Hello all,
I just thought I would highlight the atrocious behaviour of a human being that has actually led me to be ashamed of the human race.
I am not willing to post the link or vid - it is that disturbing.
The article was recently posted on a news site and showed a teenage girl throwing live puppies into a river with not a hint of remorse.
It sickened me to the core! That we as humans can do something so atrocious and not feel utter shame.
I know this might resonate with some fellow reefers as I feel we all have a love for nature as a whole and to see this sort of hatred and carelessness is sad.
I trust we are always able to stop and see the bigger picture and not forget who we are.
Sorry for the rant but it is a terrible action that I hope is one day punished.

Good day all, some pics taken a while ago of my tank. Thought I would send them out, to give an update of how things have gone. Tank is running smoothly, and will update after exam on Wed.

Good day all, my Yellow Angel took a turn this morning for no apparent reason. My tank has been running for over 8 months with no losses, and just tested parameters which all seem to check out. The Angel started acting up yesterday where he kept swimming in 1 specific area of the tank (in line with the powerhead flow) and did not move the whole day.
My wife picked this up and said something was wrong, of which everything seemed fine as he was still swimming freely, just not moving from the spot. His gills looked exceptionally red which we could see through the yellow of his body, but this was the only indication something was wrong.
Today he is on his way out and cannot seem to swim and is simply lying around breathing very heavily. I placed him in the sump after the Flame Angel began attacking his once he took a turn. Any ideas? Do I remove him before he dies? Do I move my fish? Do I treat the tank? If so, what treatment? I will appreciate any feedback or advice.
Thanks.
My stock is:
2 Cleaner shrimp
2 Flame Goby's
2 Orange Spot Gobies
2 Clown
6 Chromis
1 Regal
1 Flame
1 Tang (Browny color - but close up has nice white speckles)
1 Anenome
2 Pincushions
640 l tank
200l sump
Skimmer rate for 1500l.

Hi, I have a BH100 I am selling, as my new tank is starting soon. I would prefer a pick-up in Durban as I don't have time to get to the PO or drop-offs.
If no Dbn offers then I will sell to anybody interested.
Skimmer in good condition. Needs std clean, and worked great in my last tank.
Available immediately.

Good day, can anyone explain the difference (despite the obvious footprint size)between the OCTX 160 and 200.
I see they are built differently i.e the 160 has the pump installed underneath with it blow up into the chamber whereas the 200 has a side mounted pump.
Both pumps are the same and they are rated equally. Which is the preferred model and if it is the 200 is it worth the extra R600?
I appreciate any feedback.
Thanks

Hello all, well I am finally in a position to plan a new tank and tomorrow tells whether I can build a new tank or simply upgrade to a larger unit (my current tank sprung a leak and LFS is going to swop out a new unit, of which I am trying to request they build me a tank or will see if I am forced to take a branded model in a larger size).
I have been surfing this site for days now gathering data and info on what tanks I like and systems that look great.
Personally I want a clean looking tank with no visible pumps or wires inside it. I want to try and run as much flow and current from return pumps.
I want to create the system so as to initially have a skimmer in place and then build a algae scrubber as well. As time and money allows I would like to upgrade to the other components that will allow me to have a tank with plenty of brightly lit coral and softies with a few nice fish running around.
I would like to bounce a few ideas around on a few items I have in mind for my new system to get started and then ask for some feedback.
The collective knowledge will be able to help steer me in the right direction if I am not able to do something or possibly do it better another way.
So I will start posting details after this post.
Here goes.....

Good day all, if I wanted to get some live sand for a DSB, can I just collect this from a shallow bay? Was thinking Umhloti.
Also, is there any difference in running a DSB in-sump or just having a DSB in your main display? I like the look of a rippled sand-bed in the display with bright white sand.

Hi all, I have a nice yellow pin cushion which has been thriving in my tank for the last 3 months. However in the last 6 weeks I am having more and more fan worms coming up everywhere. They are growing on 1 or 2 rocks specifically and have now covered the base rock of my pin cushion. I have left it; but on inspection last night I noticed that the pin cushion's flesh was a little eroded where the fan worms has grown. I scrubbed them off last night (pin cushion obviously not happy about that) but I am sure they are just going to grow back.
Is this serious? Can they cause damage to the pin cushion should I keep scrubbing them off or just leave them.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
THanks,

Hi Guys - I have a mystery occupant in a piece of coral of mine.Every so often I notice a plume of milky-type liquid ejected out of a hole at the top of the coral.
I can never see where this comes from but it happens quite frequently. I always thought it was a crab or something
But last night whilst watching the tank under moonlights I noticed alot of very thin tentancle-like arms coming out of the hole. These tentacles are extremely thin and look almost like hairs or strands of algae - however they have a mind of their own and seem to be feeling around the coral rock. They are like octopus arms and seem to feel and reach their way around. My fish are not bothered by this although the Regal Tang sleeps right next to this hole at night - should I be worried?
If I was able to take some pics I would, but the tentacles are too small/thin to pic up on camera and you only get to see it under moonlight.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi All,
Something I've noticed when starting up my tank is all the noise generated by the pumps in the tank.I have a Seio 1100, juwel 600l/h as well as a reeftek hang-on with King2 pump.
If you put your ear to the tank there is an incredible droning sound; and being a scuba diver I know how easily sound travels through water. Surely this affects or disturbs the fish? I am sure they would prefer a silent type environment.
Also it's not great having the hum in the background in the lounge (versus a completely silent tank).
My question is; has anybody ever looked into a silent tank ,whilst still having adequate flow?
Ultimately i would like to have a tank with natural wave type surges and zero noise as well. Is this possible.

