Hi All
We are preparing to reopen the Aquarium section at Bayworld in December and looking for photos of species of Tropical Vagrants that we are likely to collect and display from the Transkei. If you have good photos of commonly caught juvenile tropicals that you would be happy for us to use please let me know.
Surgeons, Wrasse, Damsels, Angels, Butterflies, Goldies, Cardinals, Sharpnose puffers/tobies (canthigasters), etc. If we decide to use your photo we would obviously acknowledge the photo as yours.

Womens Day Celebration
In celebration of Womens Day on 09 August 2011, all women will be able to visit Bayworld free of charge. (Men and children pay normal fee)
View a variety of Eastern Cape reptiles while strolling through the Snake Park, embark on an exciting journey through time in the Museum. See the latest exhibition on children prams and the robotic dinosaurs in the Dinosaur Park which is extended by popular demand. Bayworld AUTUMN Special
BAYWORLD invites all residents of Nelson Mandela Bay to participate in a SPECIAL FAMILY EVENT over the upcoming long weekend, 20 -21 March 2011.
Reduced admission for adults, R20 (half price) and children FREE accompanied by a paying adult.
The programme for the day includes activities not routinely available to the public, such as crocodile feedings, behind the scenes visits at the Snake Park, a penguin experience, shark and tropical fish feeding, viewing of museum collection stores and heritage treasure hunts in the museum. Other activities for the children include face painting and a jumping castle.
Visitors will still enjoy the daily scheduled seal and penguin presentations at the Oceanarium, as well as viewing the impressive collection of fish in the Aquarium. The variety of Eastern Cape reptiles in the Snake Park alongside the popular dinosaur display is a great family experience as well as the journey down memory lane thorough in the Museum.
Bella Bay Café also invites families to a tasty break between activities. The stunning First People Artists exhibition comprising beautifully crafted quilts, featuring San mythologies has been extended into April due to popular demand.
The complex opens at 09:00 and closes at 16:30 .

The Story of Stuff (Green Evening)

The Story of Stuff evening at BayworldThe fifth in a series of events entitled The World in the Bay will take place on Friday, 10 December 2010 at Bayworld and will focus on Going Green.
A highlight of the programme will be a 20 minute video The Story of Stuff which illustrates where stuff comes from and what happens to it when we discard it. There will be short presentations on recycling, biodegradable food products and sea life in trouble.
The winners of the schools recycling competition which was organized by The Waste Trade Company will be announced. Competition entries will be displayed during the Green Event, The learner with the winning entry will receive a voucher to be Trainer for a Day at the Oceanarium, and runners-up will each receive a Friends of Bayworld voucher.
The rest of the evening will be open, allowing visitors to view the exhibitions, purchase refreshments (in biodegradable or recyclable containers), and mingle with fellow growing green minds. Various exhibitors will display aspects of mankinds impact on the environment, and environmentally friendly practices such as worm farming and organic gardening.
Exhibitors taking part in the evening include the Nelson Mandela Bay Transition Network, Green Home, The Waste Trade Company, Waste Exchange System, Urban Harvest Edible Gardens, and many more. If your company/organisation is interested in exhibiting, please contact Michelle du Toit at mdutoit@bayworld.co.za.
The event will take place in the Marine Hall of the PE Museum at Bayworld at 18:00 till 21:00. Members of the public are invited to attend free of charge. Refreshments will be on sale. -
Beach Clean Up

Beach Clean Up
International Beach Clean up will take place on 18th September 2010 which is an annually event held every third Saturday of September each year.
Bayworld together with Sappi (Adamis Mill) will be hosting the clean up effort at Pollock Beach, Port Elizabeth and encourage the public to join us at 09:00am. Dirt bags will be provided.
Sappi will be sponsoring a group of children form SOS Childrens Village, a group of PROTEC students, and a mathematics, Science and Technology intervention programme from grade 10 to 12 learners.
Join in this important conservation exercise during Tourism month.
While you are in the area pay a visit to Bayworld be a tourist in your own City.
Bayworld opens at 09:00 and closes at 16:30. Seal and penguin presentations are at 11:00 and 15:00 daily and be amazed at the exciting animatronics Dinosaur display.

Please could you promote the following to anyone interested in the environment, research, museums and herpetology in particular?
Bayworld will be actively promoting the work that is done here with interesting activities on Sunday 19th September and on the Friday public holiday on 24th September. They will be great opportunities to share the excitement of the Museum with children, grandchildren and friends and to support the Museum. There is a special evening lecture on Monday 20th September. Details will be available in the newspaper closer to the time.
To promote the work done by the herpetologists the following lectures will give participants an insight into some of the field trips undertaken to remote areas in search of new and exciting discoveries.

He has published numerous scientific and popular books and articles including his widely used Field guide to snakes and other reptiles of southern Africa. 12.00In Search of Lost Frog Species, illustrated presentation on a Frog Collection Expedition in Hogsback by Werner Conradie.
In the month of September and October Conservation International (a world organization that works to ensure a healthy and productive planet for us all) is sending researchers across the world in an unprecedented search to rediscover species of lost amphibians - animals considered potentially extinct but that may be holding on in a few remote places. It is the ultimate Search for the Lost Frogs. Port Elizabeth Museum Natural Scientist, Werner Conradie, will lead a local team of researchers into the Amotala Mountains in search of the critically endangered Amatola Toad, last seen in 1998. Frogs play a key role in ecosystem and keeps it healthy. Will he be successful in finding this frog? What else will they find? Join us at Bayworld on 24 September at 12:00 noon, for an up to date illustrated report on this exercise and hear about what is happening in the ever shrinking environments of amphibians of the world.

Public Lecture New Places & New Species by Prof Bill Branch Herpetologist
Finding and naming new species is a Scientist's dream. During the last 10 years, on explorations in the mountains of Mozambique and the rocky deserts of Namibia and Angola, Bill Branch has discovered over 20 new species of snakes, tortoises, chameleons and geckos. He shares the excitement of these discoveries, the new techniques used to identify new species, and the intricacies of naming them.
I hope that you can attend these activities and lectures with your families and friends. Bayworld needs all the support it can get.

Cyclop-eeze feeding quantities for Banggais

We (my youngest son Rogan and I) caught out 24 baby banggais and put them in a breeding net on Friday night, the seahorses might have eaten others. On Saturday morning I found the long spined urchins had tipped the net. I managed to find 23 and Rogan put them in a tank with an airpipe and heater. He lost two on the first day but the others seem fine:thumbup:. Normally we leave them in the sump but this time Rogan wants to keep them in a separate tank as we have lost some in the sump previously with sudden fright syndrome. We are feeding a pinch of cyclop-eeze premixed in tank water in a tot glass and poured into the tank four or five times a day and doing daily 50% water changes with the main tank water. We also manually splash the glass at the surface gently between feeds to wash off cyclop-eeze into the water. Are there any references on what quantities to use?
I checked the cyclop-eeze website already but there is no suitable info there, I did see that you must keep it in the dark in the fridge or freezer after opening though. -
