Hi all.

Can you guys give me 2 or 3 companies that supply MH lights. I'm looking for a few quotes to compare prices.

The only ones I know of are Waterboy, Aquatic Depo, Exotic pets and Aquamedic.

Are there any others?

To all the (if any) chemistry boffins out there.

I have access to as much calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate as I could ever need. But I have no idea of its quality or purity. It comes from a hyperplant which uses natural sea water and via electrolysis breaks it down to sodium hyperchloride to sterilize another sea water source.

Would these byproducts be at all useful and safe to supplement, in small doses, to a coral aquarium?

This is a new genus one of the seniors has recently discovered, in the process of being described and named.

This particular colony is splitting in two. Hanging on by just a thread.
LPS with Flatworm

Hi all.

I found these flatworms on some of my LPS corals last week. They don't seem to be doing any harm but I'm about to move the corals to a new system and don't want to contaminate it. I think they are in the Genus: Waminoa which are zooxanthellate flatworms so I wouldn't think they are harmful.

Has anyone come across these before and have some advice?

Quite a good book on larger scale aquariums. In essence the same principles apply to recreational reef keepers.

Its written as a series of publications but is more practical than scientific. Has good methods and ideas for aquascaping and life support systems.

Hi all.

I am starting up a 12 000 L series of tanks. Using 1080 kg of well matured live rock and 150 + kg of aragonite sand as a DSB. With my water source I've had issues with phosphates in particular. I plan on using a 10 L bypass reactor with granular ferric oxide to control this. Will this be sufficient?

Also in the system I have an RK2 skimmer, relatively small calcium reactor and titanium heat exchanger.

Its all exclusively for coral culture with high stocking densities.

water quality for hard corals

Hi all.

Whats the best pH for hard corals (an exclusively acropora tank)
I've been keeping it at 8.1 to 8.4 but have been told thats too high and should lower it to around 7.8.
Any ideas which is right?

Hi all. I'm new here, never realized that reef keeping had such a big following in SA! Its great!

Quite simply I'm looking for input on a few systems I'm setting up. Three in the long run but one 1 000 lt coral only tank for now. The other two are a 1250 lt and a 10 050 lt system.

It is up and running but has no filtration other than about 50 kg live rock. Water quality is a huge problem and temperature is even worse. I have just had a air cooled water chiller made and it is getting installed next week.

What I plan on doing is making a DIY wet/dry trickle filter placed on the tank outflow which then runs into the sump. In the sump will be 2 medium sized skimmers, 50 kg aragonite sand as a DSB, and a phosphate reactor on a separate loop. I am undecided on whether or not to use a calcium reactor or kalk reactor.

Also the top-up water comes from an ocean well point and has a slight sediment problem, 0.122 g/l! Fresh top-up (@10% per day) I think should be run through some sort of mechanical filter before being introduced into the system. Would a sand or cartridge filter be best for this?

And lastly, i need very good water flow for the spp we plan on keeping. Does anyone have an opinion on SCWD's? are they worthwhile and will they give adequate water movement in a 1000 lt tank?
