i am planning to start carbon dosing, but i neet some help pls, firstly, what would work best, vinegar, vodka or sugar? Iread that vodka causes cyno in some systems, but it's a great source of carbon. On reefcentral i read that people mix 75% vinegar and 25% vodka. Is there anybody that can help me pls with the start-up of carbon dosing, and the effects of it,as i'm currently running a ats, purigen and phosgaurd. thnx:peroni::thumbup::1:

I am looking for a Moorish Idol. I had one about 2years back, before i had a auto top up,and wavemakers. Mine got sucked into a pump because my fish got startled when the return chamber got empty, and the resulting bubbles got into the dt. I would prefer one that is eating,or a local one. The tankmates are non-aggressive tangs, and the tank is relative ok,1800x600x600,i have some sponges as well.

Can anybody pls tell me,why am i struggling to grow a xenia, gsp colony?I am running 2x150w mh's(14k),4x54w T5(2xatinic). I have medium waterflow, waterprams look good,i'm also having phosgaurd and purigen. The current corals are doing well, these are zoa's,2xbubble tips, some brown unknown softies(kinda looks like xenia, but collected it from kzn). Any idea why i'm struggling, coz ultimately i want my rear pane covered with gsp.:yeahdude::whistling::whistling:

I'm looking for some advice,my dt temp is running at about 28degrees,with the heaters lf. How can i bring it safely down to 25,and keeping it constant, without a chiller. My dt is 1800x600x600,i'm also running a small ats,and considered running a small fan over it. Any ideas?

I hope there's someone that can help me. I'm going to the coast in feb (hiberdene then margate) I need to collect some marine grass/plants for my new add on (4ft tank attached to 1.8m dt) The tank will act as a secondary dsb,as well as a future (hopefull) tank for pipefish,so i need some plants/grass that. problem is,i will be staying for about 2 weeks,i cannot take a lot of equipment, and i need to transport it back to gauteng. any idea's?
-
I gave this idea a lot of thought, and decided to do it. I have a 4ft tank, which i want to connect to my main tank and sump. The idea is to use the secondary as a rdsb, and to house ponies, pipefish and a mandarin or 2,in a tank with a low flow, proper sandbed and good lighting. I am not going to add corals in this display, but i'm going to look for eelgrass,or maiden's hair, or basically any type of grass that will fit into the display, with some lr for the mandarin(s)
:void(0)" target="_blank">
This is the tank,in the starting phase. Next to the 4ft,is my main tank,a little understocked as i had a huge setback with lighting and water quality. All of those are sorted now with a new skimmer (Ts2),a lr chamber(also housing a ats), then a small dsb and then the return. any idea's/comments and advise?

Just a quick question, how do i safely increase the flow in my dsb without increasing the return pumps capacity, coz currently i'm running 2*3000l/h pumps=6000l without headloss, how do i calculate that anyway, water being pumped up straight 4 about 1.6m,in a 25mm tube. Any help?pls

just a quick question,i recently started adding iodine 2 my tank. I suspect that i dosed a bit 2 much, coz on the bottle it says 1ml per 100l. I added about 10ml,and now my zoa's r all closed up,as well as my brown starpolyps. Is it maybe because of the iodine, will it pass, and how long about? It's almost a week now.

I am having the following situation. I can get a large lipstick tang 4 free, but it's very aggresive in the current tank ( 4ft). I'm having a 1.8m tank, lots of swimming space and place 4 hiding. The fish in my tank currently is a regal tang,(large), indian sailfin tank(med), african clown(large),pygmy angels(bicolour& coral beauty),cardinals and a lionfish(med). Will the fish's behaviour change if i take it,or will it also kill/attack my fish?

I just wanted to know, who r the regular tidal pool visitors? I've been snorkeling in Port Shepstone tidal pools, and saw big change since i was there,2 years ago. There's a lot of xenia type softies(purple and brown), LPS (or so i suspect) pink, brown, green, seriously,a lot of colours. I didn't remove anything, wanted 2,but didn't. Where else can i find nice tidal pools? I saw some racoon butterflies,lionfish,3 anthias (couldn't believe it).

This is a new project that i want to start, at home i have a pond, outside,it's about 2m*1.5 and is about 900cm deep. if it is worthwile, and possible,i am looking to expand the pond size to 3m*2m*1m(depth will vary from deep to shallow to a small "beach" area. this is my plan
- I rebuild the walls, plaster it and paint it with a suitable rubberising agent
- I dig a suitable hole for a overflow, which will lead to the filter
- Dig another hole for a "wave" effect, a rotating arm with a piston like motion
that will suck, and flush water back into the pond to create that " motion of the
ocean"
- Add a suitable substrate, coastal sand for example
- Build a rocky formation, some overhangs and nice spots for corals
- Add RO water, salt and LR,and leave it to cycle
My main concerns are rapid water evaporations, causing continious fluctuations in the parameters, but to balance it out i'm planning to connect the RO unit permanently, and let it work like a flushbowl. Then heating the water, will the winter have a negative effect, and will a decent chiller help?
I really need some good help and advice before i start the project, but will it be possible to achieve it here in Gauteng?
