Sep-Art Artemia Cysts from Ocean Nutrition are specially treated brine shrimp eggs which have shells that can easily be filtered using a magnet. Most of us know well that hatched brine shrimp rise towards the light and the egg shells sink to the bottom but the few unhatched eggs actually float, and these are the particles which can cause problems if they are accidentally fed to baby fish along with artemia nauplii (baby brine shrimp).

Ocean Nutrition’s Sep-Art Artemia Cysts are brine shrimp eggs coated with some kind of ferrous material that attracts the shell towards magnets, and is obviously safe for use around aquariums. Ocean Nutrition has been making a commercial scale version of the Sep-Art Artemia Cysts and magnetic filter for several years now but the new kit brings the easy brine shrimp cyst separating technology to the masses.

The Sep-Art kit includes a packet of the coated Sep-Art artemia cysts as well as a uniquely designed beaker with a magnetic base to help catch all artemia cyst shells and unhatched brine shrimp eggs. The Sep-Art separating beaker’s magnet is designed to have a “radial” magnetic field which prevents it from interacting too much with other Sep-Art beakers on a table as well as nearby electronics. We believe that we were quoted 25 Euros for the Sep-Art kit from ocean nutrition and available in July to European brine shrimp users with availability in the wild west coming later this year.

The Deltec SC1455 protein skimmer has a surprisingly entry-level price point from the renowned German manufacturer. With the hot white custom AquaBee needle wheel pump inside the skimmer body, the Deltec SC1455 has cut down its in-sump footprint as well as cutting out the diffuser plate. We know what you’re thinking, and we immediately question how turbulent the skimmer would be without some kind of diffuser. Our skepticism about the wisdom of this design move was immediately refuted after walking to the 200 gallon-ish AquaIllumination/D-D Marine Solution display aquarium.

Seeing the extra mixing height of the Deltec SC1455′s sans diffuser plate it was easy to see that the pump was well tuned for the height of the skimmer’s functional mixing volume, and not too turbulent. Deltec’s SC1455 measures in at 530mm (21 inches) high, it draws 600 lph while using only 11 watts and is rated for tanks up to about 800 liters, or about 240 gallons. For an estimated retail price of 300 Euro, if the SC1455 Skimmer can come to America for the approximate currency exchange price of $384 it would be one of the cheapest ever from Deltec and likely to be snapped up fast by people who’ve always wanted a Deltec but felt the price was often out of reach.

The AI EXT mounting system is the name for the recently released rails, tank mount and hanging kit for AI Sols and the AI Vega. First spied at the AquaIllumination MACNA booth, the gorgeous as heck EXT mounting system make short work of getting some of the best LED lights over your reef tank, in a simple and intuitive way. The AI EXT mounting system comes in silver or black, in many different sizes to suit your particular tank needs.

The retail pricing for the AI EXT mounting system is pretty reasonable. the EXT Hanging kit is only $35, and the rails range in price from $24.95 for the six inch EXT 6, to $64.95 for the EXT 48, presumably 48 inches long. It is unclear whether the rail kits include a tank mounting part but at those prices, shouldn’t be more than a couple more bones to get the whole EXT mounting system in business. The information about the AI EXT mounting system has gone out to dealers today so it shouldn’t be too long before we see some sexy mounting of AI Sols and soon the AI Vega. [AquaIllumination]

Fluval LED striplights are taking the approach of using an army of low output LEDs in several colors to reproduce the most even and broad spectrum LED light possible. Hagen is making a big push into higher end and saltwater aquariums the last few years, especially with its Fluval Sea line of aquarium products and the Fluval Sea and Fluval LEDs are a sure fire sign that Rolf Hagen & Co are truly committed to making a push into this space.

The Fluval LED striplights come in three colors: a 5200K freshwater Fluval LED, a 6700K marine and plant Fluval LED and a 25,000K Reef Fluval LED. Of particular interest to you will be the Fluval Sea LED with six different types of SMD LED diodes, including four shades of blue and UV, a little bit of red and a broad spectrum white LED. Fluval Sea LEDs are designed to be used with extendable side brackets stretching out each of their four LED striplight sizes to fit many different tank lengths.

The three colors of Fluval LED striplights will come in an 18, 24, 36 and 48″ long models and a square nano model which is ideally suited to lighting up small cube shaped aquariums. The Fluval LED and Fluval SEA LED sriplights looked great over the display tanks at Hagen’s InterZoo 2012 booth; the striplights are very attractive matte black with a stylized heatsink and the corals and plants lit up with them had great color and pop. For reef tanks and more serious corals growth you will need to use multiple strips, especially for stony corals, but that diffused broad spectrum lighting will make sure there are no hot spots or dark spots in the aquarium.

The TMC AquaHabitat Spy Lens is a simple glass-mounted magnifying glass for getting a good close up look of your aquarium. The brand spankin new Spy Lens is convex on both sides providing a good monoscopic view inside the tank, and a screw-activated suction cup-mount holds the lens on to the glass so hard that we were unable to pull it off with a good deal of pressure.

