stop buying Indonesian elegance. The whole problem stems from over fishing to supply our demand. The only way to cure the problem is to remove the demand.

Currently dosing manaul. No kalk stirrer, no calcium reactor. Time for dosing pumps? I think at least four channels. Seems like the AM is a popular choice.

Hi guys,
Not sure if this is allowed but I found peppermint shrimps in JHB today. edit: I've been advised to rather offer the information via pm as they are not sponsors, so pm if you wanna know ;) I know how hard they are to find so I thought I'd let you guys know in case anyone else is looking. They had about 10 or so left after I got my 2 ;)
Mods if not allowed please delete :)

Is there a single supplement that contains the same elements as put out by a calcium reactor. if there is i could mix it in a auto top up tank to keep everything basically ok.
-
I'd love to keep a piano blenny! They're quite prolific down here as well. My question is, how much damage can they really do to other fish? Surely they're not gonna take chunks out of the side of my fish? Would the small wounds that it inflicts get infected? Or will it just keep nailing the same spot until serious injury results?
Bear in mind that the smallest fish I have is a pair of 8cm squirrel fish.

Anyone I just popped into a few LFS's to have a look and I saw Jungle Aquatics had a holding tank FULL of ocellaris clowns (black and white, as well as normal), many of which were misbar.
How hard will it be for me to get a pair of these down the line when I am up and running?

London - How did the crab gets its hairy chest? It sounds like a parody of one of Rudyard KiplingÂ’s Just So Stories, but it is a genuine question that scientists are seeking to answer.
A team of researchers from Oxford UniversityÂ’s Department of Zoology have uncovered a new species of hairy-chested crab on the ocean floor. The team found the crabs more than one-and-a-half miles beneath the surface of the Southern Pacific, near Antarctica.
Until the crustacean can be officially classified, the scientists have nicknamed it “The Hoff” in honour of Baywatch star David Hasselhoff, who is famed for his hairy torso.
It is a type of yeti crab, distinguished by the silky bristles covering their legs and claws.
But “The Hoffs” are the first yeti crabs to have fur covering their underside, or ‘breast’ area. Professor Alex Rogers, who led the research cruise, said the zoologists found the creatures packed together - up to 600 per square metre. They gather around a vent in the volcanic rock where hot water gushes out at temperatures of up to 400c. - Daily Mail

Hey Everyone!
I bought a heteractis malu from my LFS a few days ago and i knew that it was healthy because i read up on healthy anemones all night before i got it, i instantly fell in love with the look of this beautiful creature! when i put it into my tank i did all the things that you were meant to like turning all of the PH off and digging a hole in the substrate in which it could bury its foot in. and as i suspected in the morning he moved to a place where he would be more comfortable. he stayed there for 3 days right as rain with its tentacles fully spread out, then when i woke up this morning his foot was very big and unattached from the substrate, his tentacles werent fully closed infact he was quite big but the only problem was that we was on his side, for a few hours he attached his foot again but when the light went off he was unattached again?
does anyone have a answer to this very strange behaviour because ive been looking online for hours and hours trying to find an answer but no luck.
please help people, i wouldnt like to lose such a nice creature.

Hi guys,
I've just started a fairly large DSB (roughly 150cm X 50cm) and would love to get some mature sand from an established DSB...
Is anyone out there able to kindly donate? I'll exchange it with fresh sand;)!
If the same person has a few pieces of LR they wanna sell, I'll grab that too, also in exchange for fresh sand:tt2:, or cash!

So I was in CPT over December early January and took some time out (well 2 days because they spread out) to visit all the sponsor shops. It was so interesting to see because none of them were similar. Some look so professional (clean) as if you were afraid to purchase anything.
Then there were others you could go down the aisle and get excited to see whats around the next.
I did find some things one would normally wait months for down here and of course the price difference. Mainly in coral and lighting but the rest was way cheaper.
Anyway, I must say you guys and gals are really sploilt for choice. We currently only have one shop currently and one aisle so hence my excitement when I was there.
All in all, good exprience

