Tunze Stream 6105 versus Vortech Mp40w

This debate has probably been done to death already. I'm looking at it from the point of view of battery powered backup though. Does the Vortech have this option? I don't like how much space the Tunze takes up in the tank, but I hear that they're very reliable? -
Autopsy Help Please.

Unfortunately my clown trigger didn't pull through. I wanted to know what led to its lack of appetite and probable starvation, so I thought I'd do an autopsy. I soon found out that I had absolutely no idea what to look for.
I'm hoping that if I'm confronted with this situation again, that I'll be able to approach it with a little more knowledge. Clearly only a vet or someone trained in the field will be able to do a full autopsy, but I'm hoping that someone can give us some pointers on basic, common ailments that we could look for.
The fish was fine 2 weeks ago, other than what I thought was a mild infestation of flukes. It then spent more and more time in hiding, and not feeding with the other fish. Notice the lesion on the second white circle behind the pectoral fin.

Looks normal to me, but I'm clueless.
The stomach contents including some spinach which was fed about 48hrs prior to it's death, the mush is probably bloodworm. There's a fair amount of sand in the contents too?
This irritation on the gills looks problematic? -
Clown Trigger's favourite Food??

Hi peeps...
My clown trigger's in trouble. It's been hiding more and more of late, and when I saw it yesterday, I was shocked to see that it's just skin and bones. It hasn't been eating anything, but yesterday I managed to entice it to eat some bloodworm.
Does anyone have a clown trigger, and if so, what is it's favourite food? Want to see if I can't get mine to eat again. -

Here are some pictures of TT, a Balistoides iridescens. I'll be documenting the changes that it goes through towards adulthood.
It's not for the average home aquarium, as it requires a 2500l tank min. This fish will be donated to the local aquarium when it becomes too large, unless I've built a big enough one myself by then.

Hi EL guys and gals. The PE bunch of puddlehoppers have showed us up a little by organising some great fish collecting outings. It's time that we start doing the same while the season is still upon us. We could organise safe excursions to the Westbank, Cove Rock, Bats Cave etc. We could also do day trips to some of the coastal spots.
All would be welcome, even if you've never caught a fish in your life before. Who's keen??? -
Clean your protein skimmer's neck!

I just thought I'd post this reminder, more for the new guys really, as I don't think that I've ever seen it mentioned before.
The gunk that collects agaist the sides of your skimmer neck must be cleaned as soon as it starts to become visible. If not, ammonification will begin there and ammonia will return into the water column with water running down the inside of the skimmer neck. This obviously applies to the gunk on the lid as well.

Piano blenny vampire action?

I'd love to keep a piano blenny! They're quite prolific down here as well. My question is, how much damage can they really do to other fish? Surely they're not gonna take chunks out of the side of my fish? Would the small wounds that it inflicts get infected? Or will it just keep nailing the same spot until serious injury results?
Bear in mind that the smallest fish I have is a pair of 8cm squirrel fish. -

Has anyone ever kept this lined bubble shell or rose petal bubble shell?
They feed on burrowing polychaete worms, so should survive in my sump if there is enough food for it. I wonder how much food it requires? -

Feel free to bring a water sample so that we can compare parameters, as once the coral is in your possession, I can obviously not refund your money should the coral perish. Familiarise yourself with the correct way of acclimatising corals, as my way is unconventional, and I will not recommend it.

The Emperors New Clothes

I can't find the original thread of when my mate Ian and I caught this Emperor angel, but it's now starting to change into its sub-adult colouration. I thought I'd update this thread with changes as they happen. It's quite fascinating to watch really. Does anyone know why they change so dramatically, whereas some fish stay the same throughout their lives?

Increasing Water Volume.

The fish in my 1.5mx65cmx65cm tank are starting to reach adult size and are thereefore putting quite a burden on the biological filtration, with phosphate level shooting up to 0.25ppm. I've decided to plumb a Jo-Jo Slimline 750l tank into the system, to increase the water volume. It should roughly double it.
My question is, should I add sand into the bottom to increase DSB area or should I keep it bare for easy maintenance? Also, is this enough of an addition to make a difference?
Any other advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -
Fish catches in the Eastern Cape 2011/2012

The conditions were pretty bleak this weekend, with massive swell and resultant murky water, but it's no longer as cold as it's been. There have been rumours of fish being caught already? There are tons of pelagic fry in all of the rock pools, but I haven't seen anything else, not even Anthias.
Sooo... who's seen what? Or what are you hoping to catch this season? -

Another worm. There are many different species in your DSB.
Copepod
Bubbles making their way up through the DSB. It could be either oxygen or nitrogen. At first I thought nitrogen, but then realised that it wasn't a totally anaerobic zone, as there is algae growing up against the glass. Any thoughts?

Here are some photos of various corals etc. Just a warning to those thinking of getting into the world of macro.... it's totally addicitive, and will flatten you bank balance faster than starting a marine tank!

Wood Polyp. That's what I know them as. Feel free to correct the names.
Pin cusion polyps. You can see the tiny tentacles, which are not easily visible to the naked eye, at the end of the stalks.

I don't know if these are stunted brown star polyps, or a small species on their own? They've been this size (2mm high) for several years now.

Glen Eden..... BEWARE!!!!

For all of the guys enjoying the late season that seems to be starting in the Eastern Cape, I have a word of warning. My GF and I parked at the main car park at Glen Eden on Saturday late afternoon and had a very short (10min) walk on the beach. Upon returning to my car, burglars had somehow gained entry to my car and stolen my camera and lenses and her phone, cash,card and glasses. Quick and slick! Worst of all, the insurance is not honouring my claim for the camera, as there is no sign of forced entry:(.
I've since discovered that it is a frequent and ongoing problem at Glen Eden. I would however be very wary of parking anywhere these days. It seems that the authorities are unable to control these sort of problems anymore. -

These nudibranches are commonly seen feeding on algae at Nahoon reef. This one was about 25cm long! It should be able to sort out the algae in an average 6ft tank in about a day or so. Maybe we should have one per city, and pass it from reefer to reefer?:lol:
