  My RBTA Split!!!

  Over the last 2 days my nennie decided to start walking around. It also didnt look to great. So i was wondering why...
  
  Last night after looking closely i spotted another nennie. Sooo.... My nennie split.
  
  They both looked very healthy last night.
  
  My question is when do i start feeding again?

  Advice Needed

  Hi Brenda
  
  I was wondering if you could give me a few pointers in helping a nennie recover. I have a feeling its a RBTA or some other BTA.
  
  The Nennie was in a friends tank and the tank took a turn for the worst. The nennie seems to be bleached. I've been nursing it and its looking alot better. Extending at times and eating well. Used to be a nice Reddish now its pink tips.
  
  I've been feeding the nennie ocean nutrition lance fish every 3 days.
  
  The nennie is under 1 x 54w T5 and 2 x 39w T5's.
  
  Any suggestions to try recover the nennie?

  Pin Cushions problems

  Hi All
  
  I got this pin cushion from my brother to keep till he sorts his tank out.
  
  However the pin cushion has fallen over and the bottom seems to be dead. I would like to cut it just below the "dead" part and attach it to the plug again.
  
  What would be the best way to do this?

  Skimmer on / off

  Hi All
  
  Just wondering...
  
  I'm dosing MB7 at the moment and i always switch the skimmer off for 4 hours. Which is recommended.
  
  Then i dose a carbon source daily. My question here is should i switch my skimmer off for dosing. And also for how long?
  
  Another question is should i be running an airstone to combat the PH swing? If so for how long should i leave the skimmer off for? I havent yet tested to see if there is a PH swing but alot of people say there might be one.
  
  I just need to fetch my ph pen then i can test this.

  Understanding what i did?!?!

  So this weekend i decided to do some maintainance on my tank.
  
  I've been trying to get my tank into decent condition without having to do much.
  
  So this weekend my tank was looking worse for wear. Very mirky water and nothing was clean. I did a water change last weekend to see if it can help and that did nothing.
  
  So this weekend i did the following and my water is CRYSTAL Clear! Now the problem is what did i do right? and will it work in future?
  
  This is what i did
  
  Cleaned out my skimmer. Left if off for 4 hours for the MB7 to settle.
  Put a pump in the first and last chamber to blow up the detritus.
  Added a bag of carbon.
  Added 2 caps of Microbacter 7.
  
  I have a funny feeling that the MB7 might have sorted my problem out. I know carbon also helps with this but the carbon hasnt really been helping. Also if i dosed 2 caps of MB7 yesterday do i wait 2 weeks to dose again or do i keep dosing every day? I understand the concept of dosing to reduce phos and nitrates but will i need a carbon source all the time?
  
  My next question is what will happen if i dose MB7 without dosing a carbon source? Is there something that i can watch for until such time that i need to start dosing carbon? I dont want to dose both until such some that i understand what worked so well to make my tank all of a sudden sparkle.
  
  I will try do tests to see where i'm going with this.

  Tank Design : 120 x 60 x 50

  Okay so i've decided to design a new tank. Been waiting for this for some time.
  
  This is my planned size.
  
  Tank
  120(L) x 60(W) 50(H)
  Water will be at 48.
  I'm thinking of going rimless with this tank. Probably 12mm to be safe.
  3 panes being starphire.
  Skinny overflow.
  Still wondering how i should do the return so that i dont have water running back into the sump.
  
  Sump
  
  I will use my current tank as my sump.
  120(L) x 45(W) x 45(H)
  I will start posting pics of what i think the sump will look like.
  I want to have a DSB with LR on top and some sort of frag section. Still wondering if its worth using DSB or going with bacteria and vodka dosing.
  Reef Octopus 100 Int Skimmer
  Phos Reactor + Carbon Reactor
  
  Lighting
  
  I'm still pondering on this depending on lighting.
  
  probably 2 x 150W MH and 2 x actinics

  Spare Holding tank in the West Rand

  Hi All
  
  I'm currently in the process of planning and building my new tank. I should be starting next month. I have been lucky with my corals being kept by Adee. Thanks for this bud! I however need someone to look after my fish for about 2 months or so.
  