Welcome to 2012, I certainly did not expect to start this year off with a bang !
At about 2h30 this morning, I heard a loud cracking noise which sounded like a fire cracker going off, followed by splashing watter. At first I thought we had popped a geyser, but as soon as I arrived in the lounge area, I was met with a stream of salt water gushing from our DT - 1,800x600x800
There was water everywhere, and my first instinct was to save my Profilux 3ex and in do doing, try and cut the power on the Battery backup Power Unit which consists of 2 x 12 Volt Deep Cell Battries connected to an Invertor.
The danger in doing this was that I was sitting down in one inch of saltwater on the tiled floor trying to disconnect the battery supply to the Invertor, because if the main Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker tripped, the Invertor would automatically kick in and supply the system with 230 volt power with no Earth Leakage option available. In other words you can't switch the power source off. Note to self - Build an earth leakage in on the battery backup system on our next installation.
Fortunately I was able to remove the cable from one of the batteries and in so doing, deactivate the Invertor. - Could have been fatal...
We spent the next six hours mopping up the 1,000 liters of salt water. Our house now smells like the seaside !
I managed to get the live rock, corals and fish into the sump below, albeit that it was a rather tight fit. Sofar so good, but I guess time will tell.
At this point in time, I believe we will start all over again, but most likely with a slightly smaller DT - perhaps 1,500x650x650 or so...
I guess we all have a disaster some time or other during this hobby. I just hope that ours is behind us.
I have attached a few pics of the unhappy event...
Have a great 2012 - I am certainly not going to allow this setback to get the better of me...
Take care now
Regards
ATHOL

I am thinking of getting rid of all the corals and making my tank a lush green garden tank, Will also need to get rid of the Tangs and replace them with some butterflies, reason being is i think that a planted tank will be easier to maintain and cost less. Plus i could have a few of the more non reef safe fish in there.
Your thoughts?
Tremayn you can relax will only happen once you take your corals back

Hi everyone,
this is my tank its a 15l pico/nano. I run purigen and rowa phos, i have 0.5 kg live rock rubble in the tank as well as 1.5kg in the display. i perform a 1l weekly water change and check the salinity daily and perform water test every 4 days.
I watched the tank start its main cycle and then another mini cycle occurred
I added 2 hermits, 2 trocus snails and 2 nassarius snails. the nassarius snails have doubled in size in about 2 weeks :o. i got some small zoa, green and orange colors :D. Last week friday i added a pom pom crab and a yellow clown goby. the goby is still very shy he hides most of the day, except when feeding and after feeding he rubs up against his reflection on the glass :confused1:.
will post pics when i figure out how to lol.
cheers

Hello there!
I've been lurking lots of forums and would like to build my own tank - love DIY :)
Can you design experts please look at my sketchup pics and tell me what I should change?
I would like a simple system that I can leave for a day or 2 without worrying about it too much
I would also like a system with lots of natural food (pods?) because I would love to eventually keep my favorite fish: mandarin
I have relatively limited space so I was thinking about a 1m x 1m x 500mm "cube" with a built-in refugium in the back which roughly measures 840mm x 270mm x 500mm, this leaves me with a "display" tank of roughly 1m x 700mm x 500mm
The blue pipes are "from tank to sump" and the red pipes back to display
The idea is for the refugium to overflow straight into the display and hopefully some of the "goggas" will flow with for my mandarin to chow ;)
Here's the "pie in the sky" view:
Left:
Top:
Bottom:
Back:
Right:
Overflow:
Refugium:
Sump pics:
I've seen on some other forums that guys split their DSB's into compartments so that they can clean / replace portions of it without disturbing the rest, you think this is a good idea?
Also as you can see the first sump chamber from the skimmer is just a big empty space, I was hoping this can act as a settlement chamber which I can syphon out? If anything I can also use this as a chamber for those new NP pellets and/or other filtration like carbon? And perhaps keep some frags on egg-crate in there?
Plumbing!?:
With regards to the plumbing, the whole setup needs to stand as close to the wall as possible due to space restrictions and I read here on MASA it's a good idea to have a bypass valve to control the flow through your skimmer? Not sure how I'm going to do the plumbing but will cross that bridge...
Sheesh that's a mouth full!
Please any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Regards

