Hi All
Here is my situation. I have set up a 350l tank now just to keep fish. I have in my sump in the first chamber filter floss and black sponge, 2nd chamber a reeftek ts2 protein skimmer, 3rd chamber ceramic rings ( matured thanks to perky pets ), 4th chamber bio balls and the final chamber a return pump.
I have started cycling the tank. I have added 2 dead prawns on Saturday, then added 2 vials of prodibio biodigest Sunday night and then 2 vials of stop ammo last night.
I have been testing the the night before last, last night and tonight and the ammonia and nitrate is not there. Its all reading 0.
My lights are off all the time and the protein skimmer is running all the time.
Can I maybe add one fish in now to test the water? How do I know if the tank is ready? I have added the nitrifying bacteria but now I need a source of ammonia. Should I just feed the tank flakes so long or can I add a fish? Is the prawns that i put in to rot suitable enough?
The tank is about 1 week old now.
Please advise.
Thank you!

Hi David / Dane
I trust you guys are well. Can you please supply me with a price for the lighting units you have on your display tanks.
I am referring to the 2 tube adjustable ones. Do you stock them in a 4 tube as well?
Please let me know.

Hi All
I cannot believe what has happened.
Yesterday before work I had a look at my tank and could not see my green mandarin. So I left it thinking that maybe he is behind the rocks.
So then today I came home again switched on my lights and still no sign of him. So i decided no ways. I drained about 30l and removed all my rocks and coral from my tank.
And what do I find..... Nothing! He is not there, he is not in any of the rocks, he is not in my hang on skimmer, wavemakers, etc.
He is not even on the floor.
Can anyone please advise if they have had troubles with there mandarin's jumping out of there tanks?
He is not any where to be found. Can any one provide me with a proper explanation. Ive got tangs, clowns, chromis, gramma's, cleaner shrimps nothing that could of harmed him!!!
So what actually happened?

Where is the best place to look for a single ballast to support 1 T5 light?
I am based in Cape Town and I cant find any ballasts similar to the T8 ballasts.
Please advise.

Hi All
I though I would post the picture of my new buddy. I have just got rid of my purple tang and replaced him with a wait for it....... black tang.
I had a buddy of mine pop me one down from L.A. after he purchased it for his tank from a supplier in Hawaii.
Here is a picture of him when he was still in my quarantine tank. He is a beaut and I got him for a steal at R 3500.00. :P
He is getting along so nicely with my yellow and regal tangs.

Hi All
I am currently setup a 3 tier stand with 3 tanks and 1 sump. Everything is already designed but I am sitting with a problem regarding the filtration.
I am going to be running Reeftek TS2 skimmer in the sump, refugium, ceramic rings, phosban and carbon.
I am having a bit of a problem deciding how I should filter the tanks. The 2 options I had were the following:
Option 1: Have the return pump pumping the water to the top tank and then the top tank will over flow through bioballs on the left handside into the second tank and the second tank will over flow through bioballs on the right hand side into the first tank where the first tank will over throught bio balls on the left hand side into the sump.
Option 2: I will drill a whole on each 1 of the 3 tanks and have them over flowing individually into the sump and have them pumped back into each tank individually.
So basically will the better to have the water from the top tank flowing through the other tanks or each one individually.
Please you help would be appreciated.

Hi All
I see alot of pet stores are selling fish tank stands but they are massively expensive.
Where is a good place to buy stands in Cape Town at a reasonable price?

Hi All
Something has really sparkled interest for me lately.
I see the LFS's use different sumps than what we do.
LFS use: Protein skimmer, bioballs, ceramic rings, sponges
We use: Protein skimmer, various reactors, DSB and various products such as seachem matrix, activated carbon and purigen.
Why can the LFS's use the inexpensive filtration? Is there a benefit for us to have all the various gadgets on our systems?
I see the LFS's keep clams, fish, coral, inverts, etc, etc in the tanks that we do with little fuss.
Can someone please explain why LFS's can use that filtration and we cant?
Sorry about the question just certain things are really expensive when it comes to reef keeping.

Hi All
Where can I find the piping that is used for the overflow down to the sump?
Can I purchase it by a builders warehouse or is there a specific place that I would need to go?
I am refering to the blue piping.

Hi All
Can someone please tell me where I can buy bio-balls? I would prefer to get them brand new.
If I am unable to I don't mind buying them second hand. I need quite a bit. :tt2:
Thank you!

Hi All
Which is the best way to acclimatize fish, corals, inverts, clams etc.
Whenever I make a purchase at a specific pet store I always take the time out to find out how they recommend i acclimate the new purchase.
Which is the best way to acclimate a new purchase?
I am always told that with coral and clams I can just put them right into the tank.
What method do people choose to do? Drip or Floating?
If i purchase more than 1 fish can I put them in a container and drip them together?
Which is the safest way to ensure that we do not loose anything we purchase to the poor way we acclimate them!

Hi All
I see that there are so many different sump designs with so many different methods of filtration.
What is the best design? How many compartments are required? What kind of filtration should it be?
Can someone please advise? I would like to add a sump to my tank but have no idea which would be the most efficient.
Thanx:yeahdude:

Hi All
I am looking to replace my Via-aqua protein skimmer with a Red Sea Prizm Skimmer.
Does anyone have one of them that they would like to sell or can you PM me from what LFS I can purchase it from?
And also what can I expect to pay for a prizm skimmer?
Thank you:thumbup:

Hi All
I cant seem to stop fiddling with my tank. I was watching my fish swim in the current earlier and I noticed that there is a whole bunch of little air bubbles on a few pieces of my live rock?
I also have air bubbles underneath certain parts of my live rock. Can some one please advise why this would happen and what to do i need to do to rid myself of this problem.
Thank you:)

Hi All
I put a small clam into my tank last week. I believe it is a maxima clam. I put him on the bottom of my tank and he was doing great. Always open showing beautiful colours, not gaping, very alert and responding to the cut out of light.
The clam has been moving itself slowly off the rock on which it came over the last couple of days.
This morning when I had a look at the clam I see it was lying on its side and the byssal muscle was left behind on the rock itself.
Can someone please advise if my clam is gonners or is this the natural way that clams would get around the tank and move to a place where they feel more comfortable?
Thank you!

Hi All
Can someone please tell me what could be wrong with my brain.
Its not opening. I bought it yesterday from a LFS and took it home put it in the tank and it was fine. Now today when I turned the lights on it didnt open at all.
Its still has its red and green colouring but is not opening.
My clams, tooth coral, mushrooms, bubble coral, zoo's, toadstool, star polyps, are all open just not that one.
Is this usual? How long do they take to adapt?
Thanx in advance!