  I currently need to cook my LR and make sure all the algae is gone and in the same time design a tank and build it. Currently the fish are in my old tank and i've reduced the lighting to 3 hours to see if this helps slow the growth of the algae down.
  
  Currently i have the following fish.
  
  Regal Tang
  Naso Tang
  Sailfin Tang
  Convict Tang
  3 x Clowns
  2 x Anthias
  2 x Gobies
  2 x Wrasse
  
  I also have 5 Inverts + other starfish.
  
  Red Starfish
  1 x Multicolour Urchin
  2 x Cleaner Shrimp
  1 x Coral Banded Shrimp (HUGE)
  
  Just remember that i wouldnt need to remove this fish. So a tank that has corals is probably not a good idea.
  
  I will supply food and salt if needed and anything else.

  Urchin not looking healthy

  So i got an urchin the other day.
  
  I dont have a picture of it but i can explain what he looks like.
  
  green / purple with short white spines.
  
  He looks like a collector urchin.
  
  He was motoring around the tank nicely all over till yesterday. Where he started loosing his spines. I know this is not a good sign.
  
  He still has some of his spines left. And i can see them move so looks like he's still alive. But he's not moving.
  
  My first question is what would he eat? I know most of them eat algae, nori and coralline.
  
  The second question is how do i know he's dead and do urchins contaminate tanks and release toxin's into the water?

  Okay so since i've been having all sorts of fun with my tank eg. Endless Nightmare!!! Not with livestock but mainly with algae i decided to post my Parameters i measured tonght with my test kit.
  
  One thing... My test kit is a little old ( I know what you going to say.... I'm not goint to trust it ) But its been giving me decent results so far.
  
  Ammonia : 0.1mg/l
  Nirtite : 0.02 mg/l
  Nitrate : 10 mg/l
  PH: 8.2
  Alk : 7 dKh
  
  So i know where my problem is i think...
  
  But where do i find the source?
  
  Suggestions?

  Substrate causing problem?

  Hi all
  
  Okay so i thought about this long and hard.
  
  I have been struggling with a GHA problem for far too long now.
  
  I have done everything. From cooking rocks to changing lights to almost everything.
  
  My last resort is to remove the substrate.
  
  I have sugar fine crushed coral. Which i feel is fueling my GHA.
  
  The reason i say this is because when i agitate the substrate there is HUGE dust storms that occur.
  
  I started yesterday by removing some of the substrate and i'm going to continue to remove it until its all gone. I have also added a huge skimmer rated for double my systems volume.
  
  I will run bare bottom until i can see a change in the rocks and the GHA. Hopefully this will start going away and i can continue with a better reefing journey. I can then also start updating my thread.
  
  I am also moving rocks to the sump and "cooking" them there with no light etc and that should help alot. I will rotate the rocks slowly and see if this solves my problem also.
  
  Will keep you updated.

  I would just like to know if anyone knows where the bubbles should go up to. would is be above the ring where the cup is attached? Would it be at the bottom of the cup?
  
  Please let me know anyone knows?
  
  Also the skimmer has been running for about 6 Hours and still no skim mate.
  
  Will see tomorrow morning.

  Wiseman Klein TDS Meter

  Hi All
  
  Just thought i would show you this nifty TDS Meter then tell you a little story.
  
  
  
  Okay so Thanks to Marco from TheWaterBoy. Always great service and speedy!!!
  
  So i was always worried about my TDS of my RO Unit. Also not knowing when to change my cartridges and if my TDS was causing my algae.
  
  So what i did was install the new flush valve for my RO unit which didnt have a DI unit.
  
  I then tested the TDS of the outlet and it was 64!!!!
  
  I then flushed the for about 2 minutes. I then checked again and it was at 32!!!
  
  I was getting somewhere. I then flushed it a few more times after that and it was dropping 20, 16, 13, 4 and then finally 2. Just to let you know this didnt have a DI Unit yet. I did purchase one which i will install tonight.
  
  I cant belive how much of a difference the flush valve makes to the unit.
  
  VERY CHUFFED!!!
