Hi to all,

Been reading a few threads and i get the feeling i am definitely in the right place for some advice!

One of my life goals has always been to try and build my own marine tank (i know i aim high! Sorry....) i have read countless forums advising people to take it slow and read read read. So i am going to take that advice from the get go, which brings me here.

I am currently based in Bryanston, Jhb. I live in a complex on the third floor (no lift!) A couple concerns/questions i have,

1. Can anyone advise on a decent pet shop in the area?
2. Would it be a good idea trying to start my first tank on the third level of a complex? ( i assume there are water changes that need to happen etc?)
3. Placement and size of tank? Placement is a bit tricky as my apartment is a loft and by the nature of a loft it has a lot of natural light, the only real spot i have to physically put the tank is in the corner of the dining room, right next to a big sliding door ( Good/Bad idea?) Size, i know advise is bigger is easier to maintain however, the problem with bigger for me personally is heavier loads of water changes! Any advice on size to begin with?
4. Maybe the question you may ask before you can answer question 3 is, what am i wanting? Well, i picture in my mind a smallish tank with a couple live rocks, coral and some clown fish.

As you can tell, my major initial concern is the fact that i live high up and i am also currently renting on a 12month liase. So it is quite possible i am relocating in 12 months, so not sure how easy/difficult it is to move a tank once its settled?

Appreciate any help / advice given.

Hello everybody.

In 2009 i attempted to get a reef tank up and running. But was sent away for work for two years so had to can the idea but ive been reading and following all your threads in the time that i was gone. Im back at home and not going any where. So here goes attempt number two.

My DT specs. length 1600
width 740
height 650 water level at 600

My sump. Length 1220
Width 450
Length 450

Going to be running my TS 3 skimmer.
Two by SEIO 1500
Two by quad lighting hoods.
Not sure on the return pump yet.

Planning on having around 50kgs of live rock.

Will post some pics shortly once i upload them

Hi :)

I'm thinking about buying a volcano starfish. Does anyone have one? Are they easy to keep and really coral/livestock safe? Any reason that I should not get one or anything I should look out for?

Hallo all,

New to the group but not new to the Marine keeping industry - the bug bit again after a visit to my local pet store.

A lot has changed since my first marine tank working on a under-gravel filter and bio wheel but it is lovely to see all the new stuff available.

May I start with a question ? I am looking for a marine tank that breaks away from the norm. A circular one would be very nice and I see a number of nicely designed one's at pet shops but with low water volume which obviously does play a roll.
I am keen on getting a tank with length rather than width ideal for a corner of a house.

If anybody knowns where I should be heading it would be greatly appreciated

What do drivers do for LEDs?

Hey all,

I bought a meter long strip of LEDs for R200 to test how I'd be able to get LEDs going on my TL-550 ... so I cut about 15cm of it off and plugged it into 8x Duracell PLUS AA 1.5V batteries to see how long it would take the batteries to die and to see the brightness.

I soldered all the batteries together and connected them up to the 15cm strip last week Sunday at 2pm and I shit you not - the LEDs are still lit up.. not very bright anymore but they're still going.

So, why should I purchase a couple of drivers to power the LED strip when I could buy a 12V adaptor with a potentiometer that plugs straight into the wall and get it going like that? It clearly works coming from the battery test I did.

I got a empty tank from a friend yesterday And i have always dreamt of having a Huge Marine tank. This i want to get 100% right so i want to take my time to get all the right stuff and make it a long term project. I live in Pretoria and love the Aquariums at display in Cape Town Fish Market's.
So yes here i am and i hope that i can learn from you all and build my M.A over the next couple of years. Looking forward to meet you all and share some laugh's and tears.