Hi All,
Lost my Angel yesterday out of nowhere. Tank has been going well, stable conditions.Angel was fine all week-end and then after feeding yesterday, he started flopping around and falling down.Couldn't swim anymore and was leaning up against a rock (Feed on a mixture of Omega 1 flakes, frozen mix and marine granules - same stuff since tank started - no excess feeding).
By yesterday afternoon, his body was totally stiff (couldn't swim using his tail and his fins were badly damaged - might be cleaner schrimp?), breathing heavily and lying down.
My other fish were fine.
Only new addition to my tank is a Seio 1100 and 2 new moonlights - purchased Thursday. The powerhead caused a bit of detritus to be blown up around the tank, but has had no ill affects on the other fish (2 cleaner schrimp, 4 snails, False Royal Grammar and Oscellaris Clown). Only have run the Seio for an hour at a time when home - need to place it properly, its very strong in my 180l tank.
Temp stable at 28deg, salinity 1024, Ph 8.2 and Nitrite = 0.05
Cleaned cannister (rinsed components in tank water) on Wed and did 5% water change.
Tank been running for 8 weeks and had a few fatalities (3 Clown - LFS said it was a velvet outbreak + - 4 weeks ago)
PS: When we got Angel, he had a bad case of Cloudy eye, which healed up nicely with Heal All, about 2 weeks ago.
Have a new Reeftek hang-on skimmer waiting to be installed.
As this was a 2nd incident, I have moved fish to another persons tank as well as all my LR. Will be restarting my tank this week (friend has offered to use water from his tank to assist start-up).
Will only be keeping my Arrogonite, and LR; otherwise all else will be fresh.
Any opinions, views suggestions. See my tank specs in my thread.
Regards,
Warren

Hi all, my two oscelaris clowns have died rather suddenly.
first one yesterday pm and the other this morning.
They were a little on the thin side and not eating alot. I was given frozen mix and Tetra freshwater granules for feeding from LFS.
Both clowns were very small and did not eat the granules, but did get a little of the frozen in.
They're difficult to feed as the food hits bottom before they get it, after which they leave it.
I did syphon detritus off the bottom on Sun and did 20% water change due to this.
Tank is new - 3 weeks. But have no problems to date and the Maroon clown and cleaner schrimps are fine.
Running a Tetra 700l/h cannister and also built-in filter.
Been taking water samples through to LFS and tests came back as fine (not sure which tests were done).
The clowns were acting strange in that they were swimming vertically and breathing quickly and heavily.
There were no signs of any disease on their skins.
Last night I tried to feed again and the oscelaris would not eat at all, swam through the food. Maroon still feeding fine. This morning dead.
The Maroon was not looking good this morning and appears to be breathing heavily as well.
What do I do?
Any suggestions?
Called LFS and they said to treat for odenium.

Hi All,Well after tons of reading I am finally posting a thread.
I was given a awesome looking Juwel 180 by my wife for my birthday and this was setup by the store before I came home. The bug has bitten and I am wanting to get it running smoothly.
Specs are:Juwel 180l, 2 X T5 highlights 44w Actinic and marine glow, Juwel built in filter and power head (600l/h), heater, Tetratec 700l/h cannister, Arrogonite gravel, 4kg live rock,5kg bio rock (from LFS tanks), 2 std clowns,1 maroon clown and 2 cleaner shrimp.
I want to run this smoothly but don't have a sump or skimmer. There is little if no space in the cabinet for a sump - unless I make a mini 20cm wide by 20cm deep and 40cm height one) - thats why I went with the Tetratec cannister.
Most forum talk seems to hinge around sumps, protein skimmers and deep sand beds for filtration. So I am leaning towards making a sump, and buying a skimmer.
I want to try do this as neatly as possible and avoid at ALL costs water spills in the cabinet (some clever person at Juwel made the cabinet out of chip board/Melamine) - so cannot afford spills.
I used to run a marine tank about 15 years ago and have gone through all the spills, thrills and waterchanges and know what it's mostly about. I am hoping that there is a cleaner easier way to run this without a: spending a fortune, b: making too much mess, c: turning it into a chore and packing it in again.
Advice for a re-starter?
Where to from here?
Can it be done?
Thoughts or comments?
