Wet vs. Dry skimming.

Hey guys.

Thought i would start this thread for all the new guys....(and me).

What is the difference/purpose between wet and dry skimming?

Pro's and Con's of either form of skimming?

And then lastly, will it not be beter instead of one over rated skimmer, to have 2 slightly smaller skimmers. One skimming wet and the other one skimming dry??
Or will that cancel eachother out?

Frag tank setup help needed.

Hey guys.

So i receantly bought two frag tanks from a fellow reefer, and now im stumped!

Its 2 120x40x29 tanks, both drilled on a stand.

Now first off , what filtration would you guys advise i use?
Was thinking of going bare bottom on both tanks. Maybe use the one tank as a sump ie all LR and skimmer. Maybe some carbon. Or use a differnt tank as a sump for both frag tanks.

Then use the the top tank for fragging/grow out/holding tank.

Would it be a good idea to keep some fish in there eg so chromises or damsels for the biological side? And if yes, what fish as both tanks are going to be open top.So no jumpers please:lol:

Then lighting wise i was thinking of just T5's.

I intend to start with just softies and lps. And later on move over to sps.

And i will be setting up my other new setup in the next 3 months, and thought that i can use the frag tanks as a holding tank for the corals destind for the new setup.

Your thoughts and input please.

I have about 5 to 10 kgs of LR with the following growing all over..

Mushrooms (4 diff colours and about 30 mushrooms in total)
2 Smallish pieces of LR with GSP.
So zoas(nothing fancy.Think its the Transkei zoas)
Some sponges ect.
One or two leathers and some pincusions.
And LOTS of Aptiasia!!!

O and 5 to 10 kg of aragenite.

Free to whom ever collects it first or pays for the packaging and shipping.

This is all still in my nano, and i cant shut it down till all of this is gone.(And i need to move the tank asap as im renovating my office and workshop!!)

Mods i dont have pics at the moment.And all of this should be gone before the end of the day.Hope this is acceptible??

Hey guys.

Im helping a friend setup a fowlr shop dispaly tank, but need some advice and sugestions.

The tank: Lenght either 1.2 or 1.5 m
Whith:450mm or 500mm max.
Height: 450mm to 600mm max.

What could one keep in such a medium size tank.Angels and tangs would be ideel but species and amount may be a problem.

Then Filtraion wise i was thinking in the line of a over rated skimmer and phos & carbon reactor and or a NP reactor.

Flow.....mediumish??

And lastly lighting. Was thinking 2 to 4 T5's should be more than enough. But what rating to go for, as we want the colours of the LS to really stand out.

O and the tank will be sort of a room devider with 3 viewing sides.

Any advise or suggestions would be welcomed!!

Hey guys

Im in the planing stages of my new setup and need some sump ideas and advice.

The space availible in the cabinet will be 60x60x80 or 100. Still deciding on the height.

Skimmer im going to use will either be a BH1000 or a TS1.
Maybe 2 sumps stacked on top of each other??

Any and all advise will be great!!

Hey guys

Is it possible to add a uv black light to a tank?
Are there any negatives in doing so ect?
Would a black light not bring the florecent colours of the corals out even more?

Hey guys

A friend of mine asked me to help him setup a basic display tank in one of his seafood resturants.

I was thinking in the line of a basic 4ft DT with a nice cabinet ect.
Obvisouly it will be a FOWLR system.

Any advise or things to consider??

eg tank design(6mm is to risky)
stocking list(hardiest fish only)
ect.

Difference between a puffer/toby/boxfish

What is the difference between a puffer and a toby and a boxfish/cowfish?

Are they the same family or not? Are they all odd shaped or not?

Hey guys

Im seriosly considering getting a snowflake/dwarf eel.
But first i would like to know the pro's vs. the con's of keeping them.

Eg. What size tank?
What filtration?
How many can i keep together?
Feeding?

If i do get it/they will be in there own tank.

Any advise or personal experience will help alot.
I did do some reading on the web but got alot of mixed feelings about them.
Some say they are good to have, others say they are nightmares!

What would be beter and why?
2 x 70/75w Mh 20k or 4 x 24w t5 2x 10k and 2x atinic ??

This will be for a sps dominated nano tank.
