I just found this chap cruising on my Star polyp. Its a Nudibranch of some sort....
Is it Good or Bad? Or should I sump him?

Its a beautiful speciman. More or less 10cm in diameter and hight during the day. At night it expands its tentacles to between 12 to 15cm in diameter and hight. I feed it twice a week lance fish or mysis shrimp.
It needs a medium to large tank or a spot where it can expand without touching other corals. It has a large leathery tube that needs to be buried into soft substrate.
Reason for selling: I dont have a big enough spot where it can expand without hindering corals around it. -

Could this work?
We are all aware of the potential problems when theres a power failure and you dont have back-up power!
Going through the threads there are so many people in panick standing with spoons etc trying to aerate their tanks. Now I was thinking.... and please dont kill me for this. The small Bilge pumps we use on a boat to pump water out of the hull could work to aerate your tank. It is powered by a 12V battery. Hang the pump in your display tank or sump, with a outlet pipe into your DT. Lift it out of the water. The force of the water falling into the DT would help with adding oxygen.
Any "negative" ideas :biggrin:;) -
Night time ph drop!

What is to be thought a "normal" nighttime PH drop?
My tanks PH has since startup always been between 8.10 to 8.20. Never higher. Now I know during the night the PH drops. My PH drops about 0.10 to 0.15 during the night. Is that an excepted PH drop. It picks up to the above reading during the day again.
The rest of my parameters are always around:
KH 9 to 10
Calc 420 - 450
Magn 1320 - 1350 -

These 2 frags are the same size as the two Xenias in the background, if not bigger when fully open.
These 3 frags are between 5 - 7cm when fully opened.
The photos were taken shortly after the Xenias were taken off the rocks. They have not opened.
I would also accept swopping them for zoas. -
How to detach a Pulsing Xenia?

Anyone have success in moving these guys? I have two sets of Pulsing Xenia thats just taking over. Theyre spreading like wildfire and is growing into other corals. I urgently need to detach some of them.

What is this on my Mushrooms?

Can someone please identify this on my mushrooms. It is spreading to all my mushrooms now. It is brown in colour and if I view it through my macro lens it appears to have a white "mouth" in the middle. It does not have a hard shell.
What is this and what should I do?

Chaeto/caulerpa

Now you guys have me worried. I have a refugium with a DSB and an abundance of mainly Caulerpa and also a healthy ball of Chaeto growing in it that is attached to my DT. I started this refugium 15 months ago when I had a 300liter tank mainly because I battled high phosphates in the tank and also as a display tank with maybe one day seahorses. That was the plan!.
Have now upgraded to a bigger tank. Had the refugium linked to the new tank as well. It really works perfectly, feeding my DT with lots of little critters. The caulerpa is growing at a phenominal rate so I prune it back vigorously every week. I dont want the refugium to become to overgrown and scraggly looking as it doubles as a nursery for any small or new fish that needs more attention. (still dont have the seahorses, and dont think I'm going that way.... theyre just to fragile). The refugium is teeming with small copepods and other little critters.
What worries me now is this "going sexual thing" of Caulerpa! Any telltale signs that I can watch out for before this happens. I found the caulerpa growing at such a pace in comparison to the chaeto. Will cut them back even more to give the chaeto a better chance. And then for peace of mind go over to only chaeto. -

My little "man" is becoming" an adult!
After adding my Yellow Banded maroon clown a year ago we immediately went in search for a tiny partner for her. Unfortunately no Yellow banded juveniles were available, so we opted for a tiny, tiny little white banded "male" for "Sissa" (the advice was that we are taking a massive risk as she would not accept him).
:P Well......She thought he was just extremely handsome from word go!!!
They have been producing eggs at least once a month!
The past few weeks things have changed in the Anemone home! "Boeta" is becoming more Yellow by the week!.
I googled this and yes, Yellow banded Maroon clowns are all born with white stripes and as they mature they develop the yellow bands.
I am so chuffed..... A yellow banded pair!

It dawned on me this morning as I sat staring at my 30 odd "babies" swimming around in their glassbox!
I love them to bits... everyone very special with their own individual personality and chosen out of many others..... cry myself sick when one dies.... they're always happy to see me... will grow old with me..... and yet....
I will never be able to hugg and kiss them..... they live in a different world... and they are just fish!!!!

Pistol shrimp has a new friend!!

After reporting on 5/10/2011 that my beloved Yellow Watchman Goby died and left my Pistol Shrimp all alone and hidden away to the extent that I thought he will not make it, I finally got a beautiful Watchman yesterday.
I added him to the tank and within 15 min I heard the Pistol clicking. The Goby dissapeared under the rock and voila..... out they came.... together..... big buds!!!! The goby is taking fish from the feeder and spitting it back into the hole where the pistol is. I am so chuffed... :biggrin::biggrin: -
What Test Kits are you using?

Hi,
I am battling high calcium parameters in my tank lately. Its seems I am not the only one now and theres also great discussion on the causes of it on MASA.
At this stage the discussions on the possible causes are concentrated around : the saltmix used (the correct/or not, mixture therof),
or faulty test kits.
1. What has been established so far is that the problem tanks in question have all been using Seachem Reefsalt. Seachem Reefsalt are being sold at very special rates by the LFS' the past few months so naturally a lot of reefers are using it!
OR,
2. Our test kits: As we are presumably all using different test kits, it will be near impossible to establish "good" from "bad" brands. As with all things in life, there will also be personal preferences.
My question is: I'm using API test kits that is not readily available nor widely used in South Africa. I buy it in Houston when I visit threre. It came highly recommended by the LFS shops in Houston and also online by Fosters&Smith Aqauatics. Have been using it for more than a year now and are really pleased with API as they are extremely user friendly. I have tested them to Salifert and Tropic Marin getting the same results.
Are you familiar with API test kits and what is your opinion on them. -

Urgent: Yellow watchman goby

Hi All,
I am seriously looking for a medium to large Yellow Watchman Goby. Mine died for no apparent reason after being with a Pistol Shrimp for more than a year. They were extremely close and very happy. I am afraid the Pistol will perish now as he does not come out into the open without his Watchman. I am feeding him with the feeding tube to make sure he gets food.
I have been to most of the LFS in the Johannesburg/Pretoria area but they all have extremely small specimens, which would not be wise to pair with the Pistol.

Back-up power????

I need advice.... I seriously need back-up power urgently. It feels I am really gambling with "luck" now. I have a generator as back-up power now, but it means nothing if I'm not here to start it or if the power goes off at night and I dont wake up :sweatdrop:.
My tank setup is a 1200 liter (DT + sump + display refugium). What I ideally would like is to have a UPS to keep the return pump running until power comes back on or in worst case scenarios, till I can start the generator. The return pump is an EHEIM 1262 (900 GPH).
I know one can build amazing back-up systems but what about buying a "ready made" UPS/system capable of doing the job.
Any suggestions on what to buy and where to buy?
