Wow guys, I was truely ammazed by the service and handling of livestock at Aquaria. I saw them as a sponser being based in Ballito, I had a meeting planed in Durban, so I phoned as I was looking for cleaner shrimp, and luckely they had a shipment come in the night before.
I left there with a few extra packets I hadn't budgeted for, as I was really impressed with quality and affordability. Lawrence actually did not want me to take the fish yet, as he insisted they still had to stay in qt, but there was no ways I was driving back from Rbay to collect some fish!!!!
Quality of tanks also was amazing, and they are definatly setting the standard for kzn,

I got a real shock with the passing away of Herkie, and a fright as to the dangers we can put ourselves in with reefing, especially electrical, but even to handling zoa's (paly's), foxface's, lions etc, the list can go on
So I just thought if maybe any guru's could share some safety tips, especially with regards to electrical, especially in the sump where most plugs etc are located. -

But whats your favorite bacteria strains? And how have they compared to others?
I am currently dosing stability in a new tank, tommorrow the tank will be two weeks old, but for the last week I have seen one or two tell tale cynao bubbles appear, but no break out of cynao yet, I am happy with it, I havn't tried other brands, but is there anyone who has used it and then found a better, which is your favorite that you have used that beats other brands you have tried.

Hey all,
I had a lakka break for six months, but the evenings are boring without a reef in the house, I do have a bit of adhd, and a tank helps keeps me pour some of my restlessness into.
My original idea for this tank, is not to buy any livestock from an lfs, all must be either tank bred, fragged, or locally caught, or maybe from another reefer. The tank is a bit small for large angels, which for me are reef keeping, however though I wanted a new build, which is easier to maintain also, so thought let me use what I have available. Also I am in two minds of getting butterflies, and also going planted with local macro's, the thing though is some of the flies can get big after a year or two. I might go and dump the flies in Sims or DudleyD's reefs if they get too big;)
Herewith the tank, which is 1200mm (l) x 600mm (w) x 450mm (h), I was painting a blue background.
I painted the stand with about 50 coats of hammerite, and then put pine cupboards on it. I had a big problen in the fact that the tank is 1200mm, and the sump is 1220mm, so the extra 20mm gave me a problem in the spacing for the covering.
Making my diy lighting unit, the lights sit about 60mm from the water, it is open top with euro bracing, but I have a problem with insects flying in at night.
Here is some of the wood I bought, I had a big problem with the pine being warped, any carpenters that saw how I got it to sit flush, would have a fit, basically anywhere it did not sit flush, I ground it down with an angle grinder, that took a minute, then I would sand it for another minute, only 2 minutes and it's sorted!!!!:blush:

Notes:I have two of these reactors, they both sitting so I though I would swop/sell one.

They the reef octopus PHR-140, rated for 3000L, I had some gha, so ran two of these full to the brim in 700L. It comes with a OTP 2000, and some used brightwells Extrax Phos, between 1-3kgs, I ran these reactors for about 3-4 months.
I would prefer to swop this reactor for corals, some nice big frags/colonies, prefrably some nice clams, frogspawns, hammers, torchs, sps, or even some nice big softies, maybe even angels
I am in Durban usually once a week, so don't mind bringing up.
Meks was keen on one of these a while ago, so he might have first dibs if it ends up as a sale, but I would prefer to swop first for corals.
I can show you how to pimp them for saftey from flooding the tank with media, and how to run carbon also above the media.
Too be honest, these are the standerd otp pumps they came with, and I think they not the best, when you close the valve nearly 75% closed, they make a slight bit of noise (on both of them), obviously pressure, however I would actually reckon a smaller 1000lph pump would be better as you only want the media to simmer.
They can be run internally or externally, you may need longer pipes if you want to run it quite far from the sump.

I have had a bad problem with disease/parasites/brooke and the usual unwanteds in my system the last few months, all from one fish, I lost a lot of livestock and I thought I would share some of the lessons I have learnt, hopefully we can post our solutions on here, and we got a thread to go through for research. Also what you do know, like some of the facts and myths of the crypt/ick/white spot curse. I will share what I know, either from personal experience or research into the early hours of the morning, if your opinion differs, please share, hopefully we can all help fight these diseases. I just found making a decision was the hardest, and I waisted time doing it from being undecided.

