The clicking sound is driving me and my husband crazy. Any tips/ideas on how to find the little bugger? I don't want to hurt him or remove him. But I'd like to see him!
I'm thinking of sinking a tube with some food in it or something...

Warning about Reef Crystals

I recently lost 3 fish after a routine 25% water change. When I tested my water immediately, my alkalinity had dropped in half (from what it had been right before the water change). Calcium was literally off the charts (higher than what my test kit could measure). There was nothing else note worthy about my water parameters. No nitrites or nitrates. No ammonia. Normal pH, salinity, etc.
I recently did a Google search and talked to some friends and apparently, this isn't all that uncommon for Reef Crystals. Sometimes it's the other way around (with the alkalinity going through the roof).
My buddy at the LFS said that sometimes the different components of the salt mix "settles out" in the bucket if the bucket has been sitting in one place for too long. I don't know if I believe that or not, but either way, if you use Reef Crystals, be sure to test it in a small batch of newly mixed water.

Since only the one eye is swollen and it's not cloudy, I'm diagnosing this as an injury-induced eye infection.
I QTed him below the tank. I think I'm just going to treat him with epson salt at this point. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to try an antibiotic.

I love this part of reef aquarium keeping, when all the critters start coming out of the live rock. It always amazes me when I'll have a piece of rock I think is just about dead, with no signs of life, and then gradually over time, one by one, the little guys start coming out. It's just fantastic! :thumbup: -

Those Tunze Nanostream pumps need to come with a warning about the strength of those magnets. I got one the other day (because they are, in fact, awesome circulation pumps), and for the second time in my life, I underestimated the strength of the magnet, tried to pull them apart, lost my grip, thumb slipped and WHAM! I can't believe how much pain there was. And I've experienced childbirth, and a torsed ovary, so I'm no whimp... but damn that hurt! :( -
Worst Livestock Choice Ever

In the interest of educating the public, I thought it might be fun if we all shared our worst livestock choices and how we learned from them.
I'll go first...
In one of my first marine aquariums (this was about 8 years ago), I put a small horseshoe crab... yes, that's right, a horseshoe crab. It gets better. It was a 10g aquarium with an orange "ball" sea sponge and a false percula clown fish.
The LFS worker told me that it wouldn't outgrow the tank, and that "like a goldfish" they stay small if you keep them in a small aquarium.
Lesson learned: You can't bonsai a horseshoe crab. -

It's sad when you write articles, and answer questions, etc. etc., and yet, don't have a reef aquarium of your own. I had to give all mine up a couple years ago. It was heart breaking for me. :(
Now, finally, I get to start all over again. My husband got me a brand new 75g tank. :thumbup: It's awesome.
I'm so friggin' excited and it doesn't even have water in it yet! I'm determined not to make all the same old stupid mistakes I made last time. This time, I'm going to make all NEW and intelligent mistakes.

300g+ square tank in the making...

ScottV and I are getting started on a 300g+ reef tank we're going to build ourselves! I've never built my own tank before, so it will be mostly ScottV leading the build... but I found the glass at a great price! (though, I did break one of the panels by accident when I dropped it :-( )
Anyway, for now, it's just some panels of 1/2in glass. The dimensions will be 48in x 48in x30in. We're going to send all the plumbing through the wall to a closet on the other side (where we'll have a nice 150g refugium). Lighting will be one 400W MH centered over the tank.
