stunning drop off tank (please see my sig for a link to the tank build with dimensions etc)

Made from black silicone and 10/12mm glass

awesome 50mm steel stand

complete plumbing for a CLS, drilled for a CLS (nennie safe, dont see ugly pumps)

I have spent the following on the tank
Glass R4200
Stand R2200
Plumbing R900
Silicone R450

and those are just the major costs totalling R7750

I do not expect the full amount back but i also dont expect to be ripped off

make me an offer via this thread or pm and you could own the only drop off tank in south africa

I have a large amount of dead live rock

ideal for someone starting a large tank

sizes vary from fist size and up

collected over several years

would prefer to have the whole lot go at once as opposed to pricing individual pieces ....

R1000 buys you the lot.....

When wet i would guess the total rock would weigh in at 50 - 70 kg

Guys this is a normal 4 ft but a bit deep, there are a couple scratches but will be perfect for a frag tank or a qt tank or a tank for someone starting off in the hobby

Hi all I have a number of items that must be sold this week

All items are PICKUP and CASH ONLY no EFT

Coral 1 Weird Blue Sponge the grew in my tank .... R120

Coral 2 Small fist sized colony of paly's R70

Coral 3 -7cm pin cushion on large 1-2kg kenya live rock R100

Sump, once the tank have been shut down ...DSB been running for 3.5yrs R250 excludes skimmer and pump. Heater R50

Tank, 120cm x 60cm x 70cm LWH ... 3 scratches, made from 10mm with euro bracing, corner overflow, double base ...... comes without the stand, make me a reasonable offer needs to go befor the end of the month .... Hood without lights thrown in if you want it
Coral 4 - Large sinulara bottom left of tank, under actinics at the moment, swells up to size of soccer ball ..... R500

Estimate of about 20KG mixed (kenya fiji etc) LR R70 a kg .... most of it has something growing on it ... plenty green mushrooms scattered around as well

Top off tank - 1m x 15cm x 40cm R200

Coral 5 Pincushion rock - large about 15cm side with 2 small pin cushions as well R220

Coral 6 - fiji LR with 6-7 pin cushions R250

Coral 7 medium pin cushion and small sinulara - R 250 - note that the pin cushion is attached to 2 rocks all care will be taken when seperating them but slight tear is inevitable .... coral will do fine ... as evidenced by over 20 in my tank at the moment

Coral 8 - Sinulara 20cm + - R 240

Coral 9- Two pincushions and one mushroom R240

Coral 10 - paly and Zoa combination rock R120

Coral 11 & 12 cabbage coral lumo greem - STUNNING under actinics 1.5x size of fist R220 each

As one can see ther are some large aiptasia which can be treated before introducing into your tanks....

Please state the coral you want and when you can collect,

collections preferably on wednesday evening 6.30pm onwards

I am fiddling with a litle experiment and would appreciate your help

I am trying to wire a new thremostat into a fridge ....

i was advised from the supplier that this thermostat would be fine for the model fridge i have

So i wired it but ja worked fine for a few mins then tripped the power time and time again....

here are some pics

this is the new thermostat with the 3 possible wire points

these are the wires in the fridge

i had the brown one on the middle point the green one on the right and the black on the left.... i think

here is a close up.....

so can someone help a geologist with this wiring problem...... non reefer is getting grumpy with me tripping the power !!

Ok So I will be taking a break from marines for a little while, we are doing renovations around the house, and my new job has demanded way more than its fair share of time. Sometimes we need to take a break in order to regain the passion

So here is the deal, I have quite possibly the best Green Bubble tip Anemone in South Africa, I have had it for 03 years and it has survived in captivity for some 05 years to my knowledge, perhaps longer. It has a pair of breeding common perc clowns and this is a package deal they have to go together.

The nennie is HUGE, approximately 50cm in diameter when fully open. At this stage I am asking people to pm me if they are interested. Without sounding nasty, dont even contact me if you have a tank younger than 1 year, a tank smaller than 1.2m, insufficient lighting and dont know how to look after a nennie, this this is a beaut and it is very difficult for me to sell it, so I will be assessing its future home carefully.

If someone wants to keep if for me temporarily until I have another tank I have a number of other fish which I will be selling, that could go as payment for looking after the nennie .. let me know if anyone is interested in this option

I have stayed away from LFS's for the better part of a year since the last move and the slow progress i am making with my new tank, but with the goal now in sight i allowed myself to pop in and have a look around, as it so happens i was at a non sponsor LFS which i have been into on the odd occasion before .... i bought a Naso tang which is doing great anyway..........

I was feeling in an otherwise mood and proceeded to play dumb and ask some real DOFF questions ..... I saw a large what looked like a magnifica nennie in the tank, i asked the assistant what lighting i needed for this to which he replied and i quote "you need blue and white globes and a nemo" i asked what sort of lights and he said anything so long as they blue and white, i asked if the Thick ones like for fresh water would be ok and he said absolutley. I had to have a nemo though as he said they definately do not survive without one. He was billed at the marine expert at the shop !!!!!!!! and he maintains several tanks............. it was in a nutshell the most shocking marine advice i have heard in a long time .....

how then do we as hobbiests and in general very knowlegable marine hobbiests change this ...........