Hi all.
I just started out basically and i am looking at getting together a nice reef setup at home :)
Was in England last week and saw my friend had one and it really is surprisingly beautiful so i decided I need one too. lol. I had the whole fresh water tank thing for years and did really good but had to move so had to sell it. And besides marine/reef tanks are just on a different level. So i thought i would test it for myself.
I am looking at getting a 5ft tank at least as I do have plenty of space and loads of spare time for this. budget is ok so if anyone has any tips etc on where and how to shop for all the items i need i would really appreciate it. I don't want a pre-finished tank as I want to experience it from scratch. I found a few deals on tanks but any others would be awesome.
Please give me a shout as I really want to get into this hobby :)
Cheers:1:

First hybrid sharks found off Australia

The world's first hybrid shark, containing both common and Australian black tip DNA, have been discovered in Australian waters by local scientists, who say the discovery has implications for the entire shark world. (Pascal Geraghty, NSWDPI, AFP)
Sydney - Scientists said on Tuesday that they had discovered the world's first hybrid sharks in Australian waters, a potential sign the predators were adapting to cope with climate change.
The mating of the local Australian black-tip shark with its global counterpart, the common black-tip, was an unprecedented discovery with implications for the entire shark world, said lead researcher Jess Morgan.
"It's very surprising because no one's ever seen shark hybrids before, this is not a common occurrence by any stretch of the imagination," Morgan, from the University of Queensland, told AFP.
"This is evolution in action."
Changing sea temperatures
Colin Simpfendorfer, a partner in Morgan's research from James Cook University, said initial studies suggested the hybrid species was relatively robust, with a number of generations discovered across 57 specimens.
The find was made during cataloguing work off Australia's east coast when Morgan said genetic testing showed certain sharks to be one species when physically they looked to be another.
The Australian black-tip is slightly smaller than its common cousin and can only live in tropical waters, but its hybrid offspring have been found 2 000km down the coast, in cooler seas.
It means the Australian black-tip could be adapting to ensure its survival as sea temperatures change because of global warming.
"If it hybridises with the common species it can effectively shift its range further south into cooler waters, so the effect of this hybridising is a range expansion," Morgan said.
"It's enabled a species restricted to the tropics to move into temperate waters."
Climate change and human fishing are some of the potential triggers being investigated by the team, with further genetic mapping also planned to examine whether it was an ancient process just discovered or a more recent phenomenon.
Survival of the fittest
If the hybrid was found to be stronger than its parent species - a literal survival of the fittest - Simpfendorfer said it may eventually outlast its so-called pure-bred predecessors.
"We don't know whether that's the case here, but certainly we know that they are viable, they reproduce and that there are multiple generations of hybrids now that we can see from the genetic roadmap that we've generated from these animals," he said.
"Certainly it appears that they are fairly fit individuals."
The hybrids were extraordinarily abundant, accounting for up to 20% of black-tip populations in some areas, but Morgan said that didn't appear to be at the expense of their single-breed parents, adding to the mystery.
Simpfendorfer said the study, published late last month in Conservation Genetics, could challenge traditional ideas of how sharks had and were continuing to evolve.
"We thought we understood how species of sharks have separated, but what this is telling us is that in reality we probably don't fully understand the mechanisms that keep species of shark separate," he said.
"And in fact, this may be happening in more species than these two."

Hey, I've been on the forum for almost 3 and years now I've loved it, learning new stuff everyday that you couldn't have learned anywhere else. I've seen the forum grow from just a bit over 2000 to 5500+ members. I love to read through almost every thread that is active but nowadays I'm almost to scared to go through it because I may say something wrong. Almost every thread has some kind of an argument in over their and the others opinions of what is right and wrong. Also some members seem to go ranting on another reefer before they even know the full story and without even asking for it. For the past 2 and a half years I've only seen 2 or 3 members with red rep and now whe can almost make a group!! I know whe have grown much and also this will include a lot of new types of people, but can we please try to think before whe tipe. Rather suggest what should be done and start the conversation to get the member on the right track, because all that ranting will do is chase a possible great reefer away and p$ss you off for the day. Maybe I'm just imagining this and would love to here some input from you guys. Especially the mods as they usually have to clean up the messes:tt2:

