Well I have had a problem with Bryopsis for the last 18months. I have tried cooking my live rock figuratively and literally. Dark tank with one mo*r of a skimmer, dosing magnesium, boiling the rock, scrubbing it etc.
Read techm was the best but could not get it anywhere - until I found a gallon on Takealot for about R450-00. Took about a month to get here but was worth the wait. Wow what a difference and works like a bomb. As the bryopsis died off I removed it with a syphon pipe and have had virtually nothing for the last two weeks and the little bit that is still there is dying off.

Urgent help needed Fish gasping for air

I moved my livestock over to a new tank about a month ago and all went suprisingly well. About 3 days ago I saw a white spot or two on my regal and as a preventative measure connected my ozoniser to my skimmers air intake. All still ok. This morning I added some mushrooms to the tank and swithched off the 4 powerheads to allow them to setlle - had alll been removed off some LR.
About 3 hours later I noticed my one cleaner doing the death dance in my tank and my one yellow tang gasping for air and stuck against the overflow mesh with no energy to move.
Anyway I stopped the ozone and turned on the powerheads and added airstones and there seems to be an improvement. I have however lost a small goldie and my yellow tang although looking a bit better is not well. Could it be the ozone or lack of circulation. It seemed to happen very suddely. I had fed the fish an hour earlier. Was running the ozone on 50mg/h - max on the small hailea ozoniser. -
Phosphate Reactor advice needed

I have just set up a new tank - about 900l. In my previous tank which was about 500l I used two two little fishies 150 phosban reactors one with carbon and the other with phos remover. If I recall if used for phosphate removers they are rated for about 500l or so - each.
I have also got a reef octo phosphate reactor rated for 2000l and a merlin red sea fluidised filter.
Now my question: Do I use the two 2 little fishies reactors for phos remover and keep the 2000l reef octo one side for a future upgrade?
The problem is if I add the required amount of Extrax Phos in the Reef Oco reactor it looks so empty - can I add a filter sock or two with carbon as well? Or do I chuck the carbon in the inlet into the sump below my filter floss?
Any ideas of what to do with the fluidised filter?

What Skimmer??

I have ordered my new tank and am getting my stand made up at the moment.
The tank is 1.8m x .7 wide and.65 high, the sump is 100 x .5 x .5.
The decision I am now faced with is what skimmer should I get. I currently have a Aqua Medic Turboflotor Multi SL and am thinking of getting a AM Turboflotor Blue 3000. Any one used these before?
The other alternative is the Reef Octo 5000 Bubble Blaster (secondhand). The only thing that puts me off is the size - uses up a lot of space in the sump, headroom needed under the tank and I believe a mission to get out of the sump to clean. I need to make a decision on the skimmer soon so your advice would be appreciated. :) -

What T5 Tubes?

Thought I would start the new year with new tubes in my lighting units.
But let me start at the begining:
I decided to go over to T5's after having bought my tank with a canopy fitted with a set of halides. Loved the look but had heat issues which then became evapouration issues so when the canopy needed to be redone I thought that this would be the ideal oppurtunity to move to T5's. As I am renting my landlord was not to happy when I asked him if I could suspend my lighting unit from the ceiling so instead I got two chinese T5 54w Units with led moonlights instead of the well made local (Durban) ones.
Anyway algae became a major problem and I eventually found that these had been supplied with the wrong bulbs - oops. So I purchased some of the cheaper well known bulbs as replacements. I wanted the more exspensive german ones but thought id save and move onto those later. So the cheaper ones pins broke easily and were not the quality I expected and was not happy with the lighting so after 4 months these also had to go. So a mate of mine got hold of some cheaper bulbs - german bulbs( anyway say they are made in germany on the bulb) from our local electrical wholesaler. Now these are Sylvania Aqua and Coralstars but wow what a difference. I still intend going for the "exspensive" german bulbs but thought I would try the cheaper german alternative first.
Has anyone used these before and how do they last?
At R150-00 a bulb I am not expecting miracles but expect them to do a lot better that my previous ones.
Suppose the moral of the story as with everything in this hobby rather dont skimp on certain things and buy right the first time. -
Tank in the planning

So guess what?!
After 18 mnths my tank has "got" too small - damn salt water makes everything shrink!!!
So with the wife being preggies I am faced with either starting an additional nano type or going bigger.
She bought me my chiller and LR so is cool with the whole marine issue - well at least until now.
So with this in mind I have now for the first time got to convince her that it is money well spent.
Now the question I ask is what do you guys think, Current tank is 1250x 600x600. Should the new one be 1500x900x600 or 1800x600x600. I pesonally think that the width will be more pleasing to the eye that the length. Also the 1500 length will allow me to use my existing equipment especially the lighting units.
Any thoughts? -
