Avaaz - 24 hours to Save our Oceans
In 24 hours, Australia could save one million square kms of ocean forever -- setting up the largest marine reserve in the world and preserving thousands of delicate species. But they will need a global outcry to beat out commercial fishing and mining companies hoping to destroy the plan.
The Australian government is holding a public consultation, hoping it will give them a mandate to take a big step towards a sustainable future for our oceans and our planet. But the reserve will cost money and
without massive support right now, the short term financial interests of industry could beat out our hopes for a safe future for our seas.
The consultation closes Friday in Australia --

So the move to the new house went well, and the only unfortunate loss was a Fairy Wrasse...
At the new house there are three 3m x 6m sheds. One of the sheds is positioned so that it gets full sun the whole day. Id like to explore the option of turning it into a Coral Room, by replacing the corrugated sheets with Polycarb sheets. Id like to have a few large shallow runs where I can grow soft corals and LPS. Im still not 100% sure exactly which corals I want to grow, but I would like to grow a variety of Leathers, Mushrooms and Florida Rics. The coral room will also house my RO unit, mixing station etc, as well as a QT setup or two.
Id need to explore options to keep the temp stable. Im thinking if I replace the roof with the polycarb sheets (clear) and then cover the shed with a blue shadecloth, it would already make a significant difference to keep the temp cooler.
Id like to get some advice from guys whove had/do have a successful coral room/greenhouse.

I'm moving at the end of October and need the following:
1 x 4-foot Tank (It will be used as a temp setup and then be converted to a sump with dsb)
2 or 4 250l Plastic drums (To move the water, then I'll use them to mix salt water)

I've been dreading this since the day I went to collect my new setup in Pietersburg and cart it all to Pretoria. I'm moving at the end of July (only about 6km or so from where I'm staying now), and need some advice on my ideas below. When I bought the setup there was no livestock to worry about (other than tons of liverock, hermits, zoas a Mantis and a Pistol shrimp). It's a 6-foot 10mm on cabinet, with 250kg liverock and almost 300kg sand.
Here's my idea:
Empty all the water into 200l containers.
Pack liverock and corals into large cooler boxes with heater and airstone.
Keep fish in a 100l plastic container with heater and airstone.
Pack all equipment into boxes.
Get the moving guys to load everything and deliver to the new house, and start setting it up again.
This all sounds simple, but I'm very concerned about "dismantling" the whole system. I have an in tank DSB that consists of just under 300kg fine sand. Firstly to remove it will be a mess, and I know disturbing a DSB of any sort is not a good thing and will cause my tank to go into cycle mode again.
My main concern is the fish and corals. Would it be better for me to rather sell them and then "start from scratch", or do i stand a fair chance in setting up at the new house and a reasonable expectation things will be ok? If I sell the fish I should get what I paid for them, and possibly same for the corals, but I am thinking of keeping the corals in my nano if needs be.
I do have a Bouyo TL550 (130l) that is "easyish" to move without disturbing the sand.
I'm going to take this opportunity now to get a 4-foot sump - so anyone have a bargain please let me know ;)

Hi everyone,
For the past few weeks I've been helping friends setup their new tank (a nice big 5-foot one). They bought some mushrooms today, on what they thought was a piece of rock. However, the rock opened a short while after it was put in their tank to what seems to be a clam of sorts.
Below is the best pic I can get of it. I would appreciate any help and advice as to the ID of the clam, and to find out it's requirements. It has no color mantle, so I'm not sure if it's too late already or is there a chance of it surviving? Their tank has been setup only about 4 weeks or so ago, so still busy cycling. If need be I don't mind putting it in my tank that's 6+ months old, but don't want to risk putting a "half dead" anything in there.
I haven't seen it in person, I can only get there over the weekend.

I finally found a BTA yesterday! The guy at the LFS said it's a "Purple Tip Bubble Anemone" - I'm not able to find any info on it though, and have only heard about a RBTA and GBTA. This ons is al olive green/light brown, with very light (almost fluorescent) bulbs, with a bright pink dot on the tip. Amazing how the tentacles change according to day/night. He's has moved to under a ledge where I guess he'll be for a while until he finds a spot he likes.
I read on another forum that anemones settle in better when they have a clown to host, I'm assuming it's because of the feeding or simply he'll feel more "at home" with natural things happening around him?
I want to get a clownfish today, and read that in nature the Maroon and Tomato clowns are most often found with the BTA's. Can I keep two of either Maroon or Tomato clowns? Which clowns would be the better option and why?

I'd like to know the proper way to dispose of old T5/Fluorescent tubes? Was thinking Builder's or other hardware store would have an option? What do you guys do with your old tubes?

Hi everyone, I notice during the last week or so my skimmer (Aqua Excel with Hailea pump) stops making bubbles. First thing that came to mind was saltscreep maybe blocking the silencer, so I took it off and still no bubbles. I removed the airline tubing and blew into it to clear. Made bubble for a few days then stopped again.
I'm thinking I should take the skimmer out today and give it a decent clean, just want to check if any of you have had a similar thing happen and what's the best solution?