All fish in the sea know how to find their food and in a tank it is even easier for them. The problem is that in the sea Mother Nature supplies food all day, every day. We as humans have other lives and usually don't want to feed our fish continousely. At least I don't. Also some fish are just designed to eat a tiny bit all day because that is just the way their digestive systems were designed. Fish like pipefish and seahorses don't even have a real stomach, just a short tube that acts like a stomach and intestine. These types of fish can not store food as other fish can. Other fish with similar digestive systems are mandarins and any other fish that normally lives on tiny food such as pods. These fish can not even eat a large meal if it were offered to them which is also the reason for their tiny mouths.
For this reason I am a big advocate of feeding stations.
My tank is old and loaded with pods so I really don't have to do this but sometimes a certain fish needs a little help even if the tank is full of pods.
I recently aquired a baby female that is very skinny. I am hoping she matures to mate with my large male.
I hatch and feed live baby brine shrimp to my tank every day and most of the fish eat them, even the larger gobies but this food disappears in a few minutes. Some of it gets skimmed off or caught in powerheads and the rest migrate to the surface because baby brine shrimp are attracted to light.
Most fish that would eat pods, live on the bottom so that food is lost to them.
This feeding station is designed for baby brine shrimp. It is just a plactic container with a mesh over it that barely passes baby brine.
It also has a tube running to the surface so I can fill it with shrimp.
I fill it in the morning and fish just hang around it all day sucking out shrimp.
Many shrimp also escape to be caught by the corals.
About 15 years ago I designed and patented this type of feeding station for adult brine shrimp.
http://www.breedersregistry.org/Arti...l_b/paul_b.htm (I do not sell these)
I have also used a different type of feeding station to feed moorish Idols.

If any of you have been using this particular skimmer than maybe you can help. I am about to install this new skimmer in a 5ft set up.This will replace a well used aquamedic turbo floater skimmer and I am hopping to get better results.
I am also building a new sump and will install the skimmer in the first stage chamber where water will be draining from the display. As the water level in this first stage stage will remain constant I would like to know what the ideal sum level should be to get the best results before I finalise the height of the baffle plate. Some sites have suggested between 8 & 10 inch's your comments will be appreciated. ( Measure twice cut once )

Good Day All,
I know one must take it slow in this hobby... I just want some input on how fast can one put corals to you setup... What is the waiting period...

Hey all
Happy to be part of the forum, I have a question for u guys and girls. I have a 3ft tank and 2ft sump, the main tank has 8kg of live rock. The lights are off and I have added a dead shrimp to aid in the cycle. Should I continue running the skimmer and I was wondering should I remove the puragen , chemipure as this should affect the ammonia levels as I also have ammonia stones in the sump but my gut tells me to remove all chemicals that can influence the water parameter/bacteria.

urgent help,
Over the last few days my tank has taken a total disaster, not sure how or why the ammonia spiked but with such bad effect my tank inmates were badly affected, with my angels being the first to go.
ammonia was in the red zone in the Sera test kits,ph was 8.7. and 0.09 nitrites.
what i did was two 25% wc over two days, dosed stability and amgaurd into the tank as instructed.
also tried lowering the ph which should help to nuetralize the ammonia if ph is lowered to about 7.
what else can i do?sailfin tang has black spots all over, foxface showin signs of red streaking
all still swimmin around but not eating.
850litre tank

Does SeaChem offer a ULNS system? I was thinking that if you combined Seachem Stability with the Aquavitro Fuel then you should land up with something similar shouldnt you?
I am wondering if I implemented the whole Aquavitro regime would the end result be a ULNS system? I see the salt mix goes on about it being for lns systems etc, yet they dont offer any LNS products like zeolith etc.
Im thinking if Stability is cheap and it: "contains a synergistic blend of aerobic, anaerobic, and facultative bacteria which facilitate the breakdown of waste organics, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.", then surely this could be viable if I added a carbon source?

