Hey guys,
I recently purchased a second hand fish tank, scored the live rock as well as the water. I have been cycling the tank now just under 4 weeks and have noticed something cleared some sand away from beneath a rock. I spied on the tank using a red light (Infrared) and it seems I have a small mantis shrimp. It seems very small, and I dont think it will get much bigger than what it is now, as the guy I bought the tank from, has had the tank for 2 years already. I mentioned to him what I found, and he was not aware.
Do you think this is something to worry about? I have a snail as well, which seemed to catch a ride with the rock and is still going fine.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Justin

Hey guys,
I recently purchased a second hand Boyo TL 550. Most of the equipment is standard, as well as some additional equipment.
I scored the live rock as well as water from the guy. I threw the subtrate away as it was crushed coral and replaced it with play sand which I washed and washed and washed.
It is now the second week of me running the rank, with nothing inside, other than the snail I scored from the rock.
I have done one water change, 10% as well as rinsed off the filter media.
I have just done a water test and am wondering where my tank is within a cycle, if any and whether it is safe to start adding my CUC?
Parameters are as follows (Tested with a Tropic Marine test kit):
Temp: 25.6 Degrees Celcius
PH: 8.4
Nitrate: 15 ppm or mg/l
Nitrite: 0.02 ppm or mg/l
Ammonium: 0 ppm or mg/l
Salinity: 1.020
How am I looking?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys,
I have a boyu 550 TL and was wondering how much water flow I require.
I bought the tank second hand, it has two internal pumps, which I have in the last chamber of the sump, the one is a Boyu standard 720 Litre/Hour pump, and I am not sure what the second one is.
I also have two SEIO 320 props in the display tank which are both rated at 1200 Litre/Hour.
Is this sufficient, too much, or too little.
Any advice be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Justin

Hi guys,
Not sure if this has alraedy been asked, but I was wondering about the storage of salt water or RO water.
I like to buy my water from a LFS and sometimes I dont use all of it, especially if it is a top up,. I like to buy a standard of 25 litres per week and if I am only toppnig up 15 litres after a water change, how long can I store the remaining water for and what conditions should it be stored in? Out of light? direct sun etc?
If this is possible, I would then like to store RO water as well, to assist with day to day top ups if need be.
Will the stored water eventually develop a bactria that could affect my water parameters?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Justin

Hi guys,
I recently bought a second hand Boyu 550 TL tank. I have successfully moved it to my place and have it running. I noticed that the hood of the tank is loose once lifted for maintenance. I am not sure if the tank "clips" onto the frame of the tank housing?
Also, one of the arms that you use to hold the hood up whilst doing maintennce has a little piece missing on it, which makes the hood terribly unstable if not properlty secured.
Does anyone know of a place that sells spare parts for this tank, I would like to replace the arms and hopefully any missing clip that is causing the hood to be unstable.
Any input woulf greatly be appreciated.
Thanks,
Justin

Hey guys,
I am finally happy to announce that I am a newbie to the aquarium world. More specifically to the salt water world.
I have tried the fresh water tank hobby out before, when I was very young, and it ended in a disaster, purely because of lack of understanding and knowledge, not cycling the tank and just loading it with as many goldfish I could afford with my pocket money at the time. After burning my fingers from that, I have steered CLEAR of keeping fishtanks for many years. The bug has bitten again, I am older, eager and fortunately, have the Internet to do the many months of research I have been doing to finally be compfortable in this new attempt.
I have managed to find a second hand Boyu TL 550 tank for a really good price of R2500. The guy I am buying it from has upgraded to a red sea 250 and is keeping his fish, but has been kind enough to give me his water and live rock, which is covered in purple algae, which I heard is excellent. The migration begins this coming Saturday. I have found a nice place that sells water containers (Mr Plastic fourways) sells some nice buckets, like paint buckets, which I am going to use to move the live rock. They also have 25L containers with screw on lids, which I will use to transport as much of the water as possible.
I have arranged to buy the remaining water to fill the tank from the local pet shop. I think because I am basically losing 50% of the original water, I will leave the tank to cycle for a few weeks before I start adding the cleaning crew to the tank.
I spend a good hour or so talking to a very helpful guy at WILD ON PETS in greenstons yesterday, he gave me a good idea which fish I am allowed to have in my tank, which corals are easy for me to start off with and basically what I will need to maintain the tank. I really appreciated his input and he answered all the questions I have been dying to ask.
So.... what I PLAN on doing is setting up the rocks to look like a shelf of a reef... put some nice tube worms in the gaps, some nice soft corals... anemonie perhaps... maybe 2 clown fish, blue manderin... 2 cleaner shrimp and maybe a hermit or two... an Urchin and thats about it... is that too much, or can I possibly add more cleaning crew or corals... I am a little uncomfortbale about the amount of fish I can have, so only working on having 4 - 5 fish MAX.
Am I on the right track with regards to the migration of the tank, cycling and the additions I would like to make to the tank.
I look forward to learning a lot from this community and perhaps one day to contribute as well
:-)
Justin