Various frags for saleCommon Names: Green & Maroon/Purple Zoa's
Scientific Names: -
Size of frags Varies. Have frags that range in size from single polyp to 15+ polyps
How long have you had the frags? 1 week to 1 month
Are the frags mounted? Yes
Shipping or Collection only: Preferably collection, will ship at buyer's cost.
Your location. Centurion
Price: Swop out only
Photo's: I have some zoa frags available that I'd like to swop for other colors of zoa's and some softies. The frags range in size from tiny (ie one polyp) to large (15+ polyps). I would prefer to swop the smaller frags for other zoas, and the larger frags for softies. I fragged these a bit more than a week ago, and they're all opened up and attached to either a frag plug or small rock.
I already have the following, so won't be interested at this stage in getting more: Kenya Tree, Toadstool Leather, Xenia, brown zoas, brown/green zoas, purply hairy mushroom, striped green mushroom and maroon mushroom.
I am especially interested in: other colorful zoas (ie red, pink, orange, yellow, blue, etc.), mushrooms (that are attached to something), various softies that I don't have yet and maybe hammerhead, torch or frogspawn frags.
What the frags look like in my Boyuo (Equal blue & white lights). This is what they look like under sun light as well.

From the same colony, but under different lighting (mainly white tubes).

Hi everyone,
I'd like to find out what the best options are wrt fragging my zoa's. My main objective is to swop them with other reefers for colourful zoa's and other softies (frags, of course). I'm planning on making frags of 2 or 3 polyps each, attached to a cement frag plug (properly cured, etc.). I'll then wait until the frags have grown a new polyp before swopping them. I am new to fragging, so I'd like to hear if this sounds ok or if I should rather do it differently?

Hi everyone and Merry Christmas!
I got back from a little over a week's holiday. My tank was fine, except for the glass being a bit covered in algae. I cleaned it today.
I noticed my Cladiella missing. The person who looked after my tank said he noticed it missing yesterday morning. I thought nothing of it, maybe it just came loose or something. however, i couldn't find it anywhere in the tank.
A few minutes ago I found two Nudi's (I managed to ID them as Tritoniopsis elegans, thanks to the
The Sea Slug Forum - Tritoniopsis elegans ).
From what I've been able to Google, practically all advice it to remove it. I really don't want to kill things, but if it's going to be eating my softies, it should rather go. What would be the best way to get rid of it?

Hi there,
I'm in need of two new (or good secondhand) tyres for my smart car. Apart from the fact that they are made only by Continental (who has no stock or production date), they are an odd size so the usual HiQ, TwT, Supaquick, etc. don't stock them.
My best bet would probably be to buy the wheels of an accident damaged car - but I have no idea where smart cars go when they're written off :) Wannenburg has no idea.
Hopefully someone here on the forums is either in the industry or has a contact?

Hi there, I'd like to know if here's anybody that maybe has a local KZN/Tk Convict Tang and "Klipvissie" that needs a new home? Please let me know - preferably in Gauteng somewhere

Hi everyone,
A few weeks ago I noticed a small amount of Bryopsis growing on a piece of rock in my tank. I did not think much of it, as I had the same happen in my Nano a while ago, but the Urchin took care of it. The bryopsis has now spread to about 5 rocks where it's growing in small clumps.
I introduced the Urchin to the tank about two or three weeks ago, but he doesn't seem to eat it this time. As is usual the hermit, snails, etc. are also not touching the stuff.
I'd like to introduce a herbivore to eat it, and have so far read that fish most likely (but not guaranteed) to eat it are Scopas Tang, Naso Tang, Bi-color blenny and Lawnmower blenny. Anyone have luck with something eating bryopsis?
My only other options are to increase the pH (I read to 8.5?)or increase Magnesium. I'd prefer to rather add a herbivore instead of fiddling with the water chemistry. I don't want to explore the harsher options (like freezing the rock, boiling it, etc.).
Any advice?

Hi everyone,
I saw a RO unit on an online auction, and asked the seller "What is the TDS of the RO water this unit produces?".
He replied: "It is usually 0 but it depends on the source of the incoming water, because some areas the water is worst off that other places."
This doesn't make any sense to me, as the whole point of using the RO unit is to get the water clean. Would it mean with his units one would have to run it through the RO unit more than once?

I've been researching quite a bit as to which corals to add to my 6-ft tank, and have come up with the following list (Softies, LPS and some SPS). If anyone has frags of these, please let me know (either freebies for a noob :) or very inexpensive). Small frags will be perfect ;)
Soft Corals:
Zoa's & Paly's (small frags with even just or or two polyps will do)
Cabbage Leather
Chilli Coral
Colt Coral
Finger Leather
Ricordea & Yuma
Star Polyps (Green and Blue)
Mushrooms (Normal, Striped, Hairy, etc.)
Kenya Tree
Xenia
Toadstool Leather
LPS:
Blastomussa
Bubble Coral
Candy Cane
Colored Brain
Frogspawn
Meat Coral
Open Brain
Plate Coral
Sun Coral
Torch Coral
Turbinaria
SPS:
Birds Nest
Montipora (Branching & Plating)
Porites
If there is something you have that's also nice and not too specialised, that's not on my list, please let me know.

Hi everyone,
So my 6-ft tank has been cycling for a couple of weeks now, and everything seems to be going ok. However, I would like to add diversity to the in-tank DSB.
Would appreciate if fellow reefers (preferably in the Centurion, Pretoria or Midrand area) can share a cup or so of sand from your healthy and established setup.
Please send me a PM with details where and when I can collect.

Does anybody know where to get eggcrate in Centurion, Midrand or Pretoria?
I've tried the following places:
Builder's Warehouse - Didn't know what is was, also asked for light diffuser, air grate, etc.
Ferreira's Hardware - Also didn't know what it was
Voltex - The guy said I should try an aircon shop, but the aircon people sell prefabricated vents.
Maizey's - Don't stock it.
I eventually found Plasticworld and they sell it (excellent price), but getting there and back is like a 100km round trip (they're in Selby, JHB).
If possible I'd prefer to get black eggcrate, but due to it being so hard to source I'm not picky :)
