Hey everyone.
Can any body tell me what LED i should look out for, (i need a model no. please). I am keen on building my own light setup and want to run the tank as cost effective as possible. so low power lighting is my only option.
the plan is to start with FOWLR. but if its possible to make the lights "reef ready"- then why not ey?

can someone please help me? I'm really struggling to understand about water quality - the most important aspect of this hobby. I'm worried that readings will change drastically and i wont have a clue what to do. does someone have an article i can read that will explain this thoroughly ?
I plan to keep FO but with various beneficial algae and DSB life.
these are the readings I'm asking about.
pH - 8.2 to 8.4
Salinity - 1.023 to 1.026 (or 30.5 to 34.5 Specific Gravity (SG))
Calcium - 380-420
Alkalinity - 6 to 9 dKh (ideally 6.5 to 8.5 dKH) NSW levels
Magnesium - 1300 to 1350
Iodine - 0.04 to 0.06
Strontium - 8ppm or 8mg/l (NSW levels)
Potassium (K+) - 380-420
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - less than 5
Phosphate - less than 0.01
Ammonia - 0 -
LR or DSB

hello, some Q's. would a DSB eventually serve the same purpose or function as live rock, with the surface area and all(as live rock or live sand is used to seed a DSB)?
another Q... i'v read about how important water flow is in your setup, and areas becoming stagnant - but would this "stagnation" be a problem in a DSB.? would this mean i could run a DSB in DT also without an undergravel filter. i understand the importance of having no water flow through your DSB as well as no oxygen in a DSB. -
energy efficient FO setup

hi everyone! lots of random questions. i'm planning to set up my aquarium again and want to do fish only. i chose FO because the price of electricity, running power hungry lights to keep some corals happy etc - the energy consumption of the lights alone is scary. then theres still all the other equipment. electricity wastage is a hot topic in our house.
so my first problem comes in at the lighting - i want a large variety of algae growing in the DT - especially that pink one (coralline algae i think) . does coraline algae have specific lighting requirements like coral does? so i need low wattage lighting. i'm planning to use about 200 blue LEDs for aesthetics and night display.

this site is real cool, but i'm wondering, is there a place where i can get info for beginning an aquarium that is already compiled. as apposed to sifting through tons of threads to get the knowledge i am after? perhaps MASA should make an articles section with articles containing info that is constantly added to. newbees could download these articles, study them and then ask questions. maybe in pdf format...