Coming in two sizes, the TMC AquaHabitat Spy Lens is available in a 70mm diameter lens with a 6X magnification and a 90mm lens with a 2.5X magnification. The packaging shown above is only for display here at InterZoo 2012 and when it is delivered the AquaHabitat Spy Glass will be wrapped in a much nicer retail box; pricing is still to be determined, and the image below shows a quick snapshot haphazardly made made with an iPhone 4.

The Panda Banggai Cardinalfish is an exciting new strain of Pterapogon kauderni which is a huge achievement for a fish which has captivated the hearts and minds of so many fish lovers. Hailing from a huge operation of banggai cardinalfish aquaculture, the Panda Banggai or the Panda Kauderni features a back half which is almost all black.

From the second stripe to the ends of the caudal peduncle and the tail fin, the skin of the Panda Banggai is dark black, bringing a strong contrast to the Banggai’s brilliant silvery white spots and stripes. There several Panda Banggai cardinalfish which were spotted in a particular batch of captive bred from Indonesia and imported by Tropical Marine Centre. It is still unknown if this is a stable mutation or whether the Panda Banggai will be able to be line bred like other designer clownfish but either way, the development of mostly black Panda Banggai cardinalfish with screaming silvery-white spots would be an incredible sight to see.

GHL’s Mitrad LED lights get a first hands-on look

The GHL Mitras LED is one of the highly anticipated products of InterZoo 2012 and we’ve finally gotten a good hard, close-up look under the hood of this feature rich LED. Multicolored LEDs are tightly clustered under the heatsink of the Mitras LED with four cooling fans blowing air across the topside heatsink. Some of the GHL MItras’s LEDs are riding bareback, others have a common reflector a-la Radion and a cluster lens is also expected to be developed in the future. Details of the GHL Mitras are already well covered and smothered but follow the break to see how the Mitras is put together.

Illuminata LED is the smallest little multicolored light from Vertex

The Illuminata LED from Vertex packs perhaps the most lighting power in the smalest package of any light we’ve seen at InterZoo 2012 so far. Measuring roughly at a meager four by six inches and a half inch thick, the Vertex Illuminata packs no fewer than 17 LEDs in seven colors. Blue, Royal blue, red, green, warm white and two shades of indigo/near UV are all represented in the Vertex Illuminata LED. The exact output of the Vertex Illuminata has still not yet been settled on but two tiny fans help to cool this hot little number to a non-scalding level.

The neatest trick of the Illuminata LED is its combination ball joint and side-tank mount which is also designed to transfer power through the ball joint! Pretty neat huh? Like many other products of InterZoo 2012 these two little Illuminata LEDs are the only one sin existence, hand painted and made ready just in time for the show so release dates, pricing and actual specifications could vary quite a lot by the time Vertex takes them out of the R&D oven.

The Fluval Sea PS1 is not just a decent internal protein skimmer, but a sure fire signal from Hagen that is is very serious about making a real push into the marine aquarium market. In addition to the Fluval Sea Salt, Fluval Sea circulation and Fluval Sea recirculation pumps, the Fluval Sea PS1 adds to Fluval’s arsenal of high value and very usable equipment for a marine aquarium.

The internally mounted Fluval Sea PS1 protein skimmer is mounted with suction cups (we know, you’d prefer magnets) and the injection molded body should help to keep the price very affordable. We don’t yet know exact US retail pricing yet but the multi-bladed impeller and overall function of the Fluval Sea PS1 definitely bears some hallmarks of the Hydor Slim Skim and the Areo pump made by hydor.

The aCone skimmers 1.5 and aCone 3.0 are the first conical skimmers from AquaMedic with high air intake and low power consumption. The AquaMedic aCone skimmers use the also-new EcoRunner water pumps with a well designed air and water intake that really helps to reduce the potential clogging of the water pump. Although almost every large needle wheel skimmer and especially cone skimmers use some kind of bubble diffuser with a perforated plate, the AquaMedic aCone uses a series of three baffles to achieve a similar effect

The aCone 1.5 cone skimmer is rated for 1,500 liter aquariums using an EcoRunner 3700 drawing 37 watts of power and an air intake of 1,200 lph. The aCone 3.0 cone skimmer is rated for 2,500 liter aquariums using an EcoRunner 6000 drawing 54 watts of power and an air intake of 2,500 lph. If all goes well we might see the aCone skimmers in the US towards the end of the year although they are available in Europe now for 479 Euro for the aCone 1.5 and 899 Euro for the aCone 3.0.

The Teco R290 Eco-Friendly Chiller is a new water cooling device from the master chiller builders at Teco. It is well known that most chiller refrigerants are not exactly soft on the environment, and this especially applies to the commonly used R134A refrigeration gas. By contrast, the R290 refrigerant used in Teco’s new Eco-Friendly water chiller has much less impact on the environment than other refrigerants. The Teco R290 Eco-Friendly Chiller shown here at InterZoo is a prototype that is in development and they are working to use high efficiency parts in all aspects of the chiller and we hope to hear more from the “Teco Eco” soon.
