  South Side Outdoor - Finally!!

  okay , well i decided to start a thread on my tank .
  not sure if i will be able to keep it up to date , juggling work , and life in general being so demanding .
  any way here goes.
  i started the love for marine way before i earned a Rand and after arriving from the land of Robert, now 11 years after keeping bath water ( i still have one, but not sure for how much longer).
  
  since i have no space in the house , and a lovely outside area , i thought why not.
  
  so decided to pick up a tank in November , set it up and let it cycle while i travelled back to bob , to see fam for 10 days. this was 1.8 x 700 x 700
  
  
  
  
  after returning home , was looking for a decent light unit , and managed to fall apon this

  Ozone , Carbon And UV

  Hi all
  i have read a lot on the forums , but needed some clarity on these aspects.
  
  i wanted to know which of these are needed to run a tank.
  i have a tank outside , and a UV sterlizer was recommended to me, so i wanted which direction is best
  
  obviously carbon is cheap and can be replaced.
  i know about the hazards of the ozone , and seems there is a mixed reaction on the effectiveness of ozone and UV but they all seem to overlap in the uses.

  "Patching Tanks"

  Hi All
  i think i have been the most un lucky person ever
  i have taken over a second hand tank , that was setup and filled onsite , and was in perfect condition
  
  moved it to my house , and has managed to crack in 2 different panes in the last 3 weeks, and what makes this even more bizarre , is that not even a drop of water has touched it , it is standing empty
  
  even the company that i am dealing with is baffled at this scenario
  
  anyway , we are patching the tank in the interim , to test and see if there are any other issues , before we go and replace the pane
  
  any one had and using or have any comments on the patching of tanks , wheather good or bad.
  
  i have committed to patching the tank to test , but dont like the idea in the long run

  Base Rock / Live Rock

  Hi All
  over the holidays , i had setup my tank to cycle for a long period and now and a little stuck .
  i have managed to find another tank , which is bigger , and therefore need more of everything.
  i wanted to know if there is a big difference between live rock , and base rock (as some call it )
  i prefer the base rock look , and wanted to use this rather than the LFS Live rock ( that is a rip off in price)
  
  also can anyone direct me to a place to find large pieces of "base" rock in cape town , or surrounding areas,at decent prices.
  i am not prepared to pay a LFS for taking the rocks off the beach , and charging for it.
  the tank is going to be 2.5m x 90 x 90 , so the bigger the pieces , obviously the better

  does anyone know know of a good company to move a tank in cape town.
  i need a 2.5m x 1m x 900 mm tank moved from newlands to claremont. as well as a steel stand
  
  i may need some water storage bins for a few days as well, to store as much of my existing water.
  can anyone suggest a reliable and reasonably priced company
  i need this done ASAP

  Genral Questions And Discussion

  Hi all.
  i have been part of the forum for some time , and appreciate all the input that goes into the site.
  while there is a wealth of info , i feel there is too much for someone to take in as a beginner , and this is the reason i have put this hobby off for so long.
  
  i think too much info , makes people scared ( as i was) and very hesitant to start the hobby.
  
  while many people in the fish hobby realize it is a constant drain on the wallet, together with a whole lot of other problems, i must admit , the forum put the fear of god in me to start , especailly since many people make you think this is rocket science.
  
  i have chatted to many people , while picking up quality second hand equipment , and they all seem to say it isnt that difficult.
  
  so i am on my way to starting my tank , but getting all my hardware and stuff now, getting my tank cycled and then will start with livestock next year.
  
  i have taken good warning , not to be in any rush, at all.
  
  i have many questions , that i have picked up from reading various post the forum , and to find final answers is difficult, as i guess everyone and there setup is unique.
  
  so my first question is - dosing or Reactors.
  the reason why i am asking , is that with many large tanks you see on the forum, the setups are with large reactors , co2 bottles and charmers to run , a hundred million different things.
  
  my tank at the moment , is a 1.8m x 70cm x 70 , with 1.5 m sump and eventually this setup will get bigger (obviously).
  i wanted to know do you invest in reactors and stirrers , or go , the dosing route and invest in say a profilux doser .
  i wanted to know the pros and cons of each method.