Let me say this simply ..... ignorance and lack of education is killing livestock.... our hobby will become heavily requlated with unreasonable rules UNLESS we take matters into our own hands and prevent this ...... !!!!!!!! we need to do something

MAD skimmer idea

So i was a bit bored the other day and started thinking about a skimmer

how about this as an idea... using a SeioM1500 or M2600 would pump something in the region of 10 000Lph, they have venturi (SP) fittings .... and they run off next to nothing in terms of power......

so here is an idea for a seio skimmer.... it would be fed directly from the overflow OR would require a feeder pump

Who has an opinion on whether this would lork or not?

This is not a bitching thread, this thread is to highlight the good that individuals can do !

So tell us about the initiatives you have undertaken be it marine related or not....

tell us about solar heating or drought resistant plants, or organic farming or town house farming or recycling or wind power or raising funds for animal protection or building animal shelters or owl houses in the city, anything that is making a difference to our environment ?

IF there is a big enough response i will ask Viper to open a completely seperate section of the forum for this but for now lets keep it to one thread ! :thumbup:

I have managed to find a cheap (ish) supply of acrylic.

4mm clear sheet 3050mm x 2050mm @ R260 excl VAT total of 6.2m

I only want a piece 2050 x 1050

this leaves a piece 2050 x 2000 up for grabs at R260 pm2 ex vat

If you are interested please reply on this thread

Usual price is R500 - R600 ex vat

I could use black as well so if you need vlack then lets see what we can do ???
Proposed TS 2 Mod

I am thinking about doing a complete mod on my TS2 and am interested in opinions !

I have been looking at MANY skimmers with regards the drop off, where the total water volume will be approximately 1400L

I have noticed the following
- the application of a water volume to a skimmer seems to be based on gut feel more than a concrete science..... if there is a formula behind it then i can not find it.
- There seeeems to be very little consistency with respect to the volume of the skimmer, the rating of the pump or the volume of the tank it is supposed to skim
- While the amount of air that is drawn in through the pump is critical, very little info is populated about various pumps throughput
There should be some sort of connection, some sort of ratio between these numbers, especially if they are in fact related .......

if i look at my TS2, it is highly comparable to the skimmer sizes of skimmers rated to much higher volumes ! the main difference is two fold, 1 the size of the pump of the skimmers rated to 3000L are much bigger and 2 the bigger skimmers are almost withough exception, re-circulating.

SO here is what i am thinking about and would like your opinions on......

I plan on replumbing the intake on my OTP2000 that feeds my TS2 and making this a recirculating pump. the outlet will remain the same but a second pump will be attached as a feed pump. I will also insert a bubble plate.

Should the skimmer work i would upgrade the otp2000 to an HY2000 or even an HY3000 for energy efficiency !

My guess is that this recirculating bubble plate skimmer would be rated to 1200 - 1500 L depending on what my throughput rate ends up being

I am interested in everyones opinion !

DSB idea

I have been toying with an idea for some time with all the discussion on DSB's on the forum lately!

Here goes ......

I am not concerned about substrate depth or type as this has been covered in many articles, what i am concerned about is the flow, and more specifically the correct type of flow ..... we are trying to create very specific environments for certain types of bacteria....

99.9% of sumps that i have seen, including my own are built with glass dividers on either side of the DSB which rise up in the order of say 10cm (some much more) ABOVE the level of the DSB, i.e. each glass panel is 10cm plus the depth of the DSB. the water level is then traditionally some 3 cm above this glass height....

what if this is wrong?

why i say this is....flow........ how is that water travelling over the DSB? i would argue that most of the water is moving over the DSB in the top 3 cm, and is not getting into contact with the DSB itself..... Many of us have cheato on top of the BSD..... this is not pushed to the one side of the dsb, in most cases it is stagnant, slowly tumbling if you are very lucky .....

The way I understand a DSB is that it needs two distinct area's one oxygen rich and one oxygen poor..... both are equally important and the bacteria from the oxygen rich are provide "food" for the oxygen poor area, there is a reaction or process that must occur.....

Are we providing the correct interface in traditional sumps? the old water flows over the top and i think the top of the DSB is oxygen poor in comparison to the rest of the tank as a result of stagnant area's ...... Are we confusing a fuge with a sand bed with a DSB?

What about this as an alternative ....... ?? chop the extra 10cm off the dividers, have a seperate chamber for the chaeto etc and let a DSB be a DSB

you now bring tank water into contact with the DSB, you have the oxygen rich area and oxygen poor area ......

Thought on this please

Hi All,

For those who are following the Drop off tank, all is still progressing well, however in my initial design i was going to have "TOWER" filter, a series of tanks for the filter, for a number of reasons i scrapped this tower filter .... BUT i have a stand that is sitting doing nothing for now........

i

so.....

here is what i am thinking ..... a filter at the base and a frag tank on shelf 1, another filter at the top and another frag tank on the second shelf ......

and what pray tell do i intend fragging ..... Nennies, specifically GBTA's and RBTA's one species in each system.....

Nennies live for decades in the ocean and i would like to look into the possibility of propogating them here in SA

So any and all comments and crits welcome ..... let me know what you think