I have a 10 gal. I'm not using for anything. I have excessive chaeto in my fuge, so I was thinking of putting some of the chaeto (with whatever pods come with it) into the 10 cal, with airstone, some kenya frags (which are littering my tank), a snail, and a hermit crab. Thought I might be able to grow out more pods, and use it as a kenya frag tank. I have dead-live rock piece and a few shells, decorations in there. With the small bio-load I'd have; would I need to run a filter? Does it sound like the bio-load would be fairly balanced? Thought I might throw in some carbon in a panti-hose. Any issues you folks can think of with this?

Looking for a 24G JBJ nanocube. Even if lid is broken or missing, as long as tank is in good condition! Will not be using the top. Does anyone have or know someone who might have?
Many thanks!

I been worried about my star fish as I have just learned i need live sand so my star fish won't starve to death. I have CC and apparently it has all the living organisms the star needs to sustain it's life in the tank, but i'm also told it will eat all the living organisms and the sand will be rendered "dead".... so whats any different from CC and live sand. I add food, vitamins, and nutrients in every 3 days. Calcium 2 times a week and iodine once a week. Is this not enough for it? Or should I get live sand which will end up dead in any case? :confused1:

Hey
Has anyone doen this with success and how can I achieve a nice breeding setup in the sump. The idea is to have a seprate compartment in my sump just to breed aiptasia for maybe a copperband in the future but more likely for nutrient exports. I would like to know what lighting would be best for about 30cm deep water? I was thinking maybe two 40W CFL's. I'm willing to try this and I know the risks, whould just like your input.

Good read to remond all of us what we should know about perameters

Hi All,
I acquired my first Marine Tank 2 months ago. I am loving it and learning everyday. I have kept Koi and Tropical fish for about 20 years but this is a whole new ball ( fish game). I bought an established tank with corals and 10 fish. To my great excitement my red mushrooms have spawned and today my clown fish laid eggs. WOW. Does anyone know where I can get a live Rotifer culture - or have any advice on raising Clown Fish fry? Any advice will be highly appreciated - as I have very little information, so far. Happy New Year to all. Regards, Eta

Hi everyone!
I have been having a problem with my hood deteriorating and as such when i switch my lights on a mini fire begins where the wires meet. My tank is a 1metre and the lights which fit it are t8-30watt. I have a selection of 6 bulbs, all of them are 30watt
I am looking for a ballast which will fit on top of my tank and house preferabbly 6 bulbs but will also be interested in one which can house 3 bulbs.
Thanks

I'm known as Triton on other SA forums but here I will be Tritonian aka Triton.
There is a Triton on here somewhere. So some of my photos will have water mark's displaying
Triton's 80G Shallow Patch Reef....unless of course Triton is willing to swop profiles :P
But it's cool :)
I recalculated my tank volume recently and it's closer to 415 Litres/ 100 Gallons.
This tank system is about 4 years old now. I've trimmed the corals plenty to create more space.
The scape is made up of four pieces Live rock. 3 Figi and 1 Kenyan.
The rest of the scape is just coral as it should be ;)

Hi all, happy new year !
I miss read the instructions on seachem reef builder (alk booster) and added a little to much over the last five days. My alk is sitting at 12.2dkh or 220ppm.
I have read different opinions, some say it's actually good for the corals some say it's to high. The corals and fish are all happy and the clams seem to be out and loving it. PH is 8.0.
What do you guys think?

Hi all here's some pics of my HS60, that I have butchered to pieces and back :P
I scrapped the chiller that came with the tank and added a small sump in order to use fans to cool the tank, I also had some idea of running a fuge type of setup and getting most of my filtration done naturally, which seemed to be working pretty damn well I just couldn't stand the pee-pond/algae dump look going on under my tank.....so i pulled it out, turned my sump into one giant holding area and dropped a TS2 and a Reef Octo carbon reactor in there.
I have a tank upgrade on the cards so I figured I may as well get what I need now. Hopefully the skimmer will manage to work on a tank this size, sure I can always make it work one way or another.
I am currently considering moving over to a ULNS system in the next month or two as my sps was not colouring up, but I have noticed now that it is colouring up so I might give it some time to see if it can come right as things are now.
K enough babble heres some specs and pics.