I did not have such a severe outbreak as most cases, mine took days but it was defiantly brooke, it hit my allards clown first, then yellowtail damsel, then the rest, it took them like 7-10 days to perish (itÂ’s usually a day or two). I wrote to wet web with pics, they said it is crypt, I took their word but did still not believe them, I thought if it was crypt, the tangs and angels would surely be the worst with crypt, and why was my clowns and damsels being affected the worst. My fault was being undecided, and not knowing wether to QT or not, hence while thinking I lost all my clowns basically, it hit them one after the other. Then I thought let me QT all my fish, for everything. I got some true percs from a friend a few days before the qt process, as I wanted them in QT with the other fish. They were in my DT for 2 days and were so severe. I took them and gave them a formalin bath and then into a Paraguard bath with the other fish, and then into cupramine. After this now, they had proper white spot/crypt, I should never of believed wet web, but they fine now and are 100%. They been in paraguard, for a week, and now cupramine for the last 3 weeks, today I lowered the cupramine levels to .25, and I started dosing prazipro.
Pics of my fish before qt, the allard in the pic was in an RO bath, just before it died, as at this stage, flukes were still a possibility after treating the DT for them for the fw dip was to look for flukes.

Got this fish yesterday at the Durban airport, coming from a Cape town LFS, at 8:15pm, got home at 10pm, and started acclimitising till 1am. Put it in the qt tank, with all my other fish. I walked past the QT this morning at 7am, and my emp went mad when it recognised me, I had been away for a few days, it was splashing water at the surface, so of course I fed the emp a few pellets. The queen had been in the tank for about 6 hours and probably ate more pellets than all the other fish combined!!!! It nearly ate nori out my hand lunch time, tommorrow I know it will eat nori out my hand. If I ever had a fish that I would not QT, it would be this fish, but neverless, I will always QT all my fish, it is currently in QT with my other fish. But from now on, I will only buy these MAC approved fish, and this fish has also been carted around to a fish show over the last weekend.
The pics may look like it has w/s, but it is dirt on the glass.
Check how fat this fish is!!!
Proof is in the pudding, check it eating, this pic was taken 21 hours that it's been in the qt.

Hi all, please help here with understanding copper, the cuprazin from waterlife, any tips, tricks, to try and understand it.
1)what are the pros and cons of copper, namely the waterlife cuprazin, is there any side affects to fish, does it smell/put them off their food? I know an overdose is lethal
2)Does it work on parasites also,
3)The cuprazin says dose day's 1,2,3,4,6,8,10, if there is no improvement, you continue dosing on the recomended days, but will that not surely lead to a overdose in copper which I know is serious? Also I will be doing heavy waterchanges, will this not also affect/dilute the strength?
4) How soon can you add other meds, after all copper is removed?
5)Any new fish I buy, can they go into copper (bear in mind that they may not be used to eating
6)Dwarf angels cannot handle copper, but what about anthias?
7)anything else to watch out for?Dangers -
Flagtails

I was getting some water today, and remebered a friend telling me of the flagtails he has in his pooll. I also actually going to add some goldies for my QT/holding tank (will soon be my fly tank), I am sure they would help new fish settle in and encourage them to eat, basically calm and settle them. they also help cause if you feed several times a day they help take up the excess food etc.
What worried me though, if you have to add meds etc, or run hypo for new fish, then goldies maybe wont be strong enough. While the garden boy was getting me about 600l's of water I was diving and checking pools, so anyway I saw the flagtails and caught 5. I put them in the tank, and they were eating withinn 5 minutes, they really eat with vigour, they tough as nails, and they shoal in a very tight ball, tighter than chromis, and they look much nicer than chromis. It's just that they look like guppies, so I will never put them in my DT. But awesome liitle fish, does anyone else have them and what's their experience with them -
time frame for disease's and their spreading

Hi All,
I think one way to help fight disease or help fish in QT is if we could now the time frame of the disease's. I know some lay dorment and the water and fish's health plays the big part, but I think it will be helpful with some disease's like brook and velvet, say a fish has been in QT for 10 days, you can likly rule out brook, because the fish would probably be dead in say 4 days (4 days, is that correct for brook?)
There is some exceptions, eg. a fish has been sitting in an lfs for a few days with the disease, and the sysmptoms would only start showing the day after you got the fish, but general timeframe of disease's spreading?
What time frame have you had with disease's on fish, and when the symptoms started showing. -
